the_o magistrate_n concern_v in_o christ_n kingdom_n a_o sermon_n preach_v at_o the_o assize_n at_o winchester_n july_n 14._o 1697._o by_o roger_n farbrother_n vicar_n of_o holy-rhoods_a in_o southampton_n london_n print_v for_o william_n keblewhite_n at_o the_o swan_n in_o st._n paul_n churchyard_n m_o dc_o xc_o viii_o to_o the_o worshipful_a alexander_n alchorne_n esquire_n high_a sheriff_n of_o hampshire_n sir_n it_o be_v at_o your_o desire_n that_o this_o discourse_n be_v prepare_v it_o appear_v at_o the_o assize_n with_o your_o approbation_n and_o now_o at_o length_n in_o public_a by_o your_o command_n it_o be_v aim_n be_v to_o make_v the_o magistrate_n duty_n christian_n by_o lay_v before_o he_o the_o relation_n he_o bear_v to_o the_o great_a mediatorial_n king_n the_o honourable_a trust_n he_o be_v advance_v to_o in_o his_o household_n what_o service_n he_o owe_v his_o church_n and_o be_v capable_a of_o do_v for_o she_o in_o which_o consist_v the_o great_a dignity_n of_o his_o office_n and_o without_o which_o it_o will_v remain_v heathen_a still_o and_o how_o weak_a soever_o the_o performance_n may_v be_v or_o how_o unfit_a for_o the_o press_n for_o which_o you_o be_v answerable_a who_o have_v promote_v the_o publication_n and_o carry_v it_o beyond_o its_o design_n yet_o the_o foundation_n i_o doubt_v not_o will_v prove_v good_a and_o this_o weak_a essay_n if_o it_o can_v attain_v no_o further_o may_v at_o least_o provoke_v some_o able_a hand_n to_o set_v this_o seasonable_a truth_n in_o a_o better_a light_n whereby_o some_o good_a may_v accrue_v to_o the_o public_a herein_o which_o by_o whosoever_o convey_v will_v be_v high_o acceptable_a i_o know_v to_o you_o and_o to_o all_o the_o true_a son_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n particular_o to_o sir_n your_o most_o faithful_a and_o humble_a servant_n r._n farbrother_n psal._n ii_o xii_o kiss_v the_o son_n lest_o he_o be_v angry_a and_o you_o perish_v from_o the_o way_n the_o psalmist_n here_o whether_o by_o extatick_a rapture_n or_o by_o the_o soft_a whisper_v and_o inspiration_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n more_o common_a to_o he_o be_v favour_v with_o a_o prospect_n of_o the_o messiah_n kingdom_n of_o its_o rise_n and_o power_n a_o kingdom_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o delight_n of_o all_o mankind_n as_o well_o as_o the_o glory_n of_o their_o maker_n who_o will_v erect_v it_o over_o which_o the_o infinite_a father_n will_v set_v his_o equal_o infinite_a son_n who_o be_v qualify_v for_o a_o perfect_a government_n and_o to_o enrich_v all_o mankind_n from_o his_o own_o bounty_n and_o fullness_n and_o in_o the_o emanation_n of_o which_o god_n will_v erect_v to_o himself_o bright_a trophy_n of_o glory_n and_o address_v more_o powerful_o to_o the_o love_n and_o admiration_n of_o all_o rational_a and_o intelligent_a being_n than_o he_o have_v do_v in_o that_o great_a work_n of_o creation_n one_o thing_n there_o be_v in_o this_o great_a work_n which_o show_v it_o to_o be_v more_o than_o humane_a a_o thing_n so_o unlikely_a in_o reason_n to_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o it_o can_v never_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o prophet_n thought_n have_v not_o some_o be_v of_o high_a rank_n and_o great_a foresight_n discover_v it_o which_o may_v have_v tempt_v the_o prophet_n to_o and_o almost_o have_v excuse_v he_o in_o the_o disbelief_n of_o the_o whole_a scene_n and_o which_o may_v seem_v so_o strange_a to_o we_o that_o do_v not_o our_o time_n produce_v instance_n of_o it_o more_o than_o enough_o we_o shall_v hardly_o believe_v those_o history_n that_o do_v relate_v it_o viz._n that_o when_o god_n will_v erect_v a_o kingdom_n so_o glorious_a and_o so_o great_a redound_v every_o way_n to_o the_o honour_n and_o advantage_n of_o mankind_n will_v repair_v our_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o miserable_a state_n make_v we_o a_o gracious_a tender_a of_o all_o the_o happiness_n both_o of_o this_o and_o of_o a_o future_a life_n and_o this_o by_o the_o wise_a and_o gracious_a government_n of_o his_o own_o infinite_a son_n who_o first_o shall_v signify_v his_o love_n by_o such_o a_o surprise_a instance_n as_o to_o lay_v down_o his_o worthy_a life_n a_o ransom_n for_o we_o by_o who_o also_o the_o father_n will_v give_v we_o a_o most_o perfect_a law_n and_o make_v we_o proposal_n of_o the_o great_a good_a that_o yet_o this_o kingdom_n of_o his_o son_n erect_v for_o these_o gracious_a