upside_o down_o a_o shatter_v and_o break_v asunder_o the_o bond_n between_o rational_a appetite_n and_o the_o first_o good_a a_o disjoint_v and_o unh_v of_o the_o best_a and_o noble_a part_n of_o search_n wherein_o a_o apprehensive_a serious_a heart_n well_o understand_v it_o be_v not_o itself_o to_o be_v the_o supreme_a judg._n how_o bless_v a_o imitation_n may_v there_o here_o be_v of_o the_o bless_a god_n himself_o who_o we_o find_v behold_v his_o six_o day_n work_n and_o lo_o they_o be_v all_o very_a good_a whereupon_o follow_v his_o delightful_a day_n of_o rest_n so_o we_o shall_v in_o some_o degree_n of_o conformity_n to_o he_o find_v our_o work_n to_o be_v in_o that_o sort_n good_a as_o that_o he_o will_v by_o gracious_a indulgence_n accept_v they_o as_o such_o have_v our_o own_o sabbath_n a_o sweet_a and_o peaceful_a rest_n in_o our_o own_o spirit_n though_o we_o can_v pretend_v no_o high_o than_o sincerity_n only_o yet_o how_o sweet_a be_v the_o reflection_n of_o a_o well-instructed_n conscience_n upon_o that_o when_o our_o heart_n reproach_v we_o not_o and_o we_o resolve_v they_o shall_v not_o as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v we_o be_v conscious_a to_o ourselves_o of_o no_o base_a design_n we_o propose_v nothing_o to_o ourselves_o wherein_o we_o apprehend_v cause_n to_o decline_v god_n eye_n we_o walk_v in_o the_o light_n and_o be_v seek_v no_o darkness_n or_o reference_n to_o our_o daily_a affair_n and_o wont_a course_n be_v this_o without_o pleasure_n this_o be_v our_o rejoice_n 12._o say_v the_o apostle_n the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n that_o in_o simplicity_n and_o godly_a sincerity_n not_o with_o fleshly_a wisdom_n but_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n we_o have_v have_v our_o conversation_n etc._n etc._n and_o thus_o to_o converse_v with_o god_n a_o he_o who_o we_o daily_a design_n to_o glorify_v and_o serve_v and_o who_o we_o expect_v daily_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o full_o and_o final_o ere_o it_o be_v long_o to_o enjoy_v be_v certain_o throughout_o a_o way_n of_o pleasantness_n and_o peace_n how_o delectable_a then_o be_v this_o soul-rectifying_a communication_n from_o god_n whereby_o be_v before_o so_o disaffect_v it_o become_v now_o so_o well_o incline_v towards_o he_o in_o all_o these_o respect_n but_o because_o the_o exigency_n of_o the_o case_n do_v require_v by_o reason_n of_o sin_n that_o have_v cut_v off_o the_o intercourse_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o mediator_n to_o open_v the_o way_n and_o renew_v the_o former_a outwear_v friendship_n therefore_o it_o be_v also_o necessary_a that_o so_o the_o soul_n may_v due_o move_v towards_o god_n it_o shall_v be_v right_o frame_v and_o dispose_v also_o towards_o he_o we_o be_v therefore_o to_o consider_v too_o how_o delectable_a this_o communication_n must_v be_v as_o it_o aright_o dispose_v the_o heart_n towards_o christ_n our_o way_n to_o god_n for_o towards_o he_o we_o must_v understand_v it_o to_o have_v be_v most_o obstinate_o and_o inflexible_o averse_a and_o that_o therefore_o a_o mighty_a communication_n of_o power_n be_v necessary_a to_o set_v it_o right_n here_o unto_o that_o part_n of_o religion_n which_o be_v natural_a there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o a_o advantage_n beforehand_o as_o that_o there_o be_v a_o old_a foundation_n to_o build_v upon_o there_o be_v some_o notion_n of_o god_n leave_v not_o only_o concern_v his_o existence_n but_o his_o nature_n and_o attribute_n many_o of_o they_o and_o from_o the_o apprehension_n what_o he_o be_v it_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n