therefore_o can_v make_v any_o voyage_n of_o advantage_n he_o that_o propose_v a_o end_n yet_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v but_o transitory_o or_o narrow_o good_a he_o can_v receive_v but_o a_o transitory_a and_o narrow_a advancement_n he_o that_o propose_v for_o a_o end_n a_o seem_a good_a but_o a_o real_a evil_n may_v by_o attain_v puff_n up_o his_o imagination_n but_o shall_v substantial_o lessen_v and_o ruin_v himself_o but_o he_o that_o set_v before_o he_o a_o mark_n &_o end_v true_o and_o perfect_o good_a by_o attain_v it_o shall_v make_v himself_o true_o and_o perfect_o happy_a and_o the_o more_o happy_a in_o degree_n as_o in_o more_o degree_n he_o do_v enjoy_v it_o but_o amid_o the_o infinite_a change_n of_o thing_n seem_o good_a how_o shall_v man_n find_v out_o that_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v true_o and_o perfect_o good_a it_o be_v indeed_o a_o impression_n of_o man_n nature_n to_o seek_v for_o good_a but_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n be_v such_o that_o it_o make_v every_o thing_n seem_v good_a to_o itself_o which_o itself_o though_o false_o apprehend_v to_o be_v good_a and_o so_o hence_o it_o come_v that_o many_o man_n run_v a_o unsatisfy_a course_n through_o diverse_a change_n of_o thing_n seem_o good_a and_o most_o man_n choose_v the_o less_o good_a for_o the_o better_a good_a yea_o the_o most_o evil_a for_o the_o most_o good_a but_o he_o that_o will_v serious_o inquire_v for_o true_a happiness_n must_v in_o his_o inquiry_n lie_v aside_o his_o body_n and_o the_o doctrine_n thereof_o and_o he_o must_v retire_v into_o his_o innermost_a and_o most_o secret_a closet_n of_o light_n and_o reason_n and_o there_o ask_v of_o his_o soul_n assure_v truth_n and_o resolution_n concern_v his_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_n yea_o because_o the_o darkness_n of_o a_o heavy_a and_o sensual_a body_n since_o the_o fall_n subject_a to_o corruption_n have_v much_o dim_v the_o light_n of_o the_o soul_n she_o have_v need_n to_o return_v to_o that_o uppermost_a light_n by_o which_o at_o first_o she_o be_v kindle_v thence_o to_o receive_v a_o second_o enlighten_v that_o by_o a_o addition_n of_o the_o high_a light_n she_o may_v find_v out_o her_o high_a &_o chief_a happiness_n the_o soul_n thus_o rectify_v labour_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n attain_v to_o behold_v thing_n in_o their_o truth_n as_o also_o to_o see_v the_o difference_n of_o thing_n confound_v or_o misorder_a by_o the_o ignorance_n of_o corruption_n and_o to_o place_v each_o thing_n in_o his_o due_a rank_n and_o consequent_o the_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_a far_o above_o all_o as_o indeed_o to_o the_o eye_n of_o wisdom_n it_o shine_v in_o a_o notable_a and_o manifest_a supereminence_n and_o as_o she_o give_v due_a acknowledgement_n to_o this_o good_a be_v discover_v so_o she_o call_v aloud_o to_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n to_o strive_v towards_o it_o be_v know_v and_o acknowledge_v she_o advise_v they_o to_o set_v up_o their_o rest_n upon_o it_o to_o adventure_v all_o for_o it_o and_o never_o to_o leave_v labour_v until_o the_o soul_n and_o happiness_n be_v join_v together_o chap._n ii_o how_o that_o must_v be_v condition_v which_o be_v the_o end_n and_o happiness_n of_o man._n now_o if_o with_o such_o wise_a searcher_n of_o felicity_n we_o shall_v make_v the_o like_a enquiry_n examine_v all_o thing_n in_o their_o weight_n and_o worth_n we_o must_v needs_o meet_v in_o one_o truth_n truth_n be_v but_o one_o even_o a_o common_a centre_n in_o which_o all_o rectify_a understanding_n meet_v the_o more_o wise_a a_o man_n be_v the_o more_o possession_n have_v he_o of_o this_o truth_n and_o therefore_o whosoever_o can_v challenge_v to_o himself_o to_o be_v the_o wise_a of_o man_n he_o must_v also_o be_v the_o large_a discoverer_n of_o happiness_n and_o with_o he_o especial_o shall_v other_o wisdom_n meet_v even_o of_o necessity_n now_o that_o we_o firm_o ground_v our_o discovery_n let_v we_o first_o inquire_v what_o condition_n that_o thing_n must_v have_v which_o shall_v be_v the_o happiness_n of_o man._n that_o which_o shall_v make_v man_n happy_a must_v first_o be_v able_a to_o bestow_v on_o man_n a_o absence_n of_o misery_n for_o