the_o testimony_n of_o the_o apostle_n by_o the_o pledge_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o baptism_n which_o be_v a_o pledge_n of_o our_o inheritance_n by_o a_o earnest_n that_o be_v a_o fore-taste_a of_o the_o sweetness_n of_o god_n in_o devotion_n by_o a_o hostage_n who_o be_v christ_n the_o only_o beget_v son_n of_o god_n to_o this_o double_a joy_n the_o apostle_n exhort_v we_o say_v phil._n 4._o rejoice_v you_o in_o our_o lord_n always_o to_o wit_n for_o the_o divine_a union_n again_o i_o say_v rejoice_v to_o wit_n for_o the_o certitude_n of_o eternal_a beatitude_n he_o have_v ground_n and_o matter_n of_o true_a joy_n who_o be_v by_o inward_a inspiration_n assure_v of_o the_o remission_n of_o all_o his_o sin_n by_o which_o he_o grievous_o offend_v god_n and_o every_o creature_n and_o lose_v all_o the_o grace_n he_o have_v receive_v and_o deserve_v never_o to_o have_v any_o more_o bestow_v on_o he_o this_o assurance_n have_v s._n mary_n magdalen_n to_o who_o our_o lord_n farthing_n of_o his_o sin_n be_v remit_v he_o another_o argument_n and_o matter_n of_o joy_n be_v a_o assurance_n of_o mind_n that_o one_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o heir_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n this_o assurance_n the_o holy_a ghost_n give_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 8._o for_o the_o spirit_n itself_o bear_v witness_v to_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n but_o if_o son_n also_o heir_n heir_n indeed_o of_o god_n but_o coheir_n with_o christ_n this_o assurance_n the_o apostle_n have_v when_o he_o say_v in_o the_o same_o chap._n i_o be_o sure_a that_o neither_o death_n nor_o life_n nor_o any_o creature_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n a_o argument_n of_o false_a joy_n be_v to_o be_v delight_v in_o transitory_a thing_n whether_o they_o be_v temporal_a riches_n or_o carnal_a friendship_n or_o some_o corporal_a commodity_n or_o temporal_a joy_n this_o joy_n be_v the_o trap_n of_o sadness_n for_o when_o these_o thing_n pass_v away_o joy_n pass_v and_o sadness_n follow_v and_o unless_o such_o sadness_n depart_v out_o of_o the_o heart_n true_a joy_n shall_v never_o enter_v into_o it_o because_o they_o can_v be_v together_o no_o more_o than_o fire_n and_o water_n which_o mutual_o expel_v one_o another_o there_o be_v also_o sometime_o a_o natural_a joy_n when_o a_o man_n think_v or_o speak_v or_o hear_v another_o speak_v or_o read_v of_o the_o perfection_n of_o god_n there_o be_v also_o a_o natural_a joy_n in_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n for_o all_o natural_o desire_v beatitude_n this_o joy_n in_o like_a manner_n be_v vain_a and_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o discern_v when_o it_o be_v a_o free_a gift_n of_o grace_n and_o from_o god_n and_o when_o natural_a happy_a be_v he_o who_o can_v say_v with_o esaias_n chap._n 61._o rejoice_v i_o will_v rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n to_o wit_n my_o creator_n and_o my_o soul_n shall_v joy_n in_o my_o god_n to_o wit_n my_o redeemer_n because_o he_o have_v clothe_v i_o with_o the_o garment_n of_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n chap._n xxiv_o of_o sadness_n true_a sadness_n be_v a_o grief_n of_o heart_n for_o all_o the_o injury_n which_o the_o patient_a god_n have_v causeless_o endure_v from_o his_o creature_n from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o which_o he_o shall_v endure_v until_o the_o end_n of_o it_o as_o well_o from_o spiritual_a as_o from_o worldly_a man_n this_o grief_n ought_v to_o draw_v innumerable_a tear_n of_o blood_n from_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o that_o love_n god_n another_o part_n of_o true_a sadness_n be_v that_o a_o man_n be_v oftentimes_o overcome_v in_o temptation_n without_o make_v any_o resistance_n for_o when_o he_o see_v or_o hear_v any_o thing_n in_o bird_n or_o beast_n which_o belong_v to_o impurity_n instant_o the_o mind_n be_v defile_v with_o impure_a thought_n or_o delight_n or_o affection_n and_o when_o the_o soul_n by_o any_o of_o the_o five_o sense_n perceive_v any_o thing_n which_o may_v move_v it_o to_o vainglory_n