memory_n this_o be_v a_o natural_a strength_n or_o in_o other_o quality_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o else_o when_o a_o man_n be_v strong_a in_o the_o part_n of_o his_o body_n these_o be_v natural_a strength_n but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o strength_n that_o be_v here_o mean_v second_o there_o be_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n and_o this_o be_v two_o fold_n the_o first_o be_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n which_o be_v receive_v from_o the_o evil_a spirit_n which_o be_v when_o satan_n shall_v join_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n and_o add_v a_o supernatural_a strength_n and_o so_o make_v he_o to_o do_v more_o or_o suffer_v more_o than_o otherwise_o by_o nature_n he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v with_o this_o spirit_n be_v all_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o church_n strengthen_v paul_n the_o 7._o mean_n if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v get_v the_o spirit_n all_o other_o mean_n will_v nothing_o avail_v you_o except_o you_o get_v this_o for_o this_o be_v that_o that_o make_v they_o effectual_a and_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o man_n samson_n be_v strong_a and_o so_o be_v other_o man_n but_o samson_n be_v strong_a than_o be_v this_o by_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n a_o effectual_a operative_a and_o digestive_a faculty_n that_o be_v by_o rear_v the_o inward_a man_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o set_v up_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o shed_v abroad_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o bless_a effect_n of_o grace_n into_o every_o faculty_n even_o as_o the_o blood_n be_v in_o use_v into_o every_o vain_a or_o as_o the_o soul_n go_v through_o every_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o give_v life_n unto_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n go_v through_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n and_o power_n into_o they_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o in_o the_o ephes_n 4._o his_o effectual_a power_n that_o be_v 4._o he_o have_v such_o efficacy_n in_o work_v that_o he_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o the_o soul._n the_o second_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n be_v this_o wor._n when_o he_o have_v set_v up_o the_o building_n and_o sweep_v every_o corner_n of_o the_o soul_n then_o he_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n that_o be_v by_o put_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n into_o the_o soul_n as_o first_o when_o a_o man_n can_v do_v no_o more_o than_o a_o natural_a man_n can_v do_v by_o nature_n than_o the_o spirit_n fortify_v and_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o act_v holy_o and_o spiritual_o as_o for_o example_n any_o hand_n can_v cut_v with_o a_o cheesil_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v art_n and_o time_n about_o it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o can_v natural_o do_v water_n you_o know_v of_o itself_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n in_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o that_o be_v whether_o you_o have_v new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v as_o i_o say_v it_o first_o build_v the_o house_n and_o sweep_v the_o room_n and_o then_o it_o fill_v and_o furnish_v the_o room_n with_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n be_v this_o when_o it_o have_v give_v we_o new_a habit_n than_o it_o enable_v wor._n and_o help_v we_o to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a when_o we_o have_v they_o for_o herein_o appear_v the_o power_n and_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o the_o use_n of_o that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v of_o power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o so_o it_o be_v with_o those_o that_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v power_n withal_o to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v and_o use_v those_o habit_n that_o be_v in_o they_o
assume_v body_n and_o show_v of_o grace_n that_o be_v a_o common_a spirit_n without_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o property_n of_o assume_v body_n they_o be_v unconstant_a that_o be_v purge_v by_o they_o again_o they_o may_v walk_v as_o a_o live_a man_n walk_v that_o be_v perform_v holy_a duty_n but_o they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o holy_a duty_n neither_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o in_o obedience_n but_o out_o of_o self_n love_n that_o be_v they_o be_v still_o ebb_v and_o seldom_o flow_v they_o omit_v ostner_o than_o they_o perform_v therefore_o let_v i_o exhort_v you_o the_o spirit_n but_o because_o they_o know_v he_o not_o that_o be_v they_o do_v not_o know_v he_o in_o his_o purity_n in_o his_o free_a work_n in_o his_o incomprehensible_a greatness_n in_o his_o increase_n in_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o they_o put_v off_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n when_o man_n think_v now_o that_o their_o sin_n in_o this_o kind_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o simon_n magus_n be_v it_o be_v true_a say_v they_o simon_n magus_n his_o sin_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n and_o worthy_a of_o punishment_n because_o he_o think_v to_o have_v buy_v the_o spirit_n with_o money_n but_o if_o we_o will_v consider_v man_n deal_n now_o with_o the_o