side_n the_o gout_n in_o the_o foot_n and_o such_o like_a of_o the_o former_a kind_n there_o especial_o be_v three_o whereof_o the_o first_o may_v be_v call_v security_n or_o impenitency_n the_o second_o worldliness_n the_o three_o distrust_n for_o the_o first_o although_o total_a impenitency_n can_v be_v in_o a_o man_n regenerate_v for_o where_o faith_n &_o repentance_n be_v once_o true_o wrought_v by_o god_n spirit_n there_o they_o abide_v for_o ever_o yet_o whensoever_o he_o continue_v in_o commit_v gross_a sin_n contrary_a to_o his_o own_o knowledge_n and_o conscience_n as_o the_o faithful_a sometime_o do_v than_o he_o be_v impenitent_a in_o respect_n of_o those_o sin_n indeed_o usual_o when_o he_o first_o begin_v to_o commit_v sin_n he_o do_v straight_o way_n by_o repentance_n recover_v his_o former_a state_n fly_v to_o god_n in_o humble_a prayer_n for_o pardon_n of_o it_o and_o for_o grace_n whereby_o to_o resist_v it_o this_o he_o obtain_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n who_o as_o the_o father_n of_o the_o prodigal_a young_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n be_v more_o ready_a to_o give_v pardon_n and_o grace_n than_o he_o be_v to_o ask_v it_o and_o therefore_o he_o meet_v &_o in_o a_o manner_n prevent_v he_o with_o it_o yet_o sometime_o afterward_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o he_o fall_v into_o the_o same_o sâ—n_n and_o remember_v how_o late_o he_o be_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n recover_v out_o of_o it_o be_v backward_o and_o unwilling_a to_o go_v to_o god_n for_o help_v as_o before_o either_o be_v ashamed_a to_o ask_v that_o again_o which_o he_o so_o late_o obtain_v and_o so_o careless_o lose_v or_o perhaps_o despair_a of_o attain_v it_o although_o he_o shall_v ask_v it_o or_o last_o be_v so_o inveigle_v and_o besot_v with_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o sin_n that_o he_o resolve_v with_o himself_o to_o continue_v in_o it_o and_o so_o think_v and_o that_o true_o that_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a or_o rather_o impossible_a for_o he_o to_o repent_v of_o that_o sin_n wherein_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o continue_v whereupon_o he_o go_v on_o from_o day_n to_o day_n from_o year_n to_o year_n in_o his_o sin_n never_o call_v himself_o to_o account_v for_o it_o and_o scarce_o once_o think_v of_o leave_v it_o till_o at_o length_n he_o become_v so_o benumb_v and_o hard-hearted_a in_o it_o that_o he_o can_v not_o repent_v of_o it_o though_o he_o will_v he_o can_v not_o pour_v forth_o tear_n of_o sorrow_n and_o grief_n as_o he_o do_v at_o the_o first_o thus_o he_o affect_v in_o his_o conscience_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o sin_n do_v in_o a_o manner_n give_v over_o all_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a exercise_n as_o the_o hear_n meditate_v read_v and_o confer_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n public_a &_o private_a prayer_n and_o all_o other_o mean_v serve_v for_o edification_n use_v they_o not_o in_o conscience_n but_o in_o hypocrisy_n &_o in_o outward_a show_n be_v cold_a yea_o heavy_a lumpish_a and_o dead_a in_o all_o such_o action_n if_o it_o so_o fall_v forth_o that_o his_o conscience_n be_v stir_v up_o by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n by_o some_o judgement_n or_o any_o other_o mean_n so_o that_o he_o purpose_v and_o desire_v to_o repent_v and_o to_o leave_v his_o sin_n yet_o he_o find_v himself_o so_o untoward_a to_o this_o work_n and_o so_o hard_o heart_v unable_a to_o call_v upon_o god_n in_o hope_n of_o be_v hear_v that_o he_o give_v it_o over_o at_o the_o first_o and_o so_o be_v further_a of_o then_o he_o be_v this_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o impenitency_n the_o which_o that_o it_o be_v a_o disease_n spread_v itself_o over_o the_o whole_a soul_n of_o man_n we_o can_v not_o doubt_v it_o may_v