set_v upon_o we_o and_o we_o must_v look_v for_o to_o be_v tempt_v prepare_v ourselves_o to_o this_o spiritual_a battle_n and_o put_v upon_o we_o the_o whole_a complete_a armour_n of_o god_n ephes_n 6._o 11._o but_o most_o man_n will_v say_v this_o doctrine_n be_v not_o true_a for_o they_o never_o feel_v any_o such_o combat_n in_o themselves_o though_o they_o have_v be_v baptize_v many_o year_n i_o answer_v such_o man_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v they_o have_v only_o the_o outward_a baptism_n of_o water_n and_o never_o receive_v the_o inward_a baptism_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o such_o man_n do_v indeed_o wear_v christ_n livery_n but_o do_v service_n to_o the_o devil_n his_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o let_v such_o person_n reform_v themselves_o turn_v from_o their_o wicked_a and_o sinful_a one_o way_n or_o other_o it_o be_v that_o which_o befall_v the_o head_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o all_o that_o be_v his_o member_n reckon_v of_o it_o example_n of_o this_o we_o have_v in_o moses_n 14._o who_o so_o soon_o as_o he_o be_v new_o call_v to_o be_v the_o guide_n and_o deliverer_n of_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n he_o be_v fain_o to_o fly_v when_o he_o have_v kill_v the_o egyptian_a call_n without_o the_o special_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o by_o these_o temptation_n and_o trial_n the_o lord_n stir_v up_o a_o great_a love_n of_o his_o majesty_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n and_o with_o it_o many_o other_o grace_n as_o prayer_n patience_n etc._n etc._n and_o make_v these_o grace_n the_o better_a to_o show_v themselves_o see_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n begin_v his_o prophetical_a office_n of_o teach_v the_o church_n of_o god_n with_o temptation_n 3_o this_o shall_v admonish_v the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o they_o of_o all_o other_o man_n be_v subject_a to_o satan_n temptation_n because_o they_o be_v the_o lord_n standard-bearer_n and_o his_o lieutenant_n against_o who_o satan_n and_o all_o his_o soldier_n bend_v all_o their_o force_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o temptation_n teach_v man_n many_o thing_n which_o they_o can_v never_o learn_v by_o bare_a study_n so_o that_o one_o say_v well_o read_v meditation_n prayer_n and_o temptation_n these_o four_o make_v a_o divine_a the_o second_o point_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v what_o be_v the_o cause_n which_o move_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o go_v into_o the_o wilderness_n which_o be_v the_o lead_n of_o the_o spirit_n jesus_n be_v lead_v aside_o of_o the_o spirit_n luke_n 4._o 1._o or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v he_o be_v carry_v apart_o mark_n 1._o 12._o not_o by_o a_o force_a but_o a_o voluntary_a motion_n this_o be_v not_o a_o local_a transportation_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n as_o that_o of_o eliah_n and_o of_o philip_n from_o the_o eunuch_n but_o by_o and_o send_v his_o spirit_n objection_n christ_n send_v the_o holy_a ghost_n objection_n therefore_o can_v be_v lead_v by_o it_o answer_n ans._n as_o christ_n be_v man_n he_o be_v guide_v by_o god_n in_o all_o our_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n for_o this_o be_v a_o true_a note_n of_o god_n child_n rom._n 8._o 14._o but_o as_o many_o as_o be_v not_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o same_o be_v none_o of_o he_o rom._n 8._o 9_o and_o therefore_o let_v we_o all_o become_v pliable_a to_o the_o motion_n and_o direction_n of_o god_n bless_a spirit_n so_o as_o we_o can_v say_v as_o david_n say_v when_o thou_o say_v seek_v you_o my_o face_n 8._o my_o heart_n answer_v unto_o thou_o o_o lord_n i_o will_v seek_v thy_o face_n again_o 2._o from_o this_o that_o christ_n be_v lead_v unto_o temptation_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n we_o learn_v that_o temptation_n come_v not_o by_o chance_n nor_o yet_o by_o the_o devil_n will_v and_o appointment_n for_o he_o can_v not_o touch_v the_o person_n as_o soldier_n try_v be_v christian_n the_o person_n tempt_v be_v satan_n our_o adversary_n the_o beholder_n be_v man_n and_o angel_n the_o judge_n or_o umpire_n be_v the_o lord_n himself_o so_o that_o the_o issue_n shall_v be_v good_a and_o therefore_o when_o we_o be_v tempt_v we_o must_v not_o think_v it_o strange_a but_o rather_o as_o jam._n 1._o 2._o account_n it_o exceed_a joy_n when_o we_o be_v tempt_v for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n and_o also_o see_v they_o come_v by_o god_n appointment_n it_o shall_v move_v we_o all_o to_o endure_v they_o by_o some_o extraordinary_a motion_n and_o instinct_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o may_v offer_v himself_o unto_o danger_n so_o paul_n go_v bind_v in_o the_o spirit_n to_o jerusalem_n 22._o that_o be_v he_o do_v willing_o follow_v the_o motion_n 〈◊〉_d god_n spirit_n which_o inforce_v he_o to_o go_v to_o jeâ—rusalem_n and_o so_o many_o of_o the_o martyr_n though_o they_o may_v have_v flee_v yet_o be_v move_v 〈◊〉_d the_o inward_a motion_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n diâ—â—stand_v to_o the_o truth_n abide_v the_o danger_n and_o enâ—dured_v the_o fire_n but_o otherwise_o no_o man_n be_v witting_o to_o cast_v himself_o into_o