spirit_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o same_o sin_n be_v commit_v still_o i_o say_v man_n think_v that_o they_o do_v not_o commit_v the_o sin_n of_o simon_n magus_n when_o indeed_o you_o do_v you_o know_v how_o great_a the_o sin_n be_v in_o he_o and_o what_o a_o judgement_n be_v inflict_v against_o he_o and_o your_o sin_n be_v as_o great_a and_o the_o same_o but_o you_o know_v they_o not_o therefore_o let_v we_o compare_v they_o together_o and_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o they_o be_v all_o one_o and_o that_o in_o these_o three_o particular_n first_o simon_n magus_n think_v that_o the_o spirit_n may_v have_v be_v have_v at_o any_o time_n for_o he_o neglect_v the_o mean_n and_o despise_v it_o presuppose_v that_o at_o therefore_o he_o ask_v peter_n what_o he_o shall_v give_v for_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v not_o your_o sin_n the_o 2._o same_o do_v not_o many_o man_n think_v that_o it_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v can_v you_o tell_v i_o of_o any_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o the_o like_a three_o simon_n magus_n desire_v the_o spirit_n to_o a_o wrong_a end_n namely_o for_o his_o own_o advantage_n that_o upon_o who_o soever_o he_o shall_v lay_v his_o hand_n they_o may_v receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n 3._o and_o do_v not_o man_n do_v the_o like_a now_o they_o desire_v mean_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v receive_v you_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o else_o by_o faith_n preach_v gal._n 3._o that_o be_v you_o may_v know_v whether_o you_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o no_o by_o this_o 3._o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v get_v â—aith_n by_o the_o preach_a of_o the_o word_n our_o saviour_n say_v that_o the_o tree_n be_v know_v by_o his_o fruit_n that_o be_v the_o branch_n can_v bear_v fruit_n except_o it_o receive_v virtue_n and_o strength_n from_o the_o root_n so_o if_o we_o get_v not_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o be_v join_v with_o he_o we_o shall_v never_o get_v the_o spirit_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v get_v the_o spirit_n you_o must_v get_v faith_n for_o faith_n be_v the_o knit_n and_o the_o draw_v grace_n it_o will_v draw_v the_o spirit_n into_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o will_v knit_v he_o fast_o unto_o the_o soul_n that_o it_o can_v never_o depart_v from_o it_o faith_n will_v recover_v the_o spirit_n if_o it_o seem_v to_o want_v his_o power_n of_o work_v in_o the_o soul_n it_o will_v return_v he_o if_o he_o seem_v to_o depart_v away_o it_o will_v enlarge_v the_o heart_n if_o the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o be_v scant_v in_o it_o that_o be_v it_o will_v widen_v the_o narrow_a bottle_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o you_o know_v what_o our_o saviour_n say_v to_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o gospel_n be_v it_o unto_o you_o according_a to_o your_o faith_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v get_v the_o spirit_n you_o must_v get_v faith_n in_o your_o heart_n that_o be_v if_o you_o will_v get_v a_o large_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o get_v a_o large_a measure_n of_o faith_n for_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n thrive_v not_o in_o the_o spirit_n but_o for_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o mean_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n a_o instance_n of_o this_o we_o find_v in_o elishaes_n servant_n he_o earnest_o desire_v and_o pray_v that_o the_o spirit_n 〈◊〉_d eliah_n his_o master_n may_v be_v double_v upon_o he_o not_o that_o he_o mean_v that_o he_o may_v have_v as_o much_o more_o again_o but_o that_o he_o may_v have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o other_o of_o the_o prophet_n and_o he_o do_v obtain_v his_o desire_n for_o he_o be_v endue_v with_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o other_o of_o the_o prophet_n be_v even_o so_o if_o you_o will_v but_o desire_v and_o pray_v earnest_o for_o the_o spirit_n you_o may_v get_v he_o solomon_n desire_v wisdom_n and_o pray_v for_o it_o and_o he_o have_v it_o and_o that_o in_o a_o large_a measure_n than_o those_o that_o go_v before_o he_o so_o if_o you_o will_v pray_v for_o the_o spirit_n you_o have_v his_o promise_n in_o luke_n 11._o 14._o that_o he_o will_v give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n unto_o they_o 14._o that_o ask_v he_o and_o this_o he_o do_v speak_v by_o way_n of_o opposition_n if_o you_o that_o be_v evil_a can_v give_v good_a thing_n unto_o your_o child_n then_o doubt_n as_o when_o the_o debtor_n see_v the_o king_n son_n that_o be_v his_o surety_n at_o liberty_n and_o in_o the_o king_n court_n he_o fear_v not_o but_o his_o debt_n be_v pay_v so_o when_o the_o poor_a believer_n see_v christ_n set_v free_a from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o grave_n etc._n etc._n he_o know_v god_n have_v accept_v the_o payment_n he_o have_v make_v as_o sufficient_a for_o he_o let_v we_o therefore_o look_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o have_v a_o part_n in_o christ_n and_o know_v whatsoever_o he_o do_v it_o be_v for_o we_o even_o for_o every_o true_a believer_n so_o that_o he_o that_o we_o shall_v never_o die_v eternal_o a_o three_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o the_o sit_v of_o christ_n at_o reason_n the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n which_o put_v all_o out_o of_o question_n
