this_o wretched_a and_o unbelieving_a heart_n of_o we_o so_o desirous_a be_v god_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v well_o conceit_v of_o he_o he_o love_v we_o better_o than_o we_o love_v ourselves_o he_o so_o much_o prize_v our_o love_n that_o he_o labour_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o secure_v we_o of_o his_o love_n to_o we_o because_o except_o we_o know_v his_o love_n to_o we_o we_o can_v love_v he_o give_v we_o the_o spirit_n with_o the_o grace_n and_o comfort_n of_o it_o which_o do_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o which_o a_o earnest_n do_v among_o man_n but_o what_o be_v this_o spirit_n a_o earnest_n of_o it_o be_v a_o earnest_a of_o our_o inheritance_n in_o heaven_n of_o our_o bless_a estate_n of_o there_o we_o be_v son_n now_o but_o we_o be_v not_o heir_n invest_v into_o the_o bless_a estate_n we_o have_v title_n to_o god_n leave_v we_o not_o off_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n while_o we_o be_v in_o our_o pilgrimage_n he_o keep_v not_o all_o for_o heaven_n but_o he_o give_v we_o somewhat_o to_o comfort_v we_o in_o our_o absence_n from_o our_o husband_n from_o our_o lord_n and_o king_n christ_n he_o give_v we_o the_o earnest_a of_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v he_o give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n into_o our_o heart_n which_o be_v the_o earnest_a of_o that_o bless_a everlasting_a glorious_a condition_n which_o we_o shall_v have_v in_o heaven_n hereafter_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n in_o what_o regard_n be_v the_o spirit_n call_v a_o earnest_a first_o of_o all_o a_o earnest_n be_v for_o security_n of_o bargain_n and_o contract_n so_o the_o earnest_n heaven_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o we_o shall_v have_v there_o a_o earnest_n though_o it_o be_v little_a in_o quantity_n yet_o it_o
be_v not_o trouble_v that_o be_v we_o may_v believe_v and_o yet_o want_v assurance_n because_o that_o be_v another_o distinct_a act_n that_o follow_v upon_o our_o cast_n of_o ourselves_o upon_o god_n and_o so_o many_o of_o the_o dear_a child_n of_o god_n sometime_o they_o can_v hardly_o say_v that_o they_o have_v any_o assurance_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o can_v say_v if_o they_o do_v not_o belie_v themselves_o and_o bear_v false_a witness_n against_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v cast_v themselves_o upon_o god_n mercy_n they_o have_v perform_v the_o first_o act_n of_o faith_n and_o this_o faith_n be_v not_o fruitless_a altogether_o now_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n that_o may_v hinder_v this_o other_o act_n viz._n that_o act_n hinder_v of_o faith_n whereby_o i_o be_o assure_v of_o my_o state_n in_o grace_n sometime_o god_n together_o with_o my_o believe_v will_v present_v such_o thing_n to_o the_o soul_n as_o whole_o take_v it_o up_o so_o that_o a_o man_n can_v have_v definitive_a thought_n upon_o that_o that_o god_n will_v have_v he_o think_v of_o as_o when_o god_n will_v humble_v a_o man_n for_o his_o boldness_n in_o adventure_v upon_o sin_n he_o take_v not_o away_o the_o spirit_n of_o faith_n but_o god_n to_o humble_v he_o thorough_o he_o set_v before_o he_o his_o anger_n set_v before_o he_o terror_n even_o hellish_a terror_n that_o will_v make_v he_o in_o a_o state_n little_a different_a from_o a_o reprobate_n for_o the_o time_n so_o that_o he_o be_v far_o from_o say_v that_o he_o have_v any_o assurance_n at_o that_o time_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o do_v not_o leave_v off_o he_o cast_v himself_o upon_o god_n mercy_n still_o though_o god_n kill_v he_o yet_o he_o will_v trust_v in_o he_o and_o yet_o he_o feel_v nothing_o but_o terror_n and_o this_o i_o say_v god_n do_v