in_o the_o original_n that_o be_v the_o mercy_n and_o love_n of_o god_n and_o also_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o which_o be_v the_o death_n and_o bloodshed_n of_o the_o best-beloved_a and_o only_a son_n of_o god_n then_o he_o begin_v again_o through_o this_o glass_n to_o behold_v sin_n in_o the_o ugly_a visage_n thereof_o and_o thereby_o be_v constrain_v to_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v afresh_o for_o commit_v of_o that_o which_o can_v not_o by_o any_o mean_n be_v purify_v and_o cleanse_v but_o by_o the_o precious_a blood_n of_o that_o immaculate_a lamb_n of_o god_n 7.9_o 2._o cor._n 7.9_o christ_n so_o many_o spark_n of_o doubt_v and_o distrust_n in_o the_o grievous_a appearance_n of_o sin_n that_o the_o brokenhearted_a christian_n be_v thus_o prick_v and_o perplex_v have_v nothing_o more_o common_a and_o usual_a in_o his_o mouth_n than_o condemnation_n yea_o withal_o sometime_o he_o grow_v so_o extreme_a and_o outrageous_a in_o these_o distrustful_a passion_n that_o no_o reason_n can_v satisfy_v and_o persuade_v he_o for_o a_o time_n but_o that_o he_o want_v faith_n though_o indeed_o he_o have_v the_o truth_n of_o faith_n show_v it_o self_n in_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o within_o he_o three_o faith_n now_o as_o i_o have_v say_v have_v bring_v forth_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n to_o this_o end_n sin_n a_o hatred_n &_o loathe_n of_o sin_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v true_o humble_v though_o for_o her_o weakness_n be_v but_o late_o spring_v it_o be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v it_o under_o measure_n yet_o by_o little_a and_o little_a it_o grow_v to_o some_o ripeness_n and_o therefore_o next_o upon_o or_o rather_o joint_o with_o this_o mourning_n it_o breed_v a_o hatred_n and_o loathe_n of_o sin_n jesus_n a_o desire_n and_o longing_n after_o the_o righteousness_n of_o mercy_n and_o all_o these_o be_v the_o notable_a and_o undoubted_a fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o most_o certain_a argument_n and_o evident_a token_n that_o true_a faith_n although_o not_o in_o her_o full_a perfection_n be_v sure_o seat_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o he_o that_o have_v they_o god_n a_o taste_n &_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n four_o after_o all_o these_o they_o grow_v by_o little_a and_o little_a to_o have_v some_o taste_n and_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n impart_v to_o they_o by_o the_o inward_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n insomuch_o that_o every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o conquer_v &_o subdue_v the_o despair_a thought_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o motion_n thereof_o and_o the_o comfortable_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n seem_v every_o day_n more_o than_o other_o to_o have_v a_o large_a and_o free_a passage_n in_o the_o chamber_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o testify_v unto_o they_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o work_n of_o their_o adoption_n five_o after_o all_o these_o ensue_v that_o full_a assurance_n and_o most_o notable_a doubt_v they_o have_v faith_n because_o they_o find_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o strong_a in_o themselves_o as_o they_o perceive_v it_o to_o be_v in_o other_o that_o all_o their_o sin_n be_v wash_v away_o in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o by_o his_o death_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v appease_v their_o ransom_n pay_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o imputation_n make_v they_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o hell_n abolish_v and_o life_n eternal_a purchase_v after_o this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o course_n and_o manner_n of_o man_n conversion_n thus_o deliver_v let_v we_o now_o return_v again_o unto_o the_o break_a and_o afflict_a soul_n which_o doubt_v of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n and_o withal_o let_v we_o see_v and_o sift_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o thus_o despayr_v of_o his_o faith_n and_o think_v and_o persuade_v himself_o that_o he_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o his_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o he_o do_v not_o find_v within_o himself_o as_o of_o sin_n and_o a_o thirst_a and_o long_v after_o righteousness_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v often_o find_v in_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o such_o time_n as_o they_o receive_v this_o caline_z and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n now_o to_o prove_v these_o to_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o attendant_n of_o true_a faith_n the_o rather_o to_o qualify_v and_o allay_v the_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a combat_n of_o the_o trouble_a soul_n let_v we_o diligent_o consider_v first_n the_o principal_a efficient_a cause_n and_o worker_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o mourning_n which_o i_o speak_v of_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o adoption_n for_o this_o cause_n the_o apostle_n call_v it_o a_o sorrow_n that_o be_v of_o god_n 8.26_o 2._o cor._n 7.9_o 10._o rom._n 8.26_o 2._o cor._n 7._o and_o the_o spirit_n be_v say_v romans_z 8._o to_o pray_v in_o we_o with_o sigh_n that_o can_v be_v express_v this_o spirit_n be_v only_o have_v and_o retain_v of_o we_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o faith_n 3.2_o gal._n 3.2_o for_o it_o be_v receive_v and_o dwell_v in_o cur_n heart_n by_o faith_n gal._n 3.2_o whereupon_o it_o also_o follow_v that_o of_o necessity_n it_o can_v none_o otherwise_o be_v but_o where_o this_o earnest_a sorrow_n and_o earnest_a loathe_n and_o detestation_n of_o sin_n be_v find_v there_o also_o faith_n shall_v be_v ingraff_v because_o otherwise_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n which_o effect_v these_o in_o we_o can_v not_o be_v entertain_v in_o our_o heart_n second_o this_o sorrow_n 51._o psal_n 51._o which_o otherwise_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o subject_n be_v call_v a_o contrite_a and_o break_a heart_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o sacrifice_n of_o god_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o he_o will_v not_o despise_v and_o how_o can_v this_o be_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o thing_n so_o acceptable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o so_o well_o accept_v of_o he_o if_o and_o discern_v of_o we_o whether_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n or_o no_o until_o such_o time_n as_o it_o be_v so_o grow_v to_o a_o head_n and_o have_v take_v such_o root_n in_o we_o as_o that_o it_o begin_v open_o to_o show_v forth_o some_o undoubted_a fruit_n and_o effect_n thereof_o whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o distress_a conscience_n unacquainted_a with_o the_o several_a no_o faith_n at_o all_o wherefore_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a that_o we_o further_o consider_v of_o certain_a particular_n worthy_a observation_n in_o the_o course_n and_o order_n of_o man_n conversion_n first_o therefore_o we_o must_v know_v in_o man_n effectual_a conversion_n that_o as_o man_n by_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n be_v utter_o blind_a and_o ignorant_a of_o his_o own_o estate_n for_o his_o foolish_a heart_n be_v full_a of_o darkness_n increase_v his_o ignorance_n be_v expel_v and_o knowledge_n increase_v so_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o his_o inward_a operation_n join_v with_o the_o outward_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n expel_v the_o mist_n of_o ignorance_n and_o in_o stead_n thereof_o he_o place_v the_o light_n of_o knowledge_n and_o this_o either_o in_o respect_n of_o man_n himself_o fetch_v before_o he_o the_o danger_n of_o his_o own_o condition_n or_o in_o respect_n and_o regard_n of_o god_n and_o this_o in_o a_o double_a manner_n for_o as_o there_o be_v two_o part_n of_o the_o word_n viz._n the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n so_o by_o the_o one_o god_n be_v make_v know_v unto_o we_o as_o a_o judge_n full_a of_o wrath_n and_o anger_n against_o such_o as_o have_v sin_v and_o transgress_v against_o his_o law_n and_o by_o the_o other_o that_o be_v the_o gospel_n he_o be_v reveal_v unto_o we_o as_o a_o most_o love_a father_n full_a of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o thus_o far_o the_o elect_n and_o reprobate_n may_v go_v both_o together_o for_o the_o very_a castawaye_n have_v a_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n of_o oftentimes_o with_o the_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n of_o it_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v some_o joy_n though_o it_o be_v but_o momentany_a 13.20_o mat._n 13.20_o which_o in_o the_o parable_n and_o delight_v himself_o in_o the_o very_a thought_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v unlikely_a and_o which_o he_o never_o look_v shall_v come_v to_o pass_v and_o so_o his_o joy_n vanish_v so_o these_o man_n in_o a_o bare_a conceit_n and_o a_o naked_a knowledge_n for_o the_o time_n do_v seem_v to_o joy_n and_o solace_v themselves_o in_o the_o word_n &_o promise_n of_o life_n which_o notwithstanding_o do_v not_o concern_v they_o and_o so_o their_o joy_n quick_o vanish_v and_o fall_v away_o as_o though_o it_o have_v never_o be_v after_o this_o knowledge_n in_o some_o measurable_a sort_n effect_v as_o shall_v be_v think_v in_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n convenient_a knowledge_n his_o application_n &_o