by_o the_o free_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n as_o nature_n be_v a_o mere_a patient_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o work_n so_o though_o now_o be_v renew_v by_o grace_n it_o become_v in_o part_n a_o agent_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o of_o itself_o but_o mere_o by_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n enable_v it_o to_o every_o action_n and_o degree_n of_o increase_n both_o for_o the_o matter_n and_o manner_n thereof_o 2._o so_o that_o hereby_o we_o may_v discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n if_o we_o find_v the_o spirit_n daily_o quicken_a and_o further_a the_o work_n both_o stir_v up_o the_o good_a motion_n as_o the_o ground_n thereof_o and_o enable_v to_o put_v the_o motion_n into_o practice_n &_o give_v comfort_n in_o the_o practice_n by_o the_o acceptance_n thereof_o in_o christ_n above_o the_o worth_n thereof_o and_o hence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n to_o meet_v with_o diverse_a tentation_n incident_a to_o the_o new_a birth_n both_o for_o our_o trial_n and_o comfort_n therein_o that_o whereas_o we_o find_v ourselves_o tho_o true_o convert_v yet_o sometime_o to_o be_v unapt_a to_o holy_a duty_n find_v little_a comfort_n in_o they_o less_o power_n to_o resist_v corruption_n and_o so_o may_v think_v the_o work_n to_o be_v not_o only_o interrupt_v but_o quite_o undo_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v a_o creation_n not_o only_o in_o the_o beginning_n but_o in_o the_o proceed_n too_o psal_n 51.10_o though_o we_o may_v despair_v in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o yet_o must_v we_o now_o by_o faith_n still_o rely_v on_o our_o god_n who_o call_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o as_o if_o they_o be_v rom._n 4._o and_o yet_o see_v this_o creation_n be_v by_o mean_n though_o in_o themselves_o most_o unlikely_a yet_o effectual_a by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n hereto_o therefore_o for_o our_o recovery_n and_o proceed_v we_o must_v wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o mean_n for_o the_o renew_v of_o his_o work_n in_o due_a season_n second_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o as_o in_o nature_n though_o there_o be_v a_o quicken_a of_o every_o part_n at_o once_o yet_o it_o be_v in_o this_o order_n that_o first_o the_o faculty_n be_v first_o create_v whereby_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o action_n and_o then_o the_o action_n follow_v from_o those_o faculty_n in_o their_o order_n and_o time_n as_o the_o organ_n be_v create_v and_o fit_v thereto_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n the_o faculty_n be_v create_v in_o every_o part_n at_o the_o first_o in_o the_o understanding_n conscience_n will_n affection_n etc._n etc._n yet_o do_v not_o these_o faculty_n execute_v their_o several_a operation_n at_o the_o first_o by_o reason_n that_o the_o organ_n of_o those_o faculty_n be_v either_o yet_o not_o create_v or_o not_o fit_v for_o use_v whence_o follow_v these_o conclusion_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o growth_n and_o comfort_n therein_o 1._o for_o trial_n that_o see_v the_o faculty_n must_v lead_v to_o and_o enlive_v the_o action_n and_o of_o all_o faculty_n though_o the_o will_v be_v predominate_a yet_o the_o understanding_n must_v begin_v to_o discern_v what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v or_o undo_v and_o knowledge_n must_v inform_v and_o bind_v the_o conscience_n to_o the_o do_v thereof_o and_o so_o the_o will_v consequent_o be_v attempt_v and_o subdue_v to_o the_o performance_n or_o leave_v thereof_o therefore_o if_o we_o find_v this_o order_n in_o our_o growth_n we_o may_v undoubted_o conclude_v a_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n whereas_o in_o the_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n this_o order_n be_v pervert_v and_o deprave_a ofttimes_o many_o thing_n be_v do_v not_o so_o much_o out_o of_o knowledge_n or_o conscience_n but_o by_o example_n of_o other_o