to_o school_v he_o and_o to_o humble_v he_o and_o to_o prepare_v he_o for_o the_o feel_n of_o assurance_n after_o these_o thing_n we_o must_v observe_v that_o we_o give_v not_o a_o false_a evidence_n of_o ourselves_o that_o though_o we_o have_v not_o such_o assurance_n as_o we_o have_v have_v and_o as_o other_o have_v yet_o i_o say_v always_o there_o be_v some_o ground_n in_o we_o where_o upon_o we_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o we_o be_v god_n if_o we_o can_v search_v it_o such_o aught_o to_o labour_v for_o assurance_n and_o such_o will_n in_o time_n come_v to_o assurance_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v far_o from_o allow_v that_o doctrine_n which_o be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v light_v a_o candle_n before_o the_o devil_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v to_o help_v he_o against_o our_o heart_n by_o a_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v as_o if_o our_o naughty_a heart_n be_v not_o ready_a enough_o of_o themselves_o to_o doubt_v it_o be_v the_o profaneness_n of_o the_o world_n they_o will_v not_o use_v the_o mean_n that_o god_n double_v have_v appoint_v to_o this_o end_n nay_o they_o have_v rather_o stagger_v and_o take_v contentment_n &_o assurance_n in_o their_o own_o way_n if_o god_n will_v love_v i_o in_o a_o loose_a course_n so_o it_o be_v but_o to_o give_v diligence_n to_o make_v my_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a i_o have_v rather_o believe_v the_o popish_a doctrine_n that_o i_o ought_v to_o doubt_v and_o only_o to_o be_v of_o a_o good_a hope_n whereas_o we_o ought_v constant_o to_o labour_n to_o be_v assure_v of_o our_o state_n in_o grace_n that_o god_n may_v have_v more_o honour_n and_o that_o we_o may_v have_v more_o comfort_n from_o he_o again_o and_o walk_v more_o cheerful_o through_o the_o trouble_n and_o temptation_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n a_o carnal_a proud_a person_n he_o swell_v against_o this_o doctrine_n because_o he_o feel_v no_o such_o thing_n and_o he_o think_v what_o be_v above_o his_o measure_n be_v hypocrisy_n he_o make_v himself_o the_o measure_n of_o other_o christian_n and_o therefore_o he_o value_v and_o esteem_v other_o by_o his_o dark_a state_n for_o a_o carnal_a man_n heart_n it_o be_v like_o a_o dungeon_n a_o man_n in_o a_o dungeon_n can_v see_v nothing_o because_o he_o have_v no_o light_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o light_n he_o can_v see_v the_o dungeon_n the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a have_v a_o light_n in_o it_o there_o be_v the_o spirit_n in_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o can_v see_v his_o own_o estate_n and_o he_o can_v tell_v what_o be_v in_o he_o upon_o due_a search_n now_o in_o a_o carnal_a man_n all_o be_v dark_a he_o see_v nothing_o because_o his_o heart_n be_v in_o a_o dungeon_n his_o eye_n be_v dark_a his_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o darkness_n all_o be_v alike_o to_o he_o he_o see_v no_o difference_n between_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o he_o hold_v on_o in_o a_o doubt_a hope_n and_o confuse_a disposition_n and_o temper_n of_o soul_n but_o a_o christian_n that_o labour_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v not_o content_a with_o such_o a_o confuse_a state_n and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o abhor_v that_o doctrine_n by_o all_o mean_n and_o to_o justify_v this_o doctrine_n that_o we_o ought_v and_o that_o we_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o salvation_n in_o this_o world_n the_o second_o thing_n which_o i_o observe_v and_o which_o i_o join_v to_o the_o former_a be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o perseverance_n a_o earnest_a