well_o be_v compare_v to_o that_o sickness_n wherein_o man_n lie_v for_o dead_a for_o many_o hour_n together_o so_o that_o it_o can_v hardly_o be_v perceive_v that_o they_o draw_v breath_n it_o come_v of_o the_o commit_n of_o and_o yield_v to_o great_a and_o heinous_a sin_n such_o whereof_o a_o man_n conscience_n tell_v he_o that_o they_o can_v possible_o stand_v with_o the_o fear_n and_o service_n of_o god_n but_o that_o of_o necessity_n the_o one_o must_v be_v leave_v off_o and_o lay_v aside_o the_o cure_n of_o it_o consist_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n of_o repentance_n for_o in_o it_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v almost_o to_o that_o estate_n wherein_o he_o be_v before_o regeneration_n so_o that_o now_o as_o it_o be_v hebrues_n 6.1_o he_o must_v lay_v again_o the_o foundation_n of_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n he_o must_v enter_v into_o a_o serious_a consideration_n of_o that_o fearful_a estate_n wherein_o he_o be_v whereof_o it_o will_v certain_o follow_v that_o he_o will_v never_o please_v himself_o in_o it_o or_o be_v content_a till_o he_o find_v some_o remedy_n the_o which_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n by_o earnest_a prayer_n by_o avoid_v all_o occasion_n of_o those_o sin_n which_o have_v thus_o prevail_v over_o he_o and_o by_o force_v himself_o although_o most_o untoward_a to_o the_o daily_a use_n of_o all_o holy_a &_o spiritual_a exercise_n whereby_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n may_v be_v kindle_v &_o adultery_n and_o murder_n fall_v into_o this_o estate_n and_o therein_o continue_v for_o some_o time_n and_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v recover_v out_o of_o it_o as_o we_o read_v ps._n 51.10_o create_v in_o i_o a_o clean_a heart_n o_o god_n and_o renew_v a_o right_a spirit_n within_o i_o cast_v i_o not_o from_o thy_o presence_n and_o take_v not_o thy_o holy_a spirit_n from_o i_o restore_v i_o to_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n and_o establish_v i_o with_o thy_o spirit_n sect._n 5._o the_o second_o general_a disease_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v worldliness_n which_o be_v a_o immoderate_a desire_n of_o get_v have_v and_o enjoy_v worldly_a pleasure_n it_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n call_v covetousness_n and_o say_v to_o be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a that_o be_v that_o which_o work_v in_o man_n decrease_v of_o all_o the_o part_n of_o holiness_n and_o so_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n for_o it_o steal_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n from_o god_n make_v he_o set_v all_o his_o care_n study_n and_o to_o bend_v the_o whole_a course_n of_o his_o life_n on_o earthly_a pleasure_n 1._o timo._n 6.10_o they_o that_o will_v be_v rich_a fall_v into_o temptation_n and_o snare_n into_o many_o foolish_a and_o noisome_a lust_n which_o drown_v man_n â—n_a perdition_n for_o the_o desire_n of_o money_n be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a which_o while_o some_o have_v lust_v after_o they_o have_v err_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o pierce_v themselves_o through_o with_o many_o sorrow_n as_o 2._o tim._n 4.10_o he_o complain_v of_o demas_n that_o he_o have_v forsake_v he_o and_o embrace_v the_o present_a world_n this_o be_v the_o common_a disease_n of_o this_o age_n wherein_o those_o who_o fear_n and_o serve_v god_n be_v almost_o general_o far_a more_o addict_v to_o the_o world_n then_o be_v meet_v divide_v themselves_o in_o a_o manner_n betwixt_o god_n and_o mammon_n be_v far_o more_o greedy_a in_o desire_v careful_a in_o seek_v wretched_a in_o keep_v and_o light_n in_o use_v earthly_a pleasure_n then_o in_o reason_n they_o shall_v be_v who_o know_v they_o to_o be_v vain_a and_o momentany_a &_o who_o do_v certain_o hope_v and_o look_v for_o eternal_a glory_n and_o pleasure_n