earth_n and_o from_o his_o presence_n &_o spirit_n hell_n can_v hide_v nor_o the_o deep_n cover_v though_o god_n behold_v all_o the_o wicked_a a_o far_o off_o and_o they_o be_v without_o he_o as_o to_o any_o live_a sense_n union_n or_o enjoyment_n their_o mind_n be_v estrange_v from_o his_o light_n in_o they_o which_o in_o that_o state_n appear_v or_o shine_v in_o darkness_n though_o it_o flesh_n that_o he_o may_v condemn_v sin_n in_o the_o flesh_n that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v fulfil_v in_o they_o that_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n mark_v within_o be_v the_o fulfil_n and_o effect_n of_o christ_n obedience_n rom._n 8._o again_o for_o w.b._n to_o argue_v that_o because_o the_o saint_n be_v in_o darkness_n in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o unregenerate_a state_n that_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o have_v either_o god_n christ_n or_o the_o spirit_n in_o he_o in_o that_o state_n this_o argument_n be_v fallacious_a for_o he_o may_v as_o well_o argue_v that_o the_o light_n can_v shine_v in_o darkness_n whereas_o a_o man_n may_v have_v the_o light_n in_o he_o when_o he_o iâ—_n not_o in_o it_o or_o walk_v not_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v that_o god_n or_o his_o presence_n be_v not_o in_o the_o world_n because_o the_o world_n know_v he_o not_o but_o be_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o that_o sense_n without_o god_n this_o be_v absurd_a and_o fallacious_a of_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o argument_n bapt._n to_o what_o then_o shall_v such_o turn_v within_o for_o light_n that_o have_v there_o nothing_o but_o darkness_n answ._n this_o contradict_v his_o former_a confess_v that_o light_n be_v in_o every_o man_n that_o do_v convince_v of_o sin_n which_o be_v something_o beside_o darkness_n but_o there_o be_v those_o that_o put_v darkness_n for_o light_n and_o he_o have_v herein_o do_v no_o less_o to_o his_o own_o confutation_n and_o sure_o that_o light_n in_o every_o man_n that_o convince_v of_o sin_n be_v worth_a the_o turn_n to_o to_o lead_v the_o mind_n out_o of_o sin_n bapt._n the_o four_o proof_n isaiah_n 8.20_o from_o this_o may_v be_v gather_v that_o those_o that_o be_v not_o principled_a with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o testimony_n of_o christ_n but_o contrary_a thereto_o do_v exhort_v be_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o have_v the_o law_n place_v in_o his_o heart_n viz._n the_o ten_o commandment_n that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o the_o substance_n of_o they_o thus_o far_o he_o have_v in_o plain_a word_n confess_v to_o a_o light_n in_o every_o man_n though_o other_o while_o he_o affirm_v they_o have_v no_o light_n no_o not_o any_o light_n in_o they_o who_o know_v not_o but_o act_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o the_o reader_n may_v see_v how_o he_o have_v give_v a_o deadly_a blow_n to_o his_o own_o evil_a cause_n against_o the_o light_n for_o may_v not_o i_o as_o well_o argue_v against_o he_o that_o if_o some_o have_v not_o any_o light_n in_o they_o than_o no_o convince_a light_n and_o how_o then_o be_v the_o law_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n in_o every_o man_n but_o then_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n if_o the_o substance_n of_o that_o law_n or_o those_o commandment_n be_v in_o every_o man_n than_o this_o be_v not_o natural_a but_o spiritual_a the_o law_n be_v spiritual_a as_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o substance_n of_o this_o law_n enjoin_v to_o love_v the_o lord_n god_n with_o all_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o thy_o neighbour_n as_o it_o as_o the_o quaker_n christ_n this_o show_v the_o great_a ignorance_n and_o folly_n of_o this_o our_o opposer_n and_o his_o gross_a and_o apparent_a contradiction_n and_o it_o be_v not_o his_o man_n who_o