how_o a_o man_n must_v be_v quite_o weary_v out_o in_o the_o combat_n under_o this_o illumination_n but_o as_o it_o be_v say_v here_o of_o the_o first_o illumination_n viz._n that_o it_o be_v not_o make_v before_o the_o first_o purification_n be_v accomplish_v even_o unto_o its_o utmost_a degree_n so_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o second_o purification_n wherein_o the_o foundation_n be_v purge_v viz._n that_o we_o may_v then_o look_v for_o illumination_n when_o purification_n be_v full_o accomplish_v now_o though_o there_o be_v a_o disparity_n by_o reason_n by_o illumination_n yet_o there_o be_v none_o such_o by_o reason_n of_o purification_n for_o even_o as_o the_o first_o be_v perform_v gradual_o so_o also_o be_v the_o second_o there_o be_v no_o mean_n extant_a by_o who_o help_n god_n and_o our_o mind_n can_v be_v unite_v but_o only_o the_o most_o pure_a body_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o must_v be_v regenerate_v and_o become_v new_a creature_n now_o in_o time_n then_o must_v that_o be_v fulfil_v in_o our_o soul_n which_o be_v do_v in_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n for_o it_o behoove_v he_o to_o suffer_v to_o die_v to_o be_v lay_v in_o the_o sepulchre_n and_o then_o to_o rise_v represent_v to_o he_o the_o like_a to_o this_o may_v be_v say_v of_o a_o man_n bear_v of_o god_n who_o know_v all_o thing_n by_o his_o own_o proper_a experience_n whatever_o the_o scripture_n testify_v and_o express_v for_o all_o that_o be_v his_o nature_n and_o propriety_n and_o nothing_o be_v adverse_a to_o he_o which_o he_o can_v free_o do_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v no_o long_o under_o the_o law_n he_o know_v by_o his_o experience_n the_o way_n by_o which_o we_o be_v lead_v to_o regeneration_n or_o what_o regeneration_n or_o a_o man_n new_o bear_v again_o be_v as_o also_o what_o be_v his_o life_n his_o food_n his_o drink_n his_o exercise_n his_o work_n his_o going_z his_o standing_z etc._n etc._n and_o of_o these_o thing_n there_o be_v no_o need_n that_o any_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v command_v to_o he_o for_o he_o have_v all_o thing_n of_o himself_o and_o they_o be_v his_o propriety_n beside_o he_o free_o and_o willing_o do_v they_o nor_o can_v he_o do_v otherwise_o there_o be_v no_o need_n to_o tell_v a_o lover_n what_o love_n be_v nor_o a_o godly_a man_n what_o godliness_n be_v and_o because_o he_o be_v so_o come_v unto_o the_o very_a essence_n of_o thing_n that_o they_o be_v become_v his_o habit_n and_o use_n and_o be_v always_o present_a with_o he_o he_o can_v then_o be_v angry_a though_o he_o be_v contradict_v and_o the_o matter_n be_v not_o believe_v by_o man_n for_o else_o he_o know_v and_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o thing_n and_o that_o he_o who_o be_v against_o he_o aught_o to_o be_v subject_v to_o his_o judgement_n he_o who_o be_v full_o sound_a in_o health_n can_v be_v angry_a nor_o grieve_v though_o one_o shall_v say_v to_o he_o that_o he_o be_v sick_a for_o he_o feel_v that_o it_o be_v otherwise_o but_o he_o who_o have_v the_o thing_n only_o in_o notion_n but_o not_o in_o substance_n can_v bear_v contradiction_n and_o affront_n before_o we_o arrive_v at_o regeneration_n we_o must_v be_v drag_v through_o a_o unknown_a forsake_a and_o desolate_a path_n and_o god_n pull_v a_o man_n by_o this_o way_n against_o his_o will_n for_o when_o a_o man_n labour_v under_o the_o law_n so_o that_o he_o can_v advance_v no_o further_o and_o suppose_v that_o he_o be_v now_o arrive_v at_o the_o end_n of_o his_o journey_n then_o at_o length_n must_v he_o journey_n and_o be_v hurry_v through_o this_o unknown_a way_n the_o first_o way_n be_v pleasant_a and_o full_a of_o fresh-green_a herb_n though_o it_o also_o seem_v difficult_a and_o a_o man_n think_v that_o the_o end_n thereof_o will_v be_v god_n yet_o the_o end_n prove_v to_o be_v no_o other_o than_o this_o aforesaid_a rough-way_n which_o be_v purgatory_n in_o which_o a_o man_n be_v purge_v from_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v of_o the_o flesh_n god_n indeed_o draw_v a_o man_n hither_o and_o thither_o in_o this_o way_n and_o still_o some_o small_a piece_n of_o flesh_n be_v tear_v off_o here_o or_o there_o till_o it_o be_v leave_v quite_o bare_a and_o nothing_o but_o spirit_n remain_v then_o the_o man_n willing_o yield_v himself_o up_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o