XIV 1 The people murmure at the news 6 Joshua and Caleb labour to still them 11 God threatneth them 13 Moses persh●adeth God and obtaineth pardon 26 The murmurers are deprived of entring into the land 36 The men who raised the evil report die by a plague 40 The people that would invade the land against the will of God are smitten ANd all the congregation lifted up their voice and cried and the people wept that night 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron and the whole congregation said unto them Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt or would God we had died in this wilderness 3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land to fall by the sword that our wives and our children should be a prey were it not better for us to return into Egypt 4 And they said one to another Let us make a captain and let us return into Egypt 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel 6 ¶ And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh which were of them that searched the land rent their clothes 7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel saying The land which we passed through to search it is an exceeding good land 8 If the LORD delight in us then he will bring us into this land and give it us a land which floweth with milk and honey 9 Onely rebel not ye against the LORD neither fear ye the people of the land for they are bread for us their † Heb. scadow defence is departed from them and the LORD is with us fear them not 10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones and the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel 11 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses How long will this people provoke me and how long will it be ere they beleeve me for all the signs which I have shewed among them 12 I will smite them with the pestilence and disinherit them and will make of thee a great nation and mightier then they 13 ¶ And * Exod. 32.12 Moses said unto the LORD Then the Egyptians shall hear it for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them 14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people that thou LORD art seen face to face and that * Exod. ●● 21 thy cloud standeth over them and that thou goest before them by day-time in apillar of a cloud and in a pillar of fire by night 15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man then the nations which have heard the same of thee will speak saying 16 Because the LORD was not * Deut. 9.28 able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness 17 And now I beseech thee let the power of my Lord be great according as thou hast spoken saying 18 The LORD is * Ex. 34.6 Ps 103.8 long-suffering and of great mercy forgiving iniquity and transgression and by no means clearing the guilty * Ex. 20.5 and 34.7 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation 19 Pardon I beseech thee the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy and as thou hast forgiven this people from Egypt even ‖ Or hitherto until now 20 And the LORD said I have pardoned according to thy word 21 But as truly as I live all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD 22 Because all those men which have seen my glory and my miracles which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness and have tempted me now these ten times and have not hearkned to my voice 23 † Heb. if they see the land Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers neither shall any of them that provoked me see it 24 But my servant * Josh 14.6 Caleb because he had another spirit with him and hath followed me fully him will I bring into the land whereinto he went and his seed shall possess it 25 Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley To morrow turn you and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea 26 ¶ And the LORD stake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation which murmure against me I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel which they murmure against me 28 Say unto them * Ch. 26.65 and 32.11 Deu. 1.35 As truly as I live saith the LORD as ye have spoken in mine ears so will I do to you 29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness and all that were numbred of you according to your whole number from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me 30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land concerning which I † Heb. lifted up my hand sware to make you dwell therein save Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones which ye said should be a prey them will I bring in and they shall know the land which ye have despised 32 But as for you your
and the LORD delivered them into the hand of the Philistines fourty years 2 ¶ And there was a certain man of Zorah of the family of the Danites whose name was Manoah and his wife was barren and bare not 3 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman and said unto her Behold now thou art barren and bearest not but thou shalt conceive and bear a son 4 Now therefore beware I pray thee and * Numb 6 2 3. drink not wine nor strong drink and eat not any unclean thing 5 For lo thou shalt conceive and bear a son and * Numb 6.5 1 Sam. 1.11 no rasour shall come on his head for the childe shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines 6 ¶ Then the woman came and told her husband saying A man of God came unto me and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God very terrible but I asked him not whence he was neither told he me his name 7 But he said unto me Behold thou shalt conceive and bear a son and now drink no wine nor strong drink neither eat any unclean thing for the childe shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death 8 ¶ Then Manoah intreated the LORD and said O my Lord let the man of God