in_o heaven_n by_o the_o which_o mean_n they_o become_v faint_a and_o weak_a in_o regard_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n for_o first_o the_o care_n and_o time_n which_o shall_v be_v bestow_v in_o preserve_v and_o increase_n it_o be_v bestow_v in_o get_v worldly_a pleasure_n second_o the_o mind_n be_v besot_v and_o even_o overwhelm_v by_o the_o continual_a and_o immoderate_a use_n of_o they_o three_o it_o make_v they_o lay_v aside_o the_o performance_n of_o christian_n duty_n of_o love_n belong_v both_o to_o god_n &_o to_o their_o brother_n by_o the_o diligent_a use_n whereof_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v strengthen_v in_o godliness_n so_o it_o be_v weaken_v by_o the_o neglect_n of_o they_o and_o last_o the_o greedy_a desire_n of_o worldly_a thing_n make_v man_n use_v many_o unlawful_a mean_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o they_o and_o not_o to_o be_v so_o careful_a in_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n as_o they_o shall_v be_v this_o disease_n of_o the_o soul_n
and_o indifferent_a matter_n wherein_o they_o may_v much_o better_o agree_v and_o join_v with_o they_o another_o cause_n be_v the_o contempt_n either_o true_a or_o suppose_v of_o unregenerat_a man_n as_o of_o those_o who_o be_v in_o a_o most_o wretched_a estate_n for_o often_o they_o who_o profess_v this_o regeneration_n do_v either_o think_v too_o hardly_o and_o uncharitable_o or_o else_o utter_v unreasonable_o and_o indiscreete_o what_o they_o true_o think_v of_o other_o yea_o although_o they_o do_v not_o offend_v in_o these_o respect_n yet_o man_n of_o lewd_a behaviour_n and_o dissolute_a life_n will_v &_o not_o without_o cause_n think_v that_o those_o who_o live_v just_o and_o upright_o have_v a_o base_a opinion_n of_o they_o by_o the_o which_o mean_n it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o their_o affection_n shall_v be_v alienate_v from_o they_o last_o even_o those_o who_o have_v receive_v grace_n from_o god_n much_o more_o they_o who_o make_v profession_n of_o that_o grace_n which_o they_o have_v not_o have_v in_o they_o many_o want_n and_o infirmity_n yea_o sometime_o great_a vice_n and_o sin_n by_o the_o which_o they_o do_v just_o incur_v the_o offence_n of_o man_n by_o these_o and_o such_o other_o mean_n it_o come_v often_o to_o pass_v thaâ—_n carnal_a man_n conceive_v such_o a_o mislike_n of_o those_o that_o profess_v regeneration_n that_o they_o can_v abide_v to_o hear_v of_o it_o or_o of_o any_o mean_n tend_v unto_o it_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o this_o hindrance_n it_o be_v the_o part_n of_o all_o those_o who_o have_v receive_v this_o great_a favour_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n to_o be_v renew_a by_o his_o spirit_n to_o use_v all_o diligence_n in_o not_o give_v offence_n either_o to_o jew_n or_o gentile_n to_o christian_a or_o infidel_n to_o one_o or_o other_o and_o so_o not_o to_o make_v so_o excellent_a a_o thing_n as_o regeneration_n be_v it_o be_v the_o only_a miraculous_a work_n of_o god_n which_o have_v continual_a place_n in_o the_o church_n to_o be_v evil_o speak_v off_o but_o forsomuch_o as_o when_o they_o have_v do_v all_o that_o they_o can_v offence_n will_v be_v take_v where_o it_o be_v not_o give_v and_o for_o that_o we_o have_v not_o to_o deal_v in_o this_o treatise_n with_o man_n already_o regenerate_v that_o we_o shall_v show_v how_o they_o may_v live_v without_o give_v offence_n therefore_o leave_v they_o we_o will_v come_v to_o the_o unregenerat_a man_n who_o be_v offend_v by_o they_o and_o by_o this_o offence_n hinder_v from_o seek_v regeneration_n to_o who_o we_o be_v to_o commend_v that_o wisdom_n which_o stay_v man_n from_o be_v carry_v headlong_o in_o affection_n against_o any_o person_n or_o cause_n whatsoever_o but_o especial_o against_o those_o thing_n which_o have_v in_o they_o any_o likelihood_n of_o religion_n as_o gamaliel_n