insufficiency_n of_o good_a resolution_n viz._n that_o although_o the_o spirit_n be_v willing_a yet_o there_o be_v something_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o which_o weaken_v our_o best_a resolution_n and_o betray_v we_o into_o temptation_n our_o flesh_n be_v weak_a which_o be_v so_o near_o we_o as_o to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o ourselves_o make_v our_o case_n more_o dangerous_a and_o enforce_v the_o necessity_n of_o watchfulness_n and_o prayer_n but_o here_o arise_v one_o of_o the_o most_o useful_a necessary_a and_o important_a case_n that_o relate_v to_o practical_a christianity_n which_o i_o shall_v first_o set_v down_o in_o its_o full_a force_n and_o then_o endeavour_v to_o clear_v it_o the_o case_n be_v this_o how_o far_o and_o in_o what_o circumstance_n the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n do_v lessen_v the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v commit_v by_o it_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o extenuation_n of_o the_o sin_n why_o do_v our_o saviour_n mention_v it_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n and_o if_o it_o be_v than_o these_o inconvenience_n follow_v 1._o it_o seem_v to_o abate_v the_o necessity_n of_o our_o care_n and_o watchfulness_n if_o the_o sin_n be_v lessen_v through_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n which_o be_v unavoidable_a in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n 2._o it_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o fair_a plea_n and_o excuse_v for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n for_o 1._o the_o original_a inclination_n to_o sin_n in_o mankind_n come_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh_n the_o very_a frame_n of_o humane_a nature_n be_v such_o as_o expose_v they_o to_o continual_a temptation_n there_o be_v a_o natural_a combat_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n for_o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v and_o all_o mankind_n find_v it_o too_o true_a now_o 17._o wherever_o the_o flesh_n be_v there_o be_v inclination_n agreeable_a to_o it_o and_o these_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o mind_n all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n will_v appear_v to_o come_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n 2._o the_o frequent_a commission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n will_v be_v lay_v upon_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n for_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n do_v not_o sin_v out_o of_o defiance_n to_o god_n or_o his_o law_n or_o with_o a_o obstinate_a resolution_n to_o sin_n for_o they_o know_v their_o duty_n and_o wish_v they_o can_v perform_v it_o but_o alas_o the_o flesh_n be_v too_o hard_a for_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o they_o have_v many_o conviction_n in_o their_o mind_n many_o good_a purpose_n and_o serious_a resolution_n at_o some_o time_n and_o if_o they_o do_v sin_n it_o be_v not_o with_o their_o whole_a will_n for_o they_o have_v great_a struggle_n and_o check_n of_o conscience_n within_o even_o while_o they_o commit_v those_o sin_n and_o therefore_o what_o can_v their_o continue_n in_o sin_n be_v so_o proper_o attribute_v to_o as_o to_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n 3._o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n after_o repentance_n seem_v to_o proceed_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n for_o he_o that_o have_v once_o smart_v severe_o for_o his_o sin_n and_o suffer_v under_o the_o agony_n of_o conscience_n for_o they_o he_o that_o have_v go_v so_o far_o as_o not_o mere_o to_o lament_v his_o folly_n and_o to_o abhor_v his_o wickedness_n but_o to_o make_v solemn_a vow_n and_o promise_n and_o resolution_n never_o more_o to_o return_v to_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o conceive_v that_o such_o a_o one_o shall_v fall_v into_o his_o sin_n again_o with_o his_o whole_a mind_n and_o soul_n for_o the_o light_n of_o conscience_n when_o it_o be_v once_o thorough_o kindle_v be_v not_o easy_o put_v out_o it_o be_v a_o secret_a fire_n which_o burn_v inward_a and_o can_v hardly_o be_v extinguish_v and_o all_o those_o who_o sin_n against_o conscience_n the_o dictate_v of_o their_o mind_n be_v right_a while_o they_o commit_v their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o even_o these_o sin_n seem_v to_o be_v excuse_v by_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o scripture_n be_v plain_a and_o express_v that_o sin_n which_o do_v come_v from_o the_o flesh_n do_v exclude_v from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v manifest_a say_v st._n paul_n 20._o adultery_n fornication_n uncleanness_n lasciviousness_n etc._n etc._n drunkenness_n revel_v and_o such_o like_a which_o be_v proper_o sin_v of_o the_o flesh._n of_o the_o which_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o