which thou didst send come again unto us and teach us what we shall do unto the childe that shall be born 9 And God hearkned to the voice of Manoah and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field but Manoah her husband was not with her 10 And the woman made haste and ran and shewed her husband and said unto him Behold the man hath appeared unto me that came unto me the other day 11 And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said unto him Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman And he said I am 12 And Manoah said Now let thy words come to pass † Heb. How shall we order the childe and ‖ Or what shall be do † Heb. what shall be his work how shall we do unto him 13 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware 14 She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine neither let her drink wine or strong drink nor eat any unclean thing all that I commanded her let her observe 15 ¶ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD I pray thee let us detain thee until we shall have made ready a kid † Heb. before thee for thee 16 And the angel of the LORD said unto Manoah Though thou detain me I will not eat of thy bread and it thou wilt offer a burnt-offering thou must offer it unto the LORD for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD 17 And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD What is thy name that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour 18 And the angel of the LORD said unto him Why askest thou thus after my name seeing it is ‖ Or wonderful secret 19 So Manoah took a kid with a meat-offering and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD and the angel did wondrously and Manoah and his wife looked on 20 For it came to pass when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar and Manoah and his wife looked on it and fell on their faces to the ground 21 But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to Manoah and to his wife Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD 22 And Manoah said unto his wife * Exod. 33.20 Ch. 6.22 We shall surely die because we have seen God 23 But his wife said unto him If the LORD were pleased to kill us he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meat-offering at our hands neither would he have shewed us all these things nor would as at this time have told us such things as these 24 ¶ And the woman bare a son and called his name Samson and the childe grew and the LORD blessed him 25 And the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol CHAP. XIV 1 Samson desireth a wife of the Philistines 5 In his journey he killeth a lion 8 In a second journey be findeth honey in the carcase 10 Samsons marriate-feast 12 His riddle by his wife is made known 19 He spoileth thirty Philistines 20 His wife is married to another ANd Samson went down to Timnath and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines 2 And he came up and told his father and his mother and said I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines now therefore get her for me to wife 3 Then his father and his mother said unto him Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren or among all my people that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines And Samson said unto his father Get her for me for † Heb. she is right in mine eyes she pleaseth me well 4 But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD that he sought an occasion against the Philistines for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel 5 Then went Samson down and his father and his mother to Timnath and came to the vineyards of Timnath and behold a young lion roared † Heb. in meeting him against him 6 And the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and he rent him as he would have rent a kid and he had nothing in his hand but he told not his father or his mother what he had done 7 And he went down and talked with the woman and she pleased Samson well 8 ¶ And after a time he returned to take her and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion and behold there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion 9 And he took thereof in his hands and went on eating and came to his father and mother and he gave them and they did eat but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion 10 ¶ So his father went down unto the woman and Samson made there a feast for so used the young men to do 11 And it came to pass when they saw him that they brought thirty companions to be with him 12 ¶ And Samson said unto them I will now put forth a riddle unto you if you can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast and finde it out then I will give
And number thee an army like the army † Heb. that was fal● that thou hast lost horse for horse and chariot for chariot and we will fight against them in the plain and surely we shall be stronger then they And he hearkned unto their voice and did so 26 And it came to pass at the return of the year that Ben-hadad numbred the Syrians and went up to Aphek † Heb. to the war with Israel to fight against Israel 27 And the children of Israel were numbred and ‖ Or were victualled were all present and went against them and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids but the Syrians filled the countrey 28 ¶ And there came a man of God and spake unto the king of Israel and said Thus saith the LORD Because the Syrians have said The LORD is God of the hills but he is not God of the valleys therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand and ye shall know that I am the LORD 29 And they pitched one over against the other seven days and so it was that in the seventh day the battel was joyned and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day 30 But the rest fled to Aphek into