god_n and_o man_n for_o be_v there_o any_o of_o they_o which_o be_v slander_v with_o some_o foul_a crime_n whereby_o they_o shall_v receive_v great_a injury_n or_o be_v spiteful_o rail_v upon_o if_o some_o of_o their_o near_a friend_n sit_v by_o and_o hold_v their_o tougue_n when_o they_o know_v they_o be_v injury_v that_o can_v by_o and_o by_o feel_v &_o say_v this_o be_v cold_a friendship_n that_o they_o can_v not_o have_v deal_v so_o unlovinglie_o towards_o their_o friend_n by_o whomsoeever_n they_o shall_v have_v hear_v they_o so_o abuse_v they_o can_v not_o have_v hold_v their_o tongue_n then_o belike_o god_n nor_o his_o truth_n be_v none_o of_o their_o dear_a friend_n that_o they_o can_v put_v up_o such_o injury_n do_v towards_o he_o there_o be_v plenty_n of_o this_o patience_n in_o all_o place_n but_o godliness_n can_v be_v suffer_v to_o come_v near_o for_o he_o be_v a_o break_v peace_n and_o a_o very_a unpleasant_a fellow_n he_o be_v over_o rough_a and_o precise_a and_o over_o captious_a there_o be_v good_a neighbourhood_n and_o friendship_n before_o he_o come_v they_o can_v be_v merry_a together_o and_o be_v in_o unity_n without_o any_o jar_n have_v it_o not_o be_v better_a to_o use_v gentleness_n and_o patience_n then_o to_o have_v this_o broil_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o love_n &_o where_o that_o be_v not_o there_o be_v nothing_o good_a o_o miserable_a day_n this_o be_v the_o good_a love_n now_o among_o man_n that_o they_o can_v love_v one_o another_o but_o they_o must_v hate_v god_n to_o have_v peace_n and_o concord_n with_o man_n to_o be_v at_o odds_n with_o god_n for_o man_n sake_n to_o put_v up_o the_o dishonour_v of_o his_o name_n not_o to_o continue_v in_o patience_n unless_o godliness_n be_v want_v the_o ungodlie_a world_n and_o lewd_a nature_n that_o be_v in_o man_n take_v occasion_n to_o accuse_v godly_a zeal_n under_o this_o pretence_n and_o to_o find_v fault_n with_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n because_o say_v they_o it_o set_v man_n at_o strife_n but_o we_o must_v learn_v in_o this_o place_n to_o join_v godliness_n with_o our_o patience_n for_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v be_v find_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o irreligious_a and_o profane_a dog_n although_o we_o pretend_v love_n never_o so_o much_o the_o time_n will_v not_o suffer_v to_o handle_v the_o rest_n which_o remain_v in_o this_o text._n let_v we_o rememeber_v that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v and_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o pursue_v these_o excellent_a virtue_n that_o so_o we_o may_v approve_v ourselves_o to_o be_v right_a christian_n and_o look_v for_o the_o bless_a hope_n promise_v in_o jesu_n christ_n the_o three_o sermon_n 7_o and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n and_o with_o brotherlie_a kindness_n love_n 8_o for_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v with_o you_o and_o abound_v they_o will_v make_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v idle_a nor_o unfruitful_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 9_o for_o he_o that_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n be_v blind_a and_o see_v not_o a_o far_o off_o and_o have_v forget_v that_o he_o be_v purge_v from_o his_o old_a sin_n and_o with_o godliness_n brotherlie_a kindness_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v hear_v already_o that_o with_o our_o faith_n must_v be_v join_v virtue_n or_o godly_a deed_n which_o it_o can_v be_v without_o if_o it_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n with_o virtue_n we_o be_v command_v to_o join_v knowledge_n which_o may_v be_v a_o guide_n thereunto_o our_o knowledge_n must_v go_v with_o temperance_n with_o this_o must_v come_v patience_n and_o thereunto_o must_v be_v join_v