3._o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o the_o more_o we_o do_v in_o this_o kind_n the_o more_o we_o receive_v to_o he_o that_o thus_o improve_v more_o shall_v be_v give_v and_o the_o more_o careless_a or_o idle_a or_o otherwise_o divert_v by_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o present_a world_n etc._n etc._n the_o less_o we_o receive_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n according_a as_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n in_o agreement_n to_o this_o there_o be_v many_o precept_n enjoin_v we_o to_o labour_v to_o seek_v in_o order_n to_o the_o receive_v this_o grace_n and_o many_o promise_n and_o encouragement_n thereunto_o and_o consequent_o our_o not_o do_v of_o it_o not_o thus_o apply_v of_o ourselves_o to_o the_o work_n with_o all_o humble_a supplication_n in_o all_o sincerity_n be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o want_v it_o and_o want_v the_o divine_a grace_n which_o else_o will_v be_v more_o plentiful_a in_o it_o 6._o if_o we_o do_v not_o thus_o employ_v our_o reason_n and_o understanding_n in_o inquire_v into_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n we_o be_v like_a to_o be_v deceive_v and_o some_o other_o spirit_n will_v get_v into_o we_o that_o be_v not_o of_o god_n and_o and_o so_o we_o be_v like_a to_o be_v mislead_v turn_v indeed_o into_o the_o way_n of_o enthusiasm_n and_o phanaticism_n as_o we_o see_v daily_o it_o be_v with_o some_o yea_o so_o clear_a and_o manifest_v it_o be_v that_o what_o we_o receive_v of_o god_n and_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n must_v be_v by_o and_o through_o the_o use_n of_o our_o rational_a faculty_n that_o by_o they_o we_o be_v bid_v to_o try_v the_o spirit_n whether_o they_o be_v of_o god_n or_o of_o man_n or_o of_o a_o worse_a inspiration_n by_o which_o those_o be_v general_o mislead_v that_o think_v to_o find_v the_o truth_n otherwise_o than_o in_o this_o most_o proper_a and_o necessary_a way_n so_o that_o take_v the_o matter_n and_o consider_v it_o how_o we_o will_v it_o be_v manifest_a the_o ordinary_a work_n and_o operation_n of_o god_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n upon_o we_o in_o the_o make_v his_o will_n know_v make_v of_o we_o to_o understand_v and_o to_o be_v impress_v with_o the_o knowledge_n and_o sense_n of_o divine_a thing_n or_o thing_n of_o god_n must_v be_v by_o and_o through_o the_o use_n and_o exercise_v of_o our_o reason_n judgement_n and_o understanding_n 7._o and_o final_o if_o any_o plead_v and_o contend_v that_o according_a to_o these_o proceed_n man_n may_v and_o do_v deceive_v themselves_o we_o daily_o see_v they_o run_v into_o great_a error_n heresy_n mistake_n notwithstanding_o otherwise_o rational_a and_o learned_a and_o plead_v much_o for_o the_o use_n of_o reason_n too_o suppose_v that_o those_o be_v error_n and_o heresy_n that_o you_o think_v be_v so_o for_o you_o may_v be_v mistake_v but_o i_o say_v suppose_v it_o to_o be_v so_o be_v it_o any_o argument_n because_o man_n may_v abuse_v and_o wrong_v employ_v their_o noble_a faculty_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n that_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o use_n of_o they_o in_o any_o case_n sure_o than_o we_o must_v all_o unman_v ourselves_o but_o that_o man_n may_v use_v and_o employ_v all_o the_o power_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o member_n of_o their_o body_n to_o sin_n and_o ungodly_a purpose_n be_v no_o doubt_n as_o neither_o be_v it_o but_o that_o they_o may_v use_v they_o to_o good_a and_o useful_a purpose_n end_n and_o design_n which_o if_o they_o do_v not_o seeing_z they_o may_v do_v it_o they_o shall_v give_v a_o most_o severe_a account_n to_o god_n in_o this_o matter_n above_o all_o