use_n of_o his_o knowledge_n then_o grow_v the_o application_n and_o use_n of_o the_o same_o knowledge_n according_a to_o the_o two_o part_n thereof_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n first_o when_o a_o man_n find_v in_o the_o law_n the_o anger_n and_o curse_v of_o god_n against_o sin_n and_o confer_v the_o thing_n forbid_v in_o the_o law_n with_o his_o own_o life_n and_o action_n he_o conclude_v straightway_o either_o the_o safety_n or_o the_o danger_n of_o his_o own_o estate_n and_o this_o i_o may_v right_o term_v a_o legal_a conscience_n whereby_o through_o this_o examination_n so_o make_v of_o his_o action_n and_o assume_v the_o same_o either_o by_o affirmation_n or_o negation_n upon_o the_o general_a sentence_n of_o the_o law_n before_o discern_v a_o man_n in_o himself_o be_v either_o acquit_v or_o condemn_v in_o regard_n of_o his_o deed_n these_o be_v find_v to_o be_v incident_a both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n though_o in_o both_o they_o be_v not_o accompany_v with_o the_o like_a effect_n and_o this_o prick_n and_o sting_v of_o conscience_n be_v the_o thing_n which_o disarmeth_z the_o weak_a christian_a that_o be_v not_o to_o the_o full_a renew_v of_o all_o hope_n and_o comfort_n while_o he_o be_v too_o much_o bend_v upon_o it_o and_o intentive_a in_o it_o and_o so_o much_o the_o more_o because_o that_o find_v this_o to_o be_v a_o thing_n whereby_o heeis_n assimilate_v and_o make_v so_o like_a unto_o one_o that_o be_v indeed_o a_o reprobate_n he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o find_v out_o the_o odds_n nor_o to_o make_v the_o difference_n that_o be_v betwixt_o they_o 3._o upon_o this_o application_n come_v a_o regeneration_n to_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o thou_o if_o not_o i_o say_v then_o that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n to_o see_v the_o man_n of_o god_n that_o be_v as_o yet_o unregenerate_a to_o drench_v himself_o so_o deep_o in_o sin_n for_o until_o he_o feel_v these_o token_n in_o some_o part_n appear_v in_o he_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o in_o wicked_a and_o disorder_a course_n of_o life_n there_o be_v little_a or_o no_o difference_n at_o all_o to_o be_v find_v betwixt_o he_o and_o the_o reprobate_n and_o yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o also_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n calling_n be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o we_o so_o uncertain_a and_o unknown_a i_o affirm_v that_o all_o this_o notwithstanding_o a_o man_n may_v in_o time_n be_v call_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v not_o so_o say_v even_o dead_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o hide_a life_n still_o remain_v in_o it_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o we_o read_v of_o diverse_a the_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o noah_n lot_n david_n peter_n and_o other_o who_o faith_n be_v sometime_o bring_v to_o so_o low_a a_o ebb_n and_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o sometime_o in_o they_o prevail_v so_o much_o and_o so_o mighty_o that_o if_o we_o respect_v their_o do_n for_o the_o time_n they_o seem_v to_o have_v little_a or_o no_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o as_o man_n no_o whit_n regenerate_v do_v give_v themselves_o over_o to_o commit_v of_o sin_n and_o those_o most_o odious_a and_o abominable_a and_o without_o any_o respect_n do_v show_v and_o behave_v themselves_o as_o man_n secure_a and_o careless_a for_o the_o time_n which_o time_n of_o their_o secure_a loose_a and_o sinful_a manner_n of_o life_n i_o may_v just_o call_v the_o time_n of_o god_n desertion_n for_o that_o he_o do_v as_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o they_o the_o lively_a and_o effectual_a work_n and_o operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n permit_v satan_n and_o the_o flesh_n for_o a_o time_n to_o have_v the_o sovereignty_n and_o dominion_n over_o they_o and_o for_o that_o the_o time_n also_o of_o this_o desertion_n as_o experience_n teach_v be_v not_o alike_o to_o all_o but_o in_o some_o be_v of_o short_a and_o in_o other_o of_o a_o long_a continuance_n as_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o wisdom_n shall_v appoint_v i_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o this_o say_a time_n of_o to_o these_o i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o purity_n in_o the_o high_a perfection_n which_o they_o contend_v for_o be_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v desire_v if_o possible_o it_o can_v be_v have_v but_o man_n so_o long_o as_o he_o live_v in_o this_o corrupt_a tabernacle_n of_o this_o pollute_a flesh_n be_v to_o make_v none_o other_o account_n but_o to_o find_v many_o and_o great_a yea_o infinite_a and_o exceed_o great_a imperfection_n in_o himself_o for_o although_o the_o power_n and_o force_v of_o sin_n to_o condemnation_n of_o man_n be_v by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n death_n abolish_v and_o take_v sin_n thou_o will_v consider_v with_o thyself_o how_o thou_o do_v commit_v it_o for_o even_o in_o the_o commit_n thereof_o thou_o shall_v find_v many_o contrary_a and_o repine_a motion_n grudge_v and_o rise_v against_o this_o sin_n that_o thou_o will_v so_o willing_o leave_v and_o forsake_v for_o where_o thou_o seem_v to_o yield_v obedience_n and_o subjection_n unto_o sin_n yet_o it_o be_v doubtless_o a_o force_a obedience_n and_o against_o thy_o will_n much_o like_a to_o one_o that_o be_v take_v captive_a by_o his_o enemy_n which_o yield_v himself_o into_o the_o power_n of_o his_o enemy_n perforce_o and_o against_o his_o will_n with_o a_o grudge_n and_o a_o disdainful_a heart_n full_o in_o mind_n persuade_v that_o if_o he_o do_v know_v how_o to_o rid_v himself_o out_o of_o his_o enemy_n hand_n and_o ever_o after_o continuat_o to_o resist_v and_o fight_v against_o he_o object_n but_o here_o thou_o will_v reply_v that_o thou_o contrary_a to_o such_o a_o man_n take_v captive_a have_v a_o willingness_n in_o thou_o and_o take_v a_o pleasure_n and_o a_o delight_n in_o sin_n and_o that_o therefore_o i_o do_v great_o mistake_v the_o matter_n and_o be_o far_o deceive_v as_o that_o it_o be_v too_o open_a and_o manifest_a and_o therefore_o may_v be_v some_o occasion_n to_o procure_v unto_o they_o the_o loss_n of_o their_o gain_n and_o profit_n loss_n of_o their_o name_n and_o credit_n of_o sanctity_n and_o holiness_n or_o such_o like_a whereof_o i_o have_v before_o speak_v in_o so_o much_o that_o they_o can_v be_v willing_a and_o content_a without_o any_o of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o and_o that_o they_o have_v true_a sanctification_n in_o their_o life_n and_o therefore_o do_v flatter_v themselves_o oftentimes_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o deed_n whereas_o in_o deed_n they_o have_v nothing_o less_o as_o have_v be_v before_o somewhat_o touch_v and_o shall_v in_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n by_o god_n grace_n more_o at_o large_a be_v declare_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v likely_a say_v the_o framer_n of_o this_o objection_n that_o notwithstanding_o these_o mark_n the_o elect_a of_o god_n may_v be_v deceive_v in_o judge_v that_o word_n have_v confirm_v these_o to_o be_v witness_n to_o assure_v we_o of_o our_o election_n as_o be_v aforesaid_a have_v also_o leave_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o same_o word_n certain_a mark_n and_o undoubted_a difference_n whereby_o his_o elect_n may_v both_o easy_o and_o also_o right_o judge_v and_o discern_v of_o these_o thing_n as_o shall_v appear_v by_o the_o particular_a discourse_n other_o sometime_o feel_v they_o and_o to_o think_v they_o as_o other_o often_o find_v they_o in_o themselves_o yet_o can_v i_o never_o sufficient_o describe_v they_o well_o i_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n touch_v they_o but_o they_o only_o can_v sound_v the_o depth_n and_o reach_v the_o bottom_n of_o these_o extremity_n which_o have_v sometime_o taste_v and_o in_o some_o measure_n feel_v the_o bitterness_n of_o this_o gall_n and_o wormwood_n notwithstanding_o as_o by_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o the_o wound_n the_o inward_a pain_n may_v be_v conjecture_v and_o by_o the_o external_a struggle_n we_o may_v guess_v the_o internal_a conflict_n effect_n the_o greatness_n of_o these_o extremity_n discern_v in_o part_n by_o the_o effect_n so_o likewise_o by_o the_o effect_n that_o come_v from_o the_o sorrow_n of_o sin_n appear_v outward_o in_o the_o body_n we_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n learn_v how_o great_a that_o grief_n and_o anguish_n be_v that_o possess_v the_o heart_n within_o for_o beside_o the_o plaint_n before_o set_v down_o he_o oftentimes_o bedew_v his_o face_n with_o tear_n and_o weep_a the_o body_n also_o oftentimes_o wax_v lean_a and_o wan_a fret_v away_o and_o waste_v as_o pain_v with_o some_o grievous_a and_o consume_a sickness_n not_o unlike_a as_o touch_v the_o outward_a appearance_n to_o those_o pang_n which_o david_n a_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n do_v feel_v in_o himself_o cry_v out_o and_o say_n 38.3_o psal_n 6.6_o psal_n 38.3_o i_o faint_v in_o my_o mourning_n psal_n 6.6_o there_o be_v nothing_o sound_a in_o my_o flesh_n because_o to_o heal_v up_o the_o most_o pestilent_a sore_n and_o to_o cure_v the_o most_o contagious_a and_o deadly_a wound_n of_o sin_n and_o withal_o look_v into_o themselves_o and_o find_v there_o a_o defect_n and_o want_n to_o receive_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o themselves_o be_v they_o never_o so_o sweet_a and_o precious_a because_o they_o have_v