the city and there a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men that were left and Ben-hadad fled and came into the city ‖ Or from chamber to chamber † Heb. into a chamber within a chamber into an inner chamber 31 ¶ And his servants said unto him Behold now we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings let us I pray thee put sackcloth on our loyns and ropes upon our heads and go out to the king of Israel peradventure he will save thy life 32 So they girded sackcloth on their loyns and put ropes on their heads and came to the king of Israel and said Thy servant Ben-hadad saith I pray thee let me live And he said Is he yet alive he is my brother 33 Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him and did hastily catch it and they said Thy brother Ben-hadad Then he said Go ye bring him Then Ben-hadad came forth to him and he caused him to come up into the chariot 34 And Ben-hadad said unto him The cities which my father took from thy father I will restore and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus as my father made in Samaria Then said Ahab I will send thee away with this covenant So he made a covenant with him and sent him away 35 ¶ And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD Smite me I pray thee And the man refused to smite him 36 Then said he unto him Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD behold assoon as thou art departed from me a lion shall slay thee And assoon as he was departed from him a lion found him and slew him 37 Then he found another man and said Smite me I pray thee And the man smote him † Heb. smiting wounding so that in smiting he wounded him 38 So the prophet departed and waited for the king by the way and disguised himself with ashes upon his face 39 And as the king passed by he cried unto the king and he said Thy servant went out into the midst of the battel and behold a man turned aside and brought a man unto me and said Keep this man if by any means he be missing then shall thy life be for his life or else thou shalt † Heb. weigh pay a talent of silver 40 And as thy servant was busie here and there † Heb. he was not he was gone And the king of Israel said unto him So shall thy judgement be thy self hast decided it 41 And he hasted and took the ashes away from his face and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets 42 And he said unto him Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 22.37 Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction therefore thy life shall go for his life and thy people for his people 43 And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased and came to Samaria CHAP. XXI 1 Ahab being denied Naboths vineyard is grieved 5 Jezebel writing letters against Naboth he is condemned of blasphemy 15 Ahab taketh possession of the vineyard 17 Elijah denounceth judgements against Ahab and Jezebel 25 Wicked Ahab repenting God deferreth the judgement ANd it came to pass after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria 2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth saying Give me thy vineyard that I may have it for a garden of herbs because it is near unto my house and I will give thee for it a better vineyard then it or if it † Heb. be good in thine eyes seem good to thee I will give thee the worth of it in money 3 And Naboth said to Ahab The LORD forbid it me that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee 4 And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him for he had said I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers and he laid him down upon his bed and turned away his face and would eat no bread 5 ¶ But Jezebel his wife came to him and said unto him Why is thy spirit so sad that thou eatest no bread 6 And he said unto her Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite and said unto him Give me thy vineyard for money or else if it please thee I will give thee another vineyard for it and he answered I will not give thee my vineyard 7 And Jezebel his wise said unto him Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel arise and eat bread and let thine heart be merry I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite 8 So she wrote letters in Ahabs name and sealed them with his seal and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city dwelling with Naboth 9 And she wrote in the letters saying Proclaim a fast and set Naboth † Heb. in the top of the people on high among the people 10 And set two men sons of Belial before him to bear witness against him saying Thou didst blaspheme God and the king and then carry him out and stone him that he may die 11 And the men of his city even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city did as Jezebel had sent unto them and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them 12 They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth on high

VI. 1 Daniel is made chief of the presidents 4 They couspiring against him obtain an idolatrous decree 10 Daniel accused of the breach thereof is cast into the lions den 18 Daniel is saved 24 his adversaries devoured 25 and God magnified by a decree IT pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes which should be over the whole kingdom 2 And over these three presidents of whom Daniel was first that the princes might give accounts unto them and the king should have no damage 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes because an excellent spirit was in him and the king thought to set him over the whole realm 4 ¶ Then the presidents and princes sought to finde occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom but they could finde none occasion nor fault forasmuch as he was faithful neither was there any errour or fault found in him 5 Then said these men We shall not finde any occasion against this Daniel except we finde it against him concerning the law of his God 6 Then these presidents and princes † Or came ●●mult●●ously assembled together to the king and said thus unto him King Darius live for ever 7 All the presidents of the kingdom the governours and the princes the counsellours and the captains have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm ‖