envy_n anger_n rancour_n detraction_n avarice_n levity_n carnal_a friendship_n or_o any_o sin_n whatsoever_o forthwith_o without_o fight_v it_o fall_v into_o some_o of_o the_o forementioned_a fault_n doubtful_a whether_o ever_o it_o shall_v rise_v again_o out_o of_o such_o a_o sin_n or_o no._n and_o if_o by_o the_o help_n of_o god_n it_o do_v rise_v again_o it_o be_v uncertain_a if_o it_o ever_o recover_v the_o grace_n which_o it_o have_v and_o so_o great_a grace_n as_o it_o have_v before_o for_o man_n can_v fall_v of_o himself_o but_o he_o can_v of_o himself_o rise_v again_o because_o they_o be_v flesh_n a_o spirit_n go_v away_o and_o not_o return_v psal_n 77._o another_o part_n of_o true_a sadness_n be_v that_o manifold_a grace_n flow_v out_o of_o the_o fountain_n of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n come_v to_o nothing_o because_o they_o do_v not_o return_v to_o the_o principal_a from_o whence_o they_o flow_v with_o a_o manifold_a increase_n according_a to_o the_o design_n of_o god_n this_o all_o creature_n can_v never_o sufficient_o bewail_v we_o ought_v to_o be_v induce_v to_o true_a sadness_n by_o the_o most_o holy_a example_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n who_o soul_n be_v sad_a from_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o his_o life_n to_o his_o very_a death_n who_o also_o acknowledge_v the_o sad_a to_o be_v happy_a say_v mat._n 5._o bless_a be_v they_o that_o mourn_v for_o they_o shall_v be_v comfort_v because_o joy_n can_v be_v find_v but_o by_o sadness_n as_o a_o certain_a gloss_n say_v upon_o the_o canonical_a epistle_n of_o st._n james_n the_o profit_n also_o which_o proceed_v from_o sadness_n aught_o to_o induce_v we_o hereunto_o for_o true_a sadness_n be_v more_o profitable_a than_o true_a joy_n according_a to_o that_o eccles_n 7._o it_o be_v better_a to_o go_v to_o the_o house_n of_o mourning_n than_o to_o the_o house_n of_o feast_v for_o oftentimes_o one_o be_v humble_v by_o sadness_n but_o be_v lift_v up_o by_o joy_n and_o which_o be_v more_o lamentable_a sometime_o a_o spiritual_a man_n after_o joy_n and_o devotion_n of_o mind_n become_v more_o free_a that_o day_n and_o less_o vigilant_a over_o his_o action_n than_o he_o will_v have_v be_v if_o he_o shall_v have_v have_v not_o joy_n another_o profit_n of_o sadness_n be_v whereas_o prayer_n and_o other_o good_a work_n anoint_v and_o cherish_v god_n tear_n which_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o sadness_n compel_v or_o prick_v he_o according_a to_o s._n bernard_n a_o argument_n of_o true_a sadness_n be_v when_o the_o mind_n be_v not_o depress_v by_o grief_n but_o elevate_v nor_o will_v it_o be_v free_v from_o sadness_n but_o still_o desire_v more_o but_o sadness_n by_o which_o the_o mind_n be_v depress_v and_o from_o which_o it_o desire_v instant_o to_o be_v free_v be_v not_o good_n such_o be_v the_o sadness_n of_o which_o it_o be_v write_v pro._n 17._o sadness_n of_o heart_n dry_v up_o the_o bone_n to_o wit_n of_o virtue_n and_o s._n james_n chap._n 1._o the_o anger_n of_o man_n which_o proceed_v from_o sadness_n do_v not_o work_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n he_o have_v a_o argument_n of_o true_a sadness_n who_o restrain_v his_o sense_n from_o whatsoever_o delicacy_n he_o do_v not_o see_v nor_o hear_v nor_o taste_n nor_o smell_v nor_o touch_v any_o thing_n by_o which_o his_o grief_n may_v be_v mitigate_v he_o fly_v also_o all_o place_n and_o all_o company_n by_o who_o conversation_n the_o grief_n of_o his_o heart_n may_v be_v diminish_v for_o he_o be_v certain_a the_o most_o secure_a way_n the_o affliction_n or_o death_n of_o friend_n or_o for_o the_o infirmity_n of_o his_o own_o body_n or_o for_o his_o own_o correction_n such_o a_o sadness_n confer_v no_o grace_n but_o tear_n the_o 30._o a_o argument_n of_o false_a compassion_n be_v when_o one_o speak_v word_n of_o compassion_n and_o show_v a_o compassionate_v countenance_n and_o yet_o in_o his_o heart_n rejoice_v at_o the_o affliction_n of_o his_o neighbour_n or_o be_v able_a do_v not_o alleviate_v his_o affliction_n or_o not_o restrain_v those_o who_o afflict_v he_o but_o rather_o provoke_v and_o encourage_v