not_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o only_a hand_n to_o retain_v and_o hold_v they_o they_o be_v more_o distress_v and_o affright_v then_o if_o they_o never_o hear_v or_o think_v upon_o they_o insomuch_o that_o as_o satan_n be_v ready_a always_o to_o cast_v something_o in_o their_o way_n thereby_o to_o further_o they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o desperation_n so_o be_v they_o as_o ready_a so_o soon_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v offer_v to_o catch_v it_o and_o accept_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n and_o therefore_o never_o think_v of_o god_n order_n and_o course_n of_o call_v which_o be_v in_o some_o soon_o in_o some_o late_a and_o not_o alike_o in_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o present_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n within_o they_o and_o the_o pulse_n of_o faith_n to_o move_v and_o beat_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o stick_v not_o peremptory_o and_o without_o exception_n to_o conclude_v upon_o themselves_o say_v i_o have_v no_o faith_n i_o can_v believe_v and_o therefore_o i_o can_v be_v save_v my_o sin_n can_v be_v pardon_v i_o be_o but_o a_o reprobate_n and_o a_o damn_a castaway_n so_o that_o this_o motion_n be_v not_o only_o find_v in_o such_o as_o have_v a_o utter_a defect_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n but_o also_o oftentimes_o in_o those_o which_o have_v a_o faith_n who_o although_o as_o i_o have_v say_v they_o have_v a_o faith_n in_o deed_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o weak_a and_o a_o faint_a faith_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o for_o infirmity_n be_v not_o able_a to_o move_v and_o stir_v itself_o for_o as_o the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n swoon_n such_o who_o faith_n be_v weak_a compare_v to_o a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o he_o who_o part_n be_v benumb_v with_o some_o extreme_a cold_a or_o sudden_a stroke_n though_o there_o be_v a_o life_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o yet_o such_o be_v their_o infirmity_n that_o they_o seem_v as_o dead_a and_o be_v unable_a to_o perform_v the_o function_n that_o belong_v unto_o a_o live_a body_n even_o so_o this_o faith_n though_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o faith_n and_o have_v a_o life_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o benumb_a with_o the_o chill_a cold_a of_o sin_n and_o astonish_v with_o the_o stroke_n of_o our_o natural_a imperfection_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o vital_a motion_n so_o that_o sin_n unto_o this_o weak_a and_o waver_a soul_n be_v even_o as_o meat_n be_v oftentimes_o to_o he_o that_o surfete_v he_o eat_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o his_o stomach_n come_v to_o digest_v and_o work_v upon_o it_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v the_o abundance_n of_o unconcoct_v humour_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v sick_a and_o weaken_a in_o every_o part_n and_o faculty_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v glut_v and_o
somewhat_o overlay_v with_o sin_n though_o concern_v the_o outward_a man_n he_o take_v delight_n and_o pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o stomach_n of_o his_o soul_n that_o be_v when_o by_o due_a meditation_n he_o begin_v to_o work_v and_o chew_v upon_o it_o such_o be_v the_o want_n of_o spiritual_a heat_n and_o such_o be_v the_o weakness_n of_o his_o faith_n that_o be_v not_o able_a to_o suppress_v the_o surcharge_v terror_n of_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n that_o proceed_v therefrom_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n he_o begin_v many_o time_n to_o be_v sick_a with_o sorrow_n than_o the_o heart_n be_v trouble_v and_o every_o part_n begin_v to_o droop_v and_o faint_v by_o reason_n of_o this_o despair_a crudity_n and_o sinful_a sickness_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o proof_n hereof_o we_o have_v diverse_a example_n in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n 38._o faith_n not_o at_o all_o time_n alike_o strong_a in_o the_o worthy_a of_o the_o saint_n psal_n 38._o david_n no_o doubt_n have_v a_o faith_n yet_o such_o sometime_o be_v the_o weakness_n of_o it_o that_o when_o he_o come_v to_o the_o ruminate_v and_o remembrance_n of_o his_o sin_n he_o fall_v into_o great_a extremity_n as_o it_o appear_v in_o the_o thirty_o eight_o psalm_n peter_n also_o have_v a_o faith_n and_o yet_o when_o by_o weakness_n and_o frailty_n he_o have_v so_o lie_v swear_v &_o forswear_v himself_o against_o his_o master_n how_o bitter_o be_v he_o perplex_v within_o himself_o and_o paul_n a_o sanctify_a and_o select_a vessel_n when_o he_o consider_v the_o doubtful_a conflict_n betwixt_o the_o law_n of_o his_o member_n and_o of_o his_o mind_n and_o see_v how_o he_o be_v lead_v captive_a unto_o sin_n his_o faith_n so_o much_o exception_n that_o they_o be_v castaway_n yet_o can_v they_o not_o on_o the_o other_o side_n for_o the_o time_n be_v certify_v and_o assure_v of_o their_o life_n and_o safety_n but_o stand_v as_o but_o also_o in_o consideration_n of_o this_o his_o present_a state_n he_o grow_v to_o a_o great_a mislike_n and_o severe_a censure_v of_o himself_o and_o thus_o or_o in_o some_o such_o like_a sort_n he_o reason_v within_o himself_o say_v if_o i_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n himself_o the_o weak_a christian_n manner_n of_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v himself_o if_o i_o be_v one_o of_o his_o if_o he_o think_v strange_a of_o this_o distrust_n within_o himself_o or_o if_o that_o he_o complain_v of_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n in_o himself_o for_o you_o must_v

assurance_n for_o the_o time_n seem_v to_o be_v cancel_v and_o clean_o raze_v out_o and_o he_o feel_v not_o the_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o far_o and_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o at_o other_o former_a time_n and_o therefore_o he_o begin_v great_o to_o doubt_v of_o his_o estate_n not_o so_o much_o whether_o he_o have_v a_o faith_n or_o not_o as_o whether_o his_o faith_n be_v a_o true_a faith_n or_o only_o temporary_a and_o for_o a_o time_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o very_a reprobate_n and_o castawaye_n upon_o which_o doubtfulness_n there_o do_v arise_v oftentimes_o in_o he_o many_o strong_a and_o grievous_a conflict_n and_o that_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o because_o that_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n be_v not_o well_o instruct_v or_o at_o the_o least_o not_o well_o remember_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o true_a faith_n from_o that_o which_o be_v only_o feign_v temporary_a dead_a and_o hypocritical_a and_o withal_o be_v too_o too_o ready_a &_o incline_v to_o suspect_v ever_o the_o worst_a that_o may_v be_v of_o itself_o turn_v every_o motion_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o infirmity_n of_o nature_n to_o be_v so_o many_o reason_n to_o drive_v he_o forward_o to_o despair_v against_o this_o evil_a therefore_o we_o be_v to_o use_v these_o remedy_n first_o the_o man_n which_o doubt_v in_o this_o manner_n of_o sometime_o none_o at_o all_o for_o though_o this_o testimony_n of_o assurance_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o faith_n as_o have_v be_v say_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o discern_v of_o they_o which_o be_v endue_v with_o it_o no_o though_o it_o have_v be_v sometime_o feel_v and_o perceive_v before_o example_n hereof_o we_o may_v have_v in_o david_n a_o man_n before_o regenerate_v &_o such_o a_o one_o as_o have_v often_o feel_v in_o himself_o this_o inward_a testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o assure_v his_o heart_n that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o faith_n grow_v in_o he_o so_o weak_a sometime_o and_o the_o flesh_n so_o mighty_o prevail_v that_o as_o one_o utter_o destitute_a of_o this_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o though_o the_o spirit_n have_v sometime_o be_v eclipse_v and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sun_n which_o sometime_o do_v shine_v in_o his_o full_a strength_n and_o sometime_o be_v shadow_v and_o hide_v under_o cloud_n like_o the_o tree_n that_o sometime_o flourish_v be_v fresh_a and_o green_a and_o sometime_o fade_v again_o seem_v dry_a and_o dead_a as_o blast_v or_o like_o the_o child_n within_o the_o womb_n that_o sometime_o move_v strong_o and_o sometime_o again_o rest_v a_o long_a time_n quiet_a and_o void_a of_o sensible_a and_o apparent_a motion_n now_o as_o it_o be_v against_o reason_n to_o faith_n the_o moon_n be_v darken_v and_o eclipse_v and_o the_o sun_n be_v hide_v and_o shadow_v under_o a_o cloud_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o moon_n no_o sun_n at_o all_o the_o tree_n be_v dry_a and_o naked_a and_o therefore_o be_v decay_v the_o child_n do_v not_o show_v a_o continual_a and_o apparent_a motion_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v dead_a within_o the_o womb_n so_o it_o be_v very_o absurd_a also_o to_o say_v that_o because_o thy_o faith_n be_v eclipse_v and_o darken_v by_o the_o cloud_n of_o our_o imperfection_n bite_v and_o beat_v with_o the_o outrageousness_n of_o the_o flesh_n lie_v still_o and_o quiet_a without_o her_o wont_a motion_n that_o therefore_o it_o be_v cease_v to_o be_v a_o faith_n or_o be_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o this_o reason_n can_v be_v no_o reason_n at_o be_v counterfeit_a false_a and_o temporary_a it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v understand_v that_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v