have_v a_o be_v and_o a_o solid_a subsistence_n but_o the_o other_o rare_o touch_v we_o with_o any_o force_n and_o so_o appear_v as_o if_o they_o be_v only_o in_o our_o fancy_n our_o soul_n seem_v to_o we_o in_o our_o careless_a thought_n as_o if_o it_o be_v but_o a_o breath_n or_o a_o thin_a vapour_n but_o our_o body_n we_o perceive_v to_o be_v a_o massy_a bulk_n of_o who_o concern_v we_o be_v therefore_o very_o apprehensive_a the_o divine_a be_v though_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o seem_v but_o like_o a_o shadow_n on_o who_o our_o soul_n have_v no_o fast_n hold_v it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o we_o rather_o catch_v at_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o can_v grasp_v and_o feel_v to_o have_v some_o substance_n in_o they_o the_o report_n of_o immortal_a life_n and_o bliss_n in_o heaven_n come_v to_o we_o like_o a_o common_a story_n of_o which_o there_o be_v some_o probability_n but_o no_o certainty_n and_o that_o incline_v we_o to_o close_v so_o greedy_o with_o the_o
enjoyment_n of_o this_o life_n which_o make_v more_o strong_a impression_n on_o our_o body_n than_o the_o other_o on_o our_o spirit_n the_o glass_n through_o which_o we_o look_v upon_o this_o low_a world_n make_v every_o thing_n we_o desire_v appear_v exceed_o great_a nay_o multiply_v and_o increase_v it_o to_o vast_a dimension_n but_o when_o we_o cast_v our_o eye_n upward_o towards_o our_o heavenly_a country_n alas_o thing_n appear_v there_o as_o if_o we_o have_v turn_v about_o the_o perspective_n so_o little_a so_o remote_a so_o like_o nothing_o that_o we_o can_v scarce_o discern_v they_o or_o retain_v any_o remembrance_n of_o they_o we_o have_v a_o kind_n of_o opinion_n and_o half_a persuasion_n concern_v these_o inward_a and_o intellectual_a object_n but_o we_o have_v a_o sense_n and_o full_a apprehension_n of_o our_o outward_a enjoyment_n now_o though_o opinion_n may_v govern_v we_o and_o we_o may_v follow_v it_o while_o there_o be_v no_o considerable_a impediment_n to_o oppose_v it_o yet_o when_o any_o difficulty_n arise_v or_o something_o cross_v our_o way_n to_o which_o we_o stand_v very_o much_o affect_v it_o will_v soon_o submit_v itself_o and_o leave_v we_o to_o our_o new_a inclination_n because_o it_o be_v but_o a_o opinion_n we_o must_v confirm_v our_o soul_n therefore_o in_o a_o full_a belief_n of_o those_o spiritual_a thing_n which_o thus_o differ_v from_o a_o bare_a opinion_n of_o they_o the_o one_o be_v ground_v only_o upon_o probable_a reason_n or_o on_o good_a reason_n but_o half_o consider_v and_o feeble_o assent_v unto_o the_o other_o upon_o clear_a and_o manifest_a evidence_n well_o digest_v and_o full_o entertain_v so_o that_o the_o one_o leave_v we_o weak_a and_o waver_a because_o it_o leave_v we_o half_a in_o and_o half_a out_o of_o the_o arm_n of_o truth_n but_o the_o other_o make_v we_o firm_a constant_a and_o unmoveable_a because_o it_o put_v we_o complete_o and_o entire_o into_o its_o embrace_n all_o those_o time_n than_o which_o be_v so_o favourable_a as_o to_o let_v your_o mind_n be_v free_a and_o uncloged_a spend_v some_o of_o your_o retire_a thought_n in_o the_o company_n of_o immaterial_a being_n and_o approach_v so_o near_o they_o that_o you_o even_o feel_v and_o handle_v they_o and_o remain_v persuade_v they_o be_v no_o less_o real_a than_o those_o which_o you_o see_v and_o hear_v and_o touch_v with_o your_o outward_a man_n by_o which_o mean_v they_o will_v infinite_o more_o engage_v your_o affection_n and_o tie_v your_o heart_n unto_o they_o than_o any_o thing_n else_o can_v do_v because_o of_o the_o vast_a disproportion_n which_o every_o one_o acknowledge_v suppose_v their_o existence_n between_o they_o and_o all_o that_o you_o love_v in_o this_o sensible_a world_n 1._o think_v first_o of_o all_o that_o your_o body_n be_v but_o the_o clothes_n and_o garment_n of_o your_o soul_n and_o that_o this_o indeed_o be_v the_o man_n and_o undress_v yourself_o in_o your_o own_o thought_n strip_v yourself_o of_o these_o robe_n and_o conceive_v that_o you_o be_v only_o a_o naked_a spirit_n this_o you_o can_v do_v and_o thereby_o you_o will_v both_o make_v your_o soul_n think_v more_o of_o itself_o and_o you_o will_v likewise_o