ground_n and_o as_o much_o upon_o this_o ground_n as_o upon_o any_o for_o when_o christian_n come_v to_o be_v real_o wrought_v upon_o and_o find_v themselves_o discourage_v from_o sin_n and_o so_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o obey_v the_o word_n and_o find_v comfort_n therein_o and_o great_a consolation_n many_o time_n in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o christian_n do_v much_o differ_v upon_o the_o point_n yet_o i_o do_v not_o know_v any_o of_o all_o the_o teacher_n in_o the_o country_n that_o withdraw_v their_o consent_n from_o this_o doctrine_n that_o such_o sanctification_n as_o be_v wrought_v in_o hypocrite_n though_o it_o may_v reach_v to_o great_a improvement_n yet_o it_o be_v no_o evidence_n of_o justification_n at_o all_o and_o it_o have_v be_v handle_v in_o another_o congregation_n and_o i_o think_v not_o without_o weight_n of_o truth_n that_o to_o distinguish_v in_o man_n between_o that_o sanctification_n which_o flow_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o matter_n so_o narrow_a that_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n have_v much_o ado_n to_o discern_v who_o differ_v a_o work_n fit_a for_o angel_n to_o cut_v the_o scantling_n in_o it_o then_o for_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n though_o indeed_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n of_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o now_o guide_v 3_o at_o what_o end_v it_o aim_v and_o common_o under_o one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o three_o be_v put_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o one_o sanctification_n and_o the_o other_o i_o speak_v it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v search_v and_o god_n be_v my_o witness_n not_o to_o unsettle_v the_o well-grounded_n comfort_n of_o any_o soul_n but_o if_o any_o have_v build_v upon_o a_o unsafe_a ground_n or_o have_v build_v hay_n or_o stubble_n better_o it_o be_v to_o know_v it_o at_o first_o whilst_o there_o be_v hope_n in_o israel_n than_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o in_o those_o three_o thing_n former_o mention_v be_v all_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o sanctification_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o they_o go_v so_o close_o together_o that_o you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o discern_v justification_n by_o sanctification_n 1_o for_o the_o root_n of_o it_o the_o soul_n have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n the_o holy_a ghost_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n &_o work_v faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o christian_a sanctification_n ezek._n 36.27_o and_o for_o faith_n it_o be_v that_o which_o purify_v the_o heart_n act_v 15.9_o &_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n heb._n 11.6_o so_o that_o faith_n must_v concur_v unto_o the_o rootednesse_n of_o our_o sanctification_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n do_v attribute_v both_o these_o root_n unto_o both_o sort_n unto_o those_o christian_n that_o shall_v afterward_o fall_v away_o to_o sin_v the_o difference_n true_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o perceive_v when_o man_n differ_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o make_v such_o use_n of_o sanctification_n as_o by_o it_o to_o bear_v witness_n unto_o justification_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a hard_a case_n and_o much_o more_o difficult_a when_o man_n can_v feel_v the_o presence_n of_o spiritual_a gift_n but_o want_v spiritual_a light_n and_o when_o they_o do_v find_v faith_n in_o themselves_o they_o do_v find_v it_o in_o hypocrite_n also_o even_o in_o hypocrite_n also_o even_o faith_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n &_o faith_n to_o wait_v upon_o he_o and_o faith_n to_o apply_v he_o say_v my_o god_n and_o faith_n to_o stay_v upon_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n and_o yet_o these_o man_n do_v vanish_v away_o in_o hypocrisy_n this_o hypocrite_n may_v do_v see_v therefore_o what_o easiness_n of_o error_n may_v befall_v christian_n whether_o this_o or_o that_o grace_n be_v of_o the_o right_a stamp_n or_o no_o it_o will_v behoove_v christian_n to_o be_v wary_a for_o even_o eagle-eyed_a christian_n will_v have_v much_o ado_n so_o to_o discern_v of_o sanctification_n in_o themselves_o before_o they_o see_v their_o justification_n as_o to_o cut_v off_o all_o hypocrite_n from_o have_v the_o like_a in_o they_o for_o the_o sanctify_a frame_n of_o god_n child_n and_o that_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v like_o it_o in_o hypocrite_n both_o of_o they_o