accept_v of_o his_o death_n for_o a_o ransom_n and_o what_o will_v you_o have_v more_o the_o party_n offend_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v in_o friendship_n with_o the_o offend_a party_n and_o to_o give_v and_o accept_v of_o the_o satisfaction_n what_o can_v tentation_n say_v or_o what_o ground_n be_v for_o jealousy_n to_o vent_v itself_o here_o he_o that_o do_v not_o spare_v his_o own_o son_n but_o willing_o and_o free_o give_v he_o to_o death_n for_o we_o all_o how_o shall_v be_v not_o with_o he_o also_o free_o give_v we_o all_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v rom._n 8._o and_o if_o we_o be_v reconcil_v of_o this_o we_o will_v propose_v these_o consideration_n 1._o that_o it_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n that_o the_o person_n that_o be_v the_o mediator_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o woriship_n and_o may_v be_v pray_v unto_o because_o he_o be_v god_n the_o second_o person_n of_o the_o godhead_n and_o therefore_o act._n 7._o at_o the_o close_a a_o direct_a prayer_n be_v put_v up_o to_o he_o by_o stephen_n lord_n jesus_n say_v he_o receive_v my_o spirit_n 2._o we_o say_v this_o that_o the_o adoration_n and_o worship_n that_o be_v give_v to_o the_o mediator_n be_v not_o of_o any_o distinct_a although_o as_o mediator_n he_o be_v inferior_a to_o the_o father_n yet_o the_o person_n who_o we_o worship_v be_v god_n equal_a with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n 3._o the_o worship_v of_o jesus_n christ_n mediator_n and_o the_o give_v of_o he_o divine_a worship_n be_v not_o the_o worship_v of_o any_o other_o object_n but_o of_o the_o same_o to_o wit_n god_n who_o be_v make_v flesh_n and_o be_v manifest_v in_o our_o nature_n by_o the_o union_n of_o the_o second_o person_n of_o the_o godhead_n with_o the_o humane_a nature_n which_o he_o have_v assume_v and_o take_v to_o he_o upon_o which_o it_o follow_v that_o jesus_n christ_n must_v be_v the_o same_o object_n of_o worship_n and_o that_o our_o worship_v of_o he_o be_v the_o worship_v of_o god_n and_o that_o our_o mediator_n thought_n may_v steal_v in_o as_o if_o we_o be_v not_o so_o immediate_o and_o direct_o speak_v to_o god_n as_o when_o we_o name_v the_o father_n 4._o consider_v that_o christ_n jesus_n be_v worship_v with_o this_o divine_a worship_n as_o the_o one_o object_n of_o worship_n for_o as_o we_o show_v there_o can_v be_v two_o object_n of_o divine_a worship_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o christ_n jesus_n as_o god_n be_v worship_v for_o though_o it_o be_v the_o person_n that_o be_v mediator_n and_o man_n that_o be_v worship_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o the_o person_n as_o man_n but_o as_o god_n that_o be_v worship_v and_o the_o reason_n be_v clear_a because_o it_o be_v not_o christ_n jesus_n as_o man_n but_o as_o god_n that_o have_v these_o property_n of_o god_n to_o be_v omni-scient_a omni-potent_a infinite_a supreme_a adorable_a etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o as_o upon_o the_o one_o hand_n we_o say_v that_o christ_n god_n die_v and_o suffer_v because_o he_o be_v god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n the_o person_n that_o be_v and_o be_v god_n die_v and_o suffer_v though_o the_o godhead_n do_v not_o neither_o can_v suffer_v so_o upon_o the_o other_o hand_n we_o say_v that_o christ_n man_n be_v pray_v unto_o because_o he_o who_o be_v god_n man_n be_v pray_v unto_o as_o god_n but_o though_o there_o be_v a_o union_n of_o the_o two_o nature_n in_o the_o mediator_n person_n it_o be_v possible_a for_o we_o to_o clear_v it_o we_o must_v conceive_v in_o our_o worship_v of_o god_n in_o the_o person_n of_o a_o mediator_n a_o threefold_a object_n of_o our_o worship_n for_o so_o divine_v use_v to_o distinguish_v and_o we_o hold_v we_o close_o by_o they_o 1._o the_o material_a object_n or_o the_o object_n which_o we_o worship_v that_o be_v the_o person_n we_o pray_v to_o prejudice_n that_o come_v through_o folk_n want_v of_o thorough_a clearness_n in_o and_o assurance_n of_o this_o truth_n 