as_o i_o have_v also_o tell_v you_o in_o time_n past_a that_o they_o which_o do_v such_o thing_n shall_v not_o inherit_v 21._o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o in_o another_o place_n for_o this_o you_o know_v that_o no_o whoremonger_n 5._o nor_o unclean_a aught_o to_o have_v govern_v and_o keep_v under_o the_o law_n of_o their_o member_n that_o other_o by_o the_o same_o assistance_n which_o be_v offer_v to_o they_o have_v crucify_v the_o flesh_n with_o to_o sin_n after_o resolution_n against_o their_o sin_n not_o only_o lose_v all_o the_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o their_o mind_n but_o make_v it_o much_o hard_a for_o they_o either_o to_o make_v or_o trust_v their_o resolution_n again_o and_o consequent_o to_o be_v satisfy_v of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o repentance_n if_o we_o will_v then_o lay_v a_o sure_a foundation_n for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o our_o mind_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o such_o unconceivable_a moment_n as_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o repentance_n be_v let_v we_o call_v ourselves_o to_o a_o account_n as_o to_o this_o matter_n of_o the_o firm_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o our_o mind_n have_v we_o strict_o examine_v ourselves_o as_o to_o our_o particular_a sin_n for_o there_o be_v no_o age_n no_o employment_n no_o condition_n of_o life_n but_o have_v its_o temptation_n belong_v to_o it_o which_o require_v not_o only_o our_o care_n and_o consideration_n but_o resolution_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o they_o but_o suppose_v we_o have_v be_v overcome_v by_o the_o sin_n which_o do_v so_o easy_o beset_v we_o the_o work_n be_v hard_a to_o recover_v the_o ground_n we_o have_v lose_v than_o at_o first_o to_o maintain_v it_o but_o if_o we_o have_v sin_v we_o must_v repent_v and_o the_o soon_o the_o better_a but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v without_o awaken_n the_o drowsy_a and_o benumb_a endeavour_v to_o bring_v in_o among_o they_o and_o that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v close_o to_o that_o pure_a and_o primitive_a doctrine_n which_o they_o at_o first_o receive_v from_o hence_o we_o may_v consider_v a_o double_a obligation_n lie_v upon_o they_o 1._o to_o keep_v steadfast_a to_o that_o faith_n which_o they_o first_o receive_v without_o be_v seduce_v from_o it_o by_o the_o of_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o the_o apostle_n 2._o that_o which_o they_o at_o first_o receive_v be_v no_o certain_a rule_n for_o the_o false_a teacher_n may_v have_v be_v before_o they_o and_o mistake_v his_o meaning_n and_o at_o one_o time_n so_o remarkable_o that_o although_o he_o take_v care_n to_o rectify_v their_o misapprehension_n yet_o it_o be_v say_v from_o that_o time_n many_o of_o his_o disciple_n 66._o go_v back_o and_o walk_v no_o more_o with_o he_o so_o that_o the_o high_a infallibility_n in_o the_o teacher_n do_v not_o prevent_v the_o possibility_n or_o the_o danger_n of_o mistake_v in_o the_o hearer_n and_o whatsoever_o any_o vain_o pretend_v nothing_o can_v do_v it_o but_o transfuse_v the_o spirit_n of_o infallibility_n into_o all_o if_o we_o look_v over_o the_o himself_o as_o carnal_a and_o sell_v under_o sin_n although_o there_o be_v 14_o great_a struggle_n between_o the_o conviction_n of_o his_o conscience_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o carnal_a inclination_n yet_o as_o long_o as_o the_o latter_a prevail_v so_o that_o he_o can_v not_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o his_o mind_n and_o reason_n tell_v he_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v but_o do_v those_o how_o can_v he_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n if_o the_o good_a which_o he_o will_v he_o do_v not_o and_o the_o evil_n which_o he_o will_v not_o that_o he_o do_v as_o mere_o under_o the_o power_n of_o the_o law_n the_o other_o as_o under_o the_o grace_n and_o influence_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o one_o be_v like_o rough_a and_o a_o churlish_a sort_n of_o physic_n which_o search_v into_o every_o part_n and_o put_v all_o the_o ill_a humour_n of_o the_o body_n into_o motion_n and_o make_v a_o general_a disturbance_n and_o uneasiness_n within_o but_o say_v in_o the_o forego_n word_n they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o flesh_n do_v mind_n the_o 5._o thing_n of_o the_o flesh_n but_o they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o spirit_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n where_o the_o flesh_n in_o a_o moral_a sense_n take_v in_o all_o our_o sensual_a inclination_n which_o be_v sinful_a either_o in_o their_o nature_n or_o degree_n the_o spirit_n be_v that_o divine_a principle_n which_o possess_v the_o mind_n with_o the_o love_n and_o esteem_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o