spring_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o both_o from_o faith_n but_o now_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v further_a work_n in_o his_o own_o people_n beyond_o what_o he_o work_v upon_o other_o though_o he_o melt_v both_o yet_o hypocrite_n be_v melt_v as_o iron_n which_o will_v return_v again_o to_o his_o former_a hardness_n but_o his_o own_o people_n be_v melt_v into_o flesh_n which_o will_v never_o return_v to_o his_o hardness_n more_o neither_o can_v they_o rest_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o softness_n unto_o which_o they_o have_v attain_v but_o still_o be_v carry_v towards_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o the_o one_o be_v a_o temporary_a faith_n and_o the_o other_o persever_v though_o both_o work_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n yet_o this_o difference_n will_v be_v find_v between_o they_o not_o only_a when_o hypocrite_n come_v to_o be_v blast_v but_o even_o in_o the_o midden_a of_o their_o profession_n as_o for_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v never_o precedent_n of_o its_o own_o power_n but_o his_o strength_n lie_v out_o of_o himself_o in_o christ_n whereas_o hypocrite_n and_o legal_a christian_n be_v confident_a of_o their_o faith_n that_o they_o can_v make_v use_n of_o it_o unto_o such_o and_o such_o end_n they_o think_v they_o need_v no_o more_o but_o look_v up_o to_o christ_n and_o their_o work_n be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o such_o strength_n they_o find_v in_o themselves_o as_o that_o they_o do_v not_o fear_v but_o that_o they_o shall_v carry_v a_o end_n all_o their_o work_n to_o god_n glory_n and_o their_o own_o whereas_o the_o strong_a faith_n even_o of_o the_o thessalonian_o who_o faith_n be_v such_o as_o none_o of_o all_o the_o church_n go_v before_o they_o if_o it_o be_v not_o supply_v and_o strengthen_v they_o know_v &_o the_o apostle_n paul_n know_v that_o it_o will_v warp_v &_o shrink_v this_o may_v we_o see_v by_o compare_v 1_o thes_n 1.3_o difference_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o also_o in_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n in_o hypocrite_n and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n for_o the_o one_o put_v confidence_n in_o himself_o in_o the_o gift_n receive_v and_o the_o other_o in_o jehovah_n this_o be_v the_o first_o difference_n of_o sanctification_n 2._o there_o be_v difference_n also_o in_o the_o rule_n whereby_o they_o be_v guide_v though_o both_o seek_v to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o take_v delight_n in_o that_o insomuch_o as_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o difference_n they_o there_o yet_o a_o great_a of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o always_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o carnal_a condition_n if_o you_o shall_v ask_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o root_n both_o of_o they_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n hypocrite_n may_v have_v a_o taste_n and_o a_o poor_a christian_a will_v fear_v that_o his_o best_a fellowship_n with_o christ_n be_v but_o a_o taste_n and_o that_o manifold_a experience_n make_v good_a wherein_o then_o lie_v the_o difference_n do_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n leave_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n stony_a and_o unmelted_a it_o be_v so_o indeed_o with_o the_o stony_a but_o not_o with_o the_o thorny_a soil_n for_o the_o heart_n of_o some_o hypocrite_n be_v melt_v as_o iron_n stone_n they_o may_v come_v to_o melt_v about_o their_o own_o estate_n through_o fear_n and_o so_o all_o those_o melt_v that_o want_n not_o depth_n of_o earth_n as_o the_o thorny_a soil_n do_v not_o but_o mind_v you_o they_o will_v grow_v hard_o again_o as_o iron_n or_o lead_n will_v do_v after_o it_o be_v melt_v now_o look_v at_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o come_v to_o work_v effectual_o and_o he_o do_v not_o only_o melt_v the_o heart_n but_o take_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o stone_n and_o give_v a_o heart_n of_o flesh_n for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o break_v a_o stone_n it_o will_v be_v a_o stone_n though_o it_o be_v break_v but_o when_o the_o lord_n change_v it_o into_o flesh_n than_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a no_o more_o but_o though_o a_o man_n may_v have_v many_o temptation_n yet_o the_o lord_n will_v keep_v his_o heart_n soft_a for_o ever_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o do_v believe_v touch_v the_o witness_n of_o sanctification_n unto_o justification_n you_o see_v what_o work_v of_o god_n be_v find_v in_o hypocrite_n and_o therefore_o what_o dangerous_a deceit_n we_o be_v subject_a unto_o if_o god_n be_v not_o more_o merciful_a again_o you_o see_v what_o state_n christian_n be_v bring_v unto_o when_o their_o conversion_n and_o faith_n be_v wrought_v in_o they_o and_o how_o it_o be_v not_o ground_v upon_o the_o sight_n of_o their_o