or_o sudden_a motion_n sometime_o of_o satan_n and_o our_o corrupt_a will_n upon_o outward_a respect_n and_o so_o on_o the_o contrary_n 2._o for_o comfort_v that_o if_o we_o find_v this_o order_n that_o knowledge_n lead_v conscience_n and_o conscience_n attempt_v the_o will_n and_o this_o by_o grace_n be_v subdue_v thereto_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o tentation_n or_o defect_n of_o other_o mean_n or_o ability_n the_o work_n be_v not_o do_v yet_o this_o be_v a_o good_a evidence_n of_o grow_v in_o grace_n if_o the_o will_v be_v still_o more_o constant_a thereto_o and_o desirous_a thereof_o in_o the_o disappointment_n of_o the_o good_a act_n and_o more_o averse_a to_o the_o evil_n commit_v hate_v what_o we_o do_v evil_a and_o love_v more_o the_o good_a undo_v use_v and_o renew_v the_o mean_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o the_o one_o and_o decline_v the_o mean_n for_o the_o renew_v of_o evil_a a_o second_o condition_n of_o the_o natural_a creature_n be_v that_o it_o grow_v up_o even_o from_o the_o first_o in_o every_o part_n as_o be_v quicken_v by_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o whole_a in_o the_o whole_a and_o whole_a in_o every_o part_n enliving_a and_o so_o increase_a the_o same_o and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o new_a creature_n every_o part_n and_o faculty_n be_v lively_o quicken_v by_o grace_n at_o first_o though_o it_o execute_v not_o present_o the_o operation_n thereof_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o so_o every_o part_n grow_v up_o together_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n thereof_o as_o we_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n so_o in_o conscience_n of_o obedience_n so_o in_o humility_n for_o it_o imperfection_n so_o in_o patience_n etc._n etc._n whence_o arise_v these_o comfortable_a rule_n both_o for_o the_o trial_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n 1_o for_o trial_n that_o if_o we_o find_v a_o genenerall_n affect_v of_o every_o part_n as_o well_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o will_n as_o a_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o same_o as_o well_o a_o love_n unto_o goodness_n as_o a_o hatred_n of_o sin_n as_o well_o a_o purpose_n of_o heart_n to_o leave_v it_o and_o do_v the_o contrary_a as_o a_o sight_n of_o it_o in_o the_o understanding_n and_o then_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o work_n see_v that_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v by_o the_o power_n of_o conscience_n natural_o especial_o be_v enlighten_v by_o the_o spirit_n discern_v sin_n and_o so_o be_v conumce_v of_o it_o but_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o renew_a by_o grace_n neither_o can_v he_o hate_v it_o unfeigned_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o part_v with_o it_o upon_o the_o best_a term_n neither_o be_v able_a in_o any_o measure_n to_o forsake_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o true_a ground_n in_o obedience_n and_o love_n unto_o god_n but_o only_o upon_o by-respect_n out_o of_o love_n to_o himself_o he_o may_v so_o leave_v some_o sin_n as_o to_o enchange_v it_o for_o a_o more_o sweet_a and_o profitable_a or_o else_o he_o must_v leave_v it_o because_o ability_n and_o opportunity_n serve_v not_o thereto_o or_o else_o he_o leave_v with_o condition_n to_o resume_v it_o again_o upon_o a_o better_a opportunity_n and_o advantage_n and_o so_o as_o he_o will_v no_o good_a at_o all_o so_o if_o he_o do_v any_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n but_o from_o outward_a respect_n neither_o do_v he_o continue_v therein_o otherwise_o then_o may_v serve_v his_o carnal_a end_n make_v hereby_o amends_n for_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o seek_v to_o further_a and_o cloak_n they_o more_o dangerous_o hereby_o 3._o as_o in_o the_o new_a birth_n though_o there_o be_v a_o faculty_n of_o every_o quality_n &_o power_n yet_o there_o be_v not_o a_o present_a execution_n and_o use_n thereof_o as_o there_o be_v in_o the_o first_o