express_a image_n of_o the_o father_n person_n which_o plain_o say_v that_o the_o father_n consider_v as_o distinguish_v from_o the_o son_n be_v a_o person_n and_o subsist_v and_o that_o the_o son_n as_o distinguish_v from_o the_o father_n and_o as_o so_o lively_a and_o express_o represent_v his_o person_n must_v be_v a_o person_n also_o have_v this_o from_o the_o father_n and_o what_o be_v say_v of_o the_o father_n and_o son_n must_v also_o be_v true_a of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o be_v god_n equal_a with_o both_o yet_o different_a from_o they_o both_o as_o they_o differ_v from_o each_o other_o though_o not_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o same_o incommunicable_a property_n yet_o he_o who_o proceed_v must_v differ_v from_o those_o from_o who_o he_o proceed_v as_o he_o who_o be_v beget_v must_v differ_v from_o he_o that_o beget_v he_o for_o their_o operation_n we_o may_v find_v here_o that_o in_o some_o thing_n they_o concur_v joint_o yet_o some_o way_n different_o some_o thing_n again_o be_v attribute_v to_o one_o which_o can_v be_v to_o another_o as_o their_o personal_a property_n the_o son_n be_v beget_v and_o not_o the_o father_n or_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o he_o be_v allanerly_a the_o son_n the_o father_n beget_v and_o the_o spirit_n proceed_v these_o be_v call_v their_o personal_a property_n and_o their_o work_n ad_fw-la intra_fw-la or_o among_o or_o in_o reference_n to_o themselves_o of_o this_o kind_n be_v the_o incarnation_n of_o the_o son_n which_o can_v neither_o be_v say_v of_o the_o father_n nor_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n again_o in_o thing_n son_n the_o son_n be_v send_v the_o spirit_n from_o the_o father_n etc._n etc._n do_v declare_v joh._n 14.26_o and_o 16.7_o gal._n 4.6_o to_o the_o three_o this_o truth_n concern_v the_o bless_a and_o glorious_a trinity_n be_v so_o often_o insist_v on_o here_o and_o come_v so_o near_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n himself_o it_o can_v but_o be_v exceed_o necessary_a for_o christian_n to_o be_v through_o in_o the_o faith_n thereof_o yet_o it_o be_v question_v of_o late_a whether_o it_o be_v to_o be_v account_v a_o fundamental_a point_n of_o faith_n or_o not_o i_o say_v this_o of_o late_o be_v question_v by_o socinus_n and_o the_o favourer_n of_o a_o boundless_a untolerable_a toleration_n for_o of_o old_a it_o be_v most_o sacred_o receive_v as_o such_o among_o the_o ancient_n as_o the_o creed_n that_o be_v call_v apostolic_a nicene_n and_o that_o of_o athanasius_n do_v manifest_a but_o this_o engine_n the_o devil_n drive_v first_o to_o make_v the_o most_o necessary_a truth_n indifferent_a that_o then_o he_o may_v the_o more_o easy_o engage_v opposer_n to_o quarrel_v the_o very_a truth_n of_o they_o itself_o but_o we_o conceive_v whatever_o it_o be_v of_o old_a before_o christ_n yet_o now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v look_v on_o not_o only_o as_o a_o truth_n which_o be_v clear_a from_o the_o word_n but_o also_o as_o a_o fundamental_a truth_n which_o be_v shake_v will_v overturn_v christianity_n and_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v in_o his_o gospel_n this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v extend_v to_o a_o rigid_a degree_n of_o knowledge_n in_o this_o wonderful_a mystery_n but_o to_o so_o much_o clearness_n in_o this_o truth_n from_o the_o word_n as_o may_v be_v a_o ground_n to_o faith_n in_o the_o thing_n itself_o and_o that_o this_o be_v necessary_a as_o a_o fundamental_a we_o think_v arise_v clear_o from_o these_o three_o ground_n 1._o that_o truth_n without_o which_o the_o true_a god_n can_v be_v take_v up_o believe_v in_o and_o worship_v be_v