grace_n it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o convince_v man_n and_o woman_n that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o dishonour_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n if_o they_o seek_v for_o pardon_v in_o a_o negligent_a and_o sluggish_a way_n but_o now_o though_o you_o be_v never_o so_o sensible_a and_o put_v forth_o never_o so_o much_o strength_n in_o seek_v for_o it_o yet_o you_o dishonour_v god_n except_o you_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o such_o a_o high_a thing_n that_o can_v never_o be_v reach_v unto_o but_o through_o the_o mediation_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n 9_o the_o nine_o way_n of_o dishonour_v the_o than_o thou_o can_v imagine_v what_o be_v thou_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o will_v thou_o venture_v on_o sin_n mere_o on_o this_o ground_n because_o thou_o hope_v that_o god_n will_v pardon_v thou_o i_o may_v say_v unto_o thou_o as_o peter_n to_o simon_n magus_n act._n 8.22_o pray_o o_o pray_v to_o god_n that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a this_o thought_n of_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v forgive_v grace_n of_o god_n into_o wantenness_n judas_n 4._o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o such_o there_o that_o profess_v they_o do_v believe_v in_o christ_n mark_v what_o he_o say_v of_o they_o there_o be_v and_o far_o from_o a_o save_a work_n of_o repentance_n therefore_o the_o repentance_n many_o hope_n to_o have_v what_o be_v it_o when_o we_o tell_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n they_o say_v they_o hope_v to_o repent_v what_o do_v they_o mean_v why_o they_o will_v take_v the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n and_o when_o the_o punishment_n come_v they_o will_v be_v sorry_a for_o it_o and_o repent_v of_o it_o the_o ordinary_a way_n to_o put_v man_n off_o from_o this_o plea_n be_v to_o tell_v they_o how_o do_v you_o know_v you_o shall_v live_v or_o that_o your_o heart_n shall_v not_o be_v harden_v but_o suppose_v you_o do_v live_v and_o that_o you_o have_v a_o heart_n to_o do_v as_o you_o say_v yet_o your_o repentance_n may_v fail_v you_o if_o your_o repentance_n be_v no_o other_o than_o that_o which_o come_v for_o sorrow_n of_o sin_n because_o of_o the_o punishment_n it_o will_v fail_v you_o certain_o that_o repentance_n that_o must_v go_v for_o current_n in_o heaven_n be_v of_o another_o nature_n possible_o i_o may_v show_v afterward_o what_o be_v true_a and_o false_a sorrow_n but_o for_o the_o present_a i_o shall_v show_v where_o the_o mistake_n lie_v whosoever_o therefore_o that_o build_v their_o believe_v of_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n mere_o on_o their_o sorrow_n and_o such_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n they_o be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o will_v erect_v a_o great_a building_n and_o lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o it_o in_o a_o quag-mire_n or_o on_o the_o sand_n as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v when_o storm_n come_v the_o building_n fall_v i_o shall_v speak_v hereafter_o to_o those_o that_o build_v on_o the_o sand_n but_o these_o build_v on_o a_o quagmire_n on_o a_o few_o tear_n sorrow_n and_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n they_o have_v upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n this_o building_n will_v fall_v in_o time_n of_o straits_n and_o danger_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o people_n that_o depend_v upon_o sorrow_n never_o have_v peace_n for_o how_o can_v i_o tell_v the_o measure_n of_o sorrow_n i_o be_o to_o have_v before_o peace_n be_v speak_v and_o then_o if_o they_o feel_v not_o sorrow_n they_o be_v question_v again_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a thing_n to_o lay_v the_o hope_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n upon_o our_o own_o sorrow_n where_o or_o how_o then_o shall_v we_o lay_v our_o hope_n why_o upon_o the_o sorrow_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o you_o shall_v find_v the_o sure_a ground_n there_o may_v be_v some_o mistake_n there_o too_o but_o for_o the_o present_a i_o shall_v