by_o these_o mark_n first_o in_o that_o it_o yield_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o though_o not_o always_o this_o sure_a persuasion_n that_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v remit_v and_o forgive_v and_o that_o not_o for_o any_o merit_n or_o desert_n of_o we_o but_o by_o and_o through_o the_o merit_n and_o precious_a bloodshedding_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n second_o upon_o this_o ensue_v or_o rather_o together_o with_o this_o be_v annex_v a_o and_o desire_n to_o entertain_v and_o harbour_v again_o this_o spirit_n of_o comfort_n in_o thy_o mourn_a soul_n but_o can_v not_o as_o thou_o think_v attain_v to_o the_o same_o why_o pluck_v up_o thy_o heart_n be_v not_o dismay_v nor_o trouble_v herewith_o but_o rather_o be_v thou_o assure_v that_o these_o be_v motion_n and_o affection_n so_o far_o unmeet_a for_o any_o man_n to_o ground_n despair_n upon_o that_o every_o sigh_n and_o tear_v that_o be_v spend_v therein_o be_v so_o many_o reason_n and_o argument_n to_o strengthen_v and_o confirm_v thy_o heart_n that_o thou_o be_v a_o choose_a vessel_n and_o a_o elect_a child_n of_o god_n be_v it_o likely_a think_v thou_o that_o he_o that_o be_v unregenerate_a and_o abide_v still_o in_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o take_v a_o pleasure_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o filthy_a lust_n thereof_o shall_v take_v such_o joy_n and_o solace_n in_o the_o spirit_n as_o that_o he_o can_v not_o tolerate_v or_o abide_v to_o have_v the_o same_o absent_a from_o he_o will_v he_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v because_o he_o withdraw_v himself_o from_o he_o or_o will_v he_o long_o after_o the_o spirit_n and_o wish_v and_o desire_v to_o find_v and_o feel_v it_o work_v within_o he_o i_o assure_v thou_o no_o these_o affection_n be_v not_o of_o the_o flesh_n but_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o see_v how_o much_o thou_o be_v deceive_v that_o while_o the_o spirit_n work_v thus_o effectual_o within_o thy_o heart_n yet_o thou_o complain_v of_o the_o want_n thereof_o and_o say_v thou_o feel_v it_o not_o thou_o find_v it_o not_o and_o the_o reason_n whereby_o thou_o be_v lead_v to_o think_v and_o judge_v thus_o of_o thyself_o be_v because_o that_o thou_o be_v so_o intentive_a upon_o one_o only_a fruit_n forget_v that_o this_o case_n be_v that_o in_o view_v and_o consider_v the_o faith_n of_o other_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n we_o be_v not_o overmuch_o intentive_a in_o comparison_n of_o it_o with_o our_o own_o estate_n for_o hecreby_o oftentimes_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o while_o we_o too_o much_o gaze_v upon_o their_o perfection_n and_o then_o look_v down_o again_o upon_o our_o own_o infirmity_n we_o fall_v not_o only_o to_o a_o dislike_n but_o oftentimes_o to_o a_o marvelous_a distrust_n and_o despair_n of_o our_o own_o estate_n much_o like_a to_o he_o that_o gaze_v too_o much_o upon_o the_o sun_n have_v his_o eye_n dazzle_v with_o the_o brightness_n thereof_o that_o when_o he_o look_v down_o again_o upon_o the_o earth_n he_o hardly_o see_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o or_o at_o the_o least_o not_o so_o lively_a a_o resemblance_n as_o he_o do_v before_o in_o this_o point_n therefore_o we_o must_v remember_v first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o perfection_n but_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v require_v for_o if_o thy_o faith_n be_v true_a and_o unfeigned_a though_o it_o be_v in_o thy_o eye_n weak_a and_o feeble_a it_o be_v sufficient_a the_o hand_n and_o arm_n that_o be_v not_o dead_a indeed_o but_o only_o take_v with_o a_o shake_a palsy_n be_v able_a to_o receive_v a_o reward_n that_o shall_v be_v give_v as_o effeclual_o though_o not_o so_o steady_o as_o be_v the_o hand_n and_o arm_n be_v strong_a and_o sound_a without_o such_o imperfection_n so_o faith_n though_o faint_a and_o feeble_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o cumber_v with_o many_o doubt_a cogitation_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o shake_a palsy_n yet_o see_v it_o be_v not_o dead_a but_o lively_o assure_v thyself_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o receive_v at_o god_n hand_n the_o penny_n &_o reward_n of_o eternal_a life_n second_o thou_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o god_n bestow_v his_o grace_n in_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o think_v good_a in_o his_o own_o wisdom_n to_o some_o he_o give_v more_o to_o some_o tempt_v not_o under_o but_o that_o he_o tempt_v not_o over_o and_o above_o that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v wherefore_o thou_o may_v here_o see_v and_o mark_v again_o how_o this_o doctrine_n scru_v still_o to_o increase_v and_o further_a thy_o comfort_n but_o not_o to_o breed_v or_o bring_v despair_n at_o all_o for_o he_o that_o have_v the_o great_a temptation_n though_o he_o have_v a_o strong_a and_o a_o long_a combat_n and_o some_o great_a trouble_n therewith_o yet_o he_o have_v a_o assure_a argument_n of_o the_o strength_n of_o faith_n which_o in_o time_n convenient_a shall_v get_v the_o upper_a hand_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o have_v but_o small_a assault_n and_o such_o as_o he_o can_v easy_o master_v beside_o the_o comfort_n he_o be_v to_o have_v in_o that_o he_o oftentimes_o affect_v unto_o goodness_n as_o the_o covetous_a man_n be_v affect_v unto_o riches_n he_o think_v he_o have_v never_o enough_o he_o be_v so_o greedy_a that_o he_o can_v never_o be_v satisfy_v the_o more_o he_o have_v the_o more_o he_o covet_v every_o light_a loss_n be_v think_v of_o he_o to_o be_v a_o exceed_a hindrance_n and_o every_o slender_a want_n make_v he_o sad_a and_o heavy_a so_o the_o true_a christian_a have_v such_o a_o inward_a longing_n after_o the_o fruit_n of_o his_o regeneration_n that_o have_v he_o never_o so_o much_o yet_o be_v he_o never_o satisfy_v but_o still_o covet_v and_o crve_v out_o for_o more_o if_o he_o find_v any_o defect_n within_o himself_o he_o be_v straightway_o so_o grieve_a and_o perplex_v therewith_o that_o he_o think_v still_o all_o too_o little_a for_o he_o whereupon_o compare_v his_o deed_n which_o be_v imperfect_a with_o the_o perfect_a duty_n that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n require_v at_o his_o hand_n and_o find_v so_o great_a odds_n and_o difference_n betwixt_o they_o he_o than_o fall_v into_o many_o doubtful_a and_o distrustful_a suspicion_n of_o his_o own_o estate_n which_o suspicion_n be_v in_o he_o the_o more_o conversation_n and_o so_o strait_o link_v and_o couple_v together_o true_a faith_n and_o good_a work_n as_o unseparable_a companion_n and_o such_o as_o can_v not_o be_v just_o sever_v or_o part_v asunder_o unto_o this_o there_o be_v also_o annex_v the_o unequal_a comparison_n of_o himself_o with_o other_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n who_o virtue_n and_o godliness_n of_o life_n be_v register_v and_o record_v in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n and_o find_v so_o great_a inequality_n betwixt_o they_o and_o he_o he_o than_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o fearful_a punishment_n that_o be_v denounce_v and_o threaten_v in_o the_o scripture_n against_o such_o sin_n and_o imperfection_n as_o he_o find_v within_o himself_o and_o hereupon_o it_o fall_v out_o that_o have_v his_o heart_n by_o this_o mean_v possess_v with_o such_o a_o sinister_a judgement_n of_o his_o own_o estate_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o writhe_v and_o convert_v all_o to_o the_o worst_a that_o may_v be_v he_o grow_v to_o many_o gricuous_a passion_n in_o himself_o and_o unto_o all_o these_o inconvenience_n he_o be_v lead_v as_o it_o be_v step_n by_o step_n and_o by_o degree_n for_o want_v of_o due_a remembrance_n of_o the_o state_n of_o christian_n after_o the_o time_n of_o their_o regeneration_n wherefore_o let_v we_o see_v what_o comfort_n may_v be_v have_v for_o the_o help_a and_o cure_v of_o this_o cuill_n also_o now_o because_o the_o question_n be_v not_o only_o of_o the_o weakness_n but_o herewithal_o also_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o repentance_n whether_o it_o be_v repentance_n indeed_o or_o not_o i_o think_v it_o very_o expedient_a and_o necessary_a by_o way_n of_o preparation_n first_o to_o search_v out_o what_o true_a repentance_n be_v and_o second_o how_o and_o by_o what_o mark_n it_o may_v be_v know_v and_o discern_v from_o that_o which_o be_v feign_v and_o hypocritical_a repentance_n in_o scripture_n have_v two_o special_a name_n to_o express_v and_o declare_v the_o nature_n thereof_o one_o in_o the_o prophet_n where_o it_o be_v call_v a_o turn_n or_o return_v unto_o god_n and_o the_o other_o in_o the_o gospel_n where_o it_o be_v call_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d which_o signify_v a_o change_n or_o alteration_n of_o the_o mind_n so_o that_o as_o turn_v or_o return_v impli_v a_o leave_v and_o a_o acceptation_n a_o lean_v of_o that_o evil_a way_n which_o before_o we_o follow_v and_o a_o accept_n of_o that_o good_a &_o right_a path_n which_o before_o we_o shun_v and_o as_o change_n import_v two_o thing_n the_o corruption_n of_o the_o former_a form_n and_o the_o induction_n of_o a_o new_a so_o repentance_n have_v in_o it_o two_o part_n a_o for_o sake_z of_o sin_n and_o a_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n a_o conversion_n from_o evil_a and_o a_o change_n and_o alteration_n unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a for_o if_o we_o will_v be_v account_v in_o the_o number_n of_o those_o which_o be_v true_o repentant_a we_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v