desperate_a evil_n it_o aggravate_v the_o pride_n of_o man_n with_o what_o indignation_n shall_v god_n look_v upon_o a_o wretched_a worm_n that_o shall_v be_v proud_a when_o his_o own_o son_n be_v so_o lowly_a bernard_n in_o a_o sermon_n of_o he_o upon_o the_o nativity_n of_o christ_n say_v what_o more_o unworthy_a what_o more_o despicable_a what_o more_o vile_a to_o be_v punish_v then_o this_o only_o now_o we_o see_v in_o christ_n example_n that_o nobleness_n and_o braveness_n of_o spirit_n and_o yet_o lowliness_n of_o heart_n may_v stand_v together_o i_o confess_v this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o yet_o those_o that_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n do_v understand_v this_o four_o and_o further_o in_o this_o example_n of_o low_a as_o i_o be_v in_o some_o little_a thing_n but_o for_o the_o great_a thing_n wherein_o i_o be_v make_v low_a i_o will_v never_o put_v you_o to_o this_o now_o there_o be_v a_o great_a strength_n of_o argument_n in_o this_o when_o as_o christ_n propound_v to_o we_o his_o example_n that_o in_o that_o example_n he_o do_v not_o require_v we_o shall_v be_v so_o low_a as_o he_o be_v chap._n cxxii_o the_o ground_n of_o humility_n a_o knowledge_n and_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o vileness_n well_o then_o have_v show_v the_o lowliness_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o force_n of_o his_o example_n let_v we_o too_o too_o ready_a to_o know_v their_o own_o excellency_n we_o use_v to_o say_v of_o a_o man_n â—uch_v a_o one_o have_v excellent_a part_n and_o he_o know_n it_o himself_o but_o the_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o that_o way_n may_v puff_n up_o but_o this_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o to_o know_v our_o own_o meanness_n and_o vileness_n and_o wretchedness_n this_o be_v that_o that_o humble_v we_o and_o so_o a_o humble_a heart_n make_v that_o to_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o his_o behaviour_n according_a to_o what_o he_o shall_v have_v make_v know_v to_o he_o of_o his_o own_o meanness_n and_o of_o low_a estate_n you_o must_v be_v affable_a in_o your_o carriage_n to_o man_n and_o woman_n you_o must_v not_o scorn_v not_o look_v with_o disdain_n upon_o any_o though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o much_o under_o you_o have_v god_n place_v you_o above_o they_o give_v you_o a_o high_a place_n in_o estate_n give_v you_o more_o riches_n better_a part_n better_a employment_n than_o they_o have_v yet_o you_o must_v condescend_v to_o the_o low_a and_o think_v with_o yourselves_o who_o have_v make_v the_o difference_n i_o may_v have_v be_v as_o low_a in_o condition_n and_o part_n as_o they_o than_o other_o and_o better_a estate_n than_o other_o and_o better_a part_n than_o other_o alas_o if_o thou_o have_v wit_n and_o understanding_n let_v god_n but_o touch_v thy_o brain_n a_o little_a with_o a_o few_o humour_n with_o a_o little_a too_o much_o heat_n or_o cold_a or_o moisture_n or_o draw_v a_o few_o ill_a vapour_n out_o of_o thy_o stomach_n
live_v among_o but_o now_o because_o in_o some_o thing_n thou_o be_v bind_v up_o have_v a_o tender_a conscience_n that_o you_o must_v go_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n the_o excellency_n of_o this_o grace_n of_o humilty_n learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n this_o grace_n be_v above_o all_o grace_n next_o to_o faith_n itself_o and_o mighty_o extol_v in_o scripture_n and_o it_o be_v proper_a indeed_o to_o christianity_n if_o you_o read_v in_o philosopher_n that_o speak_v of_o moral_a virtue_n you_o shall_v find_v high_a commendation_n of_o justice_n virtue_n and_o the_o like_a and_o little_a or_o nothing_o say_v of_o humility_n no_o it_o be_v the_o christian_n that_o count_v humility_n to_o have_v a_o excellency_n in_o it_o it_o be_v christ_n that_o be_v come_v from_o the_o bosom_n of_o his_o father_n into_o the_o world_n to_o be_v a_o example_n and_o a_o pattern_n to_o hold_v forth_o the_o excellency_n and_o glory_n of_o this_o grace_n before_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v one_o reason_n why_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n namely_o to_o hold_v forth_o the_o glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o his_o grace_n humility_n may_v say_v but_o little_a of_o its_o own_o praise_n god_n take_v care_n for_o the_o glory_n of_o it_o it_o will_v discover_v itself_o by_o the_o fragrancy_n of_o itself_o as_o violet_n discover_v themselves_o by_o the_o sweetness_n of_o they_o though_o they_o be_v cover_v with_o leave_n so_o the_o excellency_n of_o humility_n will_v discover_v itself_o by_o its_o sweetness_n and_o no_o man_n or_o woman_n needs_o to_o take_v care_n for_o the_o discovery_n of_o its_o excellency_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v abundant_a folly_n for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o be_v proud_a of_o their_o humility_n or_o to_o show_v themselves_o humble_a that_o other_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o it_o and_o so_o commend_v they_o for_o it_o but_o true_a humility_n show_v forth_o itself_o and_o it_o must_v not_o be_v force_v but_o let_v it_o alone_o and_o let_v it_o appear_v in_o itself_o in_o a_o genuine_a way_n and_o 16._o 19_o see_v what_o the_o testimony_n of_o god_n be_v of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n better_o it_o be_v to_o be_v of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n with_o the_o lowly_a than_o to_o divide_v the_o spoil_n covenant_n you_o will_v say_v that_o be_v somewhat_o it_o be_v true_a god_n will_v require_v somewhat_o of_o man_n in_o the_o covenant_n i_o but_o yet_o in_o that_o manner_n as_o man_n be_v as_o much_o debase_v as_o possible_o can_v be_v for_o the_o condition_n be_v so_o as_o man_n must_v be_v empty_v of_o all_o be_v nothing_o in_o himself_o he_o must_v go_v whole_o out_o of_o himself_o for_o upon_o he_o still_o upon_o the_o life_n that_o be_v in_o he_o so_o that_o man_n be_v the_o most_o empty_v and_o debase_v in_o that_o way_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o save_v he_o by_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o in_o the_o great_a manner_n that_o a_o creature_n can_v be_v put_v to_o we_o think_v this_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o self_n denial_n for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v mean_a in_o the_o world_n and_o to_o suffer_v much_o in_o the_o world_n for_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o self_n denial_n i_o confess_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n go_v to_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v the_o great_a self_n denial_n of_o all_o for_o there_o a_o man_n do_v not_o only_o deny_v his_o outward_a comfort_n here_o for_o the_o present_a but_o he_o deny_v his_o own_o righteousness_n his_o own_o ability_n his_o own_o gift_n yea_o and_o afterward_o when_o he_o come_v to_o have_v grace_n he_o deny_v they_o too_o and_o whole_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o for_o justification_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o all_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v excellent_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n he_o do_v look_v upon_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n in_o comparison_n of_o what_o he_o find_v in_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o