a_o fundamental_a truth_n but_o this_o truth_n of_o the_o trinity_n of_o person_n and_o unity_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v such_o that_o without_o it_o that_o god_n which_o be_v propose_v in_o the_o word_n and_o be_v the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o the_o object_n of_o all_o worship_n can_v neither_o be_v take_v up_o believe_v in_o nor_o worship_v right_o ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n because_o the_o true_a god_n be_v one_o and_o yet_o three_o person_n and_o as_o such_o have_v propose_v himself_o to_o be_v know_v and_o worship_v 2._o that_o truth_n without_o which_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n will_v be_v overturn_v be_v fundamental_a but_o this_o be_v such_o for_o by_o take_v away_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o trinity_n they_o take_v away_o the_o godhead_n and_o personality_n of_o the_o mediator_n and_o so_o do_v enervat_fw-la his_o satisfaction_n and_o as_o on_o the_o former_a account_n the_o true_a god_n be_v otherwise_o conceive_v than_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o so_o in_o this_o respect_n the_o mediator_n be_v make_v a_o quite_o other_o thing_n and_o can_v any_o thing_n be_v fundamental_a if_o this_o be_v not_o 3._o the_o way_n that_o god_n have_v lay_v down_o in_o his_o worship_n require_v this_o see_v in_o baptism_n there_o be_v particular_a and_o express_a mention_v of_o these_o three_o the_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n as_o the_o superior_a to_o who_o they_o that_o be_v christian_a soldier_n shall_v be_v lift_v and_o enrol_v and_o so_o we_o may_v account_v of_o all_o after-worship_n see_v god_n require_v we_o to_o honour_v the_o son_n as_o we_o honour_v the_o father_n and_o see_v these_o three_o equal_o witness_n from_o heaven_n 1_o joh._n 5._o the_o father_n word_n and_o spirit_n all_o which_o three_o be_v one_o can_v their_o testimony_n be_v receive_v as_o of_o three_o or_o can_v they_o be_v account_v as_o one_o god_n without_o this_o and_o yet_o there_o can_v neither_o be_v one_o in_o faith_n engage_v unto_o in_o baptism_n or_o one_o who_o testimony_n we_o may_v receive_v but_o he_o who_o be_v god_n and_o can_v any_o think_v but_o its_o necessary_a for_o a_o christian_a and_o that_o fundamental_o to_o know_v to_o who_o they_o be_v devote_v who_o they_o be_v to_o worship_n who_o testimony_n it_o be_v that_o they_o receive_v who_o operation_n they_o feel_v who_o they_o be_v to_o make_v use_n of_o &_o c_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o know_v the_o trinity_n of_o person_n in_o that_o one_o godhead_n it_o may_v be_v the_o exercise_n of_o some_o tender_a soul_n that_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o apprehend_v this_o object_n right_o when_o they_o come_v to_o worship_n and_o that_o often_o they_o be_v disquiet_v while_o their_o mind_n be_v unstable_a concern_v this_o there_o be_v need_v here_o to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o what_o may_v satisfy_v we_o as_o to_o the_o object_n in_o itself_o and_o what_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o we_o in_o direct_v of_o our_o worship_n to_o that_o object_n if_o we_o take_v up_o god_n as_o in_o himself_o here_o be_v a_o depth_n that_o can_v be_v search_v out_o to_o perfection_n he_o be_v broad_a than_o the_o sea_n who_o can_v know_v he_o high_o than_o the_o heaven_n what_o can_v we_o do_v job_n 11.8_o but_o yet_o we_o have_v foot_v in_o his_o word_n how_o to_o come_v before_o this_o god_n with_o fear_n reverence_n holy_a admiration_n etc._n etc._n and_o such_o affection_n and_o qualification_n as_o a_o true_a worshipper_n that_o worship_v in_o spirit_n ought_v to_o have_v and_o