fearful_a thing_n so_o it_o be_v in_o thy_o heart_n now_o to_o be_v always_o in_o a_o fight_n or_o a_o combat_n it_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n we_o count_v it_o a_o great_a burden_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v war_n and_o rumour_n of_o war_n within_o our_o gate_n i_o but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a war_n in_o thy_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o think_v possible_a ever_o to_o be_v in_o england_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v find_v such_o a_o generation_n that_o shall_v endanger_v their_o life_n to_o make_v they_o and_o their_o posterity_n slave_n and_o yet_o for_o this_o they_o fight_v who_o do_v not_o see_v but_o the_o victory_n will_v be_v this_o in_o the_o conclusion_n but_o i_o will_v show_v you_o a_o worse_a thing_n than_o this_o in_o every_o of_o your_o heart_n there_o be_v such_o corruption_n in_o your_o heart_n as_o put_v your_o soul_n to_o fight_v to_o mischief_n yourselves_o to_o bring_v yourselves_o to_o be_v slave_n to_o the_o devil_n this_o be_v in_o your_o heart_n though_o indeed_o some_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o this_o and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o if_o corruption_n be_v a_o burden_n that_o some_o people_n â—eel_v it_o not_o one_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o they_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n if_o this_o whole_a building_n shall_v fall_v upon_o a_o dead_a man_n he_o will_v not_o feel_v it_o and_o take_v this_o as_o a_o so_o here_o though_o there_o may_v be_v many_o weakness_n in_o man_n and_o woman_n yet_o when_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n at_o all_o certain_o they_o be_v dead_a man_n and_o woman_n now_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v come_v to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v know_v that_o christ_n speak_v to_o you_o not_o burdensome_a 1._o for_o first_o they_o be_v continual_o fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n now_o to_o have_v a_o continual_a fight_v and_o combat_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v it_o not_o very_o burdensome_a as_o a_o family_n where_o there_o be_v a_o continual_a fall_v out_o never_o a_o day_n that_o you_o come_v to_o some_o family_n but_o there_o be_v fall_v out_o and_o fight_v be_v it_o not_o burdensome_a to_o live_v in_o such_o a_o family_n now_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n there_o be_v a_o continual_a fight_n if_o one_o shall_v be_v in_o a_o family_n where_o the_o husband_n and_o wife_n be_v continual_o fight_v one_o with_o a_o other_o and_o the_o child_n and_o servant_n fly_v in_o the_o face_n one_o of_o a_o other_o that_o will_v be_v burdensome_a now_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n there_o be_v the_o flesh_n and_o spirit_n continual_o fight_v one_o against_o another_o be_v not_o war_n in_o a_o kingdom_n a_o burden_n and_o especial_o when_o man_n shall_v fight_v to_o make_v themselves_o slave_n as_o i_o say_v before_o will_v any_o man_n ever_o have_v think_v it_o possible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o folly_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o in_o england_n to_o fight_v to_o make_v themselves_o and_o their_o posterity_n slave_n that_o the_o very_a victory_n that_o they_o shall_v get_v be_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o be_v slave_n now_o the_o fight_n with_o corruption_n it_o be_v for_o this_o end_n 2_o and_o then_o the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n be_v sudden_a many_o time_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v gracious_a and_o godly_a that_o find_v their_o heart_n in_o some_o good_a temper_n and_o work_n for_o god_n sudden_o their_o corruption_n will_v be_v stir_v in_o they_o unexpected_o which_o be_v extreme_a grief_n and_o damp_n to_o their_o spirit_n and_o cause_v many_o time_n exceed_v much_o trouble_n to_o they_o sudden_o that_o no_o body_n can_v understand_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o but_o themselves_o 3._o and_o then_o the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n be_v violent_a the_o stir_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v many_o time_n extreme_a violent_a and_o outrageous_a the_o devil_n stir_v up_o their_o corruption_n and_o indeed_o the_o corruption_n themselves_o be_v as_o it_o be_v devil_n in_o they_o that_o do_v as_o the_o devil_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o be_v cast_v out_o of_o he_o that_o be_v possess_v he_o cause_v he_o to_o foam_v at_o the_o mouth_n so_o there_o be_v extreme_a violence_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a conditition_n of_o the_o poor_a child_n that_o be_v possess_v in_o the_o gospel_n when_o the_o father_n come_v to_o christ_n for_o help_v because_o when_o the_o evil_a spirit_n come_v it_o cast_v he_o into_o the_o fire_n and_o into_o the_o water_n so_o corruption_n be_v so_o violent_a in_o
burden_n to_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o heretofore_o have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n and_o be_v able_a to_o look_v in_o god_n face_n with_o joy_n to_o have_v this_o assurance_n shake_v yea_o many_o time_n it_o make_v god_n withdraw_v his_o countenance_n which_o make_v david_n cry_v out_o restore_v to_o i_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v lord_n i_o be_v wont_a to_o have_v joy_n in_o thy_o company_n in_o communion_n with_o thou_o but_o thou_o have_v estrange_v thyself_o from_o my_o soul_n o_o lord_n restore_v unto_o i_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n now_o be_v not_o this_o a_o burden_n for_o thou_o to_o loose_v the_o sweetness_n of_o thy_o soul_n in_o communion_n with_o god_n that_o now_o though_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v through_o upon_o thy_o spirit_n be_v not_o this_o a_o burden_n now_o then_o be_v there_o any_o poor_a soul_n that_o understand_v what_o these_o thing_n mean_v what_o a_o burden_n the_o remain_a corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v either_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o nature_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o stir_n of_o corruption_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o prevail_a of_o corruption_n that_o now_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n in_o their_o soul_n but_o be_v lade_v with_o such_o a_o burden_n and_o cry_v out_o with_o the_o apostle_n oh_o wretched_a man_n and_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o let_v such_o a_o soul_n know_v that_o this_o text_n belong_v to_o they_o come_v unto_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v from_o this_o burden_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o burden_n and_o our_o rest_n be_v only_o in_o christ_n from_o this_o as_o well_o as_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o other_o burden_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v unto_o chap._n xvi_o why_o the_o saint_n feel_v these_o thing_n so_o burdensome_a namely_o 1._o because_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n be_v a_o tender_a and_o up_o unto_o repentance_n 5._o hereby_o make_v know_v his_o wisdom_n 6._o hereby_o manifest_v his_o justice_n in_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o wicked_a 7._o hereby_o the_o saint_n may_v be_v induce_v to_o long_o more_o after_o heaven_n with_o two_o consequence_n issue_v from_o hence_o 1._o the_o difference_n between_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o wicked_a 2._o why_o the_o saint_n go_v on_o so_o sad_o in_o their_o way_n now_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o a_o gracious_a heart_n must_v feel_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v very_o burdensome_a first_o because_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n wheresoever_o it_o be_v be_v a_o very_a tender_a and_o delicate_a thing_n nothing_o be_v so_o delicate_a and_o tender_a as_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v sensible_a of_o this_o burden_n of_o corruption_n according_a to_o what_o degree_n it_o do_v remain_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o thus_o you_o know_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n the_o more_o delicate_a and_o tender_a they_o be_v in_o