into_o those_o suffering_n because_o the_o carnal_a affection_n be_v thus_o consume_v in_o this_o purgatory_n so_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o remain_v but_o spirit_n then_o god_n come_v and_o appli_v himself_o unto_o man_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o be_v know_v of_o man_n and_o so_o this_o man_n come_v at_o length_n to_o arrive_v at_o true_a substance_n or_o essence_n of_o which_o he_o be_v make_v capable_a by_o this_o suffering_n for_o in_o this_o suffering_n or_o purgatory_n he_o be_v full_o purge_v and_o make_v fit_a to_o receive_v god_n when_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o help_v we_o than_o he_o exercise_v we_o with_o this_o suffering_n
for_o where_o the_o virtue_n of_o divine_a will_n be_v feel_v there_o such_o word_n do_v excite_v consternation_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o for_o he_o to_o say_v i_o hope_v it_o will_v be_v so_o or_o so_o or_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v or_o so_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v and_o the_o like_a but_o he_o say_v thus_o 〈◊〉_d hope_v the_o lord_n will_v do_v it_o christ_n say_v i_o be_o the_o truth_n we_o furthermore_o they_o say_v that_o the_o very_a incarnation_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o be_v thus_o adorn_v which_o opinion_n be_v it_o far_o from_o we_o he_o that_o be_v upon_o a_o right_a foundation_n and_o have_v a_o understand_a heart_n will_v be_v whole_o opposite_a to_o these_o opinion_n for_o such_o a_o one_o feel_v and_o know_v that_o without_o the_o incarnation_n of_o christ_n no_o salvation_n can_v be_v find_v on_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o ceremony_n together_o with_o all_o creature_n be_v only_o a_o representation_n of_o the_o heavenly_a truth_n and_o that_o they_o be_v all_o conformeâ—_n according_a to_o god_n but_o not_o according_a to_o we_o and_o so_o also_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o therefore_o they_o judge_v too_o dry_o concern_v they_o who_o say_v they_o be_v toy_n and_o trifle_n as_o also_o they_o do_v attribute_v too_o much_o to_o they_o who_o be_v glue_v fast_o unto_o they_o and_o from_o they_o do_v make_v god_n to_o themselves_o and_o set_v they_o in_o the_o place_n of_o the_o true_a substance_n they_o err_v on_o both_o hand_n wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o wait_v for_o a_o right_a judgement_n in_o all_o thing_n from_o the_o lord_n and_z and_z to_o man_n have_v not_o a_o true_a sense_n of_o sin_n but_o neglectâ—th_v it_o with_o a_o light_a mind_n this_o opinion_n also_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n who_o testify_v that_o christ_n must_v snatch_v a_o man_n out_o of_o sin_n and_o let_v up_o righteousness_n and_o break_v the_o serpent_n head_n and_o overcome_v all_o thing_n and_o that_o this_o victory_n ought_v to_o be_v do_v in_o a_o man_n and_o not_o to_o remain_v without_o he_o rom._n 8._o 4._o for_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o people_n in_o who_o all_o thing_n be_v do_v and_o fulfil_v which_o the_o prophet_n and_o the_o apostle_n and_o all_o ceremony_n testify_v let_v no_o man_n therefore_o deceive_v himself_o by_o impose_v upon_o christ_n any_o thing_n without_o himself_o where_o god_n do_v possess_v a_o man_n there_o god_n reign_v and_o keep_v he_o but_o man_n be_v not_o at_o all_o touch_v with_o any_o care_n for_o what_o belong_v to_o he_o can_v bear_v in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n without_o election_n but_o as_o god_n will_v so_o be_v a_o thing_n commend_v to_o he_o who_o will_v do_v all_o thing_n and_o where_o that_o be_v there_o be_v peace_n and_o no_o where_o else_o a_o certain_a person_n say_v such_o as_o the_o judgement_n be_v so_o i_o suffer_v under_o a_o heavy_a judgement_n heavy_o under_o a_o light_a judgement_n light_o when_o one_o also_o be_v ashamed_a befote_n his_o neighbour_n because_o of_o that_o for_o who_o sake_n he_o be_v ashamed_a before_o god_n conscience_n be_v more_o at_o quiet_a but_o when_o one_o for_o a_o secret_a hide_a baseness_n blush_v not_o before_o man_n conscience_n be_v burden_v and_o therefore_o here_o we_o must_v be_v bind_v and_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v ashamed_a when_o he_o be_v oblige_v to_o confess_v himself_o guilty_a before_o his_o neighbour_n god_n keep_v his_o promise_n but_o we_o