faith_n be_v that_o that_o carry_v with_o it_o as_o great_a a_o self_n denial_n as_o we_o can_v conceive_v a_o creature_n be_v capable_a of_o in_o this_o world_n faith_n make_v one_o like_o christ_n in_o that_o respect_n christ_n though_o he_o be_v glorious_a yet_o he_o do_v empty_v another_o in_o habakkuck_n 2._o 4._o behold_v his_o soul_n which_o be_v lift_v up_o be_v not_o upright_o in_o he_o but_o the_o just_a shall_v live_v by_o his_o faith_n this_o text_n will_v serve_v both_o for_o this_o i_o now_o bring_v it_o for_o and_o to_o confirm_v another_o thing_n that_o i_o speak_v of_o even_o now_o that_o be_v how_o humility_n preserve_v grace_n and_o keep_v man_n and_o woman_n from_o be_v apostate_n it_o be_v apparent_a here_o say_v he_o behold_v his_o soul_n which_o be_v lift_v up_o be_v not_o upright_o in_o time_n of_o trouble_n he_o will_v fall_v off_o but_o so_o long_o under_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n because_o god_n will_v be_v weaken_v the_o pride_n of_o their_o heart_n you_o think_v that_o a_o poor_a soul_n that_o have_v horror_n and_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n have_v little_a pride_n in_o he_o one_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o despair_v and_o to_o conclude_v of_o itself_o that_o it_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n be_v that_o soul_n proud_a certain_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pride_n in_o it_o then_o you_o will_v say_v how_o will_v that_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v pride_n because_o it_o will_v fain_o find_v somewhat_o in_o itself_o to_o present_v unto_o god_n for_o its_o mercy_n though_o it_o do_v not_o think_v to_o merit_v yet_o it_o will_v present_v something_o to_o god_n for_o its_o mercy_n and_o here_o be_v pride_n the_o work_n of_o his_o spirit_n though_o not_o by_o god_n sanctify_a grace_n though_o there_o be_v not_o a_o sanctify_a principle_n put_v into_o the_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v that_o that_o be_v very_o like_o it_o and_o it_o be_v that_o whereby_o the_o soul_n do_v act_n by_o as_o it_o do_v when_o a_o principle_n of_o sanctification_n be_v put_v into_o it_o but_o this_o grace_n be_v very_o useful_a for_o that_o be_v one_o special_a aim_n that_o god_n have_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n though_o he_o will_v glorify_v his_o creature_n yet_o he_o will_v debase_v it_o in_o such_o a_o way_n that_o the_o creature_n shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o boast_v of_o what_o shall_v we_o boast_v of_o say_v paul_n if_o it_o be_v of_o work_n than_o we_o may_v boast_v but_o because_o it_o be_v of_o faith_n we_o have_v nothing_o to_o boast_v of_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o humility_n chap._n cxxx_o humility_n bring_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n in_o eight_o particular_n 1._o it_o venture_v upon_o nothing_o before_o it_o see_v god_n call_v 2._o the_o head_n of_o such_o be_v low_a than_o their_o condition_n 3._o he_o be_v never_o disappoint_v in_o the_o world_n 4._o he_o will_v have_v god_n have_v his_o glory_n 5._o it_o free_v from_o opposition_n oâ—_n make_v the_o heart_n yield_v to_o it_o 6._o it_o make_v the_o heart_n rejoice_v in_o the_o property_n of_o other_o 7._o it_o be_v under_o many_o promise_n 8._o all_o cross_n be_v small_a to_o a_o humble_a heart_n but_o now_o we_o come_v to_o open_v the_o promise_n and_o then_o we_o will_v apply_v altogether_o the_o promise_n here_o make_v to_o those_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v now_o i_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o open_v the_o rest_n that_o a_o christian_n heart_n have_v that_o come_v to_o christ_n that_o have_v be_v do_v at_o large_a in_o the_o former_a verse_n come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v therefore_o here_o i_o shall_v only_o show_v how_o humility_n and_o lowliness_n of_o heart_n give_v rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o great_a correspondency_n between_o those_o two_o grace_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v speak_v the_o less_o now_o of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o humility_n because_o there_o be_v a_o great_a affinity_n between_o this_o and_o meekness_n now_o one_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n must_v needs_o live_v at_o rest_n first_o because_o such_o a_o one_o dare_v not_o venture_v upon_o any_o thing_n before_o he_o see_v god_n call_v a_o bold_a spirit_n will_v venture_v upon_o any_o thing_n when_o he_o have_v not_o god_n call_v and_o there_o he_o meet_v with_o trouble_n but_o now_o a_o lowly_a spirit_n think_v thus_o be_v this_o god_n way_n have_v i_o a_o word_n for_o it_o and_o a_o call_v for_o it_o if_o i_o have_v let_v i_o go_v on_o whatever_o come_v of_o it_o if_o he_o meet_v with_o trouble_n in_o such_o a_o business_n if_o he_o can_v say_v i_o undertake_v it_o thus_o i_o have_v god_n call_v what_o abundance_n of_o rest_n have_v he_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v disquiet_v in_o the_o world_n and_o trouble_v it_o be_v because_o they_o rush_v upon_o thing_n without_o god_n call_v when_o the_o soul_n can_v appeal_v to_o god_n lord_n i_o will_v not_o undertake_v such_o a_o thing_n nor_o such_o a_o thing_n though_o i_o say_v there_o may_v be_v some_o preferment_n by_o it_o and_o somewhat_o get_v by_o it_o yet_o lord_n thou_o see_v the_o uprightness_n of_o my_o heart_n that_o i_o will_v not_o venture_v upon_o it_o without_o thy_o call_v and_o then_o when_o i_o see_v that_o i_o venture_v upon_o it_o such_o a_o soul_n must_v needs_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o quiet_a second_o one_o that_o be_v humble_a have_v rest_n because_o he_o can_v never_o be_v in_o so_o low_a a_o condition_n but_o his_o heart_n be_v low_a than_o his_o condition_n this_o be_v a_o excellent_a frame_n of_o spirit_n though_o my_o estate_n be_v low_a yet_o my_o heart_n be_v low_a if_o you_o be_v able_a to_o say_v so_o you_o that_o have_v low_a estate_n your_o care_n be_v how_o you_o can_v raise_v your_o estate_n if_o i_o can_v raise_v my_o estate_n as_o high_a as_o other_o then_o i_o shall_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o peace_n and_o comfort_n no_o thy_o way_n must_v be_v to_o lowen_v thy_o heart_n that_o be_v the_o way_n to_o raise_v thy_o estate_n if_o a_o man_n affliction_n be_v above_o his_o heart_n and_o his_o heart_n beneath_o the_o affliction_n if_o the_o fire_n he_o under_o the_o fuel_n than_o the_o fire_n quick_o catch_v the_o fuel_n but_o now_o if_o the_o fire_n be_v above_o the_o fuel_n it_o will_v not_o so_o soon_o kinkle_v it_o so_o i_o say_v in_o a_o man_n affliction_n if_o a_o man_n heart_n be_v above_o his_o affliction_n i_o mean_v in_o a_o sinful_a way_n he_o have_v lift_v up_o his_o heart_n and_o he_o will_v have_v high_a thing_n than_o these_o thing_n be_v and_o these_o thing_n be_v beneath_o his_o spirit_n he_o have_v a_o high_a design_n and_o plot_n and_o aim_v at_o great_a thing_n and_o these_o thing_n be_v beneath_o what_o he_o will_v have_v oh_o then_o the_o affliction_n trouble_v the_o spirit_n but_o when_o a_o man_n spirit_n be_v beneath_o his_o affliction_n then_o a_o man_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o rest_n and_o quiet_a he_o be_v low_a than_o his_o affliction_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v quiet_a three_o