and_o itch_a ear_n after_o novelty_n will_v not_o long_o like_o the_o same_o thing_n but_o as_o the_o israelite_n at_o the_o first_o like_v their_o manna_n because_o it_o be_v a_o strange_a kind_n of_o meat_n but_o afterward_o loathe_v it_o when_o they_o have_v be_v a_o while_n feed_v with_o it_o so_o these_o man_n at_o the_o first_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o strangeness_n of_o the_o doctrine_n may_v admire_v it_o receive_v it_o with_o joy_n and_o profess_v the_o faith_n thereof_o and_o yet_o afterward_o wax_v weary_a of_o it_o 2._o it_o often_o arise_v from_o pride_n and_o vainglory_n because_o other_o do_v condemn_v the_o enemy_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o do_v like_a and_o love_v honour_n and_o commend_v those_o that_o believe_v it_o &_o profess_v it_o &_o live_v according_o they_o to_o get_v credit_n &_o honour_n among_o man_n will_v profess_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n &_o submit_v themselves_o to_o his_o holy_a gospel_n even_o as_o the_o pharisy_n 6_o do_v fast_o and_o pray_v and_o give_v alm_n to_o be_v 〈◊〉_d see_v and_o praise_v of_o man_n these_o person_n as_o bernard_n say_v desire_v knowledge_n that_o themselves_o may_v be_v know_v and_o this_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o apostle_n be_v these_o man_n will_v renounce_v their_o faith_n 3._o it_o often_o proceed_v from_o covetousness_n for_o the_o get_n and_o keep_v of_o wealth_n and_o riches_n that_o they_o may_v climb_v up_o to_o high_a
preferment_n in_o the_o world_n as_o appear_v in_o those_o who_o seek_v out_o christ_n and_o follow_v he_o from_o place_n to_o place_n not_o so_o much_o for_o the_o miracle_n which_o they_o have_v see_v and_o doctrine_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v as_o for_o the_o loaf_n 26._o whereof_o they_o have_v eat_v and_o wherewith_o ibid._n they_o be_v fill_v there_o be_v other_o say_v bernard_n who_o deserve_v knowledge_n that_o they_o may_v sell_v it_o for_o money_n for_o honour_n and_o this_o be_v filthy_a lucre_n there_o be_v other_o two_o end_n whercat_n some_o do_v aim_n for_o some_o desire_n withdraw_v so_o these_o man_n faith_n will_v fail_v if_o the_o gospel_n bring_v no_o gain_n but_o loss_n and_o see_v those_o temporize_a professor_n have_v these_o cause_n propound_v to_o themselves_o in_o hear_v and_o receive_v the_o word_n in_o believe_v and_o profess_v it_o with_o joy_n their_o faith_n can_v be_v sincere_a for_o nothing_o be_v sincere_o do_v unless_o it_o be_v do_v for_o god_n glory_n and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o sincere_a it_o can_v be_v sound_a and_o firm_a and_o both_o way_n it_o differ_v from_o justify_v faith_n for_o as_o it_o do_v all_o thing_n of_o sincerity_n for_o god_n himself_o for_o christ_n himself_o for_o the_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a benefit_n of_o christ_n as_o far_o as_o humane_a infirmity_n will_v permit_v so_o be_v it_o firm_a and_o constant_a be_v build_v on_o such_o ground_n as_o will_v not_o shrink_v do_v not_o therefore_o content_v yourselves_o with_o this_o temporary_a faith_n but_o seek_v for_o â—hat_n which_o will_v abide_v for_o ever_o as_o well_o in_o persecution_n as_o in_o peace_n as_o well_o in_o time_n of_o tentation_n as_o out_o of_o tentation_n for_o if_o your_o faith_n fail_v satan_n will_v prevail_v 42._o against_o and_o be_v say_v to_o tempt_v us._n and_o his_o suggestion_n and_o practice_n against_o we_o be_v call_v tentation_n the_o corporal_a and_o outward_a tentation_n be_v from_o man_n who_o do_v afflict_v try_v what_o man_n be_v whether_o dissemble_a hypocrite_n or_o sincere_a christian_n whether_o their_o faith_n be_v feign_v or_o unfeigned_a waver_v or_o steadfast_a little_a or_o great_a and_o of_o this_o tentation_n must_v this_o place_n 17._o be_v understand_v for_o in_o matthew_n and_o mark_v it_o be_v call_v tribulation_n and_o persecution_n for_o the_o word_n christ_n foresee_v that_o the_o hearer_n and_o professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n shall_v afterward_o be_v gracious_o persecute_v he_o therefore_o foretell_v what_o it_o shall_v work_v in_o this_o kind_n of_o hearer_n it_o will_v cause_v they_o to_o revolt_v for_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o it_o be_v say_v in_o matthew_n and_o mark_v they_o be_v offend_v and_o that_o by_o and_o by_o