their_o flesh_n have_v have_v very_o curious_a bring_v up_o or_o it_o may_v be_v their_o natural_a spirit_n be_v very_o delicate_a more_o than_o other_o man_n some_o man_n their_o natural_a spirit_n be_v more_o gross_a and_o can_v bear_v burden_n with_o less_o sense_n but_o now_o those_o that_o be_v more_o fine_a and_o delicate_a if_o you_o lay_v a_o burden_n upon_o they_o oh_o how_o burdensome_a be_v it_o unto_o they_o now_o grace_n make_v the_o constitution_n to_o be_v delicate_a fine_a and_o pure_a a_o pure_a constitution_n it_o put_v the_o heart_n into_o a_o most_o pure_a constitution_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n according_a to_o the_o remainer_n of_o it_o second_o where_o grace_n be_v corruption_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a in_o this_o regard_n also_o because_o that_o grace_n keep_v the_o soul_n in_o continual_a action_n and_o stir_v now_o look_v as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o leg_n that_o be_v break_v if_o he_o can_v lie_v still_o and_o never_o stir_v it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o grievous_a and_o burdensome_a to_o he_o the_o pain_n and_o break_n of_o his_o leg_n will_v not_o be_v so_o burdensome_a if_o he_o can_v lie_v still_o but_o if_o this_o man_n who_o leg_n be_v break_v must_v be_v stir_v walk_a and_o go_v up_o and_o down_o oh_o how_o burdensome_a be_v it_o that_o his_o leg_n be_v break_v so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a if_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v still_o a_o sleep_n and_o do_v nothing_o then_o though_o there_o be_v corruption_n in_o they_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o grievous_a i_o but_o grace_n wherever_o it_o be_v put_v the_o soul_n unto_o action_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v call_v the_o divine_a nature_n because_o it_o be_v active_a it_o put_v the_o soul_n on_o to_o be_v act_v for_o god_n and_o in_o the_o way_n of_o life_n now_o grace_n put_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v act_v and_o corruption_n that_o be_v as_o the_o break_n of_o the_o bone_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a that_o which_o most_o hinder_v their_o activity_n of_o grace_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a you_o have_v need_v therefore_o take_v heed_n what_o you_o do_v when_o temptation_n to_o sin_n come_v take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o break_v your_o bone_n and_o your_o leg_n why_o because_o when_o you_o have_v break_v they_o you_o must_v be_v still_o stir_v and_o act_v for_o god_n a_o poor_a man_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n worse_o for_o he_o if_o he_o break_v his_o leg_n than_o a_o rich_a man_n a_o rich_a man_n may_v sit_v by_o the_o fire_n or_o lie_v in_o his_o bed_n a_o month_n together_o but_o a_o poor_a man_n if_o he_o break_v his_o leg_n he_o do_v not_o know_v what_o to_o do_v he_o must_v to_o work_n perhaps_o he_o can_v have_v that_o harbour_n that_o a_o rich_a man_n may_v have_v so_o i_o say_v those_o that_o be_v of_o sluggish_a spirit_n though_o corruption_n prevail_v it_o be_v not_o so_o grievous_a unto_o they_o but_o those_o that_o be_v of_o active_a spirit_n and_o have_v grace_n and_o the_o more_o grace_n that_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v the_o more_o burdensome_a their_o corruption_n be_v because_o the_o more_o grace_n there_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o active_a it_o will_v be_v for_o god_n quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v see_v the_o remain_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heurt_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v so_o burdensome_a why_o do_v god_n so_o order_v thing_n in_o his_o providence_n as_o his_o own_o dear_a saint_n shall_v be_v so_o trouble_v with_o their_o corruption_n while_o they_o live_v in_o this_o world_n god_n can_v deliver_v they_o from_o their_o corruption_n why_o will_v god_n make_v they_o cry_v out_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n god_n can_v as_o well_o perfect_a our_o sanctification_n as_o our_o justification_n why_o do_v god_n thus_o order_v thing_n in_o his_o providence_n that_o his_o own_o dear_a saint_n shall_v groan_v under_o such_o a_o burden_n of_o corruption_n all_o their_o day_n answ_n for_o that_o brief_o thus_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o god_n can_v present_o take_v all_o our_o corruption_n as_o soon_o as_o ever_o we_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n god_n can_v deliver_v we_o from_o our_o corruption_n but_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o he_o have_v many_o holy_a end_n why_o he_o do_v suffer_v his_o own_o people_n to_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n while_o they_o live_v here_o in_o the_o flesh_n as._n first_o that_o hereby_o he_o may_v show_v forth_o his_o own_o power_n the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v exceed_v magnify_v in_o this_o that_o it_o can_v uphold_v little_a spark_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o ocean_n of_o corruption_n that_o it_o can_v uphold_v poor_a weak_a creature_n under_o such_o burden_n and_o carry_v they_o on_o notwithstanding_o and_o bring_v they_o to_o eternal_a life_n the_o power_n and_o grace_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v as_o much_o manifest_v in_o this_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v in_o keep_v heaven_n
they_o but_o they_o have_v art_n to_o make_v their_o tankard_n light_a as_o can_v be_v but_o now_o if_o they_o carry_v their_o water_n in_o tankard_n of_o lead_n though_o the_o water_n be_v no_o heavy_a yet_o this_o will_v make_v it_o more_o burdensome_a so_o sickness_n poverty_n loss_n of_o estate_n they_o be_v burdensome_a to_o all_o that_o bear_v they_o but_o yet_o the_o corruption_n of_o sin_n when_o the_o heart_n be_v corrupt_v with_o sin_n that_o be_v as_o lead_v that_o make_v it_o the_o great_a burden_n and_o therefore_o sin_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o make_v all_o other_o thing_n burdensome_a that_o be_v burdensome_a though_o a_o man_n shall_v loose_v all_o his_o estate_n in_o one_o night_n this_o may_v be_v some_o burden_n but_o he_o that_o have_v sin_n those_o that_o be_v passionate_a though_o they_o have_v godliness_n lie_v at_o the_o bottom_n yet_o how_o burdensome_a be_v they_o to_o those_o that_o converse_v with_o they_o other_o they_o have_v extreme_a stout_a and_o stubborn_a spirit_n other_o have_v sullen_a heart_n extreme_a sullen_a spirit_n other_o have_v slight_a and_o vain_a spirit_n other_o proud_a and_o envious_a spirit_n and_o other_o covetous_a now_o there_o be_v reason_n they_o shall_v feel_v the_o burden_n themselves_o for_o other_o feel_v the_o burden_n when_o it_o break_v forth_o from_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o much_o more_o aggravate_v their_o burden_n those_o that_o be_v true_o godly_a that_o be_v overcome_v with_o passion_n when_o they_o think_v thus_o oh_o what_o a_o wretched_a heart_n have_v i_o that_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o do_v to_o live_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o all_o that_o come_v near_o they_o shall_v bless_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o come_v near_o or_o have_v converse_v with_o they_o the_o seven_o property_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n seven_o this_o burden_n be_v such_o a_o burden_n as_o make_v those_o that_o be_v godly_a to_o be_v burdensome_a to_o themselves_o yea_o even_o to_o be_v weary_a of_o their_o life_n many_o time_n why_o for_o their_o corruption_n in_o they_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o grievous_a than_o death_n will_v be_v to_o they_o we_o use_v to_o express_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o we_o and_o say_v it_o be_v death_n to_o we_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a can_v say_v so_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o be_v one_o reason_n that_o paul_n give_v that_o name_n to_o his_o sin_n a_o body_n of_o death_n oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n why_o because_o the_o remain_a corruption_n that_o then_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n be_v as_o death_n to_o he_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o saint_n