another_o thing_n in_o the_o lowliness_n of_o heart_n that_o do_v bring_v quietness_n and_o have_v affinity_n with_o it_o be_v this_o one_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n have_v never_o any_o disappointment_n in_o the_o world_n nothing_o be_v more_o troublesome_a and_o disquiet_v to_o a_o man_n spirit_n then_o disappointment_n now_o one_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n he_o expect_v no_o great_a matter_n in_o this_o world_n and_o therefore_o he_o can_v be_v much_o disappoint_v in_o any_o thing_n that_o befall_v and_o so_o he_o be_v quiet_a you_o that_o have_v great_a plot_n and_o design_n in_o your_o head_n and_o make_v account_n of_o great_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n there_o will_v follow_v many_o cross_n that_o will_v disappoint_v you_o and_o how_o do_v they_o disquiet_v you_o you_o may_v account_v of_o such_o a_o voyage_n and_o when_o it_o be_v lose_v how_o unquiet_a be_v you_o whereas_o one_o that_o be_v lowly_a in_o heart_n he_o be_v quiet_a and_o go_v on_o in_o obedience_n to_o god_n and_o that_o be_v that_o he_o look_v to_o most_o to_o go_v on_o in_o his_o call_n in_o obedience_n to_o god_n and_o leave_v the_o issue_n to_o god_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n come_v in_o he_o receive_v it_o thankful_o because_o he_o be_v most_o unworthy_a if_o he_o be_v cross_v he_o be_v not_o much_o disappoint_v because_o he_o look_v for_o no_o high_a thing_n four_o a_o humble_a heart_n must_v needs_o bring_v rest_n because_o this_o be_v the_o guise_n and_o frame_v of_o it_o it_o will_v have_v god_n to_o have_v his_o glory_n his_o own_o way_n and_o this_o one_o principle_n oh_o what_o abundance_n of_o quiet_a and_o rest_n will_v it_o bring_v to_o a_o man_n spirit_n that_o god_n shall_v have_v his_o glory_n we_o all_o yield_v to_o that_o i_o but_o
the_o righteous_a have_v a_o plain_a path_n to_o heaven_n but_o the_o wicked_a they_o be_v upon_o the_o stone_n they_o be_v upon_o the_o dirt_n when_o one_o come_v upon_o the_o stone_n and_o it_o be_v dirty_a too_o that_o be_v more_o difficult_a but_o the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n be_v plain_a and_o there_o be_v one_o scripture_n more_o remarkable_a than_o these_o and_o that_o be_v in_o 1_o john_n 5._o 3._o and_o his_o commandment_n be_v not_o grievous_a the_o command_n of_o god_n have_v no_o grievousness_n in_o they_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o god_n commandment_n to_o be_v so_o much_o as_o grieve_v to_o a_o gracious_a soul_n it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o god_n delight_v not_o to_o grieve_v the_o child_n of_o man_n certain_o there_o be_v nâ—thing_v that_o god_n require_v of_o thou_o if_o thou_o understand_v it_o aright_o that_o will_v grieve_v thou_o when_o you_o tender_v a_o child_n or_o a_o friend_n you_o will_v not_o require_v of_o they_o any_o thing_n that_o may_v grieve_v they_o now_o christ_n have_v so_o tender_a regard_n unto_o you_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v require_v nothing_o of_o you_o that_o will_v grieve_v you_o and_o therefore_o if_o nothing_o be_v grievous_a in_o god_n commandment_n sure_o his_o yoke_n be_v eâ—sie_a and_o his_o burden_n be_v light_a but_o now_o for_o the_o open_n of_o this_o point_n for_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n that_o have_v need_v to_o be_v say_v to_o it_o for_o the_o open_n of_o it_o and_o make_v it_o useful_a and_o profitable_a i_o shall_v cast_v what_o my_o meditation_n have_v be_v about_o this_o point_n into_o these_o six_o head_n the_o first_o be_v to_o give_v you_o some_o evidence_n of_o it_o that_o this_o be_v so_o and_o then_o the_o second_o thing_n be_v the_o difference_n that_o there_o be_v between_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n find_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n and_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o true_a gracious_a heart_n find_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n those_o that_o be_v carnal_a and_o take_v up_o but_o a_o mere_a formality_n of_o religion_n they_o find_v not_o ease_v but_o those_o that_o be_v true_o religious_a they_o find_v rest_n and_o the_o three_o be_v this_o if_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v easy_a how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o many_o that_o we_o hope_v be_v true_o gracious_a and_o godly_a yet_o make_v such_o complaint_n of_o so_o much_o difficulty_n as_o they_o do_v find_v in_o god_n way_n and_o then_o fourthly_a we_o be_v to_o open_v which_o be_v the_o principal_a of_o all_o in_o the_o explication_n wherein_o the_o easiness_n of_o god_n way_n appear_v what_o be_v those_o thing_n that_o do_v make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n so_o easy_a and_o in_o what_o particular_n do_v consist_v the_o easiness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n and_o then_o five_o some_o consequence_n that_o be_v to_o be_v draw_v from_o this_o which_o be_v by_o way_n of_o application_n and_o sixthly_a and_o last_o some_o direction_n what_o we_o shall_v do_v to_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a these_o be_v the_o six_o head_n that_o i_o cast_v the_o handle_n of_o this_o point_n into_o chap._n cxxxv_o six_o evidence_n of_o the_o former_a doctrine_n in_o the_o last_o chapter_n 1._o because_o the_o word_n that_o enjoin_v these_o way_n be_v sweet_a 2._o a_o gracious_a soul_n count_v his_o duty_n his_o privilege_n 3._o he_o will_v rather_o come_v under_o any_o other_o burden_n than_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n 4._o because_o christ_n who_o yoke_n it_o be_v be_v gentle_a 5._o never_o any_o true_o that_o put_v their_o neck_n under_o this_o yoke_n will_v willing_o take_v it_o out_o again_o 6._o the_o experience_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n prove_v the_o point_n for_o the_o first_o then_o the_o evidence_n that_o do_v demonstrate_v that_o certain_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v easy_a and_o his_o burden_n be_v very_a light_n unto_o those_o that_o have_v indeed_o submit_v their_o neck_n unto_o the_o yoke_n of_o jesus_n christ_n evidence_n 1._o first_o the_o first_o evidence_n be_v this_o sure_o god_n way_n be_v easy_a unto_o they_o for_o there_o be_v none_o that_o be_v true_o gracious_a but_o they_o account_v the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o do_v require_v they_o to_o walk_v in_o those_o way_n very_o sweet_a unto_o they_o and_o they_o prize_v it_o high_o now_o if_o there_o be_v difficulty_n and_o a_o harshness_n in_o god_n way_n certain_o though_o the_o word_n of_o god_n may_v be_v account_v just_a and_o righteous_a yet_o it_o will_v not_o be_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a unto_o the_o soul_n but_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a unto_o a_o gracious_a heart_n than_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o do_v require_v such_o way_n of_o he_o you_o know_v the_o expression_n of_o david_n that_o it_o be_v sweet_a than_o the_o honey_n and_o the_o honey_n comb_n more_o precious_a than_o silver_n or_o gold_n or_o any_o riches_n of_o the_o world_n read_v but_o psal_n 119._o and_o there_o in_o every_o verse_n almost_o you_o find_v such_o expression_n of_o much_o sweetness_n that_o david_n do_v find_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n if_o the_o word_n be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a