understand_v they_o perverse_o until_o their_o own_o â—ime_n come_v when_o we_o see_v god_n to_o he_o and_o consequent_o heaven_n he_o be_v also_o without_o appropriation_n and_o nothing_o else_o please_v he_o as_o if_o 〈◊〉_d be_v heaven_n unless_o that_o god_n will_v it_o but_o before_o any_o one_o come_v thither_o many_o thing_n be_v require_v especial_o time_n he_o who_o want_v this_o resign_v will_n esteem_v all_o that_o be_v against_o his_o own_o will_n for_o torment_n and_o hell_n yea_o even_o those_o thing_n which_o of_o themselves_o be_v pleasant_a out_o proper_a will_n therefore_o be_v to_o be_v discard_v and_o to_o this_o purpose_n serve_v our_o exercise_n o_o terror_n to_o the_o flesh_n that_o when_o any_o thing_n be_v spokâ—en_v to_o it_o of_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v fright_v and_o tremble_v because_o the_o spirit_n be_v its_o destruction_n they_o who_o aim_v at_o a_o mark_n shut_v one_o eye_n and_o always_o level_a at_o the_o mark_n and_o when_o one_o hit_v the_o mark_n than_o he_o turn_v himself_o and_o look_n upon_o all_o the_o rest_n which_o reject_v for_o he_o be_v impotent_a whilst_o he_o hang_v on_o the_o cross_n nor_o can_v he_o execute_v his_o own_o will_n chap._n xv._o all_o thing_n be_v or_o consist_v in_o order_n &_o order_n must_v be_v keep_v if_o one_o be_v willing_a to_o knit_v together_o superior_a thing_n that_o he_o may_v loosen_v inferior_a thing_n he_o will_v break_v order_n and_o wander_v in_o error_n of_o which_o we_o must_v beware_v the_o lord_n say_v he_o that_o break_v the_o least_a commandment_n and_o shall_v so_o teach_v etc._n etc._n we_o must_v seek_v a_o free_a condion_fw-la in_o god_n in_o low_a then_o be_v they_o the_o image_n of_o thing_n superior_a and_o that_o which_o be_v visible_a denote_v that_o that_o be_v invisible_a the_o spirit_n also_o have_v its_o flesh_n in_o which_o it_o dwell_v also_o mystery_n have_v their_o external_a history_n they_o who_o urge_v mystery_n so_o as_o to_o exclude_v history_n disturb_v order_n and_o do_v err_v although_o christ_n the_o bless_a fulfil_v all_o thing_n in_o spirit_n in_o his_o elect_a which_o he_o perform_v coporal_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n yet_o be_v they_o also_o corporal_o do_v in_o he_o therefore_o the_o historical_a sense_n must_v remain_v but_o also_o it_o behoove_v a_o man_n to_o experience_n in_o his_o own_o self_n the_o mystery_n likewise_o the_o lord_n say_v love_v your_o enemy_n the_o cross_n passion_n adversity_n death_n etc._n etc._n be_v our_o enemy_n which_o we_o be_v to_o love_v and_o embrace_v the_o natural_a man_n be_v surround_v with_o death_n and_o which_o way_n soever_o he_o turn_v himself_o he_o have_v a_o sword_n present_v to_o his_o sight_n just_a as_o when_o one_o turn_n on_o this_o and_o on_o that_o side_n shall_v look_v about_o he_o and_o still_o some_o body_n run_v in_o kindle_a with_o divine_a pleasure_n be_v a_o great_a pleasure_n but_o the_o cross_n and_o violent_a plague_n follow_v after_o it_o myrrh_n be_v the_o last_o gift_n for_o it_o be_v write_v they_o offer_v gold_n franckincense_n and_o myrrh_n when_o i_o hear_v the_o scripture_n i_o be_o fright_v for_o it_o denote_v the_o natural_a death_n nature_n will_v have_v a_o appropriation_n therefore_o communion_n be_v a_o death_n to_o it_o at_o which_o it_o be_v affright_v chap._n xvi_o to_o desist_v from_o propriety_n and_o to_o help_v another_o at_o our_o own_o loss_n be_v a_o thing_n true_o pleasant_a to_o find_v gain_n in_o loss_n and_o to_o abstain_v from_o that_o which_o be_v best_a in_o our_o esteem_n and_o to_o prefer_v
he_o yet_o stand_v in_o the_o creature_n he_o that_o stand_v in_o god_n he_o have_v no_o business_n with_o the_o creature_n but_o with_o god_n and_o know_v he_o to_o be_v faithful_a and_o just_a in_o judgement_n to_o such_o a_o man_n no_o injury_n can_v be_v do_v for_o whatsoever_o happen_v unto_o he_o he_o know_v it_o to_o be_v decree_v by_o god_n jordan_n be_v the_o river_n of_o judgement_n to_o put_v thereinto_o by_o another_o who_o be_v above_o he_o and_o strong_a than_o himself_o just_o as_o it_o be_v now_o with_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o matter_n be_v also_o carry_v in_o this_o other_o death_n of_o which_o it_o be_v say_v viz._n when_o any_o one_o think_v he_o have_v find_v his_o soul_n and_o that_o he_o be_v confirm_v in_o life_n yet_o must_v he_o be_v subject_v unto_o death_n