discernible_a what_o he_o shall_v have_v be_v and_o aught_o yet_o to_o be_v towards_o he_o and_o from_o thence_o many_o check_n and_o rebuke_n of_o conscience_n wherein_o it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v otherwise_o so_o that_o here_o be_v somewhat_o in_o nature_n to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o as_o to_o this_o part_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o to_o that_o part_n which_o respect_v the_o mediator_n this_o be_v a_o frame_n whole_o to_o be_v raise_v up_o from_o the_o ground_n there_o be_v no_o principle_n immediate_o and_o direct_o incline_v to_o take_v part_n with_o the_o gospel_n but_o all_o to_o be_v implant_v anew_o the_o way_n that_o god_n will_v take_v to_o bring_v back_o soul_n to_o he_o be_v so_o infinite_o above_o all_o human_a thought_n and_o therefore_o though_o to_o a_o consider_v pagan_a it_o will_v not_o sound_v strange_o that_o god_n ought_v to_o be_v trust_v fear_a love_a etc._n etc._n yet_o even_o to_o such_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n be_v foolishness_n beside_o that_o this_o way_n of_o deal_n with_o man_n be_v not_o only_o unknown_a and_o unimaginable_a to_o they_o not_o so_o much_o as_o once_o think_v of_o or_o to_o be_v guest_n at_o but_o the_o tendency_n and_o aspect_n of_o it_o when_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v make_v know_v be_v such_o as_o that_o it_o can_v not_o but_o find_v the_o temper_n of_o man_n spirit_n most_o strong_o opposite_a not_o mere_o ignorant_a but_o prejudice_v and_o high_o disaffect_v for_o this_o course_n most_o direct_o tend_v to_o take_v man_n quite_o off_o from_o their_o old_a bottom_n to_o stoop_v and_o humble_a and_o even_o bring_v they_o to_o nothing_o to_o stain_v the_o pride_n of_o their_o glory_n and_o lay_v they_o down_o in_o the_o dust_n as_o abject_a wretch_n in_o themselves_o fit_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o be_v trample_v on_o and_o crush_v by_o the_o foot_n of_o divine_a revenge_n suppose_v a_o man_n to_o have_v admit_v a_o conviction_n from_o the_o light_n of_o his_o own_o mind_n and_o conscience_n that_o he_o be_v a_o sinner_n and_o have_v offend_v his_o maker_n incur_v his_o just_a displeasure_n and_o make_v himself_o liable_a to_o his_o punish_a justice_n it_o will_v yet_o have_v be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o make_v he_o believe_v it_o altogether_o impossible_a to_o he_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o remedy_v the_o matter_n and_o restore_v himself_o to_o divine_a favour_n and_o acceptance_n he_o will_v natural_o be_v incline_v to_o think_v why_o admit_v the_o case_n be_v so_o he_o shall_v easy_o find_v out_o a_o way_n to_o make_v god_n amends_o he_o will_v recount_v with_o himself_o all_o his_o own_o natural_a excellency_n and_o think_v himself_o very_o capable_a of_o do_v some_o great_a thing_n that_o shall_v more_o than_o expiate_v his_o offence_n and_o make_v recompense_n abundant_o for_o any_o wrong_n that_o he_o have_v do_v but_o when_o the_o gospel_n shall_v come_v and_o tell_v he_o he_o have_v deserve_v eternal_a wrath_n that_o his_o sin_n be_v inexpiable_a but_o by_o everlasting_a who_o god_n require_v it_o to_o unite_v for_o this_o very_a purpose_n this_o can_v but_o add_v unspeakable_o to_o the_o delightfulness_n of_o this_o transaction_n and_o of_o this_o effusion_n of_o affection_n devote_v itself_o to_o he_o consent_v to_o his_o government_n submit_v its_o neck_n and_o shoulder_n to_o his_o yoke_n and_o burden_n say_v to_o he_o with_o a_o ungainsay_n heart_n as_o its_o full_a sense_n now_o thou_o lord_n of_o my_o life_n and_o hope_n who_o