lose_v his_o taste_n in_o god_n ordinance_n by_o it_o and_o the_o joy_n of_o god_n salvation_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o 51._o psal_n and_o the_o three_o thing_n i_o will_v add_v be_v this_o that_o so_o be_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n upon_o the_o resurrection_n of_o grace_n after_o such_o a_o fall_n many_o grow_v more_o after_o sickness_n for_o god_n end_n be_v but_o to_o discover_v his_o weakness_n and_o what_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o to_o rouse_v he_o out_o of_o his_o security_n he_o than_o love_v to_o manifest_v his_o power_n when_o once_o we_o have_v see_v our_o weakness_n and_o so_o make_v his_o strength_n perfect_a in_o our_o infirmity_n when_o they_o be_v not_o ordinary_a but_o beyond_o the_o ordinary_a temper_n and_o disposition_n of_o our_o spirit_n but_o then_o the_o question_n may_v be_v concern_v the_o more_o ordinary_a passage_n of_o a_o man_n life_n life_n whether_o a_o man_n may_v measure_v and_o take_v a_o sure_a estimate_n of_o the_o inward_a root_n of_o corruption_n leave_v in_o he_o by_o the_o ordinary_a rise_n and_o stir_n of_o it_o and_o his_o fall_n into_o sin_n more_o or_o less_o i_o speak_v not_o now_o of_o extraordinary_a fit_n but_o of_o ordinary_a qualm_n and_o weakness_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v resolve_v that_o ordinary_o man_n may_v conclude_v from_o the_o more_o or_o less_o busy_a they_o find_v corruption_n to_o be_v in_o they_o ordinary_o according_a to_o what_o activeness_n a_o man_n find_v of_o grace_n or_o sin_n in_o he_o according_a to_o what_o activeness_n a_o man_n find_v of_o grace_n or_o sin_n in_o he_o according_a be_v the_o inward_a principle_n of_o either_o of_o they_o more_o or_o less_o in_o he_o for_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v a_o active_a thing_n so_o be_v leave_v to_o its_o ordinary_a bowl_n when_o the_o force_n of_o the_o hand_n that_o throw_v it_o begin_v to_o decay_v it_o be_v sway_v by_o the_o bias_n and_o lead_v that_o be_v in_o it_o and_o so_o the_o less_o grace_n the_o less_o ordinary_o it_o act_v gracious_o and_o the_o weakly_o and_o then_o also_o the_o opposite_a corruption_n must_v needs_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o active_a for_o the_o soul_n be_v active_a abate_v not_o of_o its_o mettle_n but_o it_o will_v still_o show_v itself_o one_o way_n or_o other_o the_o flesh_n will_v lust_n against_o the_o spirit_n so_o much_o the_o strongly_a as_o the_o spirit_n be_v weak_a for_o they_o be_v contrary_a yea_o and_o thus_o god_n judge_v of_o the_o principle_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o according_a as_o they_o act_n in_o we_o he_o will_v judge_v of_o our_o mortification_n by_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o in_o our_o life_n and_o heart_n the_o more_o the_o fruit_n of_o sin_n grow_v on_o in_o

habit_n and_o be_v more_o remote_a as_o string_n may_v be_v good_a yet_o out_o of_o tune_n and_o so_o not_o play_v upon_o again_o four_a god_n may_v leave_v a_o christian_a of_o more_o grace_n and_o growth_n to_o more_o stir_v of_o corruption_n in_o case_n he_o mean_v yet_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o a_o high_a pitch_n of_o humiliation_n and_o that_o by_o sin_n it_o be_v in_o this_o his_o deal_n of_o leave_v man_n to_o corruption_n and_o the_o vigorous_a conflict_n with_o they_o as_o it_o be_v in_o his_o leave_v his_o people_n sometime_o to_o those_o other_o evil_n of_o affliction_n god_n humble_v he_o either_o by_o affliction_n or_o by_o sin_n and_o his_o manner_n in_o both_o be_v sometime_o alike_o you_o shall_v see_v one_o who_o have_v attain_v to_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n already_o and_o that_o by_o affliction_n and_o yet_o never_o to_o be_v out_o of_o the_o fire_n but_o god_n still_o follow_v he_o with_o one_o affliction_n or_o another_o whereas_o one_o of_o less_o growth_n and_o grace_n who_o in_o that_o regard_n have_v more_o need_n shall_v have_v few_o affliction_n in_o his_o course_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o difference_n it_o be_v not_o that_o the_o grow_v christian_a have_v simple_o