certain_o the_o way_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a that_o be_v require_v in_o the_o word_n that_o be_v the_o first_o evidence_n 2._o second_o sure_o they_o be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a for_o those_o that_o be_v in_o god_n way_n do_v not_o account_v what_o they_o do_v only_o to_o be_v duty_n but_o privilege_n they_o look_v upon_o every_o thing_n that_o christian_a religion_n require_v of_o they_o not_o only_o as_o duty_n but_o as_o mercy_n as_o that_o wherein_o their_o happiness_n consist_v i_o have_v receive_v mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v faithful_a say_v paul_n i_o do_v not_o say_v i_o have_v receive_v mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v go_v to_o heaven_n that_o i_o may_v be_v reward_v and_o have_v such_o and_o such_o blessing_n but_o i_o count_v it_o mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o make_v i_o faithful_a in_o this_o way_n not_o only_o dutiful_a but_o faithful_a the_o saint_n of_o god_n do_v not_o account_v the_o bond_n of_o obedience_n to_o be_v fetter_n to_o they_o they_o account_v they_o chain_n of_o gold_n about_o their_o neck_n for_o ornament_n not_o bond_n of_o necessity_n to_o tie_v they_o to_o obedience_n because_o otherwise_o they_o will_v not_o obey_v they_o but_o i_o say_v every_o law_n of_o god_n be_v count_v heart_n so_o that_o i_o can_v come_v and_o put_v the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n upon_o i_o better_o o_o bless_a be_v god_n that_o ever_o i_o have_v the_o yoke_n of_o affliction_n upon_o i_o that_o now_o bring_v i_o under_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n more_o can_v thou_o say_v so_o bless_a be_v god_n for_o this_o affliction_n sure_o then_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n be_v easy_a that_o a_o heart_n be_v willing_a to_o bear_v any_o yoke_n that_o may_v but_o further_o it_o to_o the_o bear_n of_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v the_o three_o evidence_n 4._o four_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a yoke_n certain_o for_o it_o be_v christ_n yoke_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v easy_a because_o it_o be_v christ_n and_o that_o upon_o these_o two_o ground_n first_n christ_n himself_o be_v gentle_a and_o sweet_a and_o lovely_a christ_n himself_o have_v no_o rigidness_n no_o sowrness_n in_o he_o towards_o people_n as_o you_o hear_v at_o large_a when_o we_o open_v the_o meekness_n and_o lowliness_n of_o christ_n now_o if_o christ_n be_v meek_a and_o lowly_a he_o love_v no_o bitterness_n and_o rigidness_n if_o i_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o a_o man_n that_o i_o be_v sure_o have_v all_o the_o meekness_n and_o all_o the_o love_n and_o all_o the_o gentleness_n in_o he_o of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o ever_o live_v put_v all_o their_o meekness_n and_o gentleness_n and_o sweetness_n together_o into_o one_o man_n and_o i_o be_v sure_o i_o shall_v never_o have_v any_o yoke_n upon_o i_o but_o what_o that_o man_n shall_v lay_v upon_o i_o true_o i_o will_v never_o fear_v any_o rigidness_n one_o man_n have_v meekness_n and_o gentleness_n i_o but_o he_o have_v rigidness_n too_o and_o another_o man_n have_v one_o drop_n and_o another_o another_o drop_n i_o but_o put_v all_o these_o into_o one_o and_o sure_o that_o man_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o meekness_n now_o jesus_n christ_n have_v all_o in_o he_o and_o if_o it_o be_v his_o yoke_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v pain_n and_o trouble_v and_o misery_n he_o come_v not_o into_o the_o world_n to_o impose_v iron_n yoke_n but_o he_o come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o bring_v the_o mercy_n of_o the_o father_n to_o in_o my_o conscience_n well_o but_o now_o here_o be_v the_o case_n of_o conscience_n whether_o be_v this_o quiet_a that_o i_o have_v in_o my_o conscience_n from_o the_o hope_n i_o have_v of_o god_n mercy_n from_o presumption_n in_o i_o or_o from_o true_a faith_n it_o concern_v every_o one_o to_o get_v this_o case_n of_o conscience_n answer_v now_o i_o know_v no_o great_a help_n for_o the_o answer_v this_o case_n of_o conscience_n than_o this_o one_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o have_v thou_o quiet_a and_o ease_v and_o have_v thou_o hope_v of_o god_n mercy_n and_o do_v that_o bring_v thou_o quiet_a if_o it_o be_v but_o presumption_n it_o make_v thou_o secure_a it_o make_v thou_o barren_a and_o sluggish_a but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o thou_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a in_o thy_o spirit_n and_o thou_o find_v that_o the_o more_o that_o ease_n and_o quiet_a increase_v the_o more_o fruitful_a thou_o be_v in_o all_o good_a work_n it_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o active_a and_o stir_v in_o all_o good_a work_n this_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o it_o come_v from_o faith_n as_o you_o hear_v before_o a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v the_o more_o activeness_n in_o it_o the_o more_o ease_v it_o have_v now_o as_o his_o activeness_n in_o goodness_n cause_v easiness_n in_o his_o heart_n so_o the_o easiness_n in_o his_o heart_n cause_v activeness_n in_o goodness_n there_o be_v a_o mutuallness_n in_o these_o two_o and_o indeed_o this_o latter_a be_v the_o more_o facile_a for_o people_n to_o exam_n in_o themselves_o by_o perhaps_o every_o one_o can_v group_n to_o that_o activeness_n of_o heart_n but_o now_o have_v it_o this_o power_n upon_o your_o heart_n that_o you_o be_v more_o fruitful_a than_o before_o this_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n if_o it_o do_v so_o nine_o and_o then_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n have_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v from_o hence_o because_o he_o have_v but_o only_o one_o principle_n in_o his_o heart_n when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o world_n he_o be_v act_v but_o by_o the_o same_o principle_n in_o both_o there_o be_v not_o a_o contrary_a principle_n in_o his_o heart_n one_o that_o carry_v he_o one_o way_n and_o another_o that_o carry_v he_o another_o way_n but_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n be_v this_o that_o he_o find_v a_o strong_a principle_n that_o overcome_v a_o contrary_a principle_n of_o corruption_n in_o he_o there_o lie_v his_o ease_n a_o carnal_a heart_n go_v on_o and_o perform_v duty_n and_o have_v not_o divers_a principle_n in_o his_o heart_n to_o carry_v he_o this_o way_n or_o that_o way_n but_o have_v only_o one_o principle_n a_o carnal_a principle_n that_o carry_v he_o on_o to_o serve_v his_o own_o end_n and_o sometime_o he_o can_v serve_v his_o end_n in_o one_o thing_n &_o sometime_o in_o another_o thing_n but_o one_o that_o be_v godly_a find_v ease_n from_o hence_o from_o the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n that_o do_v overcome_v his_o corruption_n i_o find_v a_o stir_n in_o my_o heart_n but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o can_v get_v the_o victory_n the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o victory_n that_o it_o get_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n your_o civil_a man_n do_v not_o find_v ease_n from_o their_o victory_n because_o what_o they_o do_v be_v not_o suitable_a to_o they_o but_o a_o godly_a man_n find_v