now_o the_o lord_n suffer_v he_o first_o to_o grow_v and_o to_o increase_v and_o grow_v ripe_a in_o youth_n but_o when_o he_o be_v accomplish_v in_o that_o youth_n he_o plain_o care_v not_o for_o death_n and_o though_o he_o know_v that_o a_o time_n of_o die_a must_v come_v yet_o lie_n lay_v it_o not_o close_o to_o heart_n till_o he_o be_v grow_v old_a than_o death_n fright_v he_o and_o stand_v before_o his_o eye_n and_o yet_o neither_o then_o do_v he_o know_v how_o much_o misery_n there_o be_v there_o to_o be_v meet_v with_o for_o if_o he_o know_v it_o he_o will_v die_v aforehand_o for_o mere_a grief_n they_o who_o depart_v from_o earthly_a thing_n according_a to_o the_o testimony_n of_o conscience_n that_o they_o may_v seek_v the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o to_o arrive_v at_o true_a ripeness_n of_o youth_n rejoice_v in_o this_o death_n when_o they_o hear_v of_o it_o and_o understand_v it_o because_o of_o the_o fruit_n that_o spring_v from_o thence_o but_o they_o who_o be_v in_o this_o death_n be_v destitute_a of_o that_o joy_n for_o if_o they_o can_v yet_o have_v any_o joy_n they_o will_v still_o have_v life_n and_o consequent_o can_v not_o be_v in_o death_n because_o what_o ever_o die_v be_v separate_v from_o all_o life_n posterity_n only_a life_n and_o rejoice_v nothing_o be_v due_a to_o corruption_n but_o death_n and_o destruction_n and_o in_o death_n all_o thing_n be_v remove_v as_o faith_n and_o trust_v and_o hope_v and_o charity_n and_o all_o joy_n and_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v find_v be_v to_o be_v forsake_v now_o if_o it_o be_v to_o be_v forsake_v and_o lose_v it_o must_v first_o be_v find_v out_o and_o take_v up_o for_o that_o which_o one_o have_v not_o he_o can_v give_v up_o now_o that_o which_o here_o be_v thus_o to_o be_v forsake_v be_v also_o destitute_a of_o hope_n as_o be_v say_v and_o therefore_o this_o desertion_n be_v donâ—_n not_o with_o delight_n but_o with_o great_a aâ—â—â—ction_n the_o first_o desertion_n indeed_o be_v doâ—â—_n with_o joy_n because_o then_o some_o better_a thing_n be_v hope_v for_o but_o that_o hope_n be_v not_o here_o but_o in_o this_o point_n there_o be_v a_o total_a forsake_v and_o a_o be_v make_v naked_a oh_o all_o side_n gain_n as_o they_o say_v make_v labour_n sweet_a but_o mat_n labour_n out_o of_o which_o no_o gain_n be_v hope_v for_o be_v without_o doubt_n a_o matter_n hard_a and_o bitter_a and_o sharp_a labour_n at_o first_o be_v sweet_a because_o gain_v spring_v therefrom_o viz._n that_o the_o life_n or_o soul_n may_v be_v find_v which_o also_o be_v find_v but_o when_o this_o life_n be_v find_v it_o be_v lose_v again_o in_o that_o same_o die_a and_o a_o man_n be_v alienate_v from_o himself_o and_o god_n possess_v the_o place_n of_o self_n and_o there_o be_v no_o more_o mountain_n or_o valley_n but_o god_n alone_o for_o nature_n be_v quite_o shut_v out_o chap._n v._n if_o sin_n be_v not_o neither_o will_v death_n be_v if_o death_n be_v not_o neither_o will_v there_o be_v a_o resurrection_n therefore_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o good_a for_o the_o elect_a now_o that_o which_o first_o depart_v from_o earthly_a thing_n be_v present_o after_o elevate_v into_o divine_a and_o so_o remain_v in_o itself_o without_o death_n for_o though_o it_o may_v die_v as_o to_o its_o gross_a earthly_a nature_n or_o creature_n yet_o as_o to_o its_o self_n it_o be_v without_o death_n as_o have_v only_o change_v one_o state_n into_o another_o and_o stand_v still_o in_o its_o own_o life_n and_o yet_o be_v but_o the_o natural_a man_n in_o his_o own_o propriety_n though_o in_o a_o more_o pure_a estate_n and_o thus_o he_o proceed_v from_o state_n to_o state_n from_o a_o low_a to_o a_o high_a from_o a_o pure_a one_o to_o one_o more_o pure_a and_o although_o all_o that_o be_v here_o say_v of_o state_n be_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o death_n and_o corruption_n accomplish_v yet_o the_o man_n himself_o remain_v yet_o in_o himself_o without_o and_o beyond_o death_n and_o corruption_n for_o he_o be_v still_o the_o same_o and_o can_v forsake_v his_o propriety_n and_o stand_v in_o desire_n as_o to_o god_n as_o he_o before_o stand_v inâ—desâ—â—_n as_o to_o the_o creature_n and_o thus_o he_o ascend_v and_o go_v forward_o until_o he_o arrive_v at_o the_o most_o pure_a and_o noble_a state_n it_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o