have_v so_o long_o strive_v with_o i_o so_o oft_o and_o earnest_o press_v i_o hereto_o so_o various_o deal_v with_o i_o any_o man_n and_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n act_v by_o a_o spirit_n of_o love_n 13._o that_o suffer_v long_o and_o be_v kind_a that_o envy_v not_o that_o vaunt_v not_o itself_o be_v not_o puff_v up_o do_v not_o behave_v itself_o unseemly_a seek_v not_o its_o own_o be_v not_o easy_o provoke_v think_v no_o evil_a rejoice_v not_o in_o iniquity_n but_o rejoice_v in_o the_o truth_n that_o bear_v all_o you_o think_v that_o horrid_a and_o resolve_v to_o own_o something_o or_o other_o of_o religion_n will_v you_o here_o use_v your_o understanding_n and_o consider_v be_v it_o indeed_o so_o horrid_a a_o thing_n to_o disavow_v all_o religion_n and_o what_o be_v it_o better_a to_o pretend_v to_o it_o to_o no_o purpose_n you_o find_v the_o religion_n be_v all_o but_o show_v and_o shadow_n mere_a empty_a vanity_n and_o mockery_n which_o be_v not_o delightful_a if_o you_o will_v not_o choose_v a_o better_a because_o it_o be_v delightful_a as_o you_o be_v not_o advise_v to_o do_v for_o that_o as_o your_o chief_a reason_n yet_o at_o least_o choose_v that_o which_o be_v so_o because_o it_o be_v in_o other_o more_o considerable_a respect_n eligible_a as_o be_v most_o honourable_a and_o please_a you_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o spend_v so_o considerable_a a_o part_n of_o the_o time_n of_o your_o life_n as_o the_o exercise_n of_o your_o religion_n will_v take_v up_o in_o do_v that_o as_o be_v needless_a unwarrantable_a modesty_n as_o to_o account_v you_o be_v of_o a_o low_a rank_n than_o all_o that_o ever_o become_v intimate_o acquaint_v with_o the_o hide_a delight_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n at_o least_o you_o be_v as_o capable_a of_o be_v think_v worthy_a as_o any_o for_o his_o sake_n upon_o who_o account_n all_o must_v be_v accept_v therefore_o think_v with_o yourselves_o why_o shall_v i_o not_o labour_v to_o attain_v as_o far_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n as_o this_o or_o that_o neighbour_n of_o i_o what_o shall_v hinder_v who_o restrain_v or_o forbid_v i_o but_o to_o the_o discourse_n of_o delight_v in_o god_n under_o the_o other_o more_o strict_a notion_n of_o it_o viz._n as_o the_o very_a act_n of_o delight_n have_v its_o direct_a exercise_n upon_o himself_o so_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v this_o delight_n not_o as_o a_o thing_n some_o way_n adherent_a to_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o a_o distinct_a duty_n of_o itself_o that_o require_v a_o solemn_a and_o direct_a application_n of_o ourselves_o thereunto_o for_o though_o it_o seem_v little_a to_o be_v doubt_v but_o there_o be_v in_o this_o precept_n a_o part_n of_o these_o two_o sort_n do_v comprehend_v upon_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o of_o these_o account_n wherein_o it_o be_v fit_a we_o shall_v plead_v with_o man_n for_o his_o sake_n and_o their_o own_o and_o 1._o with_o the_o former_a sort_n they_o who_o be_v altogether_o disaffect_v to_o god_n alienate_v and_o enemy_n in_o their_o mind_n through_o wicked_a work_n and_o except_v such_o as_o deny_v his_o be_v with_o who_o we_o shall_v not_o here_o concern_v ourselves_o at_o the_o utmost_a distance_n from_o delight_v in_o he_o and_o as_o to_o such_o our_o expostulation_n shall_v aim_v at_o his_o own_o rule_n and_o law_n set_v about_o they_o so_o that_o we_o can_v prejudice_v or_o empair_v they_o but_o by_o break_v through_o his_o enclosure_n our_o great_a care_n and_o study_v levities_n as_o well_o as_o from_o all_o earthly_a impurity_n