unregenerate_a part_n now_o as_o the_o sap_n be_v great_a in_o the_o root_n than_o in_o the_o branch_n so_o the_o great_a sin_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v receive_v great_a punishment_n therefore_o if_o the_o root_n be_v not_o purge_v notwithstanding_o thou_o abstain_v from_o the_o outward_a action_n thou_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o mortify_a sin_n because_o thy_o heart_n what_o though_o we_o take_v pain_n in_o the_o mortify_n of_o our_o lust_n if_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o accompany_v we_o all_o be_v nothing_o worth_a therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v have_v this_o profit_n thereby_o to_o provide_v for_o his_o family_n but_o if_o the_o care_n for_o the_o world_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n exceed_v either_o in_o the_o manner_n or_o the_o measure_n that_o be_v if_o they_o be_v get_v unlawful_o and_o if_o the_o heart_n lust_n after_o they_o if_o they_o breed_v a_o disorder_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o a_o neglect_n of_o grace_n than_o they_o become_v sin_n now_o they_o be_v call_v member_n for_o these_o reason_n member_n the_o first_o reason_n be_v because_o these_o base_a affection_n fill_v up_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v they_o make_v this_o point_n first_o we_o will_v show_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v second_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v for_o the_o first_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v it_o be_v to_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n or_o heavenly_a thing_n in_o a_o earthly_a mind_v manner_n that_o be_v when_o the_o soul_n be_v deprave_v so_o of_o spiritual_a life_n that_o it_o look_v upon_o grace_n and_o salvation_n with_o a_o carnal_a eye_n when_o it_o be_v represent_v unto_o it_o because_o it_o be_v but_o natural_a it_o be_v not_o enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n now_o till_o a_o man_n be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o can_v see_v spiritual_a thing_n in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n howsoever_o i_o grant_v that_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n a_o man_n be_v endue_v apply_v spiritual_a thing_n by_o the_o sense_n but_o earthly_a thing_n second_o by_o the_o affection_n a_o man_n may_v conceive_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n for_o the_o affection_n be_v the_o proper_a seat_n 2_o of_o love_n and_o a_o man_n be_v endue_v with_o love_n may_v be_v affect_v with_o heavenly_a thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o nature_n and_o hence_o may_v arise_v fear_n of_o lose_v they_o not_o because_o they_o be_v heavenly_a thing_n but_o because_o they_o be_v sweet_a unto_o his_o nature_n beside_o the_o affection_n may_v restrain_v he_o and_o turn_v he_o from_o esteem_v of_o thing_n base_a to_o a_o esteem_v of_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o excellent_a and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o affection_n to_o good_a that_o prove_v a_o man_n to_o be_v good_a but_o it_o be_v the_o rice_n of_o the_o affection_n that_o be_v the_o ground_n from_o whence_o they_o spring_v namely_o from_o a_o heart_n enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n herod_n may_v affect_v john_n and_o johns_n doctrine_n but_o this_o be_v not_o breed_v by_o the_o spirit_n but_o a_o carnal_a affection_n three_o by_o the_o understanding_n or_o mind_n a_o man_n may_v come_v to_o conceive_v of_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n renew_v his_o mind_n may_v be_v enlighten_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o be_v but_o earthly_a mind_v as_o for_o example_n first_o he_o may_v see_v a_o virtue_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n he_o may_v conceive_v of_o they_o 1_o by_o look_v into_o they_o so_o that_o a_o virtue_n and_o power_n may_v appear_v in_o they_o excel_v every_o virtue_n in_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o yet_o not_o renew_v second_o if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o more_o noble_a spirit_n he_o may_v do_v desire_n follow_v the_o sense_n and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o one_o faculty_n so_o it_o be_v with_o all_o the_o other_o of_o the_o faculty_n for_o the_o faculty_n suit_v all_o after_o the_o