be_v dark_a by_o the_o same_o reason_n as_o before_o the_o light_n of_o christ_n may_v be_v where_o it_o be_v cloud_v and_o veil_v with_o darkness_n and_o it_o do_v for_o a_o time_n apostle_n john_n touch_v christ_n the_o light_n bapt._n the_o spirit_n in_o man_n and_o obedience_n to_o it_o be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o man_n union_n with_o god_n but_o the_o reception_n of_o preach_v to_o they_o outward_o what_o do_v the_o saint_n preach_v to_o in_o people_n what_o be_v it_o that_o can_v receive_v and_o close_v with_o their_o doctrine_n in_o they_o and_o what_o be_v it_o in_o the_o conscience_n that_o they_o be_v a_o good_a savour_n to_o and_o if_o there_o be_v many_o of_o the_o heathen_a that_o never_o hear_v their_o doctrine_n outward_o nor_o read_v the_o scripture_n as_o in_o pag._n 16._o what_o must_v become_v of_o they_o must_v they_o be_v condemn_v and_o yet_o never_o have_v a_o spiritual_a light_n in_o they_o how_o then_o be_v they_o without_o excuse_n but_o of_o this_o ignorance_n and_o narrow_a spirit_n we_o have_v see_v sufficient_a among_o such_o opposer_n of_o the_o light_n of_o christ_n in_o their_o deny_v its_o free_a extent_n to_o all_o bapt._n and_o now_o the_o baptist_n say_v have_v show_v that_o the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o every_o man_n be_v neither_o god_n christ_n nor_o the_o spirit_n he_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v it_o his_o next_o work_n to_o show_v you_o what_o light_n that_o be_v in_o every_o man_n that_o do_v convince_v and_o reprove_v he_o for_o sin_n or_o that_o a_o wicked_a man_n upon_o sin_n commit_v receive_v check_n from_o that_o be_v conscience_n there_o be_v a_o conscience_n in_o every_o man_n that_o be_v at_o work_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o accuse_v or_o excuse_v rom._n 2.15_o answ._n by_o this_o he_o have_v evident_o confute_v and_o contradict_v himself_o 1._o in_o confess_v a_o light_n in_o every_o man_n convince_a and_o reprove_v for_o sin_n contrary_a to_o his_o tell_v we_o of_o no_o light_n not_o any_o light_n nothing_o but_o darkness_n in_o they_o that_o speak_v not_o according_a to_o the_o word_n 2._o in_o his_o confess_v to_o a_o conscience_n that_o do_v convince_v reprove_v and_o check_v the_o wicked_a for_o sin_n which_o conscience_n in_o that_o capacity_n sure_o be_v right_o and_o true_o inform_v by_o a_o true_a principle_n or_o light_n because_o it_o reprove_v for_o sin_n and_o evil_n and_o stand_v against_o the_o wicked_a which_o must_v needs_o be_v when_o conscience_n be_v convict_v awaken_v
be_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o which_o god_n expect_v obedience_n sure_o that_o which_o teach_v man_n to_o love_v the_o lord_n god_n with_o all_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n teach_v they_o the_o substance_n of_o true_a worship_n and_o the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v pure_a convert_v the_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v probable_a many_o that_o have_v a_o sense_n of_o this_o law_n of_o god_n within_o and_o his_o worship_n may_v not_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o these_o baptist_n nor_o come_v under_o their_o form_n of_o water-baptism_n which_o such_o a_o great_a stress_n they_o lie_v upon_o and_o yet_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n and_o save_v notwithstanding_o be_v baptize_v by_o the_o spirit_n bapt._n there_o be_v that_o light_n and_o understanding_n still_o leave_v in_o nature_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o there_o be_v worship_n due_a to_o he_o but_o the_o light_n in_o man_n leave_v he_o short_a of_o what_o the_o true_a god_n be_v and_o what_o worship_n be_v due_a to_o he_o answ._n the_o light_n that_o god_n have_v give_v in_o man_n do_v not_o only_o show_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o a_o worship_n due_a but_o also_o lead_v he_o to_o know_v the_o true_a