godliness_n there_o remain_v yet_o two_o branch_n of_o these_o special_a virtue_n about_o which_o we_o be_v to_o travel_v the_o first_o of_o these_o be_v brotherlie_a love_n or_o kindness_n which_o must_v be_v yoke_v with_o godliness_n as_o i_o say_v that_o this_o godliness_n he_o speak_v of_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o law_n respect_v god_n and_o his_o religion_n that_o we_o be_v sound_a and_o zealous_a in_o the_o same_o and_o not_o as_o those_o which_o be_v for_o all_o all_o time_n and_o all_o religion_n and_o therefore_o care_v not_o what_o be_v say_v against_o religion_n be_v very_a bellie-god_n and_o atheist_n so_o this_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o second_o table_n show_v what_o we_o owe_v unto_o man_n this_o be_v very_o fit_o and_o necessary_o add_v for_o as_o there_o be_v many_o which_o regard_v man_n only_o how_o to_o please_v and_o not_o to_o grieve_v or_o offend_v they_o altogether_o forget_v their_o duty_n towards_o the_o lord_n god_n and_o whole_o shut_v he_o out_o as_o though_o their_o chief_a care_n shall_v be_v of_o man_n let_v pass_v godliness_n so_o there_o be_v some_o that_o offend_v on_o the_o other_o side_n which_o look_v always_o so_o high_a as_o to_o have_v respect_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n to_o be_v earnest_a and_o fiery_a in_o that_o overlook_v man_n forget_v the_o duty_n which_o they_o owe_v unto_o they_o the_o holy_a apostle_n meet_v with_o this_o mischief_n and_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o must_v so_o love_n god_n that_o we_o also_o love_v man_n join_v say_v he_o to_o your_o godliness_n brotherly_a kindness_n for_o unless_o this_o be_v join_v and_o go_v with_o our_o zeal_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v no_o true_a godliness_n although_o we_o be_v never_o so_o sound_a in_o judgement_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o hot_a as_o moses_n or_o elias_n yea_o even_o to_o be_v swallow_v up_o with_o burn_a zeal_n for_o it_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o god_n spirit_n who_o do_v also_o work_v the_o love_n towards_o man_n whersoever_o he_o go_v but_o it_o do_v proceed_v of_o some_o corrupt_a cause_n as_o of_o vain_a glory_n or_o self-love_n and_o such_o like_a and_o deserve_v not_o indeed_o to_o be_v call_v godly_a devotion_n no_o more_o than_o the_o true_a faith_n can_v be_v without_o virtue_n or_o deserve_v to_o be_v call_v aught_o save_o a_o shadow_n or_o image_n of_o faith_n if_o it_o be_v without_o good_a work_n but_o it_o be_v a_o bitterness_n which_o resemble_v the_o true_a zeal_n which_o do_v evermore_o carry_v with_o it_o a_o love_n and_o care_n towards_o man_n true_a it_o be_v that_o to_o be_v zealous_a in_o spirit_n be_v a_o singular_a and_o special_a gift_n of_o god_n &_o they_o which_o be_v without_o it_o be_v but_o brutish_a and_o senseless_a creature_n not_o know_v god_n nor_o how_o precious_a his_o glory_n be_v yet_o this_o must_v be_v look_v unto_o in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o whether_o we_o bear_v a_o love_a affection_n towards_o our_o brethren_n or_o no_o for_o if_o we_o love_v god_n we_o must_v needs_o love_v man_n which_o bear_v his_o image_n if_o we_o delight_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o be_v one_o chief_a point_n of_o doctrine_n that_o be_v teach_v in_o it_o that_o we_o be_v love_v &_o kind_a unto_o man_n therefore_o as_o s._n paul_n 1_o cor._n 13._o show_v that_o very_o excellent_a gift_n do_v not_o profit_v without_o love_n so_o likewise_o in_o this_o place_n we_o be_v teach_v that_o if_o we_o will_v seem_v to_o be_v godly_a and_o have_v not_o love_n it_o be_v nothing_o worth_a let_v every_o man_n therefore_o lay_v this_o doctrine_n to_o his_o heart_n that_o he_o must_v be_v earnest_a in_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o