happiness_n &_o misery_n can_v dwell_v together_o in_o one_o subject_n again_o it_o must_v give_v a_o man_n a_o real_a possession_n and_o enjoy_n of_o the_o attend_v and_o upon_o the_o will_n the_o affection_n yea_o all_o the_o member_n to_o execute_v and_o perform_v the_o will_n of_o god_n certify_v to_o they_o by_o the_o understanding_n now_o there_o be_v such_o a_o aptness_n and_o ability_n of_o conformity_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o all_o thing_n be_v delight_v with_o harmony_n and_o conformity_n especial_o that_o pure_a essence_n which_o be_v vanity_n itself_o sure_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v but_o the_o chief_a pleasure_n and_o service_n most_o acceptable_a to_o the_o creator_n be_v when_o these_o low_a and_o lesser_a spirit_n do_v carry_v themselves_o &_o the_o body_n which_o they_o rule_v in_o a_o perpetual_a consent_n and_o conformity_n to_o that_o great_a spirit_n which_o make_v they_o and_o as_o man_n day_n be_v good_a yet_o he_o say_v only_o that_o it_o be_v good_a he_o say_v not_o that_o it_o be_v goodness_n it_o be_v good_a enough_o in_o his_o kind_n for_o service_n but_o not_o for_o happiness_n lessen_v her_o might_n but_o meditation_n join_v to_o abstinence_n mount_v the_o high_a and_o prayer_n mount_v on_o meditation_n pierce_v the_o swift_a and_o reach_v the_o near_a to_o heaven_n again_o as_o by_o abstinence_n we_o be_v make_v the_o fit_a to_o meditate_v and_o by_o meditation_n make_v the_o fit_a to_o pray_v so_o by_o prayer_n we_o get_v a_o great_a fitness_n and_o ability_n both_o for_o abstinence_n and_o meditation_n such_o prayer_n blesle_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o it_o be_v beget_v by_o go_v to_o the_o father_n of_o blessing_n and_o it_o be_v of_o a_o great_a power_n with_o thing_n return_v either_o by_o their_o own_o will_n conform_v to_o his_o will_n or_o by_o the_o overruling_a of_o his_o power_n which_o subdue_v the_o unwilling_a to_o his_o will_n and_o thus_o must_v it_o needs_o be_v for_o the_o creator_n be_v his_o own_o end_n in_o his_o creation_n and_o do_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o if_o we_o allow_v not_o a_o creator_n we_o confess_v no_o author_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o see_v but_o either_o we_o make_v they_o eternal_a which_o be_v to_o make_v mean_a god_n and_o to_o deny_v the_o more_o excellent_a or_o we_o frame_v some_o imagination_n of_o our_o own_o to_o be_v their_o beginning_n which_o shall_v never_o fit_v with_o they_o so_o well_o as_o a_o wise_a powerful_a and_o eternal_a spirit_n and_o last_o we_o rob_v man_n soul_n of_o a_o true_a rest_n &_o happiness_n for_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n have_v not_o some_o sovereign_a spirit_n to_o give_v it_o eternal_a bliss_n than_o be_v miserable_a man_n shut_v up_o unto_o this_o we_o therefore_o believe_v the_o creator_n to_o be_v a_o most_o clear_a lightsome_a and_o glorious_a spirit_n and_o to_o be_v see_v only_o by_o spirit_n and_o body_n sublimate_v into_o a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o be_v this_o glorious_a &_o eternal_a spirit_n manife_v himself_o to_o our_o apprehension_n in_o three_o person_n the_o print_n and_o impression_n of_o each_o person_n be_v find_v in_o which_o breathe_v or_o flow_v from_o the_o god_n head_n whereby_o god_n love_v and_o enjoy_v himself_o and_o put_v in_o execution_n whatsoever_o he_o will_v have_v do_v for_o himself_o and_o this_o person_n be_v call_v god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n these_o three_o be_v one_o god_n and_o do_v so_o necessary_o join_v in_o every_o creation_n that_o without_o any_o one_o of_o they_o nothing_o can_v wisdom_n from_o which_o these_o rivulet_n may_v flow_v and_o some_o infinite_a power_n which_o can_v actuate_v they_o into_o the_o creature_n and_o if_o so_o then_o necessary_o must_v we_o also_o allow_v some_o pure_a and_o infinite_a essence_n