other_o to_o afflict_v he_o by_o sign_n word_n or_o deed_n chap._n xiii_o of_o peace_n true_a peace_n to_o god_n be_v when_o our_o five_o sense_n and_o the_o use_v of_o all_o the_o part_n of_o our_o body_n and_o all_o our_o inward_a and_o outward_a work_n be_v dispose_v according_a to_o the_o guidance_n of_o reason_n and_o when_o all_o our_o thought_n affection_n will_n intention_n and_o all_o our_o exterior_n be_v do_v according_a to_o the_o ordination_n of_o reason_n and_o that_o reason_n be_v whole_o order_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o as_o often_o as_o any_o thing_n be_v do_v without_o the_o consent_n of_o reason_n right_o dispose_v immediate_o the_o peace_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v disturb_v he_o have_v true_a peace_n with_o god_n as_o say_v the_o gloss_n upon_o that_o rom._n 5._o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n let_v we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n who_o do_v not_o by_o a_o contrary_a will_n strive_v against_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n who_o follow_v the_o command_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o bow_v his_o free_a will_n to_o the_o divine_a precept_n for_o true_a peace_n be_v to_o agree_v with_o good_a manner_n and_o to_o contest_v with_o vice_n he_o have_v true_a peace_n with_o his_o neighbour_n who_o use_v his_o utmost_a diligence_n not_o design_o upon_o what_o occasion_n soever_o to_o cause_v desturbance_n to_o any_o one_o for_o he_o who_o design_o disturb_v another_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n beat_v any_o time_n without_o disturbance_n for_o he_o that_o be_v disturb_v either_o revenge_n himself_o if_o he_o be_v able_a or_o if_o he_o be_v not_o able_a dissemble_v it_o however_o he_o who_o design_o have_v cause_v a_o perturbation_n carry_v ever_o with_o he_o a_o sting_n and_o remorse_n of_o conscience_n for_o it_o he_o seek_v true_a peace_n who_o continual_o consider_v himself_o only_o and_o leave_v every_o one_o to_o his_o own_o proper_a judgement_n lay_v aside_o all_o transitory_a and_o temporal_a care_n and_o rest_v only_o in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o god_n for_o there_o only_o true_a peace_n be_v find_v as_o s._n augustin_n testify_v say_v thou_o have_v make_v we_o o_o lord_n for_o thyself_o and_o our_o heart_n be_v unquiet_a until_o it_o rest_v in_o thou_o there_o be_v a_o double_a profit_n of_o true_a peace_n which_o ought_v to_o induce_v we_o to_o the_o love_n of_o it_o to_o wit_n a_o sweetness_n and_o quiet_a of_o mind_n which_o follow_v peace_n which_o sweetness_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o part_n and_o the_o begin_n of_o eternal_a quiet_a and_o sweetness_n and_o also_o this_o true_a peace_n prepare_v a_o eternal_a and_o continual_a habitation_n for_o god_n in_o the_o soul_n who_o for_o his_o exceed_a mildness_n inhabit_v only_a and_o rest_v in_o the_o quiet_a heart_n as_o himself_o testify_v psal_n 4._o in_o peace_n then_o will_v i_o sleep_v and_o rest_n and_o again_o the_o psalmist_n psa_n 75._o his_o place_n be_v make_v in_o peace_n which_o also_o the_o apostle_n testify_v say_v 2_o cor._n 13._o have_v peace_n and_o the_o god_n of_o peace_n and_o love_n shall_v be_v with_o you_o he_o conserves_n true_a peace_n who_o follow_v what_o s._n hierom_n say_v upon_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o ephesian_n if_o we_o mutua_o love_v one_o another_o good_a and_o prosperity_n if_o we_o tolerate_v until_o the_o last_o harvest_n those_o sin_n which_o without_o damage_n of_o the_o good_a corn_n or_o with_o hope_n of_o salvation_n of_o those_o who_o ought_v to_o be_v corect_v can_v be_v eradicate_v if_o also_o we_o determine_v not_o to_o do_v work_n of_o perfection_n which_o ought_v and_o yet_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v do_v lest_o the_o weak_a shall_v be_v scandalize_v he_o have_v a_o argumenr_n of_o true_a peace_n who_o avoid_v all_o place_n person_n and_o action_n whence_o probable_o may_v follow_v any_o disturbance_n he_o also_o have_v a_o most_o certain_a argument_n of_o true_a peace_n who_o always_o and_o every_o where_o