it_o as_o though_o there_o be_v nothing_o valuable_a in_o any_o against_o they_o but_o what_o he_o specifi_v and_o so_o he_o delude_v the_o poor_a simple_a soul_n and_o keep_v they_o blind_a recite_v part_n of_o a_o sentence_n and_o conceal_v the_o rest_n to_o make_v it_o untrue_a to_o their_o apprehension_n like_o a_o juggle_a cheater_n as_o so_o he_o have_v do_v in_o some_o part_n of_o this_o his_o answer_n which_o i_o hope_v to_o discover_v and_o his_o ignominious_a baseness_n in_o that_o respect_n to_o render_v i_o a_o liar_n and_o deceiver_n and_o sot_n etc._n etc._n as_o so_o he_o call_v i_o without_o any_o real_a or_o rational_a cause_n like_o his_o black_a father_n and_o again_o in_o his_o title_n page_n he_o cit_v a_o scripture_n which_o be_v parallel_v with_o their_o blasphemous_a practice_n include_v themselves_o as_o copartner_n with_o the_o beast_n that_o have_v seven_o head_n and_o ten_o horn_n that_o have_v upon_o his_o head_n the_o name_n of_o blasphemy_n and_o open_v his_o mouth_n in_o blasphemy_n against_o god_n to_o blaspheme_v his_o name_n and_o his_o tabernable_a and_o they_o that_o dwell_v in_o heaven_n all_o which_o he_o do_v both_o by_o word_n and_o write_v as_o be_v clear_o prove_v in_o my_o little_a treatise_n and_o yet_o he_o bring_v this_o scripture_n as_o something_o applicable_a to_o we_o oh_o subtle_a serpent_n this_o be_v the_o old_a serpent_n policy_n to_o apply_v that_o to_o other_o which_o he_o fear_v will_v be_v bring_v and_o apply_v to_o himself_o and_o this_o he_o frequent_o use_v in_o his_o book_n to_o bring_v such_o yet_o i_o think_v it_o not_o proper_a to_o i_o in_o regard_n i_o be_o not_o go_v to_o betray_v he_o nor_o do_v not_o intend_v it_o in_o my_o treatise_n but_o only_o to_o discover_v he_o and_o his_o false_a doctrine_n and_o pernicious_a way_n nor_o do_v offer_v he_o either_o a_o kiss_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o that_o show_v any_o love_n or_o respect_n to_o his_o way_n and_o therefore_o in_o do_v we_o ever_o say_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v god_n but_o the_o word_n and_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o he_o here_o confess_v that_o all_o scripture_n give_v by_o inspiration_n of_o god_n be_v the_o word_n and_o word_n of_o god_n as_o be_v prove_v in_o my_o treatise_n and_o here_o confess_v by_o he_o but_o if_o all_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o he_o affirm_v be_v delude_v with_o a_o lie_a spirit_n and_o act_v by_o it_o in_o stead_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o to_o be_v carry_v blindfold_o to_o their_o great_a sin_n and_o condemnation_n and_o therefore_o what_o be_v that_o to_o the_o matter_n though_o satan_n have_v the_o scripture_n and_o have_v no_o good_a by_o it_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n therein_o for_o he_o or_o what_o if_o james_n naylor_n have_v it_o and_o find_v no_o life_n in_o it_o but_o a_o mere_a dead_a letter_n in_o his_o apprehension_n in_o regard_n he_o wre_v it_o and_o do_v not_o love_v it_o and_o therefore_o can_v afford_v it_o so_o much_o as_o a_o good_a word_n have_v a_o enmity_n against_o it_o not_o care_v much_o if_o it_o be_v all_o burn_v as_o it_o be_v very_o likely_a because_o it_o condemn_v he_o yea_o vain_a he_o account_v they_o to_o such_o who_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n already_o though_o he_o can_v but_o know_v they_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n as_o the_o chief_a mean_n for_o without_o understanding_n and_o where_o i_o have_v thrust_v in_o any_o of_o my_o word_n to_o abuse_v the_o scripture_n i_o can_v tell_v nor_o james_n naylor_n neither_o and_o therefore_o this_o be_v one_o of_o his_o many_o lie_n but_o he_o must_v say_v something_o else_o the_o quaker_n will_v suspect_v he_o that_o he_o have_v lead_v they_o wide_o as_o if_o they_o will_v but_o read_v his_o and_o i_o they_o may_v see_v who_o it_o be_v that_o have_v get_v the_o serpent_n subtlety_n to_o make_v evasion_n where_o he_o can_v answer_v and_o make_v lie_n and_o shift_n that_o be_v very_o poor_a what_o