you_o know_v i_o tell_v you_o be_v make_v up_o with_o the_o bargain_n but_o it_o be_v never_o take_v away_o so_o that_o the_o point_n be_v this_o that_o god_n child_n as_o they_o may_v be_v assure_v of_o their_o salvation_n so_o they_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o they_o shall_v hold_v out_o to_o the_o end_n end_n i_o think_v many_o of_o you_o think_v these_o two_o point_n to_o be_v so_o clear_a that_o it_o be_v unnecessary_a to_o divide_v they_o for_o if_o we_o be_v assure_v of_o our_o salvation_n there_o must_v needs_o be_v perseverance_n to_o the_o end_n for_o what_o kind_n of_o assurance_n be_v it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n to_o day_n and_o not_o to_o be_v to_o morrow_n but_o if_o you_o ask_v some_o degenerate_v follower_n of_o luther_n that_o leave_v he_o in_o his_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a doctrine_n and_o take_v up_o some_o error_n of_o he_o and_o some_o other_o that_o will_v divide_v these_o hot_a they_o be_v against_o the_o papist_n for_o deny_v the_o doctrine_n of_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o perseverance_n they_o hold_v that_o a_o christian_n may_v fall_v away_o altogether_o these_o thing_n can_v stand_v together_o for_o undoubted_o it_o be_v most_o sure_a and_o just_a and_o right_a that_o these_o truth_n follow_v one_o the_o other_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n and_o perseverance_n and_o therefore_o if_o they_o maintain_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v assure_v of_o salvation_n and_o not_o doubt_v of_o god_n love_n sure_o than_o they_o can_v with_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o the_o same_o ground_n doubt_n that_o god_n that_o have_v begin_v a_o work_n will_v finish_v it_o to_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o that_o the_o one_o follow_v the_o other_o because_o a_o earnest_a as_o it_o assure_v we_o of_o salvation_n so_o it_o assure_v we_o of_o perseverance_n herein_o a_o earnest_n differ_v from_o a_o pawn_n or_o pledge_v a_o pledge_n it_o be_v give_v but_o it_o be_v take_v away_o again_o but_o a_o earnest_a when_o it_o be_v once_o give_v be_v never_o take_v away_o again_o but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o bargain_n so_o it_o be_v fill_v and_o make_v up_o with_o the_o bargain_n so_o grace_n be_v a_o part_n of_o glory_n and_o be_v never_o take_v away_o but_o make_v up_o with_o perfect_a on_o of_o glory_n from_o this_o we_o see_v then_o that_o he_o that_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n be_v undefeasable_a he_o persevere_fw-la to_o the_o end_n because_o he_o have_v the_o earnest_n of_o the_o spirit_n if_o god_n shall_v take_v away_o his_o spirit_n from_o he_o he_o shall_v take_v away_o his_o earnest_n and_o if_o he_o take_v away_o his_o earnest_n he_o take_v away_o that_o for_o which_o he_o give_v it_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n and_o so_o shall_v overthrough_a all_o but_o god_n never_o repent_v of_o his_o earnest_n man_n ofttimes_o repent_v of_o his_o earnest_n and_o wish_v he_o have_v not_o make_v such_o a_o fruitless_a bargain_n but_o god_n never_o do_v but_o where_o he_o give_v the_o first_o fruit_n he_o make_v up_o the_o harvest_n where_o he_o lay_v the_o foundation_n he_o make_v up_o the_o building_n where_o he_o give_v earnest_a he_o make_v up_o the_o bargain_n where_o he_o begin_v a_o good_a work_n he_o finish_v it_o to_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n once_o he_o for_o ever_o his_o we_o can_v be_v so_o sure_a of_o