other_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o principal_a reason_n and_o account_n of_o the_o just_a and_o severe_a judgement_n and_o condemnation_n of_o god_n against_o man_n that_o will_v be_v condemn_v at_o last_o will_v be_v resolve_v into_o this_o that_o they_o have_v not_o improve_v nor_o make_v a_o right_a and_o honest_a use_n of_o those_o natural_a and_o most_o excellent_a faculty_n which_o they_o have_v as_o man_n viz._n that_o reason_n and_o understanding_n which_o god_n have_v give_v they_o and_o consequent_o on_o the_o account_n of_o those_o talent_n and_o season_n and_o opportunity_n of_o grace_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n for_o the_o do_v good_a to_o themselves_o and_o other_o have_v neglect_v some_o against_o all_o reason_n object_n that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o compare_v heavenly_a thing_n with_o earthly_a and_o divine_a thing_n with_o carnal_a which_o man_n will_v and_o be_v like_a to_o do_v if_o they_o judge_v of_o the_o one_o by_o the_o other_o according_a to_o their_o reason_n and_o humane_a understanding_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o this_o i_o say_v in_o short_a that_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n that_o man_n can_v say_v and_o object_v this_o when_o they_o see_v the_o constant_a way_n and_o reason_n of_o our_o bless_a lord_n himself_o in_o his_o parable_n and_o comparison_n and_o how_o he_o do_v still_o compare_v heavenly_a thing_n to_o earthly_a and_o illustrate_v they_o by_o these_o still_o say_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n or_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v like_a unto_o this_o or_o like_v unto_o that_o according_a to_o the_o way_n reason_n method_n comparison_n and_o procedure_v of_o man_n in_o earthly_a and_o natural_a thing_n and_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n as_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a and_o many_o other_o which_o be_v too_o many_o here_o to_o set_v down_o and_o plain_a than_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v need_n to_o argue_v they_o only_o this_o the_o heavenly_a and_o spiritual_a or_o divine_a thing_n differ_v by_o way_n of_o excellency_n and_o of_o their_o sovereign_a use_n to_o man_n but_o this_o hinder_v not_o but_o that_o in_o their_o general_a nature_n and_o method_n of_o proceed_v they_o hold_v a_o

proportion_n with_o they_o in_o the_o reason_n evidence_n proof_n and_o demonstration_n of_o they_o to_o conclude_v when_o i_o speak_v so_o much_o because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o need_n of_o the_o use_n and_o exercise_v of_o man_n judgement_n and_o understanding_n in_o matter_n of_o god_n and_o of_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o in_o other_o thing_n i_o hope_v none_o will_v think_v that_o i_o suppose_v man_n infallible_a or_o that_o they_o may_v not_o either_o willing_o or_o ignorant_o err_v and_o do_v amiss_o and_o use_v they_o otherwise_o than_o they_o ought_v etc._n etc._n but_o only_o thus_o 1._o that_o a_o honest_a exercise_n and_o use_v of_o they_o be_v the_o way_n wherein_o we_o be_v most_o certain_a to_o find_v and_o may_v expect_v a_o blessing_n from_o god_n in_o our_o enquiry_n and_o study_n and_o good_a success_n in_o the_o matter_n and_o thing_n inquire_v after_o and_o this_o though_o it_o be_v not_o infallible_a be_v the_o near_a to_o infallibility_n and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o the_o great_a certainty_n whereby_o to_o come_v to_o a_o right_a understanding_n and_o be_v sure_o lead_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o of_o our_o everlasting_a concern_v 2._o that_o man_n may_v be_v dishonest_a and_o suffer_v their_o heart_n and_o mind_n to_o be_v bias_v and_o wrong_n influence_v and_o darken_v they_o