lord_n zealous_a in_o religion_n prefer_v god_n and_o his_o truth_n before_o all_o man_n whosoever_o and_o whatsoever_o they_o be_v but_o yet_o withal_o that_o he_o must_v look_v down_o unto_o man_n render_v must_v therefore_o seek_v a_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o we_o may_v take_v this_o difference_n either_o that_o the_o first_o of_o these_o do_v express_v what_o we_o owe_v towards_o the_o godly_a who_o be_v chief_o call_v the_o brethren_n and_o the_o latter_a what_o we_o owe_v unto_o all_o both_o good_a and_o bad_a or_o else_o the_o former_a do_v signify_v the_o inward_a affection_n of_o love_n and_o the_o

have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n which_o do_v witness_n with_o my_o spirit_n that_o i_o be_o the_o child_n of_o god_n i_o be_o regenerate_v i_o have_v the_o true_a repentance_n i_o be_o sanctify_v satan_n do_v tempt_v i_o strong_o many_o way_n but_o i_o be_o sure_a though_o he_o often_o as_o it_o be_v soil_n i_o and_o cause_v i_o to_o go_v awry_o that_o he_o shall_v never_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o i_o be_v not_o this_o a_o singular_a comfort_n to_o a_o man_n if_o any_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v lose_v he_o then_o where_o be_v the_o steadfastness_n of_o faith_n which_o saint_n peter_n here_o require_v in_o resist_v the_o devil_n if_o it_o come_v once_o to_o lie_v in_o ourselves_o we_o can_v be_v undoubted_o sure_a and_o steadfast_a we_o may_v well_o waner_n and_o doubt_n but_o when_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v write_v 1._o pet._n 1._o then_o have_v we_o a_o rock_n whereon_o to_o rest_v then_o do_v we_o stand_v steadfast_a arm_v with_o the_o power_n of_o god_n this_o faith_n may_v be_v try_v and_o seem_v oftentimes_o to_o be_v sore_o shake_v but_o it_o can_v never_o be_v overcome_v yea_o will_v some_o man_n say_v but_o every_o man_n can_v come_v to_o know_v that_o he_o have_v receive_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n or_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n we_o see_v many_o go_v far_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o think_v that_o they_o have_v the_o true_a faith_n and_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n which_o yet_o fall_v quite_o away_o it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v many_o which_o embrace_v the_o gospel_n and_o profess_v it_o with_o such_o feel_n that_o they_o suppose_v god_n have_v call_v they_o as_o his_o child_n there_o be_v for_o the_o time_n such_o a_o touch_n &_o such_o a_o move_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o in_o time_n they_o manifest_v themselves_o not_o to_o be_v of_o god_n one_o occasion_n or_o other_o drive_v they_o awry_o so_o that_o some_o of_o they_o become_v heretic_n some_o of_o they_o although_o they_o fall_v not_o into_o heresy_n yet_o they_o fall_v into_o vice_n and_o become_v so_o irreligious_a that_o all_o the_o former_a grace_n which_o they_o have_v taste_v of_o do_v vanish_v and_o be_v lose_v and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n we_o be_v will_v by_o saint_n peter_n to_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o see_v the_o reprobate_n receive_v a_o kind_n of_o faith_n and_o zeal_n which_o yet_o be_v not_o the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n we_o be_v will_v to_o be_v diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o see_v that_o we_o rest_v not_o in_o that_o faith_n we_o must_v labour_v to_o attain_v to_o that_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n we_o must_v seek_v to_o be_v confirm_v and_o even_o seal_v with_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o promise_n and_o so_o come_v to_o that_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n and_o hope_v which_o never_o confound_v and_o that_o be_v it_o which_o saint_n peter_n