power_n of_o the_o very_a hope_n of_o enjoy_v god_n in_o immortal_a glory_n in_o order_n to_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o every_o man_n that_o have_v this_o hope_n in_o he_o purify_v himself_o as_o he_o be_v pure_a where_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o put_v you_o in_o mind_n that_o these_o word_n purify_v himself_o as_o he_o be_v pure_a design_n and_o express_v a_o imitation_n not_o a_o equality_n of_o god_n holiness_n and_o perfection_n the_o latter_a of_o these_o be_v whole_o impossible_a to_o every_o creature_n the_o former_a necessary_a for_o every_o person_n that_o serious_o aim_v at_o immortality_n nor_o shall_v i_o stand_v to_o divide_v the_o word_n into_o any_o small_a minute_n part_n lest_o by_o insist_v upon_o they_o i_o shall_v as_o it_o happen_v in_o such_o case_n lose_v or_o own_o profession_n and_o yet_o experience_n clear_o show_v that_o it_o have_v not_o this_o effect_n upon_o they_o which_o the_o apostle_n here_o describe_v they_o still_o continue_v in_o their_o sin_n from_o whence_o it_o appear_v this_o hope_n of_o they_o be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v here_o design_v it_o want_v the_o efficacy_n and_o success_n and_o therefore_o also_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o what_o then_o be_v the_o hope_n which_o our_o apostle_n here_o design_n a_o firm_a expectation_n of_o gain_v that_o happiness_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v consist_v in_o purity_n and_o immortality_n upon_o the_o term_n whereupon_o it_o be_v promise_v and_o by_o the_o assistance_n of_o his_o grace_n which_o he_o will_v not_o deny_v they_o that_o ask_v it_o this_o be_v style_v a_o of_o that_o happiness_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v 2._o it_o must_v be_v a_o expectation_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o term_n whereupon_o it_o be_v promise_v 3._o it_o must_v be_v a_o firm_a and_o not_o a_o waver_a expectation_n 4._o it_o must_v be_v a_o firm_a expectation_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v of_o attain_v to_o it_o by_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o not_o by_o the_o power_n or_o strength_n of_o nature_n this_o be_v the_o nature_n these_o the_o condition_n of_o that_o hope_n that_o purge_v the_o heart_n and_o reform_v the_o life_n and_o consequent_o save_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n no_o other_o kind_n of_o hope_n will_v do_v it_o 1._o it_o must_v be_v a_o expectation_n of_o that_o very_a happiness_n god_n have_v promise_v consist_v in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n in_o perfect_a purity_n and_o immortality_n the_o hope_n of_o a_o carnal_a sensual_a paradise_n will_v never_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v the_o spirit_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_n defile_v and_o stain_v it_o for_o although_o it_o be_v very_o true_a indeed_o that_o a_o man_n may_v possible_o deny_v himself_o one_o sensual_a pleasure_n in_o the_o expectation_n of_o another_o great_a than_o that_o he_o forego_v at_o present_a yet_o be_v it_o a_o thing_n whole_o impossible_a that_o the_o hope_n of_o any_o sensual_a happiness_n shall_v any_o way_n mortify_v sensuality_n he_o that_o make_v any_o sensual_a pleasure_n the_o very_a end_n and_o design_n of_o life_n and_o hope_n for_o this_o as_o for_o his_o happiness_n can_v never_o by_o virtue_n of_o this_o hope_n study_v to_o the_o desire_n of_o that_o enjoyment_n wherein_o a_o man_n have_v place_v his_o happiness_n cease_v to_o urge_v and_o press_v endeavour_n in_o order_n to_o the_o attainment_n of_o it_o suppose_v we_o then_o that_o a_o man_n believe_v that_o true_a happiness_n lie_v in_o the_o purity_n and_o immortality_n that_o god_n have_v promise_v in_o his_o kingdom_n suppose_v he_o believe_v that_o a_o holy_a life_n be_v the_o only_a mean_n to_o attain_v this_o happiness_n suppose_v these_o thing_n fix_v and_o settle_v upon_o his_o heart_n by_o the_o operation_n of_o god_n spirit_n can_v we_o imagine_v but_o that_o the_o hope_n of_o such_o a_o end_n shall_v most_o effectual_o excite_v and_o move_v he_o to_o purify_v himself_o as_o god_n be_v pure_a will_v he_o not_o be_v content_a to_o resist_v his_o sinful_a lust_n and_o appetite_n subdue_v his_o inordinate_a inclination_n in_o consideration_n of_o such_o a_o happiness_n will_v he_o not_o be_v content_a to_o deny_v himself_o all_o the_o unlawful_a joy_n