in_o this_o the_o pure_a worshipper_n who_o believe_v this_o truth_n of_o one_o infinite_a god_n and_o three_o person_n aught_o to_o be_v take_v up_o rather_o that_o they_o may_v be_v suitable_a in_o their_o worship_v and_o have_v become_a effect_n on_o their_o own_o heart_n than_o to_o be_v disquiet_v themselves_o by_o pore_v too_o curious_o on_o the_o object_n worship_v except_o in_o so_o far_o as_o may_v serve_v to_o transform_v the_o heart_n into_o a_o likeness_n to_o he_o and_o it_o be_v not_o aim_v to_o comprehend_v the_o mysteriousness_n and_o manner_n of_o these_o incomprehensible_a mystery_n that_o do_v work_v this_o but_o the_o real_a through_o and_o near_o impression_n of_o the_o general_a which_o be_v reveal_v clear_o in_o his_o word_n we_o will_v therefore_o commend_v these_o three_o in_o worship_n 1._o that_o folk_n will_v satisfy_v themselves_o in_o the_o general_a with_o the_o solid_a faith_n

the_o true_a nature_n of_o baptism_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o have_v continue_v not_o to_o believe_v the_o same_o as_o they_o be_v before_o he_o do_v it_o or_o that_o we_o can_v be_v so_o now_o have_v his_o lesson_n to_o they_o for_o our_o instruction_n yet_o second_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o person_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v not_o intend_v there_o but_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o often_o get_v that_o name_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o that_o place_n be_v such_o as_o be_v communicate_v to_o believer_n and_o such_o as_o these_o afterward_o do_v receive_v as_o from_o ver_fw-la 2._o and_o 6._o be_v clear_a now_o there_o be_v great_a odds_o betwixt_o the_o necessity_n of_o distinctnesse_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o these_o gift_n and_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o who_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v communicate_v by_o the_o lay_n on_o of_o hand_n except_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o gift_n this_o place_n therefore_o do_v not_o meet_v the_o conclusion_n former_o lay_v down_o which_o be_v in_o reference_n to_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o and_o not_o to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o gift_n these_o general_n be_v grant_v there_o do_v arise_v from_o this_o practice_n of_o john_n several_a question_n concern_v the_o object_n of_o divine_a worship_n which_o upon_o this_o occasion_n it_o may_v be_v be_v not_o unworthy_a to_o be_v more_o particular_o consider_v so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o place_n call_v for_o and_o do_v become_v our_o scope_n as_o first_o we_o see_v in_o this_o prayer_n john_n do_v distinct_o name_v all_o the_o three_o bless_a person_n for_o their_o instruction_n and_o consolation_n to_o who_o he_o send_v this_o message_n second_o when_o he_o name_v the_o son_n he_o do_v name_v he_o by_o such_o title_n as_o agree_v to_o he_o only_o as_o mediator_n yea_o and_o in_o this_o song_n ver_fw-la 6._o do_v respect_n that_o particular_o which_o be_v only_o applicable_a to_o he_o as_o man_n and_o as_o mediator_n to_o make_v they_o welcome_v it_o the_o more_o hearty_o and_o thereby_o also_o the_o peculiar_a thanksgiving_n unto_o the_o son_n consider_v under_o such_o designation_n as_o express_v his_o wonderful_a love_n that_o appear_v in_o his_o suffering_n which_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o the_o father_n or_o spirit_n which_o be_v indeed_o divine_a worship_n be_v the_o same_o which_o be_v here_o give_v to_o the_o father_n and_o spirit_n all_o which_o give_v occasion_n to_o inquire_v in_o these_o four_o 1._o concern_v the_o object_n of_o divine_a worship_n in_o