any_o thing_n as_o we_o may_v be_v of_o god_n love_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v we_o have_v a_o common_a speech_n among_o we_o i_o know_v what_o i_o have_v but_o what_o i_o shall_v have_v i_o know_v not_o it_o be_v a_o ill_a speech_n thou_o know_v not_o what_o thou_o have_v for_o these_o worldly_a thing_n a_o man_n have_v they_o so_o to_o day_n as_o they_o may_v take_v to_o themselves_o wing_n and_o be_v go_v to_o morrow_n for_o they_o be_v but_o vanity_n a_o may_v be_v as_o rich_a as_o job_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o as_o poor_a as_o job_n at_o night_n so_o that_o a_o man_n know_v not_o what_o he_o have_v but_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o grace_n and_o glory_n he_o may_v say_v though_o i_o know_v not_o what_o i_o have_v or_o how_o long_o i_o shall_v have_v it_o i_o know_v what_o i_o shall_v have_v i_o know_v that_o neither_o thing_n present_a nor_o thing_n to_o come_v shall_v be_v able_a to_o separate_v i_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ._n so_o that_o you_o see_v here_o a_o foundation_n of_o the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a doctrine_n degree_n of_o perseverance_n grace_n be_v the_o earnest_a of_o glory_n and_o it_o do_v but_o differ_v in_o degree_n the_o beginning_n of_o glory_n be_v here_o in_o grace_n the_o consummation_n of_o it_o hereafter_o we_o be_v anoint_v king_n here_o we_o shall_v be_v king_n in_o heaven_n we_o be_v son_n here_o in_o this_o world_n we_o shall_v be_v heir_n in_o heaven_n we_o shall_v be_v adopt_v there_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n here_o we_o be_v adopt_v in_o soul_n for_o in_o this_o life_n christ_n first_o come_v be_v for_o the_o soul_n his_o second_o come_v be_v for_o body_n and_o soul_n therefore_o the_o resurrection_n be_v call_v the_o day_n of_o regeneration_n because_o than_o it_o shall_v be_v perfect_v here_o regeneration_n be_v only_o begin_v so_o that_o in_o respect_n that_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v call_v a_o earnest_n we_o may_v know_v and_o be_v assure_v of_o perseverance_n in_o grace_n and_o that_o that_o which_o we_o have_v now_o in_o the_o beginning_n shall_v be_v accomplish_v oh_o how_o shall_v this_o set_v we_o upon_o desire_n to_o have_v the_o bless_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o we_o to_o have_v the_o spirit_n to_o set_v his_o seal_n upon_o we_o to_o be_v christ_n to_o have_v this_o earnest_n and_o to_o get_v more_o and_o more_o earnest_a till_o we_o have_v the_o full_a bargain_n accomplish_v in_o heaven_n three_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o a_o earnest_n be_v part_n of_o the_o whole_a they_o therefore_o that_o have_v not_o the_o earnest_n can_v look_v for_o the_o bargain_n the_o observation_n hence_o be_v that_o those_o that_o look_v to_o be_v happy_a must_v first_o look_v to_o be_v holy_a holy_a this_o point_n i_o mean_v to_o touch_v very_o brief_o i_o be_o loath_a to_o pass_v it_o by_o though_o it_o be_v not_o the_o principal_a thing_n i_o aim_v at_o because_o it_o may_v serve_v for_o a_o kind_n of_o trial_n whether_o a_o man_n have_v any_o right_n to_o heaven_n or_o no._n it_o be_v the_o ordinary_a presumptuous_a error_n of_o common_a christian_n to_o think_v to_o go_v to_o heaven_n out_o of_o unclean_a course_n with_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o but_o miserable_a wretch_n be_v they_o that_o have_v not_o this_o earnest_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o a_o earnest_a of_o heaven_n beforehand_o in_o grace_n and_o peace_n and_o joy_n we_o must_v all_o read_v our_o happiness_n in_o our_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o happiness_n in_o heaven_n and_o holiness_n here_o which_o be_v happiness_n inchoate_n have_v both_o one_o title_n to_o show_v that_o we_o can_v have_v the_o one_o without_o the_o other_o we_o must_v enter_v into_o heaven_n here_o in_o this_o life_n the_o stone_n you_o know_v they_o be_v hew_v