and_o only_o grow_v and_o flourish_v in_o a_o soul_n that_o be_v dead_a to_o this_o world_n and_o alive_a to_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ._n see_v then_o to_o the_o usual_a temper_n of_o your_o spirit_n and_o do_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o that_o you_o hope_v the_o great_a renew_v change_n do_v sometime_o pass_v upon_o it_o and_o that_o therefore_o your_o case_n be_v good_a and_o safe_a and_o you_o may_v now_o take_v your_o ease_n and_o liberty_n but_o be_v intent_n upon_o this_o to_o get_v into_o a_o confirm_a grow_a this_o end_n not_o have_v this_o knowledge_n when_o you_o will_v set_v yourselves_o serious_o to_o think_v on_o god_n you_o be_v lose_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o know_v not_o which_o way_n to_o turn_v yourselves_o and_o have_v it_o you_o will_v be_v as_o much_o stranger_n to_o delight_n in_o he_o if_o you_o let_v your_o knowledge_n lie_v bind_v up_o in_o dead_a and_o spiritless_a notion_n and_o labour_v not_o to_o have_v it_o turn_v into_o active_a life_n and_o fervent_a love_n by_o the_o agitation_n of_o your_o work_a thought_n by_o your_o muse_v this_o fire_n must_v be_v kindle_v do_v you_o suppose_v it_o possible_a to_o delight_v in_o god_n and_o not_o think_v of_o he_o if_o god_n be_v the_o solace_n and_o joy_n of_o your_o soul_n sure_o it_o must_v be_v god_n remember_v and_o mind_v much_o not_o neglect_v and_o forget_v my_o soul_n say_v the_o psalmist_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v as_o with_o marrow_n and_o fatness_n 63._o and_o my_o mouth_n shall_v praise_v thou_o with_o joyful_a lip_n when_o i_o remember_v thou_o on_o my_o bed_n and_o meditate_v on_o thou_o in_o the_o night-watche_n 34._o and_o he_o at_o the_o same_o time_n say_v his_o meditation_n of_o he_o shall_v excuse_v your_o slothful_a neglect_n that_o you_o can_v command_v your_o own_o thought_n the_o thing_n itself_o be_v unquestionable_o true_a and_o that_o you_o be_v not_o of_o yourselves_o sufficient_a to_o think_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a as_o of_o yourselves_o and_o so_o you_o may_v true_o enough_o say_v that_o you_o can_v think_v any_o thought_n at_o all_o without_o god_n or_o so_o much_o as_o draw_v a_o breath_n only_o as_o beside_o your_o natural_a dependence_n on_o god_n for_o the_o support_n of_o your_o natural_a life_n and_o be_v there_o must_v be_v that_o course_n take_v and_o those_o thing_n do_v by_o which_o in_o a_o orderly_a course_n of_o providence_n you_o may_v live_v so_o for_o the_o maintain_n of_o your_o spiritual_a life_n which_o very_o much_o stand_v in_o delight_n and_o joy_n in_o god_n you_o must_v join_v a_o spiritual_a dependence_n for_o that_o special_a influence_n and_o concurrence_n which_o be_v necessary_a hereto_o with_o the_o do_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o by_o god_n appointment_n and_o prescription_n be_v to_o serve_v this_o end_n they_o who_o complain_v therefore_o they_o can_v attain_v to_o it_o to_o delight_v in_o god_n or_o their_o delight_n in_o he_o be_v faint_a and_o languish_a while_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o use_v no_o endeavour_n to_o bend_v and_o direct_v their_o thought_n towards_o he_o do_v make_v as_o idle_a a_o complaint_n as_o he_o that_o shall_v say_v he_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a strave_a condition_n and_o nothing_o nourish_v he_o who_o want_v nothing_o suitable_a for_o he_o be_v so_o wretched_o slothful_a that_o he_o will_v be_v at_o no_o pain_n to_o prepare_v or_o so_o much_o as_o eat_v and_o chew_v his_o own_o necessary_a food_n you_o may_v not_o imagine_v you_o have_v