1._o to_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n there_o be_v this_o prejudice_n and_o difference_n put_v betwixt_o the_o outward_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o this_o inward_a powerful_a efficacious_a work_n of_o grace_n on_o the_o heart_n and_o wherein_o the_o great_a weight_n of_o conversion_n be_v lay_v on_o this_o inward_a work_n and_o not_o on_o the_o outward_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n as_o deut_n 29.4_o where_o the_o lord_n by_o moses_n tell_v the_o people_n how_o many_o thing_n they_o have_v see_v and_o hear_v and_o yet_o say_v he_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o give_v you_o a_o heart_n to_o perceive_v and_o eye_n to_o see_v and_o ear_n to_o hear_v the_o scripture_n for_o hold_v forth_o this_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o conversion_n that_o point_n out_o not_o only_o a_o hand_n work_v and_o a_o work_n wrought_v but_o a_o inward_a in_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n and_o in_o work_a conversion_n it_o be_v not_o a_o mediate_a work_n whereby_o he_o only_o persuade_v congruous_o as_o some_o love_n to_o speak_v but_o a_o immediate_a and_o efficacious_a work_n whereby_o with_o mighty_a power_n he_o work_v conversion_n it_o be_v god_n say_v the_o apostle_n phil._n 2_o 13._o that_o work_v in_o you_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n and_o as_o he_o not_o only_o persuade_v but_o effectual_o work_v so_o he_o not_o only_a work_n on_o the_o judgement_n to_o the_o enlighten_v of_o it_o but_o on_o immediate_o in_o work_v faith_n and_o convert_n of_o sinner_n the_o first_o be_v draw_v from_o the_o exceed_a great_a deadness_n indisposition_n averness_n perverseness_n impotency_n inability_n impossibility_n that_o be_v in_o we_o natural_o for_o the_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o christ_n if_o man_n natural_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o trespass_n if_o the_o mind_n be_v blind_a if_o the_o affection_n be_v quite_o disorder_v and_o if_o the_o will_v be_v utter_o corrupt_v and_o pervert_v then_o that_o which_o convert_v and_o change_n and_o renew_v they_o must_v be_v a_o real_a inward_a peculiar_a immediate_a powerful_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o inward_a seed_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o be_v quicken_v that_o seed_n must_v be_v communicate_v to_o they_o and_o sow_v in_o they_o ere_o they_o can_v believe_v which_o can_v be_v do_v by_o no_o less_o nor_o low_a power_n than_o this_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n it_o be_v not_o and_o wrought_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n leave_v nothing_o to_o man_n freewill_n to_o difference_n himself_o from_o another_o or_o on_o which_o such_o a_o effect_n shall_v depend_v but_o if_o we_o look_v to_o scripture_n we_o will_v find_v that_o its_o god_n end_n in_o the_o whole_a way_n and_o conduct_v of_o his_o grace_n in_o election_n redemption_n call_v justification_n etc._n etc._n to_o commend_v his_o grace_n solly_n and_o to_o stop_v all_o mouth_n and_o to_o cut_v off_o all_o ground_n of_o boast_v in_o the_o creature_n as_o it_o be_v 2_o cor._n 4.7_o who_o make_v thou_o to_o differ_v from_o another_o and_o what_o have_v thou_o that_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v now_o if_o thou_o do_v receive_v it_o why_o do_v thou_o glory_n as_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o receive_v this_o be_v certain_a that_o if_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o conversion_n be_v not_o a_o distinct_a inward_a peculiar_a real_a immediate_a work_n and_o do_v not_o produce_v the_o effect_n of_o itself_o by_o its_o own_o strength_n and_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o any_o thing_n in_o man_n the_o man_n will_v still_o be_v suppose_v to_o have_v have_v some_o power_n for_o the_o work_n in_o himself_o and_o some_o way_n to_o have_v difference_v himself_o from_o another_o but_o the_o lord_n have_v design_v the_o contrary_a and_o therefore_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o