appease_v the_o jew_n act._n 5_o 38.39_o yea_o that_o wisdom_n which_o tech_v we_o to_o 〈◊〉_d a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o person_n and_o â—he_v cause_n of_o man_n and_o not_o suffer_v our_o judgement_n 〈◊〉_d weigh_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o one_o to_o 〈◊〉_d blind_a and_o forestall_v by_o anger_n love_n hatred_n or_o any_o other_o grievous_a sin_n yea_o even_o they_o who_o god_n have_v make_v partaker_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o in_o these_o respect_n to_o condemn_v or_o reject_v that_o religion_n which_o any_o man_n do_v profess_v but_o to_o give_v to_o man_n that_o gentle_a reproof_n which_o their_o sin_n do_v deserve_v and_o to_o give_v to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o man_n that_o reverence_n and_o practice_v which_o belonge_v unto_o it_o sect._n 8._o thus_o we_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n remoove_v the_o hindrance_n of_o regeneration_n which_o keep_v man_n in_o their_o natural_a sinfulness_n and_o security_n wherein_o they_o be_v before_o and_o make_v this_o our_o carnal_a nicodemus_n desirous_a of_o grace_n whereof_o before_o he_o be_v altogether_o ignorant_a and_o careless_a it_o remain_v that_o he_o put_v this_o his_o desire_n in_o execution_n and_o that_o without_o delay_n not_o defer_v it_o from_o one_o day_n or_o time_n of_o his_o life_n to_o another_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o appoint_a season_n as_o foâ—_n all_o other_o action_n so_o also_o for_o this_o the_o â—hich_v if_o he_o let_v slip_v he_o shall_v either_o not_o desire_v to_o have_v it_o or_o not_o have_v it_o although_o he_o do_v desire_v it_o but_o man_n will_v here_o object_v and_o say_v may_v we_o not_o at_o any_o time_n both_o seek_v and_o find_v grace_n have_v not_o god_n say_v â—n_v his_o word_n that_o at_o what_o time_n soever_o a_o sinner_n repent_v of_o his_o sin_n he_o will_v put_v they_o all_o out_o of_o his_o remembrance_n we_o answer_v that_o god_n indeed_o may_v always_o be_v find_v if_o he_o be_v seek_v as_o he_o ought_v to_o be_v but_o he_o can_v always_o be_v seek_v and_o therefore_o not_o find_v for_o first_o we_o know_v that_o this_o our_o purpose_n of_o seek_v god_n may_v be_v prevent_v and_o make_v frustrate_a by_o death_n the_o which_o be_v the_o full_a and_o last_o period_n of_o all_o the_o desire_n and_o endeavour_n of_o man_n god_n indeed_o be_v in_o the_o low_a hell_n as_o much_o as_o in_o the_o high_a heaven_n but_o in_o the_o grave_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n of_o sin_n yea_o no_o hope_n or_o desire_v of_o grace_n beside_o let_v we_o suppose_v that_o this_o carnal_a man_n that_o defer_v his_o repentance_n in_o this_o sort_n as_o he_o make_v his_o account_n although_o sometime_o he_o come_v short_a of_o his_o reckon_n do_v by_o the_o long_a suffering_n of_o god_n prolong_v his_o day_n how_o know_v he_o that_o he_o shall_v always_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o the_o mean_n of_o regeneration_n without_o the_o which_o god_n do_v not_o use_v to_o work_v it_o yea_o if_o he_o have_v life_n and_o all_o other_o thing_n needful_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v he_o so_o foolish_a and_o ignorant_a of_o his_o natural_a disposition_n as_o to_o imagine_v that_o this_o desire_n of_o grace_n and_o resolution_n of_o seek_v god_n will_v continue_v for_o ever_o or_o for_o any_o time_n if_o it_o be_v not_o put_v in_o practice_n this_o be_v in_o no_o wise_a to_o be_v suppose_v for_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a truth_n that_o man_n general_o and_o natural_o as_o they_o grow_v in_o strength_n wit_n and_o worldly_a wisdom_n so_o they_o grow_v in_o sinfulness_n atheism_n infidelity_n and_o hardness_n of_o heart_n be_v every_o day_n further_o and_o further_o off_o from_o seek_v god_n for_o as_o drunkard_n do_v by_o drink_v not_o quench_v their_o thirst_n and_o