to_o life_n and_o glory_n but_o give_v his_o son_n to_o redeem_v we_o and_o holy_a spirit_n to_o sanctify_v we_o ezek._n 36.27_o what_o need_n be_v there_o then_o of_o sanctification_n for_o if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v dwell_v in_o we_o he_o can_v take_v our_o wit_n and_o understanding_n and_o understand_v all_o our_o meditation_n for_o we_o without_o any_o such_o actual_a concurrence_n of_o we_o as_o may_v be_v requisite_a for_o that_o end_n if_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o to_o be_v my_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n what_o need_v i_o then_o these_o gift_n of_o holiness_n so_o that_o this_o in_o sum_n be_v the_o question_n if_o the_o lord_n will_v give_v unto_o we_o himself_o what_o need_v we_o these_o gift_n to_o work_v any_o thing_n which_o god_n be_v much_o more_o able_a to_o perform_v than_o we_o can_v be_v this_o spring_v natural_o from_o the_o doctrine_n though_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o himself_o and_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o dwell_v in_o we_o yet_o be_v it_o needful_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v endue_v with_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n that_o do_v accompany_v salvation_n you_o will_v say_v what_o need_n be_v there_o then_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o or_o will_v not_o these_o carry_v a_o end_n our_o soul_n unto_o immortality_n true_o we_o have_v need_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v give_v we_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o dwell_v in_o we_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o grace_n though_o they_o indeed_o be_v necessary_a condition_n to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o all_o god_n servant_n heb._n 12.14_o follow_v peace_n with_o holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n as_o if_o he_o make_v it_o not_o only_o of_o absolute_a necessity_n unto_o salvation_n in_o another_o world_n but_o for_o a_o comfortable_a condition_n in_o this_o world_n follow_v peace_n and_o holiness_n as_o if_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o fly_v away_o from_o a_o man_n and_o indeed_o the_o original_a word_n do_v imply_v no_o less_o for_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d do_v signify_v the_o pursuit_n of_o something_o that_o flee_v from_o a_o man_n as_o peace_n will_v many_o time_n fly_v from_o one_o &_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v much_o ado_n to_o attain_v unto_o it_o psal_n 120.6,7_o it_o be_v not_o easy_o attain_v unto_o therefore_o shall_v not_o be_v suffer_v to_o depart_v but_o hold_v fast_o when_o it_o be_v enjoy_v and_o so_o for_o holiness_n the_o apostle_n will_v have_v we_o make_v a_o holy_a kind_n of_o pursuit_n after_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v still_o withdraw_v itself_o from_o we_o which_o come_v through_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n for_o we_o be_v soon_o weary_a of_o holy_a duty_n as_o prayer_n or_o conference_n or_o the_o like_a if_o holiness_n be_v in_o any_o thing_n it_o soon_o grow_v wearisome_a to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n but_o though_o our_o weak_a and_o feeble_a nature_n will_v be_v withdraw_v we_o from_o holiness_n yet_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o to_o follow_v it_o and_o pursue_v it_o and_o so_o shall_v a_o man_n be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o world_n and_o from_o the_o temptation_n and_o bad_a example_n thereof_o do_v not_o say_v what_o shall_v we_o be_v wise_a than_o our_o father_n &_o be_v not_o moderation_n best_o in_o all_o thing_n but_o consider_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v follow_v still_o after_o it_o even_o unto_o perfection_n and_o his_o word_n do_v intimate_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n for_o what_o be_v holiness_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n it_o be_v that_o which_o give_v god_n his_o due_a as_o righteousness_n give_v man_n his_o due_n this_o be_v a_o main_a ground_n why_o we_o be_v so_o slow_a in_o work_n of_o holiness_n for_o be_v they_o of_o another_o nature_n and_o do_v they_o serve_v our_o turn_n more_o as_o we_o think_v we_o shall_v not_o then_o account_v they_o tedious_a if_o a_o man_n be_v to_o sit_v