that_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o grace_n that_o oppose_v the_o principle_n of_o lust_n and_o corruption_n and_o therefore_o can_v say_v since_o i_o set_v my_o heart_n towards_o god_n and_o his_o way_n i_o have_v find_v more_o corruption_n than_o before_o stir_v but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o have_v get_v victory_n over_o they_o i_o find_v a_o conquest_n get_v over_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v stir_v in_o my_o soul_n and_o that_o be_v my_o ease_n another_o man_n he_o find_v no_o corruption_n stir_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n if_o he_o find_v ease_n but_o now_o a_o godly_a man_n find_v a_o contrary_a principle_n to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a stir_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o then_o find_v god_n grace_n come_v in_o upon_o his_o heart_n to_o help_v he_o against_o that_o corruption_n and_o this_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a to_o he_o ten_o and_o then_o the_o last_o be_v this_o that_o the_o ease_n the_o one_o have_v come_v from_o this_o that_o all_o that_o he_o do_v he_o preforme_v in_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o he_o do_v not_o see_v any_o need_n of_o any_o further_a strength_n than_o that_o which_o he_o have_v in_o himselelf_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o so_o he_o find_v ease_v as_o a_o man_n find_v his_o trade_n to_o be_v easy_a if_o he_o trade_v with_o his_o own_o stock_n and_o have_v nothing_o but_o his_o own_o stock_n to_o trade_n with_o and_o trade_n in_o no_o high_a thing_n than_o what_o himself_o can_v reach_v unto_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o must_v have_v the_o stock_n of_o other_o man_n to_o trade_n with_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o trouble_n that_o see_v his_o trade_n require_v more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o it_o be_v so_o with_o a_o gracious_a heart_n he_o set_v upon_o duty_n so_o as_o needs_o he_o find_v he_o more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o his_o trade_n be_v beyond_o his_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o he_o come_v to_o want_v strength_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o christ_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o promise_n and_o when_o he_o have_v get_v strength_n from_o christ_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n from_o the_o promise_n oh_o now_o he_o find_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o his_o duty_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o in_o the_o next_o point_n why_o the_o sant_n find_v difficulty_n many_o time_n they_o will_v think_v to_o be_v trade_v with_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o their_o own_o stock_n whenas_o the_o thing_n they_o trade_v about_o be_v beyond_o their_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o when_o they_o can_v look_v high_o and_o see_v a_o fullness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o mediator_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o of_o his_o fullness_n we_o must_v receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o this_o oh_o then_o here_o be_v quiet_a and_o ease_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o trade_n with_o another_o stock_n observe_v this_o you_o will_v find_v it_o as_o certain_a as_o can_v be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v mere_a civil_a people_n that_o find_v it_o so_o easy_a to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n they_o be_v never_o sensible_a of_o any_o need_n they_o have_v of_o any_o more_o strength_n than_o their_o own_o whereas_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n be_v heavy_a than_o any_o natural_a strength_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v and_o therefore_o if_o you_o find_v ease_n in_o that_o you_o have_v strength_n of_o your_o own_o to_o perform_v it_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n but_o now_o when_o you_o find_v your_o own_o strength_n too_o short_a when_o you_o go_v to_o perform_v any_o duty_n and_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n you_o can_v go_v to_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o there_o fetch_v in_o strength_n you_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a oh_o that_o you_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n that_o when_o you_o go_v out_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o you_o find_v they_o difficult_a and_o hard_a that_o then_o you_o can_v go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o the_o covenannt_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o promise_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o they_o to_o perform_v duty_n this_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o it_o find_v ease_n in_o god_n way_n after_o this_o manner_n and_o all_o you_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n know_v that_o whatsoever_o ease_n you_o have_v find_v hitherto_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n but_o rather_o of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n chap._n cxxxix_o divers_a objection_n answer_v the_o easiness_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a mention_v in_o chap._n 139._o quest_n but_o do_v we_o not_o find_v that_o christ_n have_v say_v in_o god_n themselves_o complain_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o do_v they_o not_o oftentimes_o complain_v of_o the_o hardness_n of_o they_o yea_o and_o what_o though_o some_o thing_n may_v be_v easy_a yet_o some_o other_o be_v very_o hard_a as_o you_o will_v say_v to_o the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o church_n be_v that_o easy_a be_v not_o that_o hard_a and_o what_o will_v you_o say_v to_o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n require_v of_o his_o people_n do_v it_o not_o seem_v very_o hard_o answ_n now_o to_o clear_v the_o point_n from_o all_o these_o difficulty_n either_o what_o christ_n say_v of_o the_o straitness_n of_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n or_o what_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n find_v or_o what_o may_v be_v say_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o church_n or_o what_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n require_v notwithstanding_o all_o these_o yet_o we_o hope_v we_o shall_v make_v it_o clear_a that_o yet_o his_o yoke_n be_v easy_a and_o his_o burden_n be_v light_a and_o further_o we_o be_v to_o show_v how_o it_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a and_o light_a but_o first_o to_o clear_v the_o point_n from_o all_o these_o difficulty_n first_n that_o of_o christ_n that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v a_o strait_a way_n a_o very_a strait_a way_n there_o must_v be_v crowd_v and_o take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v straight_o it_o be_v a_o very_a strait_a way_n to_o man_n that_o be_v but_o natural_a that_o be_v not_o his_o disciple_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o strait_a in_o their_o apprehension_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o the_o world_n the_o way_n that_o christ_n do_v propound_v to_o come_v to_o heaven_n it_o must_v needs_o i_o say_v be_v very_o straight_o and_o a_o very_a difficult_a way_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o