our_o sinful_a flesh_n in_o the_o death_n of_o a_o natural_a man_n the_o will_n of_o god_n only_o rule_v viz._n because_o that_o god_n so_o will_v it_o and_o it_o so_o please_v he_o and_o his_o judgement_n thus_o require_v it_o hither_o a_o man_n be_v to_o refer_v himself_o this_o be_v his_o only_a restand_v quiet_a viz._n the_o will_n of_o god_n thing_n plain_o happen_v otherwise_o than_o one_o think_v all_o thing_n observe_v another_o manner_n than_o a_o man_n think_v chap._n xii_o there_o be_v no_o come_n unto_o a_o internal_a state_n or_o spiritual_a exercise_n except_o first_o all_o the_o ceremony_n be_v break_v by_o affliction_n the_o warm_a bed_n be_v to_o be_v leave_v there_o be_v man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o idolatry_n exceed_v that_o hardship_n and_o patient_o endure_v the_o cold_a and_o incommodity_n why_o may_v not_o the_o same_o be_v do_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o the_o true_a worship_n and_o though_o at_o the_o beginning_n when_o one_o be_v settle_v in_o a_o custom_n of_o lie_v in_o bed_n the_o thing_n will_v not_o be_v without_o difficulty_n yet_o in_o time_n it_o will_v become_v easy_a and_o a_o man_n will_v hate_v his_o bed_n and_o the_o too_o much_o use_v thereof_o and_o will_v not_o use_v it_o but_o for_o necessity_n all_o thing_n whatsoever_o which_o be_v at_o first_o do_v with_o great_a difficulty_n they_o become_v gentle_a and_o easy_a by_o use_n a_o man_n must_v combat_v stout_o and_o with_o affliction_n too_o that_o lay_v aside_o his_o confusion_n he_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o order_n and_o consequent_o that_o god_n may_v draw_v near_o unto_o he_o he_o that_o be_v keep_v in_o confusion_n and_o neglect_v the_o mean_n of_o his_o get_n forward_o can_v be_v promote_v but_o many_o year_n and_o time_n be_v spend_v with_o he_o so_o that_o he_o sâ—ill_o remain_v that_o which_o he_o be_v and_o the_o fault_n be_v in_o some_o prop_n or_o support_v he_o have_v either_o secret_o or_o manifest_o as_o well_o in_o small_a as_o in_o great_a matter_n where_o nature_n be_v crucify_v there_o she_o want_v a_o prop_n for_o on_o what_o another_o be_v uphold_v and_o proppd_v up_o with_o on_o that_o the_o can_v lean_v herself_o we_o must_v beware_v of_o every_o affair_n that_o be_v use_v for_o to_o pass_v away_o time_n sportful_o and_o unprofitable_o time_n be_v to_o be_v weigh_v in_o a_o balance_n and_o to_o be_v spend_v on_o god_n for_o it_o be_v precious_a and_o run_v swift_o whatsoever_o be_v to_o a_o man_n most_o difficult_a and_o bitter_a that_o he_o must_v do_v and_o whatsoever_o be_v most_o easy_a and_o sweet_a that_o he_o must_v omit_v to_o keep_v himself_o pure_a in_o impurity_n be_v a_o piece_n of_o art_n and_o commendable_a but_o let_v no_o man_n that_o be_v already_o out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o such_o mingle_v himself_o with_o they_o for_o that_o will_v be_v a_o rashness_n whereas_o he_o that_o be_v in_o they_o already_o aught_o to_o enter_v into_o this_o combat_n and_o to_o conquer_v the_o enemy_n and_o with_o tear_n and_o sorrow_n break_v through_o the_o hostile_a troop_n that_o which_o be_v here_o say_v of_o impurity_n be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v in_o themselves_o impure_a for_o no_o purify_a person_n can_v pass_v through_o they_o when_o they_o be_v prohibit_v and_o be_v not_o in_o the_o least_o allow_v of_o but_o of_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o impure_a of_o themselves_o yet_o be_v such_o by_o which_o a_o man_n may_v be_v pollute_v by_o reason_n of_o his_o own_o proper_a impurity_n when_o he_o satisfi_v not_o his_o own_o conscience_n and_o walk_v not_o straight_o forward_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n he_o that_o will_v not_o suffer_v be_v afflict_v in_o the_o earth_n he_o err_v in_o his_o understanding_n when_o one_o be_v lead_v into_o the_o revelation_n and_o knowledge_n of_o many_o thing_n but_o he_o himself_o remain_v without_o and_o beyond_o they_o the_o lord_n say_v what_o will_v it_o profit_v a_o man_n to_o gain_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n he_o also_o that_o go_v into_o the_o marriage_n without_o a_o wedding-garment_n be_v cast_v out_o for_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v notional_o by_o knowledge_n and_o in_o the_o understanding_n he_o have_v not_o substantial_o and_o real_o in_o the_o science_n of_o