father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouring● of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the ●and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. VII 11 Raguel telleth Tobias what had happened to his daughter 12 and giveth her in marriage unto him 17 She is conveyed to her chamber and weepeth 18 Her mother comforteth her ANd when they were come to Ecbatane they came to the house of Raguel and Sara met them and after they had saluted one another she brought them into the house 2 Then said Raguel to Edna his wife How like is this young man to Tobit my cousin 3 And Raguel asked them From whence

difficulty which they finde that desire to look into the narrations of the story for the variety of the matter 25 We have been careful that they that will read might have delight and that they that are desirous to commit to memory might have ease and that all into whose hands it comes might have profit 26 Therefore to us that have taken upon us this painful labour of abridging it was not easie but a matter of sweat and watching 27 Even as it is no ease unto him that prepareth a banquet and seeketh the benefit of others yet ‖ Or to deserve well of many for the pleasuring of many we will undertake gladly this great pains 28 Leaving to the authour the exact handling of every particular and labouring to follow the rules of an abridgement 29 For as the master-builder of a new house must care for the whole building but he that undertaketh to set it out and paint it must seek out fit things for the adorning thereof even so I think it is with us 30 To stand upon every point and go over things at large and to be curious in particulars belongeth to the first authour of the story 31 But to use brevity and avoid much labouring of the work is to be granted to him that will make an abridgement 32 Here then will we begin the story onely adding thus much to that which hath been said That it is a foolish thing to make a long prologue and to be short in the story it self CHAP. III. 1 Of the honour done to the temple by the kings of the Gentiles 4 Simon uttereth what treasures are in the temple 7 Heliodorus is sent to take them away 24 He is stricken of God and healed at the prayer of Onias NOw when the holy city was inhabited with all peace and the laws were kept very well because of the godliness of Onias the high priest and his hatred of wickedness 2 It came to pass that even the kings themselves did honour the place and magnifie the temple with their best gifts 3 Insomuch that Seleucus king of Asia of his own revenues bare all the costs belonging to the service of the sacrifices 4 But one Simon of the tribe of Benjamin who was made governour of the temple fell out with the high priest about disorder in the city 5 And when he could not overcome Onias he gat him to Arollonius the son of Thraseas who then was governour of Celosyria and Phenice 6 And told him that the treasury in Jerusalem was full of infinite sums of money so that the multitude of their riches which did not pertain to the account of the sacrifices was innumerable and that it was possible to bring all into the kings hand 7 Now when Apollonius came to the king had shewed him of the the money whereof he was told the king chose out Heliodorus his treasurer and sent him with a commandment to bring him the foresaid money 8 So forthwith Heliodorus took his journey under a colour of visiting the cities of Celosyria and P●●nice but indeed to fulfil the kings purpose 9 And when he was come to Jerusalem and had been courteously received of the high priest of the city he told him what intelligence was given of the money and declared wherefore he came and asked if these things were so indeed 10 Then the high priest told him that there was such money laid up for the relief of widows and fatherless children 11 And that some of it belonged to Hircanus son of Tobias a man of great dig●ity and not as that wicked Simon had misinformed the sum whereof in all was four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold 12 And that it was altogether impossible that such wrongs should be done unto them that had committed it to the holiness of the place and to the majesty and inviolable sanctity of the temple honoured over all the world 13 But Heliodorus because of the kings commandment given him said That in any wise it must be brought into the kings treasury 14 So at the day which he appointed he entred in to order this matter wherefore there was no sma●l agony throughout the whole city 15 But the priests prostrating themselves before the altar in their priests vestments called unto heaven upon him that made a law concerning things given to b● kept that they should safety be preserved for such as had committed them to be kept 16 Then whoso had looked the high priest in the face it would have wounded his heart for his countenance and the changing of his colour declared the inward agony of his minde 17 For the man was so compassed with fear and horrour of the body that it was manifest to them that looked upon him what sorrow he had now in his heart 18 Others ran flocking out of their houses ‖ Or to make general supplication to the general supplication because the place was like to come into contempt 19 And the women girt with sackcloth under their breasts abounded in the streets and the virgins that were kept in ran some to the gates and some to the walls and others looked