providence_n so_o of_o his_o graciousness_n in_o his_o promise_n there_o be_v a_o grieve_v of_o his_o good_a spirit_n a_o question_n of_o his_o government_n as_o if_o he_o do_v not_o dispose_v of_o thing_n as_o he_o shall_v when_o we_o will_v have_v it_o one_o way_n and_o god_n will_v have_v it_o another_o way_n there_o be_v likewise_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pride_n in_o dejection_n and_o discontent_n the_o most_o discontent_a spirit_n in_o the_o world_n be_v the_o devil_n and_o none_o proud_a it_o argue_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pride_n and_o sullenness_n to_o be_v affect_o sad_a and_o deject_a as_o if_o such_o worthy_a and_o excellent_a person_n as_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o afflict_v or_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n for_o we_o to_o be_v deject_a than_o raise_v up_o whereas_o if_o we_o balance_v our_o ground_n of_o comfort_n be_v christian_n as_o we_o shall_v do_v they_o will_v appear_v incomparable_o above_o the_o ground_n of_o our_o discouragement_n so_o it_o be_v a_o wrong_n to_o god_n and_o his_o truth_n and_o his_o gracious_a sweet_a government_n to_o yield_v to_o a_o deject_a sullen_a disposition_n it_o be_v likewise_o a_o wrong_n to_o other_o for_o it_o make_v we_o unfit_a for_o any_o office_n of_o love_n to_o they_o when_o we_o plod_v and_o pore_v so_o much_o upon_o our_o discontentment_n and_o drink_v up_o our_o spirit_n and_o eat_v up_o our_o heart_n it_o disable_v the_o soul_n take_v away_o not_o only_o the_o strength_n but_o also_o the_o willingness_n of_o the_o soul_n beside_o the_o scandal_n that_o it_o bring_v on_o religion_n and_o the_o best_a way_n as_o if_o there_o be_v not_o enough_o in_o religion_n to_o comfort_v the_o soul_n but_o you_o will_v say_v religion_n breed_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n and_o pensivenesse_n it_o be_v indeed_o the_o speech_n of_o the_o shallow_a people_n of_o the_o world_n religion_n make_v man_n sad_a and_o it_o be_v true_a that_o as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n here_o have_v make_v his_o disciple_n sad_a by_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o will_v leave_v he_o and_o that_o a_o great_a scandal_n will_v be_v take_v at_o his_o cross_n and_o shameful_a suffering_n but_o yet_o withal_o bid_v they_o not_o be_v trouble_v and_o give_v you_o ground_n of_o comfort_n so_o religion_n will_v make_v man_n sad_a for_o it_o discover_v truth_n and_o sad_a truth_n i_o but_o the_o same_o religion_n will_v cheer_v they_o up_o again_o yea_o it_o cast_v they_o down_o that_o it_o may_v raise_v they_o up_o the_o usnne_n in_o the_o morning_n raise_v cloud_n but_o when_o it_o have_v strength_n it_o scatter_v they_o god_n intend_v solid_a and_o substantial_a comfort_n do_v first_o beget_v trouble_n and_o discover_v true_a ground_n of_o trouble_n he_o let_v we_o see_v that_o all_o be_v not_o well_o but_o still_o as_o religion_n bring_v any_o trouble_n so_o it_o bring_v with_o it_o great_a remedy_n against_o these_o trouble_n and_o that_o god_n that_o raise_v a_o soul_n to_o see_v just_a matter_n of_o grief_n will_v by_o his_o spirit_n show_v its_o due_a and_o right_a portion_n in_o comfort_n thus_o to_o be_v sorrowful_a and_o sad_a in_o some_o measure_n be_v from_o religion_n but_o that_o which_o will_v prevent_v the_o excess_n and_o over_o measure_n of_o it_o be_v from_o religion_n likewise_o so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o scandal_n to_o religion_n to_o be_v over_o much_o deject_v beside_o though_o we_o shall_v be_v trouble_v for_o sin_n yet_o to_o be_v over_o much_o trouble_v for_o sin_n be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o it_o be_v as_o if_o we_o have_v not_o in_o he_o a_o sufficient_a remedy_n for_o that_o great_a malady_n as_o be_v it_o grief_n for_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o church_n as_o not_o to_o be_v trouble_v at_o the_o affliction_n of_o joseph_n be_v brand_v for_o a_o sin_n so_o to_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o as_o if_o christ_n have_v cast_v off_o the_o government_n from_o his_o shoulder_n or_o have_v not_o the_o name_n of_o the_o church_n on_o his_o breast_n in_o heaven_n as_o the_o high_a priest_n have_v the_o name_n