cast_v as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o new_a mould_n our_o old_a stamp_n must_v be_v utter_o raze_v and_o deface_v and_o a_o new_a must_v be_v imprint_v and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n mean_v when_o it_o say_v we_o must_v be_v bear_v again_o these_o two_o part_n in_o scripture_n be_v call_v in_o other_o term_n mortification_n and_o vinification_n mortification_n whereby_o the_o deed_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v mortify_v strike_v dead_a and_o quell_v in_o we_o and_o therefore_o be_v call_v the_o mortification_n of_o the_o flesh_n vinification_n whereby_o we_o be_v quicken_v encourage_v and_o prick_v forward_o unto_o righteousness_n the_o spirit_n get_v the_o mastery_n and_o preeminence_n above_o the_o flesh_n and_o therefore_o be_v call_v the_o quicken_a or_o vinification_n of_o the_o spirit_n repentance_n then_o describe_v repentance_n describe_v have_v these_o two_o essential_a part_n may_v in_o this_o manner_n be_v describe_v that_o it_o be_v a_o grace_n and_o work_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n whereby_o our_o heart_n and_o mind_n be_v alter_v and_o change_v from_o follow_v of_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o wicked_a to_o embrace_v of_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o godly_a now_o if_o this_o change_n and_o alteration_n be_v find_v in_o we_o we_o may_v then_o say_v and_o assure_v ourselves_o that_o we_o have_v true_a repentance_n indeed_o but_o because_o the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v not_o quick_o know_v nor_o easy_o discern_v and_o for_o that_o we_o may_v soon_o through_o satan_n craft_n be_v deceive_v in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o reprobate_n which_o oftentimes_o or_o rather_o always_o account_v their_o feign_a and_o hypocritical_a conversion_n to_o be_v a_o true_a conversion_n when_o as_o in_o deed_n if_o it_o be_v thorough_o try_v it_o be_v nothing_o less_o we_o be_v next_o to_o consider_v how_o and_o by_o what_o mark_v true_a repentance_n be_v to_o be_v discern_v and_o know_v and_o so_o we_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o judge_v right_o of_o our_o own_o chap._n x._o of_o the_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n the_o first_o assure_v mark_v therefore_o to_o know_v true_a repentance_n by_o sin_n 1._o inward_a &_o hearty_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v that_o inward_a and_o hearty_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n as_o a_o efficient_a cause_n whereby_o it_o be_v effect_v in_o we_o for_o they_o that_o be_v true_o repentant_a shall_v soon_o find_v in_o themselves_o first_o this_o inward_a compunction_n and_o contrition_n of_o heart_n for_o the_o sin_n which_o they_o have_v commit_v whereupon_o will_v ensue_v and_o follow_v this_o earnest_a care_n to_o shun_v and_o avoid_v the_o same_o and_o a_o studious_a desire_n and_o endeavour_n
begin_v to_o be_v pinch_v with_o famine_n and_o that_o in_o such_o great_a and_o extreme_a manner_n that_o for_o his_o relief_n in_o this_o his_o great_a necessity_n he_o will_v fain_o have_v fill_v his_o hungry_a belly_n with_o the_o husk_n appoint_v for_o the_o swine_n meat_n which_o his_o master_n appoint_v he_o to_o keep_v but_o none_o be_v find_v so_o pitiful_a to_o give_v they_o unto_o he_o wherein_o we_o see_v the_o justice_n of_o the_o law_n execute_v upon_o he_o and_o hereupon_o grow_v his_o first_o sorrow_n void_a of_o comfort_n when_o he_o see_v himself_o by_o his_o wilful_a disobedience_n and_o looseness_n of_o life_n to_o be_v bring_v to_o such_o a_o miserable_a case_n three_o he_o be_v in_o this_o manner_n plague_v and_o by_o that_o plague_n drive_v into_o sorrow_n he_o be_v say_v to_o come_v unto_o himself_o and_o then_o call_v to_o mind_v the_o good_a estate_n even_o of_o his_o father_n servant_n in_o that_o they_o have_v bread_n and_o victual_n enough_o to_o sustain_v their_o hungry_a body_n and_o he_o as_o one_o like_a to_o perish_v with_o hunger_n he_o than_o resolve_v with_o himself_o again_o to_o return_v and_o to_o go_v to_o his_o father_n with_o a_o humble_a confession_n and_o acknowledgement_n of_o his_o fault_n and_o humble_a submission_n to_o his_o father_n order_n and_o a_o full_a assurance_n that_o he_o shall_v find_v favour_n at_o his_o father_n hand_n and_o all_o these_o as_o it_o be_v bedew_v with_o the_o tear_n of_o his_o sorrowful_a heart_n that_o he_o have_v so_o grievous_o offend_v so_o kind_a and_o so_o love_v a_o father_n and_o in_o all_o these_o point_n do_v appear_v unto_o we_o the_o comfortable_a promise_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n so_o that_o unto_o this_o second_o mourning_n begin_v thus_o upon_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o lewdness_n of_o his_o life_n on_o the_o one_o part_n and_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o person_n against_o who_o he_o have_v offend_v on_o the_o other_o part_n it_o appear_v that_o there_o be_v annex_v a_o assure_a hope_n to_o obtain_v remission_n of_o his_o fault_n at_o his_o father_n hand_n a_o receive_n again_o into_o favour_n and_o a_o comfort_n and_o help_v unto_o he_o in_o these_o his_o misery_n otherwise_o sure_o he_o will_v never_o thus_o have_v reason_v with_o himself_o as_o he_o do_v bring_v his_o reason_n from_o the_o good_a estate_n of_o his_o father_n servant_n to_o confirm_v in_o himself_o the_o hope_n of_o his_o own_o neither_o will_v he_o have_v be_v so_o resolute_a to_o have_v return_v to_o his_o father_n house_n and_o in_o such_o manner_n to_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o confess_v his_o fault_n have_v there_o not_o be_v in_o he_o a_o great_a confidence_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v again_o receive_v i_o may_v hereunto_o add_v the_o example_n of_o mary_n magdalen_n who_o no_o doubt_n mourn_v and_o yet_o have_v a_o hope_n of_o remission_n and_o therewithal_o a_o joy_n and_o therefore_o be_v bold_a to_o come_v unto_o christ_n but_o for_o brevity_n cause_n i_o will_v not_o stand_v hereupon_o here_o i_o will_v not_o have_v the_o sorrowful_a soul_n to_o be_v over-captious_a and_o to_o take_v all_o thing_n in_o the_o worst_a part_n for_o when_o i_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o joy_n a_o peace_n and_o a_o faith_n attend_v upon_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n i_o will_v not_o have_v he_o therefore_o think_v that_o it_o be_v always_o feel_v in_o manifest_a and_o open_a motion_n and_o therefore_o because_o he_o find_v it_o not_o so_o cheerful_a in_o himself_o that_o therefore_o his_o sorrow_n be_v but_o hypocritical_a and_o counterfeit_a for_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o this_o joy_n peace_n and_o faith_n as_o it_o oftentimes_o fall_v out_o be_v not_o at_o the_o first_o easy_o perceive_v and_o that_o because_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v often_o so_o dim_v and_o dazzle_v with_o the_o excess_n of_o sorrow_n and_o mourning_n that_o we_o can_v see_v &_o perceive_v they_o as_o otherwise_o we_o may_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o same_o be_v still_o abide_v &_o remain_v in_o we_o as_o may_v very_o well_o be_v gather_v even_o by_o those_o weak_a and_o feeble_a motion_n which_o proceed_v therefrom_o feeble_n i_o say_v in_o our_o sight_n and_o judgement_n but_o otherwise_o in_o themselves_o strong_a and_o mighty_a this_o be_v prove_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o example_n of_o peter_n who_o no_o doubt_n by_o the_o inward_a testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v indeed_o know_v assure_o that_o his_o sin_n commit_v in_o deny_v his_o master_n shall_v be_v remit_v and_o yet_o he_o afterward_o grow_v to_o such_o excessive_a mourning_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o sin_n as_o appear_v 51._o psal_n 51._o so_o that_o it_o seem_v he_o have_v almost_o forget_v this_o promise_n compassion_n these_o thing_n as_o we_o see_v be_v find_v to_o be_v in_o the_o godly_a in_o their_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o wicked_a for_o they_o in_o their_o sorrow_n in_o stead_n of_o come_v to_o god_n do_v flee_v from_o he_o in_o stead_n of_o hope_n and_o assurance_n of_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n have_v still_o judgement_n fear_n and_o dread_a before_o their_o eye_n persuade_v themselves_o that_o their_o sin_n be_v so_o great_a and_o many_o that_o god_n can_v and_o so_o filthy_a that_o he_o will_v not_o remit_v and_o forgive_v they_o chap._n xi_o a_o admonition_n to_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n these_o thing_n be_v right_o consider_v i_o will_v wish_v the_o sorrowful_a soul_n not_o to_o be_v so_o rash_a and_o peremptory_a in_o his_o censure_n at_o the_o do_n of_o the_o husbandman_n and_o use_v he_o as_o his_o schoolmaster_n in_o this_o case_n to_o teach_v he_o a_o profitable_a lesson_n the_o husbandman_n when_o he_o have_v toil_v thereof_o for_o if_o he_o see_v it_o but_o chit_v in_o the_o ground_n he_o rest_v patient_o for_o the_o time_n content_v expect_v and_o look_v for_o a_o happy_a and_o a_o plentiful_a harvest_n in_o due_a time_n to_o follow_v upon_o his_o labour_n so_o thou_o although_o at_o the_o first_o thou_o find_v such_o a_o small_a growth_n of_o these_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o yet_o despair_n not_o for_o if_o they_o be_v as_o yet_o but_o chit_v and_o do_v appear_v in_o thy_o eye_n very_o small_a stay_v the_o time_n with_o patience_n and_o assure_v thyself_o that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o time_n will_v give_v a_o further_a blessing_n and_o what_o if_o thy_o peace_n thy_o joy_n and_o comfort_n be_v not_o grow_v to_o such_o perfection_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v