circumstance_n first_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o they_o by_o scripture_n and_o second_o in_o defend_v of_o that_o truth_n against_o the_o manifold_a error_n of_o former_a writer_n and_o also_o against_o the_o manifold_a cavilation_n of_o sundry_a late_a opposer_n and_o therefore_o all_o those_o that_o upbraid_v his_o learned_a pain_n with_o the_o term_n of_o needless_a genealogy_n and_o unprofitable_a chronologie_n they_o be_v worthy_a to_o bear_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o own_o ignorance_n for_o howsoever_o they_o think_v in_o their_o own_o conceit_n they_o know_v much_o yet_o in_o deed_n &_o in_o truth_n they_o may_v know_v more_o to_o their_o great_a joy_n and_o comfort_n if_o they_o do_v not_o despise_v the_o holy_a rule_n i_o mean_v the_o afore-named_n circumstance_n wherewith_o god_n have_v garnish_v his_o bless_a word_n as_o a_o special_a help_n to_o guide_v every_o wise_a heart_a reader_n in_o the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o same_o and_o second_o this_o learned_a divine_a of_o bless_a memory_n have_v also_o declare_v his_o special_a love_n to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o add_v much_o help_n for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o think_v it_o more_o necessary_a to_o employ_v himself_o in_o give_v rule_n for_o the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o for_o the_o right_n expound_v of_o some_o common_a place_n wherein_o many_o writer_n do_v not_o agree_v because_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o right_o understand_v and_o therefore_o he_o have_v give_v we_o warning_n how_o to_o understand_v many_o common_a place_n as_o about_o predestination_n &_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o about_o the_o article_n common_o call_v christ_n descent_n into_o hell_n etc._n etc._n also_o he_o speak_v much_o and_o to_o great_a light_n upon_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o holy_a trinity_n and_o of_o the_o incarnation_n and_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n as_o also_o of_o the_o fall_n of_o man_n and_o of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o our_o redemption_n and_o of_o many_o other_o weighty_a point_n as_o appear_v in_o this_o ensue_a treatise_n and_o in_o many_o other_o of_o his_o work_n as_o in_o job_n ecclesiastes_n daniel_n and_o his_o large_a commentary_n on_o the_o appocalypsis_n etc._n etc._n now_o if_o this_o be_v true_a as_o it_o be_v most_o evident_a in_o the_o aforenamed_a book_n than_o it_o shall_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o all_o those_o that_o slander_n his_o learned_a pain_n because_o say_v they_o he_o teach_v no_o sanctification_n but_o they_o do_v little_o consider_v when_o they_o say_v so_o that_o the_o ground_n of_o sanctification_n consist_v in_o the_o holy_a and_o right_a knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o must_v first_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o mind_n &_o conscience_n before_o it_o can_v be_v practise_v in_o the_o life_n and_o conversation_n o_o but_o say_v some_o his_o write_n be_v not_o worth_a the_o read_n because_o they_o be_v so_o difficult_a &_o hard_a to_o understand_v i_o answer_v with_o s._n peter_n that_o many_o thing_n be_v hard_a to_o be_v understand_v in_o paul_n epistle_n 2_o pet._n 3_o 16._o shall_v we_o therefore_o not_o count_v they_o worth_a the_o read_n because_o they_o be_v somewhat_o difficult_a no_o no_o god_n require_v the_o pain_n of_o the_o mind_n for_o the_o understanding_n of_o his_o word_n for_o it_o be_v a_o treasure_n hide_v in_o the_o ground_n &_o therefore_o they_o must_v take_v pain_n to_o dig_v for_o it_o that_o will_v have_v it_o so_o if_o man_n can_v but_o endure_v the_o pain_n of_o the_o mind_n they_o will_v speak_v more_o reverendly_a of_o this_o man_n write_n but_o because_o man_n love_v such_o ease_n they_o can_v see_v the_o drift_n of_o his_o write_n and_o therefore_o well_o may_v his_o great_a learning_n lament_v because_o so_o few_o regard_n it_o for_o it_o be_v almost_o solitary_a and_o unknown_a to_o his_o own_o nation_n because_o few_o do_v know_v what_o his_o learned_a pain_n may_v further_o which_o be_v more_o precious_a than_o ruby_n yea_o therefore_o his_o knowledge_n do_v pour_v tear_n down_o her_o cheek_n because_o she_o be_v understand_v of_o none_o but_o i_o will_v to_o god_n that_o some_o learned_a man_n will_v take_v the_o pain_n to_o contrive_v all_o his_o work_n in_o to_o one_o volume_n that_o so_o his_o great_a learning_n may_v not_o perish_v in_o oblivion_n but_o that_o the_o age_n to_o come_v may_v have_v it_o in_o record_n for_o their_o help_n and_o furtherance_n in_o divinity_n study_n who_o will_v doubtless_o reap_v more_o fruit_n by_o they_o than_o we_o do_v by_o reason_n of_o our_o unthankfulnes_n and_o so_o the_o god_n of_o all_o peace_n be_v with_o thou_o christian_a reader_n and_o the_o lord_n give_v thou_o understanding_n in_o