observe_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o his_o own_o vow_n as_o the_o psalmist_n testify_v psal_n 118._o much_o peace_n to_o they_o who_o love_v thy_o law_n a_o argument_n of_o most_o true_a peace_n be_v when_o reason_n be_v in_o all_o thing_n subject_a to_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v a_o argument_n of_o false_a peace_n who_o do_v not_o pluck_v up_o all_o the_o root_n of_o disquiet_n which_o be_v continual_o spring_v out_o these_o be_v our_o own_o will_n a_o freedom_n of_o mind_n a_o singularity_n of_o manner_n a_o inordinate_a desire_n of_o please_v other_o of_o which_o we_o have_v treat_v else_o where_o also_o that_o be_v no_o true_a peace_n which_o proceed_v not_o from_o our_o own_o virtue_n but_o from_o the_o favour_n of_o other_o for_o example_n there_o be_v some_o who_o have_v a_o firm_a peace_n as_o long_o as_o they_o feel_v no_o contradiction_n but_o what_o please_v they_o that_o they_o find_v every_o where_n but_o when_o some_o thing_n be_v do_v which_o they_o do_v not_o think_v of_o or_o some_o thing_n happen_v which_o do_v not_o please_v they_o instant_o they_o lose_v their_o peace_n of_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o virtue_n of_o peace_n be_v not_o in_o they_o but_o rather_o in_o other_o without_o they_o and_o therefore_o those_o without_o they_o take_v away_o their_o peace_n when_o they_o please_v but_o they_o who_o desire_v true_a peace_n ought_v not_o to_o advert_v what_o other_o do_v or_o say_v whether_o they_o detract_v or_o flatter_v they_o but_o shall_v always_o think_v on_o such_o thing_n as_o make_v for_o peace_n and_o so_o the_o virtue_n of_o peace_n shall_v true_o and_o last_o remain_v in_o they_o chap._n fourteen_o of_o mercy_n true_a mercy_n consist_v in_o three_o thing_n in_o give_v in_o pardon_v and_o in_o supererogate_a the_o true_o merciful_a as_o long_o as_o he_o have_v any_o thing_n administer_v necessary_n to_o those_o who_o be_v in_o need_n which_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o do_v he_o will_v not_o fulfil_v the_o office_n of_o true_a mercy_n according_a to_o st._n chrysostom_n but_o say_v he_o thou_o have_v give_v once_o this_o be_v not_o mercy_n for_o unless_o thou_o relieve_v the_o needy_a as_o long_o as_o thou_o have_v any_o thing_n thou_o shall_v not_o satisfy_v the_o debt_n of_o mercy_n for_o even_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n have_v lamp_n have_v oil_n also_o but_o not_o enough_o this_o mercy_n job_n have_v when_o he_o say_v job_n 31._o if_o i_o have_v deny_v to_o the_o poor_a what_o they_o desire_v and_o have_v make_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o widow_n to_o expect_v if_o i_o have_v eat_v my_o morsel_n alone_o and_o the_o fatherless_a have_v not_o eat_v of_o it_o because_o mercy_n have_v grow_v up_o with_o i_o from_o my_o youth_n and_o come_v forth_o with_o i_o out_o of_o my_o mother_n womb._n and_o a_o little_a after_o the_o stranger_n remain_v not_o without_o my_o door_n be_v open_a to_o traveller_n but_o he_o who_o give_v his_o worldly_a good_n and_o do_v not_o pardon_v injury_n have_v no_o true_a mercy_n as_o say_v st._n gregory_n therefore_o the_o true_o merciful_a of_o his_o own_o accord_n before_o he_o be_v ask_v pardon_n from_o his_o heart_n all_o injury_n resolve_n never_o to_o revenge_v they_o neither_o by_o himself_o nor_o by_o another_o yea_o the_o true_o merciful_a be_v ready_a to_o give_v pardon_n than_o he_o who_o do_v the_o injury_n be_v to_o ask_v it_o for_o the_o true_o merciful_a be_v more_o grieve_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o he_o who_o injure_v he_o than_o for_o his_o own_o proper_a affliction_n which_o he_o suffer_v from_o he_o for_o so_o david_n from_o his_o heart_n pardon_v shimei_n without_o ask_v when_o he_o curse_v he_o and_o throw_v stone_n at_o he_o and_o he_o prohibit_v other_o from_o kill_v of_o he_o say_v permit_v he_o to_o curse_v according_a to_o the_o command_n of_o the_o lord_n if_o perhaps_o the_o lord_n may_v look_v upon_o my_o affliction_n and_o may_v render_v i_o good_a for_o this_o day_n curse_v 2_o sam._n 16._o so_o joseph_n forgive_v his_o brethren_n before_o they_o ask_v for_o those_o who_o injure_v he_o
