thy_o own_o soul_n before_o ever_o thou_o enjoy_v any_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o thy_o own_o soul_n and_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v so_o thou_o must_v try_v all_o over_o again_o by_o a_o spirit_n of_o it_o every_o day_n show_v you_o your_o own_o frame_n never_o be_v quiet_a until_o you_o find_v those_o real_a thing_n and_o then_o have_v a_o little_a grace_n yet_o if_o in_o sincerity_n you_o will_v hypocrite_n be_v discover_v there_o secondlie_o as_o to_o communion_n and_o converse_n with_o saint_n and_o godly_a person_n and_o three_o as_o to_o his_o carriage_n in_o the_o world_n those_o three_o we_o will_v speak_v to_o at_o this_o time_n first_o hypocrisy_n as_o to_o prayer_n which_o be_v a_o duty_n that_o hypocrite_n most_o glory_n in_o of_o any_o that_o be_v the_o duty_n wherein_o saint_n get_v so_o much_o of_o god_n and_o have_v so_o much_o experience_n of_o god_n in_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n that_o be_v use_v as_o the_o common_a way_n to_o get_v whatsoever_o a_o soul_n will_v have_v that_o request_n among_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a that_o if_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v not_o good_a at_o that_o he_o be_v good_a at_o nothing_o if_o he_o be_v not_o very_o curious_a there_o he_o will_v be_v of_o little_a account_n for_o it_o be_v common_a for_o one_o to_o desire_v to_o pray_v one_o for_o another_o and_o with_o one_o another_o abundance_n of_o income_n come_v by_o it_o in_o a_o spiritual_a way_n and_o therefore_o that_o be_v the_o care_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n to_o do_v that_o well_o whatever_o he_o neglect_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o as_o to_o their_o part_n they_o be_v they_o have_v the_o same_o motion_n as_o to_o will_v and_o desire_n but_o not_o the_o same_o principle_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n a_o man_n may_v be_v deceive_v in_o his_o own_o have_v a_o pure_a light_n shine_v from_o heaven_n upon_o his_o soul_n so_o that_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o very_a easy_a thing_n to_o see_v how_o a_o man_n can_v be_v a_o hypocrite_n and_o not_o know_v it_o to_o consider_v what_o voluntary_a motion_n there_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n upon_o a_o man_n spirit_n yet_o not_o a_o save_a work_n for_o as_o the_o spirit_n blow_v upon_o who_o he_o will_v be_v not_o bind_v to_o convert_v you_o so_o he_o may_v present_v the_o outward_a species_n of_o christ_n to_o you_o and_o never_o change_v your_o will_n nor_o understanding_n and_o yet_o a_o man_n may_v think_v he_o know_v perfect_o what_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o whole_a gospel_n in_o his_o soul_n for_o a_o man_n have_v to_o be_v improve_v in_o the_o gospel_n a_o rational_a yet_o be_v unsound_a for_o all_o this_o four_o if_o you_o consider_v the_o variety_n of_o god_n working_n upon_o soul_n in_o conversion_n how_o many_o way_n he_o work_v he_o may_v think_v he_o be_v perfect_o convert_v and_o yet_o a_o unsound_a man_n for_o all_o this_o alas_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v so_o mysterious_a it_o be_v comapr_v to_o a_o new_a birth_n joh._n 3._o who_o know_v how_o a_o goodness_n of_o their_o condition_n and_o not_o know_v the_o badness_n of_o they_o and_o how_o easy_o self-love_n will_v be_v try_v to_o set_v off_o what_o have_v but_o a_o shadow_n of_o religion_n with_o many_o other_o deceit_n than_o you_o will_v easy_o say_v a_o man_n may_v be_v unsound_a and_o never_o know_v it_o in_o his_o own_o spirit_n for_o a_o long_a while_n second_o a_o man_n may_v be_v sincere_a and_o have_v honest_a intention_n in_o all_o his_o duty_n and_o action_n and_o yet_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o i_o shall_v demonstrate_v it_o thus_o to_o you_o first_o there_o be_v in_o some_o man_n such_o a_o moral_a such_o a_o natural_a sincerity_n as_o i_o may_v so_o say_v in_o their_o act_n that_o they_o be_v not_o dispose_v unto_o the_o contradict_a of_o their_o principle_n and_o their_o act_n they_o be_v temper_v within_o themselves_o they_o be_v not_o dispose_v to_o contradict_v their_o act_n so_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o misery_n i_o come_v not_o so_o much_o to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n as_o from_o the_o intention_n of_o my_o heart_n but_o i_o come_v not_o to_o have_v christ_n or_o to_o meet_v with_o christ_n so_o i_o be_o a_o hypocrite_n because_o i_o come_v not_o from_o the_o main_a principle_n therefore_o first_o know_v this_o as_o a_o rule_n that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o clear_a that_o simplicity_n of_o intention_n can_v justify_v any_o act_n of_o man_n that_o be_v bad_a all_o will_v grant_v that_o for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o pilate_n he_o wash_v his_o hand_n yet_o that_o do_v not_o excuse_v he_o and_o even_a working_n of_o principle_n towards_o