satisfy_v their_o appetite_n but_o increase_v the_o burn_a thirst_n of_o their_o body_n and_o the_o insatiable_a intemperance_n of_o their_o mind_n so_o all_o other_o worldly_a pleasure_n the_o long_o they_o be_v enjoy_v the_o more_o greedy_o they_o be_v desire_v and_o more_o obstinate_o prefer_v before_o god_n and_o spiritual_a grace_n as_o the_o prophet_n say_v jere._n 13.23_o that_o it_o be_v as_o easy_a for_o a_o aethiopian_n to_o change_v the_o colour_n of_o his_o skin_n or_o for_o a_o libard_n to_o shake_v off_o the_o spot_n of_o his_o skin_n as_o for_o those_o to_o do_v good_a who_o be_v by_o a_o long_a custom_n teach_v the_o way_n and_o wile_n of_o sin_v yea_o there_o be_v far_o less_o hope_n of_o their_o repentance_n and_o regeneration_n who_o have_v sometime_o this_o purpose_n of_o turn_v to_o god_n do_v neglect_n and_o loose_v it_o then_o of_o they_o who_o never_o once_o think_v of_o any_o such_o matter_n for_o it_o be_v a_o very_a unlike_o matter_n that_o a_o man_n will_v in_o his_o age_n set_v his_o affection_n on_o spiritual_a thing_n which_o he_o reject_v and_o condemn_v before_o when_o as_o he_o be_v less_o addict_v to_o the_o world_n and_o to_o sin_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o in_o any_o age_n except_o infancy_n both_o god_n may_v work_v regeneration_n in_o man_n and_o man_n repentance_n in_o himself_o yet_o as_o the_o bough_n of_o a_o tree_n be_v by_o the_o growth_n of_o many_o year_n become_v stiff_a and_o strong_a be_v now_o far_o more_o easy_o break_v then_o bow_v so_o for_o the_o most_o part_n man_n of_o age_n experience_n and_o worldly_a wisdom_n do_v soon_o loose_v their_o life_n then_o leave_v their_o carnal_a desire_n which_o they_o have_v so_o careful_o nourish_v and_o strengthen_v all_o their_o life_n time_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v and_o consider_v that_o as_o all_o other_o thing_n under_o the_o sun_n so_o also_o this_o repentance_n have_v a_o appoint_a season_n which_o be_v in_o no_o case_n to_o
that_o rest_a place_n which_o in_o that_o place_n be_v call_v abraham_n bosom_n or_o rather_o as_o long_o as_o it_o be_v but_o in_o the_o way_n towards_o it_o it_o do_v often_o look_v back_o to_o sin_n yea_o return_n and_o go_v back_o again_o even_o till_o it_o come_v to_o death_n door_n and_o the_o gate_n of_o hell_n but_o there_o it_o stay_v have_v no_o entrance_n grant_v yea_o in_o truth_n desire_v none_o and_o that_o we_o may_v return_v to_o our_o accustom_a similitude_n the_o soul_n of_o man_n have_v in_o it_o two_o contrary_a quality_n sin_n and_o holiness_n of_o the_o which_o as_o next_o place_n to_o see_v how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v heal_v and_o remove_v wherein_o there_o be_v great_a care_n and_o diligence_n to_o be_v use_v both_o for_o that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n require_v the_o inward_a purity_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o the_o outward_a purity_n of_o life_n as_o also_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o fall_v into_o great_a and_o open_a sin_n wherein_o this_o weak_a christian_n be_v who_o although_o for_o a_o time_n he_o walk_v upright_o in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n yet_o he_o be_v like_a enough_o to_o stumble_v and_o fall_v when_o wicked_a be_v tempt_v to_o think_v and_o say_v that_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o serve_v god_n and_o thus_o many_o other_o godly_a man_n feel_v and_o see_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o conversion_n that_o god_n work_v strange_a &_o wonderful_a thing_n in_o they_o and_o for_o they_o promise_v to_o themselves_o the_o like_a strange_a experiment_n of_o god_n power_n and_o love_n towards_o they_o the_o which_o when_o as_o they_o do_v not_o not_o come_v to_o pass_v according_a to_o their_o expectation_n all_o go_v on_o in_o a_o ordinary_a course_n &_o happen_v to_o one_o as_o to_o another_o man_n