by_o solomon_n and_o solemn_o dedicate_v to_o he_o for_o his_o house_n or_o palace_n wherein_o to_o dwell_v among_o that_o people_n it_o please_v he_o as_o it_o be_v to_o take_v livery_n and_o seisin_n by_o the_o cloud_n which_o on_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o divine_a majesty_n hover_v over_o they_o and_o be_v therefore_o not_o improper_o call_v by_o the_o jew_n the_o shekinah_n or_o god_n peculiar_a household_n and_o family_n so_o also_o to_o all_o holy_a man_n in_o all_o age_n god_n be_v present_a by_o his_o spirit_n by_o which_o they_o become_v temple_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n upon_o which_o the_o apostle_n pronounce_v peremptory_o rom._n 8._o 9_o if_o any_o man_n have_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n he_o be_v none_o of_o he_o which_o i_o understand_v in_o this_o sense_n q._n d._n he_o be_v not_o arrive_v at_o the_o excellent_a state_n of_o christianity_n that_o have_v not_o experience_n of_o the_o residence_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n in_o he_o only_a be_v such_o to_o be_v expect_v now_o because_o those_o be_v proper_a only_o for_o the_o first_o age_n when_o whilst_o the_o church_n be_v under_o persecute_v emperor_n and_o in_o its_o infancy_n god_n think_v fit_a by_o such_o prodigious_a display_v of_o his_o power_n and_o presence_n to_o make_v all_o the_o world_n see_v his_o concern_n for_o it_o and_o that_o as_o i_o say_v before_o he_o have_v take_v possession_n of_o it_o but_o ordinary_o and_o especial_o in_o the_o case_n of_o private_a christian_n the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n with_o they_o discover_v itself_o by_o such_o effect_n as_o these_o follow_v for_o 2._o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n though_o he_o do_v not_o work_v miracle_n now_o yet_o do_v he_o not_o mere_o take_v up_o his_o residence_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o holy_a man_n but_o actuate_v they_o prompt_v they_o forward_o in_o all_o good_a action_n help_n and_o strengthen_v they_o in_o their_o duty_n and_o inflame_v their_o resolution_n and_o zeal_n in_o all_o brave_a and_o generous_a erterprise_n in_o respect_n of_o which_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n to_o live_v and_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v not_o so_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o if_o what_o good_a be_v do_v the_o spirit_n do_v it_o for_o man_n nor_o much_o less_o as_o if_o he_o hurry_v man_n on_o whensoever_o they_o do_v well_o and_o so_o for_o defect_n of_o such_o motion_n be_v liable_a to_o bear_v the_o blame_n of_o their_o irregularity_n when_o they_o do_v evil_a for_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n he_o never_o move_v but_o to_o that_o which_o be_v certain_o good_a and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o stand_a rule_n of_o scripture_n and_o natural_a reason_n so_o neither_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n when_o he_o incite_v to_o any_o such_o thing_n do_v he_o overpower_v
his_o holy_a spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a because_o upon_o many_o account_n there_o be_v then_o extraordinary_a necessity_n for_o it_o and_o also_o the_o spirit_n then_o give_v be_v so_o plain_o miraculous_a and_o give_v such_o proof_n of_o itself_o that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o suspicion_n of_o cheat_n in_o the_o case_n yet_o forasmuch_o as_o both_o these_o thing_n fail_v now_o viz._n both_o the_o occasion_n and_o the_o discrimination_n they_o think_v it_o safe_a to_o reject_v all_o such_o pretension_n then_o admit_v they_o to_o lay_v open_a a_o way_n for_o so_o much_o cheat_v and_o imposture_n as_o may_v be_v reasonable_o expect_v when_o there_o be_v no_o certain_a way_n of_o detect_v it_o now_o therefore_o if_o in_o the_o first_o place_n i_o can_v give_v a_o plain_a account_n how_o it_o may_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o such_o man_n as_o be_v suppose_v in_o the_o first_o objection_n may_v be_v destitute_a of_o such_o advantage_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n as_o we_o have_v assert_v to_o be_v the_o token_n of_o his_o residence_n and_o then_o second_o if_o i_o show_v also_o how_o to_o prevent_v all_o imposture_n by_o distinguish_v the_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o fancy_n and_o other_o allusion_n than_o both_o the_o objection_n will_v be_v answer_v and_o the_o reader_n will_v not_o be_v offend_v with_o the_o digression_n §_o iii_o and_o to_o dispatch_v all_o brief_o i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o to_o which_o i_o say_v that_o as_o it_o be_v not_o usual_a with_o god_n to_o precipitate_v or_o prevent_v the_o course_n of_o natural_a cause_n but_o to_o bless_v and_o succeed_v they_o in_o their_o due_a and_o