and_o immediate_o but_o here_o they_o go_v away_o they_o depart_v will_v not_o stand_v to_o it_o as_o man_n of_o courage_n but_o shrink_v and_o fall_v away_o and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v by_o reason_n of_o their_o own_o hardness_n as_o this_o parable_n declare_v for_o as_o stony_a ground_n mingle_v with_o some_o earth_n be_v common_o hot_a and_o will_v cause_v the_o corn_n cast_v into_o they_o to_o sprout_v and_o come_v up_o very_o speedy_o but_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o root_n to_o go_v any_o reasonable_a depth_n into_o the_o earth_n there_o to_o be_v feed_v with_o moisture_n therefore_o in_o the_o dry_a season_n of_o summer_n the_o blade_n of_o the_o corn_n will_v wither_v together_o with_o the_o root_n so_o these_o man_n though_o they_o have_v some_o good_a motion_n and_o affection_n in_o their_o heart_n &_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o chearefulnes_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v very_o forward_o for_o a_o time_n yet_o in_o time_n of_o persecution_n all_o their_o goodness_n will_v be_v dry_v up_o they_o will_v loose_v their_o first_o love_n to_o the_o word_n and_o fall_v from_o their_o former_a profession_n they_o never_o do_v cleave_v to_o christ_n with_o their_o whole_a heart_n and_o therefore_o be_v more_o easy_o draw_v away_o man_n may_v fall_v away_o from_o faith_n either_o by_o error_n and_o heresy_n or_o by_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n by_o error_n and_o heresy_n as_o do_v hymeneus_n and_o alexander_n who_o make_v shipwreck_n 19_o of_o faith_n as_o do_v hymencus_fw-la and_o phyletus_n who_o err_v concern_v the_o truth_n say_v that_o the_o resurrection_n be_v already_o 18._o past_a and_o do_v destroy_v the_o faith_n of_o many_o as_o do_v nicholas_n who_o for_o his_o profession_n be_v choose_v for_o a_o deacon_n yet_o afterward_o become_v a_o archhereticke_n 1._o first_o founder_n of_o the_o heresy_n of_o the_o niâ—â—laitanes_n and_o as_o those_o do_v of_o who_o saint_n paul_n prophesy_v that_o in_o the_o late_a time_n man_n shall_v depart_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o give_v heed_n unto_o spirit_n of_o error_n and_o doctrine_n of_o devil_n and_o as_o those_o that_o in_o former_a age_n fall_v from_o the_o truth_n to_o the_o heresy_n of_o arrius_n pelagius_n nestorius_n and_o other_o damnable_a heretic_n and_o as_o those_o that_o in_o the_o day_n of_o queen_n mary_n do_v fall_v from_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n former_o profess_v to_o the_o error_n and_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n again_o man_n may_v fall_v away_o by_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n in_o their_o life_n as_o those_o who_o put_v away_o a_o good_a conscience_n as_o those_o who_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n but_o end_n in_o the_o flesh_n as_o those_o who_o turn_v back_o after_o satan_n as_o those_o who_o have_v escape_v from_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o world_n 20._o through_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n
so_o shall_v you_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v they_o for_o ever_o wherefore_o be_v careful_a to_o use_v these_o mean_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o people_n hear_v much_o and_o keep_v little_a but_o be_v like_a to_o bottomless_a barrel_n which_o let_v water_n run_v out_o as_o fast_o as_o it_o be_v pour_v in_o that_o of_o all_o the_o sermon_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v in_o their_o whole_a life_n time_n they_o have_v scarce_o the_o abridgement_n of_o one_o leave_v in_o their_o heart_n or_o head_n for_o their_o direction_n and_o consolation_n but_o even_o because_o they_o have_v neglect_v these_o mean_n use_v they_o hereafter_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v how_o well_o they_o will_v make_v you_o able_a to_o keep_v that_o which_o you_o hear_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n the_o three_o and_o last_o property_n in_o these_o hearer_n be_v this_o they_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o this_o be_v another_o special_a difference_n betwixt_o they_o and_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o rest_n either_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n at_o all_o as_o the_o first_o sort_n or_o