holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n or_o be_v a_o christian_n in_o nature_n the_o more_o uncharitable_a and_o inconsistent_a then_o be_v this_o rector_n in_o charge_v we_o with_o venom_n give_v our_o doctrine_n the_o character_n of_o the_o venom_n of_o quakerism_n and_o the_o quaker_n indefinite_o that_o of_o deceitful_a worker_n transform_v themselves_o into_o the_o my_o see_a cause_n to_o construe_v my_o friend_n word_n and_o intention_n as_o if_o we_o be_v hence_o to_o be_v mistrust_v in_o our_o orthodox_n confession_n whereupon_o he_o present_o pass_v judgement_n against_o the_o quaker_n viz._n that_o they_o have_v a_o nauseous_a pill_n to_o give_v you_o but_o that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v distasteful_a they_o gild_v it_o over_o as_o the_o writer_n of_o popery_n in_o the_o late_a k._n j_n reign_n the_o other_o day_n do_v with_o more_o such_o bitter_a envious_a stuff_n and_o false_a judgement_n to_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o submit_v nor_o give_v away_o our_o sincerity_n or_o holy_a profession_n of_o christ_n and_o christianity_n which_o he_o can_v deny_v to_o be_v orthodox_n in_o itself_o nor_o extinguish_v our_o sincerity_n therein_o but_o only_o strive_v to_o cloud_n by_o reproach_n groundless_a jealousy_n and_o misconstruction_n and_o perversion_n which_o be_v not_o as_o he_o will_v be_v do_v by_o to_o be_v sure_a but_o if_o a_o scripture_n declare_v be_v sufficient_a to_o entitle_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o christian_n how_o many_o do_v believe_v and_o confess_v thus_o much_o of_o christ_n and_o yet_o unsanctified_a unregenerate_a impenitent_a ungodly_a and_o unchristian_a in_o spirit_n and_o conversation_n so_o that_o they_o be_v not_o in_o the_o true_a live_a faith_n in_o christ_n jesus_n though_o they_o have_v a_o historical_a and_o traditional_a one_o and_o perhaps_o may_v be_v baptise_a or_o sprinkle_a with_o water_n too_o but_o of_o that_o the_o rector_n here_o write_v somewhat_o faint_o and_o dubious_o as_o thought_n by_o some_o also_o necessary_a i._n e._n to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_a page_v 9_o but_o afterward_o he_o be_v more_o positive_a in_o this_o point_n that_o it_o be_v necessary_a as_o the_o sacred_a ordinance_n of_o christ_n and_o saving_n p._n 27._o necessary_a to_o enter_v man_n into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n from_o john_n 3._o 5._o p._n 28._o for_o remission_n and_o do_v away_o sin_n cleanse_v of_o our_o soul_n that_o the_o spirit_n do_v sanctify_v the_o water_n in_o baptism_n to_o the_o mystical_a wash_v away_o of_o sin_n p._n 29_o 31_o 32._o but_o as_o for_o infant_n partake_v thereof_o he_o evade_v proof_n it_o be_v not_o his_o business_n here_o to_o prove_v he_o say_v p._n 27._o so_o that_o he_o both_o evade_v defend_v their_o own_o practice_n and_o leave_v people_n at_o a_o uncertainty_n of_o the_o subject_n of_o this_o ignorant_o suppose_v save_v soul_n cleanse_v and_o mystical_a wash_a ordinance_n make_v use_n of_o the_o anabaptist_n argument_n for_o baptise_v believer_n with_o water_n which_o be_v no_o proof_n for_o rantism_n or_o sprinkle_v upon_o infant_n thus_o he_o attempt_v to_o show_v people_n the_o way_n or_o mean_n of_o regeneration_n and_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o he_o lay_v the_o stress_n thereof_o upon_o the_o outward_a baptism_n by_o water_n and_o not_o upon_o the_o inward_a baptism_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v find_v out_o a_o easy_a way_n to_o make_v christian_n and_o to_o get_v to_o heaven_n at_o this_o rate_n his_o business_n here_o be_v to_o prove_v whether_o outward_a baptism_n by_o water_n be_v the_o sacred_a ordinance_n of_o christ_n as_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v and_o save_v or_o inward_a baptism_n i._n e._n the_o wash_v or_o cleanse_v of_o the_o heart_n or_o a_o inward_a conversion_n to_o god_n p._n 27._o so_o that_o by_o this_o the_o save_v baptism_n must_v be_v the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o he_o place_v it_o upon_o the_o outward_a water_n of_o baptism_n as_o necessary_a to_o the_o cleanse_n of_o our_o soul_n mystical_a wash_v