with_o all_o for_o christ_n he_o they_o will_v not_o take_v he_o upon_o all_o condition_n they_o see_v some_o need_n they_o have_v of_o christ_n but_o not_o much_o and_o so_o they_o will_v forsake_v some_o thing_n for_o he_o but_o not_o all_o they_o be_v loath_a to_o part_v with_o their_o master_n sin_n like_o the_o young_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n he_o have_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o part_v with_o his_o possession_n christ._n but_o to_o these_o three_o thing_n must_v be_v oppose_v three_o other_o thing_n to_o bring_v we_o to_o christ_n 1._o faith_n to_o believe_v he_o be_v god_n 2._o a_o sleight_n humiliation_n to_o bring_v we_o in_o love_n with_o christ._n 3._o sound_v humiliation_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o part_v with_o all_o for_o his_o sake_n the_o first_o be_v receive_v among_o all_o christian_n although_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v that_o many_o do_v believe_v it_o but_o confuse_o the_o second_o be_v a_o slight_a manner_n of_o apprehend_v of_o christ_n and_o that_o a_o little_a sorrow_n will_v do_v a_o little_a humiliation_n but_o the_o three_o which_o we_o must_v have_v before_o we_o can_v be_v save_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o forsake_v all_o to_o leave_v every_o sin_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n and_o that_o we_o will_v not_o do_v until_o we_o be_v thorough_o humble_v humiliation_n &_o be_v full_o break_v hearted_a therefore_o first_o a_o deep_a humiliation_n be_v necessary_a for_o salvation_n second_o if_o we_o have_v not_o such_o a_o humiliation_n then_o either_o 1._o we_o will_v not_o come_v to_o christ._n 2._o or_o we_o will_v not_o stay_v with_o he_o 3._o or_o else_o we_o will_v not_o do_v or_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o he_o and_o if_o we_o want_v any_o of_o these_o we_o can_v be_v save_v first_o if_o we_o be_v not_o true_o humble_v we_o can_v never_o come_v to_o christ_n christ._n nor_o regard_v he_o we_o may_v preach_v christ_n long_o enough_o and_o no_o body_n will_v regard_v he_o except_o they_o be_v sound_o humble_v for_o their_o sin_n as_o in_o the_o law_n no_o body_n do_v care_n for_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n but_o he_o that_o have_v slay_v a_o man_n to_o he_o only_o who_o the_o revenger_n of_o blood_n pursue_v be_v the_o city_n of_o refuge_n sweet_a when_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n have_v sting_v a_o man_n than_o he_o look_v to_o the_o brazen-serpent_n and_o nevertill_a then_o so_o when_o we_o see_v our_o sin_n and_o misery_n thereby_o then_o i_o say_v and_o never_o till_o then_o be_v christ_n welcome_a the_o prodigal_a son_n never_o think_v of_o return_v home_o to_o his_o father_n until_o he_o see_v that_o he_o must_v else_o starve_v when_o he_o see_v he_o can_v no_o long_o subsist_v than_o he_o return_v so_o when_o we_o be_v so_o humble_v for_o our_o sin_n that_o we_o see_v we_o shall_v indeed_o be_v damn_v without_o christ_n then_o and_o never_o until_o then_o we_o care_v for_o he_o second_o he_o although_o we_o do_v come_v to_o christ_n yet_o without_o we_o be_v true_o humble_v we_o will_v never_o stay_v with_o he_o althoug_v we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o his_o light_n for_o a_o season_n and_o for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o consider_v the_o four_o sort_n of_o ground_n which_o represent_v four_o sort_n of_o hearer_n ground_n mat._n 13._o 13._o the_o first_o be_v not_o humble_v at_o all_o it_o fall_v by_o the_o way_n side_n and_o present_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n devour_v it_o vers_n 4_o the_o second_o be_v humble_v a_o little_a but_o not_o so_o much_o as_o to_o suffer_v for_o he_o the_o sun_n parch_v they_o for_o lack_v of_o root_a vers_fw-la 6._o the_o three_o sort_n be_v so_o far_o humble_v for_o sin_n that_o they_o suffer_v some_o persecution_n but_o will_v not_o part_v with_o all_o for_o christ_n the_o world_n they_o be_v say_v to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n with_o patience_n other_o may_v stay_v a_o while_n with_o christ_n but_o when_o that_o come_v that_o they_o prefer_v before_o christ_n than_o they_o leave_v christ_n for_o until_o a_o man_n can_v bring_v his_o heart_n to_o that_o pass_n that_o he_o can_v prize_v christ_n above_o all_o thing_n undergo_v all_o persecution_n for_o his_o sake_n he_o be_v not_o sound_o humble_v but_o be_v like_o the_o second_o and_o three_o ground_n 3._o if_o we_o stay_v thus_o with_o christ_n he_o yet_o except_o