not_o stay_v on_o that_o we_o must_v look_v ten_o thousand_o time_n more_o at_o the_o sorrow_n of_o christ_n than_o at_o our_o own_o sorrow_n and_o therefore_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v trouble_v and_o you_o look_v for_o mercy_n depend_v more_o ten_o thousand_o time_n on_o the_o sorrow_n of_o christ_n than_o on_o all_o your_o own_o sorrow_n for_o your_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n can_v satisfy_v god_n justice_n and_o that_o that_o must_v be_v a_o ground_n of_o hope_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o my_o sin_n must_v be_v something_o that_o must_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n for_o though_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o sorrow_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o satisfy_v god_n justice_n and_o consider_v further_o true_a sorrow_n rather_o follow_v the_o work_n of_o justification_n than_o prece_v it_o as_o thus_o i_o be_o not_o therefore_o pardon_v because_o i_o mourn_v but_o because_o i_o be_o pardon_v therefore_o i_o come_v to_o mourn_v so_o stand_v the_o truth_n in_o divinity_n in_o point_n of_o justification_n and_o repentance_n you_o pervert_v the_o order_n if_o you_o think_v because_o you_o mourn_v and_o be_v a_o little_a sorrowful_a that_o therefore_o you_o shall_v be_v pardon_v the_o rend_v when_o there_o be_v three_o or_o four_o quarter_n behind_o or_o may_v be_v two_o or_o three_o year_n if_o you_o shall_v think_v to_o pay_v the_o rent_n of_o two_o or_o three_o year_n with_o bring_v the_o last_o quarter_n it_o will_v be_v account_v a_o foolish_a conceit_n so_o will_v it_o be_v if_o with_o god_n you_o shall_v think_v the_o duty_n you_o do_v at_o present_a shall_v satisfy_v for_o all_o the_o arrearage_n you_o have_v run_v into_o for_o time_n past_a you_o do_v not_o understand_v god_n way_n if_o you_o think_v that_o god_n will_v be_v satisfy_v for_o all_o that_o be_v he_o be_v merciful_a and_o not_o will_v that_o man_n shall_v perish_v yet_o the_o scripture_n reveal_v clear_o to_o we_o that_o notwithstanding_o god_n be_v gracious_a and_o merciful_a yet_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n perish_v in_o their_o sin_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o clear_a than_o this_o that_o most_o people_n in_o the_o world_n do_v perish_v and_o therefore_o to_o say_v god_n be_v merciful_a be_v not_o enough_o you_o may_v be_v sorry_a for_o sin_n reform_v and_o say_v god_n be_v merciful_a and_o yet_o perish_v if_o these_o three_o be_v enough_o what_o need_v the_o slight_a thought_n man_n have_v about_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n many_o time_n why_o they_o be_v hold_v so_o long_o under_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n when_o god_n begin_v to_o work_v upon_o they_o and_o stir_v the_o conscience_n and_o lay_v the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n home_o upon_o it_o how_o long_o be_v they_o before_o they_o can_v have_v any_o assurance_n of_o pardon_n and_o in_o just_a judgement_n it_o be_v so_o because_o they_o have_v slight_a thought_n before_o of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n i_o remember_v it_o be_v story_v of_o pompey_n when_o one_o of_o his_o captain_n come_v they_o as_o many_o think_v they_o can_v do_v great_a thing_n with_o a_o word_n speak_v as_o if_o all_o must_v be_v at_o their_o beck_n present_o but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o it_o they_o fail_v to_o they_o they_o will_v do_v as_o the_o servant_n of_o benhadad_n 1_o king_n 20.33_o diligent_o observe_v if_o any_o thing_n will_v come_v from_o he_o and_o hasty_o catch_v at_o it_o they_o watch_v that_o if_o any_o thing_n do_v come_v from_o he_o that_o do_v make_v any_o way_n to_o that_o which_o they_o seek_v after_o and_o do_v hasty_o catch_v at_o it_o so_o do_v a_o soul_n understand_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n what_o a_o great_a work_n it_o be_v he_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o have_v slight_a thought_n of_o it_o that_o he_o will_v come_v clothe_v in_o sackcloth_n and_o every_o in_o they_o and_o scarce_o know_v what_o they_o be_v but_o i_o hope_v there_o be_v many_o other_o that_o have_v knowledge_n of_o