charitable_a construction_n of_o what_o be_v do_v by_o other_o yet_o none_o be_v ever_o more_o severe_a against_o himself_o or_o more_o curious_a to_o espy_v the_o least_o sinful_a defect_n or_o irregularity_n in_o himself_o when_o he_o perceive_v the_o ebullition_n of_o pride_n self-love_n covetousness_n infidelity_n when_o he_o see_v the_o least_o mixture_n of_o carnal_a and_o self-end_n in_o his_o good_a action_n when_o he_o observe_v how_o prone_a he_o be_v to_o be_v byase_v by_o man-fearing_a and_o man-pleasing_a as_o he_o express_v it_o from_o his_o dutiy_n this_o be_v a_o inexpressible_a trouble_n to_o he_o and_o he_o will_v bewail_v these_o thing_n with_o more_o bitterness_n than_o many_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v their_o grosser_n sin_n if_o he_o have_v at_o any_o time_n unaware_o and_o of_o a_o sudden_a speak_v although_o other_o it_o may_v be_v apprehend_v it_o be_v not_o so_o a_o uncomely_a word_n as_o he_o think_v unsuitable_a to_o the_o gravity_n which_o he_o conceive_v become_v he_o as_o a_o christian_a he_o will_v bewail_v it_o great_o and_o can_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n in_o himself_o till_o he_o have_v pray_v the_o person_n that_o he_o suppose_v may_v take_v offence_n will_v pass_v it_o by_o he_o will_v be_v often_o complain_v of_o his_o infirmity_n it_o be_v rare_a to_o hear_v he_o speak_v of_o his_o comfort_n or_o spiritual_a joy_n but_o he_o will_v be_v very_o frequent_a in_o discover_v what_o he_o find_v amiss_o in_o himself_o and_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v very_o much_o slight_v by_o other_o be_v curious_o observe_v by_o he_o in_o one_o of_o his_o letter_n he_o express_v himself_o thus_o my_o unthankfulness_n beside_o my_o other_o sinful_a infirmity_n grieve_v i_o sore_o and_o i_o be_o jealous_a of_o myself_o lest_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o rod_n do_v trouble_v i_o more_o than_o my_o grief_n for_o sin_n in_o another_o letter_n he_o have_v this_o passage_n i_o have_v find_v and_o do_v find_v a_o great_a difficulty_n as_o in_o other_o thing_n so_o in_o this_o of_o health_n to_o keep_v that_o narrow_a way_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o i_o find_v by_o woeful_a experience_n that_o i_o be_o often_o drip_v out_o either_o by_o too_o much_o indulgence_n or_o too_o much_o severity_n which_o may_v rather_o be_v term_v cruelty_n the_o lord_n make_v we_o wise_a to_o avoid_v both_o these_o extreme_n his_o great_a care_n be_v to_o keep_v himself_o not_o only_o from_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v in_o themselves_o sinful_a and_o unlawful_a but_o to_o abstain_v from_o all_o appearance_n of_o evil_n and_o to_o cut_v off_o occasion_n of_o offence_n from_o those_o that_o may_v seek_v it_o or_o be_v apt_a to_o take_v it_o he_o say_v he_o have_v find_v by_o many_o year_n experience_n that_o the_o great_a difficulty_n that_o lie_v upon_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v in_o the_o use_n of_o thing_n lawful_a and_o indifferent_a and_o he_o say_v he_o have_v often_o be_v unaware_o overtake_v this_o way_n sometime_o by_o the_o lead_n aside_o of_o his_o own_o corrupt_a nature_n which_o be_v ever_o willing_a to_o take_v the_o large_a size_n and_o sometime_o by_o the_o mistake_n of_o other_o who_o have_v misapprehend_v his_o intention_n and_o make_v a_o evil_a construction_n of_o his_o action_n yet_o god_n hereby_o have_v make_v he_o more_o wise_a and_o circumspect_a hereupon_o he_o will_v advise_v to_o forbear_v a_o lawful_a recreation_n at_o some_o time_n and_o place_n rather_o then_o by_o the_o use_n of_o our_o christian_a liberty_n occasion_n the_o censure_n of_o any_o that_o be_v loose_a and_o large_a walk_n though_o unjust_o raise_v another_o thing_n wherein_o the_o eminency_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o he_o appear_v resignation_n his_o eminency_n in_o self_n resignation_n be_v the_o resignation_n of_o himself_o and_o all_o he_o have_v to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n the_o nature_n of_o grace_n be_v very_o much_o see_v in_o this_o which_o we_o will_v as_o god_n will_v and_o our_o will_n do_v follow_v and_o not_o anticipate_v the_o divine_a and_o uncreated_a will_n this_o holy_a man_n attain_v a_o great_a excellency_n in_o this_o kind_n it_o be_v his_o great_a exercise_n to_o pray_v