general_n 2._o in_o what_o respect_n it_o be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o the_o mediator_n 3._o in_o what_o form_n petition_n may_v be_v direct_v to_o he_o or_o if_o in_o any_o peculiar_a form_n 4._o why_o the_o mediator_n christ_n be_v so_o much_o and_o so_o warm_o under_o these_o consideration_n of_o his_o incarnation_n and_o suffering_n insist_v upon_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n and_o what_o may_v encourage_v and_o help_v in_o the_o improve_n of_o those_o ground_n these_o thing_n be_v deipth_n be_v rather_o to_o be_v admire_v and_o believe_v in_o in_o the_o general_a so_o far_o as_o we_o see_v clear_a in_o this_o precedent_n than_o curious_o to_o be_v pry_v into_o yet_o that_o they_o go_v not_o altogether_o without_o answer_n we_o shall_v lay_v down_o some_o general_n in_o reference_n to_o all_o these_o which_o will_v yield_v some_o practical_a and_o comfortable_a conclusion_n to_o the_o first_o we_o say_v 1._o god_n be_v the_o alone_a object_n of_o divine_a worship_n and_o there_o be_v no_o object_n thereof_o but_o god_n because_o there_o be_v none_o who_o have_v these_o infinite_a attribute_n and_o excellency_n which_o be_v requisite_a in_o the_o object_n of_o divine_a worship_n but_o god_n such_o as_o omnisciencie_n omnipotency_n infinitness_n supreme_a majesty_n glory_n etc._n etc._n from_o which_o to_o speak_v so_o result_v adorability_n a_o essential_a attribute_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n as_o immutability_n and_o eternity_n be_v he_o be_v adorable_a because_o infinite_a immense_a omniscient_a etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v communicate_v to_o any_o other_o more_o than_o these_o incommunicable_a property_n can_v be_v and_o yet_o none_o can_v be_v worship_v who_o be_v not_o so_o to_o speak_v adorable_a 2._o there_o be_v but_o one_o kind_n of_o divine_a worship_n to_o wit_n that_o which_o be_v supreme_a and_o become_v this_o infinite_a majesty_n of_o god_n and_o in_o a_o word_n that_o which_o be_v require_v in_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o law_n as_o that_o which_o be_v competent_a to_o this_o glorious_a excellent_a god_n and_o this_o follow_v on_o the_o former_a for_o if_o there_o be_v but_o one_o object_n there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o manner_n of_o worship_n therefore_o in_o scripture_n to_o worship_n god_n be_v always_o oppose_v to_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o other_o and_o to_o the_o admit_v of_o any_o worship_n which_o be_v not_o competent_a to_o god_n as_o revel_v 19.9_o 10_o and_o 22.9_o 3._o although_o there_o be_v three_o person_n of_o the_o glorious_a godhead_n and_o all_o be_v to_o be_v worship_v yet_o there_o be_v not_o three_o object_n of_o worship_n but_o one_o nor_o three_o kind_n of_o worship_n not_o three_o object_n because_o these_o three_o person_n be_v the_o same_o one_o infinite_a god_n who_o be_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n for_o first_o though_o the_o three_o person_n be_v real_o distinct_a each_o from_o other_o yet_o none_o of_o they_o be_v real_o distinct_a from_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o godhead_n therefore_o the_o father_n be_v that_o same_o object_n of_o worship_n with_o the_o son_n because_o that_o same_o god_n and_o second_o though_o the_o father_n be_v infinite_a and_o the_o son_n infinite_a etc._n etc._n yet_o there_o be_v not_o two_o infinitness_n but_o the_o same_o infinitness_n and_o immenseness_n that_o which_o be_v the_o father_n be_v the_o son_n also_o because_o these_o be_v essential_a property_n and_o so_o common_a to_o all_o the_o person_n and_o therefore_o though_o their_o personal_a property_n be_v distinct_a