may_v not_o love_v the_o truth_n for_o truth_n sake_n they_o may_v have_v their_o interest_n and_o their_o lust_n to_o gratify_v and_o so_o they_o may_v err_v and_o do_v ill_a and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v be_v grieve_v and_o keep_v at_o a_o distance_n and_o not_o help_v they_o nor_o join_v with_o they_o but_o if_o they_o be_v of_o honest_a sincere_a mind_n which_o all_o may_v and_o must_v have_v even_o the_o weak_a as_o well_o as_o the_o strong_a they_o will_v find_v they_o may_v be_v sure_o lead_v and_o no_o other_o but_o such_o have_v the_o promise_n for_o it_o and_o so_o far_o they_o be_v keep_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o the_o evil_a spirit_n as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o perversion_n of_o their_o own_o spirit_n and_o from_o the_o subtlety_n and_o deceive_v of_o evil_n and_o interest_v man_n 2._o some_o of_o you_o be_v charge_v with_o phanaticism_n sometime_o in_o your_o prayer_n and_o sermon_n i._n e._n with_o divers_a odd_a and_o too_o course_n blunt_a and_o over-familiar_a and_o unbecoming_a word_n and_o phrase_n comparison_n and_o similitude_n which_o seem_v nauseous_a to_o some_o ridiculous_a to_o other_o and_o however_o passable_a among_o the_o people_n out_o of_o their_o respect_n to_o you_o yet_o offensive_a and_o grate_a to_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o more_o judicious_a and_o give_v occasion_n more_o than_o you_o think_v for_o but_o aught_o to_o consider_v to_o other_o to_o scoff_n deride_v and_o thereby_o countenance_n and_o confirm_v themselves_o in_o what_o they_o be_v willing_a enough_o to_o believe_v viz._n that_o you_o be_v as_o they_o call_v you_o fanatical_a and_o man_n of_o absurd_a speech_n and_o sometime_o of_o behaviour_n in_o your_o religious_a exercise_n and_o though_o this_o may_v as_o well_o be_v charge_v upon_o other_o and_o some_o of_o your_o accuser_n as_o well_o as_o any_o yet_o they_o have_v the_o advantage_n of_o you_o in_o state-favour_n and_o be_v otherwise_o more_o in_o the_o fashion_n than_o you_o be_v they_o can_v make_v that_o use_n of_o it_o against_o you_o which_o you_o can_v against_o they_o neither_o aught_o if_o you_o can_v and_o this_o shall_v make_v you_o the_o more_o careful_a with_o the_o great_a piety_n and_o prudence_n to_o manage_v all_o thing_n of_o a_o religious_a nature_n with_o such_o a_o comeliness_n and_o decorum_n that_o you_o may_v disparage_v neither_o religion_n nor_o yourselves_o and_o though_o such_o kind_n of_o run_n out_o may_v not_o displease_v but_o sometime_o rather_o please_v delight_n some_o of_o the_o more_o raw_a and_o ignorant_a sort_n of_o people_n yet_o to_o the_o judicious_a even_o among_o yourselves_o they_o be_v offensive_a troublesome_a and_o make_v they_o somewhat_o abash_v certain_o man_n may_v speak_v so_o as_o to_o avoid_v all_o affectation_n quaintness_n pedantic_a jingle_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o also_o all_o absurd_a unhandsome_a uncomely_a utterance_n and_o expression_n on_o the_o other_o and_o what_o be_v speak_v on_o such_o occasion_n may_v be_v sober_a serious_a rational_a and_o manly_a but_o of_o this_o i_o shall_v take_v no_o further_o notice_n have_v do_v it_o before_o only_o i_o can_v choose_v but_o wonder_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v and_o see_v so_o much_o of_o this_o nature_n object_v against_o you_o both_o in_o speech_n discourse_n and_o in_o print_a book_n which_o will_v inform_v and_o word_n it_o to_o you_o better_a than_o i_o can_v shall_v not_o now_o be_v more_o careful_a in_o it_o etc._n etc._n 3._o something_o of_o this_o nature_n be_v note_v of_o you_o in_o and_o about_o the_o performance_n of_o religious_a duty_n and_o about_o the_o take_n up_o some_o private_a opinion_n notion_n and_o