conversion_n must_v be_v suitable_a to_o his_o design_n use_v 1_o the_o first_o use_n be_v for_o the_o refutation_n of_o several_a error_n and_o for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o a_o great_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o we_o profess_v it_o serve_v i_o say_v first_o for_o the_o refutation_n of_o error_n which_o in_o such_o a_o auditory_a we_o love_v not_o to_o insist_v on_o yet_o we_o can_v here_o the_o ground_n be_v so_o clear_a and_o the_o call_v so_o cogent_a forbear_v to_o say_v somewhat_o brief_o this_o way_n and_o the_o rather_o that_o the_o devil_n have_v take_v many_o waâ—s_n and_o drive_v many_o design_n to_o weaken_v the_o estimation_n of_o god_n grace_n among_o man_n and_o to_o exalt_v proud_a nature_n and_o that_o there_o be_v here_o a_o collection_n and_o concatenation_n of_o these_o design_n and_o way_n against_o the_o truth_n which_o this_o doctrine_n hold_v forth_o vent_v by_o corrupt_a men._n as_o 1._o they_o will_v have_v nothing_o to_o be_v necessary_o apply_v for_o the_o work_n of_o conversion_n buâ—_n the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o all_o man_n have_v universal_a or_o common_a grace_n which_o god_n by_o his_o sovereignty_n say_v they_o be_v oblige_v to_o give_v else_o he_o can_v not_o not_o reasonable_o require_v faith_n of_o they_o and_o upon_o this_o come_v in_o the_o plead_v for_o power_n of_o freewill_n and_o man_n ability_n to_o turn_v himself_o to_o god_n other_o by_o plead_v for_o this_o notion_n of_o a_o light_n within_o man_n become_v to_o be_v patron_n of_o proud_a and_o petulant_a corrupt_a nature_n as_o if_o there_o be_v need_n of_o nothing_o to_o beget_v save_v faith_n but_o that_o common_a grace_n within_o and_o oratory_n or_o suasion_n of_o mouth_n from_o without_o and_o hence_o they_o come_v to_o maintain_v the_o foul_a error_n which_o have_v not_o only_o be_v condemn_v by_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o all_o age_n bâ—t_o have_v even_o by_o some_o papist_n be_v abominate_v and_o many_o of_o these_o same_o error_n be_v creep_v in_o even_o in_o these_o time_n wherein_o we_o live_v the_o design_n whereof_o be_v to_o tempt_v folk_n to_o turn_v loose_a vain_a and_o proud_a and_o to_o turn_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n into_o wantonness_n as_o if_o they_o need_v not_o at_o all_o to_o depend_v on_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n have_v a_o sufficient_a stock_n within_o themselves_o on_o which_o they_o can_v live_v well_o enough_o and_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o error_n of_o papist_n pelagian_o socinian_o arminian_o or_o error_n in_o the_o judgement_n that_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o but_o of_o such_o as_o overturn_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o the_o work_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o who_o though_o pretend_v to_o high_a notion_n do_v yet_o go_v beyond_o all_o these_o but_o if_o it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o the_o work_n of_o conversion_n beside_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n there_o be_v a_o distinct_a real_a inward_a peculiar_a immediate_a efficacious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n necessary_a for_o bring_v about_o such_o a_o effect_n then_o there_o be_v no_o common_a and_o universal_a grace_n that_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v nor_o be_v there_o any_o power_n or_o ability_n in_o man_n to_o believe_v of_o himself_o otherwise_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o such_o a_o work_n as_o this_o for_o the_o convert_n of_o a_o sinner_n the_o prophet_n need_v not_o to_o cry_v who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v and_o christ_n need_v not_o say_v no_o man_n can_v come_v to_o i_o except_o the_o father_n draw_v he_o for_o man_n may_v come_v without_o draw_v and_o believe_v without_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n arm_n but_o in_o opposition_n to_o that_o we_o say_v and_o have_v make_v it_o