have_v their_o heart_n full_a of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o pleasure_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o they_o shall_v gripe_v christ_n &_o grace_n except_o they_o let_v fall_v that_o gripe_n that_o they_o have_v already_o of_o earthly_a thing_n therefore_o this_o be_v a_o false_a reason_n that_o man_n do_v object_n the_o second_o objection_n be_v because_o earthly_a thing_n be_v 2._o sensible_o feel_v and_o in_o thing_n that_o be_v sensible_o feel_v there_o be_v sweetness_n but_o as_o for_o other_o thing_n they_o be_v only_o conceive_v by_o the_o imagination_n as_o grace_v and_o other_o spiritual_a thing_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v man_n in_o this_o be_v excee_o deceive_v for_o if_o the_o lesser_a faculty_n be_v sensible_a then_o much_o more_o the_o great_a faculty_n and_o if_o the_o inferior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n have_v a_o sensible_a taste_n then_o certain_o the_o superior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o more_o sensible_a part_n for_o the_o great_a faculty_n have_v the_o great_a sense_n and_o as_o they_o be_v large_a so_o they_o grow_v deep_o to_o explain_v this_o take_v a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n as_o the_o conscience_n be_v the_o great_a faculty_n so_o it_o have_v the_o great_a sense_n in_o it_o for_o what_o it_o apprehend_v it_o be_v present_o sensible_a of_o whether_o it_o be_v joy_n or_o sorrow_n now_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o sense_n between_o the_o superior_a faculty_n and_o inferior_a faculty_n the_o schoolman_n make_v a_o threefold_a difference_n first_o say_v they_o that_o sense_n which_o the_o understanding_n or_o mind_n have_v be_v permanent_a it_o last_v for_o ever_o because_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v permanent_a it_o feel_v grace_n justification_n remission_n of_o sin_n it_o 1_o feel_v god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o spirit_n but_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o other_o faculty_n vanish_v and_o pass_v away_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v for_o the_o present_a taste_v a_o sermon_n well_o and_o another_o have_v taste_v a_o good_a work_n or_o a_o good_a turn_n do_v which_o in_o time_n be_v forget_v the_o remembrance_n of_o they_o last_v not_o for_o ever_o second_o these_o natural_a sense_n be_v but_o for_o the_o present_a that_o which_o you_o now_o 2_o taste_n be_v present_a that_o which_o you_o taste_v before_o be_v go_v this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o these_o faculty_n but_o it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o the_o understanding_n three_o these_o sense_n lessen_v through_o defect_n and_o weariness_n a_o man_n will_v be_v weary_a 3_o with_o eat_v of_o honey_n though_o it_o be_v pleasant_a unto_o the_o sense_n a_o man_n be_v weary_a with_o meat_n and_o with_o sleep_n with_o rest_n and_o with_o pleasure_n when_o as_o these_o be_v delight_n and_o very_o pleasant_a in_o the_o fruition_n but_o over_o much_o of_o any_o of_o these_o make_v they_o a_o burden_n but_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n be_v not_o so_o for_o they_o be_v endless_a justification_n remission_n of_o sin_n and_o reconciliation_n be_v without_o end_n therefore_o labour_v to_o find_v the_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o god_n rest_v not_o till_o thou_o get_v the_o spirit_n which_o bring_v grace_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o do_v but_o talk_v with_o those_o that_o have_v taste_v of_o this_o sweetness_n that_o have_v first_o taste_v of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o now_o have_v taste_v of_o spiritual_a and_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o one_o above_o the_o other_o heb._n 11._o 14_o etc._n etc._n they_o declare_v plain_o that_o they_o seek_v 14._o a_o city_n not_o in_o this_o world_n for_o than_o they_o may_v return_v but_o a_o heavenly_a place_n the_o three_o objection_n be_v because_o of_o the_o opinion_n and_o 2._o speech_n of_o man_n concern_v these_o earthly_a thing_n and_o this_o have_v a_o great_a force_n esa._n 6._o 5._o woe_n be_v i_o for_o i_o be_o a_o 5._o man_n of_o unclean_a lip_n and_o dwell_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o people_n of_o unclean_a lip_n that_o be_v i_o shall_v have_v a_o base_a opinion_n of_o this_o people_n if_o i_o shall_v prophesy_v unto_o they_o so_o mat._n 24._o 11._o many_o false_a prophet_n shall_v arise_v and_o deceive_v many_o 11._o that_o be_v man_n shall_v be_v take_v in_o a_o trap_n to_o do_v evil_a by_o the_o