thing_n a_o man_n glori_v and_o be_v glad_a and_o delight_v when_o he_o speak_v or_o write_v of_o they_o all_o thing_n be_v do_v with_o joy_n but_o when_o the_o substance_n or_o essence_n of_o thing_n come_v he_o lie_v down_o in_o death_n nor_o can_v he_o rejoice_v or_o be_v delight_v because_o he_o partake_v nothing_o and_o have_v no_o thing_n therein_o but_o his_o death_n and_o destruction_n the_o science_n or_o knowledge_n of_o they_o can_v no_o more_o make_v he_o merry_a because_o they_o be_v contrary_a unto_o he_o and_o whatever_o he_o know_v read_v hear_v oâ—_n think_v concern_v they_o that_o all_o make_v against_o he_o because_o all_o these_o thing_n aâ—_n contrary_a or_o adverse_a unto_o he_o chap._n xiii_o when_o a_o man_n lie_v in_o death_n he_o no_o long_o his_o own_o for_o he_o plain_o alienate_v from_o his_o own_o self_n her_o therefore_o he_o cease_v from_o labour_n neither_o do_v he_o act_v any_o more_o and_o god_n stanâ—_n in_o the_o stead_n of_o himself_o and_o fulfil_v and_o erect_v that_o in_o judgement_n of_o god_n chap._n fourteen_o when_o a_o man_n perceive_v that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o abide_v in_o his_o present_a state_n and_o to_o be_v at_o rest_n and_o to_o subsist_v in_o it_o than_o the_o spirit_n cease_v and_o the_o man_n slip_v down_o out_o of_o the_o spirit_n into_o the_o flesh_n there_o the_o rule_n or_o government_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v hinder_v and_o the_o literal_a kingdom_n be_v set_v up_o there_o than_o be_v no_o long_o a_o spiritual_a kingdom_n nor_o a_o increase_n nor_o proficiency_n but_o a_o go_v backward_o and_o a_o leap_v back_o again_o into_o the_o flesh_n and_o into_o the_o creature_n and_o then_o begin_v hatred_n and_o persecution_n towards_o the_o adverse_a part_n that_o they_o will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o receive_v they_o into_o their_o house_n that_o be_v they_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n come_v near_o they_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o that_o and_o thus_o these_o must_v suffer_v by_o and_o from_o they_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o forego_n be_v horrible_a whereas_o before_o that_o it_o do_v seem_v to_o be_v noble_a yet_o in_o respect_n of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o god_n for_o by_o how_o much_o the_o sublime_a be_v the_o corruption_n by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o noble_a will_v be_v the_o fruit_n for_o a_o man_n be_v still_o lead_v more_o deep_o and_o deep_o into_o affliction_n the_o former_a state_n be_v always_o more_o eligible_a in_o respect_n of_o that_o which_o follow_v so_o that_o a_o man_n as_o far_o as_o he_o be_v in_o the_o forego_n can_v account_v of_o himself_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o follow_a a_o we_o may_v bear_v it_o and_o be_v unite_v with_o it_o moreover_o those_o man_n who_o thus_o lie_v in_o death_n have_v little_a or_o no_o comeliness_n in_o they_o but_o be_v very_o much_o deform_v and_o therefore_o he_o who_o be_v conversant_a with_o they_o must_v beware_v lest_o he_o imitate_v their_o word_n or_o behaviour_n for_o whatsoever_o they_o do_v or_o omit_v to_o do_v be_v silent_a in_o or_o speak_v it_o be_v all_o perform_v in_o death_n nor_o can_v any_o life_n joy_n comfort_n or_o pleasure_n lay_v hold_v of_o they_o in_o this_o state_n they_o be_v untouched_a by_o he_o of_o god_n for_o from_o he_o flow_v the_o help_n and_o assistance_n and_o that_o accompany_v with_o the_o desertion_n and_o renounciation_n of_o all_o thing_n visible_a and_o inferior_a by_o mean_n of_o many_o affliction_n this_o be_v that_o state_n to_o know_v christ_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n in_o which_o all_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v leave_v before_o we_o come_v to_o the_o other_o desertion_n where_o chirst_n appear_v and_o be_v acknowledge_v or_o know_v in_o spirit_n nor_o do_v he_o ever_o appear_v as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o former_a or_o forego_v state_n to_o observe_v order_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o to_o be_v exorbitant_a in_o nothing_o keep_v the_o mind_n free_a but_o when_o it_o be_v otherwise_o there_o arise_v burden_n and_o care_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o liberty_n allow_v for_o profitable_a exercise_n because_o of_o the_o great_a heap_n