from_o whence_o arrive_v a_o evil_a common_o observable_a in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n that_o many_o soul_n live_v in_o a_o good_a observance_n labour_n much_o and_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o number_n of_o the_o virtue_n yet_o make_v little_a or_o no_o progress_n towards_o the_o perfection_n that_o they_o desire_v and_o never_o arrive_v at_o the_o end_n which_o they_o propose_v to_o themselves_o if_o a_o reason_n may_v be_v give_v for_o a_o misfortune_n so_o general_a it_o appear_v that_o this_o can_v proceed_v from_o any_o thing_n but_o that_o such_o soul_n seek_v not_o god_n pure_o nor_o resign_v themselves_o to_o his_o conduct_n to_o follow_v with_o simplicity_n and_o fidelity_n the_o order_n which_o god_n have_v establish_v on_o they_o but_o with_o a_o respect_n to_o themselves_o desirous_a to_o rise_v and_o arrive_v to_o a_o estate_n whereunto_o god_n do_v not_o call_v they_o or_o they_o refuse_v to_o labour_v with_o fidelity_n to_o attain_v that_o whereunto_o god_n call_v they_o they_o regard_v not_o god_n they_o work_v not_o by_o grace_n nor_o seek_v it_o where_o it_o be_v but_o trust_v in_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o work_v not_o with_o submission_n to_o grace_v itself_o they_o seek_v not_o in_o jesus_n christ_n strength_n and_o power_n to_o work_v for_o they_o think_v not_o of_o it_o be_v so_o blind_a that_o they_o rely_v upon_o themselves_o and_o by_o secret_a esteem_n of_o their_o own_o action_n and_o labour_n easy_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o there_o be_v virtue_n where_o none_o be_v and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o some_o estate_n of_o perfection_n when_o they_o be_v very_o far_o from_o it_o confide_v in_o their_o own_o good_a will_n or_o in_o a_o simple_a intention_n which_o they_o think_v good_a believe_v this_o enough_o for_o they_o they_o neglect_v or_o despise_v all_o the_o rest_n which_o be_v of_o great_a importance_n now_o to_o remedy_v this_o evil_a which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v neglect_v you_o must_v practice_v what_o i_o shall_v tell_v you_o 1._o we_o must_v be_v in_o will_n and_o perpetual_a desire_n of_o god_n in_o a_o resolution_n not_o to_o love_v or_o act_n but_o by_o grace_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n this_o desire_n be_v a_o disposition_n little_o know_v yet_o more_o important_a than_o it_o seem_v for_o god_n will_v be_v desire_v and_o take_v pleasure_n to_o see_v a_o soul_n thirst_n and_o run_v after_o he_o we_o see_v that_o he_o defer_v his_o great_a mercy_n and_o give_v not_o his_o son_n to_o the_o world_n till_o 4000_o year_n after_o man_n have_v desire_v themselves_o too_o much_o of_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o tie_v themselves_o to_o divers_a practice_n whereof_o they_o make_v use_v they_o tie_v also_o their_o happiness_n thereto_o if_o you_o demand_v whence_o it_o come_v that_o they_o have_v not_o solid_a virtue_n it_o be_v easy_o perceive_v it_o be_v because_o they_o amuse_v themselves_o much_o in_o unprofitable_a thing_n trifle_n and_o