a_o eternal_a state_n to_o be_v between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n i_o hope_v i_o speak_v thing_n will_v be_v very_o precious_a to_o they_o yea_o i_o say_v unto_o many_o of_o you_o for_o while_o i_o be_o in_o this_o argument_n i_o be_o speak_v to_o such_o as_o have_v have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n fall_v upon_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o have_v make_v it_o the_o great_a business_n of_o their_o life_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n to_o know_v how_o term_n be_v between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n to_o know_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o they_o for_o their_o everlasting_a estate_n i_o know_v abundance_n of_o people_n scarce_o ever_o call_v these_o thing_n in_o question_n to_o who_o these_o rule_n will_v be_v of_o little_a or_o no_o use_n at_o all_o but_o if_o i_o speak_v to_o some_o or_o any_o one_o trouble_a soul_n to_o help_v and_o direct_v they_o though_o i_o do_v no_o good_a to_o other_o i_o shall_v think_v my_o time_n well_o spend_v wherefore_o then_o in_o your_o examination_n ever_o carry_v this_o with_o you_o that_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n certain_o that_o many_o be_v so_o trouble_v in_o their_o conscience_n about_o their_o eternal_a estate_n it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n because_o they_o look_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n if_o they_o find_v any_o corruption_n stir_v and_o break_v forth_o and_o temptation_n strong_a upon_o they_o they_o think_v present_o all_o be_v naught_o and_o that_o god_n will_v never_o accept_v of_o they_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n if_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o least_o stir_v of_o corruption_n it_o be_v enough_o to_o cast_v the_o soul_n down_o into_o eternal_a horror_n as_o adam_n though_o he_o have_v never_o so_o much_o goodness_n before_o by_o the_o image_n of_o god_n upon_o he_o yet_o one_o sin_n eternal_o cast_v he_o if_o there_o have_v not_o come_v in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n now_o though_o people_n will_v acknowledge_v there_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n yet_o upon_o the_o stir_n of_o their_o corruption_n they_o carry_v it_o as_o that_o it_o serve_v for_o no_o other_o use_n than_o if_o they_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o covenant_n of_o grace_n at_o all_o now_o what_o a_o dishonour_n be_v this_o to_o the_o riches_n of_o god_n goodness_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n that_o tell_v we_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v judge_v for_o our_o eternal_a estate_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o that_o must_v be_v our_o judge_n for_o our_o eternal_a condition_n be_v our_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n and_o tell_v we_o also_o that_o god_n accept_v of_o the_o uprightness_n and_o the_o sincerity_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o that_o the_o want_n of_o perfection_n shall_v never_o damn_v thy_o soul_n he_o that_o stand_v before_o the_o lord_n to_o make_v atonement_n and_o to_o be_v our_o advocate_n to_o plead_v with_o the_o father_n for_o we_o he_o it_o be_v that_o must_v be_v the_o judge_n of_o our_o eternal_a estate_n and_o therefore_o when_o i_o set_v myself_o before_o the_o lord_n i_o consider_v that_o i_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o he_o in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n suppose_v i_o find_v and_o feel_v such_o and_o such_o corruption_n and_o weakness_n in_o i_o be_v it_o not_o possible_a that_o my_o estate_n be_v happy_a by_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n collect_v yourselves_o and_o say_v why_o do_v i_o determine_v of_o my_o everlasting_a condition_n have_v i_o to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o can_v these_o imperfection_n stand_v with_o it_o why_o do_v i_o make_v such_o conclusion_n that_o my_o state_n be_v naught_o because_o of_o the_o stir_n of_o such_o and_o such_o corruption_n the_o doubt_n and_o fear_n of_o most_o christian_n arise_v from_o hence_o because_o they_o have_v not_o a_o clear_a understanding_n of_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n will_v so_o satisfy_v the_o conscience_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n so_o as_o a_o clear_a understanding_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n many_o people_n cry_v out_o of_o the_o preacher_n that_o they_o disquiet_v and_o trouble_v the_o heart_n of_o people_n by_o their_o preach_a the_o truth_n be_v no_o preacher_n occasion_n so_o much_o the_o trouble_n and_o perplexity_n of_o conscience_n as_o those_o that_o