up_o his_o will_n into_o a_o one-ness_a with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n he_o observe_v it_o be_v very_o incident_a to_o our_o nature_n to_o desire_v to_o bring_v down_o god_n will_v to_o we_o but_o it_o be_v much_o better_o for_o we_o to_o pray_v up_o our_o will_n into_o he_o when_o any_o difficulty_n lie_v before_o he_o and_o his_o natural_a affection_n and_o inclination_n will_v have_v carry_v he_o such_o a_o way_n his_o first_o work_n be_v not_o to_o pray_v so_o much_o that_o he_o may_v obtain_v that_o which_o nature_n will_v desire_v but_o that_o this_o will_n may_v be_v bring_v up_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o that_o his_o spirit_n may_v be_v bring_v to_o a_o holy_a indifferency_n and_o the_o lord_n do_v eminent_o answer_v he_o herein_o for_o before_o the_o issue_n of_o providence_n be_v discover_v his_o will_n be_v usual_o bring_v up_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o in_o several_a great_a case_n and_o emergency_n in_o his_o life_n wherein_o he_o be_v much_o concern_v he_o have_v be_v know_v to_o say_v touch_v the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o such_o a_o business_n i_o have_v receive_v power_n through_o grace_n to_o acquiess_v in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n when_o it_o be_v manifest_a and_o as_o it_o be_v his_o great_a exercise_n to_o be_v much_o in_o self-resignation_n so_o he_o make_v it_o his_o endeavour_n to_o resign_v all_o he_o have_v unto_o you_o all_o only_o i_o desire_v to_o give_v you_o all_o up_o to_o god_n that_o have_v give_v you_o to_o i_o for_o a_o time_n his_o advice_n also_o to_o his_o child_n be_v to_o follow_v his_o example_n herein_o and_o to_o give_v up_o their_o near_a comfort_n to_o the_o lord_n daily_o his_o great_a desire_n be_v to_o be_v spiritual_a in_o all_o he_o do_v uprightness_n his_o uprightness_n and_o that_o grace_n and_o not_o nature_n or_o fleshly_a wisdom_n may_v sway_v he_o in_o every_o thing_n when_o a_o near_a relation_n desire_v his_o advice_n and_o connsel_n in_o a_o business_n of_o concernment_n before_o he_o come_v to_o give_v his_o advice_n he_o say_v oh_o that_o i_o may_v be_v whole_o spiritual_a that_o no_o carnal_a respect_n may_v blind_v my_o eye_n and_o this_o be_v his_o constant_a course_n when_o ever_o he_o be_v engage_v in_o any_o difficulty_n or_o to_o manage_v any_o business_n wherein_o he_o may_v be_v much_o concern_v as_o to_o the_o issue_n of_o it_o his_o first_o care_n wes_z to_o mind_v his_o duty_n and_o to_o study_v which_o way_n grace_n will_v teach_v he_o to_o act_v and_o his_o great_a care_n be_v that_o grace_n may_v have_v the_o principal_a sway_n in_o all_o his_o action_n that_o so_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o himself_o and_o other_o that_o not_o his_o natural_a affection_n or_o the_o principle_n of_o fleshly_a wisdom_n and_o carnal_a policy_n but_o grace_n and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n have_v lead_v he_o forth_o to_o what_o he_o do_v he_o be_v wont_a to_o say_v that_o duty_n be_v we_o but_o the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o thing_n belong_v to_o god_n we_o shall_v therefore_o study_v what_o our_o own_o duty_n be_v and_o leave_v the_o issue_n and_o success_n of_o of_o thing_n to_o god_n when_o one_o have_v desire_v his_o advice_n in_o a_o business_n of_o importance_n and_o great_a difficulty_n he_o write_v thus_o this_o one_o thing_n let_v we_o with_o incessant_a importunity_n crave_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o in_o this_o as_o in_o all_o other_o thing_n he_o
will_v teach_v we_o the_o way_n we_o shall_v go_v and_o that_o we_o may_v walk_v with_o god_n and_o follow_v he_o full_o in_o the_o integrity_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o then_o leave_v the_o success_n on_o his_o care_n who_o be_v the_o only_a wise_a and_o almighty_a and_o our_o father_n his_o advice_n be_v case_n his_o advice_n how_o to_o understand_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o difficult_a case_n that_o in_o all_o case_n of_o conscience_n we_o shall_v seek_v resolution_n from_o the_o word_n and_o in_o difficult_a case_n we_o shall_v ask_v the_o counsel_n of_o some_o faithful_a minister_n for_o say_v he_o the_o priest_n lip_n must_v preserve_v knowledge_n and_o we_o be_v to_o inquire_v the_o law_n at_o his_o