by_o prayer_n by_o apply_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o word_n to_o their_o own_o soul_n by_o keep_v good_a company_n and_o the_o like_a this_o be_v it_o that_o make_v a_o number_n to_o fall_v into_o popery_n into_o brownism_n into_o some_o such_o dangerous_a sect_n or_o other_o that_o when_o they_o give_v themselves_o to_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v cross_a and_o contrary_a to_o their_o corrupt_a and_o finfull_a nature_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v full_a of_o contradiction_n and_o gainsay_n and_o at_o length_n fall_v to_o read_v of_o the_o book_n of_o papist_n or_o brownist_n or_o the_o like_a and_o then_o they_o be_v carry_v unto_o their_o opinion_n with_o such_o eagerness_n and_o violence_n as_o a_o ship_n on_o the_o sea_n that_o go_v with_o wind_n and_o sale_n now_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n hereof_o because_o the_o flesh_n be_v never_o strong_o bend_v until_o it_o meet_v with_o a_o ill_a object_n but_o than_o it_o pass_v on_o amain_o without_o any_o stop_n or_o let_v therefore_o let_v we_o be_v careful_a that_o we_o do_v not_o rush_v upon_o any_o such_o inducement_n unto_o idolatry_n or_o schism_n or_o any_o manner_n of_o impiety_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v entrap_v and_o ensnare_v oh_o but_o this_o be_v too_o much_o niceness_n and_o scrupulositie_n object_n will_n some_o say_v i_o hope_v we_o be_v not_o so_o weak_a nor_o so_o simple_a but_o we_o can_v choose_v the_o best_a and_o leave_v the_o worst_a be_v present_a at_o any_o popish_a worship_n and_o yet_o keep_v our_o heart_n to_o god_n converse_v with_o any_o company_n and_o yet_o continue_v honest_a man_n still_o have_v you_o so_o good_a a_o persuasion_n of_o your_o flesh_n answ_n certain_o you_o do_v thereby_o give_v i_o just_a occasion_n to_o have_v a_o ill_a persuasion_n of_o you_o and_o to_o suspect_v that_o in_o truth_n you_o do_v not_o much_o care_n of_o what_o religion_n or_o of_o what_o conversation_n you_o be_v other_o have_v be_v as_o well_o conceit_v of_o themselves_o as_o you_o and_o thereupon_o have_v be_v bold_a without_o any_o calling_n or_o warrant_v to_o travel_v into_o strange_a country_n and_o be_v there_o to_o see_v image_n and_o to_o hear_v mass_n and_o to_o use_v familiarity_n with_o man_n of_o all_o sort_n but_o what_o have_v be_v the_o event_n thereof_o they_o have_v return_v home_o either_o of_o no_o religion_n or_o of_o a_o false_a religion_n this_o lamentable_a experience_n do_v show_v to_o be_v most_o true_a in_o many_o young_a gentleman_n of_o the_o great_a house_n in_o this_o our_o land_n who_o atheistical_a and_o profane_a carriage_n shall_v be_v a_o warning_n unto_o other_o not_o to_o presume_v upon_o their_o own_o strength_n nor_o to_o tempt_v the_o lord_n by_o cast_v themselves_o upon_o the_o occasion_n of_o evil_a three_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o a_o caveat_n unto_o we_o that_o when_o we_o find_v ourselves_o very_o eager_a and_o forward_a unto_o any_o thing_n we_o make_v a_o stay_n and_o a_o pause_n examine_v whether_o the_o thing_n be_v lawful_a &_o good_a yea_o or_o no_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o yet_o let_v we_o search_v whether_o our_o flesh_n be_v not_o set_v a_o work_n in_o that_o spiritual_a action_n which_o we_o be_v about_o whether_o there_o be_v not_o in_o it_o some_o mixture_n of_o corruption_n and_o some_o caruall_a respect_n or_o other_o that_o make_v we_o so_o nimble_a and_o ready_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o it_o let_v we_o i_o say_v look_v well_o unto_o our_o heart_n in_o this_o behalf_n for_o all_o be_v not_o fire_n from_o the_o altar_n that_o seem_v to_o be_v such_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n for_o we_o to_o be_v true_o zealous_a of_o good_a work_n and_o much_o of_o our_o heat_n proceed_v rather_o from_o our_o own_o flesh_n then_o from_o god_n spirit_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o perceive_v our_o violence_n and_o eagerness_n to_o arise_v rather_o from_o some_o inordinate_a lust_n then_o from_o any_o good_a and_o holy_a affection_n let_v we_o curb_v and_o restrain_v the_o same_o and_o beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o moderate_v our_o desire_n that_o we_o may_v do_v all_o our_o work_n in_o meckenesse_n and_o modesty_n and_o with_o that_o good_a temper_n which_o beseem_v christian_n four_o since_o there_o be_v in_o every_o man_n nature_n such_o proneness_n unto_o sin_n and_o iniquity_n this_o