upon_o these_o ground_n 1._o they_o do_v not_o know_v wherein_o the_o true_a spiritual_a excellency_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n dorh_fw-mi consist_v they_o do_v not_o understand_v what_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n way_n be_v 2._o the_o thing_n that_o be_v require_v be_v unsutiable_a to_o they_o they_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o what_o there_o be_v in_o their_o spirit_n and_o to_o put_v a_o man_n upon_o a_o work_n that_o be_v no_o way_n suitable_a to_o his_o spirit_n must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a must_v needs_o be_v tedious_a it_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o they_o yea_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o they_o contrary_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o be_v natural_a cross_a unto_o the_o grain_n they_o go_v quite_o contrary_a to_o their_o own_o spirit_n when_o they_o venture_v upon_o do_v what_o be_v require_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n 3._o they_o be_v weak_a and_o have_v not_o the_o strength_n that_o shall_v carry_v they_o on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n indeed_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a to_o think_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v supernatural_a &_o have_v nothing_o but_o a_o natural_a strength_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v hard_a to_o nature_n that_o have_v nothing_o but_o weakness_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v hard_a to_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n for_o they_o have_v a_o great_a many_o prejudices_fw-la against_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n they_o must_v deny_v themselves_o in_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v as_o dear_a to_o themselves_o as_o their_o very_a soul_n and_o their_o life_n and_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o make_v up_o their_o comfort_n they_o must_v deny_v their_o comfort_n and_o have_v nothing_o to_o make_v up_o their_o comfort_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a and_o hard_a and_o so_o many_o ground_n may_v be_v show_v that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v hard_a to_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n a_o hard_a thing_n for_o they_o to_o enter_v upon_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n and_o so_o it_o be_v straight_o to_o they_o in_o their_o esteem_n quest_n i_o but_o further_o be_v it_o not_o straight_o unto_o the_o saint_n even_o to_o the_o very_a disciple_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o they_o find_v difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n answ_n now_o for_o the_o answer_n of_o that_o to_o show_v how_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v easy_a notwithstanding_o what_o even_o those_o that_o be_v the_o people_n of_o god_n find_v in_o they_o and_o notwithstanding_o all_o their_o complaint_n those_o that_o be_v godly_a they_o say_v they_o find_v much_o difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n 1._o it_o may_v be_v the_o difficulty_n thou_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v but_o in_o opinion_n rather_o than_o reality_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imaginary_a difficulty_n when_o thou_o look_v upon_o a_o duty_n a_o great_a way_n off_o oh_o thou_o think_v it_o be_v very_o hard_a but_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o it_o thou_o do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o hard_a i_o appeal_v to_o those_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o god_n have_v it_o not_o be_v so_o with_o you_o that_o thing_n have_v seem_v to_o be_v hard_a and_o difficult_a a_o great_a way_n off_o but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v unto_o they_o &_o venture_v upon_o they_o you_o have_v not_o find_v they_o so_o it_o be_v just_a in_o this_o case_n for_o all_o the_o world_n like_a as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o woman_n that_o we_o read_v of_o in_o mark_n 16._o that_o go_v to_o the_o sepulchre_n of_o christ_n as_o they_o be_v go_v at_o verse_n 3_o o_o they_o be_v very_o solicitous_a about_o the_o stone_n that_o be_v roll_v upon_o the_o sepulchre_n who_o shall_v roâ—l_v away_o the_o stone_n but_o now_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o sepulchre_n the_o stone_n be_v roll_v away_o so_o it_o be_v here_o when_o there_o be_v many_o duty_n to_o be_v do_v it_o may_v be_v you_o cry_v out_o oh_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v such_o a_o thing_n such_o a_o poor_a weak_a body_n as_o i_o be_o how_o shall_v i_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n you_o do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o i_o suppose_v there_o be_v many_o that_o at_o first_o think_v it_o a_o very_a difficult_a duty_n to_o keep_v a_o watch_n over_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o pray_v in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n and_o to_o keep_v close_o to_o god_n but_o when_o they_o have_v come_v to_o the_o thing_n sometime_o when_o you_o have_v have_v no_o heart_n to_o pray_v when_o you_o have_v thought_n to_o go_v to_o prayer_n and_o you_o have_v think_v it_o impossible_a for_o you_o to_o make_v any_o work_n of_o it_o but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v to_o it_o you_o have_v find_v it_o before_o you_o have_v do_v to_o be_v a_o very_a sweet_a and_o comfortable_a duty_n you_o have_v find_v a_o stone_n hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o indisposition_n to_o the_o duty_n before_o you_o have_v come_v to_o the_o duty_n but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v to_o the_o work_n you_o have_v find_v the_o stone_n roll_v away_o and_o the_o work_v not_o so_o hard_o as_o we_o read_v of_o peter_n in_o act_n 12._o 10._o when_o he_o be_v come_v out_o of_o the_o city_n and_o those_o with_o he_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o iron_n gate_n in_o be_v and_o level_v the_o lofty_a hill_n come_v in_o a_o fiery_a way_n to_o prepare_v they_o many_o time_n it_o be_v very_o terrible_a and_o they_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n much_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n and_o terror_n at_o first_o i_o but_o this_o be_v but_o to_o get_v â—hy_a neck_n into_o the_o yoke_n this_o be_v not_o the_o difficulty_n of_o christ_n yoke_n but_o it_o be_v the_o bring_v thou_o under_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n therefore_o let_v not_o those_o that_o god_n be_v beginning_n to_o stir_v they_o in_o awaknâ—ng_v their_o conscience_n be_v offend_v make_v whole_a the_o yoke_n will_v seem_v light_n so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o that_o profess_v religion_n and_o it_o may_v be_v have_v true_a grace_n they_o find_v the_o yoke_n very_o haâ—d_a to_o they_o and_o they_o complain_v of_o the_o yoke_n and_o think_v that_o which_o christ_n require_v of_o they_o be_v grievous_a to_o they_o but_o true_o it_o be_v the_o distemper_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o the_o unsoundness_n of_o thy_o spirit_n that_o make_v it_o so_o if_o so_o be_v thy_o heart_n be_v but_o heal_v if_o thy_o hearâ—_n be_v but_o sound_a thou_o will_v not_o find_v any_o such_o difficulty_n in_o any_o way_n of_o christ_n in_o 2_o tim._n 1._o 7._o there_o the_o spirit_n of_o