spirit_n than_o a_o body_n the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n than_o sensual_a pleasure_n the_o eternal_a generation_n of_o the_o son_n than_o the_o ordinary_a procreation_n of_o man_n the_o operation_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n than_o the_o nourishment_n of_o our_o body_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v as_o yet_o no_o proportion_n between_o these_o object_n and_o our_o faculty_n of_o knowledge_n our_o intellectual_a power_n be_v not_o yet_o form_v and_o so_o adapt_v for_o they_o as_o they_o be_v for_o those_o thing_n in_o nature_n which_o be_v the_o proper_a object_n of_o our_o sense_n and_o reason_n now_o so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o more_o improper_a way_n of_o speak_v to_o say_v that_o these_o thing_n shall_v be_v clear_o reveal_v to_o we_o now_o as_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o than_o to_o say_v that_o a_o nice_a point_n in_o divinity_n or_o philosophy_n shall_v be_v clear_o explain_v to_o a_o infant_n they_o be_v indeed_o plain_o reveal_v to_o we_o as_o to_o their_o reality_n and_o existence_n but_o not_o clear_o as_o to_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n nothing_o in_o the_o world_n be_v more_o evident_a than_o that_o such_o thing_n be_v reveal_v to_o we_o but_o what_o or_o how_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o be_v impossible_a for_o we_o to_o comprehend_v and_o this_o be_v what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o that_o say_n that_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v enter_v 9_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n the_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v lay_v up_o for_o they_o that_o love_v he_o which_o word_n tho'_o by_o the_o context_n they_o be_v more_o immediate_o speak_v of_o thing_n past_a and_o then_o reveal_v in_o part_n yet_o they_o have_v a_o far_a reference_n to_o the_o full_a completion_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n in_o another_o world_n i_o shall_v make_v this_o whole_a matter_n plain_a by_o a_o instance_n a_o person_n who_o be_v bear_v blind_a know_v as_o little_a of_o the_o sun_n as_o he_o do_v of_o the_o real_a nature_n of_o god_n he_o feel_v the_o heat_n and_o warmth_n of_o it_o he_o be_v cherish_v by_o it_o and_o life_n and_o thrive_v by_o the_o secret_a influence_n of_o it_o but_o he_o neither_o know_v where_o nor_o what_o it_o be_v and_o if_o he_o have_v be_v ever_o tell_v that_o all_o this_o be_v the_o immediate_a act_n of_o god_n he_o will_v have_v think_v so_o for_o he_o know_v nothing_o of_o the_o sun_n beside_o the_o name_n now_o upon_o this_o author_n principle_n the_o nature_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n be_v both_o equal_o a_o mystery_n to_o this_o blind_a man._n that_o he_o be_v equal_o ignorant_a of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o both_o i_o grant_v however_o they_o be_v not_o equal_o a_o mystery_n to_o he_o and_o that_o this_o may_v appear_v let_v we_o suppose_v this_o man_n eye_n be_v open_v then_o he_o will_v see_v clear_o that_o the_o sun_n be_v a_o large_a round_o lucid_a body_n in_o the_o firmament_n but_o he_o will_v be_v hereby_o enable_v to_o know_v nothing_o more_o of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o god_n than_o he_o do_v before_o and_o why_o because_o this_o be_v beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o all_o his_o natural_a power_n of_o knowledge_n and_o if_o all_o his_o sense_n be_v improve_v to_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n niceâ—_n than_o they_o be_v tho'_o he_o will_v see_v much_o deep_a into_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o thing_n here_o yet_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n relate_v to_o another_o life_n will_v lie_v as_o much_o out_o of_o his_o reach_n as_o