shall_v be_v a_o singular_a comfort_n unto_o god_n child_n when_o they_o find_v many_o motion_n unto_o evil_n and_o much_o dulness_n and_o backwardness_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a they_o need_v not_o be_v dismay_v hereat_o if_o so_o be_v they_o see_v their_o corruption_n and_o be_v grieve_v for_o it_o 7._o rom._n 7._o and_o strive_v against_o it_o but_o why_o shall_v heretic_n be_v able_a to_o cleave_v more_o earnest_o object_n and_o firm_o to_o superstition_n and_o idolatry_n than_o we_o can_v to_o true_a religion_n and_o piety_n there_o be_v good_a reason_n for_o that_o answ_n because_o they_o have_v all_o help_n that_o satan_n the_o flesh_n or_o the_o world_n can_v afford_v they_o and_o we_o have_v all_o the_o hindrance_n that_o may_v be_v from_o they_o all_o for_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n that_o while_o we_o have_v a_o natural_a life_n we_o shall_v have_v also_o natural_a corruption_n and_o albeit_o the_o flesh_n be_v in_o part_n crucify_v yet_o will_v it_o still_o rebel_n against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o world_n will_v take_v part_n with_o it_o but_o what_o then_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o god_n servant_n and_o the_o servant_n of_o the_o devil_n object_n see_v there_o be_v in_o they_o both_o a_o unwillingnes_n unto_o that_o which_o the_o lord_n command_v and_o a_o pronenes_n unto_o that_o which_o he_o forbid_v herein_o stand_v the_o difference_n answ_n that_o the_o godly_a take_v notice_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n bewail_v they_o and_o labour_n to_o suppress_v they_o not_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n of_o their_o resist_v the_o sinful_a motion_n of_o the_o flesh_n so_o that_o as_o they_o can_v do_v the_o good_a which_o they_o will_v because_o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v against_o the_o regenerate_a part_n in_o they_o so_o neither_o can_v they_o do_v the_o evil_a that_o sometime_o they_o will_v because_o the_o spirit_n struggle_v and_o fight_v against_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n now_o concern_v wicked_a man_n they_o be_v altogether_o fleshly_a and_o therefore_o when_o they_o have_v vile_a motion_n from_o nature_n or_o bad_a suggestion_n from_o satan_n they_o like_v of_o they_o and_o nourish_v and_o cherish_v they_o and_o if_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v proceed_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o they_o herein_o then_o may_v god_n child_n rejoice_v that_o they_o be_v far_o unlike_o the_o limb_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o that_o they_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o flesh_n by_o the_o spirit_n 8.13_o rom._n 8.13_o and_o therefore_o shall_v live_v son_n luke_n 7.11_o such_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v shall_v be_v the_o sorrow_n of_o all_o true_a penitent_a person_n when_o they_o apprehend_v the_o multitude_n and_o grievousnesse_n of_o their_o tend_v chief_o to_o he_o even_o to_o show_v what_o good_a the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n bring_v unto_o ourselves_o now_o further_o there_o be_v a_o six_o reason_n for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o this_o they_o 2._o act_n 2._o which_o fill_v they_o so_o full_o of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o courage_n and_o zeal_n that_o they_o do_v that_o which_o all_o the_o king_n and_o monarch_n of_o the_o earth_n speak_v now_o see_v it_o be_v clear_a by_o these_o reason_n that_o the_o have_v of_o this_o holy_a spirit_n be_v the_o way_n to_o all_o happiness_n first_o of_o all_o use_v 1_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o just_a reproof_n of_o those_o that_o will_v fain_o live_v happy_o and_o comfortable_o and_o yet_o never_o have_v any_o fervent_a longing_n nor_o make_v any_o earnest_a request_n for_o its_o part_n why_o shall_v you_o bear_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n be_v not_o you_o his_o better_a have_v you_o not_o he_o at_o a_o advantage_n why_o shall_v you_o not_o take_v he_o down_o and_o give_v he_o as_o good_a as_o he_o bring_v nay_o say_v the_o spirit_n you_o must_v not_o render_v evil_a for_o evil_n 5._o rom._n 12._o matth._n 5._o but_o rather_o overcome_v evil_a with_o goodness_n and_o bless_v they_o that_o curse_v you_o and_o