a_o poor_a shift_n be_v it_o to_o rail_v and_o revile_v in_o stead_n of_o rational_a answer_n i_o say_v in_o my_o book_n also_o that_o some_o man_n be_v sensual_a have_v not_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v not_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n give_v to_o every_o man_n to_o profit_v withal_o and_o who_o shall_v they_o profit_v if_o all_o be_v alike_o qualify_v and_o need_v no_o teach_n and_o be_v there_o not_o diversity_n of_o gift_n of_o that_o self_n same_o spirit_n and_o all_o for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n till_o we_o all_o grow_v up_o to_o a_o full_a stature_n which_o be_v not_o yet_o attain_v no_o not_o by_o naylor_n himself_o for_o all_o his_o boasting_n of_o infallibility_n and_o pureness_n from_o sin_n to_o all_o which_o he_o answer_v not_o a_o word_n but_o what_o be_v before_o recite_v which_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o the_o question_n propose_v but_o a_o poor_a rationles_a evasion_n nor_o can_v james_n naylor_n nor_o that_o lie_a spirit_n by_o who_o he_o be_v act_v with_o all_o his_o serpentine_a wisdom_n and_o policy_n evade_v the_o dint_n of_o these_o text_n of_o scripture_n but_o they_o quite_o overturn_v all_o his_o main_a doctrine_n against_o the_o use_n of_o mean_n for_o if_o these_o diversity_n of_o gift_n and_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v give_v of_o god_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o to_o profit_v withal_o then_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v employ_v for_o that_o very_a end_n and_o not_o to_o be_v put_v under_o a_o bushel_n nor_o hide_v as_o the_o talon_n but_o if_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n have_v think_v it_o fit_a to_o give_v gift_n unto_o man_n for_o edify_v of_o the_o body_n and_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o always_o have_v do_v and_o do_v still_o by_o instrumental_a mean_n communicate_v light_a and_o knowledge_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n to_o all_o his_o people_n and_o that_o by_o time_n and_o measure_n as_o it_o please_v he_o and_o by_o who_o he_o please_v be_v it_o not_o a_o high_a presumption_n in_o james_n naylor_n and_o his_o complice_n to_o deny_v such_o mean_n and_o instrument_n to_o be_v of_o any_o use_n in_o the_o church_n and_o go_v about_o to_o persuade_v all_o man_n to_o neglect_v and_o despise_v and_o disparage_v such_o mean_n and_o instrument_n what_o in_o they_o lie_v and_o only_o direct_v they_o to_o turn_v their_o mind_n inward_a to_o what_o light_n they_o have_v within_o and_o that_o already_o do_v they_o not_o herein_o manifest_o contradict_v the_o way_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n as_o account_v themselves_o wise_a than_o he_o and_o as_o if_o his_o gift_n be_v give_v in_o vain_a and_o not_o to_o be_v use_v or_o employ_v for_o any_o such_o end_n as_o to_o the_o use_n of_o edify_v and_o as_o account_v it_o needless_a that_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v do_v to_o the_o use_n of_o edify_v and_o that_o of_o the_o body_n yea_o that_o man_n shall_v edify_v one_o another_o in_o their_o most_o holy_a faith_n yea_o after_o they_o have_v faith_n they_o may_v be_v build_v up_o further_o and_o increase_v their_o faith_n and_o walk_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n till_o they_o be_v tall_a and_o strong_a and_o full_a of_o power_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n if_o they_o use_v such_o mean_n as_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v they_o but_o if_o all_o have_v light_a and_o that_o sufficient_a light_n already_o within_o what_o need_n be_v there_o then_o of_o edify_v one_o another_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n yea_o of_o those_o diversity_n of_o gift_n and_o administration_n and_o operation_n give_v forth_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n do_v not_o he_o that_o prophesi_v speak_v unto_o man_n to_o edification_n and_o exhortation_n and_o comfort_n and_o ought_v we_o not_o to_o covet_v earnest_o the_o best_a