ever_o he_o will_v even_o then_o know_v as_o little_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n as_o that_o man_n do_v of_o the_o sun_n before_o his_o eye_n be_v open_v for_o light_n itself_o be_v but_o a_o metaphor_n adapt_v to_o our_o gross_a capacity_n to_o signify_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n which_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o the_o revelation_n be_v to_o be_v instead_o of_o light_n in_o heaven_n but_o because_o this_o be_v a_o instance_n only_o of_o a_o sensible_a object_n let_v we_o take_v another_o of_o reason_n let_v we_o suppose_v a_o illiterate_a person_n who_o never_o hear_v of_o christianity_n or_o the_o mathematics_n be_v equal_o ignorant_a of_o these_o two_o proposition_n the_o three_o angle_n of_o a_o triangle_n be_v equal_a to_o two_o right_a one_o and_o this_o we_o shall_v be_v raise_v in_o the_o likeness_n of_o christ._n these_o two_o proposition_n this_o derinder_n of_o all_o reveal_v truth_n will_v say_v be_v alike_o mysterious_a to_o this_o man._n whereas_o the_o contrary_a will_v evident_o appear_v if_o we_o but_o take_v this_o man_n and_o teach_v he_o mathematics_n than_o he_o shall_v perfect_o apprehend_v all_o that_o be_v to_o be_v know_v of_o that_o demonstration_n and_o how_o it_o be_v impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v otherwise_o but_o teach_v he_o the_o gospel_n and_o make_v he_o as_o learned_a as_o he_o be_v capable_a in_o the_o christian_a religion_n he_o shall_v know_v nothing_o more_o of_o that_o proposition_n tho'_o he_o shall_v be_v better_o convince_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o than_o he_o do_v at_o first_o hear_v and_o why_o because_o the_o one_o be_v a_o truth_n in_o nature_n within_o the_o sphere_n of_o his_o intellectual_a power_n the_o other_o be_v supernatural_a and_o he_o can_v never_o have_v any_o notion_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o till_o he_o have_v new_a faculty_n or_o those_o he_o already_o have_v be_v great_o enlarge_v but_o this_o matter_n will_v clear_v up_o far_o if_o we_o compare_v some_o of_o the_o mystery_n of_o our_o religion_n with_o those_o thing_n in_o nature_n which_o bear_v the_o great_a analogy_n with_o they_o and_o by_o which_o they_o be_v represent_v to_o we_o in_o the_o scripture_n if_o we_o say_v a_o son_n be_v like_o his_o father_n we_o immediate_o conceive_v in_o our_o mind_n the_o same_o stature_n countenance_n lineament_n and_o complexion_n or_o the_o same_o humour_n disposition_n natural_a part_n and_o inclination_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o we_o very_o well_o apprehend_v wherein_o the_o likeness_n consist_v but_o when_o we_o say_v we_o shall_v rise_v in_o the_o likeness_n of_o christ_n here_o we_o stop_v and_o our_o thought_n can_v reach_v no_o far_o again_o when_o we_o say_v one_o man_n be_v the_o son_n of_o another_o we_o apprehend_v very_o well_o the_o manner_n of_o natural_a procreation_n and_o how_o it_o be_v he_o come_v to_o be_v his_o father_n but_o when_o we_o say_v christ_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o a_o eternal_a generation_n we_o know_v nothing_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o one_o spirit_n produce_v another_o nor_o can_v we_o tell_v how_o he_o come_v to_o be_v bear_v of_o a_o virgin_n without_o the_o concurrence_n of_o a_o man._n when_o we_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v a_o real_a influence_n upon_o we_o in_o the_o operation_n of_o grace_n we_o know_v much_o less_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o than_o we_o do_v of_o one_o body_n move_v another_o by_o contact_n and_o we_o know_v the_o food_n we_o eat_v nourish_v we_o by_o undergo_a several_a alteration_n and_o then_o be_v convert_v into_o the_o substance_n of_o our_o body_n but_o we_o can_v know_v thus_o much_o of_o the_o manner_n how_o