and_o tell_v money_n all_o day_n long_o this_o be_v for_o myself_o say_v a_o man_n and_o for_o my_o profit_n and_o if_o it_o be_v for_o another_o we_o shall_v not_o think_v the_o time_n long_o it_o may_v be_v about_o that_o work_n neither_o but_o mind_n you_o when_o it_o come_v to_o any_o thing_n which_o do_v concern_v the_o lord_n then_o it_o be_v so_o sarre_o above_o a_o man_n reach_n whatsoever_o we_o have_v to_o do_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v soon_o be_v weary_a of_o reach_v forth_o our_o hand_n all_o the_o day_n long_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o be_v constant_o for_o god_n from_o god_n and_o with_o god_n in_o all_o our_o action_n our_o base_a spirit_n be_v soon_o ready_a to_o be_v withdraw_v from_o the_o lord_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n bid_v we_o follow_v after_o peace_n and_o holiness_n without_o which_o &c._n &c._n so_o that_o great_a be_v the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n and_o worthy_a to_o be_v follow_v after_o for_o though_o a_o man_n own_o heart_n and_o the_o world_n and_o man_n and_o satan_n withdraw_v we_o from_o it_o yet_o follow_v after_o it_o for_o without_o it_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o holiness_n which_o some_o man_n have_v attain_v unto_o many_o a_o fair_a day_n ago_o but_o it_o be_v a_o thousand_o to_o one_o whether_o it_o be_v the_o holiness_n that_o do_v accompany_v salvation_n for_o that_o holiness_n be_v not_o easy_o attain_v unto_o but_o the_o other_o will_v easy_o cleave_v close_o unto_o a_o man_n now_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v i_o quest_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o pursue_v after_o holiness_n and_o what_o need_v it_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n dwell_v in_o i_o by_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n if_o it_o do_v withdraw_v from_o we_o as_o it_o do_v from_o adam_n it_o be_v another_o matter_n but_o though_o it_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o we_o yet_o it_o abide_v for_o ever_o what_o need_v then_o of_o gift_n of_o holiness_n answ_n of_o holiness_n be_v requifite_n to_o be_v in_o god_n people_n namely_o that_o they_o may_v become_v meet_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o fit_v unto_o every_o good_a word_n and_o work_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o gift_n of_o righteousness_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a reason_n of_o the_o point_n quest_n if_o then_o there_o be_v such_o gift_n of_o holiness_n what_o need_v the_o holy_a ghost_n dwell_v in_o we_o be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o he_o shall_v shed_v abroad_o these_o thing_n into_o our_o heart_n can_v the_o lord_n carry_v a_o end_n the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n by_o these_o gift_n answ_n there_o be_v need_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o notwithstanding_o 1._o to_o keep_v these_o gift_n in_o we_o 2._o to_o act_n they_o in_o we_o 3._o to_o witness_v unto_o our_o soul_n by_o these_o for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o good_a one_o of_o another_o some_o scripture_n for_o all_o these_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o he_o shall_v keep_v these_o in_o we_o 2_o tim._n 1.14_o there_o be_v a_o worthy_a thing_n commit_v unto_o we_o how_o shall_v we_o keep_v it_o not_o by_o our_o own_o wit_n or_o wisdom_n careful_a watchfullnes_n and_o faithfullnes_n though_o such_o thing_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v want_v but_o the_o charge_n be_v keep_v those_o thing_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o we_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o gift_n to_o be_v fit_a instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o maintain_v that_o which_o god_n give_v we_o though_o adam_n gift_n be_v in_o perfection_n yet_o not_o have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v they_o for_o he_o they_o all_o fly_v from_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o he_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o leave_v he_o naked_a and_o desperate_a therefore_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o lord_n give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o keep_v strong_a possession_n in_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v 2._o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o act_v the_o gift_n give_v to_o we_o and_o enable_v they_o in_o we_o for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o keep_v possession_n do_v derive_v continue_v strength_n into_o our_o faith_n which_o put_v life_n into_o all_o