practice_n in_o religion_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o a_o new_a pretend_a revelation_n or_o new_a impulse_n strong_a and_o extraordinary_a motion_n upon_o your_o spirit_n for_o the_o first_o as_o to_o religious_a duty_n and_o service_n this_o be_v charge_v on_o you_o and_o by_o some_o too_o much_o occasion_n be_v give_v for_o it_o that_o you_o will_v not_o pray_v to_o give_v that_o as_o a_o instance_n for_o the_o whole_a or_o go_v about_o any_o such_o religious_a service_n till_o you_o be_v first_o strong_o and_o inward_o move_v to_o it_o or_o as_o some_o speak_v have_v a_o impulse_n upon_o their_o mind_n or_o be_v move_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o when_o such_o a_o forcible_a touch_n or_o strong_a motion_n be_v upon_o their_o mind_n right_a or_o wrong_n they_o account_v it_o a_o move_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n mere_o because_o they_o be_v strong_o move_v and_o persuade_v and_o if_o such_o a_o motion_n be_v not_o they_o reckon_v and_o do_v account_n they_o be_v not_o oblige_v at_o all_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o duty_n in_o answer_n to_o this_o consider_v first_o i_o grant_v that_o christian_n may_v at_o sometime_o be_v stir_v and_o move_v in_o their_o spirit_n to_o some_o religious_a work_n and_o service_n more_o than_o at_o another_o time_n and_o that_o he_o that_o be_v so_o do_v well_o to_o take_v and_o not_o to_o omit_v such_o a_o opportunity_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o set_v upon_o the_o performance_n of_o prayer_n or_o any_o christian_a service_n till_o he_o be_v so_o stir_v and_o inward_o and_o strong_o move_v this_o be_v a_o doctrine_n and_o persuasion_n than_o which_o nothing_o be_v more_o foolish_a and_o pernicious_a or_o fanatic_a if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o so_o very_o dangerous_a to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o nothing_o more_o contrary_a to_o sound_v reason_n nor_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o this_o be_v so_o plain_a that_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n any_o consider_a man_n shall_v be_v persuade_v to_o it_o or_o lead_v by_o it_o for_o in_o how_o many_o place_n do_v the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v in_o the_o scripture_n call_v upon_o man_n to_o stir_v up_o themselves_o to_o their_o duty_n to_o gird_v up_o the_o loin_n of_o their_o mind_n to_o be_v sober_a to_o consider_v and_o to_o watch_v and_o pray_v etc._n etc._n yea_o to_o provoke_v themselves_o and_o to_o provoke_v one_o another_o unto_o good_a work_n as_o they_o see_v cause_n and_o reason_n for_o it_o how_o often_o be_v we_o call_v upon_o to_o strive_v to_o run_v to_o wrestle_v and_o that_o against_o ourselves_o how_o often_o and_o how_o vehement_o be_v we_o call_v upon_o to_o pray_v to_o speak_v to_o that_o duty_n particular_o as_o a_o instance_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n abundance_n of_o argument_n be_v use_v to_o provoke_v and_o enforce_v man_n to_o be_v constant_a diligent_a in_o it_o etc._n etc._n what_o need_v all_o this_o and_o abundance_n more_o that_o be_v act_v in_o religious_a duty_n except_o extraordinary_o move_v to_o it_o for_o still_o a_o neglect_n there_o be_v from_o what_o cause_n soever_o it_o come_v the_o danger_n and_o ill_a effect_n be_v the_o same_o that_o this_o ill_a and_o insensible_a spirit_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o such_o enthusiastic_a notion_n or_o apprehension_n be_v most_o manifest_a in_o our_o day_n and_o to_o that_o pass_n by_o these_o mean_v some_o come_v that_o they_o neither_o pray_v by_o themselves_o nor_o pray_v or_o worship_n god_n in_o their_o family_n they_o neither_o pray_v with_o they_o nor_o for_o they_o nor_o for_o any_o except_o