out of the windows 20 And all holding their hands towards heaven made supplication 21 Then it would have pitied a man to see the falling down of the multitude of all sorts and the † Gr. expectation fear of the high priest being in such an agony 22 They then called upon the almighty Lord to keep the t●ings committed of trust safe and sure for those that had committed them 23 Nevertheless Heliodorus executed that which was decreed 24 Now as he was there present himself with his guard about the treasury the ‖ Or Lord of our fathers Lord of spirits and the prince of all power caused a great appatition so that all that presumed to come in with him were astonished at the power of God and fainted and were sore afraid 25 For there appeared unto them an horse with a terrible rider upon him and adorned with a very fair covering and he ran fiercely and smote at Heliodorus with his forefeet and it seemed that he that sat upon the horse had complete harness of gold 26 Moreover two other young men appeared before him notable in strength excellent in beauty and comely in apparel who stood by him on either side and scourged him continually and gave him many sore stripes 27 And Heliodorus fell suddenly unto the ground and was compassed with great darkness but they that were with him took him up and put him into a litter 28 Thus him that lately came with a great train and with all his guard into the said treasury they carried out being unable to help himself with his weapons and manifestly they acknowledged the power of God 29 For he by the hand of God was cast down and lay speechless without all hope of life 30 But they praised the Lord that had miraculously honoured his own place for the temple
to rebuke him 33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples he rebuked Peter saying Get thee behinde me Satan for thou savourest not the things that be of God but the things that be of men 34 ¶ And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also he said unto them * Mat. 30 3● Whosoever will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me 35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospels the same shall save it 36 For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul 38 * Mat. ● 33 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels CHAP. IX 2 Jesus is transfigured 11 He instructeth his disciples concerning the coming of Elias 14 casteth forth a dumb and deaf spirit 30 foretelleth his death and resurrection 33 exhorteth his disciples to humility 38 bidding them not to prohibit such as be not against them nor to give offence to any of the faithful ANd he said unto them * Mat. 16.28 Verily I say unto you that there be some of them that stand here which shall not taste of death till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power 2 ¶ * Mat. 27.1 And after six days Jesus taketh with him Peter and James and John and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves and he was transfigured before them 3 And his raiment became shining exceeding white as snow so as no fuller on earth can white them 4 And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses and they were talking with Jesus 5 And Peter answered and said to Jesus Master it is good for us to be here and let us make three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 6 For he wist not what to say for they were sore afraid 7 And there was a cloud that overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud saying This is my beloved Son hear him 8 And suddenly when they had looked round about they saw no man any more save Jesus onely with themselves 9 And as they came down from the mountain he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen till the Son of man were risen from the dead 10 And they kept that saying with themselves questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean 11 ¶ And they asked him saying Why say the scribes that Elias must first come 12 And he answered and told them Elias verily cometh first and restoreth all things and * Isa 53.24 how it is written of the Son of man that he must suffer many things and be set at nought 13 But I say unto you that Elias is indeed come and they have done unto him whatsoever they lifted as it is written of him 14 ¶ * Mat. 17.14 And when he came to his disciples he saw a great multitude about them and the scribes questioning with them 15 And straightway all the people when they beheld him were greatly amazed and running to him saluted him 16 And he asked the scribes What question ye ‖ Or among your selves with them 17 And one of the multitude answered and said Master I have brought unto thee my son which hath a dumb spirit 18 And wheresoever he taketh him he ‖ Or dasheth him teareth him and he fometh and gnasheth with his teeth and pineth away and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out and they could not 19 He answered him and saith O faithless generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him unto me 20 And they brought him unto him and when he saw him straightway the spirit tare him he fell on the ground and wallowed foming 21 And he asked his father How long is it ago since this came unto him And he said Of a childe 22 And oft-times it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him but if thou canst do any thing have compassion on us and help us 23 Jesus said unto him If thou canst beleeve all things are possible to him that beleeveth 24 And straightway the father of the childe cried out and said with tears Lord I beleeve help thou mine unbelief 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together he rebuked the foul spirit saying unto him Thou dumb and deaf spirit I charge thee Come out of him and enter no more into him 26 And the spirit cried and rent him sore and came out of him and he was as one