of_o the_o 12_o tribe_n in_o his_o breast_n plate_n to_o be_v so_o cast_v down_o as_o to_o be_v take_v off_o from_o prayer_n and_o from_o the_o use_n of_o all_o good_a mean_n to_o help_v the_o church_n this_o be_v sinful_a so_o also_o when_o grief_n for_o sin_n make_v we_o forget_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o forget_v the_o heal_a virtue_n of_o he_o our_o brazen_a serpent_n to_o neglect_v to_o search_v our_o ground_n of_o comfort_n and_o to_o yield_v to_o satan_n to_o temptation_n even_o over_o much_o sadness_n though_o it_o be_v for_o sin_n or_o for_o the_o church_n it_o be_v hurtful_a and_o scandalous_a josuah_n be_v much_o cast_v down_o when_o he_o see_v it_o go_v not_o well_o with_o israel_n but_o get_v thou_o up_o josuah_n say_v god_n what_o do_v thou_o lie_v here_o up_o and_o do_v thy_o duty_n consider_v what_o be_v amiss_o there_o be_v a_o achan_n in_o the_o camp_n and_o so_o when_o thing_n go_v not_o well_o let_v not_o your_o thought_n be_v conversant_a about_o the_o matter_n of_o trouble_n so_o much_o as_o about_o your_o duty_n so_o we_o see_v it_o be_v incident_a to_o god_n people_n to_o be_v over_o much_o trouble_v and_o we_o see_v also_o the_o reason_n why_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o because_o it_o be_v injurious_a to_o god_n to_o ourselves_o and_o other_o every_o way_n and_o after_o all_o this_o there_o be_v much_o reason_n in_o this_o that_o christ_n have_v forbid_v it_o let_v not_o your_o heart_n be_v trouble_v but_o christ_n can_v as_o well_o have_v cure_v it_o be_v god_n ob._n as_o easy_o as_o forbid_v it_o it_o be_v true_a but_o he_o cure_v it_o by_o forbid_v it_o ans._n with_o the_o word_n there_o go_v forth_o a_o spirit_n of_o comfort_n into_o their_o heart_n a_o influence_n of_o grace_n accompanied_z his_o command_n for_o the_o word_n and_o spirit_n god_n together_o christ_n deal_v with_o man_n by_o man_n the_o spirit_n of_o comfort_n be_v a_o spirit_n of_o truth_n and_o therefore_o god_n comfort_v by_o truth_n he_o give_v we_o sanctify_a understanding_n and_o affection_n and_o then_o work_v on_o they_o by_o sanctify_a truth_n and_o sometime_o christ_n cure_v it_o by_o real_a comfort_n for_o comfort_n be_v either_o rational_a which_o be_v fetch_v from_o ground_n which_o the_o love_n of_o god_n convey_v how_o many_o real_a comfort_n do_v god_n bestow_v when_o he_o fit_v we_o with_o conveniency_n in_o our_o way_n to_o heaven_n so_o that_o we_o may_v teade_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o they_o god_n do_v not_o only_o comfort_v we_o by_o his_o gracious_a promise_n by_o his_o word_n and_o sacrament_n administer_a heavenly_a comfort_n by_o they_o but_o also_o by_o the_o convey_n of_o himself_o and_o his_o love_n by_o outward_a comfort_n that_o we_o enjoy_v in_o the_o world_n howsoever_o carnal_a man_n abuse_v they_o make_v all_o thing_n to_o work_v for_o the_o worst_a yet_o that_o love_n that_o intend_v heaven_n sweeten_v all_o thing_n in_o the_o passage_n to_o heaven_n to_o his_o child_n because_o they_o see_v the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o the_o least_o comfort_n again_o observe_v from_o this_o here_o let_v not_o your_o heart_n be_v trouble_v what_o be_v the_o seat_n of_o comfort_n the_o heart_n the_o seat_n of_o comfort_n be_v the_o fear_n of_o grief_n there_o must_v be_v a_o application_n of_o comfort_n suitable_a to_o the_o grief_n and_o the_o heart_n must_v be_v comfort_v and_o therefore_o in_o isa._n 40._o 1_o 2._o comfort_v you_o comfort_v you_o my_o people_n speak_v to_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o grief_n sink_v and_o soak_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o heart_n so_o do_v christ_n comfort_n like_o true_a cordial_n indeed_o that_o go_v as_o deep_a as_o the_o grievance_n if_o the_o grief_n go_v to_o the_o heart_n the_o comfort_n must_v go_v as_o deep_o now_o god_n the_o father_n of_o spirit_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o comforter_n know_v and_o search_v our_o spirit_n they_o know_v all_o the_o corner_n of_o the_o heart_n they_o can_v banish_v fear_n and_o sorrow_n out_o of_o