false_a opinion_n and_o speech_n of_o the_o multitude_n for_o man_n want_v spiritual_a knowledge_n 12._o they_o be_v like_o a_o countryman_n that_o come_v and_o see_v simile_n one_o draw_v a_o geometrical_a line_n begin_v to_o wonder_v what_o it_o mean_v marvel_v that_o he_o will_v spend_v his_o time_n in_o draw_v of_o such_o a_o line_n though_o he_o know_v well_o the_o use_n of_o it_o that_o draw_v it_o and_o to_o this_o purpose_n the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o pet._n 4._o 4._o they_o marvel_v that_o we_o run_v not_o with_o they_o unto_o the_o same_o excess_n of_o riot_n that_o be_v they_o 4._o can_v see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v as_o so_o likewise_o for_o all_o other_o in_o the_o like_a kind_n and_o according_o judge_v of_o yourselves_o whether_o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no._n the_o second_o sign_n whereby_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o 2._o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no_o be_v by_o the_o esteem_n that_o you_o have_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n whether_o you_o esteem_v they_o as_o a_o part_n of_o yourselves_o every_o faculty_n or_o habit_n have_v a_o object_n if_o thou_o be_v a_o carnal_a man_n then_o these_o earthly_a thing_n be_v that_o which_o delight_v thy_o soul_n but_o if_o thou_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v then_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v the_o delight_n of_o thy_o soul_n now_o touch_v a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o regenerate_v in_o these_o outward_a thing_n and_o you_o touch_v his_o life_n for_o he_o account_v his_o life_n as_o they_o for_o they_o be_v part_n of_o himself_o but_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o the_o spiritual_a man_n he_o account_v not_o of_o these_o earthly_a thing_n 2_o cor._n 4._o 5._o the_o apostle_n say_v we_o preach_v not_o ourselves_o that_o be_v we_o 5._o account_v not_o of_o the_o approbation_n of_o man_n nor_o any_o outward_a thing_n as_o a_o part_n of_o ourselves_o therefore_o if_o we_o want_v these_o we_o do_v not_o much_o care_n hereby_o then_o examine_v yourselves_o what_o be_v the_o thing_n you_o most_o delight_n in_o what_o be_v they_o earthly_a or_o mind_n 3._o of_o a_o man_n as_o for_o example_n a_o lantern_n be_v the_o proper_a seat_n of_o a_o candle_n now_o it_o receive_v not_o the_o candle_n simile_n for_o itself_o neither_o keep_v it_o the_o light_n to_o itself_o but_o it_o receive_v it_o in_o to_o preserve_v light_n and_o to_o communicate_v it_o to_o other_o even_o so_o do_v the_o understanding_n it_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v light_n for_o itself_o alone_o but_o by_o preserve_v of_o it_o it_o do_v communicate_v his_o light_n to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n so_o the_o apostle_n say_v you_o be_v beget_v by_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n james_n 1._o 18._o now_o truth_n be_v proper_o in_o the_o understanding_n it_o be_v first_o there_o and_o thence_o it_o do_v communicate_v unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n by_o redundance_n i_o say_v by_o redundance_n but_o not_o by_o infusion_n that_o be_v the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o the_o understanding_n do_v redound_v to_o the_o enlighten_v of_o rest_n but_o it_o be_v convey_v to_o the_o rest_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o a_o man_n be_v renew_v now_o for_o the_o better_a explayn_v of_o this_o we_o shall_v faculty_n show_v how_o the_o understanding_n be_v enlighten_v may_v do_v good_a unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n first_o the_o reason_n or_o wisdom_n be_v first_o enlighten_v it_o rest_v not_o there_o but_o flow_v by_o a_o redoundancy_n 1_o unto_o the_o other_o faculty_n and_o thereupon_o may_v take_v away_o those_o let_n and_o impediment_n unto_o good_a as_o thus_o whereas_o ignorance_n or_o infidelity_n be_v former_o a_o hindrance_n unto_o good_a thing_n make_v he_o that_o be_v ignorant_a uncapable_a of_o the_o mystery_n of_o salvation_n so_o that_o he_o can_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o can_v not_o bring_v his_o will_n and_o affection_n to_o embrace_v the_o truth_n which_o ignorance_n be_v now_o take_v away_o by_o that_o light_n that_o be_v communicate_v unto_o he_o by_o the_o understanding_n second_o although_o the_o understanding_n can_v remove_v fear_n and_o anger_n because_o they_o be_v quality_n of_o nature_n 2_o