the_o same_o reverend_a godly_a and_o learned_a assembly_n which_o judge_v it_o expedient_a to_o take_v away_o the_o common-prayer_n do_v yet_o recommend_v the_o lord_n prayer_n to_o be_v use_v in_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n because_o it_o be_v take_v their_o own_o word_n in_o the_o directory_n not_o only_o a_o pattern_n of_o prayer_n but_o itself_o a_o most_o comprehensive_a prayer_n as_o the_o same_o measure_n may_v be_v a_o standard_n to_o frame_v and_o try_v other_o measure_n by_o and_o may_v beside_o be_v use_v to_o measure_v withal_o so_o may_v this_o prayer_n of_o our_o lord_n be_v use_v both_o as_o a_o pattern_n of_o prayer_n to_o frame_v our_o prayer_n by_o as_o a_o standard_n to_o examine_v they_o by_o and_o as_o a_o prayer_n itself_o also_o and_o true_o if_o our_o saviour_n have_v mean_v this_o prayer_n only_o for_o a_o pattern_n and_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v unlawful_a to_o uss_v it_o as_o a_o prayer_n i_o believe_v he_o so_o plain_a and_o so_o good_a a_o speaker_n for_o never_o man_n speak_v like_o he_o and_o in_o his_o mouth_n be_v find_v no_o guile_n that_o he_o will_v never_o have_v answer_v such_o a_o request_n lord_n teach_v we_o to_o pray_v as_o john_n also_o teach_v his_o disciple_n in_o such_o express_a language_n when_o you_o pray_v say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n without_o some_o caution_n limitation_n or_o restriction_n to_o prevent_v mistake_n for_o have_v it_o be_v possible_a that_o when_o our_o lord_n say_v when_o you_o pray_v say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n that_o his_o sense_n and_o meaning_n shall_v be_v when_o you_o pray_v you_o must_v not_o say_v our_o father_n etc._n etc._n you_o must_v not_o say_v these_o word_n at_o any_o time_n or_o in_o any_o case_n but_o only_o pray_v always_o after_o this_o pattern_n we_o may_v suppose_v the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v have_v add_v some_o explanation_n or_o interpretation_n as_o in_o other_o case_n viz._n john_n 7.38_o 39_o and_o john_n 2.20_o 21._o the_o rather_o consider_v there_o be_v no_o room_n here_o as_o in_o other_o place_n for_o a_o figurative_a sense_n and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o office_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o lead_v we_o into_o all_o truth_n and_o so_o to_o preserve_v we_o from_o error_n and_o that_o the_o word_n be_v so_o plain_a a_o form_n of_o prayer_n and_o so_o plain_a for_o the_o use_n of_o they_o so_o that_o plain_a need_v not_o upon_o supposition_n that_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n that_o these_o word_n shall_v be_v use_v as_o a_o prayer_n let_v we_o reason_n the_o matter_n a_o little_a what_o can_v be_v say_v against_o use_v this_o prayer_n of_o christ_n now_o which_o may_v not_o have_v be_v object_v or_o pretend_v by_o aaron_n and_o his_o son_n for_o their_o not_o use_v the_o form_n of_o blessing_n prescribe_v of_o old_a numb_a 6.23_o 24._o yea_o how_o shall_v we_o now_o justify_v our_o practice_n of_o blessing_n or_o pray_v for_o a_o blessing_n in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n in_o the_o close_a of_o our_o sermon_n if_o it_o be_v utter_o unlawful_a to_o pray_v unto_o god_n in_o the_o word_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o our_o sermon_n what_o be_v the_o disciple_n come_v to_o be_v above_o his_o master_n and_o the_o servant_n above_o his_o lord_n again_o how_o can_v we_o think_v that_o god_n that_o hear_v our_o prayer_n who_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n in_o such_o a_o measure_n as_o the_o apostle_n have_v shall_v not_o regard_v his_o son_n prayer_n shall_v therefore_o not_o hear_v his_o child_n prayer_n because_o present_v unto_o he_o in_o his_o own_o and_o only_a son_n word_n yea_o will_v god_n the_o father_n hear_v our_o prayer_n indict_v by_o the_o holy_a spirit_n &_o not_o hear_v we_o when_o we_o pray_v that_o which_o his_o son_n make_v &_o put_v in_o our_o hand_n &_o heart_n and_o do_v not_o the_o same_o holy_a spirit_n that_o indite_v our_o prayer_n indite_v the_o prayer_n of_o christ_n too_o and_o do_v not_o we_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n by_o measure_n receive_v of_o christ_n fullness_n as_o all_o other_o grace_n so_o also_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n and_o supplication_n i_o dare_v say_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v not_o therefore_o out_o of_o love_n out_o of_o conceit_n with_o his_o own_o conception_n because_o they_o be_v not_o new_a must_v all_o our_o prayer_n necessary_o be_v put_v up_o in_o our_o saviour_n name_n if_o they_o find_v acceptance_n if_o they_o be_v hear_v and_o answer_v and_o must_v they_o in_o no_o wise_a at_o no_o time_n in_o any_o case_n be_v send_v up_o in_o his_o own_o word_n or_o will_v jesus_n christ_n the_o great_a favourite_n and_o master_n of_o request_n in_o heaven_n refuse_v to_o present_v our_o