the_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v death_n to_o they_o and_o they_o can_v appeal_v unto_o god_n and_o speak_v thus_o in_o his_o presence_n the_o bitterness_n of_o death_n will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o to_o i_o a_o thousand_o part_n as_o this_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o my_o heart_n oh_o this_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o my_o heart_n that_o overcome_v i_o after_o so_o many_o resolution_n so_o many_o prayer_n so_o many_o sacrament_n so_o many_o engagement_n it_o be_v that_o which_o make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n as_o rebeccah_n say_v if_o jacob_n shall_v marry_v a_o wife_n of_o the_o daughter_n of_o heth_n it_o will_v make_v her_o weary_a of_o her_o life_n so_o say_v the_o godly_a this_o remain_a corruption_n in_o my_o heart_n make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v that_o carry_v such_o a_o body_n of_o death_n about_o i_o so_o as_o i_o do_v there_o be_v many_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o in_o a_o discontent_a mood_n say_v they_o be_v weary_a of_o their_o life_n but_o this_o be_v in_o a_o discontent_a mood_n but_o when_o can_v you_o say_v so_o in_o respect_n of_o your_o heart_n when_o do_v you_o say_v i_o look_v into_o my_o heart_n and_o i_o see_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sin_n corruption_n worldliness_n pride_n passion_n and_o the_o like_a and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o make_v i_o weary_a of_o my_o life_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o make_v the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o die_v be_v this_o because_o they_o know_v when_o they_o die_v they_o shall_v be_v deliver_v from_o this_o burden_n and_o therefore_o when_o death_n come_v they_o entertain_v it_o willing_o because_o they_o know_v they_o shall_v sin_v against_o god_n no_o more_o there_o be_v many_o of_o you_o when_o you_o have_v live_v a_o long_a time_n in_o sickness_n and_o poverty_n and_o be_v in_o great_a strait_n many_o way_n you_o think_v if_o death_n shall_v come_v to_o i_o i_o can_v be_v willing_a to_o die_v because_o than_o i_o shall_v suffer_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o now_o i_o do_v i_o but_o that_o be_v no_o argument_n of_o grace_n but_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o grace_n that_o because_o of_o the_o great_a burden_n of_o corruption_n that_o and_o earth_n upon_o the_o frame_n or_o keep_v it_o in_o be_v the_o lord_n do_v not_o appear_v more_o to_o be_v a_o almighty_a god_n in_o keep_v heaven_n and_o earth_n in_o be_v than_o he_o do_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o almighty_a god_n in_o keep_v grace_n alive_a in_o the_o heart_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n so_o that_o in_o this_o god_n have_v glory_n in_o another_o way_n than_o he_o have_v from_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n the_o power_n of_o god_n appear_v in_o uphold_v of_o the_o angel_n for_o if_o he_o do_v not_o uphold_v they_o they_o will_v fall_v into_o evil_n as_o adam_n and_o the_o other_o angel_n do_v but_o therein_o appear_v god_n glorious_a power_n to_o uphold_v the_o angel_n but_o the_o glorious_a power_n in_o uphold_v the_o angel_n do_v not_o so_o much_o appear_v as_o the_o glorious_a power_n of_o god_n in_o uphold_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o corruption_n this_o shall_v be_v a_o special_a argument_n that_o the_o saint_n shall_v praise_v god_n for_o to_o all_o eternity_n when_o they_o shall_v look_v back_o and_o see_v what_o a_o condition_n they_o be_v in_o before_o their_o conversion_n yea_o in_o their_o conversion_n that_o though_o god_n grant_v they_o some_o grace_n yet_o what_o abundance_n of_o corruption_n be_v in_o their_o heart_n all_o that_o time_n and_o what_o a_o deal_n of_o stir_n they_o have_v to_o maintain_v that_o little_a grace_n they_o will_v stand_v and_o admire_v to_o consider_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v keep_v alive_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o sin_n that_o a_o little_a spark_n shall_v be_v keep_v alive_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o sea_n not_o only_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o sea_n but_o when_o the_o sea_n be_v tempestuous_a you_o yil_v say_v it_o be_v no_o great_a wonder_n that_o the_o fire_n be_v keep_v burn_v when_o the_o sea_n be_v calm_a but_o when_o all_o be_v in_o a_o storm_n and_o yet_o a_o spark_n of_o fire_n shall_v be_v keep_v alive_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o the_o toss_n of_o the_o wave_n you_o will_v grant_v here_o be_v a_o mighty_a power_n now_o the_o keep_v alive_a of_o grace_n in_o thy_o heart_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o so_o much_o corruption_n do_v argue_v as_o mighty_a a_o power_n in_o god_n 2._o the_o lord_n do_v so_o order_v it_o that_o still_o his_o own_o people_n shall_v be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o much_o coruption_n in_o this_o regard_n because_o that_o hereby_o the_o lord_n draw_v forth_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n in_o his_o son_n in_o which_o his_o soul_n take_v infinite_a delight_n the_o soul_n of_o god_n take_v infinite_a delight_n in_o behold_v the_o work_n of_o the_o glorious_a grace_n of_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n but_o you_o will_v say_v wherein_o do_v it_o appear_v to_o be_v so_o glorious_a in_o regard_n of_o our_o corruption_n thus_o for_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n to_o believe_v in_o god_n that_o he_o will_v be_v eternal_o good_a to_o they_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o for_o a_o poor_a soul_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o his_o corruption_n yet_o to_o be_v able_a to_o triumph_v in_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n notwithstanding_o i_o be_o so_o vild_a filthy_a loathsome_a and_o abominable_a to_o myself_o and_o just_o god_n and_o his_o saint_n may_v count_v i_o a_o burden_n to_o they_o and_o cast_v i_o off_o for_o ever_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o my_o soul_n shall_v cling_v to_o he_o i_o will_v cast_v myself_o upon_o he_o and_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o gracious_a father_n a_o merciful_a god_n a_o god_n that_o love_v i_o a_o god_n that_o rejoice_v in_o do_v good_a to_o i_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o exercise_v faith_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o glorious_a thing_n only_o take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o mistake_v it_o for_o presumption_n object_n you_o will_v say_v for_o man_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o sin_n to_o believe_v in_o god_n mercy_n this_o be_v rather_o presumption_n than_o faith_n answ_n true_o it_o be_v presumpion_n in_o many_o they_o mistake_v themselves_o but_o in_o other_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n and_o god_n delight_v in_o it_o and_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o this_o it_o do_v draw_v the_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n never_o find_v such_o a_o prevalent_a way_n to_o overcome_v those_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o it_o as_o to_o exercise_v their_o faith_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v the_o difference_n between_o presumption_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n presumption_n will_v trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n notwithstanding_o their_o sin_n but_o that_o do_v indeed_o foment_n their_o sin_n and_o make_v they_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n make_v they_o the_o more_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n shall_v by_o the_o true_a geminine_a act_n of_o faith_n rest_n in_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o corruption_n if_o it_o be_v right_a such_o a_o soul_n feel_v no_o mean_n in_o the_o world_n of_o great_a efficacy_n to_o cure_v and_o prevail_v against_o corruption_n then_o this_o to_o trust_v in_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o corruption_n and_o if_o thou_o find_v it_o thus_o thou_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o fear_v trust_v in_o god_n grace_n with_o confidence_n for_o it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v