more_o need_n of_o affliction_n than_o the_o other_o but_o because_o god_n intend_v to_o bring_v he_o on_o yet_o to_o a_o further_a degree_n of_o grace_n as_o refiner_n of_o sugar_n take_v sugar_n out_o of_o the_o same_o chest_n some_o thereof_o they_o melt_v but_o once_o and_o another_o part_n of_o it_o they_o melt_v and_o refine_v again_o and_o again_o not_o that_o that_o which_o they_o refine_v twice_o have_v more_o dross_n in_o it_o but_o because_o they_o will_v have_v it_o more_o refine_a double_a refine_a and_o as_o god_n deal_v thus_o in_o affliction_n so_o also_o in_o leave_v of_o his_o people_n to_o the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n which_o of_o all_o affliction_n be_v the_o great_a to_o humble_v a_o holy_a heart_n and_o and_o whereas_o god_n humble_v some_o man_n by_o affliction_n he_o humble_v other_o by_o sin_n and_o nothing_o humble_v more_o than_o sin_n for_o cross_n do_v but_o humble_a by_o reveal_v sin_n as_o the_o cause_n and_o nothing_o will_v humble_v a_o grow_v christian_n more_o than_o to_o see_v such_o shameful_a foul_a corruption_n still_o stir_v in_o he_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o which_o to_o he_o will_v be_v in_o this_o that_o after_o so_o long_a a_o time_n such_o lust_n shall_v be_v so_o lively_a in_o he_o to_o have_v such_o gross_a fault_n in_o his_o exercise_n after_o he_o have_v be_v so_o long_o at_o school_n this_o shame_v he_o for_o a_o grow_v christian_n to_o be_v disguise_v with_o a_o corruption_n and_o when_o his_o hair_n be_v grow_v to_o have_v it_o shave_v off_o as_o david_n messenger_n be_v ashamed_a of_o it_o so_o how_o do_v it_o shame_v he_o and_o humble_v he_o thus_o hezekiah_n though_o he_o be_v much_o humble_v by_o a_o sickness_n to_o death_n but_o because_o he_o be_v not_o humble_v enough_o and_o so_o far_o as_o god_n mean_v to_o bring_v he_o therefore_o god_n let_v loose_a pride_n on_o he_o and_o then_o he_o further_o humble_v himself_o and_o all_o israel_n as_o it_o be_v 2_o chron._n 32._o 26._o upon_o some_o man_n god_n show_v his_o free_a grace_n in_o keep_v they_o from_o sin_n upon_o other_o he_o spend_v it_o in_o pardon_v they_o these_o be_v but_o two_o several_a way_n he_o have_v of_o lay_v it_o out_o and_o so_o sometime_o he_o show_v his_o grace_n in_o keep_v those_o of_o less_o grace_n and_o again_o in_o let_v those_o of_o more_o to_o struggle_v with_o their_o lust_n and_o such_o sickness_n be_v not_o to_o death_n or_o to_o weaken_v they_o but_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o their_o further_a growth_n for_o this_o will_v be_v the_o effect_n and_o consequent_a of_o such_o stir_n in_o grow_a christian_n that_o as_o their_o fit_n of_o corruption_n stir_v be_v great_a so_o their_o humbling_n will_v be_v great_a grace_n be_v much_o in_o they_o will_v show_v itself_o that_o way_n great_a fit_n of_o sin_v have_v intermingle_v with_o they_o great_a exercise_n of_o repenting_n and_o the_o growth_n of_o their_o grace_n will_v show_v itself_o in_o they_o and_o appear_v in_o they_o even_o as_o in_o man_n that_o be_v cheerful_a natural_o but_o sometime_o oppress_v with_o melancholy_a when_o those_o pressure_n be_v over_o they_o be_v most_o merry_a their_o spirit_n break_v forth_o be_v at_o liberty_n they_o show_v themselves_o as_o much_o on_o the_o contrary_a in_o mirth_n so_o be_v it_o here_o when_o grace_n get_v above_o again_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n when_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o weak_a but_o only_o be_v keep_v under_o by_o humour_n when_o they_o do_v once_o get_v up_o they_o then_o show_v their_o strength_n in_o cause_v the_o body_n to_o grow_v the_o more_o as_o in_o many_o young_a man_n after_o a_o sickness_n where_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v and_o so_o thereby_o they_o become_v after_o often_o the_o better_a and_o more_o lively_a but_o if_o the_o natural_a spirit_n be_v weak_a it_o be_v not_o so_o a_o second_o limitation_n be_v limitation_n that_o though_o one_o of_o less_o growth_n in_o mortification_n may_v sometime_o by_o watchfulness_n keep_v under_o his_o lust_n more_o and_o act_v that_o little_a grace_n