while_o it_o be_v darkness_n and_o therefore_o from_o the_o justify_v &_o sanctify_v be_v that_o whole_o take_v away_o but_o sorrow_n sickness_n temporal_a death_n and_o all_o other_o outward_a evil_n may_v cease_v to_o be_v evil_n yea_o they_o may_v be_v turn_v into_o benefit_n and_o indeed_o be_v so_o by_o the_o excellence_n of_o he_o that_o dwell_v in_o us._n but_o yet_o our_o restorer_n cease_v not_o in_o a_o mere_a delivery_n of_o we_o from_o positive_a evil_n but_o he_o go_v far_a in_o his_o bounty_n &_o restore_v to_o we_o a_o certain_a ability_n of_o perform_v our_o duty_n &_o right_a while_o they_o suffer_v present_a evil_n for_o future_a glory_n while_o they_o fight_v fearful_a conflict_n against_o remain_a corruption_n and_o the_o king_n thereof_o that_o they_o may_v not_o impair_v their_o future_a joy_n as_o thereby_o they_o preserve_v and_o increase_v these_o joy_n so_o be_v they_o herald_n and_o proclaymer_n of_o the_o exceed_a happiness_n of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o witness_n of_o god_n to_o the_o world_n that_o this_o world_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o the_o next_o and_o that_o neither_o the_o misery_n nor_o felicity_n of_o it_o be_v any_o way_n equal_a to_o that_o transcendent_a joy_n which_o be_v to_o come_v final_o when_o corruption_n over-master_n we_o the_o sufficience_n of_o god_n grace_n do_v relieve_v we_o forgiveness_n supply_v or_o cover_v the_o defect_n of_o infirmity_n but_o yet_o man_n be_v not_o quiet_a he_o be_v not_o in_o good_a like_n with_o this_o kind_n of_o happiness_n for_o he_o complain_v be_v long_o in_o come_v and_o a_o man_n may_v be_v weary_a with_o look_v for_o it_o before_o it_o come_v to_o the_o first_o i_o grant_v indeed_o that_o the_o fleshly_a taste_n relish_v not_o spiritual_a joy_n but_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o therefore_o the_o worse_a but_o the_o better_a for_o the_o grossness_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o purity_n of_o the_o other_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o dislike_n so_o do_v the_o stomach_n of_o the_o country_n swain_n despise_v the_o delicate_a and_o nice_a diet_n of_o the_o fine_a dame_n not_o that_o he_o can_v find_v any_o ill_n in_o it_o to_o this_o be_v that_o of_o the_o poet_n the_o lioness_n hunt_v the_o wolf_n the_o wolf_n seek_v the_o kid_n and_o the_o kid_n delight_v in_o the_o green_a grass_n wherefore_o i_o expect_v not_o this_o spiritual_a blessedness_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o great_a day_n shall_v have_v full_o purge_v our_o soul_n and_o body_n with_o that_o divine_a fire_n and_o refine_v our_o grossness_n corruption_n and_o dross_n then_o to_o we_o make_v full_o spiritual_a shall_v the_o most_o high_a &_o sovereign_a spirit_n be_v the_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_a for_o man_n be_v make_v spiritual_a shall_v delight_v in_o spirit_n &_o chief_o in_o the_o chief_a and_o then_o these_o gross_a pleasure_n desire_v now_o by_o gross_a lust_n shall_v be_v loathsome_a and_o contemptible_a as_o too_o base_a for_o so_o pure_a &_o divine_a essence_n wherefore_o if_o we_o will_v take_v pleasure_n in_o thing_n of_o excellence_n we_o must_v strive_v to_o raise_v ourselves_o to_o their_o excellent_a degree_n we_o must_v lift_v ourselves_o up_o to_o a_o nature_n proportionable_a unto_o they_o and_o by_o such_o a_o indenour_n we_o shall_v purchase_v a_o high_a station_n defer_v of_o happiness_n for_o a_o answer_n i_o will_v ask_v he_o how_o long_o he_o will_v willing_o stay_v to_o be_v heir_n of_o a_o crown_n here_o if_o i_o may_v speak_v for_o he_o i_o think_v he_o will_v confess_v that_o he_o will_v be_v content_v if_o he_o may_v have_v it_o but_o seven_o year_n before_o his_o death_n now_o i_o will_v desire_v he_o to_o stay_v but_o seven_o year_n more_o and_o then_o he_o shall_v have_v this_o crown_n that_o far_o excel_v the_o other_o and_o to_o comfort_v he_o in_o this_o odds_n of_o expectation_n i_o can_v tell_v he_o that_o those_o who_o have_v know_v with_o we_o here_o on_o earth_n second_o if_o thou_o will_v search_v some_o special_a work_n of_o man_n thou_o shall_v find_v writer_n of_o undeniable_a worthiness_n who_o by_o miracle_n prophecy_n oracle_n success_n and_o victory_n against_o opposition_n have_v prove_v the_o verity_n of_o christian_a learning_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o a_o doctrine_n main_o contrary_a to_o flesh_n &_o cherish_v the_o spirit_n by_o which_o both_o holiness_n and_o glory_n may_v be_v increase_v now_o to_o know_v what_o these_o help_n be_v we_o must_v seek_v in_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n who_o