in_o thyself_o in_o these_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n also_o come_v to_o god_n and_o be_v bold_a to_o crave_v remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n as_o often_o as_o they_o say_v but_o the_o lord_n prayer_n which_o with_o many_o of_o they_o be_v full_a oft_o and_o every_o day_n answ_n whereunto_o may_v be_v answer_v 29.13_o esay_n 29.13_o that_o this_o be_v not_o to_o come_v and_o approach_v to_o god_n for_o though_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o draw_v near_o and_o honour_n god_n with_o their_o lip_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o away_o neither_o do_v their_o prayer_n howsoever_o they_o make_v a_o outward_a show_n proceed_v from_o any_o good_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o have_v a_o desire_n and_o longing_n to_o obtain_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o pray_v for_o but_o only_o be_v hypocritical_o use_v for_o a_o show_n and_o fashion_n sake_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o in_o truth_n deserve_v the_o name_n of_o prayer_n since_o it_o be_v only_o outwardlabour_v of_o the_o lip_n for_o he_o that_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n as_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v must_v do_v it_o with_o a_o true_a heart_n 10.22_o heb._n 10.22_o as_o witness_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 10.22_o in_o which_o sort_n all_o they_o do_v which_o be_v thorough_o break_v under_o sin_n in_o their_o heart_n do_v loath_a it_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o desire_v to_o be_v release_v and_o free_v from_o it_o and_o therefore_o do_v earnest_o pray_v to_o have_v it_o pardon_v think_v nothing_o to_o they_o so_o joyful_a as_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o bondage_n thereof_o as_o for_o the_o other_o concern_v who_o this_o objection_n be_v make_v although_o they_o can_v make_v a_o great_a show_n of_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n &_o that_o they_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o same_o and_o that_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n they_o do_v present_v themselves_o before_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n yet_o for_o that_o they_o do_v not_o come_v with_o a_o true_a heart_n do_v not_o in_o heart_n detest_v their_o sin_n but_o take_v a_o delight_n and_o pleasure_n therein_o and_o still_o covet_v to_o frequent_v and_o use_v that_o evil_a which_o in_o their_o word_n and_o mouth_n they_o make_v a_o show_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o they_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n neither_o that_o they_o can_v obtain_v any_o thing_n by_o this_o their_o liplaboured_n prayer_n savour_v only_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o not_o of_o truth_n chap._n xii_o of_o loathe_v of_o sin_n the_o second_o mark_n of_o repentance_n the_o second_o thing_n 2._o mark_v 2._o which_o i_o set_v for_o a_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n be_v a_o hearty_a and_o inward_a hatred_n and_o loathe_n of_o sin_n not_o only_o in_o that_o it_o be_v simple_o a_o cause_n of_o judgement_n but_o especial_o in_o that_o it_o be_v a_o offence_n against_o god_n that_o be_v so_o gracious_a and_o so_o love_v a_o father_n this_o hatred_n be_v not_o to_o be_v number_v among_o the_o work_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o prohibit_v and_o forbid_v unto_o man_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v just_o account_v among_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o give_v in_o charge_n &_o commandment_n unto_o man_n and_o may_v very_o well_o be_v call_v a_o godly_a hatred_n for_o that_o hereby_o our_o love_n to_o god_n be_v to_o be_v show_v forth_o and_o prove_v according_a to_o the_o say_n you_o that_o love_v love_v the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o again_o 163._o i_o hate_v falsehood_n and_o abhor_v it_o and_o to_o prove_v that_o this_o hatred_n ought_v to_o be_v in_o we_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o we_o have_v commit_v and_o also_o in_o respect_n and_o regard_n of_o god_n against_o who_o we_o have_v sin_v 51._o psal_n 51._o look_v to_o the_o do_n of_o their_o petition_n in_o pitiful_a manner_n pour_v forth_o give_v a_o evident_a testimony_n that_o they_o be_v so_o desirous_a and_o have_v such_o a_o earnest_a longing_n to_o be_v deliver_v as_o that_o they_o be_v ready_a and_o willing_a to_o take_v any_o lawful_a course_n be_v it_o never_o so_o painful_a so_o that_o they_o may_v obtain_v their_o desire_n yea_o they_o seem_v to_o think_v it_o very_o long_o before_o they_o hear_v it_o this_o be_v prove_v unto_o we_o also_o even_o by_o the_o example_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n who_o most_o earnest_o pray_v and_o beseech_v the_o lord_n against_o his_o imperfection_n and_o prick_v of_o his_o flesh_n moreover_o with_o this_o hatred_n be_v also_o to_o be_v join_v a_o shame_n and_o confusion_n in_o the_o person_n repentant_a because_o of_o sin_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o man_n for_o so_o the_o very_a hypocrite_n be_v ashamed_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a to_o hide_v and_o
repentance_n 3._o he_o must_v not_o so_o much_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o measure_n as_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o repentance_n &_o that_o with_o good_a advice_n what_o the_o thing_n be_v whereat_o we_o do_v aim_n and_o which_o we_o labour_v especial_o to_o search_v after_o and_o to_o find_v out_o in_o this_o trial_n and_o examination_n for_o even_o in_o this_o point_n also_o there_o be_v oftentimes_o error_n find_v by_o reason_n whereof_o among_o man_n there_o arise_v no_o small_a inconvenience_n the_o thing_n therefore_o that_o herein_o we_o be_v to_o have_v a_o special_a eye_n unto_o be_v not_o the_o great_a measure_n and_o quantity_n but_o rather_o the_o truth_n of_o repentance_n for_o although_o it_o be_v never_o so_o slender_a and_o weak_a in_o our_o conceit_n yet_o if_o forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o true_a repentance_n in_o such_o abundant_a and_o plentiful_a manner_n as_o thou_o haply_o do_v dream_v of_o yet_o do_v not_o this_o let_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o but_o that_o both_o thy_o faith_n and_o thy_o repentance_n may_v be_v true_a and_o therefore_o such_o whereupon_o thou_o may_v settle_v and_o ground_n thyself_o and_o whereby_o thou_o may_v assure_v thyself_o that_o thou_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o if_o his_o child_n then_o sure_o free_v from_o condemnation_n and_o make_v a_o heir_n even_o a_o coheyre_n with_o christ_n our_o head_n of_o that_o do_v but_o sinoke_n yet_o herein_o be_v there_o no_o cause_n of_o discomfort_n first_o for_o that_o as_o faith_n so_o likewise_o true_a repentance_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n who_o be_v not_o to_o be_v prescribe_v and_o appoint_v in_o what_o mcasure_n he_o shall_v give_v the_o same_o to_o every_o one_o and_o second_o for_o that_o it_o please_v he_o to_o be_v so_o gracious_a and_o favourable_a as_o to_o accept_v these_o imperfection_n in_o good_a part_n at_o thy_o hand_n for_o the_o which_o thou_o be_v not_o only_o to_o be_v thankful_a to_o he_o at_o all_o time_n but_o have_v also_o a_o reason_n offer_v thou_o here_o he_o must_v consider_v what_o he_o be_v by_o nature_n and_o know_v that_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v free_a from_o imperfection_n while_o he_o live_v here_o to_o move_v thou_o continual_o to_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o the_o good_a increase_n of_o these_o his_o gift_n in_o thou_o four_o thou_o be_v to_o consider_v diligent_o with_o thyself_o and_o to_o look_v well_o upon_o thy_o own_o estate_n i_o mean_v what_o thou_o be_v of_o thyself_o and_o by_o nature_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v thou_o shall_v sure_o find_v that_o thou_o be_v one_o of_o adam_n brood_n one_o that_o haste_v suck_v corruption_n 51.5_o psal_n 51.5_o and_o that_o in_o great_a measure_n from_o the_o breast_n of_o thy_o first_o parent_n as_o well_o as_o other_o for_o not_o only_o thy_o life_n 51.1_o psal_n 51.1_o but_o also_o thy_o conception_n and_o birth_n will_v be_v find_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v in_o sin_n since_o than_o that_o thou_o be_v a_o man_n and_o therefore_o by_o nature_n subject_a to_o all_o kind_n of_o infirmity_n as_o well_o as_o other_o during_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o continuance_n in_o this_o corrupt_a tabernacle_n do_v not_o deceive_v thyself_o but_o be_v thou_o assure_v that_o thy_o flesh_n will_v never_o give_v over_o but_o still_o will_v be_v find_v to_o be_v a_o flesh_n that_o be_v a_o rebellious_a and_o a_o grievous_a enemy_n continual_o rebel_a contend_v and_o strive_v against_o the_o spirit_n until_o such_o time_n as_o it_o shall_v by_o god_n appointment_n either_o receive_v the_o stroke_n of_o death_n to_o subdue_v it_o and_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o rebellion_n thereof_o or_o that_o wonderful_a and_o sudden_a change_n be_v make_v at_o the_o last_o day_n 15.53_o 1._o cor._n 15.53_o when_o this_o corruptible_a shall_v put_v on_o incorruption_n this_o vile_a body_n shall_v be_v change_v that_o it_o may_v be_v fashion_v like_o unto_o the_o glorious_a body_n of_o christ_n since_o now_o the_o state_n stand_v so_o with_o if_o thou_o live_v never_o so_o holy_o if_o thou_o lead_v as_o pure_a a_o life_n as_o ever_o do_v any_o of_o the_o faithful_a servant_n of_o god_n that_o have_v be_v since_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n christ_n jesus_n only_o