when_o it_o be_v purge_v and_o pacify_v then_o keep_v it_o clean_o for_o a_o foul_a soul_n be_v always_o a_o trouble_a soul_n and_o though_o it_o may_v be_v quiet_a yet_o it_o be_v sure_a to_o break_v out_o afterward_o and_o because_o there_o can_v be_v no_o more_o comfort_n than_o there_o be_v care_n of_o duty_n therefore_o together_o with_o innocence_n let_v we_o be_v careful_a of_o all_o duty_n in_o all_o our_o several_a relation_n let_v we_o consider_v in_o what_o relation_n we_o stand_v and_o what_o duty_n we_o owe_v and_o be_v careful_a to_o satisfy_v they_o all_o neglect_v of_o duty_n be_v a_o debt_n and_o debt_n be_v troublesome_a when_o the_o soul_n reflect_v upon_o the_o omission_n of_o a_o necessary_a duty_n i_o owe_v such_o a_o duty_n to_o such_o a_o person_n i_o shall_v have_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n in_o such_o a_o relation_n but_o i_o have_v omit_v it_o it_o be_v a_o disquietment_n and_o that_o upon_o good_a ground_n and_o if_o you_o have_v be_v negligent_a there_o must_v be_v a_o actual_a renew_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o a_o set_n upon_o the_o duty_n with_o fresh_a endeavour_n to_o make_v amends_o for_o former_a negligence_n or_o else_o the_o soul_n shall_v have_v no_o comfort_n nor_o will_v god_n suffer_v it_o to_o admit_v of_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o work_v out_o your_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n do_v still_o tremble_v and_o be_v trouble_v with_o this_o doubt_n and_o that_o fear_v be_v because_o their_o salvation_n be_v not_o wrought_v out_o something_o be_v leave_v undo_v and_o their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o so_o but_o above_o all_o that_o we_o may_v receive_v comfort_n let_v we_o labour_v for_o a_o spirit_n of_o faith_n therefore_o here_o it_o be_v say_v you_o believe_v in_o god_n believe_v also_o in_o i_o christ_n bring_v they_o to_o faith_n for_o comfort_n and_o he_o set_v down_o a_o a_o double_a object_n of_o faith_n god_n that_o be_v the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o christ_n consider_v as_o mediator_n and_o christ_n bring_v they_o to_o himself_o believe_v also_o in_o i_o because_o he_o will_v fence_v they_o against_o the_o future_a scandal_n of_o his_o suffering_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v you_o will_v hereafter_o when_o you_o see_v i_o so_o handle_v and_o upon_o the_o cross_n doubt_v and_o call_v in_o question_n whether_o i_o be_o god_n and_o the_o messiah_n of_o the_o world_n or_o no._n but_o if_o you_o believe_v in_o god_n believe_v in_o i_o for_o howsoever_o in_o love_n to_o you_o and_o mankind_n i_o take_v man_n nature_n on_o i_o and_o be_o abase_v yet_o in_o my_o great_a abasement_n remember_v this_o that_o i_o be_o god_n and_o sure_o there_o be_v nothing_o can_v stay_v the_o soul_n more_o especial_o when_o it_o be_v deep_o humble_v then_o to_o consider_v god_n in_o the_o second_o person_n incarnate_a and_o abase_v and_o crucify_v and_o make_v a_o curse_n and_o sin_n for_o we_o to_o see_v the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n who_o excellency_n we_o can_v comprehend_v to_o take_v our_o nature_n and_o in_o our_o nature_n to_o suffer_v for_o we_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o do_v endure_v this_o will_v establish_v the_o soul_n indeed_o can_v the_o the_o soul_n think_v that_o this_o be_v do_v for_o any_o small_a or_o to_o little_a purpose_n or_o can_v there_o be_v any_o grief_n or_o sin_n that_o shall_v hinder_v comfort_n or_o persuasion_n of_o the_o possibility_n of_o pardon_n when_o the_o great_a god_n become_v man_n on_o purpose_n to_o die_v for_o sin_n we_o may_v set_v this_o against_o all_o discouragement_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o believe_v in_o god_n believe_v also_o in_o i_o howsoever_o you_o see_v i_o abase_v yet_o you_o may_v have_v comfort_n in_o my_o abasement_n for_o it_o be_v for_o you_o and_o therefore_o say_v paul_n irejoyce_v to_o know_v nothing_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v that_o which_o proud_a and_o atheistical_a heathen_n take_v scandal_n the_o soul_n and_o above_o the_o devil_n and_o therefore_o for_o our_o salvation_n and_o to_o give_v we_o comfort_n there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o three_o person_n in_o the_o godhead_n the_o father_n be_v offend_v god_n in_o the_o second_o person_n must_v satisfy_v offend_v justice_n and_o god_n