this_o proceed_v from_o that_o self_n love_n which_o be_v natural_o in_o every_o man_n yea_o in_o every_o live_a thing_n by_o the_o which_o he_o be_v move_v to_o desire_v and_o to_o endeavour_n of_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o know_v that_o by_o it_o we_o be_v make_v unjust_a and_o unrighteous_a not_o only_o by_o a_o sinful_a and_o wicked_a life_n but_o even_o by_o one_o sinful_a action_n not_o only_o by_o great_a and_o grievous_a crime_n but_o even_o by_o the_o least_o offence_n which_o we_o commit_v not_o only_o by_o outward_a sinful_a action_n but_o even_o by_o the_o most_o secret_a motion_n of_o our_o corrupt_a mind_n and_o will_n not_o only_o by_o these_o actual_a sin_n but_o even_o by_o our_o natural_a inclination_n and_o proneness_n to_o sin_n which_o the_o young_a infant_n have_v and_o bring_v out_o of_o his_o mother_n womb_n for_o he_o that_o break_v any_o one_o of_o the_o commandment_n by_o any_o mean_n break_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o be_v as_o guilty_a of_o sin_n as_o he_o who_o break_v all_o the_o commandment_n so_o that_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n this_o our_o nicodemus_n desire_v to_o repent_v and_o so_o to_o be_v sanctify_v and_o save_v itself_o to_o good_a the_o which_o in_o some_o sense_n they_o do_v true_o think_v &_o call_v the_o grace_n &_o gift_n of_o god_n of_o this_o opinion_n be_v nicodemus_n a_o great_a rabbi_n in_o israel_n who_o be_v amaze_v when_o he_o hear_v christ_n teach_v this_o doctrine_n of_o regeneration_n as_o have_v never_o hear_v of_o any_o such_o matter_n before_o and_o therefore_o when_o christ_n teach_v that_o unless_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v not_o possible_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n he_o make_v this_o carnal_a reply_n must_v man_n return_v into_o their_o mother_n womb_n and_o so_o be_v bear_v again_o this_o ignorance_n of_o regeneration_n be_v the_o most_o common_a hindrance_n why_o man_n do_v not_o seek_v after_o it_o for_o how_o can_v they_o desire_v much_o less_o seek_v that_o which_o they_o do_v not_o know_v neither_o be_v it_o any_o great_a marvel_n that_o so_o many_o be_v ignorant_a of_o it_o consider_v first_o that_o the_o self-love_n which_o be_v in_o man_n by_o nature_n make_v he_o to_o think_v far_o better_o of_o himself_o of_o his_o own_o nature_n strength_n and_o faculty_n than_o he_o shall_v do_v and_o second_o that_o the_o natural_a reason_n of_o man_n will_v hardly_o admit_v any_o supernatural_a or_o miraculous_a work_n rest_v itself_o in_o itself_o that_o be_v in_o the_o inherent_a virtue_n and_o never_o so_o great_a no_o worldly_a prerogative_n whatsoever_o can_v make_v a_o man_n acceptable_a to_o god_n much_o less_o partaker_n of_o eternal_a glory_n both_o which_o belong_v only_o to_o of_o god_n to_o who_o only_o the_o glory_n both_o of_o the_o first_o and_o of_o the_o second_o creation_n be_v to_o be_v give_v and_o to_o beware_v lest_o that_o we_o be_v deceive_v with_o this_o common_a error_n esteem_v sin_n and_o holiness_n to_o be_v nothing_o but_o as_o moral_a virtue_n and_o vice_n spiritual_a regeneration_n nothing_o but_o good_a education_n or_o philosophical_a institution_n godliness_n nothing_o but_o honest_a behaviour_n christianity_n nothing_o but_o civility_n the_o which_o differ_v as_o much_o as_o do_v the_o shadow_n and_o the_o substance_n of_o any_o thing_n otherwise_o we_o shall_v seek_v god_n where_o he_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v and_o so_o without_o all_o question_n lose_v our_o labour_n sect._n 3_o the_o second_o hindrance_n whereby_o man_n may_v be_v and_o be_v keep_v back_o from_o seek_v for_o regeneration_n be_v another_o false_a opinion_n and_o conceit_n of_o it_o whereby_o man_n despair_v of_o attain_v unto_o it_o consider_v either_o themselves_o to_o be_v so_o whole_o dead_a &_o rot_a in_o sin_n that_o they_o can_v imagine_v how_o they_o