except_v yet_o as_o those_o faithful_a servant_n can_v never_o find_v salvation_n in_o their_o own_o deed_n but_o do_v clean_o forsake_v themselves_o and_o cleave_v fast_o to_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n so_o thou_o also_o although_o thou_o seek_v it_o shall_v never_o find_v salvation_n in_o thy_o own_o work_n &_o merit_v thereof_o but_o must_v be_v content_a with_o the_o godly_a to_o renounce_v thyself_o and_o lean_v fast_o to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n in_o who_o sure_o thou_o must_v seek_v it_o in_o seek_v thou_o shall_v find_v it_o and_o find_v thou_o shall_v doubtless_o possess_v it_o quest_n whereunto_o then_o will_v thou_o say_v do_v serve_v the_o fruit_n of_o repentance_n answ_n no_o doubt_n to_o very_o good_a and_o comfortable_a purpose_n for_o these_o say_a fruit_n be_v as_o sign_n and_o seal_n to_o testify_v they_o be_v no_o cause_n to_o procure_v and_o effect_v salvation_n and_o life_n unto_o thou_o quest_n but_o thou_o will_v please_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o good_a pleasure_n to_o rebate_v the_o measure_n of_o these_o so_o dangerous_a tentation_n make_v thou_o strong_a to_o withstand_v they_o and_o to_o restore_v thou_o again_o unto_o that_o inward_a comfort_n and_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o his_o spirit_n work_v in_o thou_o and_o final_o with_o this_o prayer_n have_v patience_n also_o leisure_n he_o must_v wait_v the_o lord_n leisure_n to_o expect_v his_o leisure_n and_o stay_v the_o time_n till_o he_o shall_v think_v it_o most_o convenient_a to_o grant_v and_o perform_v thy_o suit_n assure_v thyself_o that_o as_o i_o have_v say_v before_o whatsoever_o shall_v be_v most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o glory_n first_o and_o then_o for_o the_o help_n and_o case_n of_o thy_o necessity_n in_o due_a time_n then_o to_o make_v a_o end_n but_o in_o those_o thing_n whereof_o we_o be_v to_o entreat_v that_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a and_o appliable_a for_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o cause_n we_o have_v in_o hand_n it_o be_v very_o necessary_a to_o consider_v how_o the_o break_a and_o afflict_a conscience_n use_v these_o affliction_n as_o a_o matter_n of_o great_a discomfort_n and_o upon_o what_o ground_n especial_o his_o despair_a conclusion_n do_v take_v their_o force_n and_o that_o i_o find_v to_o be_v in_o these_o two_o thing_n the_o first_o be_v from_o the_o original_n of_o these_o affliction_n which_o this_o person_n afflict_v false_o think_v and_o indge_v to_o be_v the_o anger_n and_o wrath_n of_o god_n conceive_v against_o he_o upon_o this_o false_a ground_n infer_v and_o that_o very_o peremptory_o that_o he_o be_v without_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o none_o of_o his_o elect_a child_n the_o second_o be_v bring_v from_o the_o misconsiruction_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o property_n of_o these_o affliction_n think_v they_o to_o be_v judgement_n and_o punishment_n only_o incident_a and_o befalling_a to_o the_o wicked_a whereas_o they_o be_v very_o common_o find_v to_o be_v rather_o correction_n and_o chastizement_n inflict_v and_o lay_v oftentimes_o even_o upon_o god_n best_a and_o dear_a child_n and_o that_o not_o for_o their_o evil_n in_o any_o respect_n but_o only_o for_o their_o good_a now_o to_o help_v they_o forward_o in_o these_o two_o point_n through_o satan_n subtlety_n there_o do_v concur_v also_o the_o continuance_n &_o exceed_a measure_n of_o the_o affliction_n which_o he_o use_v as_o a_o violent_a stream_n to_o drive_v he_o forward_o in_o the_o former_a misconceit_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o as_o he_o suppose_v or_o as_o he_o can_v see_v there_o be_v none_o of_o god_n child_n that_o do_v equal_a and_o match_v he_o in_o the_o extremity_n of_o these_o his_o misery_n or_o else_o because_o he_o judge_v and_o take_v this_o which_o indeed_o be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o righteous_a and_o judgement_n of_o the_o reprobate_n i_o mean_v the_o greatness_n and_o the_o long_a continuance_n of_o the_o afftiction_n for_o the_o better_a satisfy_n of_o such_o person_n and_o for_o the_o reformation_n of_o this_o their_o corrupt_a opinion_n and_o judgement_n i_o purpose_v to_o observe_v and_o keep_v this_o course_n and_o order_n first_o to_o show_v and_o prove_v that_o the_o original_n of_o the_o affliction_n lay_v upon_o god_n child_n be_v not_o hatred_n in_o god_n but_o his_o love_n towards_o those_o that_o be_v afflict_v second_o that_o the_o same_o affliction_n be_v such_o as_o both_o do_v and_o of_o necessity_n must_v befall_v the_o child_n of_o god_n three_o that_o there_o be_v no_o affliction_n wherein_o we_o have_v not_o some_o of_o god_n child_n in_o former_a time_n that_o have_v taste_v as_o deepo_n thereof_o as_o we_o do_v now_o four_o that_o the_o greatness_n and_o continuance_n of_o misery_n be_v not_o a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o judgement_n of_o reprobate_n in_o this_o life_n and_o the_o correction_n of_o god_n inflict_v on_o his_o choose_a and_o last_o i_o purpose_v to_o add_v certain_a several_a comfort_n out_o of_o the_o book_n of_o god_n against_o this_o so_o dangerous_a a_o temptation_n chap._n xvi_o of_o the_o first_o position_n and_o the_o objection_n against_a the_o same_o concern_v the_o first_o i_o affirm_v same_o 1._o god_n afflict_v not_o his_o child_n in_o hatred_n but_o in_o love_n as_o appear_v 1._o by_o his_o moderate_v the_o same_o that_o if_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n be_v utter_o want_v in_o this_o respect_n yet_o the_o very_a consideration_n of_o or_o if_o it_o be_v in_o hatred_n and_o not_o in_o love_n and_o favour_n towards_o we_o may_v he_o or_o will_v he_o not_o rather_o cut_v and_o break_v asunder_o the_o very_a cable_n of_o our_o trust_n that_o the_o only_a difference_n be_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o operation_n or_o to_o speak_v more_o plain_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o distribute_v and_o divide_v his_o gift_n among_o man_n and_o according_a to_o this_o operation_n or_o distribution_n there_o be_v diverse_a name_n ascribe_v unto_o he_o in_o the_o scripture_n and_o yet_o the_o spirit_n be_v but_o one_o and_o the_o same_o still_o as_o for_o a_o example_n when_o this_o spirit_n effect_v wisdom_n in_o any_o it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n when_o he_o do_v effect_v peace_n and_o joy_n he_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o peace_n and_o joy_n when_o he_o work_v this_o witness_n of_o adoption_n in_o any_o it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n and_o on_o the_o other_o part_n when_o he_o put_v fear_n and_o terror_n into_o any_o he_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v dinner_n sity_n of_o gift_n etc._n 1._o cor._n 12.8_o etc._n etc._n but_o the_o same_o spirit_n for_o to_o one_o be_v give_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o word_n of_o wisdom_n and_o to_o another_o the_o word_n of_o knowledge_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o be_v give_v faith_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o gift_n of_o heal_a by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o operation_n of_o great_a work_n and_o to_o another_o prophecy_n and_o to_o another_o the_o discern_a of_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n and_o to_o another_o the_o interpretation_n of_o tongue_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n work_v even_o the_o self_n same_o spirit_n distribute_v to_o every_o man_n several_o as_o he_o will_n so_o that_o in_o nature_n and_o essence_n it_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o distribution_n of_o all_o these_o gift_n both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o also_o reprobate_n although_o the_o person_n in_o who_o he_o work_v be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v find_v to_o be_v diverse_a see_v then_o that_o the_o case_n stand_v so_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o that_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o some_o part_n be_v give_v and_o impart_v unto_o they_o i_o think_v it_o very_o expedient_a for_o the_o remove_n of_o all_o doubt_n which_o may_v arise_v concern_v this_o my_o assertion_n first_o to_o show_v in_o what_o manner_n this_o spirit_n be_v and_o do_v thus_o diverse_o work_v in_o the_o one_o and_o in_o the_o other_o in_o the_o elect_a and_o in_o the_o reprobate_n and_o seeond_o what_o be_v the_o true_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v be_v discern_v as_o touch_v the_o first_o it_o be_v be_v consider_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o essence_n very_a god_n and_o therefore_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v contain_v in_o any_o thing_n but_o fill_v heaven_n &_o earth_n and_o therefore_o when_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o any_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v that_o he_o be_v in_o they_o by_o his_o work_n and_o operation_n and_o this_o manner_n of_o his_o be_v in_o they_o be_v after_o two_o sort_n either_o natural_a or_o else_o supernatural_a natural_a i_o call_v that_o which_o exceed_v not_o the_o course_n and_o reach_v of_o man_n nature_n and_o this_o be_v such_o as_o touch_v and_o concerncth_v the_o be_v only_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o spirit_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o very_a senseless_a creature_n and_o to_o have_v his_o work_n and_o operation_n in_o they_o for_o by_o this_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o every_o thing_n be_v and_o have_v his_o be_v and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n it_o be_v preserve_v and_o maintain_v or_o else_o it_o be_v such_o as_o concern_v thing_n sensible_a and_o endue_v with_o life_n sense_n and_o motion_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v impart_v unto_o the_o very_a dumb_a