teach_v the_o way_n to_o come_v unto_o in_o the_o place_n before_o allege_v where_o he_o will_v we_o to_o join_v virtue_n with_o our_o faith_n with_o virtue_n knowledge_n etc._n etc._n for_o if_o we_o follow_v that_o rule_n which_o he_o there_o prescribe_v we_o shall_v be_v sure_a never_o to_o fall_v we_o shall_v then_o with_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n resist_v our_o adversary_n the_o devil_n and_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o he_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a importance_n i_o pray_v and_o beseech_v you_o as_o you_o tender_v the_o happy_a estate_n of_o your_o own_o soul_n and_o fulfil_v his_o lust_n now_o by_o faith_n in_o the_o gospel_n this_o image_n be_v restore_v and_o build_v up_o in_o we_o again_o while_o we_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n join_v with_o the_o same_o if_o man_n do_v know_v this_o first_o that_o all_o happiness_n in_o man_n be_v to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o to_o communicate_v with_o he_o and_o then_o that_o this_o be_v wrought_v only_o by_o the_o gospel_n man_n will_v not_o so_o lothsomelie_o despise_v it_o and_o prefer_v every_o light_a commodity_n &_o trifle_a pleasure_n before_o it_o man_n will_v not_o seek_v to_o disgrace_v and_o slander_v it_o man_n will_v not_o be_v so_o soon_o weary_a in_o hear_v of_o it_o nor_o think_v every_o hour_n ten_o while_o they_o be_v at_o it_o obtain_v cold_a love_n at_o their_o hand_n but_o there_o need_v somewhat_o to_o be_v say_v upon_o the_o phrase_n of_o speech_n which_o saint_n peter_n use_v for_o it_o be_v somewhat_o hard_a to_o some_o and_o as_o it_o be_v in_o old_a time_n foul_o abuse_v by_o heretic_n so_o be_v it_o wicked_o at_o this_o day_n pervert_v by_o the_o lovely_a family_n which_o hold_v this_o doctrine_n that_o man_n be_v deify_v and_o god_n be_v hominify_v as_o their_o language_n be_v mean_v that_o the_o very_a essence_n and_o substance_n of_o god_n be_v transfuse_v into_o man_n and_o his_o substance_n and_o they_o mingle_v together_o take_v great_a hold_n of_o this_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v we_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n but_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o every_o simple_a man_n may_v casilie_o confute_v they_o if_o we_o ask_v what_o the_o nature_n of_o a_o horse_n be_v will_v a_o man_n answer_v that_o he_o be_v make_v of_o the_o earth_n then_o a_o horse_n the_o divine_a nature_n in_o this_o place_n be_v nothing_o else_o mean_v but_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o a_o nature_n and_o such_o quality_n in_o man_n as_o may_v carry_v a_o resemblance_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o for_o example_n god_n be_v holy_a we_o must_v be_v holy_a he_o be_v pure_a good_a just_a gracious_a bountiful_a love_a and_o merciful_a all_o these_o and_o such_o like_a must_v be_v also_o in_o we_o we_o shall_v also_o come_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o life_n of_o glory_n of_o joy_n of_o happiness_n and_o eternity_n and_o so_o in_o a_o near_a sort_n to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n what_o be_v all_o those_o now_o the_o better_a which_o have_v so_o receive_v the_o precious_a promise_n that_o their_o quality_n be_v even_o as_o agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n as_o light_n be_v with_o darkness_n or_o heaven_n with_o hell_n or_o christ_n with_o beliall_n sith_o so_o many_o shameful_a and_o beastly_a sin_n flow_v &_o reign_v in_o they_o which_o be_v so_o many_o partakinge_n of_o the_o devilish_a nature_n let_v they_o for_o shame_n deny_v that_o they_o have_v aught_o wherein_o they_o communicate_v with_o god_n in_o any_o gospel_n who_o be_v they_o which_o have_v embrace_v the_o promise_n &_o have_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n