well_o please_v unto_o god_n and_o that_o which_o the_o lord_n delight_v in_o and_o that_o which_o give_v as_o much_o content_n to_o god_n heart_n as_o the_o exercise_n of_o any_o grace_n whatsoever_o and_o in_o that_o regard_n because_o the_o saint_n shall_v never_o exercise_v such_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n in_o heaven_n â—s_v this_o god_n will_v have_v this_o in_o this_o world_n 3._o this_o be_v that_o that_o god_n see_v do_v drive_v his_o own_o people_n to_o he_o in_o prayer_n nothing_o drive_v the_o saint_n to_o god_n with_o more_o earnestness_n in_o prayer_n than_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o weight_n of_o corruption_n upon_o they_o than_o they_o go_v to_o god_n above_o all_o god_n never_o hear_v such_o strong_a cry_n come_v up_o to_o heaven_n in_o regard_n of_o any_o affliction_n as_o this_o and_o by_o the_o way_n you_o may_v find_v by_o this_o how_o your_o heart_n be_v when_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o you_o in_o affliction_n than_o you_o will_v cry_v to_o god_n but_o i_o put_v this_o to_o you_o have_v there_o not_o come_v as_o strong_a cry_n to_o heaven_n upon_o the_o sense_n of_o your_o corruption_n as_o upon_o the_o sense_n of_o any_o affliction_n whatsoever_o 4._o the_o lord_n have_v glory_n in_o this_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o work_n of_o repentance_n and_o humility_n the_o keep_v the_o soul_n of_o his_o people_n in_o humility_n and_o the_o contrition_n of_o their_o spirit_n that_o be_v exceed_o please_a to_o god_n the_o lord_n be_v near_o to_o a_o break_a contrite_a heart_n a_o melt_a mourn_a spirit_n the_o lord_n do_v delight_n in_o the_o evangelical_a work_n of_o repentance_n this_o please_v the_o lord_n the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n mourning_n and_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n be_v a_o grace_n that_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n god_n shall_v have_v none_o of_o that_o in_o heaven_n and_o he_o have_v it_o therefore_o here_o 5._o god_n hereby_o exercise_v his_o wisdom_n exceed_o in_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkeness_n god_n do_v many_o time_n turn_v not_o only_o the_o affliction_n of_o his_o people_n to_o their_o good_a but_o he_o work_v good_a many_o time_n out_o of_o sin_n not_o that_o hereby_o we_o shall_v be_v bold_a and_o presumptuous_a in_o our_o sin_n we_o must_v take_v head_n of_o tempt_a god_n yet_o know_v this_o that_o god_n do_v many_o time_n work_v exceed_v much_o good_a unto_o the_o saint_n even_o out_o of_o their_o sin_n by_o occasion_n of_o sin_n though_o their_o sin_n have_v no_o efficacy_n in_o this_o but_o god_n take_v occasion_n in_o this_o in_o otherways_o of_o his_o providence_n and_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o work_v good_a unto_o they_o 6._o there_o be_v god_n justice_n in_o it_o also_o to_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a man_n for_o when_o they_o shall_v see_v that_o the_o godly_a that_o have_v the_o most_o grace_n they_o have_v much_o corruption_n in_o they_o still_o they_o rejoice_v perhaps_o in_o it_o and_o they_o little_o think_v that_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o be_v of_o all_o thing_n most_o precious_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n next_o to_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n next_o to_o the_o drop_n of_o christ_n blood_n thy_o mourning_n lament_v spirit_n be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o precious_a thing_n in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n god_n treasure_n up_o every_o one_o of_o they_o and_o this_o be_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o soul_n may_v have_v abundance_n of_o rest_n therefore_o in_o christ_n when_o thou_o come_v to_o know_v that_o thy_o mourning_n for_o thy_o offence_n be_v accept_v of_o god_n seven_o the_o ease_n that_o the_o soul_n have_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o whereas_o before_o through_o the_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n sin_n do_v make_v thy_o soul_n a_o object_n of_o god_n wrath_n take_v sin_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o and_o come_v from_o thou_o god_n have_v no_o respect_n in_o christ_n towards_o thou_o sin_n make_v thy_o soul_n a_o object_n of_o god_n wrath_n yea_o and_o of_o hatred_n too_o for_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o plain_o that_o the_o lord_n hate_v the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n now_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n according_a to_o this_o invitation_n come_v to_o i_o you_o that_o be_v lade_v now_o your_o sin_n be_v look_v upon_o in_o christ_n do_v rather_o make_v you_o a_o object_n of_o pity_n and_o compassion_n to_o god_n not_o from_o any_o virtue_n not_o from_o any_o thing_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n but_o in_o regard_n of_o your_o condition_n as_o thus_o let_v a_o tender_a mother_n look_v upon_o the_o child_n that_o be_v wound_n and_o therefore_o do_v pity_v thou_o as_o under_o thy_o affliction_n rather_o than_o under_o thy_o sin_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n and_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n they_o look_v upon_o their_o own_o sin_n as_o their_o affliction_n as_o the_o great_a affliction_n they_o have_v in_o the_o world_n as_o i_o show_v when_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o load_n and_o burden_n of_o corruption_n that_o remain_v in_o their_o heart_n now_o god_n therefore_o look_v up_o on_o thy_o sin_n as_o thy_o affliction_n and_o as_o for_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v thy_o affliction_n as_o it_o be_v the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n or_o the_o like_a christ_n undertake_v for_o that_o and_o so_o thou_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o wrath_n that_o it_o do_v deserve_v and_o those_o evil_a effect_n that_o shall_v come_v of_o it_o through_o the_o revenge_a justice_n of_o god_n christ_n have_v undertake_v it_o but_o yet_o it_o remain_v thy_o affliction_n though_o thou_o be_v deliver_v from_o guiltiness_n and_o condemnation_n yet_o one_o that_o have_v a_o gracious_a heart_n reason_n thus_o though_o i_o be_v deliver_v from_o my_o sin_n from_o the_o gild_n of_o it_o from_o the_o condemn_a power_n that_o the_o law_n have_v through_o my_o sin_n yet_o it_o be_v my_o affliction_n my_o trouble_n and_o so_o i_o look_v upon_o it_o now_o peace_n and_o rest_n be_v to_o that_o soul_n from_o what_o the_o law_n can_v require_v so_o that_o as_o we_o go_v along_o we_o may_v not_o only_o see_v the_o benefit_n we_o have_v by_o christ_n but_o who_o they_o be_v that_o be_v thus_o deliver_v those_o who_o though_o they_o know_v they_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o it_o yet_o they_o do_v account_v their_o sin_n the_o affliction_n of_o their_o soul_n whereas_o other_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o apprehend_v their_o soul_n as_o guilty_a and_o under_o condemnation_n but_o if_o they_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o they_o will_v look_v upon_o their_o sin_n as_o their_o wound_n and_o affliction_n the_o saint_n they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v now_o make_v the_o object_n of_o god_n pity_n and_o compassion_n towards_o they_o and_o hence_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o christ_n be_v willing_a if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o find_v many_o excuse_n that_o may_v be_v make_v for_o his_o poor_a servant_n thou_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o believe_v in_o humiliation_n and_o there_o be_v no_o such_o way_n to_o make_v such_o a_o mixture_n of_o both_o as_o to_o understand_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v natural_o under_o the_o law_n and_o way_n but_o sometime_o they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o life_n omit_v any_o duty_n but_o at_o other_o time_n they_o be_v loose_v again_o for_o it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o beat_n of_o their_o conscience_n they_o do_v not_o work_v according_a to_o the_o new_a nature_n for_o that_o which_o work_v according_a to_o a_o new_a nature_n work_v in_o a_o even_a way_n wherein_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o and_o