it_o now_o for_o this_o be_v our_o time_n and_o this_o be_v the_o great_a work_n of_o our_o life_n not_o to_o cumber_v ourselves_o about_o many_o thing_n but_o about_o this_o one_o thing_n to_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a this_o be_v the_o great_a work_n to_o seek_v to_o secure_v this_o blessing_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o in_o the_o obtain_n of_o it_o we_o obtain_v all_o blessing_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v our_o chief_a care_n and_o we_o ought_v to_o lay_v out_o our_o chief_a strength_n and_o endeavour_n in_o seek_v of_o it_o and_o if_o god_n will_v be_v please_v to_o put_v his_o hand_n to_o your_o heart_n and_o turn_v the_o stream_n of_o your_o thought_n and_o endeavour_n the_o very_a turn_n of_o your_o heart_n after_o this_o business_n be_v a_o great_a mercy_n there_o be_v so_o much_o blessedness_n in_o it_o as_o not_o only_o the_o obtain_n of_o it_o but_o the_o very_a motion_n of_o the_o heart_n this_o way_n be_v worth_a all_o the_o world_n in_o act._n 2._o we_o read_v there_o be_v many_o thousand_o that_o have_v their_o heart_n prick_v at_o hear_v the_o word_n preach_v and_o they_o cry_v out_o man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v to_o be_v save_v o_o that_o there_o be_v a_o disposition_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o cry_v thus_o we_o see_v it_o be_v our_o blessedness_n if_o we_o have_v it_o and_o if_o we_o have_v it_o not_o we_o be_v all_o curse_a for_o ever_o what_o shall_v we_o do_v to_o get_v it_o mar._n 10.17_o we_o read_v of_o one_o come_v run_v after_o christ_n say_v what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v o_o that_o your_o heart_n be_v now_o in_o such_o a_o frame_n to_o come_v run_v after_o christ_n say_v what_o shall_v we_o do_v that_o that_o we_o be_v do_v for_o god_n like_v well_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o work_n of_o common_a gift_n though_o they_o be_v not_o save_v and_o to_o eternal_a life_n yet_o god_n like_v the_o exercise_n of_o they_o so_o far_o as_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n good_a and_o commend_v they_o when_o that_o young_a man_n come_v to_o christ_n mar._n 10.21_o christ_n look_v upon_o he_o and_o love_v he_o though_o not_o with_o such_o a_o love_n as_o to_o save_v he_o and_o bring_v he_o to_o eternal_a life_n yet_o god_n do_v discover_v love_n to_o such_o a_o one_o therefore_o it_o be_v to_o some_o purpose_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v put_v himself_o on_o do_v what_o he_o can_v if_o it_o be_v only_o for_o that_o 2._o it_o be_v to_o some_o purpose_n that_o the_o heart_n be_v stir_v after_o god_n and_o christ_n because_o hereby_o we_o shall_v evidence_n that_o we_o be_v not_o so_o negligent_a of_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o eternal_a life_n as_o we_o be_v before_o 3._o it_o be_v to_o some_o purpose_n for_o in_o the_o stir_n of_o the_o common_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n god_n many_o time_n come_v in_o with_o save_v work_n for_o god_n work_v not_o upon_o man_n as_o upon_o stock_n or_o stone_n but_o god_n put_v they_o on_o by_o stir_v up_o the_o common_a work_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o at_o that_o time_n when_o they_o be_v most_o in_o stir_v it_o be_v god_n usual_a way_n to_o come_v in_o with_o the_o save_a work_n of_o his_o spirit_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o to_o no_o purpose_n that_o we_o be_v put_v on_o poor_a creature_n to_o do_v what_o they_o can_v the_o second_o caution_n be_v this_o that_o whatsoever_o any_o one_o do_v in_o seek_v after_o christ_n before_o he_o have_v union_n with_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v