bear_v a_o faculty_n of_o speak_v go_v reason_n etc._n etc._n yet_o no_o present_a use_n thereof_o so_o be_v it_o in_o the_o new_a creature_n though_o by_o the_o spirit_n all_o grace_n be_v begin_v in_o we_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o faculty_n of_o they_o yet_o for_o the_o use_n of_o they_o we_o must_v expect_v in_o those_o season_n when_o they_o may_v best_o serve_v for_o god_n glory_n and_o our_o build_n forward_o in_o christ_n reason_n hereof_o be_v 1._o because_o some_o grace_n arise_v out_o of_o other_o as_o first_o faith_n be_v to_o it_o desire_v to_o the_o practice_n thereof_o yea_o though_o it_o many_o time_n do_v the_o contrary_a yet_o see_v the_o spirit_n and_o word_n work_v by_o contrary_n even_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkness_n yet_o we_o find_v this_o contrary_a work_n in_o leave_v we_o to_o some_o particular_a evil_n to_o sort_n with_o and_o further_o the_o main_a end_n even_o to_o cause_v more_o inward_a abase_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o quicken_a thereof_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o gracious_a rule_n to_o discern_v this_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n yea_o though_o we_o be_v many_o time_n to_o seek_v of_o the_o inward_a bent_n of_o our_o heart_n yet_o as_o hereby_o we_o be_v more_o humble_v in_o ourselves_o and_o so_o send_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n so_o may_v we_o hereby_o also_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n that_o sometime_o it_o be_v insensible_a to_o our_o spirit_n howsoever_o discernible_a by_o the_o spirit_n which_o search_v all_o thing_n yea_o sometime_o must_v be_v discern_v by_o contrary_n that_o still_o we_o may_v live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n and_o see_v the_o word_n though_o it_o work_v diverse_o yet_o most_o wise_o to_o further_a the_o main_a end_n and_o to_o avouch_v the_o freedom_n of_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o also_o by_o this_o diversity_n of_o work_v may_v we_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n and_o so_o still_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o our_o discern_v thereof_o and_o proceed_v therein_o for_o our_o better_a satisfaction_n in_o this_o point_n both_o to_o discern_v more_o clear_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n as_o also_o to_o apprehend_v it_o more_o comfortable_o by_o this_o rule_n of_o compare_v spiritual_a thing_n with_o spiritual_a have_v we_o also_o in_o readiness_n these_o special_a caveat_n and_o direction_n 1._o caveat_n first_o that_o we_o measure_v not_o simple_o our_o estate_n in_o christ_n by_o any_o present_a measure_n of_o grace_n we_o have_v receive_v that_o be_v though_o the_o least_o grace_n in_o we_o in_o truth_n be_v a_o evidence_n of_o our_o engraft_v into_o christ_n yet_o see_v our_o measure_n here_o at_o the_o best_a be_v imperfect_a yea_o sometime_o such_o as_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o discern_v or_o right_o judge_v of_o and_o so_o our_o interest_n in_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v perfect_a so_o it_o be_v also_o a_o deep_a mystery_n such_o as_o our_o shallow_a knowledge_n can_v fathom_v therefore_o our_o imperfect_a and_o short_a mete-wand_n can_v no_o way_n fit_o fathom_v so_o great_a a_o depth_n only_o herein_o be_v our_o comfort_n that_o as_o our_o acceptance_n in_o christ_n make_v we_o gracious_a by_o some_o measure_n and_o fruit_n of_o his_o spirit_n with_o he_o so_o our_o conformity_n hereby_o to_o his_o image_n shall_v own_v we_o unto_o he_o howsoever_o it_o may_v be_v short_a of_o the_o perfect_a pattern_n a_o 2._o caveat_n herein_o be_v that_o see_v there_o be_v diverse_a kind_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n some_o original_n and_o simple_o necessary_a to_o life_n as_o faith_n repentance_n etc._n etc._n other_o consequent_a and_o further_a the_o comfort_n and_o beauty_n thereof_o as_o full_a assurance_n joy_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o must_v not_o measure_v our_o