of_o confusion_n that_o hinder_v the_o man_n whoever_o therefore_o will_v be_v free_v from_o all_o pernicious_a imagination_n he_o ought_v to_o beware_v that_o when_o he_o err_v upon_o one_o hand_n be_v turn_v therefrom_o that_o he_o err_v not_o also_o on_o the_o other_o for_o a_o burden_n await_v upon_o he_o on_o either_o the_o man_n be_v well_o enough_o but_o else_o affliction_n wait_v on_o the_o flesh_n chap._n xxv_o whatsoever_o have_v receive_v life_n aught_o to_o die_v paul_n say_v if_o you_o live_v according_a cross_n alone_o conversion_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v give_v and_o there_o it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v or_o hear_v our_o answer_n all_o fruit_n grow_v out_o of_o pressure_n affliction_n and_o misery_n which_o be_v every_o where_o present_v by_o thing_n visible_a let_v every_o one_o therefore_o become_v subject_a to_o the_o cross_n and_o let_v he_o not_o fly_v from_o it_o at_o all_o god_n know_v the_o conclusion_n of_o every_o thing_n and_o prepare_v its_o end_n how_o compassionate_o also_o do_v he_o deal_v with_o we_o no_o man_n ever_o perish_v but_o he_o that_o do_v flee_v from_o viz._n the_o fear_n of_o eternal_a damnation_n by_o mean_n of_o which_o he_o abstain_v from_o all_o external_a and_o carnal_a filthiness_n and_o impurity_n and_o cut_v off_o those_o thing_n from_o himself_o be_v then_o full_o persuade_v that_o now_o he_o be_v true_o at_o liberty_n so_o that_o he_o will_v not_o proceed_v further_o on_o and_o refuse_v to_o deny_v and_o resign_v up_o both_o the_o proper_a and_o the_o imaginary_a salvation_n of_o his_o soul_n although_o he_o shall_v experience_n or_o feel_v in_o himself_o that_o the_o true_a righteousness_n which_o be_v acceptable_a before_o god_n be_v that_o very_a circumcision_n that_o be_v do_v in_o spirit_n and_o thence_o spring_v up_o the_o new-creature_n of_o god_n however_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o every_o one_o shall_v first_o satisfy_v in_o all_o respect_v his_o own_o proper_a righteousness_n holiness_n and_o imaginary_a salvation_n that_o in_o the_o end_n he_o may_v right_o understand_v the_o difference_n of_o both_o viz._n of_o light_n and_o darkness_n and_o of_o the_o holiness_n that_o be_v from_o man_n and_o that_o which_o be_v from_o god_n for_o if_o he_o be_v not_o faithful_a in_o the_o small_a thing_n how_o shall_v he_o arrive_v at_o great_a which_o certain_o be_v impossible_a therefore_o it_o behoove_v every_o one_o to_o satisfy_v his_o own_o conscience_n and_o with_o all_o moderation_n and_o discretion_n to_o obey_v the_o testimony_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n that_o be_v raise_v up_o through_o all_o the_o degree_n of_o holiness_n and_o be_v enrich_v with_o all_o the_o affluence_n riches_n and_o imaginary_a good_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n he_o may_v at_o length_n be_v bring_v to_o the_o divine_a poverty_n of_o spirit_n by_o the_o manifestation_n in_o he_o of_o the_o divine_a righteousness_n and_o of_o that_o degree_n which_o be_v by_o far_o the_o most_o excellent_a and_o exalt_a as_o be_v that_o which_o throw_v down_o all_o the_o rest_n so_o as_o there_o remain_v nothing_o that_o can_v stand_v before_o it_o which_o be_v not_o its_o own_o self_n by_o this_o way_n we_o come_v to_o apprehend_v ourselves_o to_o be_v poor_a miserable_a reject_v and_o condemn_v yea_o blind_a unhappy_a and_o neglect_v yea_o unfit_a to_o perform_v any_o the_o least_o good_a who_o former_o ascribe_v to_o ourselves_o all_o good_a thing_n righteousness_n and_o salvation_n be_v confident_o persuade_v of_o our_o eternal_a â—ife_n and_o divine_a sonship_n then_o then_o i_o say_v it_o be_v that_o we_o find_v ourselves_o to_o be_v whole_o in_o corruption_n and_o condemnation_n at_o length_n serious_o understand_v that_o we_o former_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o â—he_v true_a taste_n of_o any_o good_a which_o can_v compare_v with_o that_o good_a which_o we_o now_o â—ee_n and_o then_o we_o come_v and_o ready_o sit_v â—own_v by_o all_o other_o man_n yea_o though_o they_o â—e_v the_o most_o profligate_v wretch_n because_o â—ow_o at_o last_o we_o begin_v to_o set_v before_o our_o eye_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o condemnation_n and_o to_o behold_v our_o corruption_n at_o the_o very_a bottom_n so_o that_o for_o the_o future_a we_o reflect_v upon_o no_o one_o