the_o holy_a who_o be_v they_o who_o god_n have_v call_v to_o life_n eternal_a to_o be_v those_o who_o he_o love_v as_o child_n bear_v his_o image_n the_o pure_a and_o undefiled_a in_o the_o last_o clause_n of_o this_o verse_n he_o show_v his_o meaning_n very_o plain_o in_o that_o say_v he_o you_o flee_v the_o corruption_n which_o be_v in_o the_o world_n through_o lust_n this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n for_o as_o corruption_n and_o filthy_a defilinge_n the_o more_o they_o cleave_v unto_o we_o the_o more_o they_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o lord_n so_o contrariwise_o the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v fly_v and_o eschew_v they_o so_o much_o the_o near_o he_o do_v approach_v unto_o god_n who_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o purity_n we_o be_v here_o to_o note_v that_o saint_n peter_n make_v all_o corruption_n and_o commit_v in_o the_o world_n either_o in_o thought_n word_n or_o deed_n to_o be_v short_a this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o ten_o commandment_n when_o he_o say_v thou_o shall_v not_o covet_v at_o least_o so_o much_o of_o it_o be_v forbid_v there_o as_o pertain_v to_o the_o second_o table_n that_o be_v the_o root_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o evil_a against_o man_n for_o there_o understand_v this_o more_o plain_o first_o i_o say_v it_o be_v out_o of_o ourselves_o or_o from_o within_o ourselves_o because_o we_o must_v take_v the_o trial_n whether_o those_o thing_n be_v in_o we_o which_o be_v give_v to_o all_o those_o who_o god_n do_v choose_v than_o i_o say_v it_o be_v not_o of_o ourselves_o for_o if_o it_o be_v it_o shall_v be_v altogether_o uncertain_a but_o of_o the_o seal_n of_o god_n wherewith_o he_o have_v seal_v we_o which_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n now_o mark_v well_o i_o pray_v you_o if_o you_o do_v say_v s._n peter_n these_o thing_n you_o himself_o sing_v this_o doleful_a song_n i_o know_v not_o whether_o i_o shall_v be_v save_v or_o not_o and_o look_v how_o the_o other_o may_v say_v i_o know_v i_o shall_v be_v save_v because_o god_n have_v seal_v i_o with_o his_o spirit_n so_o may_v this_o say_v i_o be_o sure_a to_o be_v damn_v continue_v in_o this_o case_n because_o i_o have_v not_o faith_n but_o only_o a_o waver_a &_o doubtful_a opinion_n we_o may_v see_v by_o this_o how_o beneficial_a they_o be_v and_o merciful_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n which_o with_o all_o their_o power_n day_n and_o night_n give_v up_o themselves_o to_o seek_v after_o the_o knowledge_n and_o obedience_n of_o the_o lord_n will_v for_o not_o give_v over_o nor_o wax_a weary_a they_o shall_v in_o continuance_n of_o time_n if_o they_o ply_v it_o hard_o find_v such_o a_o blessing_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o increase_n of_o faith_n and_o virtue_n that_o will_v cause_v they_o to_o say_v we_o have_v not_o lose_v our_o labour_n on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o may_v see_v how_o unkind_a and_o cruel_a they_o be_v to_o themselves_o which_o through_o idleness_n and_o sloth_n in_o seek_v after_o god_n with_o their_o daily_a and_o continual_a sin_n do_v even_o as_o it_o be_v cut_v the_o throat_n of_o their_o faith_n see_v they_o can_v not_o have_v trust_n in_o he_o who_o they_o do_v so_o much_o disobey_v this_o place_n be_v as_o a_o mighty_a engine_n to_o overthrow_v the_o vanity_n of_o sundry_a opinion_n which_o do_v reign_v in_o man_n as_o first_o of_o all_o in_o those_o which_o cry_v out_o against_o this_o doctrine_n as_o a_o thing_n which_o will_v make_v man_n careless_a and_o idle_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o stop_v the_o course_n of_o good_a work_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v how_o well_o these_o great_a wise_a man_n have_v