and_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o it_o get_v by_o adam_n fall_n yet_o it_o may_v hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o they_o it_o may_v withstand_v the_o action_n of_o they_o as_o a_o pilot_n can_v hinder_v the_o rage_a of_o the_o sea_n it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o power_n to_o simile_n make_v they_o calm_a yet_o he_o can_v by_o use_v mean_n do_v so_o much_o as_o to_o save_v his_o ship_n so_o a_o regenerate_a man_n though_o he_o can_v stay_v his_o impatient_a anger_n and_o fear_n yet_o he_o may_v keep_v himself_o from_o the_o action_n of_o impatient_a anger_n and_o so_o bridle_v his_o immoderate_a fear_n that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v distract_v with_o it_o three_o the_o understanding_n may_v do_v much_o good_a by_o instruction_n when_o it_o be_v renew_v and_o therefore_o it_o come_v 3_o many_o time_n that_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n be_v overturn_v by_o the_o reason_n as_o thus_o when_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v immoderate_o set_v upon_o a_o wrong_a object_n the_o mind_n come_v and_o instruct_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o vileness_n of_o the_o object_n and_o the_o danger_n that_o will_v ensue_v and_o then_o contrary_o inform_v they_o of_o grace_n propound_v heavenly_a object_n unto_o they_o hereupon_o they_o become_v affect_v with_o they_o and_o so_o be_v turn_v by_o the_o reason_n four_o it_o may_v do_v much_o good_a by_o the_o rule_n of_o 4_o they_o for_o the_o understanding_n be_v the_o superior_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o become_v a_o guide_n unto_o the_o rest_n now_o if_o the_o understanding_n be_v enlighten_v as_o i_o tell_v you_o it_o do_v communicate_v his_o light_n by_o redundancy_n unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o understanding_n be_v enlighten_v true_o with_o grace_n and_o the_o other_o faculty_n partake_v thereof_o they_o must_v needs_o be_v rule_v by_o it_o every_o inferior_a be_v rule_v by_o his_o superior_a or_o at_o least_o shall_v be_v so_o so_o every_o faculty_n shall_v be_v subordinate_a unto_o the_o mind_n now_o if_o there_o be_v a_o rebellion_n in_o they_o it_o be_v the_o disorder_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o the_o other_o be_v the_o disorder_n of_o the_o state_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o explain_n of_o these_o point_n namely_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v earthly_a mind_v and_o what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v the_o first_o use_v then_o shall_v be_v to_o reprove_v sharp_o such_o 1_o as_o favour_v the_o member_n of_o this_o body_n and_o be_v inordinate_o affect_v with_o this_o earthly_a mindedness_n such_o also_o as_o can_v deny_v these_o member_n any_o thing_n that_o be_v pleasant_a unto_o they_o whereas_o they_o shall_v be_v suppress_v and_o mortify_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o rich_a man_n feed_v these_o member_n with_o his_o riches_n the_o covetous_a man_n with_o his_o covetousness_n the_o proud_a man_n with_o his_o pride_n and_o the_o ambitious_a man_n with_o his_o vainglory_n when_o as_o these_o be_v their_o great_a enemy_n howsoever_o they_o be_v cozen_v by_o they_o but_o if_o they_o do_v but_o know_v if_o they_o be_v but_o true_o enlighten_v with_o grace_n they_o will_v perceive_v the_o evil_a of_o these_o member_n and_o how_o great_a a_o enemy_n this_o earthly_a mindedness_n be_v unto_o they_o and_o then_o they_o will_v starve_v their_o body_n soon_o than_o they_o shall_v deceive_v they_o of_o their_o soul_n for_o first_o as_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o hurtful_a unto_o man_n than_o earthly_a mindedness_n so_o second_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o hateful_a unto_o god_n and_o three_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o contrary_a unto_o the_o profession_n of_o christianity_n than_o the_o love_a of_o those_o earthly_a member_n for_o the_o first_o i_o say_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n mindedness_n more_o hurtful_a unto_o man_n than_o earthly_a mindedness_n because_o it_o make_v he_o worse_o than_o the_o beast_n the_o beast_n do_v not_o sin_n but_o these_o earthly_a member_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o and_o sin_n take_v away_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o creature_n innocency_n be_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o creature_n simple_o