power_n of_o love_n and_o of_o a_o sound_a mind_n be_v join_v together_o where_o there_o be_v a_o sound_a mind_n a_o sound_a spirit_n theâ—e_n will_v be_v power_n there_o will_v be_v strength_n there_o will_v be_v love_n and_o sweetness_n but_o where_o the_o mind_n and_o the_o heart_n be_v unsound_a and_o distemper_v there_o you_o will_v find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n in_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o i_o say_v where_o you_o find_v the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n difficult_a do_v not_o complain_v of_o that_o so_o much_o as_o of_o your_o own_o heart_n and_o labour_n to_o heal_v your_o own_o soul_n and_o then_o it_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o difficult_a and_o that_o be_v the_o three_o answer_n i_o will_v give_v to_o the_o godly_a that_o yet_o find_v difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n it_o be_v not_o because_o of_o the_o yoke_n but_o it_o be_v because_o you_o be_v not_o enough_o under_o the_o yoke_n that_o be_v the_o difficulty_n if_o your_o heart_n be_v under_o it_o more_o than_o it_o be_v it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o difficult_a and_o this_o expression_n may_v serve_v to_o enlighten_v we_o into_o the_o four_o answer_n which_o be_v this_o four_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v hard_o but_o it_o be_v because_o of_o the_o disorder_a carriage_n of_o thy_o spirit_n when_o thou_o be_v under_o it_o not_o only_o from_o a_o distemper_a heart_n that_o thy_o heart_n have_v distemper_n and_o habitual_a corruption_n but_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v do_v a_o duty_n thou_o do_v behave_v thyself_o in_o a_o disorderly_a way_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n the_o disorderly_a behaviour_n of_o thy_o heart_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n as_o now_o we_o know_v it_o be_v with_o some_o bullock_n some_o creature_n that_o be_v unruly_a when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o yoke_n they_o keep_v such_o a_o stir_n and_o riggle_v this_o way_n and_o that_o way_n and_o they_o be_v so_o unquiet_a when_o they_o be_v under_o the_o yoke_n that_o they_o toil_n and_o trouble_v themselves_o abundant_o more_o than_o another_o that_o can_v carry_v the_o yoke_n quiet_o that_o go_v on_o quiet_o with_o his_o yoke_n so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n when_o they_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n if_o they_o can_v do_v it_o as_o they_o will_v they_o do_v so_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o be_v so_o disquiet_v in_o their_o spirit_n and_o so_o tumultuous_a in_o their_o spirit_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o conscience_n will_v keep_v it_o on_o and_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o there_o be_v such_o a_o disorderliness_n of_o spirit_n and_o such_o tumultuousness_n of_o spirit_n this_o make_v duty_n difficult_a whereas_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o performance_n of_o duty_n if_o thou_o can_v be_v under_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n with_o a_o calm_a quiet_a spirit_n and_o carry_v it_o in_o a_o meek_a way_n oh_o the_o sweetness_n that_o thou_o will_v find_v there_o how_o many_o time_n shall_v you_o have_v many_o people_n that_o when_o they_o go_v to_o prayer_n if_o they_o can_v pray_v as_o they_o will_v do_v than_o they_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v to_o pray_v no_o more_o and_o why_o shall_v they_o pray_v any_o more_o they_o be_v so_o disturb_v in_o the_o duty_n they_o think_v it_o be_v better_a to_o cast_v it_o off_o and_o they_o begin_v to_o have_v hard_a thought_n of_o the_o duty_n and_o so_o their_o spirit_n be_v all_o in_o a_o dâ—stemper_n and_o disorderly_a work_n present_o and_o there_o be_v the_o difficulty_n whereas_o another_o though_o he_o can_v do_v what_o he_o will_v yet_o he_o have_v a_o humble_a dispose_n to_o god_n and_o think_v i_o will_v try_v another_o time_n may_v be_v god_n may_v come_v in_o another_o time_n still_o i_o love_v the_o duty_n the_o law_n be_v good_a the_o duty_n be_v just_a and_o good_a and_o though_o through_o the_o untowardness_n of_o my_o spirit_n i_o can_v do_v it_o now_o yet_o i_o hope_v god_n will_v come_v at_o another_o time_n i_o will_v do_v my_o duty_n and_o leave_v it_o to_o god_n to_o come_v in_o when_o he_o please_v as_o you_o hear_v before_o when_o the_o bullock_n or_o the_o heifer_n that_o bear_v the_o yoke_n if_o he_o go_v on_o quier_o his_o yoke_n be_v not_o so_o grievous_a but_o if_o he_o fling_v this_o way_n and_o that_o way_n and_o turn_v to_o this_o side_n and_o that_o side_n every_o way_n he_o make_v his_o yoke_n grievous_a to_o he_o and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n it_o be_v the_o disorderly_a carriage_n of_o people_n under_o this_o yoke_n that_o make_v it_o so_o difficult_a five_o thou_o complain_v and_o say_v this_o yoke_n be_v hard_a consider_v that_o the_o cast_n of_o the_o yoke_n off_o will_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n hard_o and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n to_o complain_v can_v a_o man_n in_o a_o rational_a way_n complain_v of_o a_o yoke_n to_o be_v hard_a whenas_o the_o cast_n of_o the_o yoke_n off_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a thing_n than_o the_o bear_n of_o it_o therefore_o the_o hebrew_n word_n that_o signify_v sin_n signify_v also_o labour_n and_o trouble_v there_o be_v more_o trouble_n if_o thou_o shall_v cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n thou_o will_v find_v more_o distress_n of_o spirit_n and_o more_o difficulty_n in_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n then_o to_o be_v under_o the_o yoke_n it_o be_v true_a those_o that_o be_v carnal_a and_o wicked_a do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o but_o if_o thou_o have_v grace_n if_o thou_o shall_v cast_v off_o the_o duty_n because_o of_o the_o difficulty_n thou_o will_v find_v it_o more_o difficult_a to_o be_v without_o the_o duty_n then_o to_o perform_v it_o as_o i_o will_v instance_n to_o your_o own_o experience_n you_o fiend_n sometime_o that_o your_o heart_n be_v loath_a to_o come_v off_o to_o prayer_n

between_o god_n people_n than_o former_o the_o time_n have_v be_v when_o some_o that_o have_v be_v alone_o have_v be_v strive_v and_o tug_v and_o can_v not_o get_v their_o heart_n into_o any_o good_a frame_n they_o have_v come_v buâ—_n into_o the_o company_n of_o god_n people_n &_o lay_v their_o experience_n together_o and_o warm_v themselves_o together_o and_o then_o they_o have_v go_v away_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v trouble_v in_o the_o family_n between_o wife_n and_o husband_n in_o regard_n of_o passion_n when_o they_o have_v be_v among_o god_n people_n they_o can_v carry_v themselves_o in_o a_o gracious_a manner_n oh_o communion_n much_o communion_n with_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o that_o facilitate_v the_o way_n of_o religion_n we_o know_v in_o travel_v if_o a_o man_n be_v travel_v a_o journey_n all_o alone_o especial_o if_o he_o have_v wind_n and_o weather_n against_o he_o his_o way_n be_v tedious_a to_o he_o very_o hard_a and_o grievous_a and_o he_o be_v tire_v in_o his_o journey_n but_o now_o if_o he_o travel_v and_o have_v good_a company_n and_o good_a discourse_n and_o be_v joyful_a and_o cheerful_a