keep_v our_o natural_a inclination_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o god_n law_n to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v to_o be_v under_o the_o influence_n of_o carnal_a thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o pursuit_n of_o they_o our_o chief_a design_n to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v to_o have_v so_o deep_a and_o just_a a_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o his_o law_n upon_o our_o mind_n as_o to_o make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o please_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o subdue_v all_o such_o inclination_n which_o be_v repugnant_a to_o his_o will._n but_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a difficulty_n how_o to_o judge_v concern_v this_o matter_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o determine_v the_o least_o reflection_n or_o consideration_n will_v make_v they_o see_v how_o bad_a their_o condition_n be_v for_o they_o have_v no_o true_a sense_n of_o god_n or_o religion_n at_o all_o they_o have_v no_o serious_a thought_n or_o apprehension_n of_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n this_o world_n they_o pretend_v to_o know_v something_o of_o and_o have_v too_o great_a a_o esteem_n of_o the_o vanity_n and_o pleasure_n of_o it_o for_o these_o whole_o take_v up_o their_o heart_n and_o time_n and_o they_o have_v a_o savour_n and_o relish_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o their_o greatness_n or_o honour_n or_o entertainment_n of_o their_o appetite_n or_o fancy_n here_o buâ—_n if_o we_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o another_o world_n of_o god_n and_o heaven_n and_o a_o spiritual_a disposition_n of_o soul_n either_o they_o look_v on_o we_o with_o amazement_n as_o if_o they_o be_v insensible_a of_o such_o thing_n or_o else_o with_o scorn_n and_o contempt_n as_o if_o we_o go_v about_o to_o deceive_v they_o alas_o they_o be_v too_o wise_a to_o be_v impose_v upon_o by_o we_o and_o they_o have_v other_o thing_n to_o mind_n i_o be_o sure_a not_o great_a or_o weighty_a which_o therefore_o such_o as_o these_o must_v be_v set_v aside_o for_o it_o be_v too_o apparent_a that_o they_o be_v only_o sensual_a and_o carnal_o mind_v but_o as_o the_o papist_n distinguish_v of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n so_o may_v we_o of_o the_o carnal_a mind_n there_o be_v a_o gross_a and_o capernaitical_a sense_n and_o there_o be_v a_o more_o refine_a and_o if_o i_o may_v use_v the_o expression_n a_o more_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o it_o for_o although_o it_o be_v a_o great_a absurdity_n in_o they_o to_o suppose_v that_o a_o mere_a body_n can_v be_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o spirit_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o to_o suppose_v a_o carnal_a mind_n to_o have_v a_o mixture_n of_o some_o spiritual_a quality_n and_o disposition_n in_o it_o and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n so_o much_o hard_a to_o be_v perceive_v between_o the_o carnal_o and_o spiritual_o mind_v since_o there_o be_v the_o same_o faculty_n of_o perception_n reason_v and_o application_n in_o both_o and_o the_o same_o common_a principle_n of_o religion_n may_v be_v own_v by_o both_o which_o may_v in_o reason_n be_v suppose_v to_o make_v some_o impression_n on_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o more_o ingenuous_a part_n of_o mankind_n who_o be_v not_o give_v over_o to_o such_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n as_o the_o former_a be_v now_o how_o to_o distinguish_v between_o frequent_a good_a impression_n on_o the_o mind_n and_o a_o habitual_a temper_n and_o disposition_n be_v not_o so_o easy_a to_o all_o who_o be_v concern_v to_o distinguish_v they_o and_o yet_o a_o person_n may_v be_v thorough_o convince_v of_o his_o sin_n and_o tremble_v at_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o justice_n and_o severity_n of_o god_n against_o they_o he_o may_v have_v many_o check_n and_o reluctancy_n of_o as_o that_o hold_v which_o fall_v into_o it_o but_o a_o spring_n have_v it_o rise_v up_o within_o and_o so_o continue_v run_v when_o the_o other_o be_v spend_v a_o carnal_a mind_n may_v have_v many_o spiritual_a conviction_n and_o good_a motion_n and_o inclination_n but_o after_o a_o time_n they_o wear_v off_o and_o leave_v no_o last_a effect_n behind_o they_o but_o where_o there_o be_v a_o spring_n in_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o fresh_a and_o continual_a supply_n of_o such_o inclination_n as_o keep_v up_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o our_o saviour_n and_o act_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o good_a man_n and_o raise_v they_o up_o above_o carnal_a and_o sensual_a object_n to_o thing_n divine_a and_o spiritual_a and_o carry_v they_o through_o the_o