game_n &c._n &c._n the_o lust_n of_o his_o covetousness_n will_v be_v curb_v and_o his_o gain_n will_v not_o come_v in_o with_o such_o a_o full_a career_n unto_o he_o now_o all_o these_o sin_n forenamed_a be_v but_o attendant_n and_o slave_n unto_o this_o one_o lust_n so_o many_o man_n it_o may_v be_v will_v give_v over_o a_o thousand_o sin_n yea_o all_o except_o this_o one_o yet_o all_o those_o thousand_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v he_o scarce_o think_v upon_o any_o of_o they_o why_o because_o they_o be_v take_v up_o with_o a_o high_a lust_n even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o civil_a formal_a professor_n they_o will_v come_v to_o church_n miss_v never_o a_o sermon_n that_o they_o can_v come_v unto_o they_o will_v talk_v of_o heaven_n they_o will_v not_o omit_v any_o holy_a communication_n they_o will_v read_v the_o scripture_n pray_v in_o their_o family_n neglect_v no_o holy_a duty_n why_o then_o what_o be_v their_o sin_n it_o be_v not_o the_o omit_v of_o these_o thing_n but_o the_o careless_a practice_n of_o they_o in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n for_o although_o these_o sin_n be_v in_o a_o swoon_n the_o strength_n of_o they_o be_v go_v up_o to_o maintain_v a_o high_a lust_n for_o suppose_v he_o go_v not_o to_o church_n how_o shall_v he_o maintain_v his_o profession_n and_o if_o he_o can_v not_o now_o and_o then_o speak_v of_o heaven_n it_o be_v impossible_a he_o shall_v have_v his_o depth_n of_o selfe-deceipt_n therefore_o we_o conclude_v these_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v they_o only_o be_v civilise_a three_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a when_o the_o sap_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o and_o no_o contrary_a grace_n infuse_v as_o for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n give_v over_o drunkenness_n yet_o if_o this_o man_n be_v not_o fill_v with_o the_o spirit_n his_o drunkenness_n be_v not_o mortify_v though_o he_o live_v sober_o afterward_o all_o the_o day_n of_o his_o life_n again_o suppose_v a_o man_n give_v over_o his_o intemperate_a anger_n he_o be_v not_o touchy_a nor_o choleric_a nor_o subject_n to_o passion_n yet_o if_o he_o have_v not_o turn_v his_o anger_n against_o himself_o for_o every_o one_o of_o his_o corruption_n which_o break_v out_o against_o god_n his_o anger_n be_v not_o mortify_v suppose_v a_o man_n be_v not_o give_v over_o to_o worldly_a grief_n but_o have_v give_v it_o over_o yet_o if_o his_o grief_n be_v not_o turn_v another_o way_n as_o to_o grieve_v for_o his_o sin_n his_o grief_n be_v not_o mortify_v again_o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v not_o set_v upon_o a_o merry_a pin_n ever_o jest_v or_o tell_v forth_o merry_a tale_n but_o now_o he_o have_v give_v they_o over_o yet_o if_o he_o have_v not_o set_v his_o joy_n on_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o learn_v true_o to_o be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v impossible_a we_o can_v say_v his_o carnal_a mirth_n be_v mortify_v for_o as_o the_o schoolman_n say_v there_o be_v nothing_o corrupt_v till_o another_o thing_n be_v produce_v there_o be_v no_o dissolution_n of_o wood_n until_o it_o be_v turn_v into_o ash_n so_o sin_n be_v never_o take_v away_o nor_o utter_o dissolve_v until_o there_o be_v contrary_a grace_n bring_v into_o the_o heart_n instead_o thereof_o so_o than_o unless_o therebe_n contrary_a grace_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o contrary_n of_o all_o those_o sin_n forego_v they_o be_v but_o only_o civilise_a and_o not_o mortify_v four_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a when_o it_o be_v overwharted_a by_o a_o high_a principle_n as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o have_v the_o flash_n of_o a_o accuse_a conscience_n fly_v daily_o into_o his_o face_n lie_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o many_o horrible_a sin_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o go_v on_o with_o rest_n and_o quietness_n in_o those_o his_o unholy_a course_n wherein_o he_o use_v to_o walk_v he_o may_v forsake_v they_o for_o a_o while_n but_o yet_o he_o can_v mortify_v they_o but_o as_o a_o schoolboy_n that_o play_v the_o truant_n while_o he_o be_v under_o the_o rod_n he_o will_v confess_v his_o fault_n and_o promise_v to_o do_v so_o no_o more_o and_o he_o very_o think_v so_o at_o that_o time_n and_o desire_v hearty_o so_o to_o do_v but_o it_o be_v a_o desire_n that_o he_o be_v provoke_v unto_o for_o fear_n of_o the_o rod_n and_o not_o for_o love_v of_o duty_n for_o when_o once_o the_o rod_n be_v go_v