danger_n yet_o if_o the_o lord_n send_v any_o danger_n unto_o a_o man_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o his_o call_n and_o vocation_n walk_v according_a to_o god_n word_n he_o be_v patient_o to_o endure_v it_o and_o may_v not_o seek_v to_o avoid_v the_o same_o here_o may_v be_v demand_v question_n whether_o a_o maâ—_n may_v with_o good_a conscience_n and_o safe_o abide_v in_o such_o place_n where_o it_o be_v certain_o knownâ—_n that_o evil_a spirit_n do_v haunt_v and_o use_v to_o be_v although_o some_o be_v so_o venturous_a and_o bold_a that_o they_o fear_v nothing_o answer_n yet_o it_o be_v no_o wisdom_n neither_o be_v it_o lawful_a for_o man_n to_o frequent_v and_o abide_v in_o those_o place_n but_o rather_o to_o shunnâ—_n they_o see_v the_o lord_n have_v deliver_v they_o up_o into_o the_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o therefore_o such_o man_n as_o frequent_v such_o place_n knowâ—_n to_o be_v possess_v do_v wilful_o tempt_v god_n and_o cast_v themselves_o into_o needless_a danger_n unless_o they_o have_v extraordinary_a warrant_n from_o god_n this_o may_v serve_v to_o reprove_v those_o man_n who_o say_v they_o care_v not_o into_o what_o company_n they_o come_v for_o they_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o no_o company_n can_v hurt_v they_o but_o let_v such_o man_n beware_v for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o they_o shall_v be_v infect_v live_v a_o private_a life_n at_o home_n with_o his_o father_n in_o his_o trade_n all_o this_o while_n the_o devil_n let_v he_o alone_o neither_o have_v he_o these_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o after_o he_o be_v once_o install_v to_o the_o office_n of_o a_o mediator_n present_o the_o devil_n set_v upon_o he_o and_o when_o he_o must_v now_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o man_n in_o teach_v the_o people_n of_o god_n he_o be_v lead_v now_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o furnish_v for_o this_o high_a and_o excellent_a call_n hence_o than_o we_o must_v learn_v that_o when_o we_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n to_o any_o special_a office_n either_o in_o church_n or_o commonweal_n we_o must_v then_o become_v new_a man_n fit_a for_o those_o place_n and_o carry_v ourselves_o suitable_a inquire_v after_o it_o but_o only_o know_v it_o be_v a_o desert_n and_o solitary_a place_n let_v we_o rather_o seek_v the_o reason_n wherefore_o he_o be_v tempt_v in_o the_o wilderness_n wilderness_n perpetual_a and_o if_o a_o man_n for_o speak_v a_o word_n of_o disgrace_n against_o the_o person_n of_o the_o prince_n witting_o and_o willing_o shall_v just_o lose_v his_o life_n then_o he_o that_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n and_o speak_v to_o the_o disgrace_n of_o the_o eternal_a god_n be_v much_o more_o worthy_a to_o die_v a_o thousand_o death_n second_o by_o this_o answer_n of_o christ_n we_o learn_v how_o to_o behave_v ourselves_o when_o any_o shall_v go_v about_o to_o persuade_v we_o to_o depart_v from_o his_o church_n to_o renounce_v true_a religion_n we_o must_v account_v of_o they_o in_o that_o respect_n as_o the_o instrument_n of_o satan_n if_o the_o father_n shall_v seek_v to_o withdraw_v his_o own_o child_n from_o the_o true_a religion_n the_o son_n must_v not_o spare_v the_o no_o more_o with_o he_o and_o whatsoever_o he_o shall_v bring_v against_o we_o when_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o answer_v he_o yet_o let_v we_o hold_v the_o main_a conclusion_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n not_o vouchsafe_v he_o a_o answer_n it_o be_v write_v see_v our_o saviour_n christ_n now_o the_o three_o time_n answer_v the_o devil_n by_o the_o scripture_n say_v it_o be_v write_v we_o learn_v that_o the_o write_a word_n believe_v and_o understand_v be_v the_o most_o sufficient_a weapon_n to_o confute_v &_o to_o confound_v satan_n &_o his_o vile_a temptation_n else_o christ_n will_v not_o write_v we_o learn_v how_o to_o behave_v ourselves_o when_o any_o shall_v seek_v to_o turn_v we_o from_o true_a religion_n to_o embrace_v false_a religion_n though_o we_o can_v answer_v their_o argument_n but_o they_o set_v such_o a_o colour_n on_o they_o by_o their_o wit_n and_o eloquence_n and_o seem_v to_o dazzle_v our_o eye_n that_o we_o can_v not_o see_v their_o deceit_n yet_o we_o must_v stick_v to_o the_o scripture_n and_o cleaâ—â—_n fast_o to_o the_o text_n of_o the_o bible_n and_o if_o we_o find_v but_o one_o sentence_n in_o all_o the_o bible_n to_o persuade_v we_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n we_o must_v hang_v upon_o it_o with_o both_o hand_n and_o let_v not_o oâ—_n hold_v go_v nay_o it_o must_v be_v of_o more_o force_n &_o credit_n with_o we_o than_o a_o with_o they_o and_o be_v able_a to_o disclose_v and_o to_o descry_v satan_n fallation_n and_o subtlety_n and_o we_o shall_v wish_v with_o moses_n 29_o that_o all_o the_o lord_n people_n can_v prevail_v in_o popery_n to_o bring_v man_n to_o this_o that_o all_o religion_n and_o the_o scripture_n may_v hang_v on_o man_n device_n and_o man_n learning_n as_o they_o do_v in_o popery_n ground_n all_o upon_o lombard_n the_o master_n of_o the_o sentence_n and_o bar_v the_o common_a people_n from_o the_o scripture_n lock_v they_o up_o in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n so_o with_o christian_n he_o