the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o shall_v ask_v how_o love_n and_o patience_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n do_v work_v the_o holy_a ghost_n stir_v up_o faith_n to_o look_v unto_o christ_n who_o return_v strength_n by_o his_o spirit_n unto_o faith_n &_o so_o faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o by_o meekness_n and_o by_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n thus_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n act_v according_a to_o what_o we_o read_v rom._n 8.14_o come_v to_o any_o holy_a duty_n and_o it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o lead_v you_o along_o and_o act_v in_o you_o so_o ezek._n 36.27_o &_o 2_o pet._n 1_o 2d_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o move_v we_o to_o any_o good_a work_n and_o that_o act_v the_o gift_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o 3._o it_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n also_o that_o witness_v to_o these_o gift_n and_o show_v what_o gift_n he_o have_v give_v we_o for_o such_o be_v the_o blindness_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n to_o see_v that_o general_o christian_n when_o the_o lord_n first_o work_v these_o gift_n in_o they_o not_o one_o of_o a_o thousand_o but_o they_o think_v they_o be_v in_o a_o sad_a and_o fearful_a condition_n and_o so_o they_o be_v very_o uncomfortable_a when_o they_o have_v great_a cause_n of_o rejoice_v but_o now_o lest_o that_o we_o shall_v always_o mistake_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o we_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v free_o give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 2.12_o he_o indeed_o take_v his_o own_o time_n to_o discover_v it_o unto_o we_o to_o some_o soon_o to_o some_o late_a but_o this_o be_v his_o intendment_n that_o he_o may_v honour_v his_o grace_n upon_o we_o by_o all_o the_o rich_a and_o gracious_a gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v we_o he_o do_v also_o reveal_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n which_o he_o help_v we_o to_o do_v â—…om_n 9.1_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o wrought_v in_o he_o this_o brotherly_a love_n bear_v he_o witness_v also_o that_o he_o do_v not_o lie_v and_o that_o he_o have_v whole_a nation_n shall_v be_v destitute_a of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o need_n there_o be_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o to_o keep_v all_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o to_o act_n they_o according_a to_o his_o will_n and_o to_o discover_v to_o we_o what_o gracious_a gift_n the_o lord_n have_v wrought_v in_o we_o and_o what_o duty_n he_o have_v help_v we_o to_o do_v that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o give_v account_n of_o they_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o and_o bear_v witness_n with_o we_o we_o see_v there_o be_v a_o necessity_n both_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v be_v fit_a temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o and_o fit_a instrument_n for_o he_o to_o work_v by_o there_o be_v need_v also_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o for_o the_o cause_n we_o have_v speak_v unto_o and_o i_o may_v add_v this_o to_o comfort_v we_o in_o all_o the_o change_n that_o may_v come_v upon_o we_o it_o be_v a_o strong_a scripture_n which_o we_o read_v in_o john_n 15.26_o when_o the_o comforter_n be_v come_v who_o i_o will_v send_v unto_o you_o from_o the_o father_n even_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n which_o proceed_v from_o the_o father_n he_o shall_v testify_v of_o i_o our_o divine_n have_v no_o place_n of_o more_o clear_a evidence_n to_o prove_v the_o procession_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o father_n and_o the_o same_o spirit_n testify_v to_o we_o both_o what_o mighty_a redemption_n he_o have_v wrought_v for_o we_o and_o what_o grace_n he_o have_v wrought_v in_o we_o this_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v testify_v even_o he_o that_o proceed_v from_o the_o father_n and_o this_o be_v the_o comfort_n of_o god_n people_n thus_o we_o see_v both_o these_o point_n open_v to_o we_o quest_n 3._o how_o may_v we_o then_o employ_v and_o improve_v this_o sanctification_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o and_o which_o he_o keep_v and_o act_v in_o we_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o whereunto_o he_o bear_v witness_n how_o or_o to_o what_o end_n shall_v we_o employ_v it_o see_v the_o lord_n undertake_v to_o do_v these_o thing_n for_o we_o answ_n if_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n by_o his_o spirit_n give_v