some_o extraordinary_a motion_n put_v they_o upon_o it_o and_o so_o at_o last_o they_o worship_n not_o god_n at_o all_o neither_o in_o public_a nor_o as_o far_o as_o any_o can_v understand_v in_o private_a and_o in_o fine_a do_v hardly_o profess_v or_o give_v any_o account_n of_o their_o belief_n in_o christ_n jesus_n nor_o whether_o they_o be_v of_o the_o christian_a religion_n or_o of_o any_o religion_n or_o whether_o they_o be_v only_o civil_a pagan_n you_o shall_v seldom_o hear_v they_o mention_v the_o name_n of_o christ_n jesus_n with_o any_o reverence_n or_o expression_n of_o any_o tolerable_a love_n and_o affection_n to_o he_o four_o because_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n before_o they_o come_v to_o be_v so_o bad_a do_v seem_v to_o rest_n much_o upon_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o they_o pretend_v for_o indeed_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n there_o be_v extreme_n on_o both_o side_n for_o as_o these_o will_v do_v nothing_o without_o such_o motion_n and_o impulse_n other_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n rest_n too_o much_o in_o their_o form_n of_o devotion_n or_o in_o their_o natural_a part_n and_o ability_n and_o so_o do_v not_o look_v for_o nor_o serious_o attend_v unto_o nor_o pray_v for_o the_o divine_a illumination_n and_o communication_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n who_o certain_o to_o humble_a sincere_a mind_n wait_v on_o he_o and_o ask_v his_o help_n will_v never_o be_v want_v but_o i_o say_v see_v such_o extreme_n and_o mistake_n there_o be_v let_v we_o see_v what_o the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o and_o what_o we_o may_v reasonable_o expect_v of_o grace_n and_o assistance_n in_o this_o kind_n to_o help_v we_o in_o all_o holy_a christian_a work_n and_o service_n and_o we_o find_v the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v often_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o scripture_n especial_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o a_o helper_n and_o assistant_n to_o we_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n jesus_n as_o e._n g._n for_o the_o understanding_n of_o they_o and_o our_o illumination_n in_o they_o for_o the_o remembrance_n and_o bring_v of_o they_o and_o all_o fit_a thing_n unto_o our_o mind_n for_o the_o help_a of_o we_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o and_o because_o our_o weakness_n ignorance_n and_o indisposedness_n be_v great_a and_o our_o infirmity_n many_o still_o accompany_v we_o in_o all_o religious_a service_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o work_n and_o duty_n of_o prayer_n which_o be_v that_o we_o give_v for_o a_o instance_n for_o all_o the_o rest_n i_o say_v it_o be_v plain_a and_o manifest_a enough_o that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n be_v promise_v to_o we_o and_o do_v concern_v himself_o in_o we_o about_o these_o thing_n but_o we_o be_v not_o where_o teach_v that_o ordinary_o his_o motion_n be_v of_o such_o a_o hot_a and_o strong_a nature_n that_o we_o can_v resist_v they_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a that_o man_n do_v resist_v he_o and_o that_o his_o operation_n may_v be_v resist_v and_o as_o to_o the_o effect_v frustrate_v he_o may_v be_v grieve_v and_o depart_v from_o we_o not_o be_v entertain_v by_o we_o as_o he_o ought_v and_o that_o his_o motion_n be_v ordinary_o soft_a and_o still_o not_o come_v in_o a_o storm_n not_o in_o thunder_n or_o with_o a_o torrent_n but_o such_o that_o by_o man_n careless_a earthly_a lover_n of_o and_o busy_a in_o this_o present_a world_n or_o otherwise_o indispose_v or_o ill-disposed_a may_v not_o be_v feel_v or_o understand_v because_o not_o attend_v unto_o etc._n etc._n five_o that_o his_o motion_n