grace_n administer_v strength_n and_o comfort_n to_o our_o soul_n again_o we_o know_v of_o time_n that_o it_o be_v finite_a and_o successive_a and_o we_o can_v measure_v it_o in_o certain_a proportion_n by_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o heavenly_a body_n but_o as_o for_o eternity_n for_o want_v of_o a_o clear_a idea_n we_o frame_v a_o notion_n of_o it_o from_o time_n and_o thus_o by_o a_o limit_a thought_n we_o do_v little_o less_o then_o destroy_v its_o be_v for_o as_o for_o say_v it_o be_v a_o perpetual_a now_o tho'_o it_o be_v the_o pretty_a thought_n we_o have_v of_o it_o yet_o if_o we_o attend_v to_o this_o we_o shall_v find_v we_o say_v nothing_o more_o than_o that_o the_o same_o instant_a shall_v remain_v for_o ever_o and_o thus_o attribute_v that_o succession_n to_o one_o instant_a of_o time_n abstract_o consider_v which_o we_o use_v to_o attribute_v to_o thing_n which_o exist_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v as_o gross_a a_o description_n of_o of_o prescience_n as_o it_o be_v in_o god_n who_o see_v they_o actual_o and_o ex_fw-la parte_fw-la rei_fw-la nor_o can_v we_o conceive_v how_o this_o prescience_n of_o he_o be_v reconcileable_a with_o the_o contingency_n of_o thing_n tho'_o we_o be_v sure_a it_o be_v so_o from_o those_o prophecy_n of_o very_a minute_n circumstance_n many_o hundred_o of_o year_n before_o they_o come_v to_o pass_v i_o may_v thus_o run_v through_o all_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n and_o show_v in_o every_o one_o of_o they_o how_o we_o make_v to_o ourselves_o some_o representation_n of_o they_o by_o compound_v and_o enlarge_n those_o idea_n we_o have_v either_o of_o sensible_a object_n or_o of_o the_o operation_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n and_o thus_o we_o represent_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n and_o justice_n and_o holiness_n and_o mercy_n etc._n etc._n of_o god_n from_o the_o scanty_a notion_n we_o have_v of_o these_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o tho'_o they_o exhibit_v to_o we_o no_o more_o of_o the_o real_a nature_n of_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v in_o god_n than_o continue_a extension_n do_v of_o his_o omnipresence_n or_o a_o great_a number_n do_v of_o his_o infinity_o or_o many_o age_n of_o his_o eternity_n so_o that_o in_o all_o our_o thought_n of_o that_o divine_a be_v we_o do_v proceed_v thus_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n be_v such_o therefore_o these_o thing_n follow_v but_o these_o thing_n be_v the_o great_a perfection_n we_o be_v able_a to_o conceive_v and_o therefore_o by_o help_n of_o these_o we_o form_n the_o best_a and_o most_o honourable_a idea_n of_o god_n that_o be_v possible_a for_o we_o in_o this_o condition_n of_o infirmity_n and_o blindness_n that_o we_o be_v now_o in_o not_o but_o that_o after_o we_o have_v frame_v the_o big_a idea_n of_o god_n our_o mind_n be_v capable_a of_o by_o the_o great_a enlargement_n of_o these_o perfection_n after_o all_o it_o be_v as_o gross_a a_o representation_n of_o he_o as_o darkness_n be_v of_o light_n and_o express_v nothing_o of_o the_o real_a nature_n of_o that_o incomprehensible_a be_v to_o we_o nor_o do_v they_o give_v we_o the_o least_o glimpse_n of_o he_o as_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o 2._o but_o two_o as_o we_o can_v have_v no_o such_o proper_a and_o immediate_a idea_n of_o god_n himself_o so_o neither_o have_v we_o such_o idea_n of_o any_o thing_n relate_v to_o another_o world_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o glory_n of_o heaven_n be_v reveal_v to_o we_o under_o the_o notion_n of_o light_n the_o greatness_n and_o splendour_n of_o that_o place_n by_o that_o of_o a_o kingdom_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n by_o sensual_a pleasure_n such_o as_o eat_v and_o drink_v the_o