pray_v for_o such_o as_o hate_v you_o and_o persecute_v you_o in_o word_n or_o deed_n they_o have_v too_o much_o fire_n in_o they_o already_o and_o therefore_o do_v not_o you_o add_v more_o fuel_n thereunto_o lest_o the_o flame_n be_v redouble_v but_o rather_o cast_v water_n upon_o it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v extinguish_v thus_o do_v the_o spirit_n bring_v the_o weapon_n of_o god_n to_o the_o terrible_a curse_n of_o the_o law_n denounce_v against_o they_o in_o the_o public_a ministry_n or_o by_o the_o faithful_a deal_n of_o some_o christian_a friend_n which_o have_v thorough_o apply_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o word_n unto_o their_o drowsy_a conscience_n wherewith_o they_o be_v move_v for_o the_o time_n but_o afterward_o return_v to_o their_o vomit_n again_o then_o i_o this_o fight_n will_v appear_v wheresoever_o true_a sanctification_n be_v begin_v for_o the_o flesh_n will_v be_v unwilling_a to_o pray_v to_o hear_v to_o meditate_v to_o confer_v &_o in_o a_o word_n disburden_v their_o memory_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o may_v hurt_v they_o and_o to_o retain_v only_o such_o matter_n as_o may_v make_v they_o more_o humble_a and_o merciful_a and_o thankful_a this_o spiritual_a fight_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v a_o most_o infallible_a mark_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v the_o rather_o to_o be_v note_v because_o many_o of_o god_n servant_n through_o ignorance_n take_v it_o to_o be_v quite_o contrary_a we_o find_v say_v they_o such_o a_o deal_n of_o carnal_a reason_n so_o many_o sinful_a affection_n and_o lust_n &_o such_o unwillingnes_n and_o unfitnesse_n for_o every_o holy_a duty_n that_o we_o much_o doubt_v whether_o we_o have_v god_n spirit_n in_o we_o or_o not_o but_o who_o tell_v you_o that_o there_o be_v so_o many_o thing_n amiss_o in_o you_o who_o be_v it_o that_o cause_v you_o to_o see_v the_o error_n of_o your_o mind_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o your_o heart_n who_o be_v it_o that_o cause_v you_o to_o hate_v they_o and_o to_o be_v out_o of_o like_n with_o yourself_o for_o they_o who_o be_v it_o that_o enable_v you_o to_o take_v god_n part_n against_o they_o and_o to_o strive_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o be_v free_v from_o the_o bondage_n of_o they_o be_v it_o not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o work_v all_o these_o good_a thing_n in_o you_o and_o why_o then_o shall_v you_o make_v question_n whether_o it_o dwell_v in_o you_o yea_o or_o no_o these_o be_v fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v never_o find_v in_o any_o but_o in_o spiritual_a man_n and_o if_o any_o desire_n yet_o a_o further_a trial_n desire_n but_o what_o be_v they_o the_o better_a for_o they_o will_n some_o say_v if_o they_o can_v pour_v they_o forth_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o outward_a form_n of_o prayer_n they_o be_v much_o the_o better_a because_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o 27._o verse_n he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n know_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o he_o so_o know_v it_o that_o he_o approve_v zebedeus_n you_o know_v not_o what_o you_o ask_v they_o may_v speak_v what_o they_o listen_v of_o their_o often_o pray_v and_o how_o ready_o they_o can_v go_v through_o with_o their_o stint_n and_o task_n but_o they_o that_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n together_o in_o earnest_a request_n and_o fervent_a supplication_n can_v but_o judge_v they_o to_o be_v brag_v pharisees_n who_o think_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v behold_v unto_o they_o and_o indebt_v unto_o they_o for_o such_o prayer_n whereas_o in_o truth_n he_o may_v just_o condemn_v they_o unto_o hell_n for_o the_o same_o and_o will_v do_v so_o if_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v for_o they_o as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o iniquity_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v indeed_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v of_o another_o mind_n for_o when_o they_o have_v use_v the_o best_a preparation_n that_o possible_o they_o can_v they_o find_v so_o many_o defect_n in_o their_o prayer_n that_o they_o be_v drive_v to_o make_v a_o new_a prayer_n for_o the_o pardon_v of_o those_o their_o want_n and_o be_v stir_v up_o hearty_o to_o praise_v the_o lord_n when_o they_o can_v in_o any_o poor_a measure_n pour_v out_o their_o soul_n before_o he_o as_o know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o from_o any_o strength_n that_o they_o have_v in_o themselves_o but_o from_o the_o help_n