clear_a that_o the_o work_n of_o conversion_n be_v bring_v about_o by_o a_o distinct_a peculiar_a powerful_a real_a and_o immediate_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n on_o the_o heart_n whereby_o he_o not_o only_o enlighten_v the_o mind_n but_o renew_v the_o will_n and_o rectify_v the_o affection_n 2._o there_o be_v another_o error_n that_o this_o refute_v which_o seem_v to_o be_v more_o subtle_a for_o some_o will_v grant_v a_o necessary_a connexion_n betwixt_o the_o effect_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n who_o yet_o say_v that_o it_o be_v suasion_n or_o persuasion_n for_o here_o we_o take_v these_o for_o the_o same_o so_o and_o so_o try_v to_o prevail_v with_o some_o that_o bring_v about_o the_o effect_n or_o work_v of_o conversion_n in_o they_o and_o not_o in_o other_o where_o that_o persuasion_n be_v not_o so_o try_v but_o this_o opinion_n lay_v not_o the_o weight_n of_o conversion_n on_o the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o on_o some_o circumstance_n accompany_v the_o work_n and_o leave_v still_o some_o ground_n of_o boast_v in_o the_o creature_n 3._o a_o three_o error_n which_o this_o doctrine_n refute_v be_v that_o of_o some_o other_o who_o will_v have_v grace_n necessary_o to_o go_v along_v with_o the_o word_n in_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n but_o so_o as_o it_o reach_v not_o the_o will_n but_o that_o the_o will_v necessary_o determine_v itself_o as_o if_o the_o will_n be_v not_o corrupt_v or_o as_o if_o that_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o will_n be_v indeed_o no_o corruption_n as_o if_o that_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o will_n can_v be_v any_o more_o remove_v from_o the_o will_n without_o the_o immediate_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o it_o than_o darkness_n can_v be_v remove_v from_o the_o judgement_n without_o the_o spirit_n immediate_a work_n on_o it_o but_o see_v the_o will_n be_v the_o prime_a seat_n of_o man_n perverseness_n while_o in_o nature_n and_o the_o principal_a part_n to_o be_v renew_v it_o be_v a_o strange_a thing_n to_o say_v that_o in_o the_o work_n of_o conversion_n other_o faculty_n and_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v renew_v and_o yet_o that_o this_o which_o come_v near_a to_o
the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v neglect_v or_o not_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o renovation_n but_o from_o this_o text_n it_o be_v clear_a that_o in_o conversion_n the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v be_v reveal_v and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o powerful_a work_n of_o grace_n that_o not_o only_o present_v reason_n from_o the_o word_n to_o move_v the_o will_n but_o real_o regenerate_v and_o renew_v the_o will_n now_o what_o be_v for_o the_o refutation_n of_o it_o these_o error_n serve_v also_o to_o confirm_v we_o in_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n opposite_a to_o these_o error_n 2._o it_o serve_v to_o refute_v something_o in_o folk_n practise_v and_o that_o be_v their_o little_a sense_n of_o the_o need_n of_o grace_n most_o part_n come_v and_o hear_v preach_v as_o if_o they_o have_v the_o habit_n of_o faith_n and_o as_o if_o it_o be_v natural_a to_o they_o and_o pretend_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n never_o once_o suspect_v their_o want_n of_o faith_n nor_o think_v that_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o such_o a_o work_n of_o grace_n to_o work_v it_o in_o they_o as_o if_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o not_o to_o believe_v hence_o many_o think_v that_o they_o have_v grace_n enough_o and_o if_o they_o pray_v it_o be_v that_o they_o may_v do_v well_o never_o mind_v the_o corruption_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o such_o person_n fall_v ready_o into_o error_n when_o their_o practice_n say_v plain_o they_o think_v they_o have_v grace_n enough_o already_o the_o second_o doctrine_n be_v that_o this_o distinct_a real_a inward_a efficacious_a powerful_a