nothing_o from_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o truth_n this_o i_o be_o sure_a be_v a_o most_o excellent_a soule-satisfying_a truth_n be_v know_v in_o power_n this_o liberty_n from_o all_o other_o law_n beside_o this_o law_n of_o liberty_n this_o law_n of_o life_n well_o may_v the_o apostle_n james_n say_v whosoever_o look_v into_o this_o perfect_a law_n of_o liberty_n and_o continue_v therein_o shall_v be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n jam._n 1._o 25._o three_o as_o this_o law_n deliver_v soul_n out_o of_o bondage_n so_o it_o deliver_v into_o its_o own_o glory_n as_o it_o bring_v light_n now_o the_o mind_n be_v natural_a and_o the_o light_n which_o be_v in_o it_o indeed_o but_o fleshly_a and_o darkness_n it_o self_n now_o in_o this_o false_a light_n the_o soul_n misjudging_a and_o so_o call_v evil_a good_a and_o good_a evil_n it_o take_v a_o false_a liberty_n suitable_a to_o its_o light_n the_o soul_n see_v a_o good_a a_o pleasantness_n a_o sweetness_n as_o it_o imagine_v in_o sin_n and_o the_o world_n in_o the_o service_n of_o satan_n it_o take_v its_o liberty_n to_o act_v in_o it_o a_o false_a liberty_n flow_v from_o a_o false_a light_n for_o the_o act_n of_o all_o man_n be_v suitable_a to_o what_o they_o see_v unless_o give_v up_o to_o a_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n so_o as_o to_o quench_v the_o true_a discovery_n that_o sometime_o god_n make_v forth_o to_o they_o and_o they_o can_v but_o own_o it_o therefore_o all_o you_o carnal_a libertine_n have_v need_v to_o look_v about_o yourselves_o for_o at_o present_v you_o seem_v to_o be_v give_v up_o to_o a_o great_a judgement_n blindness_n of_o mind_n not_o to_o see_v good_a when_o it_o come_v but_o to_o call_v evil_a good_a and_o darkness_n light_n to_o hardness_n of_o heart_n to_o sin_n and_o follow_v the_o from_o a_o misapprehension_n and_o application_n of_o god_n gracious_a love_n in_o give_v christ_n hence_o the_o natural_a creature_n hear_v of_o free_a mercy_n grace_n and_o love_n to_o sinner_n draw_v this_o conclusion_n that_o now_o it_o may_v take_v liberty_n to_o sin_v the_o more_o free_o why_o because_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o christ_n die_v for_o sinner_n and_o thus_o creature_n righteousness_n chap._n v._o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n as_o this_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o law_n of_o light_n and_o liberty_n so_o it_o be_v a_o righteous_a law_n that_o be_v a_o law_n work_v righteousness_n in_o those_o in_o who_o it_o be_v make_v soul_n partaker_n of_o its_o own_o righteousness_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n he_o be_v make_v sin_n for_o we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v the_o righeeousnesse_n of_o god_n in_o he_o 2_o cor._n 5._o 21._o now_o the_o righteousness_n of_o this_o law_n may_v be_v produce_v unto_o these_o two_o head_n 1._o a_o internal_a righteousness_n as_o it_o have_v relation_n to_o god_n 2._o a_o external_a righteousness_n as_o it_o have_v relation_n to_o man_n first_o as_o it_o have_v relation_n to_o god_n and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o righteousness_n in_o the_o spirit_n this_o may_v be_v consider_v likewise_o under_o these_o two_o head_n 1._o as_o it_o be_v more_o external_a 2._o as_o it_o be_v more_o internal_a first_o as_o it_o be_v more_o external_a yes_o spiritual_a and_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n too_o because_o prepare_v by_o the_o father_n for_o sinner_n bring_v home_o and_o apply_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n in_o relation_n to_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o they_o in_o lay_v help_n upon_o one_o that_o be_v mighty_a in_o lay_v iniquity_n upon_o christ_n and_o condemn_v it_o there_o that_o so_o through_o the_o apprehend_n and_o apply_v of_o the_o father_n love_n in_o this_o great_a work_n in_o the_o flesh_n rom_n 8._o 3._o herein_o the_o soul_n behold_v and_o enjoy_v love_n from_o the_o father_n see_v itself_o now_o to_o be_v justify_v and_o that_o by_o grace_n from_o all_o thing_n by_o which_o it_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n this_o be_v a_o more_o external_a righteousness_n because_o wrought_v for_o we_o without_o we_o yet_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n of_o the_o spirit_n because_o prepare_v by_o god_n eye_v and_o apply_v in_o the_o light_n and_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n 2._o that_o which_o i_o call_v a_o more_o spiritual_a righteousness_n it_o be_v a_o righteousness_n wrought_v within_o we_o by_o this_o law_n of_o righteousness_n and_o this_o righteousness_n wrought_v for_o we_o without_o we_o though_o declare_v in_o we_o be_v