he_o have_v more_o than_o haply_o he_o do_v who_o his_o lust_n rise_v often_o and_o that_o with_o delight_n and_o be_v apt_a to_o catch_v fire_n present_o although_o they_o be_v smother_v as_o fast_o as_o they_o catch_v his_o case_n then_o be_v as_o if_o there_o be_v a_o heap_n of_o straw_n in_o a_o room_n where_o fire_n be_v where_o spark_n fly_v about_o still_o take_v fire_n upon_o every_o occasion_n but_o he_o that_o keep_v the_o straw_n be_v careful_a still_o to_o put_v it_o out_o and_o second_o in_o this_o case_n they_o shall_v find_v the_o strength_n of_o their_o corruption_n in_o privative_a work_n against_o grace_n and_o distract_n and_o disturb_v they_o dead_v their_o heart_n in_o duty_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o apostle_n have_v exhort_v such_o to_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n so_o as_o not_o to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n some_o then_o other_o appear_v hence_o for_o what_o be_v it_o make_v the_o differ_a gift_n that_o be_v in_o christian_n but_o a_o several_a constitution_n of_o grace_n though_o all_o have_v every_o it_o and_o fit_a for_o many_o office_n the_o foot_n be_v not_o so_o so_o in_o christian_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o several_a constitution_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o temper_n of_o they_o more_o or_o less_o have_v they_o several_a office_n in_o the_o church_n and_o be_v fit_v for_o several_a employment_n some_o have_v more_o love_n and_o fit_a for_o office_n of_o charity_n some_o more_o knowledge_n and_o be_v fit_a to_o instruct_v some_o more_o patience_n and_o be_v fit_a to_o suffer_v some_o for_o self-denial_n and_o according_o do_v grow_v in_o these_o more_o special_o the_o three_o question_n be_v quest_n whether_o this_o increase_n be_v only_o by_o radicate_v the_o same_o grace_n more_o or_o by_o a_o new_a addition_n i_o answer_v answ_n that_o by_o add_v a_o new_a herein_o by_o your_o strength_n to_o resist_v hence_o the_o apostle_n pray_v they_o may_v have_v strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n eph._n 3._o and_o in_o chap._n 6._o 13._o he_o speak_v of_o ability_n to_o stand_v in_o the_o evil_a day_n although_o this_o let_v i_o add_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v keep_v up_o his_o heart_n in_o this_o continual_a keennesse_n and_o edge_n of_o spirit_n against_o sin_n and_o whet_v his_o heart_n against_o it_o for_o that_o will_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o use_v his_o strength_n the_o more_o against_o it_o and_o to_o put_v it_o forth_o a_o man_n that_o keep_v his_o heart_n in_o a_o revengeful_a vex_v spleenful_a spirit_n against_o sin_n he_o will_v easy_o cut_v through_o a_o temptation_n and_o though_o if_o a_o christian_a want_n metal_n though_o he_o have_v a_o edge_n he_o may_v be_v foil_v yet_o when_o edge_n and_o metal_n both_o meet_v a_o man_n walk_v above_o his_o lust_n if_o either_o be_v want_v a_o man_n may_v be_v foil_v the_o trial_n of_o a_o christian_n growth_n the_o three_o part_n resolve_v some_o question_n concern_v growth_n in_o mortification_n vivification_n chap._n i._n two_o question_n resolve_v concern_v growth_n in_o mortification_n i_o will_v now_o conclude_v this_o discourse_n about_o growth_n in_o grace_n with_o answer_v some_o question_n which_o may_v be_v make_v concern_v this_o our_o growth_n both_o about_o mortification_n and_o about_o increase_n in_o positive_a grace_n which_o i_o do_v reserve_v to_o this_o last_o place_n that_o i_o may_v handle_v they_o together_o the_o first_o question_n concern_v the_o purge_n out_o of_o sin_n 1._o be_v whether_o every_o new_a degree_n of_o mortification_n and_o purge_v out_o of_o sin_n be_v always_o universal_a extend_v itself_o to_o every_o sin_n so_o as_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o that_o god_n go_v on_o to_o purge_v shall_v be_v not_o only_o that_o he_o go_v on_o first_o to_o purge_v forth_o one_o sin_n than_o another_o but_o that_o he_o go_v on_o to_o purge_v out_o by_o every_o new_a degree_n of_o mortification_n every_o sin_n together_o so_o as_o when_o any_o one_o sin_n be_v more_o weaken_a all_o the_o