grow_n in_o grace_n by_o these_o late_a which_o be_v not_o always_o visible_a nor_o simple_o necessary_a but_o by_o the_o former_a but_o of_o this_o more_o full_o god_n will_v in_o the_o case_n a_o three_o rule_n of_o discern_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o growth_n be_v according_a to_o those_o several_a calling_n wherein_o god_n have_v place_v we_o that_o so_o we_o may_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o due_a season_n that_o be_v whereas_o every_o christian_a have_v two_o calling_n first_o his_o general_n call_v to_o the_o faith_n as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o second_o his_o particular_a call_n for_o the_o public_a and_o private_a good_a as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n thereof_o both_o these_o as_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o so_o also_o be_v they_o limit_v and_o subordinate_a to_o each_o other_o i_o say_v first_o they_o be_v limit_v in_o themselves_o as_o that_o the_o general_n call_v of_o each_o christian_a be_v first_o limit_v to_o the_o place_n and_o ranke_n he_o enjoy_v in_o the_o church_n wherein_o he_o be_v either_o a_o public_a parson_n to_o the_o prophet_n may_v be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n that_o confusion_n may_v be_v avoid_v and_o unity_n preserve_v as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o teach_v some_o for_o doctrine_n and_o some_o for_o discipline_n some_o for_o exhortation_n and_o some_o for_o relief_n etc._n etc._n or_o else_o he_o be_v a_o private_a person_n fit_a only_a to_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o public_a and_o not_o to_o teach_v and_o yet_o not_o debar_v from_o teach_v his_o family_n in_o private_a the_o fear_n of_o god_n 11._o 1._o cor._n 11._o genes_n 18._o and_o both_o these_o limit_v by_o the_o several_a gift_n bestow_v on_o they_o the_o lord_n require_v no_o more_o than_o he_o give_v and_o limit_v as_o also_o in_o some_o sort_n measure_v by_o the_o opportunity_n and_o success_n therein_o and_o so_o also_o the_o civil_a call_n have_v it_o bound_n in_o itself_o both_o according_a to_o the_o different_a degree_n and_o rank_n of_o man_n the_o wise_a lord_n have_v dispose_v in_o the_o world_n as_o some_o to_o rule_v and_o some_o to_o obey_v as_o also_o answerable_a to_o the_o diverse_a gift_n and_o use_n of_o man_n in_o the_o commonwealth_n according_a to_o which_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o intermeddle_v with_o other_o calling_n and_o so_o also_o according_a to_o their_o ability_n in_o such_o calling_n that_o none_o may_v presume_v above_o what_o be_v meet_v yea_o both_o sanctify_a the_o matter_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o may_v lawful_o employ_v the_o same_o because_o to_o the_o impure_a all_o thing_n be_v impure_a and_o so_o also_o direct_v and_o bound_v in_o the_o manner_n thereof_o even_o so_o to_o use_v these_o thing_n as_o from_o a_o heavenly_a right_n so_o with_o spiritual_a affection_n and_o honest_a mean_n and_o so_o also_o restrain_v we_o herein_o general_n call_v subordinate_n in_o some_o special_a case_n the_o civil_a thereunto_o as_o first_o in_o case_n of_o general_n humiliation_n though_o the_o civil_a be_v lawful_a on_o the_o six_o day_n yet_o upon_o such_o extraordinary_a occasion_n it_o must_v give_v way_n and_o surcease_v to_o signify_v the_o truth_n of_o our_o unworthiness_n as_o not_o fit_a to_o live_v and_o so_o to_o prepare_v of_o charity_n or_o for_o the_o relief_n of_o a_o brother_n in_o sickness_n or_o such_o like_a