their_o end_n sincerity_n must_v flow_v from_o the_o even_o act_v of_o faculty_n within_o towards_o their_o end_n i_o do_v not_o act_v sincere_o to_o god_n though_o i_o pray_v never_o so_o much_o in_o duty_n if_o i_o have_v not_o a_o divine_a spiritual_a spring_n of_o love_n to_o god_n a_o heart_n impulse_v move_v to_o god_n from_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n if_o i_o have_v not_o grace_n act_v together_o in_o a_o harmony_n faith_n and_o love_n and_o all_o other_o grace_n pure_o and_o real_o work_v to_o god_n for_o sincerity_n upon_o religion_n he_o will_v easy_o conclude_v that_o all_o the_o promise_n be_v he_o take_v every_o thing_n for_o grant_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o his_o own_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o have_v a_o peculiar_a interest_n to_o all_o the_o promise_n and_o so_o grow_v in_o a_o confident_a secure_a frame_n and_o that_o be_v the_o hypocrite_n i_o tell_v you_o be_v confident_a that_o whiteness_n of_o a_o man_n spirit_n in_o a_o duty_n that_o it_o be_v not_o mix_v with_o any_o bribing_n from_o without_o nor_o secret_a evasion_n from_o within_o and_o that_o shine_v from_o the_o conscience_n be_v so_o bright_a that_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v this_o be_v the_o testimony_n that_o we_o have_v the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n a_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o clear_a in_o his_o own_o spirit_n if_o he_o mean_v to_o avoid_v hypocrisy_n that_o if_o he_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v out_o to_o be_v judge_v before_o man_n and_o angel_n he_o may_v have_v such_o a_o inward_a brightness_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n that_o he_o may_v be_v comfort_v and_o refresh_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o it_o for_o you_o find_v this_o common_o take_v hypocrite_n in_o the_o time_n of_o conviction_n they_o have_v no_o testimony_n of_o god_n at_o all_o now_o take_v a_o sincere_a heart_n though_o he_o be_v under_o conviction_n yet_o there_o be_v such_o a_o light_n that_o he_o judge_v there_o be_v sincerity_n in_o his_o own_o heart_n convince_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n of_o one_o thing_n he_o can_v give_v no_o account_n of_o the_o other_o all_o come_v in_o upon_o he_o and_o challenge_v he_o for_o he_o have_v no_o brightness_n within_o that_o will_v testify_v to_o his_o soul_n at_o a_o dead_a lift_n when_o conscience_n accuse_v he_o have_v nothing_o to_o excuse_v in_o his_o conscience_n from_o the_o clearness_n of_o the_o act_n of_o true_a principle_n in_o he_o i_o beseech_v you_o if_o ever_o you_o mean_v to_o avoid_v hypocrisy_n be_v sincere_a and_o if_o you_o will_v get_v sincerity_n you_o must_v get_v all_o these_o grace_n clearelie_o shine_v and_o work_v in_o your_o own_o spirit_n for_o you_o will_v be_v put_v hard_a to_o it_o to_o get_v sincerity_n while_o your_o principle_n be_v dark_a and_o not_o even_o if_o you_o find_v not_o your_o principle_n and_o end_n meet_v together_o and_o your_o eye_n be_v single_o set_v upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o your_o heart_n set_v for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n you_o will_v not_o have_v that_o inward_a plainness_n in_o your_o own_o heart_n though_o the_o nature_n of_o sincerity_n lie_v much_o as_o to_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o the_o clearness_n of_o a_o man_n principle_n and_o unmixtnesse_n in_o they_o secondlie_o a_o plainness_n and_o ingenuity_n in_o the_o act_n of_o they_o from_o these_o two_o flow_n that_o which_o we_o call_v that_o sincerity_n of_o spirit_n to_o be_v free_a from_o semble_v and_o feign_v of_o thing_n when_o i_o be_o not_o mix_v when_o i_o be_o without_o impurity_n in_o my_o motion_n as_o to_o what_o i_o act_n though_o there_o be_v hypocrisy_n in_o some_o other_o thing_n yet_o there_o be_v not_o in_o those_o main_a thing_n so_o that_o the_o first_o thing_n i_o will_v commend_v unto_o you_o if_o you_o will_v avoid_v hypocrisy_n be_v to_o furnish_v yourselves_o with_o all_o spiritual_a grace_n of_o sincerity_n that_o you_o may_v be_v justify_v before_o the_o sun_n that_o as_o they_o say_v of_o the_o eagle_n they_o try_v their_o young_a one_o by_o the_o sun_n if_o they_o can_v endure_v the_o sight_n of_o the_o sun_n they_o be_v then_o true_a so_o you_o if_o these_o thing_n will_v endure_v the_o sun_n and_o the_o light_n of_o god_n than_o you_o may_v say_v you_o act_v sincere_o secondlie_o if_o you_o will_v avoid_v hypocrisy_n lie_v always_o under_o the_o dread_n of_o a_o omniscient_a eye_n this_o be_v that_o that_o man_n be_v discover_v hypocrite_n by_o they_o know_v not_o what_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n be_v that_o all-seeing_a god_n if_o i_o think_v god_n do_v look_v into_o my_o heart_n and_o do_v see_v i_o it_o be_v impossible_a i_o shall_v then_o go_v on_o in_o a_o way_n of_o sin_n and_o deceit_n to_o deceive_v my_o own_o