we_o these_o gift_n it_o be_v our_o part_n then_o first_o to_o see_v that_o we_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o any_o sanctification_n which_o do_v not_o spring_n from_o christ_n convey_v unto_o we_o by_o his_o spirit_n convey_v we_o to_o he_o the_o spirit_n knit_v we_o unto_o christ_n &_o christ_n unto_o we_o he_o work_v faith_n in_o we_o to_o receive_v whatsoever_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o we_o and_o by_o the_o same_o faith_n work_v all_o our_o holiness_n for_o we_o 1_o cor._n 1.30_o christ_n be_v make_v unto_o we_o etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o be_v to_o see_v he_o the_o principal_a author_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n in_o we_o and_o for_o we_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a comfort_n of_o all_o gift_n christ_n give_v in_o they_o and_o the_o glory_n of_o all_o our_o safety_n and_o so_o far_o as_o any_o of_o these_o lie_v in_o our_o sanctification_n we_o ought_v to_o see_v that_o it_o be_v sanctification_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o than_o it_o be_v so_o when_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o look_v unto_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o it_o and_o to_o it_o in_o he_o and_o as_o we_o look_v for_o our_o holiness_n to_o be_v perfect_a in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o we_o look_v for_o continual_a supply_n of_o it_o from_o he_o and_o this_o it_o be_v to_o make_v christ_n our_o sanctification_n when_o as_o whatsoever_o gift_n the_o lord_n give_v we_o we_o go_v not_o forth_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o but_o in_o the_o strength_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o may_v be_v a_o change_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o may_v spring_v from_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o may_v captivate_v our_o conscience_n unto_o the_o law_n that_o may_v restrain_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o constrain_v we_o unto_o duty_n but_o such_o holiness_n spring_v not_o always_o from_o our_o union_n with_o christ_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o conscience_n of_o duty_n without_o sense_n of_o our_o need_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o israelite_n at_o mount_n sinai_n deut._n 5.27,28,29_o go_v thou_o near_o say_v they_o to_o moses_n and_o hear_v all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v say_v and_o speak_v thou_o unto_o we_o all_o that_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n shall_v speak_v unto_o thou_o and_o we_o will_v hear_v it_o and_o do_v it_o they_o have_v well_o say_v all_o that_o they_o have_v speak_v say_v the_o lord_n o_o that_o there_o be_v a_o heart_n in_o they_o that_o they_o will_v fear_v i_o etc._n etc._n this_o i_o say_v therefore_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n to_o be_v attend_v unto_o as_o ever_o you_o will_v make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o your_o holiness_n see_v that_o it_o be_v such_o as_o flow_v from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o heart_n awe_v with_o the_o law_n but_o wait_v upon_o christ_n to_o be_v all_o in_o all_o in_o we_o and_o to_o we_o so_o shall_v we_o neither_o neglect_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o we_o nor_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n but_o shall_v give_v due_a honour_n unto_o all_o of_o they_o together_o 2_o this_o may_v also_o teach_v all_o christian_n not_o to_o trust_v upon_o the_o gift_n of_o their_o holiness_n though_o they_o do_v spring_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o though_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v unchangeable_a though_o they_o spring_v from_o jesus_n christ_n and_o knit_v our_o soul_n in_o union_n with_o he_o yet_o trust_v not_o in_o the_o gift_n themselves_o the_o lord_n lay_v it_o down_o as_o the_o apostasy_n of_o israel_n ezek._n 16.14,15_o trust_v not_o therefore_o in_o any_o of_o these_o but_o let_v all_o our_o confidence_n be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n not_o in_o any_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o his_o spirit_n whatsoever_o for_o a_o little_a further_o open_v of_o it_o 1_o trust_v not_o in_o any_o gift_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o duty_n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o strong_a christian_a that_o be_v able_a to_o put_v forth_o a_o good_a thought_n 2_o cor._n sanctify_v heb._n 10.29_o for_o christ_n be_v but_o a_o conditional_a redeemer_n unto_o they_o they_o have_v only_a gift_n of_o tongue_n and_o utterance_n and_o wisdom_n and_o discern_v of_o spirit_n