and_o the_o smart_n over_o than_o he_o fall_v to_o his_o own_o old_a truant_v course_n again_o so_o we_o read_v in_o the_o first_o of_o jonah_n that_o when_o the_o mariner_n be_v in_o peril_n of_o their_o life_n than_o every_o one_o of_o they_o can_v call_v upon_o his_o god_n but_o when_o the_o storm_n and_o danger_n be_v over_o they_o quick_o leave_v off_o and_o care_v not_o for_o call_v on_o god_n any_o long_o five_o and_o last_o sin_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v civilise_a by_o god_n give_v of_o positive_a common_a grace_n which_o he_o give_v unto_o wicked_a man_n as_o in_o mat._n 25._o god_n give_v unto_o the_o unprofitable_a servant_n a_o whole_a talon_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v a_o hundred_o and_o sixty_o and_o odd_a pound_n so_o the_o lord_n give_v unto_o wicked_a man_n many_o good_a grace_n as_o softness_n of_o disposition_n lovingnesse_n or_o easy_a to_o be_v entreat_v and_o hereupon_o they_o come_v to_o church_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o perform_v many_o other_o christian_a duty_n yet_o all_o these_o be_v but_o common_a grace_n which_o a_o man_n may_v have_v and_o yet_o his_o sin_n not_o mortify_v and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v your_o member_n etc._n etc._n whence_o observe_v that_o if_o we_o look_v to_o have_v any_o benefitte_n doct._n by_o or_o interest_n in_o christ_n we_o must_v mortify_v all_o our_o sin_n and_o all_o our_o corruption_n as_o if_o the_o apostle_n have_v say_v make_v all_o your_o earthly_a member_n to_o be_v as_o a_o dead_a corpse_n now_o we_o know_v in_o a_o dead_a corpse_n the_o eye_n be_v there_o but_o they_o can_v see_v the_o foot_n be_v there_o also_o but_o they_o want_v strength_n for_o to_o go_v it_o have_v all_o the_o member_n but_o it_o have_v not_o life_n and_o power_n to_o

set_v they_o on_o work_n so_o though_o sin_n be_v in_o you_o still_o yet_o let_v it_o be_v like_o a_o dead_a corpse_n want_v life_n like_o a_o dead_a tyrant_n that_o can_v no_o long_o rage_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v let_v not_o sin_n reign_v in_o your_o mortal_a body_n he_o do_v not_o say_v let_v it_o not_o be_v but_o let_v it_o not_o reign_v sin_n when_o it_o be_v mortify_v be_v like_o a_o dead_a king_n that_o can_v call_v no_o more_o parliament_n but_o a_o man_n may_v do_v for_o he_o what_o he_o list_v because_o his_o strength_n lie_v in_o the_o dust_n if_o christ_n be_v in_o you_o say_v the_o apostle_n the_o body_n be_v dead_a because_o of_o sin_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v life_n for_o righteousness_n sake_n rom._n 8._o 9_o 10._o again_o if_o a_o man_n but_o if_o you_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n by_o the_o spirit_n you_o shall_v live_v so_o than_o it_o be_v plain_a there_o be_v no_o life_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v have_v so_o long_o as_o you_o retain_v your_o sin_n and_o therefore_o sin_n must_v be_v mortify_v first_o because_o christ_n be_v a_o saviour_n and_o reason_n 1_o hence_o he_o be_v call_v jesus_n math._n 1._o 21._o i_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n &_o a_o persecuter_n but_o now_o i_o be_o not_o hence_o then_o be_v the_o faithful_a say_n christ_n come_v to_o save_v sinner_n not_o still_o sin_v no_o before_o paul_n be_v second_o because_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o reason_n 2._o reason_n sin_n and_o grace_n to_o live_v and_o subsist_v in_o one_o subject_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o they_o shall_v ever_o stand_v together_o and_o be_v in_o a_o man_n at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n it_o can_v be_v that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o creature_n can_v have_v the_o life_n of_o a_o swine_n and_o the_o life_n of_o a_o man_n for_o if_o he_o have_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o swine_n he_o can_v have_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n for_o they_o be_v two_o contrary_a distinct_a life_n and_o where_o the_o one_o be_v the_o 1._o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v those_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n god_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o they_o have_v not_o that_o condemnation_n nay_o their_o own_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o so_o that_o that_o man_n who_o any_o condemnation_n either_o from_o god_n or_o from_o his_o own_o conscience_n condemn_v that_o man_n be_v not_o in_o christ_n be_v not_o in_o christ_n he_o can_v never_o be_v hear_v indeed_o a_o man_n conscience_n may_v be_v misinform_v by_o satan_n