before_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n they_o be_v all_o make_v and_o fit_v beforehand_o and_o so_o all_o that_o shall_v be_v stone_n in_o heaven_n they_o must_v be_v hew_v and_o prepare_v and_o fit_v here_o there_o must_v be_v no_o knock_v and_o fit_v of_o they_o there_o so_o than_o you_o see_v these_o three_o thing_n touch_v that_o the_o holy_a spirit_n together_o with_o the_o grace_n and_o comfort_n of_o it_o be_v call_v a_o earnest_n and_o therefore_o that_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o whole_a a_o assurance_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o that_o it_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v away_o now_o for_o the_o four_o that_o a_o earnest_n be_v little_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o indeed_o the_o holy_a apostle_n aim_v at_o this_o partly_o as_o well_o as_o at_o any_o other_o thing_n else_o a_o earnest_n be_v little_a perhaps_o we_o have_v but_o a_o shilling_n to_o secure_v we_o of_o many_o pound_n so_o then_o the_o point_n be_v this_o that_o howsoever_o we_o may_v be_v assure_v of_o our_o estate_n in_o grace_n and_o likewise_o that_o we_o shall_v grace_n hold_v out_o yet_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o assurance_n be_v not_o from_o any_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n but_o though_o it_o be_v little_a in_o quantity_n it_o may_v be_v great_a in_o assurance_n and_o security_n as_o we_o value_v a_o earnest_n not_o for_o the_o worth_n that_o be_v in_o itself_o but_o because_o it_o assure_v we_o of_o a_o great_a bargain_n we_o have_v a_o eye_n more_o to_o the_o consummation_n of_o the_o bargain_n then_o to_o the_o quantity_n of_o the_o earnest_a so_o it_o be_v here_o grace_n be_v but_o a_o earnest_n yet_o notwithstanding_o though_o it_o be_v little_a as_o a_o earnest_n be_v yet_o it_o be_v great_a in_o assurance_n and_o validity_n answerable_a to_o the_o relation_n of_o that_o it_o have_v to_o assure_v we_o there_o be_v nothing_o less_o than_o a_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n but_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n so_o little_a in_o proportion_n in_o a_o manner_n that_o come_v at_o length_n to_o be_v so_o great_a as_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o crocodile_n a_o huge_a creature_n come_v of_o a_o egg_n and_o the_o oak_n it_o rise_v to_o that_o greatness_n from_o a_o acorn_n but_o what_o be_v these_o to_o the_o wondrous_a work_n of_o the_o new_a creature_n to_o be_v the_o heir_n of_o heaven_n rise_v from_o so_o little_a despise_a begining_n from_o a_o little_a light_n in_o the_o understanding_n from_o a_o little_a heat_n in_o the_o affection_n from_o a_o little_a strength_n in_o the_o will_n compare_v for_o the_o littleness_n thereof_o to_o a_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n indeed_o grace_n grow_v a_o man_n know_v not_o how_o as_o christ_n say_v of_o the_o seed_n sow_v in_o the_o earth_n it_o grow_v up_o first_o to_o a_o blade_n and_o then_o to_o a_o stalk_n and_o then_o to_o a_o ear_n and_o then_o to_o be_v corn_n but_o a_o man_n can_v tell_v how_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n when_o the_o spirit_n together_o with_o the_o word_n work_v upon_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o blade_n a_o little_a and_o then_o a_o stalk_n and_o then_o corn._n first_o a_o babe_n in_o christ_n little_a at_o the_o first_o and_o as_o it_o be_v little_a so_o it_o be_v much_o oppose_v as_o we_o see_v the_o sun_n when_o it_o be_v weak_a in_o the_o rise_n in_o the_o morning_n there_o gather_v a_o great_a many_o vapour_n to_o besiege_v the_o sun_n as_o it_o be_v as_o if_o they_o will_v put_v out_o the_o light_n of_o it_o till_o it_o come_v to_o full_a strength_n and_o then_o it_o spend_v they_o all_o and_o