passage_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prepare_v they_o for_o a_o better_a but_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v many_o thing_n which_o carry_v some_o resemblance_n to_o this_o principle_n within_o which_o come_v not_o up_o to_o it_o there_o may_v be_v such_o principle_n of_o education_n and_o good_a manner_n such_o awakening_n of_o conscience_n such_o a_o strength_n of_o natural_a reason_n and_o common_a ingenuity_n as_o may_v carry_v one_o on_o to_o do_v some_o very_a good_a thing_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v fall_v short_a of_o have_v a_o true_a principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n in_o he_o but_o then_o there_o must_v be_v another_o principle_n within_o which_o contradict_v this_o and_o prevail_v over_o it_o and_o carry_v he_o on_o to_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n which_o prove_v too_o strong_a for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o due_a regard_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o result_n of_o this_o discourse_n be_v since_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v mere_o passion_n not_o bring_v into_o their_o due_a order_n so_o many_o omission_n of_o personal_n and_o relative_n duty_n such_o variety_n of_o temper_n and_o weakness_n of_o resolution_n such_o coldness_n ourselves_o but_o he_o will_v judge_v the_o world_n in_o righteousness_n 31._o not_o according_a to_o the_o vain_a opinion_n man_n have_v of_o themselves_o not_o according_a to_o the_o rash_a censure_n or_o indiscreet_a flattery_n of_o other_o who_o can_v be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o we_o as_o we_o may_v do_v of_o ourselves_o and_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o the_o great_a importance_n to_o we_o since_o god_n be_v please_v to_o leave_v it_o so_o much_o to_o our_o own_o judgement_n that_o if_o we_o judge_v 31._o ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v let_v we_o not_o therefore_o do_v it_o careless_o partial_o and_o ineffectual_o but_o deal_v faithful_o and_o sincere_o with_o ourselves_o search_v for_o our_o most_o secret_a and_o belove_a sin_n and_o proceed_v against_o they_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o we_o shall_v wish_v we_o have_v do_v when_o we_o appear_v before_o the_o judgement_n seat_n of_o christ._n think_v with_o yourselves_o then_o how_o shall_v we_o then_o abhor_v those_o sin_n of_o the_o body_n which_o will_v expose_v both_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o the_o eternal_a vengeance_n of_o god_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v ashamed_a to_o have_v yield_v so_o much_o and_o so_o easy_o to_o the_o inclination_n of_o it_o against_o the_o conviction_n of_o reason_n the_o check_n of_o conscience_n and_o the_o plain_a command_n of_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o the_o thought_n of_o that_o day_n shall_v have_v the_o most_o powerful_a influence_n on_o we_o to_o keep_v our_o body_n in_o subjection_n to_o our_o mind_n and_o to_o subdue_v the_o irregular_a appetite_n that_o come_v from_o they_o for_o these_o body_n of_o we_o now_o be_v not_o so_o much_o companion_n as_o traitor_n to_o our_o soul_n hold_v a_o correspondence_n with_o their_o great_a enemy_n suggest_v counsel_n which_o tend_v to_o their_o destruction_n and_o the_o temptation_n which_o arise_v from_o they_o be_v so_o many_o and_o so_o bewitch_a that_o without_o a_o constant_a care_n our_o body_n may_v prove_v the_o ruin_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o those_o who_o have_v the_o great_a command_n over_o they_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v to_o keep_v under_o the_o passion_n that_o arise_v from_o they_o which_o may_v grow_v troublesome_a when_o they_o can_v govern_v and_o like_o discontent_a person_n be_v very_o uneasy_a when_o they_o be_v not_o gratify_v to_o their_o own_o desire_n it_o be_v therefore_o a_o great_a satisfaction_n to_o the_o mind_n of_o good_a man_n to_o think_v there_o be_v a_o day_n of_o resurrection_n come_v when_o their_o body_n shall_v no_o long_o be_v a_o â—ncumbrance_n or_o a_o temptation_n to_o their_o mind_n they_o shall_v neither_o hinder_v their_o happiness_n nor_o draw_v they_o from_o it_o thus_o all_o the_o dark_a temptation_n and_o cloudy_a vapour_n and_o disturb_v passion_n which_o arise_v from_o our_o body_n now_o shall_v be_v scatter_v and_o disperse_v and_o there_o shall_v be_v nothing_o but_o purity_n serenity_n and_o clearness_n in_o that_o state_n for_o then_o the_o righteous_a shall_v shine_v forth_o 43._o like_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o their_o father_n when_o the_o glorious_a light_n within_o shall_v break_v through_o the_o passage_n of_o the_o body_n and_o cause_n as_o great_a a_o splendour_n in_o it_o as_o the_o sun_n itself_o will_v have_v within_o so_o narrow_a a_o compass_n thus_o it_o be_v say_v