shall_v ever_o be_v restore_v to_o the_o spiritual_a life_n of_o holiness_n or_o else_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o supernaturalnesse_n of_o regeneration_n as_o be_v a_o divine_a and_o a_o miraculous_a work_n this_o hindrance_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o former_a in_o the_o one_o man_n think_v better_a but_o in_o the_o other_o he_o think_v worse_a of_o his_o natural_a estate_n than_o it_o be_v indeed_o in_o the_o one_o he_o presume_v of_o his_o own_o strength_n in_o the_o other_o he_o despair_v of_o the_o goodness_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o one_o he_o think_v regeneration_n more_o easy_a in_o the_o other_o he_o think_v it_o a_o more_o difficult_a matter_n than_o it_o be_v this_o hindrance_n be_v not_o so_o common_a as_o the_o other_o for_o there_o be_v very_o few_o that_o do_v either_o know_v or_o acknowledge_v the_o doctrine_n of_o supernatural_a regeneration_n yet_o it_o will_v easy_o follow_v of_o that_o doctrine_n for_o man_n will_v soon_o be_v put_v back_o from_o seek_v and_o despair_n of_o attain_v to_o that_o which_o they_o hear_v to_o be_v miraculous_a &_o contrary_a to_o nature_n for_o so_o we_o read_v joh._n 6_o 66._o that_o whereas_o christ_n teach_v that_o no_o man_n can_v come_v unto_o he_o &_o be_v iâ—_n truth_n his_o disciple_n unless_o it_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o of_o the_o father_n and_o as_o he_o say_v v._o 44._o except_o the_o father_n draw_v he_o that_o many_o of_o his_o disciple_n go_v back_o &_o walk_v no_o more_o with_o he_o but_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o whole_a doctrine_n we_o have_v plain_o set_v down_o math._n 19.23.24.25.26_o where_o christ_n have_v say_v that_o it_o be_v hard_a â—ea_o impossible_a for_o a_o rich_a man_n and_o so_o for_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n although_o the_o rich_a who_o abound_v in_o worldly_a pleasure_n be_v further_o off_o to_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n drive_v his_o disciple_n to_o this_o desperate_a conclusion_n who_o then_o can_v be_v save_v or_o to_o what_o purpose_n then_o shall_v any_o man_n go_v about_o to_o be_v save_v whereunto_o christ_n make_v this_o answer_n indeed_o with_o man_n it_o be_v impossible_a but_o not_o with_o god_n that_o be_v although_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o regenerate_v either_o himself_o or_o any_o other_o yet_o to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o only_o possible_a but_o also_o easy_a &_o therefore_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v discourage_v from_o seeek_v or_o despair_n which_o may_v be_v in_o a_o natural_a man_n the_o second_o be_v the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n the_o three_o be_v prayer_n or_o invocation_n natural_a reformation_n be_v a_o show_n shadow_n and_o resemblance_n of_o true_a regeneration_n the_o which_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n may_v work_v in_o himself_o by_o the_o natural_a strength_n of_o his_o free_a will_n without_o any_o supernatural_a and_o extraordinary_a operation_n of_o god_n spirit_n it_o be_v that_o natural_a decrease_n of_o sinfulness_n when_o as_o a_o carnal_a man_n by_o virtue_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o be_v in_o his_o own_o power_n to_o use_v do_v not_o only_o repress_v the_o outward_a act_n of_o sin_n in_o his_o life_n but_o also_o change_v in_o some_o sort_n the_o inward_a disposition_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o of_o his_o will_n from_o ignorance_n to_o knowledge_n and_o from_o vice_n to_o virtue_n as_o we_o know_v that_o many_o both_o christian_n and_o heathen_a especial_o those_o who_o be_v call_v philosopher_n have_v do_v this_o reformation_n be_v the_o first_o mean_n of_o attain_v to_o true_a regeneration_n not_o that_o by_o it_o or_o by_o any_o other_o mean_n whatsoever_o a_o man_n can_v merit_v grace_n
