a_o joyful_a frame_n by_o influence_n or_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o deny_v not_o as_o a_o person_n afflict_a be_v so_o to_o pray_v and_o not_o by_o read_v of_o a_o prayer_n yet_o sing_v of_o psalm_n be_v one_o thing_n and_o prayer_n another_o may_v not_o a_o man_n spiritual_o sing_v one_o of_o david_n psalm_n or_o other_o scripture-hymn_n or_o sacred_a song_n because_o he_o do_v not_o compose_v it_o himself_o do_v you_o suppose_v that_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o those_o time_n have_v that_o special_a gift_n to_o bring_v forth_o a_o psalm_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a every_o man_n and_o woman_n some_o time_n or_o another_o may_v be_v merry_a or_o joyful_a in_o the_o lord_n and_o then_o they_o lie_v without_o exception_n under_o the_o same_o obligation_n to_o sing_v psalm_n you_o it_o seem_v admit_v of_o sing_v with_o a_o tuneable_a voice_n nor_o indeed_o be_v there_o any_o other_o sing_v know_v to_o mankind_n now_o if_o every_o man_n have_v not_o the_o special_a gift_n to_o bring_v forth_o a_o psalm_n both_o matter_n manner_n and_o tune_n etc._n etc._n by_o a_o immediate_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o find_v you_o suppose_v they_o can_v sing_v psalm_n according_a to_o this_o precept_n nor_o must_v they_o sing_v any_o psalm_n but_o of_o their_o own_o endite_v doubtless_o the_o weak_a person_n that_o have_v no_o special_a gift_n if_o merry_a in_o the_o lord_n be_v bind_v and_o oblige_v to_o sing_v psalm_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o therefore_o sing_v be_v not_o tie_v up_o to_o person_n who_o have_v a_o special_a gift_n so_o to_o sing_v beside_o the_o psalm_n be_v contain_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n which_o we_o be_v to_o sing_v the_o matter_n be_v already_o compose_v by_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o pray_v and_o sing_v great_o differ_v tho'_o both_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v by_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n brother_n there_o be_v a_o book_n of_o psalm_n leave_v for_o we_o in_o god_n word_n to_o sing_v by_o but_o no_o book_n of_o prayer_n be_v there_o leave_v for_o we_o to_o pray_v by_o therefore_o you_o say_v nothing_o nor_o be_v that_o doubtless_o true_a which_o you_o conceive_v from_o eph._n 5.4_o i.e._n that_o the_o apostle_n there_o give_v direction_n about_o sing_v but_o rather_o it_o be_v about_o speak_v viz._n that_o we_o shall_v not_o in_o our_o common_a discourse_n etc._n etc._n use_v foolish_a a_o psalm_n in_o the_o church_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o primitive_a time_n or_o as_o we_o have_v it_o record_v 1_o cor._n 14.26_o first_o you_o say_v the_o church_n have_v that_o which_o be_v chief_o intend_v by_o it_o in_o their_o solemn_a give_v of_o thanks_o and_o praise_v of_o god_n together_o as_o they_o have_v continual_a occasion_n and_o opportunity_n for_o it_o reply_n why_o do_v you_o say_v the_o church_n have_v that_o which_o be_v chief_o intend_v if_o the_o church_n have_v not_o the_o ordinance_n or_o thing_n itself_o be_v not_o this_o like_o what_o some_o say_v of_o sprinkle_v viz._n tho'_o baptism_n be_v perform_v by_o dip_v or_o apply_v the_o subject_n to_o the_o water_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n and_o we_o use_v sprinkle_v say_v they_o yet_o we_o have_v that_o which_o be_v chief_o intend_v by_o it_o for_o we_o use_v water_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o the_o subject_a and_o sprinkle_v with_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v mention_v as_o well_o as_o wash_n in_o his_o blood_n and_o we_o use_v the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n when_o we_o do_v it_o etc._n etc._n what_o be_v it_o your_o church_n have_v why_o you_o praise_v god_n together_o and_o so_o you_o ought_v and_o may_v every_o hour_n and_o yet_o have_v none_o of_o this_o ordinance_n because_o praise_v of_o god_n in_o prayer_n be_v not_o sing_v of_o his_o praise_n tho'_o praise_v of_o god_n be_v the_o chief_a thing_n intend_v yet_o it_o be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o musical_a or_o melodious_a sing_n of_o his_o praise_n which_o if_o you_o do_v not_o so_o you_o have_v not_o the_o chief_a thing_n intend_v why_o shall_v god_n enjoin_v his_o people_n to_o sing_v his_o praise_n if_o to_o praise_v he_o in_o prayer_n without_o sing_v be_v sufficient_a be_v not_o this_o to_o exalt_v your_o wisdom_n above_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n or_o to_o make_v void_a a_o gospel_n precept_n by_o your_o tradition_n read_v that_o in_o matthew_n 2._o it_o may_v be_v confident_o expect_v say_v you_o that_o if_o the_o lord_n people_n do_v more_o earnest_o pray_v and_o wait_v for_o a_o more_o plentiful_a pour_v forth_o of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n there_o may_v be_v more_o assistance_n afford_v for_o endite_v and_o utter_v a_o psalm_n or_o spiritual_a song_n according_a to_o the_o primitive_a pattern_n 1_o reply_n if_o you_o have_v that_o which_o be_v chief_o intend_v by_o sing_v what_o need_n be_v there_o to_o expect_v any_o more_o of_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v perform_v to_o indite_v a_o psalm_n or_o to_o pray_v for_o such_o pouring_n forth_o of_o the_o spirit_n to_o that_o end_n tho'_o we_o all_o have_v cause_n to_o pray_v for_o more_o of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n to_o be_v pour_v forth_o yet_o not_o to_o revive_v the_o practice_n of_o any_o gospel_n