but_o a_o precedent_n to_o this_o righteousness_n wrought_v within_o that_o so_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v fulfil_v in_o we_o who_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n this_o be_v that_o mystery_n of_o christ_n in_o you_o the_o hope_n of_o glory_n the_o form_n of_o christ_n within_o that_o be_v when_o the_o soul_n have_v experience_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n within_o as_o be_v and_o be_v in_o christ_n work_v the_o soul_n into_o a_o spiritual_a conformity_n to_o christ_n grow_v up_o in_o he_o till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o same_o fullness_n to_o the_o same_o perfection_n but_o both_o these_o i_o have_v in_o a_o measure_n unfold_v in_o another_o treatise_n and_o therefore_o pass_v it_o with_o the_o more_o brevity_n in_o this_o place_n only_o i_o shall_v answer_v one_o objection_n by_o the_o way_n and_o so_o pass_v to_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o this_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n obj._n some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v that_o they_o know_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o this_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n justify_v this_o external_a form_n of_o christ_n they_o know_v christ_n no_o other_o way_n but_o as_o he_o die_v at_o jerusalem_n and_o that_o this_o talk_n of_o christ_n within_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o mystery_n if_o not_o a_o delusion_n for_o christ_n dwell_v in_o his_o people_n no_o otherwise_o but_o by_o faith_n that_o be_v soul_n believe_v only_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o they_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o form_v of_o christ_n in_o they_o till_o the_o day_n of_o resurrection_n of_o their_o body_n from_o the_o grave_n answ_n i_o answer_v first_o that_o its_o true_a this_o form_n of_o christ_n within_o be_v a_o mystery_n indeed_o the_o complete_a of_o it_o will_v be_v the_o top_n and_o height_n of_o all_o mystery_n this_o be_v the_o mystery_n christ_n in_o you_o the_o hope_n of_o glory_n that_o be_v the_o say_a spirit_n and_o power_n conform_v soul_n to_o christ_n in_o death_n resurrection_n and_o life_n and_o this_o be_v the_o more_o mysterious_a man_n of_o sin_n the_o antichrist_n who_o deny_v christ_n to_o be_v come_v in_o the_o flesh_n this_o mystery_n of_o christ_n in_o you_o the_o hope_n of_o glory_n and_o although_o some_o may_v abuse_v this_o truth_n this_o mystery_n be_v delude_v only_o with_o the_o notion_n of_o it_o yet_o let_v other_o take_v heed_n they_o abuse_v it_o not_o through_o ignorance_n 2._o i_o answer_v that_o whereas_o the_o scripture_n say_v christ_n dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n it_o be_v true_a but_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a dwell_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n the_o first_o be_v when_o the_o soul_n see_v and_o believe_v what_o god_n in_o christ_n have_v do_v for_o it_o and_o second_o when_o the_o soul_n see_v and_o believe_v that_o this_o christ_n that_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o dwell_v in_o christ_n dwell_v in_o he_o as_o a_o law_n of_o light_n life_n and_o liberty_n in_o he_o see_v the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n free_v it_o from_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n for_o the_o soul_n teach_v of_o god_n see_v and_o believe_v both_o these_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n christ_n for_o and_o christ_n in_o the_o soul_n this_o we_o shall_v find_v clear_o hold_v forth_o in_o scripture_n not_o set_v up_o the_o they_o receive_v by_o faith_n believe_v and_o know_v this_o to_o be_v a_o truth_n for_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n in_o this_o particular_a be_v but_o one_o thing_n we_o believe_v and_o know_v say_v peter_n that_o thou_o be_v the_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o the_o live_a god_n and_o thus_o saint_n in_o who_o this_o law_n of_o righteousness_n be_v manifest_a can_v in_o a_o measure_n say_v we_o believe_v and_o know_v that_o god_n have_v reveal_v his_o son_n not_o only_o to_o we_o but_o in_o we_o and_o thus_o christ_n dwell_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v no_o one_o truth_n of_o god_n more_o clear_o reveal_v in_o scripture_n more_o glorious_a in_o the_o spirit_n of_o saint_n than_o this_o truth_n of_o christ_n form_v in_o they_o 2._o i_o come_v now_o to_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o this_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o external_a righteousness_n among_o man_n for_o this_o law_n in_o the_o spirit_n teach_v man_n to_o live_v sober_o righteous_o and_o godly_a in_o the_o world_n god_n be_v a_o righteous_a god_n and_o this_o righteous_a law_n conform_v