plain_o prove_v it_o be_v quite_o distinct_a from_o your_o body_n in_o who_o society_n though_o it_o live_v yet_o be_v not_o of_o its_o lineage_n but_o of_o another_o nature_n and_o original_n for_o nothing_o can_v think_v itself_o not_o to_o be_v since_o by_o its_o very_a think_v so_o it_o prove_v that_o it_o have_v a_o be_v but_o we_o can_v quite_o put_v off_o all_o thought_n that_o we_o have_v this_o body_n hang_v about_o we_o and_o the_o soul_n can_v think_v itself_o to_o be_v what_o now_o it_o be_v though_o it_o look_v not_o through_o these_o eye_n nor_o speak_v with_o this_o tongue_n nor_o write_v with_o these_o hand_n nor_o have_v any_o other_o thing_n about_o it_o but_o its_o own_o thought_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o body_n but_o some_o better_a and_o more_o noble_a substance_n it_o be_v that_o which_o tell_v you_o that_o you_o have_v a_o body_n if_o you_o believe_v it_o you_o have_v reason_n to_o believe_v withal_o that_o itself_o be_v some_o other_o be_v of_o more_o force_n and_o long_a continuance_n because_o you_o can_v now_o think_v you_o have_v castoff_fw-mi your_o body_n and_o conceive_v it_o lie_v in_o the_o dust_n your_o soul_n still_o remain_v as_o it_o be_v full_a of_o these_o and_o other_o such_o like_a thought_n but_o you_o can_v never_o think_v you_o have_v no_o soul_n because_o even_o by_o that_o conception_n you_o prove_v that_o you_o have_v and_o show_v yourself_o to_o be_v a_o thoughtful_a thing_n 2._o when_o you_o have_v thus_o therefore_o discourse_v yourself_o into_o some_o feel_n of_o your_o soul_n think_v in_o the_o next_o place_n very_o serious_o that_o whatsoever_o you_o clear_o apprehend_v by_o this_o though_o it_o be_v perceive_v by_o none_o of_o your_o outward_a sense_n yet_o be_v no_o less_o real_a and_o certain_a than_o what_o you_o use_v with_o they_o disbelieve_v your_o eye_n and_o think_v that_o your_o ear_n bring_v you_o a_o false_a report_n rather_o than_o doubt_v of_o any_o thing_n which_o your_o mind_n do_v plain_o and_o distinct_o perceive_v though_o you_o can_v but_o yield_v a_o assent_n to_o the_o relation_n which_o any_o of_o your_o sense_n make_v you_o yet_o since_o the_o mind_n be_v the_o more_o excellent_a principle_n and_o it_o have_v a_o most_o certain_a existence_n give_v the_o great_a credit_n to_o what_o it_o affirm_v when_o none_o of_o they_o can_v afford_v you_o any_o evidence_n 3._o and_o then_o you_o will_v present_o find_v that_o your_o mind_n assert_v nothing_o so_o strong_o as_o the_o be_v of_o a_o god_n without_o who_o it_o can_v not_o be_v persuade_v yourself_o therefore_o as_o confident_o of_o he_o as_o you_o do_v of_o that_o which_o your_o eye_n behold_v though_o your_o eye_n see_v he_o not_o as_o they_o do_v the_o sun_n yet_o say_v to_o yourself_o my_o soul_n do_v which_o give_v as_o sound_v a_o evidence_n on_o his_o behalf_n as_o my_o eye_n do_v for_o the_o sun_n that_o great_a light_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o globe_n of_o fire_n which_o i_o see_v in_o the_o sky_n declare_v he_o as_o clear_o to_o my_o mind_n as_o they_o do_v themselves_o to_o my_o outward_a sense_n i_o can_v think_v of_o they_o nor_o of_o myself_o nor_o of_o any_o thing_n else_o in_o this_o great_a world_n but_o a_o divine_a be_v present_n itself_o before_o i_o by_o who_o incomparable_a wisdom_n and_o almighty_a goodness_n they_o be_v at_o once_o produce_v and_o set_v in_o this_o beautiful_a and_o useful_a order_n in_o which_o i_o behold_v they_o exhort_v yourself_o therefore_o to_o but_o the_o good_a be_v best_a instruct_v by_o their_o enjoyment_n ingrateful_a people_n think_v of_o god_n when_o he_o take_v away_o his_o blessing_n from_o they_o but_o ingenuous_a and_o thankful_a we_o here_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o compassion_n to_o the_o weakness_n of_o our_o apprehension_n and_o to_o let_v we_o see_v that_o all_o bodily_a delight_n administer_v occasion_n for_o pious_a thought_n and_o holy_a desire_n after_o divine_a enjoyment_n god_n will_v preserve_v we_o from_o sink_v into_o a_o fleshly_a sense_n by_o our_o daily_a a_o more_o liberal_a entertainment_n of_o that_o kind_n and_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o phrase_n in_o the_o gospel_n which_o