reckon_v on_o as_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n or_o a_o gospel-work_n there_o be_v no_o preparatory_a work_n for_o the_o receive_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n though_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o we_o must_v follow_v after_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n now_o that_o that_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n sanctify_v he_o that_o have_v it_o and_o follow_v upon_o our_o union_n with_o christ_n though_o god_n use_v to_o carry_v on_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o legal_a terror_n humiliation_n and_o the_o like_a yet_o these_o be_v not_o the_o work_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o this_o may_v help_v many_o a_o poor_a soul_n about_o terror_n of_o conscience_n and_o humiliation_n that_o be_v trouble_v that_o they_o never_o have_v those_o degree_n as_o other_o have_v why_o as_o they_o do_v not_o prepare_v and_o fit_v thou_o for_o christ_n so_o the_o want_n of_o they_o be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o the_o receive_n of_o christ_n the_o three_o caution_n be_v this_o that_o follow_v on_o the_o other_o that_o though_o you_o put_v yourselves_o upon_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n to_o the_o receive_n of_o christ_n yet_o take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o any_o of_o those_o preparatory_a work_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o danger_n in_o that_o many_o soul_n mistake_v and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v it_o be_v in_o this_o the_o rest_a in_o something_o that_o they_o have_v do_v it_o may_v be_v god_n have_v awaken_v their_o conscience_n and_o they_o fall_v upon_o work_v upon_o humble_v and_o reform_v themselves_o and_o here_o they_o rest_v but_o this_o be_v a_o mistake_n you_o must_v not_o rest_v until_o you_o find_v you_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o until_o there_o be_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o your_o soul_n the_o work_n be_v not_o therefore_o do_v because_o you_o be_v humble_v and_o reform_v and_o run_v another_o course_n to_o what_o you_o do_v before_o for_o rom._n 9.16_o it_o be_v not_o of_o he_o that_o will_v nor_o of_o he_o that_o run_v but_o of_o god_n that_o show_v mercy_n not_o of_o he_o that_o will_v that_o be_v that_o have_v some_o good_a affection_n to_o it_o nor_o of_o he_o that_o run_v that_o be_v though_o his_o endeavour_n be_v never_o so_o strong_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o of_o he_o neither_o many_o think_v they_o have_v peace_n in_o their_o soul_n upon_o their_o good_a desire_n and_o endeavour_n when_o their_o heart_n be_v mighty_o stir_v and_o they_o wonderful_o enlarge_v than_o they_o make_v no_o question_n but_o all_o be_v do_v and_o they_o quiet_v their_o heart_n with_o that_o and_o think_v there_o be_v no_o further_a work_n to_o be_v do_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o not_o of_o he_o that_o will_v nor_o of_o he_o that_o run_v but_o of_o god_n that_o show_v mercy_n though_o we_o must_v will_n and_o we_o must_v run_v yet_o there_o may_v be_v run_v and_o strive_v to_o enter_v in_o and_o yet_o not_o enter_v this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a point_n to_o let_v we_o see_v all_o of_o we_o what_o need_v we_o have_v of_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o pardon_v of_o our_o sin_n four_o though_o god_n do_v not_o tie_v himself_o to_o come_v in_o to_o pardon_v upon_o these_o preparatory_a work_n go_v before_o yet_o it_o be_v worthy_a of_o the_o utmost_a endeavour_n of_o any_o soul_n in_o the_o world_n that_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o the_o obtain_n of_o it_o though_o god_n tie_v not_o himself_o to_o give_v pardon_n on_o those_o work_n yet_o there_o be_v enough_o in_o it_o to_o require_v the_o utmost_a endeavour_n of_o any_o one_o to_o be_v lay_v out_o can_v we_o do_v ten_o thousand_o time_n more_o than_o we_o can_v even_o the_o very_a possibility_n of_o obtain_v pardon_n be_v worth_a the_o call_n forth_o of_o all_o our_o strength_n know_v that_o the_o very_a possibility_n of_o have_v sin_n pardon_v be_v enough_o to_o set_v all_o