when_o he_o be_v go_v his_o journey_n be_v nothing_o when_o he_o come_v to_o the_o inn_n he_o say_v i_o thank_v god_n i_o be_o not_o weary_a at_o all_o why_o be_v it_o so_o the_o journey_n be_v long_o i_o but_o the_o company_n be_v good_a the_o discourse_n be_v good_a and_o that_o make_v it_o easy_a so_o it_o be_v in_o our_o journey_n to_o heaven_n we_o complain_v of_o tediousness_n in_o our_o journey_n why_o be_v it_o because_o we_o love_v to_o be_v alone_o as_o many_o that_o be_v of_o a_o dumpish_a disposition_n love_v always_o to_o be_v alone_o there_o be_v a_o time_n indeed_o that_o people_n shall_v be_v alone_o &_o they_o have_v sweet_a refresh_n from_o god_n that_o way_n but_o there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o have_v society_n with_o the_o saint_n and_o it_o be_v a_o ordinance_n appoint_v by_o god_n for_o the_o facilitate_v of_o god_n way_n while_o we_o be_v pass_v in_o the_o wilderness_n in_o our_o way_n to_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o make_v conscience_n of_o that_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o spiritualise_v your_o communion_n and_o make_v what_o use_v you_o can_v of_o they_o to_o help_v you_o in_o your_o christian_a course_n 13._o another_o rule_n be_v this_o exercise_v much_o faith_n faith_n do_v facilitate_v every_o action_n as_o unbelief_n make_v every_o thing_n difficult_a let_v a_o man_n be_v put_v upon_o any_o duty_n if_o he_o have_v a_o they_o shall_v not_o pore_v upon_o the_o difficulty_n but_o exercise_v faith_n and_o come_v with_o courage_n to_o the_o duty_n and_o god_n will_v carry_v you_o through_o god_n that_o call_v i_o to_o a_o work_n he_o will_v give_v i_o strength_n in_o the_o work_n and_o therefore_o let_v i_o go_v to_o the_o work_n as_o if_o i_o be_v carry_v through_o it_o already_o go_v on_o with_o confidence_n and_o resolution_n and_o take_v heed_n of_o unbelief_n up_o and_o be_v do_v and_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v with_o you_o so_o do_v you_o say_v to_o your_o soul_n when_o you_o be_v discourage_v in_o the_o work_n oh_o such_o and_o such_o have_v miscarry_v and_o how_o shall_v so_o weak_a a_o soul_n as_o i_o do_v well_o up_o and_o be_v do_v and_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v with_o you_o 14._o last_o do_v not_o satisfy_v yourselves_o that_o you_o have_v grace_n but_o labour_n to_o have_v strength_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v easy_a to_o a_o strong_a man_n that_o be_v hard_a to_o a_o weak_a now_o christian_n shall_v not_o satisfy_v themselves_o with_o god_n grace_n god_n have_v begin_v grace_n in_o thou_o you_o will_v say_v he_o that_o have_v the_o least_o dram_n of_o grace_n it_o will_v god_n the_o greatness_n of_o his_o power_n the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n and_o the_o exceed_a greatness_n of_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n and_o the_o same_o that_o god_n put_v forth_o when_o he_o raise_v christ_n from_o the_o dead_a &_o set_v he_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o father_n thou_o say_v thou_o have_v a_o dead_a heart_n but_o will_v not_o the_o power_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n and_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n amiable_a and_o lovely_a unto_o other_o well_o consider_v what_o have_v be_v say_v in_o this_o text_n many_o truth_n you_o can_v but_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o near_o concern_v you_o now_o know_v that_o god_n will_v require_v this_o text_n at_o our_o hand_n this_o invitation_n of_o christ_n come_v to_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a &_o heavy_a lade_v &_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n take_v my_o yoke_n upon_o you_o and_o learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n for_o my_o yoke_n be_v easy_a and_o my_o burden_n light_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o same_z and_o the_o very_a marrow_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v in_o this_o invitation_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o i_o have_v labour_v to_o show_v you_o as_o full_o as_o i_o can_v what_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v intend_v in_o this_o invitation_n and_o to_o lay_v before_o you_o all_o those_o truth_n that_o be_v here_o and_o have_v labour_v to_o work_v they_o upon_o your_o heart_n hope_v that_o the_o impression_n of_o divers_a thing_n that_o have_v be_v deliver_v from_o this_o scripture_n in_o the_o invitation_n of_o christ_n be_v upon_o your_o spirit_n and_o shall_v remain_v in_o many_o of_o your_o soul_n even_o to_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o jesus_n christ_n when_o he_o shall_v come_v again_o with_o another_o invitation_n and_o say_v come_v come_v you_o bless_v of_o my_o father_n inherit_v the_o kingdom_n prepare_v for_o you_o i_o say_v christ_n will_v look_v upon_o you_o have_v the_o impression_n of_o this_o invitation_n upon_o your_o heart_n and_o certain_o christ_n when_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o judgement_n when_o poor_a soul_n shall_v do_v this_o invitation_n prevail_v have_v these_o argument_n prevail_v with_o your_o spirit_n and_o do_v you_o keep_v the_o impression_n of_o these_o upon_o your_o spirit_n can_v you_o if_o jesus_n christ_n be_v to_o come_v to_o judgement_n show_v the_o impression_n of_o these_o invitation_n upon_o your_o heart_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o have_v invite_v we_o and_o many_o argument_n have_v be_v use_v to_o draw_v we_o unto_o thou_o and_o our_o spirit_n be_v come_v to_o thou_o and_o behold_v now_o the_o impression_n of_o those_o truth_n upon_o our_o heart_n oh_o if_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n to_o show_v the_o impression_n of_o these_o truth_n upon_o your_o heart_n you_o will_v be_v happy_a and_o then_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o other_o invitation_n come_v you_o bless_v of_o my_o father_n that_o will_v come_v full_o upon_o you_o the_o remembrance_n of_o the_o work_n of_o this_o invitation_n upon_o you_o oh_o how_o sweet_a will_v it_o be_v to_o you_o and_o for_o other_o that_o shall_v live_v wicked_o when_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o that_o day_n when_o christ_n shall_v invite_v other_o unto_o he_o come_v you_o bless_v of_o my_o father_n when_o they_o shall_v remember_v that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o we_o hear_v a_o bless_a sweet_a invitation_n of_o christ_n open_v to_o we_o in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n we_o hear_v christ_n call_v come_v come_v and_o profess_v that_o his_o yoke_n be_v easy_a and_o his_o burden_n light_n and_o yet_o we_o follow_v after_o our_o lust_n and_o wicked_a sinful_a lust_n and_o wicked_a sinful_a way_n and_o now_o we_o hear_v that_o the_o saint_n that_o do_v come_v upon_o his_o invitation_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v bless_v for_o ever_o but_o christ_n will_v not_o call_v we_o to_o he_o we_o will_v not_o have_v his_o yoke_n upon_o we_o then_o and_o therefore_o now_o we_o must_v be_v cast_v off_o and_o have_v the_o iron_n yoke_n of_o the_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n and_o curse_v of_o eternal_a displeasure_n upon_o we_o now_o the_o lord_n persuade_v you_o to_o take_v those_o easy_a yoke_n of_o christ_n upon_o you_o for_o the_o present_a rather_o than_o god_n eternal_a wrath_n