god_n and_o his_o worship_n where_o it_o be_v obey_v as_o it_o do_v to_o those_o gentile_n speak_v of_o in_o rom._n 1.19_o 20_o 21._o when_o that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v manifest_a god_n in_o every_o man_n be_v certain_a the_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n within_o as_o be_v confess_v be_v certain_a conscience_n when_o act_v by_o the_o light_n and_o law_n of_o god_n within_o be_v not_o uncertain_a in_o its_o check_n against_o sin_n bapt._n for_o if_o that_o light_n that_o be_v in_o man_n be_v darkness_n or_o veil_v with_o gross_a erorr_v and_o so_o the_o soul_n run_v into_o strange_a enormity_n how_o sad_a will_v it_o be_v for_o that_o soul_n that_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o follow_v it_o this_o be_v the_o quaker_n principle_n not_o only_o to_o look_v for_o conviction_n which_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o none_o of_o which_o can_v true_o be_v deem_v darkness_n though_o some_o put_v light_a for_o darkness_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o principle_n touch_v the_o light_n within_o be_v evident_o verify_v and_o prove_v both_o from_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n as_o also_o from_o our_o adversary_n own_o confession_n therefore_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o principle_n which_o depend_v upon_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v true_a the_o light_n of_o christ_n within_o be_v the_o fundamental_a or_o most_o bind_a as_o w.b._n have_v confess_v so_o the_o less_o need_n be_v say_v to_o his_o frivolous_a objection_n against_o we_o in_o other_o particular_n howbeit_o some_o thing_n may_v be_v observe_v touch_v several_a passage_n follow_v bapt._n those_o that_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n to_o lead_v they_o if_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o rule_n what_o rule_n have_v they_o answ._n without_o the_o guidance_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o right_a use_n and_o end_n of_o the_o scripture_n can_v be_v know_v they_o be_v as_o a_o book_n seal_v only_o by_o the_o spirit_n true_o open_v as_o to_o their_o not_o have_v the_o spirit_n to_o lead_v they_o that_o be_v but_o a_o beg_a the_o question_n and_o contradict_v much_o of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v before_o for_o how_o be_v any_o say_v not_o to_o without_o it_o as_o to_o its_o conviction_n and_o reproof_n though_o not_o have_v it_o as_o to_o the_o true_a sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o guidance_n life_n virtue_n and_o glory_n of_o its_o ministration_n they_o be_v in_o that_o which_o be_v sensual_a and_o devilish_a bapt._n god_n never_o design_v the_o spirit_n to_o be_v man_n rule_n but_o to_o be_v man_n assistant_n and_o helper_n to_o walk_v and_o build_v by_o the_o rule_n the_o scripture_n do_v direct_v he_o to_o his_o duty_n pag._n 19_o answ._n and_o be_v not_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o the_o carp_v at_o any_o thing_n that_o may_v agree_v with_o sound_a doctrine_n though_o he_o have_v carp_v at_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v sound_a and_o now_o do_v he_o not_o deserve_v to_o be_v try_v by_o his_o own_o rule_n and_o ask_v where_o he_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n that_o be_v let_v out_o by_o the_o spear_n in_o so_o many_o word_n and_o where_o in_o so_o many_o word_n that_o blood_n shed_v without_o the_o gat_n of_o jerusalem_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n as_o in_o pag._n 28._o whereas_o if_o that_o be_v his_o justifier_n and_o saviour_n where_o be_v it_o it_o be_v not_o in_o be_v pag._n 40._o so_o then_o his_o saviour_n it_o appear_v be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v whereas_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o justify_v purge_v at_o other_o time_n he_o will_v make_v we_o believe_v the_o scripture_n be_v his_o best_a and_o most_o perfect_a rule_n but_o here_o deny_v the_o general_a extent_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o frequent_o own_v in_o scripture_n without_o any_o such_o restriction_n or_o exception_n as_o