soul_n unto_o this_o righteous_a god_n and_o where_o there_o be_v a_o internal_a there_o will_v be_v likewise_o a_o external_a righteousness_n and_o this_o righteousness_n in_o conversation_n may_v be_v consider_v under_o these_o two_o head_n 1._o in_o the_o abstain_v from_o work_n of_o unrighteousness_n among_o man_n and_o they_o be_v such_o as_o these_o 1_o cor._n 6._o 8._o oppression_n and_o do_v unto_o they_o for_o this_o be_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n it_o put_v the_o man_n in_o who_o it_o be_v in_o all_o his_o deal_n among_o man_n in_o the_o other_o balance_n and_o this_o be_v his_o saint_n and_o through_o they_o to_o the_o world_n that_o the_o righteous_a god_n appear_v with_o so_o much_o splendour_n glory_n and_o righteousness_n in_o his_o people_n and_o through_o they_o to_o the_o world_n that_o the_o world_n shall_v be_v drive_v to_o fall_v down_o and_o acknowledge_v god_n be_v in_o they_o of_o a_o truth_n he_o will_v take_v out_o of_o they_o that_o perverse_a and_o peevish_a spirit_n and_o fill_v they_o with_o the_o spirit_n of_o love_n he_o will_v take_v out_o of_o they_o that_o oppress_a spirit_n of_o unrighteousness_n and_o fill_v they_o with_o the_o spirit_n of_o righteousness_n justice_n and_o equity_n and_o this_o glorious_a appearance_n of_o righteousness_n in_o they_o will_v by_o they_o and_o through_o they_o bring_v to_o nought_o the_o any_o power_n by_o which_o they_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n and_o yet_o expect_v a_o justify_n a_o righteousness_n a_o salvation_n in_o the_o end_n from_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o false_a law_n of_o unrighteousness_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o most_o not_o believe_v that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n 3._o other_o come_v high_a than_o this_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o join_v high_a degree_n of_o righteousness_n when_o perhaps_o there_o be_v no_o more_o in_o it_o then_o what_o paul_n account_v loss_n yea_o dung_n and_o dross_n for_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n jesus_n his_o lord_n and_o be_v content_a to_o suffer_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o such_o thing_n as_o ground_n of_o righteousness_n that_o he_o may_v win_v christ_n and_o be_v find_v in_o he_o good_a it_o be_v and_o much_o mercy_n to_o such_o if_o they_o can_v with_o paul_n suffer_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o such_o righteousness_n in_o a_o way_n of_o grace_n for_o it_o must_v be_v lose_v first_o or_o last_o if_o not_o till_o last_o than_o they_o must_v be_v bid_v depart_v from_o all_o their_o work_n as_o work_n and_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n into_o utter_a darkness_n they_o be_v full_a of_o dead_a man_n bone_n second_o or_o else_o when_o man_n take_v liberty_n to_o appear_v outward_a to_o man_n as_o they_o listen_v full_o of_o all_o unrighteousness_n and_o yet_o think_v to_o be_v innocent_a righteous_a and_o clear_a before_o god_n justify_v themselves_o that_o they_o have_v good_a heart_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v they_o the_o lord_n reprove_v by_o the_o prophet_n will_v you_o steal_v murder_n commit_v adultery_n and_o swear_v false_o and_o yet_o come_v and_o stand_v before_o god_n in_o his_o house_n think_v to_o be_v deliver_v say_v they_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o they_o walk_v after_o the_o stubborness_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n etc._n etc._n three_o other_o not_o only_o make_v gain_n to_o be_v their_o godliness_n but_o gain_v to_o be_v their_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n to_o other_o and_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v ofttimes_o that_o they_o have_v a_o law_n of_o liberty_n within_o they_o to_o lie_v and_o cousin_n for_o advantage_n not_o know_v that_o righteous_a rule_n to_o do_v as_o they_o will_v be_v do_v unto_o and_o this_o gain_n self-advantage_n be_v the_o great_a rule_n by_o which_o most_o in_o the_o whosoever_o eat_v thereof_o be_v dead_a if_o you_o walk_v after_o the_o flesh_n you_o be_v dead_a but_o if_o by_o the_o spirit_n you_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o flesh_n you_o be_v alive_a therefore_o take_v this_o in_o a_o word_n for_o all_o that_o it_o be_v altogether_o unpossible_a for_o a_o man_n that_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n after_o the_o flesh_n argue_v a_o barren_a fruitless_a unsanctified_a soul_n neither_o second_o do_v they_o pretend_v to_o be_v high_a in_o knowledge_n but_o will_v not_o declare_v any_o thing_n except_o flesh_n talk_v
