his_o obligation_n as_o a_o creature_n to_o serve_v his_o creator_n a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o sensible_a of_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o reward_n nor_o of_o the_o danger_n of_o hell_n yet_o i_o ready_a to_o give_v his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n under_o the_o first_o covenant_n but_o the_o covenant_n be_v not_o a_o free_a channel_n for_o conveyance_n of_o this_o precious_a water_n of_o life_n for_o the_o spirit_n run_v free_a in_o the_o clear_a promise_n &_o therefore_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v full_a of_o rich_a and_o plain_a promise_n be_v call_v the_o ministration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o call_v by_o the_o name_n of_o spirit_n whereas_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v a_o dead_a mere_a outside_n literal_a thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o it_o 2_o cor._n 3.6_o i_o say_v the_o fault_n be_v lay_v upon_o the_o covenant_n which_o yet_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n now_o what_o other_o fault_n it_o can_v be_v then_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o think_v it_o gracious_a enough_o i_o can_v imagine_v and_o i_o think_v that_o be_v the_o fault_n the_o scripture_n pitch_v upon_o now_o because_o moses_n dispensation_n or_o the_o first_o covenant_n make_v with_o objection_n that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o there_o describe_v but_o there_o commend_v to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n as_o a_o part_n at_o least_o if_o not_o the_o chief_a part_n of_o the_o dispensation_n by_o moses_n and_o it_o be_v give_v with_o as_o great_a authority_n and_o have_v as_o solemn_a a_o sanction_n upon_o it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n for_o in_o that_o place_n which_o the_o apostle_n paul_n quote_v out_o of_o moses_n viz._n leu._n 18.5_o for_o the_o description_n of_o a_o legal_a righteousness_n we_o have_v these_o word_n you_o shall_v somewhat_o more_o ask_v show_v above_o and_o indeed_o here_o be_v the_o proper_a place_n to_o show_v the_o necessity_n of_o some_o further_a principle_n and_o i_o according_o promise_v in_o that_o particular_a to_o show_v it_o in_o this_o now_o i_o suppose_v this_o be_v be_v the_o great_a reason_n why_o there_o be_v need_n of_o a_o further_a principle_n beside_o those_o three_o for_o that_o a_o man_n may_v act_v by_o all_o those_o three_o principle_n and_o yet_o be_v under_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n now_o there_o must_v be_v some_o principle_n to_o free_v the_o soul_n from_o this_o bondage_n or_o else_o the_o soul_n can_v never_o serve_v god_n acceptable_o this_o principle_n must_v be_v love_n perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n first_o all_o slavish_a fear_n of_o god_n than_o the_o fear_n of_o man_n he_o that_o fear_v be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n look_v to_o what_o degree_n the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o such_o degree_n be_v the_o slavish_a other_o occasion_n or_o reason_n then_o from_o their_o unreasonable_a conception_n their_o over-timorous_a and_o dreadful_a apprehension_n of_o god_n they_o have_v some_o secret_a fear_n and_o doubt_n of_o his_o goodness_n that_o he_o will_v never_o be_v please_v though_o they_o make_v their_o way_n never_o so_o perfect_a before_o he_o though_o they_o humble_v themselves_o though_o they_o acknowledge_v their_o vileness_n in_o never_o so_o great_a debasement_n and_o abhorrency_n of_o themselves_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v secret_o afraid_a and_o it_o must_v be_v so_o or_o else_o if_o they_o shall_v think_v so_o always_o they_o be_v perfect_a legallist_n or_o else_o if_o they_o do_v not_o think_v so_o high_a as_o this_o that_o they_o must_v keep_v the_o whole_a law_n yet_o they_o think_v at_o least_o that_o they_o must_v do_v some_o very_a great_a thing_n which_o be_v beyond_o their_o strength_n and_o so_o according_o for_o instance_n they_o think_v they_o must_v do_v so_o many_o duty_n in_o a_o day_n let_v what_o business_n come_v that_o can_v come_v and_o they_o must_v do_v it_o so_o well_o be_v they_o in_o never_o so_o ill_a a_o temper_n or_o frame_v of_o heart_n not_o as_o if_o our_o ill_a temper_n excuse_v the_o ill_a performance_n of_o a_o action_n where_o that_o distemper_n be_v bring_v upon_o we_o by_o ourselves_o and_o that_o they_o perhaps_o must_v do_v as_o much_o when_o they_o be_v sick_a as_o when_o they_o be_v well_o that_o though_o they_o be_v weak_a in_o grace_n or_o weak_a in_o part_n that_o yet_o they_o must_v do_v as_o much_o as_o those_o that_o be_v strong_a in_o both_o all_o this_o now_o together_o with_o the_o fear_n and_o trouble_n that_o attend_v these_o thought_n i_o call_v legality_n and_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o false_a and_o over-timorous_a apprehension_n of_o the_o deity_n and_o they_o be_v not_o enough_o sensible_a that_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n be_v alter_v from_o perfect_a to_o imperfect_a nor_o that_o the_o term_n betwixt_o the_o great_a god_n and_o his_o creature_n man_n be_v alter_v from_o legal_a to_o evangelical_n and_o i_o say_v once_o for_o all_o he_o that_o think_v god_n require_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o creature_n above_o its_o strength_n nay_o beyond_o what_o the_o creature_n can_v through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n well_o and_o comfortable_o perform_v be_v a_o legallist_n