petition_n because_o of_o his_o own_o draw_v or_o indite_v must_v we_o always_o when_o we_o pray_v pray_v after_o this_o manner_n and_o must_v we_o never_o when_o we_o pray_v say_v our_o father_n &_o c_o if_o one_o be_v scripture_n be_v not_o the_o other_o also_o yea_o doubtless_o both_o and_o in_o both_o we_o have_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n for_o he_o that_o say_v that_o say_v this_o also_o must_v we_o always_o keep_v to_o christ_n sense_n and_o indifferent_o use_v the_o word_n of_o either_o and_o so_o may_v pray_v either_o in_o the_o form_n of_o word_n record_v by_o the_o evangelist_n matthew_n or_o else_o according_a to_o this_o form_n in_o the_o text_n we_o think_v it_o not_o unlawful_a but_o expedient_a in_o the_o celebration_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n to_o retain_v the_o word_n of_o some_o of_o the_o evangelist_n or_o of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n 1_o cor._n 11._o upon_o that_o occasion_n and_o so_o i_o see_v no_o sufficient_a reason_n but_o we_o may_v and_o that_o it_o be_v expedient_a to_o use_v christ_n own_o word_n either_o at_o his_o first_o or_o second_o delivery_n of_o it_o either_o as_o record_v by_o one_o or_o the_o other_o evangelist_n and_o last_o who_o know_v but_o jesus_n christ_n speak_v syriack_n the_o language_n then_o common_o use_v by_o the_o jew_n may_v express_v himself_o in_o the_o same_o syriack_n word_n at_o both_o time_n and_o yet_o the_o evangelist_n render_v the_o same_o diverse_o in_o another_o tongue_n keep_v still_o the_o same_o sense_n as_o the_o same_o greek_a word_n may_v be_v true_o translate_v and_o yet_o render_v in_o english_a in_o several_a or_o diverse_a word_n but_o all_o to_o the_o same_o sense_n obj._n but_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o so_o as_o the_o holy_a spirit_n immediate_o move_v we_o or_o suggest_v to_o we_o for_o matter_n and_o word_n and_o method_n and_o so_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v tie_v to_o any_o form_n of_o prayer_n possible_o this_o be_v and_o may_v be_v use_v for_o a_o time_n namely_o till_o christ_n be_v glorify_v and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n give_v as_o john_n form_n may_v last_v till_o jesus_n christ_n give_v a_o new_a one_o so_o this_o form_n of_o prayer_n may_v be_v of_o use_n until_o the_o come_n down_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o teach_v christian_n to_o pray_v of_o themselves_o without_o this_o or_o any_o other_o form_n ans_fw-fr to_o this_o objection_n i_o say_v three_o thing_n 1._o that_o we_o be_v now_o to_o pray_v in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o a_o right_a sense_n but_o not_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o manner_n above_o allege_v and_o so_o to_o say_v no_o more_o do_v those_o before_o christ_n come_v 2._o that_o we_o may_v true_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o our_o duty_n although_o we_o use_v the_o lord_n prayer_n 3._o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v not_o take_v away_o the_o lord_n prayer_n but_o that_o notwithstanding_o it_o may_v be_v use_v in_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n and_o her_o member_n until_o christ_n come_v again_o of_o the_o first_o all_o christian_n it_o be_v true_a must_v pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o all_o minister_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o preach_v in_o the_o evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o word_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v and_o yet_o this_o hinder_v not_o but_o we_o may_v and_o must_v study_n and_o premeditate_v for_o our_o sermon_n not_o always_o expect_v extraordinary_a supply_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o as_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v give_v we_o always_o in_o that_o hour_n what_o to_o preach_v and_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v we_o that_o preach_v or_o speak_v but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o we_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v know_v to_o we_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n in_o the_o scripture_n we_o be_v to_o study_v they_o and_o the_o matter_n contain_v in_o they_o and_o to_o preach_v the_o word_n of_o god_n scripture-truthe_n plain_o and_o affectionate_o as_o those_o who_o have_v find_v favour_n to_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o have_v our_o understanding_n open_v to_o understand_v the_o scripture_n to_o have_v our_o will_n bow_v to_o god_n reveal_v will_n and_o our_o affection_n warm_v with_o love_n to_o the_o truth_n and_o zeal_n for_o it_o and_o as_o those_o who_o have_v in_o themselves_o experiment_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o declare_v unto_o other_o beside_o minister_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o read_v the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o