mouth_n and_o god_n have_v appoint_v pastor_n and_o teacher_n for_o the_o perfect_a of_o the_o saint_n and_o for_o that_o advice_n we_o be_v to_o take_v from_o godly_a minister_n he_o will_v say_v that_o which_o they_o speak_v out_o of_o the_o pulpit_n be_v to_o be_v prefer_v before_o that_o which_o they_o speak_v occasional_o and_o in_o a_o more_o private_a way_n of_o discourse_n for_o it_o be_v to_o be_v suppose_v that_o they_o have_v consult_v much_o with_o god_n and_o have_v study_v and_o pray_v hard_o for_o that_o which_o they_o have_v deliver_v in_o public_a and_o therefore_o more_o authority_n be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o it_o then_o to_o any_o occasional_a or_o sudden_a counsel_n he_o say_v also_o that_o for_o a_o right_a understanding_n of_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o difficult_a case_n the_o best_a way_n be_v to_o reduce_v thing_n to_o their_o first_o general_a call_n he_o will_v still_o endeavour_v to_o manage_v and_o order_v his_o earthly_a affair_n so_o as_o that_o they_o may_v not_o entrench_v upon_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n nor_o he_o be_v abridge_v of_o fit_a and_o convenient_a time_n for_o the_o more_o immediate_a service_n of_o god_n religion_n be_v become_v so_o spiritual_o natural_a to_o he_o he_o how_o natural_a religion_n be_v become_v to_o he_o that_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v whole_o turn_v into_o it_o what_o ever_o he_o do_v and_o speak_v for_o the_o most_o part_n do_v not_o only_a savour_n of_o grace_n but_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v whole_o guide_v and_o act_v by_o grace_n grace_n seem_v to_o have_v make_v a_o perfect_a conquest_n of_o nature_n not_o but_o that_o he_o have_v the_o remnant_n of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n which_o he_o complain_v of_o as_o bitter_o as_o any_o but_o grace_n have_v so_o great_a sway_n and_o command_v in_o he_o that_o there_o be_v little_a else_o but_o grace_n appear_v to_o the_o view_n of_o other_o he_o say_v heretofore_o when_o he_o be_v carnal_a he_o can_v have_v wish_v many_o of_o the_o commandment_n raze_v out_o of_o the_o book_n of_o god_n but_o now_o he_o find_v his_o heart_n in_o some_o measure_n make_v suitable_a to_o the_o law_n he_o think_v his_o heart_n never_o in_o a_o right_a temper_n but_o when_o he_o can_v delight_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o will_v frequent_o mention_v that_o scripture_n bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o fear_v the_o lord_n that_o delight_v great_o in_o his_o commandment_n such_o be_v the_o delight_n and_o complacency_n that_o he_o take_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o the_o satisfaction_n that_o he_o find_v in_o they_o that_o not_o year_n before_o his_o death_n he_o have_v such_o a_o speech_n as_o this_o which_o he_o speak_v with_o much_o solemnity_n if_o i_o be_v sure_a that_o as_o the_o beast_n die_v so_o die_v the_o man_n yet_o will_v i_o not_o choose_v to_o be_v otherwise_o then_o i_o be_o among_o those_o many_o grace_n that_o he_o be_v eminent_a for_o christ_n his_o live_n by_o faith_n on_o christ_n that_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v most_o eminent_a in_o he_o be_v his_o faith_n and_o live_n upon_o christ_n this_o be_v the_o true_a root_n from_o whence_o his_o other_o great_a attainment_n in_o christianity_n do_v arise_v it_o be_v the_o great_a exercise_n of_o his_o life_n to_o go_v whole_o have_v a_o great_a esteem_n of_o he_o for_o that_o singular_a holiness_n and_o sanctity_n that_o they_o know_v to_o be_v in_o he_o the_o high_a thing_n that_o i_o have_v attain_v unto_o it_o be_v to_o go_v quite_o and_o clean_o out_o of_o myself_o and_o to_o roll_v myself_o whole_o upon_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n after_o all_o the_o grace_n he_o have_v attain_v unto_o he_o account_v it_o his_o great_a perfection_n to_o deny_v himself_o and_o to_o live_v whole_o upon_o christ_n herein_o imitate_v the_o bless_a apostle_n who_o after_o the_o great_a measure_n of_o holiness_n that_o he_o have_v attain_v yet_o make_v it_o his_o great_a desire_n to_o be_v sound_a in_o christ_n this_o holy_a man_n be_v so_o curious_a in_o this_o point_n of_o live_v entire_o upon_o christ_n as_o that_o he_o never_o suspect_v himself_o more_o or_o think_v worse_a of_o himself_o