we_o be_v thus_o humble_v we_o shall_v neither_o suffer_v nor_o do_v any_o thing_n for_o christ._n if_o christ_n have_v bid_v paul_n before_o he_o be_v humble_v to_o have_v do_v so_o much_o for_o he_o as_o he_o do_v he_o will_v never_o have_v do_v many_o lust_n that_o do_v encumber_v we_o while_o our_o heart_n be_v unbroken_a so_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o baseness_n on_o the_o outside_n of_o religion_n that_o except_o we_o be_v humble_v we_o will_v never_o like_v it_o but_o shall_v be_v offend_v at_o it_o and_o like_o proud_a servant_n say_v our_o wage_n be_v too_o little_a our_o fellow-servant_n too_o base_a but_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o that_o have_v once_o be_v sound_o humble_v think_v all_o too_o good_a for_o he_o second_o 2._o there_o be_v such_o strong_a lust_n to_o be_v mortify_v which_o can_v be_v do_v without_o humiliation_n that_o we_o care_v not_o for_o christ_n our_o lust_n indeed_o may_v for_o a_o while_n sleep_n but_o when_o once_o they_o be_v awake_v like_o samson_n they_o crack_v a_o two_o all_o the_o bond_n of_o good_a purpose_n and_o vow_n they_o be_v never_o slay_v until_o we_o be_v sound_o humble_v three_o 3_o there_o be_v such_o contrary_a law_n to_o be_v delight_v in_o that_o we_o can_v part_v from_o so_o many_o isaack_n which_o every_o man_n at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o will_v be_v call_v upon_o to_o offer_v up_o the_o which_o if_o he_o do_v not_o do_v he_o will_v damn_v his_o own_o soul_n yet_o until_o he_o be_v humble_v and_o show_v what_o damnation_n be_v he_o will_v not_o buy_v salvation_n so_o dear_a for_o these_o cause_n be_v humiliation_n necessary_a in_o the_o first_o place_n therefore_o in_o the_o scripture_n this_o method_n be_v always_o use_v sanctification_n by_o the_o prophet_n apostle_n and_o christ_n himself_o they_o preach_v ever_o repentance_n and_o humiliation_n before_o sanctification_n and_o justification_n this_o be_v christ_n order_n as_o you_o may_v see_v luke_n 4._o thus_o do_v nathan_n with_o david_n he_o labour_v to_o humble_v he_o meek_a and_o so_o be_v all_o he_o and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o three_o question_n now_o to_o proceed_v further_o in_o the_o explication_n of_o humiliation_n and_o come_v to_o the_o four_o question_n which_o be_v this_o whether_o this_o humiliation_n must_v be_v in_o all_o man_n 4._o as_o well_o in_o those_o which_o be_v well_o educate_v and_o have_v fall_v into_o no_o gross_a sin_n as_o in_o other_o i_o answer_v answ._n yes_o it_o must_v be_v in_o all_o even_o this_o great_a humiliation_n here_o speak_v of_o else_o let_v they_o go_v never_o so_o far_o they_o will_v in_o the_o end_n fall_v away_o and_o that_o be_v the_o very_a reason_n why_o so_o many_o professor_n that_o have_v give_v up_o their_o name_n to_o follow_v christ_n fall_v away_o because_o they_o be_v never_o humble_v sound_o for_o sin_n yet_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o humiliation_n of_o one_o bring_v up_o well_o sinner_n and_o a_o gross_a sinner_n 1._o the_o filth_n of_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o sudden_o reveal_v to_o those_o that_o have_v be_v well_o bring_v up_o and_o have_v some_o knowledge_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o so_o sudden_o smite_v as_o to_o those_o that_o live_v in_o ignorance_n all_o their_o life_n long_o those_o that_o have_v a_o light_n on_o the_o sudden_a it_o present_o amaze_v they_o even_o so_o god_n strike_v down_o sudden_o the_o gross_a sinner_n and_o amaze_v he_o with_o a_o more_o violent_a sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n than_o he_o do_v the_o other_o 2._o the_o joy_n be_v not_o so_o sudden_a nor_o flash_a nor_o sensible_a in_o he_o that_o have_v more_o knowledge_n the_o medicine_n be_v know_v to_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o wound_n he_o know_v christ_n a_o saviour_n offer_v up_o for_o all_o that_o be_v wound_v for_o sin_n and_o so_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o feel_v the_o wound_n he_o apply_v the_o medicine_n so_o be_v not_o his_o trouble_n so_o irksome_a neither_o be_v deliver_v have_v he_o such_o sensible_a joy_n for_o instance_n suppose_v a_o man_n be_v in_o the_o way_n wound_v among_o thief_n and_o almost_o kill_v so_o that_o he_o see_v no_o mean_n of_o life_n if_o one_o a_o friend_n of_o he_o on_o the_o sudden_a shall_v step_v forth_o and_o help_v he_o he_o will_v be_v more_o sensible_a of_o it_o than_o such_o a_o one_o as_o know_v before_o he_o shall_v be_v rob_v get_v company_n to_o go_v