profit_v in_o god_n school_n see_v how_o they_o agree_v with_o the_o holy_a apostle_n he_o say_v we_o be_v to_o give_v all_o our_o study_n &_o diligence_n in_o good_a work_n to_o come_v to_o the_o sure_a and_o undoubted_a knowledge_n that_o we_o be_v choose_v unto_o life_n they_o say_v quite_o contrary_a if_o you_o will_v have_v man_n careful_a of_o well_o do_v away_o with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o election_n for_o it_o will_v mar_v all_o thus_o the_o wisdom_n of_o flesh_n do_v proud_o lift_v up_o itself_o even_o against_o god_n but_o how_o foolish_o a_o very_a child_n may_v see_v do_v that_o thing_n which_o we_o can_v not_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o without_o exceed_a care_n of_o godliness_n abundance_n of_o virtue_n and_o plenty_n of_o all_o good_a work_n destroy_v in_o man_n the_o study_n and_o care_n of_o good_a work_n but_o proud_a flesh_n be_v worthy_o blind_a some_o other_o although_o not_o thus_o brutish_o blind_v yet_o great_o oversee_v when_o they_o think_v on_o this_o doctrine_n which_o be_v set_v up_o unto_o we_o as_o the_o mark_n for_o we_o to_o aim_v at_o in_o all_o our_o do_n and_o the_o trial_n whether_o we_o have_v do_v well_o or_o not_o i_o mean_v the_o trial_n in_o this_o respect_n and_o when_o a_o man_n have_v do_v many_o good_a deed_n he_o shall_v know_v he_o have_v not_o do_v they_o well_o if_o he_o yet_o doubt_v whether_o he_o be_v one_o of_o god_n choose_v for_o howsoever_o he_o pass_v it_o over_o yet_o his_o conscience_n which_o do_v in_o some_o sort_n know_v that_o he_o have_v not_o deal_v but_o for_o vainglory_n or_o some_o other_o sinister_a respect_n will_v not_o suffer_v he_o to_o have_v this_o faith_n for_o god_n do_v not_o work_v so_o dark_o by_o his_o spirit_n in_o man_n but_o that_o they_o may_v learn_v to_o know_v whether_o it_o be_v of_o he_o if_o they_o will_v make_v a_o due_a trial_n because_o we_o must_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o outward_a do_v of_o good_a thing_n but_o in_o the_o right_n do_v let_v he_o therefore_o which_o give_v himself_o to_o do_v good_a work_n and_o yet_o feel_v not_o this_o which_o s._n peter_n say_v we_o shall_v suspect_v that_o his_o do_n be_v misshapen_v and_o be_v careful_a to_o fashion_v they_o after_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n a_o three_o sort_n of_o man_n there_o be_v which_o with_o might_n and_o main_n will_v defend_v this_o doctrine_n that_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v sure_a of_o salvation_n that_o we_o can_v not_o more_o honour_n god_n then_o to_o give_v full_a credit_n
to_o his_o promise_n and_o because_o the_o plain_a testimony_n of_o the_o scripture_n compel_v they_o they_o affirm_v it_o constant_o and_o condemn_v the_o contrary_a as_o a_o soul_n error_n that_o god_n have_v choose_v man_n and_o man_n come_v to_o feel_v and_o to_o know_v this_o and_o therefore_o because_o it_o be_v a_o true_a doctrine_n they_o say_v also_o that_o they_o themselves_o be_v sure_a that_o god_n have_v choose_v they_o but_o when_o they_o take_v not_o the_o way_n to_o become_v sure_a which_o s._n peter_n have_v here_o set_v down_o but_o go_v in_o a_o contrary_a path_n and_o be_v spot_v with_o filthy_a crime_n we_o may_v bold_o say_v they_o be_v liar_n for_o although_o they_o brag_v with_o their_o tongue_n of_o that_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o bird_n in_o their_o breast_n which_o do_v sing_v in_o a_o contrary_a note_n &_o tell_v they_o plain_o what_o they_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o man_n there_o be_v which_o in_o no_o case_n can_v be_v persuade_v that_o any_o man_n can_v be_v sure_a of_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o with_o scoff_n they_o ask_v of_o they_o which_o profess_v the_o word_n when_o god_n tell_v they_o so_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v