in_o the_o three_o person_n must_v reveal_v and_o apply_v the_o son_n for_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o he_o name_v they_o distinct_o you_o believe_v in_o god_n etc._n etc._n and_o because_o we_o can_v believe_v in_o god_n the_o father_n but_o by_o believe_v in_o christ_n therefore_o he_o join_v they_o together_o you_o believe_v in_o god_n you_o believe_v also_o in_o i_o no_o man_n come_v to_o the_o father_n but_o by_o the_o son_n god_n the_o father_n dwell_v in_o the_o light_n that_o no_o mortal_a eye_n can_v approach_v unto_o only_o he_o have_v manifest_v himself_o in_o his_o son_n who_o be_v the_o engrave_v image_n of_o his_o person_n god_n shine_v in_o the_o face_n of_o a_o consume_a fire_n therefore_o think_v of_o god_n as_o we_o in_o christ_n carry_v christ_n our_o elder_a brother_n with_o we_o and_o desire_v god_n to_o look_v upon_o we_o in_o his_o son_n now_o now_o do_v faith_n in_o christ_n ease_v the_o soul_n in_o trouble_n quest._n many_o way_n answ._n i_o will_v name_v a_o few_o faith_n in_o christ_n banish_v trouble_n and_o bring_v in_o comfort_n because_o it_o be_v a_o empty_v grace_n it_o empty_v we_o of_o ourselves_o and_o so_o make_v we_o clean_o to_o another_o and_o thereby_o become_v a_o grace_n of_o union_n it_o be_v such_o a_o grace_n as_o bring_v the_o soul_n and_o christ_n together_o now_o christ_n be_v the_o fountain_n of_o comfort_n god_n have_v treasure_v all_o comfort_n in_o he_o for_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n dwell_v in_o christ_n and_o faith_n cause_v christ_n to_o dwell_v in_o we_o bring_v the_o soul_n and_o christ_n together_o and_o so_o must_v needs_o make_v way_n for_o comfort_n for_o it_o make_v we_o one_o with_o the_o fountain_n of_o comfort_n and_o by_o it_o repeat_v act_n derive_v fresh_a comfort_n again_o faith_n establish_v the_o heart_n now_o to_o establish_v the_o soul_n there_o must_v be_v a_o solid_a basis_n as_o in_o build_v there_o must_v be_v a_o foundation_n and_o a_o plant_n upon_o that_o foundation_n now_o here_o be_v a_o foundation_n god_n and_o christ_n and_o there_o must_v be_v a_o grace_n to_o found_v and_o bottom_n the_o soul_n thereupon_o and_o that_o be_v faith_n and_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v establish_v the_o chain_n and_o connexion_n of_o cause_n herein_o be_v this_o god_n the_o father_n in_o christ_n and_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n convey_v comfort_n through_o the_o word_n lay_v hold_v upon_o by_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o the_o word_n alone_o for_o that_o be_v but_o as_o the_o vein_n and_o attery_n that_o convey_v the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n so_o the_o spirit_n be_v convey_v by_o the_o promise_n help_v the_o soul_n to_o lay_v itself_o upon_o christ_n malicious_a person_n against_o all_o that_o be_v true_o good_a what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v with_o peace_n now_o in_o the_o visible_a church_n there_o be_v another_o sort_n that_o satan_n labour_v to_o trouble_v since_o he_o can_v keep_v they_o in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n but_o they_o break_v from_o he_o christ_n pull_v they_o out_o of_o satan_n kingdom_n by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o ordinance_n and_o holy_a spirit_n he_o labour_v to_o trouble_v they_o in_o their_o peace_n all_o he_o can_v because_o they_o be_v in_o the_o world_n above_o the_o world_n he_o enjoy_v their_o condition_n that_o they_o shall_v enjoy_v that_o paradise_n which_o he_o leave_v the_o comfort_n that_o he_o once_o have_v and_o therefore_o he_o labour_v to_o disturb_v they_o in_o their_o comfort_n the_o estate_n of_o such_o be_v mix_v here_o in_o this_o world_n they_o have_v that_o in_o they_o and_o without_o they_o which_o will_v always_o be_v a_o cause_n and_o occasion_n of_o trouble_n they_o have_v corruption_n in_o they_o not_o altogether_o subdue_v and_o they_o have_v without_o they_o satan_n take_v advantage_n against_o they_o and_o the_o world_n oppose_v they_o these_o although_o it_o look_v upon_o itself_o and_o see_v nothing_o but_o turmoil_n and_o sedition_n there_o three_o when_o it_o look_v upon_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n and_o accident_n here_o below_o it_o be_v