with_o he_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o danger_n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o four_o question_n the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o 5._o what_o be_v the_o least_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n that_o must_v be_v in_o one_o that_o will_v be_v save_v i_o answer_v it_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v bring_v we_o home_o to_o christ_n answ._n that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v make_v we_o apprehend_v sin_n to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n in_o the_o world_n good_a and_o christ_n to_o be_v the_o great_a good_a so_o much_o as_o will_v enable_v we_o to_o make_v sin_n our_o chief_a sorrow_n and_o christ_n our_o chief_a joy_n when_o we_o do_v so_o than_o whatsoever_o be_v offer_v we_o neglect_v for_o christ_n and_o prefer_v he_o thence_o be_v it_o that_o the_o church_n be_v say_v to_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a 1_o pet._n 1._o 8._o for_o when_o we_o apprehend_v sin_n to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n and_o by_o christ_n to_o beefree_v from_o it_o thing_n we_o must_v needs_o rejoice_v unspeakable_o for_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o our_o conversion_n consist_v in_o threething_n 1._o in_o be_v sound_o humble_v so_o that_o we_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n in_o the_o world_n 2._o in_o steadfast_o lay_v hold_n of_o christ_n and_o believe_v in_o he_o so_o that_o we_o will_v not_o part_v with_o he_o for_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n 3._o in_o a_o newness_n of_o life_n walk_v in_o obedience_n to_o all_o his_o commandment_n and_o therefore_o christ_n say_v john_n 16._o he_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n and_o righteousness_n first_o to_o humble_a for_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o also_o there_o be_v degree_n for_o here_o one_o may_v be_v humble_v more_o than_o another_o and_o so_o thirst_v after_o christ_n more_o but_o the_o more_o we_o be_v humble_v the_o better_a we_o be_v humble_v it_o be_v a_o sign_n god_n have_v a_o great_a work_n to_o do_v by_o we_o when_o we_o be_v thus_o humble_v it_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o we_o that_o we_o be_v prone_a to_o think_v that_o we_o be_v humble_v enough_o and_o that_o our_o humiliation_n at_o our_o first_o conversion_n be_v enough_o no_o belove_v our_o humiliation_n must_v not_o be_v like_o a_o land-flood_n that_o run_v but_o for_o a_o little_a time_n but_o like_o a_o spring_n run_v continual_o for_o all_o degree_n in_o grace_n depend_v on_o god_n mortification_n of_o our_o lust_n etc._n etc._n depend_v on_o the_o degree_n of_o our_o humiliation_n and_o he_o that_o be_v the_o most_o humble_a will_v be_v much_o more_o if_o he_o see_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o better_a and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o five_o question_n the_o six_o question_n be_v this_o 6._o how_o shall_v we_o come_v to_o be_v thus_o humble_v i_o answer_v answ._n by_o the_o law_n for_o though_o the_o whole_a act_n of_o our_o humiliation_n be_v wrought_v by_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n humiliation_n rom._n 6._o yet_o that_o humiliation_n which_o i_o now_o such_o thing_n be_v naught_o and_o to_o be_v avoid_v although_o it_o may_v be_v for_o a_o time_n thou_o may_v keep_v down_o thy_o conscience_n and_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o speak_v out_o for_o the_o noise_n thy_o lust_n make_v yet_o when_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o lie_v upon_o thy_o deathbed_n and_o at_o the_o last_o day_n when_o thou_o shall_v appear_v before_o god_n in_o judgement_n then_o for_o certain_a shall_v thou_o find_v these_o to_o be_v sin_n and_o that_o to_o thy_o cost_n thou_o now_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v some_o thing_n and_o put_v away_o thy_o sin_n from_o thou_o but_o that_o will_v not_o serve_v the_o turn_n harken_v therefore_o now_o to_o thy_o conscience_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o do_v not_o tell_v thou_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n be_v sinful_a here_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v object_n a_o godly_a man_n sometime_o may_v have_v a_o scruple_n in_o conscience_n whether_o he_o be_v to_o do_v such_o or_o such_o thing_n now_o therefore_o wherein_o lie_v side_n be_v most_o probable_a and_o that_o he_o must_v follow_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n