this_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n of_o trial_n whether_o that_o that_o you_o do_v be_v from_o the_o change_n of_o nature_n or_o from_o other_o principle_n if_o there_o be_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o duty_n and_o another_o you_o be_v not_o very_o forward_o in_o something_o and_o backward_a in_o another_o that_o be_v a_o sign_n it_o be_v do_v from_o a_o new_a nature_n but_o if_o you_o make_v conscience_n of_o some_o thing_n and_o at_o other_o time_n in_o other_o thing_n take_v more_o liberty_n this_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o what_o you_o do_v be_v but_o legal_o do_v and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a as_o it_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o a_o man_n to_o go_v upon_o uneven_a ground_n one_o leg_n up_o and_o another_o down_o so_o for_o a_o man_n to_o perform_v duty_n up_o and_o down_o forward_z and_o backward_o here_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o burden_n in_o that_o way_n whereas_o those_o that_o come_v to_o perform_v duty_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o their_o way_n be_v make_v even_o for_o they_o not_o but_o that_o god_n people_n may_v sometime_o be_v better_a than_o they_o be_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o there_o be_v general_o a_o evenness_n and_o proportion_n between_o their_o action_n the_o six_o misery_n six_o there_o be_v this_o evil_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o if_o so_o be_v that_o by_o these_o duty_n their_o conscience_n come_v to_o be_v quiet_v than_o they_o be_v keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v no_o people_n more_o keep_v of_o from_o jesus_n christ_n than_o those_o that_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o legal_a manner_n and_o have_v quiet_a of_o conscience_n that_o way_n yeâ—_n not_o only_o keep_v from_o christ_n but_o further_o they_o set_v up_o their_o duty_n in_o the_o place_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o to_o be_v their_o very_a justification_n what_o be_v it_o that_o many_o people_n will_v present_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o righteousness_n and_o hope_n of_o heaven_n but_o performance_n of_o such_o and_o such_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n require_v now_o here_o be_v a_o mighty_a mistake_n though_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v god_n law_n yet_o for_o we_o to_o come_v and_o make_v this_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n and_o set_v it_o up_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v our_o interest_n for_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v to_o put_v jesus_n christ_n out_o of_o his_o office_n and_o make_v our_o own_o duty_n to_o be_v our_o savior_n this_o now_o be_v exceed_o dangerous_a and_o yet_o how_o many_o people_n be_v there_o that_o do_v thus_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v the_o large_a in_o this_o point_n because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o argument_n that_o we_o do_v every_o day_n meet_v withal_o and_o also_o because_o i_o will_v have_v many_o who_o conscience_n begin_v to_o be_v enlighten_v and_o much_o trouble_v to_o know_v where_o they_o be_v what_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o where_o the_o bottom_n of_o their_o trouble_n lie_v there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o be_v so_o far_o to_o be_v belove_v that_o they_o be_v very_o conscientious_a of_o duty_n and_o abstain_v from_o those_o sin_n that_o other_o live_v in_o and_o perform_v duty_n that_o other_o neglect_v but_o they_o go_v on_o very_o heavy_o and_o sad_o for_o many_o year_n together_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o know_v not_o the_o ground_n of_o their_o trouble_n from_o whence_o their_o trouble_n come_v now_o by_o that_o that_o i_o have_v open_v to_o you_o in_o this_o point_n you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whence_o all_o your_o trouble_n come_v whence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o you_o have_v go_v on_o in_o that_o sadness_n and_o heaviness_n as_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v do_v your_o duty_n in_o a_o legal_a way_n you_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o way_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v ease_v of_o this_o burden_n when_o i_o come_v to_o that_o there_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o some_o measure_n the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o all_o those_o burden_n that_o i_o have_v open_v christ_n will_v not_o have_v we_o omit_v duty_n every_o a_o whit_n the_o more_o but_o in_o christ_n we_o shall_v see_v how_o they_o be_v perform_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o ease_n than_o before_o not_o more_o easy_a to_o the_o flesh_n but_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o whosoever_o you_o be_v that_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n if_o your_o heart_n tell_v you_o this_o be_v my_o condition_n the_o lord_n know_v it_o be_v my_o condition_n i_o have_v indeed_o make_v conscience_n of_o my_o way_n a_o great_a while_n but_o i_o have_v go_v on_o just_a in_o this_o legal_a way_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o this_o point_n if_o this_o be_v your_o condition_n so_o far_o be_v comfort_n to_o you_o and_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n call_v you_o it_o be_v true_a your_o condition_n be_v for_o the_o present_a sad_a yet_o there_o be_v help_v hope_v and_o remedy_n in_o christ_n come_v to_o he_o and_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o give_v you_o rest_v and_o teach_v you_o to_o honour_n god_n that_o shall_v be_v more_o comfort_n to_o your_o soul_n than_o this_o way_n you_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o safe_a way_n and_o a_o speedy_a way_n for_o comfort_n and_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n too_o therefore_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o call_v to_o you_o to_o make_v less_o conscience_n of_o your_o duty_n than_o you_o do_v no_o but_o it_o be_v as_o holy_a a_o way_n and_o a_o more_o safe_a and_o speedy_a way_n than_o that_o now_o you_o be_v in_o christ_n call_v you_o quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v do_v christ_n call_v to_o these_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o rest_n as_o if_o he_o do_v approve_v of_o their_o condition_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o ought_v to_o be_v that_o people_n ought_v to_o be_v burden_v by_o these_o legal_a performance_n answ_n there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o burden_n here_o that_o it_o be_v true_a aught_o to_o be_v and_o christ_n approve_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n etc._n etc._n and_o christ_n call_v these_o as_o approve_v of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a though_o not_o true_o good_a but_o there_o be_v other_o burden_n that_o be_v upon_o sinner_n that_o christ_n call_v to_o come_v to_o he_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o not_o as_o they_o be_v approve_v of_o by_o christ_n but_o christ_n pity_v they_o and_o have_v compassion_n upon_o those_o that_o be_v under_o those_o burden_n as_o be_v under_o a_o great_a misery_n as_o now_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n when_o christ_n shall_v see_v a_o poor_a soul_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o way_n to_o have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a estate_n upon_o he_o to_o labour_n and_o do_v what_o he_o can_v and_o all_o this_o while_n not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o think_v by_o this_o to_o make_v up_o his_o righteousness_n with_o god_n and_o eternal_a life_n christ_n see_v that_o all_o his_o labour_n will_v come_v to_o nothing_o if_o he_o go_v on_o in_o this_o way_n he_o will_v loose_v all_o his_o duty_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o conscience_n he_o make_v of_o holy_a duty_n he_o will_v perish_v at_o last_o except_o he_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o justify_v sinner_n before_o his_o tribunal_n fear_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o duty_n he_o perform_v except_o he_o come_v to_o understand_v this_o he_o will_v perish_v now_o in_o pity_n and_o tender_a compassion_n to_o such_o a_o soul_n that_o have_v do_v so_o much_o and_o go_v so_o far_o the_o lord_n christ_n do_v