work_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o conversion_n be_v not_o common_a to_o all_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n apply_v but_o to_o few_o it_o be_v even_o as_o rare_a as_o faith_n be_v and_o what_o we_o touch_v on_o to_o evidence_n the_o rarity_n of_o faith_n will_v serve_v also_o to_o evidence_n the_o rarity_n of_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o conversion_n it_o be_v on_o as_o many_o as_o be_v believer_n and_o be_v save_v that_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n be_v reveal_v and_o no_o more_o jer._n 3.14_o i_o will_v take_v one_o of_o a_o city_n and_o two_o of_o a_o family_n and_o bring_v you_o to_o zion_n say_v the_o lord_n it_o be_v two_o or_o three_o in_o the_o corner_n of_o a_o paroch_n or_o in_o the_o end_n of_o a_o town_n to_o speak_v so_o who_o be_v convert_v and_o the_o rest_n be_v suffer_v to_o lie_v in_o black_a nature_n if_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v erquire_v after_o this_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o stop_v all_o mouth_n which_o the_o lord_n give_v mat._n 11.28_o even_o so_o father_n for_o so_o it_o seem_v good_a in_o thy_o sight_n it_o be_v of_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v debtor_n to_o none_o and_o who_o as_o it_o be_v rom._n 9.15_o show_v mercy_n on_o who_o he_o will_v and_o who_o he_o will_v he_o harden_v and_o here_o we_o must_v be_v silent_a and_o learned_a scholar_n but_o it_o be_v this_o and_o that_o poor_a mean_a man_n the_o weaver_n the_o shoemaker_n the_o simple_a ploughman_n etc._n etc._n who_o most_o ordinary_o he_o call_v when_o he_o and_o this_o be_v sum_v up_o in_o these_o word_n he_o shall_v see_v of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v upon_o which_o two_o stand_v the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o all_o thing_n relate_v to_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_n be_v to_o sick_a and_o fiâ—m_n that_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n of_o the_o misgive_n or_o fail_v shall_v most_o certain_o bring_v forth_o in_o h_n be_v travel_v the_o 2._o promise_n be_v that_o he_o shall_v see_v the_o fruit_n of_o his_o soul-travel_n or_o his_o seed_n it_o be_v much_o to_o have_v a_o seed_n but_o it_o be_v more_o to_o see_v it_o it_o be_v not_o only_o this_o that_o christ_n shall_v have_v a_o numerous_a issue_n but_o that_o he_o shall_v outlive_a death_n to_o see_v and_o oversee_v and_o be_v a_o a_o tuâ—or_n to_o they_o though_o by_o his_o death_n he_o purchase_v life_n to_o they_o we_o shall_v from_o the_o first_o promise_n take_v two_o observation_n the_o 1._o be_v this_o that_o our_o lord_n jâ—sus_n by_o his_o suffer_v and_o soul_n travel_n shall_v certain_o attain_v the_o fruit_n he_o aim_v at_o in_o it_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n shall_v not_o be_v suffering_n be_v certain_o make_v effectual_a this_o be_v the_o father_n promise_n to_o he_o he_o shall_v see_v his_o seed_n or_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o shall_v be_v satisfy_v it_o can_v be_v frustrate_v and_o we_o may_v further_a confirm_v it_o from_o these_o ground_n 1_o because_o it_o be_v a_o covenant_v and_o transacted_a business_n betwixt_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o be_v here_o promise_v if_o therefore_o there_o can_v be_v a_o failling_a of_o the_o transaction_n and_o bargain_n it_o must_v certain_o have_v the_o full_a effect_n 2_o because_o the_o fail_v 2._o that_o christ_n suffering_n be_v not_o intend_v as_o a_o price_n and_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o all_o and_o every_o one_o for_o so_o he_o shall_v not_o see_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n but_o shall_v in_o a_o great_a part_n miss_v and_o loss_n it_o if_o he_o have_v intend_v that_o the_o travel_n of_o his_o soul_n shall_v have_v be_v undergo_v for_o judas_n as_o well_o as_o for_o peter_n 3._o there_o be_v here_o a_o ground_n for_o the_o certainty_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o convert_v elect_a sinner_n for_o christ_n