cause_n of_o salvation_n but_o the_o effect_n and_o by_o what_o rule_n do_v w._n b._n thus_o essay_n to_o correct_v the_o scripture_n which_o he_o count_v his_o rule_n or_o thus_o detect_v the_o say_n of_o chiist_n as_o be_v so_o improper_a as_o give_v that_o to_o one_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o another_o in_o such_o a_o high_a concernment_n and_o have_v not_o he_o herein_o in_o effect_n the_o body_n of_o christ_n that_o suffer_v death_n upon_o the_o cross_n and_o sometime_o upon_o the_o shed_v the_o blood_n out_o of_o it_o deny_v christ_n as_o the_o word_n and_o son_n of_o god_n to_o be_v the_o saviour_n contrary_n to_o plain_a scripture_n as_o before_o be_v show_v bapt._n christ_n ascribe_v and_o attribute_v that_o to_o the_o godhead_n that_o proper_o refer_v to_o the_o manhood_n be_v a_o stumbling-stone_n to_o this_o poor_a people_n pag._n 35._o answ._n what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o charge_n christ_n with_o improper_a doctrine_n or_o impertinent_a speak_n wherein_o w._n b._n redeem_v save_v etc._n etc._n and_o that_o god_n be_v in_o christ_n reconcile_n the_o world_n if_o our_o adversary_n shall_v say_v this_o be_v improper_a and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o error_n to_o ascribe_v that_o to_o god_n the_o eternal_a word_n or_o to_o christ_n as_o the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n that_o proper_o belong_v to_o his_o manhood_n as_o the_o son_n of_o mary_n not_o as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o he_o accuse_v christ_n to_o the_o very_a same_o purpose_n with_o speak_v improper_o what_o can_v we_o expect_v from_o such_o a_o one_o but_o the_o like_a reproach_n and_o contradiction_n of_o sinner_n that_o christ_n jesus_n the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n undergo_v and_o yet_o this_o proud_a presumptuous_a opposer_n of_o truth_n will_v pretend_v the_o scripture_n or_o saying_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v his_o rule_n but_o when_o they_o please_v he_o not_o he_o will_v assay_v to_o correct_v they_o by_o his_o dark_a confuse_a meaning_n and_o corrupt_a interpretation_n who_o further_o add_v to_o his_o corrupt_a doctrine_n as_o follow_v bapt._n but_o as_o he_o be_v god_n without_o be_v man_n or_o the_o root_n and_o not_o the_o offspring_n he_o can_v not_o save_v man_n for_o god_n be_v the_o offend_v and_o man_n the_o offender_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o the_o offend_v to_o acquit_v and_o clear_v the_o guilty_a and_o to_o discharge_v the_o debt_n and_o to_o embrace_v the_o offender_n for_o no_o man_n out_o of_o christ_n can_v see_v god_n face_n and_o live_v answ._n here_o it_o appear_v what_o he_o mean_v by_o save_a man_n and_o clear_v the_o guilty_a only_o a_o pacify_v of_o god_n and_o a_o acquit_v man_n from_o the_o penalty_n as_o he_o imagine_v which_o as_o he_o say_v god_n can_v not_o do_v but_o something_o that_o be_v not_o god_n but_o the_o offspring_n of_o man_n as_o he_o say_v so_o by_o this_o he_o do_v not_o mean_a salvation_n to_o be_v a_o work_n wrought_v in_o man_n as_o a_o save_n and_o deliver_v from_o sin_n or_o the_o offence_n within_o but_o a_o satisfaction_n make_v to_o god_n that_o he_o may_v embrace_v the_o offender_n and_o yet_o he_o must_v be_v in_o christ_n that_o see_v god_n face_n what_o gross_a contradiction_n be_v this_o and_o what_o falsehood_n &_o blasphemy_n be_v it_o to_o say_v god_n can_v not_o save_v or_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o discharge_v the_o debt_n where_o first_o observe_v that_o if_o salvation_n consist_v in_o pacify_v or_o satisfy_v god_n without_o any_o inward_a work_n wrought_v by_o he_o in_o man_n which_o be_v a_o