if_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n of_o morality_n than_o thou_o be_v the_o more_o to_o be_v suspect_v for_o the_o moral_a law_n be_v ingraft_v into_o our_o heart_n for_o a_o instance_n if_o it_o be_v about_o the_o neglect_n of_o the_o sabbath_n or_o about_o company_n keep_v and_o the_o like_a the_o conscience_n that_o be_v a_o virgin_n and_o never_o will_v be_v corrupt_v that_o will_v tell_v thou_o these_o thing_n and_o persuade_v thou_o of_o they_o indeed_o sometime_o thou_o may_v have_v a_o sear_a conscience_n past_a feeling_n and_o then_o when_o once_o thy_o conscience_n have_v do_v tell_v of_o thou_o than_o thou_o be_v in_o a_o pitiful_a case_n 3_o 3._o thou_o may_v discern_v of_o they_o by_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o action_n action_n if_o they_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n they_o will_v be_v trouble_v about_o that_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o life_n will_v be_v good_a but_o thou_o may_v quick_o gather_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o rage_a sin_n or_o no_o for_o than_o they_o will_v do_v all_o thing_n on_o the_o other_o side_n and_o one_o know_v sin_n draw_v on_o another_o and_o the_o falseness_n of_o their_o heart_n will_v be_v discern_v in_o other_o thing_n also_o for_o one_o reign_v sin_n be_v like_a to_o a_o disease_n that_o weaken_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o body_n for_o even_o so_o that_o weaken_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o first_o question_n the_o second_o question_n be_v this_o quest._n he_o that_o be_v a_o carnal_a man_n may_v say_v i_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n as_o well_o as_o other_o and_o although_o i_o do_v sometime_o sin_v yet_o i_o allow_v not_o myself_o therein_o and_o what_o can_v a_o godly_a man_n do_v or_o say_v more_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n godly_a man_n and_o wicked_a may_v go_v far_o together_o differ_v but_o in_o themselves_o they_o differ_v much_o therefore_o first_o i_o will_v show_v how_o far_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o agree_v and_o differ_v and_o second_o how_o they_o may_v be_v discern_v 1._o journey_n in_o these_o thing_n they_o agree_v and_o differ_v first_o both_o may_v agree_v in_o the_o way_n and_o yet_o differ_v in_o the_o end_n their_o journey_n end_n may_v be_v 2._o several_a place_n for_o the_o end_n of_o all_o that_o a_o godly_a man_n do_v be_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n but_o the_o good_a which_o a_o wicked_a man_n do_v be_v either_o out_o of_o some_o present_a fear_n or_o hope_v or_o flash_n of_o conscience_n or_o for_o some_o by-respect_n so_o that_o in_o all_o he_o aim_v most_o at_o his_o own_o profit_n it_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o inward_a man_n a_o new_a regenerate_v heart_n as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o godly_a simile_n for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n travel_v and_o by_o chance_n fall_v into_o london_n road_n because_o it_o be_v coincident_a with_o his_o way_n and_o not_o because_o his_o journey_n lie_v to_o london_n but_o only_o for_o that_o be_v his_o ready_a and_o perhaps_o clean_a way_n now_o we_o can_v say_v that_o man_n tend_v to_o london_n for_o all_o that_o because_o here_o the_o denomination_n be_v take_v from_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o his_o journey_n 2._o evil_a they_o both_o agree_v and_o differ_v for_o the_o disapprove_v of_o evil_a i_o know_v that_o this_o may_v be_v in_o the_o wicked_a a_o disapprove_v of_o evil_a as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o godly_a wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a disapprove_v of_o evil_a 1._o that_o that_o arise_v from_o a_o principle_n nature_n twofold_n in_o conscience_n 2._o from_o a_o true_a principle_n of_o regeneration_n if_o thy_o disallow_v of_o sin_n do_v but_o arise_v from_o a_o natural_a conscience_n that_o be_v nothing_o but_o if_o it_o be_v from_o a_o principle_n of_o regeneration_n that_o be_v from_o a_o new_a disposition_n that_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o if_o from_o it_o we_o disallow_v sin_n our_o case_n be_v good_a but_o now_o the_o sign_n whereby_o we_o shall_v discern_v between_o these_o two_o regenerate_a be_v three_o the_o first_o sign_n be_v this_o if_o thou_o do_v disallow_v thyself_o in_o sin_n from_o a_o new_a principle_n of_o regeneration_n thou_o will_v abstain_v from_o sin_n with_o delight_n sin_n and_o settle_v upon_o goodness_n as_o a_o stone_n or_o