in_o so_o do_v although_o for_o the_o present_a they_o be_v tie_v unto_o word_n yet_o this_o do_v in_o no_o wise_n quench_v the_o spirit_n the_o scripture_n themselves_o be_v dictate_v by_o the_o spirit_n so_o when_o we_o pray_v we_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v for_o such_o thing_n and_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n we_o be_v to_o pray_v in_o faith_n to_o come_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n name_n merit_n mediation_n trust_v to_o be_v hear_v and_o answer_v for_o christ_n sake_n with_o earnestness_n and_o importunity_n and_o so_o with_o such_o sigh_n and_o groan_n which_o be_v unutterable_a which_o can_v sufficient_o be_v express_v in_o word_n 2._o as_o believer_n before_o christ_n particular_o moses_n and_o aaron_n have_v the_o spirit_n and_o his_o help_n and_o assistance_n in_o prayer_n so_o far_o as_o be_v requisite_a notwithstanding_o they_o sometime_o use_v prescribe_v form_n of_o god_n own_o indite_v &_o appoint_v and_o as_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o pray_v in_o the_o spirit_n when_o he_o pray_v in_o the_o word_n of_o david_n psal_n 22.1_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o so_o those_o that_o be_v christ_n may_v pray_v also_o in_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o use_v the_o prayer_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v a_o prayer_n for_o matter_n method_n word_n compose_v by_o he_o who_o have_v the_o spirit_n without_o measure_n &_o record_v in_o the_o very_a form_n of_o a_o prayer_n and_o with_o this_o preface_n when_o you_o pray_v say_v etc._n etc._n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o be_v by_o the_o evangelist_n move_v and_o assist_v infallible_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n if_o that_o place_n be_v urge_v 1_o cor._n 14.15_o i_o will_v pray_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o understand_v also_o i_o answer_v it_o follow_v i_o will_v sing_v with_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o understand_v also_o so_o that_o if_o the_o former_a part_n can_v possible_o with_o any_o good_a reason_n be_v expound_v so_o as_o to_o debar_v we_o from_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n the_o latter_a will_v exclude_v david_n and_o all_o scripture-psalme_n too_o out_o of_o the_o church_n but_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o that_o place_n be_v of_o another_o importance_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o context_n and_o that_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v this_o i_o will_v not_o make_v use_n of_o the_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n enable_v i_o to_o speak_v in_o a_o unknown_a or_o strange_a language_n either_o in_o pray_v to_o or_o praise_v of_o god_n in_o the_o church_n where_o it_o be_v not_o understand_v by_o the_o unlearned_a and_o therefore_o can_v be_v to_o edification_n my_o own_o spirit_n or_o i_o may_v indeed_o pray_v according_a to_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o make_v use_n outward_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o tongue_n that_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o pray_v but_o i_o make_v no_o use_n of_o my_o understanding_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o other_o i_o resolve_v therefore_o so_o to_o pray_v and_o so_o to_o sing_v as_o i_o may_v be_v understand_v by_o other_o even_o as_o if_o i_o have_v no_o such_o gift_n of_o tongue_n as_o a_o man_n will_v pray_v that_o have_v not_o that_o gift_n of_o tongue_n which_o be_v a_o extraordinary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n 3._o i_o come_v to_o my_o three_o proposition_n and_o that_o be_v to_o prove_v that_o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o take_v away_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n as_o a_o prayer_n and_o be_v it_o so_o as_o be_v presume_v in_o the_o objection_n that_o it_o be_v give_v only_o for_o that_o time_n until_o the_o come_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o that_o it_o be_v out_o of_o date_n in_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n even_o this_o evangelical_n form_n of_o prayer_n like_o the_o legal_a observation_n i_o say_v be_v it_o so_o than_o the_o use_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n shall_v cease_v both_o as_o a_o pattern_n and_o as_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n it_o shall_v neither_o be_v any_o more_o since_o pentecost_n a_o directory_n or_o liturgy_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o teach_v christian_n to_o pray_v and_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o promise_v do_v not_o necessary_o take_v away_o all_o help_n or_o direction_n from_o christ_n or_o from_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o prophet_n so_o that_o they_o shall_v thenceforth_o be_v void_a and_o of_o none_o effect_n to_o all_o intent_n and_o