but_o for_o a_o time_n as_o the_o second_o or_o imperfect_a fruit_n and_o in_o some_o thing_n only_o as_o the_o three_o but_o these_o bring_v forth_o not_o for_o a_o while_n but_o continual_o not_o in_o some_o thing_n only_o but_o in_o all_o and_o that_o type_n and_o perfect_a fruit_n if_o good_a seed_n be_v sow_v in_o good_a ground_n it_o usual_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n for_o the_o use_n of_o they_o which_o owe_v it_o and_o sow_v it_o so_o if_o some_o doctrine_n be_v preach_v and_o people_n hear_v it_o with_o good_a heart_n it_o will_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o their_o life_n these_o fruit_n be_v bring_v forth_o not_o by_o profession_n but_o by_o practice_n and_o do_v consist_v not_o so_o much_o in_o word_n as_o in_o deed_n and_o therefore_o paul_n pray_v that_o the_o philippian_n may_v be_v fill_v with_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o that_o the_o colossian_n may_v please_v god_n in_o all_o 11_o thing_n be_v fruitful_a in_o all_o good_a work_n and_o he_o say_v of_o the_o roman_n that_o they_o 10._o be_v free_v from_o sin_n and_o make_v seruaant_n unto_o god_n have_v their_o fruit_n in_o holiness_n so_o that_o this_o fruit_n can_v 22._o be_v understand_v of_o the_o reward_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o heaven_n but_o of_o the_o obedience_n which_o they_o perform_v on_o earth_n for_o that_o be_v a_o fruit_n which_o they_o receyve_v this_o be_v a_o fruit_n which_o they_o bring_v forth_o that_o they_o receive_v from_o god_n this_o they_o yield_v unto_o god_n that_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o glory_n this_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o grace_n see_v then_o the_o disposition_n of_o these_o good_a hearer_n they_o do_v not_o only_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o their_o ear_n and_o understand_v it_o with_o their_o mind_n and_o keep_v it_o in_o their_o heart_n but_o they_o do_v also_o practice_v it_o in_o their_o life_n this_o be_v the_o chief_a end_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n therefore_o do_v they_o hear_v it_o and_o learn_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v order_v their_o life_n by_o it_o and_o practice_v it_o when_o occasion_n be_v offer_v happy_a be_v all_o those_o which_o thus_o hear_v for_o as_o james_n say_v who_o so_o look_v into_o 25_o the_o perfect_a law_n of_o liberty_n and_o continue_v therein_o he_o not_o be_v a_o forgetful_a hearer_n but_o a_o doer_n of_o the_o work_n shall_v be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v have_v your_o hear_n to_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o comfortable_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n let_v it_o end_v in_o obedience_n ground_n that_o be_v sow_v with_o good_a seed_n though_o it_o shoot_v forth_o a_o broad_a and_o rank_a blade_n will_v not_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n of_o obedience_n in_o your_o life_n all_o the_o knowledge_n and_o learning_n that_o man_n can_v possible_o have_v in_o any_o art_n or_o science_n be_v nothing_o worth_a without_o practice_n and_o can_v you_o think_v that_o your_o knowledge_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n will_v profit_v you_o any_o whit_n without_o practice_n and_o indeed_o we_o learn_v no_o more_o than_o we_o practise_v as_o that_o pambo_n acknowledge_v who_o hear_v the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o 39_o psalm_n i_o say_v i_o will_v take_v heed_n to_o my_o 18._o way_n lest_o i_o offend_v with_o my_o tongue_n confess_v that_o he_o have_v not_o learn_v it_o in_o many_o year_n because_o he_o have_v not_o in_o many_o year_n attain_v to_o the_o right_a practice_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v be_v careful_a to_o bring_v forth_o these_o fruit_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o first_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n because_o they_o serve_v for_o his_o glory_n therefore_o say_v de_fw-fr christ_n to_o his_o disciple_n herein_o be_v 8._o my_o fathet_z glorify_v that_o you_o bear_v much_o fruit_n and_o therefore_o paul_n pray_v that_o the_o be_v not_o the_o fruit_n here_o speak_v of_o the_o lord_n may_v say_v to_o they_o that_o bring_v forth_o such_o fruit_n who_o require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n these_o thing_n as_o the_o