proper_a order_n so_o neither_o in_o his_o especial_a providence_n or_o in_o the_o act_n of_o his_o grace_n do_v he_o delight_n to_o work_v per_fw-la saltum_fw-la but_o gradual_o according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o subject_n and_o its_o fitness_n to_o receive_v his_o impression_n according_o though_o he_o be_v always_o ready_a to_o bestow_v his_o spirit_n with_o all_o the_o comfort_n and_o advantage_n thereof_o yet_o he_o expect_v and_o require_v all_o due_a qualification_n and_o preparation_n before_o he_o confer_v it_o now_o there_o be_v these_o three_o especial_a qualification_n for_o the_o reception_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o sense_n we_o speak_v of_o 1._o as_o i_o have_v intimate_v already_o that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o only_o purge_v from_o grosser_n pollution_n and_o begin_v to_o have_v a_o love_n of_o holiness_n but_o that_o he_o be_v singular_o pure_a so_o as_o at_o least_o not_o to_o admit_v of_o any_o voluntary_a transgression_n and_o especial_o be_v above_o all_o sensuality_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o it_o be_v observable_a in_o that_o sad_a miscarriage_n of_o david_n which_o we_o have_v often_o have_v occasion_n to_o refer_v to_o that_o it_o make_v he_o just_o fear_v and_o therefore_o earnest_o pray_v psal_n 51._o that_o god_n will_v not_o thereupon_o take_v his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o and_o the_o apostle_n when_o he_o be_v earnest_o persuade_v the_o ephesian_n not_o to_o grieve_v the_o holy_a spirit_n 30._o whereby_o they_o be_v seal_v to_o the_o day_n of_o redemption_n solemn_o warn_v they_o in_o the_o verse_n before_o that_o no_o corrupt_a or_o obscene_a and_o filthy_a communication_n proceed_v out_o of_o their_o mouth_n as_o that_o which_o will_v assure_o argue_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v no_o temple_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o again_o in_o the_o verse_n after_o the_o aforesaid_a exhortation_n he_o with_o the_o same_o earnestness_n give_v they_o caution_n against_o all_o bitterness_n and_o wrath_n and_o clamour_n etc._n etc._n as_o intimate_v that_o those_o also_o defile_v the_o soul_n and_o make_v it_o incapable_a of_o receive_v the_o bless_a spirit_n to_o which_o purpose_n the_o jew_n have_v a_o common_a say_n super_fw-la animum_fw-la turbidum_fw-la non_fw-la requiescit_fw-la spiritus_fw-la sanctus_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n require_v a_o sedate_n even_o temper_n as_o his_o quiet_a habitation_n 2._o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n require_v a_o lovely_a sweet_a and_o benign_a frame_n of_o spirit_n and_o abhor_v that_o hypochondriack_a sourness_n and_o austerity_n which_o yet_o some_o place_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o religion_n in_o when_o man_n will_v be_v always_o sigh_v and_o complain_v and_o peevish_o refuse_v consolation_n jonah_n confident_o tell_v god_n he_o do_v well_o to_o be_v angry_a and_o so_o these_o man_n seem_v to_o think_v they_o please_v god_n by_o grieve_v his_o spirit_n froward_o or_o at_o least_o fantastical_o resist_v his_o consolation_n but_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a mistake_n to_o think_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n will_v comfort_v man_n whether_o they_o will_v or_o no_o he_o require_v a_o persuadeable_a counsellable_n temper_n and_o such_o a_o disposition_n as_o will_v work_v with_o he_o for_o to_o make_v a_o black_a melancholist_n comfortable_a immediate_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v but_o by_o a_o frenzy_n or_o a_o miracle_n and_o for_o this_o last_o we_o be_v not_o to_o expect_v it_o now_o at_o god_n hand_n 15._o nay_o even_o the_o prophet_n elisha_n when_o he_o desire_v to_o call_v up_o the_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n call_v for_o a_o harp_n that_o he_o may_v put_v his_o mind_n in_o tune_n and_o dispose_v himself_o to_o become_v the_o instrument_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o so_o it_o be_v here_o a_o harmonious_a soul_n add_v to_o the_o former_a qualification_n invite_v down_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n especial_o if_o 3_o in_o the_o three_o place_n there_o be_v servant_n prayer_n join_v herewith_o for_o since_o god_n expect_v we_o shall_v make_v our_o acknowledgement_n of_o he_o and_o demonstrate_v he_o value_v we_o have_v of_o the_o mercy_n we_o seek_v by_o the_o importunity_n of_o our_o address_n to_o he_o even_o then_o when_o we_o address_v ourselves_o to_o he_o for_o common_a favour_n with_o much_o less_o reason_n can_v we_o expect_v that_o he_o shall_v bestow_v this_o great_a boon_n upon_o we_o unless_o it_o be_v seek_v by_o ardent_a and_o instant_a prayer_n so_o our_o saviour_n have_v tell_v