that_o god_n aim_v at_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o just_a judgement_n upon_o they_o thereby_o 7._o god_n do_v it_o for_o this_o reason_n that_o the_o saint_n may_v long_o more_o after_o heaven_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o order_n of_o his_o providence_n work_v so_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v keep_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n in_o this_o world_n that_o they_o may_v long_o to_o be_v in_o heaven_n with_o their_o father_n and_o that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o heaven_n they_o may_v know_v the_o difference_n between_o heaven_n and_o earth_n between_o their_o state_n there_o in_o heaven_n and_o their_o state_n here_o on_o earth_n thus_o though_o corruption_n may_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o we_o while_o we_o live_v here_o in_o this_o world_n yet_o the_o lord_n have_v many_o great_a end_n and_o purpose_n to_o suffer_v thou_o a_o poor_a creature_n to_o be_v under_o remain_v corruption_n and_o therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o draw_v any_o such_o argument_n god_n love_v i_o not_o for_o if_o he_o love_v i_o he_o will_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o corruption_n i_o have_v be_v pray_v a_o longtime_n to_o be_v deliver_v and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o deliver_v do_v not_o gather_v any_o such_o argument_n from_o it_o you_o know_v paul_n pray_v once_o and_o again_o and_o all_o the_o answer_n he_o have_v be_v my_o grace_n shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o so_o though_o thou_o pray_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n again_o and_o again_o yet_o if_o once_o god_n say_v thus_o to_o thy_o soul_n my_o grace_n shall_v be_v will_v say_v we_o be_v better_o we_o do_v not_o feel_v it_o no_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o sin_n as_o thou_o have_v they_o have_v get_v some_o grace_n thou_o have_v none_o they_o have_v in_o some_o degree_n mortify_v their_o sin_n thou_o have_v not_o yea_o they_o have_v their_o sin_n pardon_v thou_o have_v not_o but_o yet_o though_o they_o have_v some_o assurance_n that_o the_o guilt_n of_o their_o sin_n be_v remove_v yet_o the_o very_a remain_v of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n be_v their_o burden_n object_n you_o will_v say_v why_o shall_v it_o be_v so_o burdensome_a and_o together_o with_o thy_o corruption_n all_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o thou_o only_o thou_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o do_v not_o feel_v it_o if_o a_o whole_a building_n fall_v down_o those_o that_o be_v bury_v in_o the_o grave_n they_o will_v not_o feel_v it_o but_o all_o you_o that_o be_v alive_a if_o it_o shall_v fall_v down_o will_v feel_v it_o so_o the_o wicked_a have_v the_o though_o they_o have_v the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n remove_v yet_o the_o very_a lest_o sin_n remain_v in_o they_o be_v a_o burden_n though_o they_o have_v mortify_v their_o sin_n and_o do_v it_o every_o day_n yet_o the_o remain_v of_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o they_o and_o hence_o you_o may_v see_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o watchfulness_n of_o the_o saint_n over_o their_o spirit_n why_o they_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n and_o rise_v so_o early_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n you_o will_v say_v they_o know_v that_o if_o they_o do_v not_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o corruption_n to_o a_o void_a sin_n it_o will_v be_v a_o great_a burden_n to_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n afterward_o now_o you_o do_v not_o watch_v over_o sin_n outward_a affliction_n and_o the_o grievousness_n thereof_o lay_v open_a in_o three_o particular_n 1._o in_o themselves_o they_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n 2._o they_o these_o burden_n though_o we_o do_v not_o feel_v they_o we_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v under_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v very_o seasonable_a to_o show_v the_o that_o be_v his_o very_a soul_n his_o life_n his_o peace_n his_o comfort_n all_o his_o happiness_n he_o have_v commit_v to_o he_o and_o so_o leave_v all_o with_o he_o now_o then_o take_v all_o these_o together_o and_o when_o christ_n call_v the_o sinner_n to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o be_v o_o sinner_n first_o believe_v this_o that_o i_o be_o the_o great_a redeemer_n that_o be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n wrath_n and_o your_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v up_o peace_n between_o god_n and_o you_o and_o let_v there_o be_v a_o unsettle_n of_o your_o heart_n from_o whatsoever_o heretofore_o your_o soul_n do_v rest_n in_o creature_n comfort_n your_o own_o righteousness_n duty_n self_n respect_n and_o end_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v let_v your_o heart_n be_v take_v off_o from_o they_o all_o and_o let_v your_o heart_n now_o be_v in_o a_o stir_a work_a disposition_n towards_o i_o let_v all_o your_o whole_a soul_n be_v stretch_v forth_o to_o i_o and_o come_v and_o cast_v all_o your_o burden_n upon_o i_o and_o leave_v your_o soul_n with_o i_o and_o i_o will_v take_v care_n of_o they_o thus_o come_v to_o i_o now_o then_o when_o any_o soul_n that_o be_v thus_o lade_v shall_v answer_v to_o this_o call_v of_o christ_n and_o shall_v say_v lord_n i_o come_v here_o be_v the_o very_a voice_n and_o answer_v of_o faith_n when_o the_o soul_n can_v say_v oh_o lord_n i_o come_v i_o see_v thou_o to_o be_v the_o bless_a mediator_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n and_o for_o whatsoever_o my_o heart_n have_v settle_v in_o heretofore_o oh_o lord_n it_o shall_v be_v all_o the_o work_n indeed_o within_o but_o we_o can_v see_v it_o till_o it_o be_v lay_v open_a and_o spread_v before_o we_o than_o we_o can_v see_v all_o that_o be_v in_o it_o so_o though_o there_o be_v many_o expression_n in_o the_o scripture_n that_o we_o understand_v not_o yet_o there_o they_o be_v but_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n to_o spread_v they_o and_o to_o lay_v they_o before_o you_o and_o lay_v they_o open_a to_o you_o that_o you_o may_v see_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o another_o manner_n when_o they_o be_v unfold_v now_o thus_o do_v christ_n call_v those_o that_o be_v lade_v to_o come_v to_o he_o chap._n xix_o how_o christ_n call_v sinner_n unto_o he_o set_v forth_o in_o two_o particular_n namely_o 1._o by_o a_o outward_a and_o general_a call_n 2._o by_o a_o particular_a call_n to_o particular_a sinner_n and_o how_o to_o know_v the_o voice_n of_o christ_n you_o will_v say_v how_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n do_v christ_n call_v to_o i_o christ_n be_v in_o heaven_n i_o can_v hear_v christ_n call_v to_o i_o now_o for_o the_o call_v of_o christ_n first_o there_o be_v a_o general_n call_v in_o the_o word_n there_o christ_n call_v under_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o come_v to_o he_o but_o this_o call_n be_v rather_o a_o command_n of_o christ_n then_o a_o invitaion_n to_o show_v unto_o all_o what_o be_v their_o duty_n to_o do_v rather_o than_o to_o invite_v they_o but_o now_o there_o be_v a_o more_o special_a call_v unto_o those_o who_o the_o father_n have_v give_v to_o christ_n and_o though_o they_o make_v use_v of_o the_o general_n call_v in_o the_o word_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o special_a call_n to_o they_o that_o be_v christ_n by_o his_o spirit_n do_v open_v the_o riches_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o the_o grace_n in_o he_o to_o their_o soul_n by_o his_o spirit_n inward_o he_o do_v show_v they_o to_o their_o soul_n other_o come_v and_o hear_v the_o outward_a call_v that_o be_v when_o a_o minister_n of_o god_n shall_v come_v and_o open_v the_o gospel_n and_o there_o show_v how_o god_n have_v give_v his_o son_n to_o we_o he_o have_v take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o die_v for_o sin_n and_o tell_v they_o that_o god_n require_v all_o here_o in_o the_o gospel_n to_o believe_v in_o his_o son_n they_o