operation_n of_o grace_n by_o the_o nourishment_n of_o our_o body_n etc._n etc._n and_o when_o god_n himself_o be_v speak_v of_o it_o be_v always_o by_o analogy_n with_o the_o member_n of_o a_o human_a body_n and_o the_o operation_n of_o our_o mind_n thus_o he_o be_v mention_v as_o have_v hand_n and_o foot_n as_o see_v and_o hear_v and_o as_o be_v affect_v with_o all_o the_o passion_n of_o a_o human_a soul_n because_o he_o have_v no_o other_o way_n to_o speak_v of_o himself_o to_o we_o now_o since_o we_o have_v neither_o word_n nor_o idea_n to_o think_v or_o speak_v of_o he_o after_o any_o other_o manner_n or_o indeed_o of_o any_o other_o object_n of_o another_o world_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o all_o his_o revelation_n have_v make_v use_n not_o only_o of_o the_o word_n and_o phrase_n common_o receive_v and_o understand_v but_o likewise_o of_o those_o common_a notion_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n of_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n to_o represent_v truth_n which_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o we_o now_o unconceivable_a and_o for_o which_o there_o be_v as_o yet_o no_o capacity_n in_o our_o nature_n so_o that_o in_o truth_n all_o the_o idea_n we_o at_o present_a have_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o another_o world_n be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o sort_n of_o type_n and_o figure_n of_o thing_n the_o real_a nature_n of_o which_o be_v total_o obscure_v from_o we_o and_o this_o be_v the_o literal_a meaning_n of_o 12._o those_o word_n of_o st._n paul_n that_o now_o we_o see_v through_o a_o glass_n dark_o i._n e._n by_o analogy_n only_o with_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n but_o then_o face_n to_o face_n i._n e._n we_o shall_v have_v as_o immediate_a a_o view_n of_o those_o heavenly_a object_n as_o we_o have_v now_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o only_o represent_v they_o to_o we_o so_o that_o when_o we_o be_v say_v to_o have_v these_o divine_a truth_n reveal_v to_o we_o in_o part_n the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o any_o real_a part_n of_o the_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o be_v exhibit_v to_o our_o view_n and_o the_o rest_n obscure_v or_o that_o we_o have_v any_o indistinct_a view_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o as_o we_o see_v a_o object_n at_o a_o great_a distance_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v that_o the_o whole_a be_v reveal_v to_o we_o under_o the_o resemblance_n of_o some_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n whereof_o we_o have_v clear_a and_o distinct_a idea_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o tho'_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o have_v idea_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a thing_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o immediate_a or_o proper_a one_o but_o a_o sort_n of_o composition_n we_o make_v up_o from_o our_o idea_n of_o worldly_a object_n which_o at_o the_o utmost_a amount_n to_o no_o more_o than_o a_o type_n or_o figure_n by_o which_o something_o in_o another_o world_n be_v signify_v of_o which_o we_o have_v no_o more_o notion_n than_o a_o blindman_n have_v of_o light_n and_o now_o that_o i_o be_o fall_v into_o this_o metaphor_n which_o seem_v well_o to_o explain_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n let_v we_o pursue_v it_o a_o little_a and_o suppose_v that_o to_o a_o man_n who_o have_v never_o see_v or_o hear_v any_o thing_n of_o it_o it_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o light_n this_o man_n as_o yet_o have_v neither_o a_o name_n nor_o a_o notion_n for_o it_o nor_o any_o capacity_n of_o conceive_v what_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o it_o be_v plain_a therefore_o god_n will_v not_o