or_o can_v not_o be_v know_v than_o the_o apostle_n have_v great_o overshoot_v himself_o in_o tell_v we_o how_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v sure_a but_o ask_v a_o question_n of_o they_o whether_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o god_n every_o one_o will_v answer_v i_o put_v all_o my_o whole_a trust_n in_o he_o reason_n then_o a_o little_a further_o and_o tell_v they_o that_o the_o scripture_n which_o can_v not_o lie_v say_v that_o all_o which_o trust_v in_o god_n shall_v be_v save_v how_o then_o will_v they_o join_v these_o together_o that_o they_o trust_v in_o god_n and_o yet_o doubt_v whether_o they_o shall_v be_v save_v can_v god_n deceive_v or_o say_v they_o they_o know_v not_o what_o undoubted_o if_o they_o do_v know_v that_o they_o have_v trust_v they_o shall_v also_o know_v they_o can_v not_o perish_v but_o let_v we_o learn_v by_o this_o the_o misery_n of_o our_o time_n in_o which_o man_n do_v still_o think_v this_o doctrine_n to_o be_v strange_a now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o particular_a application_n of_o this_o doctrine_n in_o which_o every_o one_o must_v come_v home_o to_o himself_o remember_v first_o that_o such_o as_o god_n have_v call_v home_o to_o himself_o and_o choose_v to_o be_v his_o child_n he_o do_v also_o give_v unto_o they_o true_a faith_n and_o feeling_n that_o they_o be_v his_o elect_a and_o such_o as_o perceive_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o themselves_o be_v in_o a_o very_a miserable_a case_n and_o as_o yet_o we_o may_v say_v forlorn_a creature_n therefore_o every_o man_n in_o himself_o must_v ask_v this_o question_n of_o his_o own_o soul_n how_o go_v the_o matter_n with_o thou_o be_v thou_o sure_a god_n have_v choose_v thou_o do_v thou_o feel_v any_o assurance_n of_o eternal_a life_n the_o conscience_n will_v answer_v upright_o if_o we_o be_v not_o negligent_a to_o make_v inquiry_n then_o if_o we_o find_v this_o within_o i_o be_o not_o sure_a for_o i_o doubt_v and_o stagger_v we_o his_o apostle_n thou_o may_v come_v to_o this_o assurance_n and_o point_v he_o out_o the_o way_n even_o that_o which_o you_o have_v hear_v wherein_o he_o must_v painful_o travel_v and_o go_v forward_o not_o for_o a_o gird_n or_o a_o braid_v and_o wax_v idle_a again_o but_o still_o labour_n for_o these_o man_n have_v go_v a_o great_a way_n and_o yet_o they_o be_v will_v to_o proceed_v still_o if_o contrariety_n in_o the_o matter_n itself_o which_o they_o teach_v yet_o the_o diversity_n of_o the_o scholar_n which_o they_o light_v upon_o &_o the_o contrary_a affection_n of_o those_o who_o they_o instruct_v cause_v they_o to_o use_v a_o diverse_a and_o contrary_a order_n of_o teach_v saint_n paul_n have_v to_o deal_v with_o such_o as_o will_v seek_v to_o be_v justify_v partly_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o partly_o by_o their_o own_o deed_n or_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n use_v this_o order_n first_o show_v that_o we_o be_v lose_v and_o condemn_v in_o ourselves_o then_o next_o have_v but_o a_o dead_a faith_n which_o in_o no_o respect_n be_v able_a for_o to_o help_v or_o save_v they_o a_o second_o cause_n why_o they_o seem_v so_o much_o to_o differ_v be_v herein_o that_o man_n do_v not_o mark_v well_o how_o they_o handle_v not_o the_o self_n same_o matter_n nor_o have_v not_o the_o same_o drift_n for_o saint_n paul_n labour_v to_o prove_v that_o the_o true_a faith_n do_v join_v we_o to_o christ_n and_o thereby_o save_o us._n saint_n james_n here_o beat_v upon_o this_o point_n that_o the_o dead_a faith_n which_o be_v but_o a_o bare_a image_n of_o the_o right_a can_v do_v nothing_o to_o save_v us._n this_o be_v a_o most_o plain_a and_o forcible_a reason_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a gospeller_n be_v but_o a_o dead_a