and_o pleasure_n all_o the_o poor_a and_o mean_a advantage_n that_o any_o sin_n can_v offer_v to_o he_o in_o the_o steadfast_a view_n and_o hope_n of_o it_o will_v he_o think_v any_o loss_n or_o honour_n or_o life_n itself_o rather_o than_o that_o of_o eternal_a glory_n if_o he_o can_v retain_v the_o possession_n of_o one_o without_o plain_a forfeiture_n of_o all_o his_o title_n to_o the_o other_o if_o he_o must_v abandon_v one_o of_o these_o can_v he_o doubt_v whether_o he_o shall_v reject_v and_o that_o under_o full_a and_o clear_a conviction_n wrought_v by_o the_o very_a grace_n of_o mention_v that_o some_o man_n take_v to_o judge_v themselves_o to_o be_v righteous_a person_n to_o be_v in_o grace_n and_o favour_n with_o god_n although_o they_o be_v servant_n to_o corruption_n be_v ground_n at_o all_o for_o any_o to_o think_v themselves_o righteous_a or_o hope_v for_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n who_o be_v not_o true_a and_o faithful_a penitent_n who_o do_v not_o forsake_v their_o vicious_a course_n if_o man_n shall_v promise_v themselves_o pardon_n while_o they_o continue_v in_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v a_o promise_n of_o their_o own_o it_o be_v no_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n menace_v death_n eternal_a to_o the_o impenitent_a and_o disobedient_a and_o if_o man_n shall_v still_o believe_v the_o contrary_a it_o be_v their_o error_n their_o under_o a_o great_a imposture_n a_o imposture_n which_o if_o not_o correct_v will_v rob_v we_o of_o our_o immortal_a soul_n it_o be_v hard_a for_o man_n of_o the_o true_a principle_n to_o subdue_v their_o inordinate_a inclination_n to_o enter_v in_o at_o that_o strait_a gate_n which_o lead_v unto_o eternal_a happiness_n but_o if_o the_o very_a principle_n of_o man_n if_o the_o mind_n itself_o be_v possess_v with_o error_n and_o with_o a_o error_n of_o this_o nature_n which_o promise_v life_n eternal_a to_o they_o while_o they_o indulge_v themselves_o in_o evil_a there_o be_v no_o hope_n no_o expectation_n of_o reformation_n till_o the_o error_n itself_o be_v quite_o remove_v now_o therefore_o if_o thy_o life_n be_v vicious_a if_o stain_v with_o any_o one_o sin_n which_o thou_o indulge_v in_o thyself_o awake_v and_o excite_v and_o examine_v thyself_o and_o see_v what_o it_o be_v that_o give_v encouragement_n to_o that_o indulgence_n and_o if_o thou_o be_v serious_a with_o thyself_o and_o search_v the_o bottom_n of_o thy_o heart_n thou_o will_v find_v it_o be_v one_o of_o these_o two_o thing_n either_o a_o presumpti-of_a thy_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n sometime_o hereafter_o or_o a_o belief_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v save_v although_o thou_o continue_v in_o thy_o sin_n without_o repentance_n and_o amendment_n the_o former_a of_o these_o be_v the_o great_a folly_n the_o great_a impudence_n in_o the_o world_n the_o latter_a the_o most_o destructive_a error_n for_o certain_o there_o be_v no_o such_o folly_n no_o such_o imprudence_n in_o all_o the_o world_n as_o to_o defer_v a_o necessary_a duty_n to_o a_o time_n uncertain_a a_o time_n thou_o may_v never_o live_v to_o see_v or_o if_o thou_o do_v may_v use_v as_o ill_o as_o that_o which_o be_v already_o past_a that_o which_o be_v now_o present_a with_o thou_o and_o then_o to_o believe_v a_o sin_n pardon_v while_o it_o be_v indulge_v be_v such_o a_o error_n as_o do_v not_o only_o open_v a_o the_o glory_n of_o it_o as_o their_o only_a happiness_n have_v deliberate_o choose_v piety_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n to_o christ_n precept_n as_o the_o only_a mean_n of_o arrive_v there_o this_o habit_n of_o mind_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n soon_o recover_v itself_o again_o recollect_n itself_o find_v its_o mistake_n rescue_v itself_o from_o the_o surprise_n and_o return_n to_o god_n and_o itself_o again_o just_a as_o the_o needle_n to_o the_o pole_n and_o fix_v where_o it_o be_v fix_v before_o and_o prefer_v the_o reward_n of_o future_a glory_n beyond_o whatsoever_o this_o present_a world_n can_v bring_v into_o competition_n with_o it_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o a_o man_n have_v choose_v the_o perish_a vanity_n of_o this_o world_n as_o thing_n wherein_o he_o hope_v for_o happiness_n he_o will_v pursue_v and_o prefer_v these_o whensoever_o a_o competition_n happen_v between_o this_o