gift_n and_o be_v all_o prophet_n or_o all_o teacher_n to_o who_o then_o shall_v they_o prophesy_v or_o who_o shall_v they_o teach_v if_o all_o be_v one_o member_n where_o be_v the_o body_n if_o all_o be_v a_o eye_n where_o be_v the_o hear_n so_o if_o all_o be_v teacher_n where_o be_v the_o hearer_n who_o must_v learn_v if_o the_o ear_n shall_v say_v because_o i_o be_o not_o the_o eye_n i_o be_o not_o of_o the_o body_n be_v it_o therefore_o not_o of_o the_o body_n so_o say_v i_o if_o the_o hearer_n shall_v because_o i_o know_v that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n have_v so_o temper_v the_o body_n together_o as_o that_o the_o eye_n can_v say_v to_o the_o hand_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o thou_o neither_o the_o head_n to_o the_o foot_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o you_o and_o this_o he_o have_v do_v purposely_o that_o they_o may_v be_v no_o schism_n in_o the_o mystical_a body_n that_o be_v all_o baptize_v into_o one_o spirit_n see_v 1_o cor._n 12._o cha._n but_o if_o there_o be_v need_v one_o of_o another_o than_o we_o need_v help_v one_o of_o another_o both_o the_o hearer_n of_o their_o teacher_n and_o the_o teacher_n of_o their_o hearer_n teacher_n be_v as_o the_o eye_n for_o guidance_n and_o light_n of_o the_o body_n and_o hearer_n be_v as_o the_o ear_n which_o receive_v their_o teach_n and_o light_n and_o direction_n for_o understanding_n and_o practical_a obedience_n as_o from_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o till_o i_o shall_v be_v persuade_v that_o the_o wisdom_n of_o james_n naylor_n be_v above_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o lord_n himself_o i_o shall_v never_o believe_v that_o it_o come_v of_o wisdom_n to_o direct_v man_n only_o to_o a_o light_n within_o as_o their_o only_a guide_n and_o to_o neglect_v the_o ministration_n and_o teach_n of_o man_n and_o of_o the_o scripture_n as_o james_n naylor_n do_v and_o that_o without_o the_o least_o warrant_n or_o ground_n from_o scripture_n or_o reason_n either_o as_o have_v be_v show_v before_o nor_o have_v he_o yet_o do_v nor_o can_v he_o ever_o
show_v any_o the_o least_o scripture_n that_o so_o much_o as_o tend_v to_o such_o a_o doctrine_n nor_o his_o spirit_n neither_o but_o these_o evade_n shift_a revile_v answer_n in_o stead_n of_o pag._n 4_o and_o it_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o 12_o page_n of_o this_o his_o answer_n where_o he_o say_v speak_v of_o the_o devil_n that_o he_o will_v keep_v in_o the_o letter_n but_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o which_o the_o letter_n declare_v and_o say_v also_o to_o we_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n you_o have_v long_o count_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o the_o devil_n kingdom_n be_v stand_v still_o in_o the_o heart_n and_o so_o must_v be_v till_o there_o be_v account_n of_o the_o word_n that_o be_v near_a than_o the_o letter_n from_o all_o which_o expression_n it_o be_v clear_a that_o that_o which_o we_o call_v the_o scripture_n he_o call_v the_o letter_n and_o a_o dead_a letter_n now_o we_o call_v the_o content_n of_o the_o bible_n both_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o so_o he_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o they_o be_v now_o these_o scripture_n he_o ow_v but_o as_o carnal_a and_o a_o dead_a letter_n we_o call_v they_o spiritual_a and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n therefore_o he_o call_v all_o the_o scripture_n the_o letter_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v glad_a tiding_n and_o good_a news_n that_o shall_v be_v to_o all_o people_n the_o which_o be_v therefore_o call_v the_o gospel_n and_o it_o be_v write_v for_o our_o learning_n that_o we_o through_o patience_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o scripture_n may_v have_v hope_n the_o which_o gospel_n be_v also_o preach_v from_o the_o beginning_n yea_o even_o to_o adam_n and_o eve_n that_o they_o may_v have_v hope_n and_o comfort_v thereby_o to_o wit_n that_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n