hear_v his_o outward_a call_v i_o but_o they_o who_o the_o father_n give_v to_o christ_n have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n send_v together_o with_o the_o word_n to_o open_v the_o riches_n of_o christ_n that_o though_o they_o have_v hear_v it_o a_o hundred_o time_n before_o yet_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v there_o be_v a_o show_v of_o the_o beauty_n and_o riches_n of_o the_o gospel_n more_o than_o ever_o that_o allure_v their_o soul_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n second_o not_o only_o this_o but_o the_o lord_n when_o he_o call_v such_o as_o shall_v indeed_o have_v mercy_n by_o christ_n and_o have_v his_o invitation_n to_o be_v effectual_a he_o do_v give_v a_o particular_a call_v unto_o that_o soul_n beside_o the_o general_n call_v god_n do_v not_o only_o in_o the_o word_n call_v sinner_n and_o say_v christ_n come_v to_o save_v sinner_n and_o those_o that_o be_v lose_v but_o christ_n come_v in_o particular_a to_o such_o and_o such_o soul_n and_o call_v they_o in_o a_o particular_a special_a manner_n for_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n they_o be_v bind_v in_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o gospel_n to_o give_v a_o general_a invitation_n to_o come_v to_o he_o but_o god_n beside_o the_o general_n have_v a_o particular_a call_v there_o be_v a_o voice_n of_o god_n in_o particular_a to_o the_o soul_n that_o he_o intend_v to_o bring_v to_o his_o son_n such_o a_o one_o hear_v a_o voice_n behind_o he_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o salvation_n the_o way_n you_o have_v go_v all_o this_o while_n be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o life_n you_o will_v perish_v in_o that_o way_n christ_n be_v the_o right_a way_n as_o thus_o i_o will_v open_v it_o in_o the_o general_a and_o particular_a call_n by_o this_o similitude_n a_o prince_n that_o have_v have_v many_o of_o his_o subject_n traitor_n yet_o he_o be_v please_v to_o send_v forth_o a_o general_a proclamation_n make_v a_o proclamation_n to_o those_o subject_n and_o make_v it_o in_o general_a term_n that_o though_o you_o have_v be_v thus_o and_o thus_o traitorous_a against_o i_o yet_o i_o be_o content_a every_o one_o that_o will_v come_v to_o such_o a_o place_n at_o such_o a_o day_n and_o submit_v himself_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o pardon_n here_o be_v the_o general_a proclamation_n and_o this_o be_v encouragement_n to_o come_v but_o now_o suppose_v there_o be_v some_o poor_a traitor_n that_o because_o sensible_a of_o his_o wickedness_n and_o how_o unreasonable_o he_o have_v deal_v with_o his_o prince_n and_o may_v be_v sit_v alone_o bemoan_v his_o condition_n and_o trouble_v in_o his_o spirit_n and_o think_v with_o himself_o how_o shall_v i_o be_v able_a to_o see_v the_o face_n of_o my_o prince_n oh_o woe_n to_o i_o for_o the_o wickedness_n of_o my_o way_n suppose_v the_o prince_n shall_v come_v by_o and_o behold_v such_o a_o one_o take_v notice_n of_o he_o that_o be_v get_v into_o some_o corner_n or_o other_o and_o be_v there_o smite_v of_o his_o breast_n and_o lament_v his_o condition_n that_o he_o shall_v so_o provoke_v his_o prince_n as_o he_o have_v do_v and_o shall_v call_v this_o poor_a creature_n and_o say_v to_o he_o oh_o thou_o poor_a creature_n that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o place_n come_v thou_o to_o i_o for_o so_o be_v the_o work_n christ_n what_o do_v thou_o think_v that_o mercy_n be_v worth_a that_o cost_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n thou_o think_v thou_o be_v a_o great_a sinner_n and_o that_o it_o must_v be_v wonderful_a mercy_n that_o must_v save_v thy_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a and_o it_o be_v well_o thou_o think_v so_o but_o now_o consider_v further_a sinner_n what_o do_v thou_o think_v of_o the_o mercy_n that_o shall_v be_v as_o much_o worth_n as_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n for_o he_o to_o be_v make_v a_o curse_n for_o sinner_n will_v that_o do_v it_o if_o that_o will_v do_v it_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o he_o how_o much_o do_v thou_o think_v the_o mercy_n of_o christ_n come_v to_o take_v man_n nature_n upon_o he_o be_v worth_a to_o take_v our_o sinful_a nature_n upon_o he_o if_o he_o will_v do_v it_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o christ_n yea_o further_o know_v that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n never_o receive_v any_o that_o come_v to_o he_o but_o beggar_n none_o but_o beggar_n none_o but_o miserable_a creature_n none_o but_o those_o that_o be_v wretched_a that_o be_v vile_a and_o christ_n do_v never_o yet_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n receive_v any_o man_n upon_o these_o term_n because_o he_o be_v not_o so_o vile_a as_o another_o man_n as_o thus_o here_o be_v one_o that_o be_v thus_o vile_a here_o be_v another_o that_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o vile_a i_o will_v receive_v he_o upon_o this_o ground_n because_o he_o be_v not_o so_o vile_a this_o be_v never_o the_o ground_n but_o when_o he_o receive_v they_o he_o receive_v they_o upon_o free_a grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o how_o vile_a thou_o be_v for_o that_o be_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n to_o save_v vile_a creature_n and_o he_o save_v none_o but_o those_o that_o come_v as_o their_o first_o conversion_n have_v their_o heart_n so_o fill_v with_o joy_n because_o at_o their_o first_o come_v to_o christ_n christ_n do_v give_v they_o such_o wonderful_a embracement_n till_o they_o come_v to_o be_v more_o strengthen_v and_o then_o perhaps_o christ_n will_v have_v they_o live_v rather_o by_o faith_n than_o by_o sense_n it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a birth_n as_o in_o the_o birth_n of_o nature_n child_n when_o they_o be_v first_o bear_v they_o shoot_v up_o mighty_o take_v a_o child_n that_o come_v very_o little_a out_o of_o the_o womb_n come_v to_o it_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o year_n after_o the_o child_n be_v shoot_v up_o a_o great_a deal_n you_o may_v see_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n tall_a and_o big_a every_o limb_n increase_v but_o take_v it_o at_o ten_o year_n old_a and_o it_o grow_v not_o so_o much_o then_o as_o at_o the_o first_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o come_v out_o of_o the_o worm_n womb_n it_o can_v not_o subsist_v if_o nature_n do_v not_o hasten_v to_o strengthen_v itself_o at_o first_o so_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n at_o first_o they_o shoot_v up_o and_o grow_v to_o such_o enlargement_n of_o spirit_n and_o they_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v yea_o and_o other_o do_v so_o sensible_o perceive_v a_o great_a growth_n at_o their_o first_o come_v than_o afterward_o because_o when_o they_o first_o come_v christ_n will_v strengthen_v they_o against_o all_o discouragement_n christ_n will_v use_v you_o tender_o christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v you_o for_o your_o former_a sin_n and_o say_v what!