dead insomuch that many said He is dead 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up and he arose 28 And when he was come into the house his disciples asked him privately Why could not we cast him out 29 And he said unto them This kinde can come forth by nothing but by prayer and lasting 30 ¶ * Mat. 17.22 And they departed thence and passed through Galilee and he would not that any man should know it 31 For he taught his disciples and said unto them The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men and they shall kill him and after that he is killed he shall rise the third day 32 But they understood not that saying and were afraid to ask him 33 ¶ * Mat. 18.1 And he came to Capernaum and being in the house he asked them What was it that ye disputed among your selves by the way 34 But they held their peace for by the way they had disputed among themselves who should be the greatest 35 And he sat down and called the twelve and saith unto them If any man desire to be first the same shall be last of all servant of all 36 And he took a childe and set him in the midst of them and when he had taken him in his arms he said unto them 37 Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name receiveth me and whosoever shall receive me receiveth not me but him that sent-me 38 ¶ * Luk. 9.49 And John answered him saying Master we saw one casting out devils in thy name and he followeth not us and we forbad XVII 1 Christ prayeth to his Father to glorifie him 6 to preserve his apostles 11 in unity 17 and truth 20 to glorifie them and all other beleevers with him in heaven THese words spake Jesus and lift up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorifie thy Son that thy Son also may glorifie thee 2 * Mat. 28.18 As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him 3 And this is life eternal that they might know thee the onely true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent 4 I have glorified thee on the earth I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do 5 And now O Father glorifie thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world thine they were and thou gavest them me and they have kept thy word 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me and they have received them * Chap. 16.27 and have known surely that I came out from thee and they have beleeved that thou didst send me 9 I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou hast given me for they are thine 10 And all mine are thine thine are mine

XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteo●● 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. II. 1 By comparing what we were by 3 nature with what we are 5 by grace 10 he declareth that we are made for good works and 13 being brought near by Christ should not live as 1● Gentiles and 12 foreiners in time past but as 19 citizens with the saints and the family of God ANd * Col. 2.13 you hath be quickned who were dead in trespasses and sins 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling † Gr. the wills the desires of the flesh and of the minde and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 4 But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5 Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6 And hath raised as up together and made as sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9 Not of works lest any man should boast 10 For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ‖ Or prepared ordained that we should walk in them 11 Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12 That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the bloud of Christ 14 For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity ‖ Or in himself thereby 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off and to to them that were nigh 18 For * Rom. 5.2 through him we both have an access by one
Spirit unto the Father 19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone 21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord 22 In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit CHAP. III. 5 The hidden mystery 6 that the Gentiles should be saved 3 was made known to Paul by revelation 8 and to him was that grace given that 〈◊〉 he should preach it 13 He desireth them not to faint for his tribulation 14 and prayeth 19 that they may perceive the great love of Christ toward them FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote ‖ Or a little before afore in few words 4 Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6 That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 7 Whereof I was made a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power 8 Unto me who am less then the least of all saints is this grace given that * Gal. 1.16 I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God who created all things by Jesus Christ 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him 13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you which is your glory 14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named 16 That he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthned with might by his Spirit in the inner man 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith that ye being rooted and grounded in love 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height 19 And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God 20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end Amen CHAP. II. 1 He still exhorteth them to be constant in Christ 8 to beware of philosophy and vain traditions 18 w●rshipping of angels 20 and legal ceremonies which are ended in Christ FOr I would that ye knew what great ‖ Or fear o● ●are conflict I have for you and for them at Laodicea and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh 2 That their hearts