yet_o their_o essential_a attribute_n be_v common_a they_o be_v not_o distinct_a object_n but_o the_o same_o one_o object_n see_v still_o in_o worship_n respect_n must_v be_v have_v to_o their_o essential_a attribute_n and_o so_o to_o the_o godhead_n which_o be_v common_a to_o all_o and_o therefore_o consequent_o to_o they_o as_o they_o be_v one_o object_n it_o be_v the_o deity_n which_o be_v one_o that_o be_v the_o formal_a object_n of_o worship_n and_o though_o sometime_o these_o three_o person_n be_v name_v together_o as_o here_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o to_o propose_v they_o as_o distinct_a object_n but_o to_o show_v who_o this_o one_o object_n god_n be_v to_o wit_n the_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n three_o person_n of_o the_o same_o one_o indivisible_a godhead_n hence_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o godhead_n be_v inculcate_v for_o this_o end_n the_o lord_n thy_o god_n o_o israel_n be_v one_o lord._n from_o which_o it_o follow_v 1._o that_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o worshipper_n be_v not_o to_o be_v distract_v in_o seek_v to_o comprehend_v or_o order_n in_o his_o thought_n three_o distinct_a person_n as_o distinct_a object_n of_o worship_n but_o to_o conceive_v reverent_o of_o one_o infinite_a god_n who_o be_v three_o person_n 2._o that_o whatever_o person_n be_v name_v he_o be_v not_o to_o think_v that_o the_o other_o be_v less_o worship_v but_o that_o in_o one_o act_n he_o worship_n that_o one_o god_n and_o so_o the_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n 3._o that_o by_o name_v one_o person_n after_o he_o have_v name_v a_o other_o suppose_v he_o name_v the_o father_n at_o first_o and_o afterward_o the_o son_n he_o do_v not_o vary_v the_o object_n of_o worship_n as_o if_o he_o be_v pray_v to_o a_o other_o than_o former_o but_o that_o still_o it_o be_v the_o same_o one_o god_n 4._o because_o our_o imagination_n
thereof_o without_o descend_v to_o particular_a conception_n or_o notion_n concern_v the_o person_n of_o the_o bless_a godhead_n this_o particularness_n be_v often_o that_o which_o both_o confuse_v the_o mind_n and_o disquiet_v the_o conscience_n and_o can_v but_o do_v so_o in_o those_o who_o will_v be_v at_o the_o look_v upon_o god_n immediate_o here_o without_o make_v use_n of_o the_o expression_n title_n name_n etc._n etc._n whereby_o he_o have_v manifest_v himself_o to_o we_o and_o wherein_o we_o conceive_v it_o be_v safe_a to_o rest_v and_o to_o bound_v all_o our_o curiosity_n within_o those_o for_o they_o must_v be_v the_o most_o solid_a notion_n of_o god_n which_o himself_o have_v catch_v thus_o exod._n 33_o and_o 34._o the_o lord_n do_v answer_v moses_n his_o desire_n of_o see_v his_o glory_n by_o show_v he_o his_o goodness_n in_o the_o proclaim_v of_o his_o attribute_n to_o he_o that_o be_v manifest_v in_o his_o word_n thereby_o teach_v man_n to_o conceive_v of_o god_n according_a as_o he_o have_v reveal_v himself_o in_o his_o word_n in_o the_o plain_a and_o comprehensive_a attribute_n that_o describe_v his_o nature_n wherein_o god_n goodness_n be_v sufficient_o hold_v forth_o to_o sinner_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o sufficient_a manifestation_n of_o god_n to_o they_o here_o without_o dive_v immediate_o into_o his_o essence_n which_o can_v no_o otherways_o be_v manifest_v to_o moses_n than_o by_o that_o proclamation_n 2._o we_o will_v beware_v of_o form_v idea_n representation_n or_o shape_n of_o that_o one_o god_n and_o three_o worship_v the_o father_n the_o son_n and_o the_o spirit_n but_o we_o do_v not_o worship_v the_o father_n or_o the_o son_n or_o the_o spirit_n as_o if_o he_o who_o be_v not_o name_v be_v less_o