_o you_o that_o have_v live_v a_o profane_a life_n a_o profaner_n of_o my_o ordinance_n a_o scorner_n at_o my_o way_n and_o at_o my_o people_n christ_n will_v not_o upbraid_v the_o soul_n but_o he_o will_v be_v render_v of_o you_o he_o will_v pass_v by_o your_o sin_n and_o heal_v your_o weakness_n he_o will_v not_o break_v the_o bruise_a reed_n nor_o quench_v the_o smoke_a flax._n arg._n viii_o eight_o further_n consider_v the_o infinite_a need_n thy_o soul_n have_v of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o that_o shall_v drive_v thou_o to_o he_o if_o the_o other_o argument_n do_v not_o draw_v thou_o duty_n my_o prayer_n my_o service_n be_v all_o cast_v away_o till_o i_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n certain_o this_o be_v so_o for_o thou_o must_v know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o only_o the_o great_a conveyer_n of_o all_o good_a from_o god_n to_o we_o but_o also_o all_o that_o come_v to_o we_o from_o god_n must_v go_v through_o he_o and_o therefore_o there_o be_v cause_n thou_o shall_v hasten_v to_o christ_n and_o never_o be_v at_o quiet_a all_o thy_o life_n till_o thou_o have_v some_o comfortable_a evidence_n that_o thy_o heart_n have_v close_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v a_o infinite_a necessity_n because_o all_o ordinance_n duty_n service_n whatever_o thou_o do_v do_v thou_o no_o good_a till_o thou_o come_v to_o christ_n arg._n ix_o nine_o yea_o further_o christ_n be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o all_o the_o creature_n one_o day_n will_v see_v a_o need_n of_o he_o yea_o all_o that_o live_v under_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o shall_v see_v a_o need_n of_o he_o and_o they_o shall_v curse_v themselves_o that_o when_o they_o live_v under_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o be_v call_v to_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o will_v satisfy_v themselves_o in_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o spirit_n christ_n come_v from_o heaven_n once_o to_o we_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n but_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n shall_v come_v again_o in_o his_o glory_n with_o all_o his_o angel_n all_o his_o saint_n about_o he_o and_o then_o how_o happy_a will_v those_o appear_v that_o in_o the_o yet_o further_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o this_o that_o while_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n by_o a_o poor_a minister_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n to_o call_v you_o unto_o he_o to_o draw_v you_o to_o come_v unto_o he_o if_o you_o shall_v reject_v this_o invitation_n and_o other_o invitation_n that_o you_o have_v by_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n know_v that_o of_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o you_o commit_v in_o all_o your_o life_n this_o will_v prove_v to_o be_v the_o great_a that_o you_o have_v stand_v
now_o this_o i_o may_v show_v you_o in_o abundance_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o very_a first_o commission_n that_o jesus_n christ_n give_v unto_o his_o apostle_n after_o his_o resurrection_n to_o go_v and_o preach_v throughout_o the_o world_n he_o say_v unto_o they_o in_o mark_n 16.15_o verse_n go_v you_o into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v this_o be_v clear_a that_o christ_n will_v have_v we_o in_o our_o first_o believe_v to_o have_v a_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a and_o so_o we_o find_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o promise_n as_o this_o be_v in_o the_o text_n in_o jer._n 6.16_o verse_n thus_o say_v the_o lord_n stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o see_v and_o ask_v for_o the_o old_a path_n where_o the_o good_a way_n be_v and_o walk_v therein_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n inquire_v after_o the_o good_a way_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n so_o that_o you_o see_v god_n propound_v duty_n together_o with_o promise_n the_o lord_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o what_o will_v work_v most_o upon_o we_o and_o therefore_o for_o we_o to_o think_v that_o we_o must_v have_v no_o aim_n at_o all_o of_o any_o good_a to_o ourselves_o in_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o grace_n but_o self-love_n to_o come_v former_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v they_o willing_a to_o deny_v their_o own_o opinion_n their_o own_o will_n their_o own_o affection_n their_o former_a way_n to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prize_v he_o and_o christ_n and_o his_o way_n the_o way_n of_o christ_n more_o than_o they_o prize_v their_o very_a life_n here_o in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o there_o come_v a_o temptation_n upon_o they_o i_o but_o you_o seek_v christ_n only_o to_o free_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o to_o save_v you_o and_o fullness_n of_o god_n what_o a_o gradation_n be_v here_o that_o show_v the_o admirable_a use_n of_o know_v god_n in_o christ_n whereas_o now_o other_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o only_o be_v teach_v in_o their_o childhood_n to_o serve_v god_n they_o must_v serve_v god_n and_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o many_o sin_n and_o they_o perform_v duty_n they_o will_v pray_v and_o come_v to_o hear_v but_o not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o draw_v holiness_n from_o god_n through_o christ_n how_o far_o be_v those_o from_o have_v this_o text_n make_v good_a in_o their_o heart_n that_o be_v from_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o fullness_n of_o god_n whereas_o afterward_o they_o come_v to_o have_v more_o clear_a understanding_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n from_o christ_n then_o they_o come_v to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n more_o than_o ever_o they_o do_v whereas_o before_o they_o be_v stranger_n to_o god_n now_o they_o have_v communion_n with_o he_o yea_o now_o they_o feel_v god_n fullness_n come_v more_o full_o into_o their_o heart_n then_o before_o now_o they_o feel_v a_o fullness_n from_o god_n and_o so_o come_v by_o degree_n to_o be_v what_o be_v say_v in_o this_o text_n to_o be_v fill_v with_o all_o the_o fullness_n of_o god_n the_o reason_n of_o all_o the_o emptiness_n scantiness_n and_o barrenness_n that_o be_v in_o your_o heart_n be_v for_o want_v of_o understanding_n how_o god_n have_v fill_v christ_n with_o all_o fullness_n from_o who_o we_o be_v to_o receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n and_o by_o draw_v grace_n from_o christ_n we_o come_v to_o have_v permanent_a holiness_n and_o last_a holiness_n and_o this_o indeed_o be_v the_o reason_n as_o heretofore_o you_o have_v hear_v why_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o saint_n endure_v for_o ever_o and_o they_o can_v never_o fail_v whereas_o the_o grace_n of_o adam_n do_v fail_v because_o the_o one_o come_v from_o god_n through_o christ_n and_o the_o other_o before_o only_o we_o bring_v it_o in_o now_o as_o a_o further_a motive_n to_o make_v we_o seek_v for_o holiness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n this_o rest_n of_o sanctification_n some_o rule_v i_o will_v brief_o propound_v by_o way_n of_o direction_n as_o help_n in_o seek_v of_o grace_n and_o sanctification_n in_o christ_n as_o first_o labour_n to_o get_v a_o sense_n of_o your_o want_n of_o holiness_n and_o of_o your_o need_n of_o christ_n for_o it_o second_o in_o the_o exercise_v of_o yourselves_o in_o the_o ordinance_n be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o the_o ordinance_n any_o further_a than_o you_o sanctification_n by_o christ_n many_o christian_n they_o seek_v to_o have_v christ_n but_o why_o that_o they_o may_v have_v peace_n that_o they_o may_v have_v comfort_n and_o they_o make_v their_o i_o may_v have_v peace_n but_o a_o true_a gracious_a heart_n will_v rather_o say_v thus_o the_o more_o holiness_n i_o have_v the_o more_o peace_n i_o have_v and_o therefore_o i_o will_v labour_v for_o peace_n that_o i_o may_v have_v holiness_n one_o labour_n for_o holiness_n that_o he_o may_v have_v peace_n and_o the_o other_o labour_n for_o peace_n that_o he_o may_v have_v holiness_n now_o those_o christian_n that_o labour_v rather_o for_o peace_n that_o they_o may_v have_v holiness_n will_v more_o thrive_v then_o the_o other_o that_o labour_n for_o holiness_n that_o they_o may_v have_v peace_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o it_o be_v one_o good_a motion_n to_o labour_n for_o holiness_n because_o it_o will_v bring_v peace_n i_o but_o it_o be_v a_o strong_a motive_n to_o labour_v for_o peace_n and_o look_v to_o that_o for_o that_o will_v be_v a_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n that_o will_v trouble_v you_o if_o there_o be_v any_o secret_a sin_n thou_o live_v in_o it_o will_v be_v as_o a_o thorn_n in_o the_o flesh_n that_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v quiet_a second_o another_o thing_n that_o will_v hinder_v the_o rest_n of_o believer_n be_v that_o because_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o they_o desire_v they_o will_v not_o take_v notice_n of_o what_o good_a god_n have_v grant_v to_o they_o because_o they_o have_v not_o all_o they_o will_v have_v they_o think_v they_o have_v soul_n find_v not_o christ_n for_o the_o present_a and_o the_o rest_n thou_o desire_v yet_o if_o thou_o have_v any_o news_n of_o he_o any_o beginning_n of_o god_n work_n in_o thy_o soul_n take_v