then_o when_o he_o find_v a_o secret_a inclination_n to_o look_v to_o somewhat_o in_o himself_o and_o can_v not_o find_v himself_o so_o clear_o bring_v off_o to_o act_n of_o self-denial_n one_o passage_n of_o his_o be_v very_o remarkable_a to_o this_o purpose_n i_o have_v be_v apt_a to_o question_v my_o condition_n much_o of_o late_a because_o when_o i_o have_v find_v thing_n amiss_o within_o i_o and_o have_v find_v out_o any_o salve_n i_o will_v be_v quiet_a and_o do_v not_o deny_v myself_o full_o believe_v and_o by_o holy_a submission_n and_o conformity_n to_o his_o will_n in_o life_n and_o death_n bless_a be_v god_n i_o have_v in_o my_o weak_a measure_n set_v my_o house_n in_o order_n etc._n something_o out_o of_o the_o word_n and_o when_o he_o find_v his_o spirit_n so_o low_a and_o so_o much_o spend_v that_o he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v as_o much_o as_o he_o have_v do_v former_o he_o say_v it_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o his_o soul_n that_o he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o for_o they_o his_o whole_a carriage_n during_o his_o sickness_n and_o at_o his_o death_n death_n his_o exemplary_a carriage_n at_o his_o death_n it_o be_v suitable_a to_o his_o life_n as_o he_o have_v live_v exemplary_o so_o he_o die_v exemplary_o the_o whole_a of_o his_o carriage_n at_o his_o death_n be_v as_o the_o world_n and_o seek_v your_o all_o in_o christ_n and_o in_o he_o you_o shall_v find_v all-sufficiency_n when_o some_o good_a people_n who_o be_v wont_a to_o meet_v together_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o build_v up_o one_o another_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n come_v to_o visit_v he_o he_o say_v continue_v in_o prayer_n hold_v on_o i_o be_o confident_a it_o be_v the_o way_n of_o god_n you_o be_v sheep_n during_o the_o time_n of_o his_o sickness_n some_o of_o his_o christian_a friend_n keep_v a_o fast_a for_o he_o as_o also_o in_o relation_n to_o public_a concernment_n and_o some_o be_v go_v from_o he_o to_o that_o exercise_n he_o say_v pray_v for_o i_o but_o especial_o for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n all_o the_o time_n of_o his_o sickness_n he_o have_v not_o the_o least_o cloud_n upon_o his_o spirit_n sickness_n the_o inward_a peace_n and_o spiritual_a comfort_n which_o he_o have_v in_o his_o sickness_n neither_o be_v satan_n permit_v in_o the_o least_o to_o disturb_v his_o peace_n when_o a_o minister_n that_o come_v to_o visit_v he_o ask_v he_o whether_o he_o have_v any_o temptation_n he_o answer_v no_o bless_a be_v the_o lord_n the_o have_v none_o so_o that_o although_o all_o his_o life_n time_n he_o have_v be_v full_a of_o conflict_n yet_o when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v he_o have_v the_o most_o perfect_a serenity_n after_o he_o have_v be_v sick_a some_o week_n he_o write_v thus_o to_o a_o near_a relation_n i_o yet_o live_v through_o mercy_fw-mi and_o do_v continue_v weak_a but_o god_n deal_v very_o gentle_o with_o i_o for_o my_o outward_a affliction_n be_v tolerable_a and_o his_o inward_a consolation_n be_v full_a of_o grace_n and_o heavenly_a sweetness_n these_o comfort_n abode_n and_o continue_v with_o he_o to_o the_o very_a last_o for_o at_o several_a time_n in_o his_o sickness_n and_o the_o same_o day_n that_o he_o die_v he_o be_v hear_v to_o say_v he_o have_v leave_v with_o i_o the_o comforter_n and_o when_o about_o a_o hour_n before_o he_o die_v his_o god_n i_o shall_v not_o be_v disappoint_v as_o his_o manner_n be_v in_o his_o life_n time_n self-denial_n his_o constancy_n in_o self-denial_n so_o it_o be_v observe_v by_o those_o that_o be_v most_o about_o he_o at_o his_o death_n he_o be_v much_o in_o the_o acknowledgement_n of_o his_o own_o nothingness_n and_o vileness_n and_o much_o in_o magnify_v the_o free_a grace_n &_o mercy_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o the_o minister_n that_o preach_v at_o his_o funeral_n have_v this_o passage_n concern_v he_o he_o be_v much_o in_o self_n denial_n even_o to_o the_o last_o look_v on_o all_o that_o he_o have_v do_v as_o nothing_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n in_o comparison_n of_o christ_n at_o one_o time_n when_o his_o wife_n come_v to_o he_o and_o say_v she_o pray_v that_o she_o may_v follow_v his_o step_n he_o reply_v follow_v christ_n follow_v