reveal_v this_o to_o he_o by_o the_o name_n of_o light_n a_o word_n whole_o unknown_a to_o he_o nor_o by_o stamp_v on_o his_o mind_n any_o immediate_a idea_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o than_o it_o be_v utter_o impossible_a for_o he_o to_o communicate_v this_o revelation_n to_o other_o as_o blind_a as_o himself_o for_o nothing_o but_o the_o same_o almighty_a impression_n can_v do_v that_o so_o that_o this_o revelation_n must_v be_v make_v by_o word_n and_o notion_n which_o be_v already_o in_o he_o and_o according_o when_o he_o be_v tell_v that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o can_v diffuse_v itself_o in_o a_o instant_n many_o thousand_o of_o mile_n round_o and_o enable_v he_o to_o know_v in_o a_o moment_n what_o order_n all_o thing_n lay_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o he_o and_o what_o proportion_n they_o bear_v one_o to_o another_o nay_o that_o it_o can_v make_v he_o know_v where_o the_o heaven_n lay_v and_o by_o the_o help_n of_o this_o he_o shall_v there_o discern_v at_o once_o a_o vast_a and_o almost_o infinite_a number_n of_o very_o pleasant_a body_n and_o in_o short_a that_o without_o the_o help_n of_o his_o stick_n or_o his_o hand_n he_o shall_v know_v every_o thing_n that_o lie_v before_o he_o after_o all_o it_o be_v plain_a this_o man_n will_v form_v to_o himself_o a_o idea_n of_o light_n from_o his_o touch_n he_o will_v think_v it_o very_o like_a feeling_n and_o perhaps_o call_v it_o by_o that_o name_n because_o this_o be_v the_o best_a way_n he_o have_v of_o distinguish_v one_o thing_n from_o another_o and_o therefore_o will_v conclude_v that_o those_o body_n he_o hear_v of_o must_v needs_o be_v wondrous_a soft_a and_o smooth_a just_o thus_o do_v we_o conceive_v the_o thing_n of_o another_o world_n so_o that_o we_o may_v rack_v our_o invention_n and_o turn_v and_o wind_v all_o those_o idea_n we_o have_v into_o ten_o thousand_o different_a shape_n and_o yet_o never_o make_v up_o any_o likeness_n or_o similitude_n of_o the_o real_a nature_n of_o those_o object_n of_o another_o world_n and_o now_o i_o hope_v he_o will_v grant_v it_o a_o thing_n possible_a for_o god_n to_o make_v such_o a_o revelation_n as_o this_o to_o a_o blind_a man_n and_o yet_o by_o this_o concession_n he_o destroy_v his_o whole_a book_n for_o upon_o his_o principle_n it_o be_v a_o thing_n utter_o impossible_a for_o any_o man_n that_o be_v bear_v blind_a to_o believe_v there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o light_n upon_o the_o testimony_n either_o of_o god_n or_o man_n
say_v to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o another_o because_o it_o be_v reveal_v to_o we_o that_o there_o be_v endless_a joy_n in_o heaven_n it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o know_v as_o much_o of_o they_o the_o rest_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o those_o seem_o opposite_a expression_n of_o st._n paul_n the_o one_o in_o 2_o cor._n 3._o 18._o where_n speak_v of_o the_o clearness_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o obscurity_n of_o the_o law_n he_o say_v we_o all_o with_o open_a face_n behold_v as_o in_o a_o glass_n the_o glory_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o yet_o in_o 1._o cor._n 13_o 12._o speak_v of_o this_o same_o present_a state_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o opposition_n to_o our_o future_a state_n in_o heaven_n he_o say_v that_o now_o we_o see_v through_o a_o glass_n dark_o but_o then_o face_n to_o face_n by_o the_o first_o he_o denote_v the_o clearness_n of_o the_o revelation_n as_o to_o the_o existence_n and_o design_n of_o those_o thing_n now_o under_o the_o gospel_n by_o the_o latter_a he_o denote_v the_o present_a obscurity_n of_o they_o as_o to_o their_o manner_n and_o property_n but_o it_o may_v be_v object_v here_o that_o thus_o they_o be_v but_o