shall_v break_v the_o serpent_n head_n and_o we_o shall_v not_o deny_v that_o the_o gospel_n be_v spiritual_a and_o so_o be_v the_o law_n also_o but_o we_o must_v not_o deny_v but_o both_o this_o law_n and_o gospel_n be_v write_v for_o our_o learning_n and_o if_o they_o be_v write_v it_o must_v needs_o be_v legible_a to_o we_o or_o it_o will_v not_o serve_v for_o our_o learning_n if_o we_o want_v it_o for_o the_o present_a and_o have_v it_o not_o write_v in_o our_o heart_n for_o if_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v and_o so_o by_o read_v as_o so_o it_o do_v sometime_o than_o it_o enter_v first_o by_o the_o ear_n to_o wit_n by_o hear_v or_o else_o by_o the_o eye_n to_o wit_n by_o read_v and_o if_o we_o can_v read_v what_o be_v write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o one_o another_o not_o be_v omnitient_a but_o by_o hear_v they_o speak_v or_o see_v they_o act_n or_o read_v a_o express_a of_o their_o mind_n in_o writing_n how_o can_v we_o learn_v what_o be_v the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n from_o that_o which_o be_v write_v if_o it_o be_v not_o legible_a and_o that_o in_o letter_n suppose_v we_o as_o ignorant_a for_o the_o present_a not_o have_v either_o law_n or_o gospel_n as_o yet_o in_o our_o heart_n how_o shall_v we_o believe_v in_o he_o in_o who_o we_o have_v not_o hear_v imply_v that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v expect_v that_o all_o shall_v have_v it_o by_o immediate_a inspiration_n but_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o it_o preach_v which_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n whereby_o the_o lord_n convey_v it_o to_o the_o soul_n as_o have_v be_v show_v before_o and_o that_o from_o scripture_n ground_n now_o that_o which_o he_o call_v the_o letter_n we_o call_v the_o scripture_n and_o so_o it_o be_v for_o it_o be_v write_v and_o be_v therefore_o scripture_n because_o write_v yet_o we_o dare_v not_o call_v it_o a_o dead_a letter_n but_o lively_a oracle_n a_o spiritual_a word_n a_o word_n in_o which_o there_o be_v spirit_n and_o life_n to_o such_o as_o believe_v and_o receive_v they_o in_o love_n yea_o we_o do_v call_v the_o scripture_n the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o do_v but_o ask_v james_n naylor_n what_o else_o that_o be_v which_o be_v call_v by_o the_o apostle_n the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n if_o it_o be_v not_o the_o scripture_n yea_o that_o which_o be_v write_v in_o the_o bible_n which_o he_o call_v the_o letter_n see_v eph._n 6.17_o ask_v he_o i_o say_v whether_o this_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v mean_v of_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o essential_a word_n and_o who_o be_v the_o spirit_n or_o it_o be_v mean_v of_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v the_o express_a word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o as_o a_o sword_n or_o weapon_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o spirit_n both_o defensive_a and_o offensive_a against_o our_o adversary_n upon_o all_o occation_n yea_o christ_n himself_o use_v it_o against_o the_o devil_n when_o he_o tempt_v he_o and_o against_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o that_o as_o the_o best_a and_o fit_a weapon_n to_o encounter_v they_o with_o but_o if_o this_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o the_o spirit_n itself_o but_o the_o sword_n or_o instrument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o be_v call_v the_o word_n of_o god_n then_o it_o be_v not_o blasphemy_n but_o good_a scripture_n language_n to_o call_v the_o scripture_n the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o the_o blasphemy_n be_v they_o who_o call_v it_o carnal_a and_o a_o dead_a letter_n as_o have_v more_o large_o be_v show_v before_o in_o this_o treatise_n now_o in_o these_o expression_n of_o james_n naylor_n he_o deny_v to_o call_v any_o thing_n gospel_n but_o the_o spirit_n or_o any_o thing_n scripture_n but_o the_o spirit_n or_o any_o thing_n