away_o of_o sin_n p._n 31_o 32._o therefore_o not_o upon_o the_o inward_a baptism_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o that_o be_v not_o sufficient_a he_o say_v p._n 29._o no_o what_o be_v it_o good_a for_o then_o he_o tell_v we_o the_o inward_a baptism_n be_v but_o a_o necessary_a qualification_n for_o the_o reception_n sprinkle_a can_v they_o prove_v be_v thus_o first_o qualify_v by_o the_o inward_a baptism_n of_o the_o spirit_n what_o confuse_a and_o bewilder_v work_n do_v we_o meet_v withal_o from_o some_o angry_a opposer_n upon_o the_o whole_a the_o man_n definition_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v sum_v up_o in_o this_o viz._n that_o the_o wash_v of_o regeneration_n by_o the_o word_n of_o life_n the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a baptism_n be_v not_o save_v or_o sufficient_a to_o make_v a_o true_a christian_a but_o water-baptism_n and_o whether_o that_o must_v be_v of_o

infant_n or_o believer_n we_o be_v leave_v at_o uncertainty_n by_o this_o rector_n it_o be_v enough_o with_o he_o to_o cry_v it_o must_v be_v with_o water_n water_n but_o who_o who_o must_v come_v under_o it_o man_n or_o babe_n here_o we_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n what_o a_o easy_a way_n it_o be_v to_o make_v christian_n and_o to_o get_v to_o heaven_n if_o this_o be_v it_o viz._n learn_v and_o believe_v your_o creed_n and_o that_o you_o be_v inward_o wash_v regenerate_v and_o enter_v into_o god_n kingdom_n by_o your_o water-baptism_n whether_o as_o infant_n or_o grow_v up_o be_v still_o the_o question_n this_o rector_n bold_o tell_v we_o nay_o further_o it_o appear_v that_o before_o our_o saviour_n baptise_a those_o in_o judea_n he_o represent_v the_o solemnity_n of_o baptism_n as_o a_o thing_n necessary_a to_o enter_v man_n into_o that_o kingdom_n of_o god_n to_o which_o he_o invite_v they_o our_o saviour_n not_o only_o tell_v nicodemus_n john_n 3._o 5._o that_o except_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v not_o see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o more_o plain_o that_o except_o he_o be_v bear_v again_o of_o water_n p._n 5._o and_o of_o the_o spirit_n he_o can_v not_o enter_v into_o it_o p._n 28._o in_o this_o interpretation_n of_o john_n 3._o 5._o to_o outward_a water_n the_o rector_n exact_o agree_v with_o the_o popish_a notion_n and_o interpretation_n thereof_o that_o no_o man_n can_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n nor_o into_o the_o fellowship_n of_o holy_a church_n without_o water-baptism_n as_o hold_v by_o the_o rhemist_n see_v their_o annotation_n upon_o john_n 3._o 5._o and_o therein_o oppose_v by_o the_o protestant_n as_o appear_v in_o dr._n fulk_n answer_n viz._n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a in_o this_o entitle_v a_o brief_a discovery_n of_o some_o of_o the_o blasphemy_n and_o seditious_a principle_n etc._n etc._n the_o other_o entitle_v some_o few_o of_o the_o quaker_n many_o horrid_a blasphemy_n heresy_n etc._n etc._n and_o also_o a_o sheet_n entitle_v some_o reason_n humble_o offer_v why_o the_o quaker_n shall_v be_v examine_v p._n 6_o 7._o here_o we_o may_v observe_v this_o rector_n have_v own_v these_o same_o book_n as_o well_o as_o present_v they_o to_o the_o parliament_n now_o one_o of_o they_o that_o be_v a_o libel_n style_v some_o few_o have_v a_o owner_n with_o the_o rest_n thou_o therefore_o john_n meriton_n rector_n so_o call_v art_n accountable_a for_o the_o manifold_a abuse_n perversion_n calumny_n and_o traducing_n which_o be_v in_o those_o book_n and_o detect_v in_o my_o truth_n and_o innocency_n vindicate_v which_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o will_v turn_v to_o your_o great_a shame_n and_o disgrace_n who_o promote_v they_o as_o will_n also_o your_o strenuous_a quakerism_n as_o he_o unjust_o defame_v we_o he_o accuse_v we_o with_o dubious_a and_o equivocal_a term_n agreeable_a to_o those_o of_o the_o oracle_n of_o the_o heathen_a p._n 7._o for_o our_o heaven_n the_o father_n the_o word_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o that_o these_o three_o be_v one_o according_a to_o holy_a scripture_n testimony_n these_o the_o rector_n have_v judge_v as_o