with_o such_o bitter_a distress_n these_o as_o they_o may_v be_v partly_o gather_v by_o that_o which_o before_o have_v be_v observe_v concern_v the_o several_a end_n and_o purpose_n of_o god_n therein_o as_o be_v so_o many_o special_a cause_n thereof_o so_o more_o particular_o to_o discover_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n herein_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o condition_n of_o our_o regeneration_n free_a grace_n both_o in_o manifest_v hereby_o that_o he_o be_v not_o bind_v unto_o we_o so_o in_o make_v good_a herein_o his_o faithfulness_n towards_o we_o in_o sustain_v we_o by_o his_o power_n where_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v utter_o forsake_v we_o and_o contrary_a to_o our_o expectation_n relieve_n we_o by_o his_o mercy_n though_o not_o according_a to_o our_o apprehension_n and_o desire_v in_o the_o particular_a yet_o answerable_a to_o his_o most_o gracious_a wisdom_n in_o reserve_v the_o glory_n thereof_o entire_o to_o himself_o and_o also_o answerable_a to_o our_o main_a desire_n to_o fit_v we_o for_o he_o and_o provoke_v we_o to_o hunger_n after_o he_o and_o therefore_o though_o we_o may_v not_o challenge_v our_o god_n for_o leave_v we_o to_o ourselves_o see_v it_o be_v our_o corruption_n that_o immediate_o and_o direct_o cause_v our_o fall_n so_o much_o less_o have_v we_o any_o just_a occasion_n to_o condemn_v his_o mercy_n in_o leave_v we_o to_o ourselves_o see_v he_o do_v so_o only_o leave_v we_o as_o that_o still_o he_o uphold_v we_o by_o his_o power_n and_o will_v no_o further_o leave_v we_o but_o that_o still_o he_o keep_v we_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o so_o by_o the_o power_n thereof_o will_v recover_v we_o again_o and_o turn_v our_o fayling_n to_o our_o great_a increase_n yea_o even_o in_o the_o very_o fail_v so_o work_v in_o we_o by_o his_o spirit_n as_o to_o effect_v a_o increase_n of_o grace_n even_o in_o and_o by_o the_o very_a act_n of_o sin_n for_o though_o he_o never_o forsake_v we_o till_o we_o forsake_v he_o and_o so_o he_o be_v just_a in_o leave_v we_o yet_o be_v his_o mercy_n wonderful_a in_o so_o leave_v we_o for_o a_o while_n that_o we_o may_v forsake_v ourselves_o and_o so_o labour_v yet_o more_o and_o more_o to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v up_o in_o he_o to_o perfection_n for_o the_o further_a clear_n and_o manifestation_n hereof_o know_v we_o that_o our_o god_n both_o command_v the_o spirit_n be_v more_o active_a and_o forcible_a nay_o that_o in_o the_o great_a sounding_n and_o faint_n cause_v by_o the_o suffocate_a of_o the_o spirit_n or_o some_o sudden_a and_o violent_a outward_a accident_n yet_o than_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n retire_v to_o the_o most_o noble_a and_o principal_a part_n the_o heart_n not_o only_o to_o preserve_v themselves_o but_o there_o with_o all_o to_o fortify_v it_o that_o it_o may_v withstand_v and_o overcome_v the_o extremity_n and_o so_o again_o be_v enlarge_v to_o the_o better_a quicken_a of_o the_o body_n and_o sure_o so_o it_o fall_v out_o in_o our_o spiritual_a birth_n that_o not_o only_o outward_a affliction_n prove_v mean_n of_o our_o spiritual_a courage_n but_o usual_o in_o the_o less_o supply_n of_o nature_n there_o appear_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o grace_n yea_o when_o by_o reason_n of_o divine_a desertion_n at_o least_o in_o part_n the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o fail_v we_o outward_o yet_o then_o do_v it_o more_o inward_o sustain_v we_o in_o the_o most_o necessary_a and_o main_a work_n send_v we_o to_o the_o trial_n and_o search_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o so_o confirm_v we_o in_o the_o evidence_n thereof_o yea_o hereby_o increase_n the_o zeal_n thereof_o against_o all_o sin_n by_o experience_n of_o particular_a fayling_n and_o make_v we_o more_o wise_a and_o eager_a to_o prevent_v or_o expel_v the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o judge_v wise_o of_o ourselves_o and_o other_o in_o such_o accident_n that_o seem_v so_o contrary_a to_o flesh_n and_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o issue_v thereof_o comfort_v ourselves_o that_o as_o this_o more_o advance_v the_o free_a mercy_n power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o our_o god_n so_o it_o shall_v also_o much_o further_o and_o encourage_v us._n the_o like_a may_v be_v apply_v in_o that_o other_o fearful_a case_n of_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o sin_n 2._o comfort_n in_o relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n which_o see_v