represent_v lazarus_n carry_v by_o angel_n into_o abraham_n bosom_n high_a world_n and_o likewise_o with_o the_o good_n of_o the_o body_n in_o this_o world_n which_o be_v sensible_a to_o we_o now_o such_o a_o friendship_n there_o be_v between_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o nearness_n and_o between_o the_o upper_a and_o low_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n if_o you_o so_o conceive_v of_o it_o by_o reason_n as_o i_o may_v call_v it_o of_o their_o oneness_n that_o they_o do_v mutual_a good_a office_n for_o each_o other_o when_o they_o be_v able_a and_o as_o the_o soul_n lend_v such_o a_o great_a part_n of_o itself_o to_o serve_v of_o bodily_a enjoyment_n and_o due_a attendance_n to_o the_o outward_a man_n moderate_a satisfaction_n the_o spirit_n ofttimes_o be_v make_v so_o mild_a and_o sweet_a so_o cheerful_a and_o compliant_a that_o the_o mind_n find_v they_o more_o ready_a and_o forward_o to_o accompany_v it_o in_o the_o contemplation_n of_o divine_a object_n and_o it_o serve_v itself_o the_o more_o by_o serve_v the_o body_n for_o a_o while_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a part_n when_o the_o mind_n converse_v with_o heavenly_a thing_n they_o so_o powerful_o touch_v it_o at_o certain_a season_n that_o they_o make_v a_o motion_n there_o all_o over_o even_o as_o far_o as_o the_o very_a skirt_n of_o its_o territory_n the_o heart_n be_v glad_a the_o spirit_n leap_v and_o dance_v for_o joy_n and_o the_o very_a blood_n in_o our_o vein_n run_v the_o smooth_a for_o it_o now_o while_o we_o have_v this_o sensible_a delectation_n in_o the_o border_n of_o our_o soul_n by_o the_o agitation_n of_o the_o animal_n spirit_n to_o which_o the_o mind_n communicate_v its_o resentment_n there_o be_v no_o part_n of_o we_o but_o can_v be_v well_o content_a to_o accompany_v the_o mind_n in_o its_o devotion_n and_o they_o will_v not_o be_v incline_v to_o with_o draw_v their_o attendance_n from_o these_o delightful_a service_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o the_o mind_n through_o incapacity_n it_o be_v like_a of_o the_o body_n to_o receive_v they_o can_v impress_v its_o perception_n upon_o the_o spirit_n nor_o make_v such_o a_o warmth_n and_o
heat_n in_o they_o that_o they_o be_v please_v and_o move_v delightful_o though_o it_o real_o have_v no_o less_o of_o god_n in_o itself_o than_o it_o have_v before_o when_o they_o skip_v for_o joy_n yet_o now_o the_o body_n become_v like_o a_o lump_n of_o clay_n and_o can_v endure_v to_o be_v draw_v any_o long_o to_o these_o holy_a duty_n yea_o the_o soul_n itself_o unless_o it_o due_o consider_v will_v begin_v hereat_o to_o be_v great_o deject_v and_o to_o have_v little_a list_n to_o that_o which_o give_v so_o small_a contentment_n to_o it_o as_o it_o be_v a_o inhabitant_n in_o flesh_n and_o which_o make_v its_o abode_n nothing_o pleasant_a and_o comfortable_a for_o the_o present_a but_o if_o in_o this_o state_n the_o mind_n recollect_v itself_o and_o consider_v that_o for_o its_o part_n it_o do_v what_o it_o do_v before_o though_o it_o do_v not_o feel_v itself_o and_o perceive_v its_o power_n in_o the_o same_o manner_n and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o produce_v these_o pleasurable_a motion_n in_o the_o low_a man_n and_o that_o they_o be_v more_o please_v to_o we_o than_o unto_o god_n it_o may_v present_o have_v rational_a satisfaction_n and_o tranquillity_n in_o example_n of_o they_o in_o the_o holy_a book_n that_o we_o can_v think_v they_o be_v to_o be_v despise_v nay_o it_o be_v likely_a that_o good_a man_n find_v by_o a_o outward_o humble_v body_n that_o the_o mind_n be_v more_o affect_v and_o apt_a to_o be_v humble_v therewith_o but_o then_o remember_v that_o it_o be_v far_o better_a when_o the_o mind_n affect_v the_o body_n than_o when_o the_o body_n affect_v the_o mind_n and_o we_o shall_v strive_v rather_o after_o that_o though_o we_o shall_v not_o reject_v the_o help_n of_o this_o i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o instance_n which_o shall_v god_n that_o you_o shall_v be_v as_o you_o be_v and_o if_o this_o dulness_n please_v he_o it_o need_v not_o displease_v you_o remember_v also_o that_o he_o be_v not_o perfect_a in_o patience_n who_o
