nature_n or_o degree_n the_o spirit_n be_v that_o divine_a principle_n which_o possess_v the_o mind_n with_o the_o love_n and_o esteem_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o keep_v our_o natural_a inclination_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o god_n law_n to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v to_o be_v under_o the_o influence_n of_o carnal_a thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o pursuit_n of_o they_o our_o chief_a design_n to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v to_o have_v so_o deep_a and_o just_a a_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o his_o law_n upon_o our_o mind_n as_o to_o make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o please_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o subdue_v all_o such_o inclination_n which_o be_v repugnant_a to_o his_o will._n but_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a difficulty_n how_o to_o judge_v concern_v this_o matter_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o
proportion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o particular_a person_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v whether_o we_o be_v carnal_o or_o spiritual_o mind_v for_o as_o those_o who_o be_v carnal_a while_o they_o follow_v their_o carnal_a inclination_n may_v have_v many_o inward_a struggle_n by_o spiritual_a conviction_n so_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v may_v meet_v with_o many_o combat_n from_o the_o flesh_n which_o may_v be_v troublesome_a where_o it_o can_v prevail_v but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o spirit_n struggle_v against_o the_o flesh_n in_o the_o carnal_o mind_v and_o the_o flesh_n struggle_v against_o the_o spirit_n in_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o perfect_a victory_n there_o will_v be_v some_o opposition_n and_o the_o best_a have_v so_o many_o fail_n to_o complain_v of_o in_o this_o world_n so_o many_o infirmity_n and_o defect_n in_o their_o good_a action_n so_o many_o passion_n not_o bring_v into_o their_o due_a order_n so_o many_o omission_n of_o personal_n and_o relative_n duty_n such_o variety_n of_o temper_n and_o weakness_n of_o resolution_n such_o coldness_n in_o devotion_n and_o unreasonable_a dejection_n of_o mind_n so_o many_o unaccountable_a fear_n and_o such_o dreadful_a apprehension_n of_o death_n and_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o that_o these_o thing_n must_v make_v great_a abatement_n as_o to_o such_o as_o be_v true_o spiritual_o mind_v but_o by_o all_o these_o thing_n the_o difficulty_n still_o increase_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v time_n to_o come_v to_o the_o resolution_n of_o it_o and_o that_o will_v be_v by_o show_v that_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o carnal_a and_o spiritual_a mind_n lie_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o in_o the_o deliberate_a judgement_n and_o choice_n 2._o in_o the_o prevail_a interest_n 3._o in_o the_o constant_a rule_n and_o measure_n of_o action_n 1._o in_o the_o deliberate_a judgement_n and_o choice_n for_o the_o main_a difference_n as_o to_o the_o carnal_a and_o spiritual_a mind_n lie_v in_o the_o different_a end_n which_o be_v aim_v at_o by_o they_o where_o the_o chief_a end_n be_v the_o please_a ourselve_o and_o the_o enjoy_n of_o any_o thing_n as_o our_o happiness_n under_o the_o supreme_a good_a whatever_o thought_n and_o intention_n we_o may_v at_o some_o time_n have_v to_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o turn_v our_o soul_n from_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n as_o long_o as_o we_o continue_v pursue_v a_o wrong_a end_n we_o have_v too_o great_a reason_n to_o conclude_v our_o mind_n to_o be_v yet_o carnal_a and_o sell_v under_o sin_n for_o while_o the_o apostle_n represent_v himself_o so_o he_o tell_v we_o he_o have_v his_o conscience_n thorough_o awaken_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o sin_n even_o of_o those_o which_o the_o world_n be_v least_o apt_a to_o be_v sensible_a of_o 9_o inward_a and_o secret_a sin_n he_o be_v not_o only_o convince_v of_o the_o excellency_n and_o purity_n of_o the_o law_n 12.14.22_o but_o have_v some_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n in_o it_o he_o have_v some_o hearty_a desire_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o his_o belove_a sin_n but_o yet_o they_o be_v too_o hard_o for_o he_o he_o sigh_v and_o lament_v under_o his_o deplorable_a condition_n but_o till_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n come_v to_o set_v he_o free_a he_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a and_o hopeless_a state_n but_o how_o be_v it_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n thus_o refine_v and_o purify_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n so_o as_o of_o carnal_a to_o make_v they_o spiritual_a when_o the_o same_o passion_n and_o inclination_n remain_v a_o change_n there_o must_v be_v and_o that_o real_a and_o spiritual_a and_o therefore_o in_o our_o best_a faculty_n viz._n our_o understanding_n and_o our_o will_n not_o by_o a_o revelation_n of_o new_a object_n to_o the_o mind_n nor_o by_o offer_v any_o force_n upon_o the_o will_n but_o by_o fix_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o the_o choice_n of_o the_o will_n upon_o the_o best_a and_o most_o desirable_a object_n which_o be_v god_n himself_o as_o the_o supreme_a good_n the_o turn_v of_o the_o soul_n which_o make_v one_o spiritual_o mind_v must_v not_o be_v only_o from_o gross_a and_o sensual_a inclination_n but_o from_o every_o other_o kind_n of_o good_a which_o stand_v in_o competition_n with_o the_o supreme_a a_o true_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v one_o that_o be_v possess_v with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n above_o all_o and_o that_o value_v other_o thing_n as_o they_o tend_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o god_n must_v be_v the_o only_a centre_n of_o his_o hope_n and_o design_n for_o in_o he_o alone_o his_o true_a happiness_n consist_v as_o the_o psalmist_n express_v it_o who_o have_v i_o in_o heaven_n but_o thou_o 73.25_o and_o there_o be_v none_o upon_o earth_n i_o desire_v beside_o thou_o whatever_o fall_v short_a of_o this_o may_v agree_v to_o a_o carnal_a mind_n but_o a_o carnal_a level_v their_o perfection_n and_o suppose_v they_o to_o deserve_v the_o same_o degree_n of_o affection_n from_o we_o but_o there_o may_v be_v many_o spiritual_a notion_n in_o man_n mind_n about_o god_n and_o religion_n about_o mystical_a union_n and_o the_o participation_n of_o divine_a love_n man_n seem_v spiritual_a rapture_n and_o ecstasy_n and_o yet_o there_o may_v not_o be_v this_o spiritual_a mind_n for_o the_o heat_n of_o enthusiasm_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v very_o spiritual_a but_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n they_o be_v spiritual_a as_o they_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o great_a heat_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o force_n of_o a_o vehement_a imagination_n which_o have_v be_v often_o accompany_v with_o as_o vehement_a a_o inclination_n to_o sensual_a pleasure_n which_o show_v the_o plain_a difference_n between_o a_o exalt_v fancy_n and_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n a_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v not_o only_o thorough_o convince_v of_o the_o reality_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o of_o their_o excellency_n and_o desirableness_n above_o any_o other_o that_o can_v be_v offer_v to_o our_o choice_n it_o see_v through_o all_o the_o be_v too_o cold_a and_o speculative_a they_o may_v have_v noble_a and_o refine_a speculation_n about_o the_o invisible_a world_n may_v be_v full_o convince_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v see_v can_v not_o be_v what_o they_o be_v be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o see_v and_o that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o see_v be_v of_o incomparable_o great_a value_n than_o those_o which_o be_v so_o much_o more_o admire_a because_o they_o be_v see_v but_o we_o must_v not_o conclude_v that_o because_o man_n do_v real_o believe_v spiritual_a thing_n therefore_o they_o be_v