worship_v than_o he_o who_o be_v name_v and_o see_v the_o son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o same_o god_n with_o the_o father_n the_o former_a ground_n be_v lay_v it_o be_v all_o one_o thing_n what_o ever_o person_n be_v name_v though_o in_o scripture_n sometime_o respect_n be_v have_v to_o their_o order_n of_o subsist_v and_o operate_n and_o so_o the_o father_n be_v only_o name_v sometime_o to_o be_v the_o ground_n upon_o and_o by_o which_o we_o have_v access_n to_o god_n and_o so_o the_o son_n only_o be_v name_v now_o by_o what_o be_v say_v it_o do_v also_o appear_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n may_v be_v express_o pray_v unto_o as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n although_o it_o be_v not_o so_o usual_a in_o scripture_n because_o of_o the_o reason_n former_o hint_v same_o god_n with_o the_o son_n and_o infer_v a_o divide_a conception_n of_o the_o most_o simple_a essence_n of_o the_o godhead_n which_o be_v the_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n assert_v 5._o therefore_o when_o all_o be_v consider_v although_o we_o will_v not_o condemn_v it_o simple_o yet_o we_o think_v it_o more_o fit_a to_o abstain_v from_o such_o formal_a expression_n or_o at_o least_o to_o be_v spare_v therein_o especial_o in_o public_a because_o 1._o so_o it_o be_v difficult_a to_o preserve_v that_o unity_n in_o the_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n which_o shall_v be_v for_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o red_a thing_n in_o practice_n as_o distinction_n may_v be_v give_v in_o doctrinal_a debate_n and_o conclusion_n and_o shall_v soul_n hazard_v on_o what_o may_v confuse_v themselves_o i_o say_v especial_o in_o public_a or_o with_o other_o because_o if_o it_o be_v difficult_a to_o keep_v our_o own_o imagination_n stay_v in_o such_o expression_n it_o will_v be_v more_o difficult_a to_o red_a other_o man_n imagination_n consider_v what_o ignorance_n and_o vanity_n usual_o do_v accompany_v many_o 2._o there_o be_v no_o such_o form_n in_o scripture_n even_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n when_o the_o mediator_n be_v pray_v unto_o and_o it_o be_v safe_a we_o shall_v follow_v these_o that_o have_v go_v before_o we_o he_o be_v indeed_o pray_v unto_o consider_v as_o mediator_n but_o still_o so_o as_o the_o thing_n pray_v for_o be_v expect_v from_o himself_o as_o well_o as_o to_o be_v obtain_v by_o he_o to_o close_v then_o as_o we_o begin_v here_o sobriety_n be_v call_v for_o and_o curiosity_n be_v to_o be_v shun_v and_o in_o worship_n the_o heart_n be_v rather_o to_o be_v occupy_v with_o godly_a fear_n reverence_n and_o dread_n than_o the_o head_n to_o be_v he_o we_o be_v worship_v that_o it_o be_v our_o design_n to_o adore_v he_o and_o that_o it_o be_v from_o he_o that_o we_o expect_v what_o we_o pray_v for_o what_o ever_o the_o designation_n in_o the_o petition_n be_v and_o whatsoever_o person_n be_v name_v 3._o a_o impression_n of_o our_o own_o sinful_a disproportionablenesse_a to_o that_o work_n and_o of_o the_o utter_a incapacity_n that_o we_o stand_v in_o of_o have_v access_n to_o god_n or_o any_o ground_n of_o expect_v any_o thing_n from_o he_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o if_o it_o be_v not_o obtain_v by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n be_v seek_v be_v it_o not_o to_o and_o from_o god_n and_o 2._o for_o who_o cause_n and_o by_o virtue_n of_o what_o do_v thou_o expect_v it_o from_o god_n what_o give_v thou_o confidence_n to_o put_v that_o suit_n to_o he_o be_v it_o not_o only_o through_o the_o mediation_n of_o christ_n jesus_n alone_a and_o where_o these_o two_o be_v fix_o answer_v by_o the_o conscience_n when_o tentation_n