rest_n in_o a_o proportion_n grow_v weak_a also_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v affirmative_o answ_n that_o every_o new_a degree_n of_o mortification_n be_v universal_a first_o because_o when_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o our_o growth_n therein_o he_o speak_v of_o it_o as_o extend_v itself_o to_o every_o sin_n so_o ephes_n 4._o 22._o when_o he_o exhort_v the_o ephesian_n who_o be_v mortify_v already_o to_o a_o far_a progress_n in_o it_o he_o exhort_v they_o to_o put_v off_o the_o old_a man_n which_o be_v corrupt_a according_a to_o the_o deceitful_a lust_n it_o be_v not_o one_o lust_n that_o be_v the_o object_n of_o mortification_n and_o the_o growth_n of_o it_o although_o he_o mention_n particular_a lust_n afterward_o but_o the_o whole_a man_n that_o be_v corrupt_a and_o all_o its_o lust_n and_o this_o he_o there_o speak_v of_o daily_a growth_n therein_o for_o
of_o that_o he_o have_v speak_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n from_o the_o 12._o verse_n and_o go_v on_o to_o speak_v of_o it_o and_o exhort_v to_o it_o thus_o in_o like_a manner_n gal._n 5._o 24._o it_o be_v call_v crucify_a the_o flesh_n with_o the_o lust_n not_o one_o lust_n but_o the_o flesh_n the_o whole_a bundle_n the_o cluster_n of_o they_o all_o and_o in_o that_o it_o be_v call_v crucify_a it_o imply_v it_o also_o for_o of_o all_o death_n that_o do_v work_v upon_o every_o part_n it_o do_v stretch_v every_o nerve_n sinew_n and_o veyn_a and_o put_v all_o the_o part_n to_o pain_n and_o this_o go_v on_o to_o mortify_v sin_n be_v call_v rom._n 6._o the_o destroy_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n it_o be_v not_o the_o consumption_n of_o one_o member_n of_o the_o lung_n or_o liver_n etc._n etc._n but_o it_o be_v be_v consumptio_fw-la totius_fw-la a_o consumption_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o sin_n so_o as_o every_o new_a degree_n of_o mortification_n be_v the_o consume_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o therefore_o also_o colos_n 3._o where_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o exhort_v to_o his_o growth_n therein_o he_o exhort_v to_o mortify_v earthly_a member_n every_o member_n and_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v because_o first_o true_a mortification_n strike_v at_o the_o root_n and_o so_o cause_v every_o branch_n to_o wither_v for_o all_o sinful_a disposition_n be_v root_v in_o one_o namely_o in_o love_n of_o pleasure_n more_o than_o of_o god_n and_o all_o true_a imortification_n dead_v a_o man_n to_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n by_o bring_v the_o heart_n more_o into_o communion_n and_o into_o love_n with_o god_n and_o therefore_o the_o dead_n to_o any_o sin_n must_v needs_o be_v general_a and_o universal_a to_o every_o sin_n it_o be_v as_o the_o die_a of_o the_o heart_n which_o cause_v all_o the_o member_n to_o die_v with_o it_o for_o that_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o restrain_v grace_n which_o cut_v off_o but_o branch_n and_o so_o lop_v the_o tree_n but_o true_a mortification_n strike_v every_o blow_n at_o the_o root_n second_o every_o new_a degree_n of_o true_a mortification_n purge_v out_o a_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v sin_n and_o work_n against_o it_o under_o that_o consideration_n and_o if_o against_o it_o as_o sin_n than_o the_o same_o power_n that_o work_v out_o any_o sin_n work_v against_o every_o sin_n in_o the_o heart_n also_o now_o that_o every_o new_a degree_n work_v against_o a_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v sin_n be_v plain_a by_o this_o because_o if_o it_o be_v purge_v out_o upon_o any_o other_o respect_n it_o be_v not_o mortification_n three_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o virtue_n that_o come_v from_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o this_o purge_n out_o a_o sin_n do_v also_o work_v against_o every_o sin_n when_o they_o work_v against_o any_o one_o and_o they_o have_v a_o contrariety_n to_o every_o lust_n they_o search_v into_o every_o vein_n and_o draw_v from_o all_o part_n physician_n may_v give_v elective_a purge_n