of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n that_o be_v mar_v and_o deface_v so_o great_o by_o the_o fali_a of_o adam_n this_o image_n or_o impression_n be_v easy_o know_v and_o discern_v from_o the_o counterfeit_n and_o outward_a show_n of_o hypocrite_n who_o sanctity_n and_o devotion_n be_v only_o outward_a glorious_a indeed_o they_o appear_v in_o the_o outward_a show_n like_o paint_a sepulcher_n but_o if_o they_o look_v inward_o unto_o the_o heart_n there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v find_v but_o rottenness_n and_o corruption_n so_o that_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v there_o see_v that_o the_o ruin_n of_o old_a adam_n be_v not_o yet_o again_o repair_v in_o they_o look_v therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v thou_o not_o unto_o the_o outward_a appearance_n be_v it_o never_o so_o glorious_a and_o goodly_a but_o look_v into_o thy_o soul_n the_o inward_a part_n and_o look_v so_o near_o as_o thou_o can_v into_o every_o corner_n thereof_o and_o see_v if_o thou_o can_v find_v the_o rubbish_n of_o adam_n fall_n to_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n sweep_v and_o cast_v out_o and_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n to_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n renew_v and_o imprint_v again_o upon_o thou_o which_o if_o thou_o can_v see_v and_o perceive_v then_o assure_v thyself_o that_o this_o testimony_n be_v in_o deed_n the_o undoubted_a and_o infallible_a wunesse_fw-fr and_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n three_o thou_o may_v know_v and_o discern_v it_o by_o the_o constancy_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o testimony_n that_o it_o give_v for_o it_o be_v not_o like_o the_o waver_a &_o unsteadfast_a flash_n of_o hypocrite_n which_o think_v marvelous_a well_o of_o themselves_o slatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o for_o a_o time_n in_o a_o blind_a conceit_n that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n but_o can_v grow_v indeed_o to_o any_o continual_a or_o certain_a resolution_n therein_o but_o this_o spirit_n if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hearken_v unto_o yield_v forth_o a_o full_a and_o a_o settle_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o election_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hear_v for_o that_o it_o oftentimes_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o faithful_a that_o though_o they_o have_v this_o certain_a witness_n within_o they_o yet_o the_o flesh_n sometime_o get_v the_o head_n and_o mastery_n over_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o speak_v so_o plain_o as_o it_o will_v and_o they_o also_o be_v thereupon_o trouble_v with_o this_o frailty_n which_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o do_v often_o fall_v into_o many_o waver_a and_o doubt_v thought_n while_o they_o do_v not_o listen_v attentive_o unto_o this_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o now_o seem_v to_o speak_v more_o cold_o and_o with_o a_o low_a and_o less_o audible_a voice_n unto_o their_o soul_n than_o heretofore_o for_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n do_v always_o witness_n and_o give_v also_o a_o most_o certain_a and_o constant_a witness_n for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o in_o the_o like_a measure_n to_o the_o discern_a of_o our_o soul_n but_o sometime_o more_o evident_o and_o sometime_o less_o yea_o and_o that_o sometime_o also_o so_o obscure_o as_o that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n while_o they_o be_v too_o much_o busy_v otherways_o in_o harken_v unto_o the_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n they_o do_v seem_v as_o though_o they_o hear_v it_o not_o at_o all_o wherefore_o if_o thou_o have_v once_o feel_v and_o find_v this_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o let_v it_o suffice_v thou_o and_o be_v therewith_o content_a his_o testimony_n once_o give_v be_v of_o great_a force_n for_o that_o as_o i_o have_v say_v he_o can_v lie_v therefore_o i_o say_v if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o have_v witness_v the_o same_o unto_o thou_o seal_v it_o up_o for_o a_o most_o certain_a truth_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o lead_v we_o to_o all_o truth_n speak_v nothing_o but_o truth_n have_v speak_v it_o and_o although_o now_o it_o seem_v to_o wax_v so_o cold_a in_o give_v evidence_n yet_o if_o it_o do_v but_o whisper_v nay_o if_o it_o do_v as_o you_o will_v say_v but_o breathe_v within_o thou_o that_o be_v give_v never_o so_o secret_a and_o small_a a_o testimony_n yet_o do_v not_o thou_o misdoubt_v it_o for_o even_o this_o be_v as_o sure_a as_o a_o thousand_o other_o clamorous_a and_o loud_a witness_n to_o confirm_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o election_n and_o be_v further_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o in_o any_o wise_a reject_v this_o testimony_n though_o it_o seem_v in_o thy_o eye_n but_o simple_a and_o slender_a without_o exceed_a injury_n offer_v unto_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n four_o in_o the_o manner_n also_o of_o the_o effect_v this_o certain_a witness_n and_o testimony_n thou_o may_v discern_v it_o to_o be_v the_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o adoption_n for_o it_o be_v whole_o and_o full_o in_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n even_o by_o by_o assure_v thy_o soul_n and_o conscience_n that_o christ_n with_o all_o his_o benefit_n be_v thou_o and_o that_o in_o and_o through_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o thou_o be_v become_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n and_o heir_n of_o everlasting_a glory_n now_o whereas_o by_o thy_o question_n move_v thou_o seem_v to_o doubt_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o testimony_n whether_o it_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o not_o i_o answer_v further_o be_v it_o any_o thing_n likely_a that_o satan_n will_v ever_o persuade_v any_o man_n of_o this_o assurance_n of_o such_o incomparable_a benefit_n as_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v purchase_v for_o his_o elect_n will_v he_o ever_o persuade_v man_n that_o in_o christ_n we_o be_v make_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n no_o i_o assure_v you_o that_o be_v far_o from_o satan_n purpose_n he_o know_v that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n serve_v not_o to_o advance_v but_o utter_o to_o overthrow_v his_o kingdom_n and_o therefore_o labour_v what_o he_o may_v to_o suppress_v the_o public_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v hide_v from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o man_n so_o far_o be_v he_o off_o from_o further_a of_o the_o inward_a application_n of_o the_o same_o unto_o the_o comfort_n of_o our_o soul_n wherein_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n consist_v therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n the_o hypocrite_n do_v flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o in_o their_o election_n it_o be_v not_o whole_o alone_o and_o principal_o in_o christ_n &_o from_o his_o death_n &_o passion_n that_o this_o persuasion_n arise_v but_o upon_o some_o other_o good_a like_n &_o cocker_a affection_n that_o they_o have_v unto_o their_o feign_a and_o hypocritical_a devotion_n while_o they_o take_v such_o slight_a and_o slender_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o themselves_o final_o this_o witness_n may_v be_v know_v by_o two_o notable_a and_o excellent_a effect_n attendant_a and_o wait_a upon_o the_o same_o first_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v hereby_o shed_v abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n 5.5_o rom._n 5.5_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n for_o it_o make_v we_o to_o have_v a_o certain_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n towards_o us._n second_o upon_o this_o follow_v another_o effect_n and_o that_o be_v that_o upon_o this_o sense_n of_o love_n and_o shed_v of_o his_o tender_a mercy_n in_o our_o heart_n to_o the_o taste_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o soul_n it_o cause_v we_o withal_o to_o cry_v and_o call_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o name_n of_o father_n for_o now_o when_o we_o thus_o feel_v his_o love_n and_o mercy_n whether_o we_o cast_v our_o eye_n downward_o upon_o ourselves_o or_o upward_o upon_o the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n we_o see_v and_o behold_v he_o still_o as_o a_o gracious_a love_a merciful_a and_o compassionate_a father_n reconcile_v to_o we_o by_o and_o through_o christ_n and_o ourselves_o to_o be_v his_o adopt_a son_n and_o child_n who_o he_o in_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n in_o grace_n and_o mercy_n have_v select_v and_o ordain_v unto_o life_n and_o that_o by_o and_o through_o the_o same_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n his_o dear_a son_n hitherto_o of_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n let_v we_o now_o come_v to_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o our_o regeneration_n chap._n xxxv_o of_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o regeneration_n hypocrite_n aswell_o as_o the_o regenerate_v have_v in_o outward_a show_n many_o good_a deed_n whereby_o they_o gain_v to_o themselves_o no_o small_a praise_n and_o commendation_n of_o devotion_n and_o