might be comforted being knit together in love unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God of the Father of Christ 3 ‖ Or Wherein In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge 4 And this I say lest any man should beguile you with enticing words 5 For though I be absent in the flesh yet am I with you in the spirit joying beholding your order the stedfastness of your faith in Christ 6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk ye in him 7 Rooted and built up in him and stablished in the faith as ye have been taught abounding therein with thanksgiving 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit after the tradition of men after the ‖ Or elements rudiments of the world and not after Christ 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily 10 And ye are complete in him which is the head of all principality and power 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ 12 * Rom. 6.4 Buried with him in baptism wherein also you are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God who hath raised him from the dead 13 * Eph. 2.1 And you being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh hath he quickned together with him having forgiven you all trespasses 14 Blotting out the hand-writing of ordinances that was against us which was contrary to us and took it out of the way nailing it to his cross 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers he made a shew of them openly triumphing over them ‖ Or in himself in it 16 Let no man therefore judge you ‖ Or for eating and drinking in meat or in drink or ‖ Or in part in respect of an holy-day or of the new-moon or of the sabbath days 17 Which are a shadow of things to come but the body is of Christ 18 Let no man ‖ Or judge against you beguile you of your reward † Gr. being a voluntary in humility in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels intruding into those things which he hath not seen vainly puft up by his fleshly minde 19 And not holding the head from which all the body by joynts and bands having nourishment ministred and knit together increaseth with the increase of God 20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the ‖ Or elements rudiments of the world why as though living in the world are ye subject to ordinances 21 Touch not taste not handle not 22 Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men 23 Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will-worship and humility and ‖ Or punishin● or not sparing neglecting of the body not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh CHAP. III. 1 He sheweth where we should seek Christ 5 He exhorteth to mortification 10 to put off the old man and to put on Christ 12 exhorting to charity humility and other several duties IF ye then be risen with Christ seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God 2 Set your ‖ Or mindt affection on things above not on things on the earth 3 For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God 4 When Christ who is our life shall appear then shall ye also appear with him in glory 5 Mortifie therefore your members which are upon the earth * Eph. 5.8 fornication uncleanness inordinate affection evil concupiscence and covetousness which is idolatry 6 For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience 7 In the which ye also walked sometime when ye lived in them 8 But now you also put off all these anger wrath malice blasphemy filthy communication out of your mouth 9 Lie not one to another seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds 10 And have put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew circumcision nor uncircumcision Barbarian Scythian bond nor free but Christ is all in all 12 Put on therefore as the elect of God holy and beloved bowels of mercies kindness humbleness of minde meekness long-suffering 13 Forbearing one another and forgiving one another if any man have a ‖ Or complaint quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you so also do ye 14 And above all these things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts to the which also ye are called in one body and be ye thankful 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And * 1 Cor. 10.31 whatsoever ye do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the Father by him 18 * Eph. 5.22 Tit. 2.5 1 Pet. 3.1 Wives submit your selves unto your own husband as it is fit in the Lord. 19 * Eph. 5.25 Husbands love your wives and be not bitter against them 20 * Eph. 6. ● Children obey your parents in all things for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. 21 * Eph. 6.4 Fathers provoke not your children to anger lest they be discouraged 22 * Eph. 6.5 Tit. 2.9 Servants obey in all things your masters according to the flesh not with eye-service as men-pleasers but in singleness of heart fearing God 23 And whatsoever ye do do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance for ye serve the Lord Christ 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done and * Rom. 2.11 Eph. 6.9 there is no respect of persons CHAP. IV. 1 He exhorteth them to be servent in prayer 5 to walk wisely toward them that are not yet come to the true knowledge of Christ 10 He saluteth them and wisheth

XIII 1 Divers admonitions as to charity 4 to honest life 5 to avoid coveteousness 7 to regard Gods preachers 9 to take heed of strange doctrines 10 to confess Christ 16 to give alms 17 to obey governours 18 to pray for the apostle 20 The conclusion LEt * Rom. 12.10 brotherly love continue 2 * Rom. 12.13 1 Pet. 4.9 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers for thereby * Gen. 18.3 19.2 some have entertained angess unawares 3 Remember