under_o a_o temptation_n as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o my_o text_n thou_o have_v hear_v my_o voice_n stop_v not_o thy_o ear_n from_o my_o cry_n here_o the_o church_n be_v examine_v their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o they_o be_v hear_v in_o their_o prayer_n but_o be_v under_o a_o temptation_n their_o conscience_n be_v afraid_a that_o god_n hear_v not_o so_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n examine_v it_o and_o it_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o these_o and_o these_o token_n of_o grace_n and_o fruit_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v in_o it_o yet_o their_o conscience_n be_v afraid_a that_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o give_v they_o these_o and_o these_o other_o grace_n that_o they_o want_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v they_o for_o such_o and_o such_o blessing_n i_o mean_v not_o neither_o a_o truce_n of_o conscience_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o truce_n of_o conscience_n in_o wicked_a man_n a_o truce_n may_v be_v between_o mortal_a enemy_n but_o no_o peace_n but_o among_o friend_n wicked_a man_n conscience_n be_v like_o the_o lion_n 1._o king_n 13._o who_o when_o he_o have_v kill_v the_o prophet_n stand_v by_o the_o corpse_n and_o by_o the_o ass_n and_o do_v not_o eat_v the_o body_n nor_o tear_v the_o ass_n so_o a_o wicked_a man_n conscience_n it_o be_v as_o the_o devil_n band-dogge_n or_o roar_a lion_n till_o it_o have_v slay_v the_o sinner_n it_o stand_v stone-still_a and_o seem_v neither_o to_o meddle_v or_o make_v with_o he_o but_o lie_v as_o sear_v or_o then_o know_v that_o the_o lord_n tell_v thou_o if_o thy_o conscience_n say_v peremptory_o that_o thy_o heart_n and_o way_n be_v rot_v and_o unsound_a then_o know_v that_o the_o lord_n tell_v thou_o so_o and_o that_o the_o lord_n say_v so_o to_o thy_o soul_n five_o the_o get_n of_o that_o grace_n that_o a_o man_n pray_v for_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o god_n hear_v his_o prayer_n but_o this_o be_v not_o a_o true_a sign_n always_o but_o with_o distinction_n when_o the_o grace_n give_v and_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n the_o giver_n can_v be_v sever_v than_o it_o be_v a_o true_a sign_n but_o when_o the_o gift_n and_o the_o good_a will_n of_o the_o giver_n may_v be_v sever_v than_o it_o be_v not_o a_o true_a sign_n thou_o may_v pray_v unto_o god_n and_o god_n may_v give_v thou_o many_o temporal_a blessing_n and_o many_o common_a grace_n of_o his_o spirit_n god_n may_v give_v thou_o good_a part_n a_o good_a memory_n he_o may_v give_v thou_o a_o good_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n even_o in_o divers_a thing_n he_o may_v give_v thou_o some_o kind_n of_o humility_n chastity_n civility_n thou_o may_v be_v of_o a_o love_a and_o flexible_a disposition_n so_o he_o may_v give_v thou_o a_o good_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n house_n land_n wife_n and_o child_n etc._n etc._n god_n may_v give_v thou_o all_o these_o and_o yet_o hate_v thou_o and_o never_o hear_v one_o prayer_n thou_o make_v thou_o may_v pray_v for_o a_o thousand_o blessing_n and_o have_v they_o and_o yet_o never_o be_v hear_v so_o long_o as_o the_o good_a will_n of_o the_o giver_n be_v sever_v from_o they_o all_o outward_a blessing_n and_o common_a grace_n may_v be_v sever_v from_o god_n good_a pleasure_n to_o a_o man_n therefore_o in_o temporal_a blessing_n or_o in_o common_a grace_n if_o thou_o will_v know_v whether_o god_n hear_v thou_o or_o no_o know_v whether_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o a_o sanctify_a use_n of_o they_o or_o no._n if_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o many_o common_a grace_n or_o temporal_a blessing_n and_o a_o heart_n to_o use_v they_o to_o his_o glory_n then_o every_o blessing_n thou_o have_v there_o be_v not_o a_o drop_n of_o drink_n nor_o a_o bit_n christ_n oh_o that_o i_o meght_n go_v to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o live_v in_o his_o sin_n and_o slavery_n to_o his_o lust_n he_o pray_v to_o have_v benefit_n by_o christ_n and_o to_o go_v to_o heaven_n in_o spite_n of_o god_n against_o the_o will_n and_o purpose_n of_o god_n god_n have_v predestinate_v that_o all_o that_o shall_v have_v life_n &_o glory_n shall_v be_v make_v conformable_a to_o his_o son_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v holy_a pure_a and_o righteous_a as_o christ_n be_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v lowly_a humble_a and_o mecke_n as_o christ_n be_v our_o own_o conscience_n may_v tell_v