we_o luk._n 11._o 13._o that_o though_o he_o have_v a_o fatherly_a affection_n to_o give_v all_o good_a thing_n to_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v upon_o condition_n that_o we_o ask_v he_o and_o st._n james_n have_v further_a explain_v to_o we_o the_o manner_n of_o ask_v chap._n 1._o 6_o 7._o that_o it_o must_v be_v in_o faith_n without_o waver_v i._n e._n neither_o as_o doubtful_a of_o god_n goodness_n nor_o as_o if_o we_o be_v indifferent_a whether_o he_o grant_v our_o request_n or_o not_o for_o say_v he_o let_v not_o such_o a_o man_n think_v that_o he_o shall_v receive_v any_o thing_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n now_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o comfortable_a portion_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v not_o entail_v upon_o all_o the_o child_n which_o god_n receive_v to_o grace_n and_o pardon_n but_o that_o all_o these_o qualification_n be_v pre-required_n since_o it_o be_v also_o evident_a that_o some_o who_o perhaps_o may_v passionate_o desire_v it_o yet_o have_v a_o unhappy_a temper_n that_o unfit_v they_o for_o the_o entertainment_n of_o this_o heavenly_a guest_n and_o many_o other_o that_o have_v some_o good_a measure_n of_o sincerity_n which_o god_n will_v merciful_o accept_v in_o order_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v not_o yet_o raise_v to_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o holiness_n as_o to_o be_v capable_a of_o this_o favour_n at_o the_o present_a it_o can_v seem_v strange_a that_o such_o shall_v remain_v stranger_n to_o this_o most_o happy_a privilege_n nor_o can_v it_o yet_o be_v reasonable_a that_o their_o want_n of_o experience_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v any_o argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n to_o be_v expect_v §_o iv._o but_o then_o for_o the_o other_o difficulty_n viz._n how_o to_o distinguish_v the_o moti_fw-la on_o of_o god_n spirit_n from_o either_o the_o impression_n of_o satan_n or_o the_o result_v of_o a_o man_n be_v own_o temper_n and_o constitution_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v these_o property_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o if_o they_o be_v attend_v to_o and_o lay_v together_o will_v infallible_o distinguish_v it_o from_o any_o other_o motion_n and_o secure_v we_o from_o all_o illusion_n 1._o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n never_o move_v any_o man_n but_o in_o a_o action_n or_o course_n warrantable_a by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o since_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v give_v for_o a_o rule_n of_o our_o action_n and_o as_o such_o confirm_a in_o the_o most_o ample_a manner_n by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n the_o holy_a spirit_n shall_v notorious_o contradict_v itself_o if_o it_o shall_v contradict_v that_o indeed_o in_o former_a age_n whilst_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n be_v not_o entire_o deliver_v and_o consign_v in_o holy_a writ_n there_o be_v frequent_a intimation_n of_o his_o pleasure_n by_o the_o
convert_n be_v also_o the_o most_o charitable_a and_o favourable_a judge_n of_o other_o and_o the_o further_a from_o censoriousness_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o unbecoming_a that_o modesty_n which_o shall_v be_v in_o all_o man_n then_o to_o be_v critical_a and_o curious_a in_o espy_v the_o fail_n of_o other_o and_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o arrogant_o do_v towards_o god_n then_o to_o take_v the_o judgement_n out_o of_o his_o hand_n and_o place_n ourselves_o in_o the_o tribunal_n nay_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o infest_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o world_n than_o this_o pragmatical_a humour_n of_o censoriousness_n but_o say_v the_o convert_n let_v those_o that_o be_v without_o sin_n cast_v the_o first_o stone_n at_o other_o for_o my_o part_n i_o have_v enough_o to_o do_v at_o home_n and_o see_v more_o evil_a in_o myself_o then_o in_o all_o the_o world_n beside_o i_o have_v learn_v of_o the_o apostle_n to_o speak_v evil_a of_o no_o man_n consider_v that_o i_o myself_o be_v sometime_o foolish_a disobedient_a deceive_v serve_v divers_a lust_n and_o pleasure_n tit._n 3._o 3_o thus_o he_o compose_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o example_n to_o the_o world_n of_o that_o temper_n than_o which_o nothing_o be_v more_o conducent_a to_o better_v the_o estate_n of_o mankind_n he_o will_v not_o rake_v in_o man_n wound_n nor_o rip_v up_o their_o old_a sore_n but_o forgive_v as_o he_o hope_v to_o be_v forgive_v he_o will_v not_o give_v ear_n to_o malicious_a whisper_n which_o like_o the_o arrow_n of_o the_o pestilence_n fly_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o kill_v