the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n with_o he_o and_o the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n contain_v therein_o must_v of_o necessity_n either_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o also_o god_n or_o but_o a_o dead_a letter_n and_o not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o not_o the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n wherein_o how_o clear_o contradict_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o confession_n as_o have_v be_v show_v before_o and_o also_o the_o plain_a express_a scripture_n as_o any_o rational_a man_n may_v easy_o perceive_v that_o will_v but_o read_v and_o consider_v so_o that_o his_o conviction_n be_v clear_a from_o his_o own_o confession_n concern_v these_o two_o main_a point_n of_o his_o doctrine_n which_o i_o may_v well_o call_v the_o main_a substance_n of_o that_o gospel_n which_o he_o preach_v and_o of_o all_o his_o book_n which_o he_o write_v namely_o to_o teach_v we_o to_o eye_n that_o spirit_n and_o word_n and_o light_v within_o and_o desert_n the_o scripture_n and_o the_o teach_n of_o man_n as_o a_o dead_a and_o vain_a and_o fruitless_a mean_n for_o lead_v into_o and_o guide_v in_o all_o the_o way_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n the_o which_o gospel_n i_o now_o leave_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o all_o that_o be_v true_o judicious_a whether_o it_o be_v not_o another_o gospel_n than_o the_o gospel_n of_o
every_o one_o have_v need_v but_o james_n naylor_n dare_v though_o he_o have_v his_o ground_n to_o seek_v for_o he_o show_v no_o reason_n worth_n mention_v i_o suppose_v he_o be_v afraid_a with_o judas_n lest_o he_o shall_v not_o seem_v charitable_a to_o the_o poor_a for_o under_o pretence_n of_o the_o poor_a so_o he_o can_v keep_v it_o from_o the_o minister_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o from_o christ_n himself_o he_o will_v have_v it_o for_o himself_o and_o the_o quaker-minister_n to_o fill_v their_o bag_n though_o they_o be_v thief_n and_o robber_n spiritual_o as_o judas_n be_v carnal_o for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o account_v no_o poor_a deserve_n nor_o no_o minister_n deserve_v but_o the_o quaker_n poor_a and_o minister_n though_o he_o say_v if_o they_o be_v find_v minister_n of_o christ_n far_o be_v it_o from_o i_o to_o hold_v from_o they_o that_o maintenance_n which_o christ_n ever_o allow_v his_o minister_n but_o that_o he_o allow_v none_o to_o be_v find_v his_o minister_n but_o the_o quaker-minister_n be_v evident_a for_o as_o for_o all_o such_o as_o preach_v in_o our_o public_a place_n which_o he_o call_v 〈◊〉_d our_o idol_n temple_n be_v condemn_v by_o he_o as_o minister_n of_o antichrist_n and_o not_o send_v of_o god_n so_o that_o he_o and_o i_o be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o accordance_n though_o he_o seem_v to_o grant_v to_o all_o that_o i_o plead_v for_o or_o ever_o intend_v it_o to_o wit_n such_o as_o be_v find_v to_o be_v minister_n of_o christ_n nor_o have_v i_o in_o the_o least_o plead_v for_o any_o other_o if_o they_o be_v know_v to_o be_v such_o and_o therefore_o though_o he_o imperious_o command_v i_o when_o i_o write_v again_o first_o to_o prove_v they_o so_o and_o then_o call_v they_o so_o i_o answer_v i_o call_v not_o any_o by_o name_n nor_o do_v i_o know_v but_o few_o of_o very_a many_o that_o be_v know_v faithful_a labourer_n in_o god_n harvest_n therefore_o i_o can_v enter_v into_o any_o particular_n it_o will_v be_v too_o large_a to_o prove_v every_o particular_a minister_n of_o christ_n send_v of_o god_n by_o the_o particular_a ground_n and_o reason_n to_o clear_v every_o man_n that_o yet_o be_v clear_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n but_o i_o be_o not_o so_o omnitient_a yet_o if_o i_o hear_v they_o preach_v in_o the_o clear_a evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o power_n by_o that_o i_o can_v know_v they_o though_o i_o can_v demonstrate_v the_o same_o unto_o james_n naylor_n as_o such_o i_o know_v many_o that_o preach_v in_o our_o public_a