as_o they_o call_v they_o which_o will_v purge_v out_o one_o humour_n and_o not_o another_o but_o christ_n physic_n work_v general_o it_o take_v away_o all_o sort_n of_o distemper_n and_o whereas_o the_o objection_n against_o this_o may_v be_v object_n that_o then_o all_o lust_n will_v come_v to_o be_v equal_o mortify_v i_o answer_v answ_n no_o for_o all_o lust_n be_v never_o equal_o alive_a in_o a_o man_n some_o be_v strong_a some_o weak_a by_o custom_n through_o disposition_n of_o body_n and_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o though_o mortification_n extend_v itself_o to_o all_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o inequality_n in_o the_o life_n and_o growth_n of_o these_o sin_n in_o we_o hence_o some_o remain_n still_o more_o some_o less_o mortify_v as_o when_o a_o flood_n of_o water_n be_v leave_v to_o flow_v into_o a_o field_n where_o many_o hill_n be_v of_o differ_v height_n though_o the_o water_n overflow_v all_o equal_o yet_o some_o be_v more_o above_o water_n than_o other_o because_o they_o be_v high_o before_o of_o themselves_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o some_o sin_n when_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n come_v may_v be_v in_o a_o manner_n whole_o subdue_v namely_o those_o which_o proceed_v out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o naughtiness_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o swear_v malice_n against_o the_o truth_n and_o these_o the_o child_n of_o off_o as_o be_v the_o manner_n to_o a_o proselyte_n woman_n the_o power_n of_o grace_n take_v they_o away_o though_o other_o member_n continue_v vigorous_a and_o therefore_o of_o swear_v christ_n and_o the_o promise_n with_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o mortification_n of_o some_o one_o particular_a lust_n or_o other_o and_o do_v use_v those_o right_a mean_n as_o prayer_n fast_v etc._n etc._n for_o the_o special_a mortification_n of_o some_o one_o lust_n whether_o that_o lust_n thereby_o do_v not_o become_v more_o mortify_v than_o other_o lust_n do_v i_o answer_v answ_n yes_o yet_o so_o as_o in_o a_o proportion_n this_o work_n of_o mortification_n it_o run_v through_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o as_o in_o wash_v out_o the_o great_a stain_n of_o a_o cloth_n the_o lesser_a stain_n be_v wash_v out_o also_o with_o the_o same_o labour_n so_o it_o be_v here_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n in_o all_o his_o exhortation_n to_o mortification_n both_o eph._n 4._o and_o gal._n 5._o and_o col._n 3._o though_o he_o exhort_v to_o the_o put_v off_o the_o old_a man_n the_o whole_a body_n of_o sin_n yet_o instance_n in_o particular_a sin_n because_o a_o man_n be_v particular_o to_o endeavour_v the_o mortification_n of_o particular_n as_o it_o be_v apart_o and_o yet_o because_o in_o get_v they_o mortify_v the_o whole_a body_n of_o sin_n be_v destroy_v therefore_o he_o mention_n both_o the_o whole_a body_n and_o particular_a member_n thereof_o apart_o as_o the_o object_n of_o mortification_n and_o to_o that_o end_n also_o do_v god_n exercise_v his_o child_n first_o with_o one_o lust_n then_o with_o another_o that_o they_o may_v make_v trial_n of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n death_n upon_o every_o one_o and_o therefore_o christ_n bid_v we_o to_o pull_v out_o a_o eye_n to_o every_o sin_n yet_o so_o as_o it_o leave_v a_o present_a great_a disposition_n to_o that_o particular_a sin_n then_o any_o other_o and_o increase_v it_o most_o in_o potentia_fw-la proxima_fw-la though_o all_o the_o rest_n in_o potentia_fw-la remota_fw-la so_o in_o every_o act_n of_o mortification_n though_o the_o common_a stock_n be_v increase_v yet_o the_o particular_a lust_n we_o aim_v at_o have_v a_o great_a share_n in_o the_o mortification_n endeavour_v as_o in_o minister_a physic_n to_o cure_v the_o head_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v often_o purge_v yet_o so_o as_o the_o head_n the_o party_n affect_v be_v yet_o chief_o purge_v and_o more_o than_o the_o rest_n chap._n ii_o three_o question_n resolve_v concern_v positive_a growth_n other_o question_n there_o be_v concern_v