more_o than_o upon_o ourselves_o and_o if_o before_o we_o revile_v any_o repulse_v persecute_a cast_v out_o reproach_v or_o look_v upon_o they_o with_o a_o evil_a eye_n i_o speak_v of_o such_o so_o much_o the_o more_o he_o will_v judge_v that_o he_o be_v propitious_a to_o he_o but_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n require_v first_o before_o we_o can_v learn_v to_o acknowledge_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n for_o when_o we_o be_v first_o overwhelm_v by_o any_o adversity_n than_o we_o either_o throw_v the_o blame_n upon_o man_n or_o we_o complain_v that_o god_n do_v afflict_v we_o and_o this_o thy_o accommodation_n that_o so_o thou_o will_v behold_v no_o body_n else_o but_o look_n at_o thy_o own_o self_n for_o it_o behoove_v thou_o to_o find_v salvation_n in_o thy_o own_o self_n and_o so_o also_o thou_o be_v to_o make_v experiment_n of_o die_a for_o thyself_o he_o that_o be_v honest_a without_o himself_o he_o also_o be_v save_v without_o himself_o and_o the_o salvation_n of_o such_o a_o one_o stand_v always_o in_o need_n
desire_n as_o also_o that_o i_o place_v more_o confidence_n in_o the_o lord_n then_o in_o my_o own_o letter_n be_v fix_v in_o this_o firm_a hope_n that_o he_o will_v direct_v all_o thing_n to_o the_o best_a end_n and_o that_o he_o will_v apply_v a_o remedy_n to_o all_o distraction_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o that_o he_o will_v thrust_v they_o all_o under_o his_o obedience_n for_o even_o as_o i_o myself_o according_a to_o my_o simple_a way_n do_v confide_v in_o the_o lord_n alone_o in_o all_o my_o necessity_n wait_v for_o help_v from_o he_o only_o so_o also_o i_o judge_v the_o like_a of_o thou_o with_o firm_a belief_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v out_o of_o his_o compassion_n behold_v and_o look_v upon_o thy_o case_n and_o will_v deliver_v thou_o from_o all_o thy_o trouble_n of_o heart_n although_o this_o thy_o state_n may_v press_v thou_o to_o so_o much_o the_o more_o diligent_a and_o fervent_a and_o more_o continual_a call_n upon_o god_n and_o to_o a_o great_a abode_n in_o his_o to_o indignation_n and_o to_o impatience_n but_o if_o thou_o be_v never_o look_v back_o and_o be_v subdue_a the_o flesh_n with_o a_o just_a and_o true_a zeal_n and_o will_v accomplish_v the_o root_n out_o from_o thyself_o the_o serpentine_a nature_n at_o length_n by_o the_o break_n forth_o of_o the_o divine_a illumination_n thou_o shall_v find_v great_a grace_n in_o these_o thing_n but_o here_o be_v need_n of_o great_a and_o accurate_a examination_n and_o the_o lord_n be_v at_o all_o time_n both_o night_n and_o day_n to_o be_v call_v upon_o with_o a_o fervent_a mind_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v wisdom_n on_o thou_o to_o know_v thyself_o and_o all_o thy_o stain_n of_o nature_n even_o the_o most_o hide_a that_o thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o cure_v they_o diligent_o to_o renounce_v they_o and_o whole_o to_o die_v unto_o they_o for_o after_o that_o the_o flesh_n be_v wither_v and_o nature_n dead_a the_o new_a creature_n may_v at_o last_o be_v plant_v in_o thou_o who_o source_n be_v out_o and_o from_o god_n and_o not_o out_o and_o from_o man_n and_o the_o admonition_n of_o man_n nor_o out_o and_o from_o any_o external_a ceremonious_a rite_n for_o it_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n who_o be_v a_o spirit_n in_o our_o spirit_n so_o also_o be_v all_o the_o true_a spiritual_a circumcision_n of_o all_o thing_n internal_a in_o our_o soul_n where_o it_o be_v also_o promise_v to_o we_o that_o by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n the_o eternal_a god_n the_o saviour_n shall_v be_v raise_v up_o in_o we_o out_o of_o his_o own_o seed_n who_o shall_v abolish_v all_o enmity_n which_o still_o lie_v between_o god_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n himself_o and_o will_v eternal_o unite_v we_o with_o god_n and_o will_v bring_v we_o to_o our_o original_a which_o be_v god_n himself_o dearest_n n._n i_o shall_v indeed_o write_v more_o of_o this_o to_o thou_o for_o i_o further_a desire_n that_o thou_o will_v thyself_o set_v too_o thy_o hand_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o that_o thou_o will_v get_v a_o live_a sense_n in_o thy_o heart_n of_o all_o these_o for_o in_o thy_o own_o self_n thou_o will_v find_v a_o true_a monitor_n who_o will_v more_o right_o than_o i_o can_v