purpose_n shall_v find_v violent_a opposition_n from_o man_n and_o that_o not_o only_o the_o rude_a people_n but_o their_o governor_n also_o shall_v conspire_v against_o it_o and_o with_o attempt_n as_o furious_a as_o they_o be_v unreasonable_a and_o vain_a oppose_v the_o omnipotent_a hand_n and_o ward_v off_o the_o offer_a mercy_n that_o god_n shall_v be_v so_o careful_a to_o do_v man_n the_o great_a good_a and_o man_n shall_v be_v as_o diligent_a to_o frustrate_v and_o prevent_v it_o this_o though_o by_o our_o constant_a experience_n it_o be_v become_v familiar_a to_o we_o yet_o as_o it_o betray_v the_o overgrow_a corruption_n of_o our_o state_n so_o to_o any_o man_n that_o have_v a_o competent_a sense_n of_o those_o mercy_n which_o the_o father_n tender_v to_o all_o mankind_n in_o the_o erection_n of_o this_o kingdom_n of_o his_o son_n it_o may_v just_o seem_v a_o wonder_n with_o admiration_n at_o this_o folly_n and_o ingratitude_n david_n begin_v this_o psalm_n why_o do_v the_o heathen_a rage_n and_o the_o people_n imagine_v a_o vain_a thing_n the_o king_n of_o the_o earth_n set_v themselves_o and_o the_o ruler_n take_v counsel_n together_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o against_o his_o anoint_v say_v let_v we_o break_v their_o band_n asunder_o and_o cast_v away_o their_o cord_n from_o we_o whilst_o yet_o these_o cord_n be_v only_o the_o cord_n of_o love_n of_o a_o love_n strong_a than_o death_n free_a and_o generous_a and_o the_o glory_n of_o its_o infinite_a author_n and_o these_o band_n be_v the_o wholesome_a law_n of_o the_o gospel_n just_a and_o reasonable_a such_o as_o the_o magistrate_n need_v not_o to_o be_v jealous_a of_o nor_o the_o people_n uneasy_a under_o admirable_o adapt_v to_o our_o nature_n and_o condition_n to_o make_v we_o happy_a here_o and_o to_o dispose_v and_o fit_v we_o for_o that_o complete_a felicity_n hereafter_o to_o bring_v we_o to_o which_o be_v the_o great_a end_n for_o which_o this_o holy_a oeconomy_n and_o spiritual_a kingdom_n be_v erect_v wherefore_o the_o psalmist_n to_o let_v they_o know_v how_o vain_a and_o dangerous_a this_o their_o opposition_n will_v be_v tell_v they_o that_o this_o promise_a king_n be_v the_o only_a son_n of_o the_o high_a and_o great_a creator_n who_o sceptre_n as_o it_o be_v right_a so_o it_o be_v divine_a too_o will_v extend_v its_o dominion_n over_o all_o nation_n and_o break_v in_o piece_n all_o that_o shall_v oppose_v it_o and_o because_o he_o foresee_v that_o this_o opposition_n will_v chief_o be_v form_v by_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n therefore_o he_o address_v to_o they_o to_o persuade_v they_o as_o a_o consequence_n of_o all_o this_o to_o pay_v a_o voluntary_a homage_n and_o love_a submission_n to_o this_o great_a prince_n to_o promote_v his_o government_n and_o to_o seek_v his_o favour_n kiss_v the_o son_n lest_o he_o be_v angry_a and_o you_o perish_v from_o the_o way_n before_o i_o come_v to_o form_v my_o exhortation_n it_o may_v be_v necessary_a and_o i_o shall_v do_v it_o brief_o first_o to_o explain_v the_o term_n and_o to_o show_v who_o be_v the_o person_n speak_v to_o who_o this_o son_n or_o the_o person_n speak_v of_o what_o it_o be_v to_o kiss_v the_o son_n and_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o perish_v from_o the_o way_n 1._o who_o the_o person_n here_o exhort_v be_v appear_v from_o v._o 10._o be_v wise_a now_o o_o you_o king_n be_v instruct_v you_o judge_n of_o the_o earth_n serve_v the_o lord_n with_o fear_n and_o rejoice_v with_o tremble_a kiss_v the_o son_n etc._n etc._n answerable_a to_o that_o v._o 2._o the_o king_n of_o the_o earth_n set_v themselves_o and_o the_o ruler_n take_v counsel_n together_o which_o we_o find_v apply_v act._n 4._o to_o herod_n and_o pontius_n pilate_n the_o ruler_n of_o the_o jew_n the_o elder_n and_o scribe_n whilst_o they_o be_v form_v their_o several_a opposition_n and_o persecution_n against_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n so_o that_o by_o king_n and_o ruler_n in_o the_o second_o v._o that_o oppose_v this_o messiah_n and_o his_o kingdom_n by_o king_n and_o judge_n in_o the_o 10_o v._o that_o be_v exhort_v to_o a_o better_a carriage_n to_o submit_v to_o this_o government_n and_o to_o kiss_v the_o son_n be_v mean_v magistrate_n of_o all_o rank_n not_o only_o king_n the_o supreme_a but_o all_o subordinate_a magistrate_n also_o to_o which_o be_v commit_v in_o any_o degree_n the_o execution_n of_o the_o law_n 2_o who_o this_o son_n be_v the_o ancient_a jew_n