world_n and_o that_o to_o come_v perhaps_o his_o conscience_n may_v smite_v he_o for_o it_o perhaps_o his_o reason_n may_v for_o a_o while_o make_v some_o resistance_n and_o opposition_n he_o may_v possible_o find_v some_o reluctancy_n within_o himself_o and_o waver_v and_o fluctuate_v for_o sometime_o between_o some_o contrary_a hope_n and_o fear_n hope_n of_o the_o end_n which_o he_o have_v propound_v and_o fear_v of_o loss_n in_o another_o state_n but_o if_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v design_v be_v that_o wherein_o he_o place_v happiness_n his_o hope_n will_v at_o length_n baffle_v his_o fear_n either_o remove_v the_o consideration_n and_o exclude_v the_o thought_n of_o another_o world_n or_o else_o shake_v the_o belief_n of_o it_o or_o teach_v he_o some_o deceitful_a art_n of_o reconcile_a the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n with_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o his_o lust_n for_o what_o man_n love_v and_o value_v most_o that_o will_v have_v the_o command_n of_o they_o in_o every_o contest_v and_o competition_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o our_o lord_n take_v such_o care_n to_o give_v we_o a_o true_a account_n of_o thing_n to_o state_n their_o real_a value_n to_o we_o to_o put_v we_o in_o mind_n how_o much_o the_o joy_n and_o treasure_n of_o heaven_n transcend_v the_o treasure_n that_o be_v on_o earth_n see_v moth_n and_o rust_n consume_v the_o latter_a and_o that_o thief_n may_v rob_v and_o spoil_v we_o of_o they_o while_o the_o former_a be_v not_o only_o durable_a not_o only_o eternal_a in_o themselves_o but_o beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o theft_n and_o rapine_n thus_o do_v our_o lord_n adjust_a and_o rate_v the_o worth_n of_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v learn_v to_o choose_v aright_o to_o esteem_v that_o most_o which_o best_o deserve_v to_o be_v so_o esteem_v to_o judge_v that_o best_a which_o be_v the_o best_a for_o have_v judge_v it_o so_o to_o be_v we_o shall_v fix_v our_o heart_n and_o desire_n upon_o it_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o the_o gain_n of_o it_o and_o that_o in_o such_o degree_n and_o manner_n that_o when_o ever_o a_o competition_n happen_v between_o this_o end_n and_o any_o other_o this_o will_v not_o fail_v to_o be_v prefer_v in_o all_o our_o deliberate_a thought_n and_o action_n 2._o have_v thus_o show_v in_o what_o manner_n and_o what_o degree_n man_n set_v their_o heart_n upon_o their_o treasure_n upon_o that_o which_o they_o make_v their_o chief_a good_a i_o shall_v now_o draw_v some_o such_o conclusion_n from_o the_o word_n as_o deserve_v our_o especial_a consideration_n 1._o and_o first_o of_o all_o if_o the_o heart_n will_v be_v where_o the_o treasure_n be_v we_o may_v conclude_v man_n treasure_n be_v there_o wherever_o it_o be_v that_o we_o find_v their_o heart_n for_o these_o be_v inseparable_a each_o from_o other_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v that_o man_n prefer_v in_o all_o their_o deliberate_a thought_n and_o counsel_n and_o so_o pursue_v in_o all_o their_o action_n that_o they_o will_v rather_o lose_v or_o hazard_v all_o other_o thing_n than_o miss_v of_o it_o that_o most_o undoubted_o be_v their_o treasure_n if_o a_o man_n will_v defraud_v or_o oppress_v his_o neighbour_n for_o the_o heap_v up_o of_o wealth_n and_o riches_n this_o man_n have_v mammon_n his_o god_n and_o from_o this_o idol_n expect_v felicity_n if_o he_o will_v violate_v truth_n and_o justice_n reproach_n or_o flatter_v or_o dissemble_v to_o advance_v himself_o to_o power_n and_o honour_n these_o be_v the_o thing_n he_o make_v his_o happiness_n and_o as_o for_o those_o that_o indulge_v their_o sensual_a inclination_n in_o contradiction_n to_o christ_n precept_n and_o the_o just_a hope_n of_o a_o better_a life_n they_o describe_v themselves_o in_o the_o 2_o chapter_n of_o the_o book_n of_o wisdom_n v._o 5_o 6._o etc._n etc._n our_o time_n say_v they_o be_v a_o very_a shadow_n that_o pass_v away_o and_o after_o our_o end_n there_o be_v no_o return_v for_o it_o be_v fast_o seal_v so_o that_o no_o man_n come_v again_o come_v on_o therefore_o let_v we_o enjoy_v the_o good_a thing_n that_o be_v present_a and_o let_v we_o speedy_o use_v the_o creature_n like_v as_o in_o youth_n let_v we_o we_o fill_v ourselves_o with_o costly_a wine_n and_o ointment_n and_o let_v no_o flower_n of_o the_o