V. 1 Wicked rich men are to fear Gods vengeance 7 We ought to be patient in afflictions after the example of the prophets and Job 12 to forbear swearing 13 to pray in adversity to sing in prosperity 16 to acknowledge mutually our several faults to pray one for another 19 and to reduce a straying brother to the truth GO to now ye rich men weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you 2 Your ●iches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten 3 Your gold and silver is cankered and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall eat your flesh as it were fire ye have heaped treasure together for the last days 4 Behold the hire of the labourers which have reaped down your fields which is of you kept back by fraud crieth and the cries of them which have reaped are entred into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth 5 Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter 6 Ye have condemned and killed the just and he doth not resist you 7 ‖ Or be long patient or suffer with long patience Be patient therefore brethren unto the coming of the Lord. Behold the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth and hath long patience for it until he receive the early and latter rain 8 Be ye also patient stablish your hearts for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh 9 ‖ Or groan or grieve not Grudge not one against another brethren lest ye be condemned behold the judge standeth before the door 10 Take my brethren the prophets who have spoken in the name of the Lord for an example of suffering affliction and of patience 11 Behold we count them happy which endure Ye have heard of the patience of Job and have seen the end of the Lord that the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy 12 But above all things my brethren * Mat. 5.34 swear not neither by heaven neither by the earth neither by any other oath but let your yea be yea and your nay nay lest ye fall into condemnation 13 Is any among you afflicted let him pray Is any merry let him sing psalms 14 Is any sick among you let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him * Mar. 6 1● anointing him with oyl in the name of the Lord 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up and if he have committed sins they shall be forgiven him 16 Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be healed The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are and * 1 Kin. 17.1 he prayed ‖ Or. in his prayer earnestly that it might not rain and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six moneths 18 And * 1 Kin. 18.42 45. he prayed again and the heaven gave rain and the earth brought forth her fruit 19 Brethren * Mat. 18.15 if any of you do err from the truth one convert him 20 Let him know the he which converteth the sinner from the errour of his way shall save a soul from death and shall hide a multitude of sins ¶ The first epistle general of S. seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. Balaam who taught Balac to cast a stumbling-block before the children of Israel to eat things sacrificed unto idols and to commit fornication 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which thing I hate 16 Repent or else I will come unto thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth 17 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a white stone and in the stone a new name written which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it 18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write These things saith the Son of God who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire and his feet are like fine brass 19 I know thy works and charity and service and faith and thy patience and thy works and the last to be more then the first 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee because thou sufferest that woman * ● Kin. 16. ●1 Jezabel which calleth her self a prophetess to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication and to eat things sacrificed unto idols 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication and she repented not 22 Behold I will cast her into a bed and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation except they repent of their deeds 23 And I will kill her children with death and all the churches shall know that * Ps 7.9 Jer. 11.20 17.10 I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts and I will give unto every one of you according to your works 24 But unto you I say and unto the rest in Thyatira As many as have not this doctrine and which have not known the depths of Satan as they speak I will put upon you none other burden 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come 26 And he that overcometh and keepeth my works unto the end to him will I give power over the nations 27 * Psal 2.6 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers even as I received of my Father 28 And I will give him the morning star 29 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches CHAP. III. 2 The angel of the church of Sardis is reproved 3 exhorted to repent and threatned if he do not repent 8 The angel of the church of Philadelphia 10 is approved for his dil●●en●e and patience 15 The angel of Laodicea is rebuzed for being neither hot nor cold 19 and admonished to be more zealous 20 Christ standeth at the door and knocketh ANd unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead 2 Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent * 1 Thes 5. ● 2 Pet. 3.10 Ch 16.15 If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy 5 He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the * Phil. 4.3 Ch. 20.12 book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels 6 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath * Is 2● 22 the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth no man openeth 8 I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied
