common_a and_o universal_a and_o so_o carry_v a_o differ_a signification_n from_o the_o subject_n treat_v of_o it_o be_v too_o much_o to_o trace_v he_o in_o all_o his_o twist_n and_o turn_n to_o avoid_v the_o charge_n but_o to_o consider_v his_o position_n a_o little_a further_o i_o observe_v he_o reduce_v his_o notion_n of_o the_o light_n to_o the_o dispensation_n of_o god_n as_o creator_n which_o i_o answer_v this_o be_v a_o general_a reflection_n and_o charge_n upon_o his_o own_o mistake_a consequence_n concern_v christ_n the_o light_n as_o he_o be_v a_o middle_a nature_n or_o be_v quaker_n confine_v the_o light_n within_o etc._n etc._n he_o argue_v these_o two_o light_n can_v no_o more_o interfere_v with_o one_o another_o order_n than_o the_o sun_n can_v usurp_v the_o distinguish_v and_o confess_v the_o divine_a light_n be_v extensive_a to_o universal_a truth_n according_a to_o that_o text_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o the_o corinthian_n the_o spirit_n search_v all_o that_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v absent_a from_o the_o natural_a understanding_n by_o the_o interposition_n of_o spiritual_a as_o well_o as_o natural_a cause_n yet_o present_a with_o the_o light_n in_o its_o spiritual_a way_n of_o understanding_n thus_o j._n n._n abuse_v my_o word_n and_o sense_n where_o i_o say_v this_o divine_a light_n be_v always_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n present_a in_o the_o soul_n he_o say_v it_o contradict_v what_o i_o lay_v down_o before_o viz._n that_o the_o light_n â—oes_v not_o always_o operate_v upon_o the_o understanding_n etc._n etc._n i_o never_o say_v before_o it_o do_v i_o only_o oppose_v his_o notion_n as_o not_o safe_a viz._n that_o the_o light_n be_v always_o present_a with_o his_o understanding_n and_o intimate_o unite_v with_o it_o object_v that_o this_o necessary_o employ_v its_o actual_a operation_n upon_o the_o understanding_n which_o to_o say_v as_o i_o do_v the_o light_n be_v always_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n present_a in_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o imply_v nor_o necessary_o infer_v its_o actual_a operation_n therein_o at_o all_o time_n therefore_o his_o consequence_n on_o i_o vanish_v and_o his_o own_o assertion_n viz._n that_o his_o light_n be_v always_o present_a to_o his_o understanding_n and_o intimate_o unite_v with_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o it_o do_v not_o formal_o enlighten_v or_o instruct_v it_o but_o when_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v carry_v a_o contradiction_n in_o itself_o beside_o i_o show_v how_o he_o mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o intimate_a union_n which_o he_o place_n in_o the_o understanding_n whilst_o it_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o void_a of_o actual_a illumination_n or_o attend_v to_o and_o consult_v the_o divine_a light_n consequent_o without_o partake_v of_o treatment_n thereon_o i_o conceive_v my_o sober_a application_n of_o scripture_n doctrine_n to_o he_o respect_v the_o evil_a of_o those_o snare_n and_o temptation_n of_o the_o enemy_n i_o apprehend_v he_o fall_v into_o as_o well_o as_o personal_a injury_n and_o abuse_n i_o find_v he_o guilty_a of_o will_v vindicate_v my_o undertake_n and_o though_o i_o shall_v be_v severe_a in_o my_o censure_n provide_v it_o be_v true_a and_o well_o ground_v it_o will_v no_o way_n lessen_v or_o violate_v my_o charity_n no_o more_o than_o it_o will_v his_o or_o any_o body_n else_o when_o under_o the_o like_o concern_v have_v thus_o say_v i_o think_v i_o have_v remove_v the_o stress_n of_o his_o objection_n against_o my_o treatment_n of_o he_o to_o his_o own_o door_n and_o here_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o instance_n one_o particular_a passage_n of_o i_o and_o show_v the_o use_n he_o have_v make_v of_o it_o by_o which_o the_o rest_n may_v be_v judge_v upon_o occasion_n of_o his_o ignominious_a reflection_n on_o the_o quaker_n in_o render_v they_o dark_a awkward_a untoward_a and_o unprincipled_a in_o the_o way_n of_o represent_v their_o principle_n viz._n the_o light_n within_o thereby_o discredit_v one_o of_o the_o noble_a theory_n in_o the_o world_n i_o apply_v to_o he_o some_o scripture-text_n particular_o that_o of_o the_o 18_o the_o of_o matthew_n where_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n christ_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o avoid_v offend_v one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o charge_v they_o vers._n 10._o take_v heed_n that_o you_o despise_v not_o one_o of_o the_o little_a one_o and_o from_o thence_o i_o proceed_v and_o say_v i_o fear_v thou_o be_v guilty_a in_o this_o particular_a viz._n of_o despise_v the_o testimony_n of_o god_n in_o this_o age_n through_o the_o meanness_n of_o the_o instrument_n consider_v what_o be_v say_v thess._n 4.8_o he_o therefore_o that_o despise_v despise_v not_o man_n but_o god_n who_o have_v also_o i_o know_v no_o body_n pretend_v they_o be_v do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v they_o be_v not_o divine_o inspire_v at_o all_o and_o if_o they_o be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o blasphemous_a piece_n of_o arrogance_n to_o make_v the_o despise_n of_o the_o quaker_n the_o same_o with_o despise_v christ_n sure_o no_o he_o confess_v himself_o if_o that_o be_v prove_v viz._n that_o they_o be_v divine_o his_o principle_n lodge_v in_o every_o man_n breast_n which_o extend_v as_o far_o as_o all_o truth_n whereby_o it_o be_v perceive_v and_o understand_v why_o then_o may_v not_o the_o quaker_n be_v partaker_n of_o divine_a inspiration_n as_o well_o as_o other_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o true_a christian_n to_o know_v and_o experience_n there_o be_v a_o spirit_n in_o man_n say_v elihu_n and_o the_o inspiration_n of_o the_o almighty_a give_v understanding_n job_n 32.8_o and_o by_o the_o lithurgy_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n all_o be_v instruct_v to_o pray_v for_o it_o which_o show_v it_o be_v attainable_a as_o appear_v by_o the_o collect_n in_o these_o word_n lord_n easter_n from_o who_o all_o good_a thing_n do_v come_v grant_v we_o thy_o humble_a servant_n that_o by_o thy_o holy_a inspiration_n we_o may_v think_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a and_o by_o thy_o merciful_a guide_n may_v perform_v the_o same_o through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ._n again_o so_o consider_v be_v it_o not_o a_o encouragement_n to_o a_o lewd_a crew_n to_o commit_v the_o like_a rudeness_n as_o have_v be_v practise_v upon_o the_o quaker_n when_o they_o find_v it_o tickle_v the_o fancy_n and_o afford_v a_o pleasant_a jest_n to_o a_o fellow_n of_o their_o college_n whatever_o he_o think_v of_o his_o story_n i_o be_o sure_a he_o have_v make_v a_o ill_a application_n of_o be_v not self_o exalt_v to_o sit_v in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n the_o occasion_n and_o reason_n of_o these_o query_n be_v his_o manifest_a abuse_n of_o the_o quaker_n both_o in_o misrepresent_v their_o principle_n and_o villify_n and_o reproach_v they_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o the_o aforementioned_a term_n of_o dark_a awkward_a and_o untoward_a but_o in_o render_v they_o in_o general_a gross_o ignorant_a as_o be_v neither_o rational_a nor_o intelligible_a in_o their_o account_n of_o their_o light_n within_o because_o they_o have_v not_o reduce_v it_o to_o such_o a_o philosophical_a notion_n as_o he_o affect_v viz._n the_o omniformity_n of_o the_o ideal_o world_n though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o say_v they_o confirm_v it_o with_o the_o authority_n of_o st._n john_n be_v gospel_n be_v not_o the_o consequence_n of_o this_o a_o manifest_a overvalue_a his_o own_o notion_n and_o waâ—_n of_o explain_v the_o light_n within_o beyond_o and_o above_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n wherewith_o the_o holy_a evangelist_n be_v divine_o inspire_v and_o instruct_v and_o do_v not_o this_o spring_n from_o self-love_n and_o esteem_n and_o do_v not_o that_o blind_a the_o eye_n and_o cause_v the_o tongue_n to_o speak_v unrighteous_a thing_n and_o when_o self_n love_n and_o esteem_n get_v up_o where_o do_v it_o sit_v but_o in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n may_v i_o not_o hence_o say_v be_v thou_o not_o deck_v thyself_o with_o thy_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o will_v prove_v folly_n in_o the_o end_n by_o corrupt_a wisdom_n i_o mean_v not_o as_o he_o wrong_o insinuate_v human_a learning_n in_o gross_a but_o the_o querk_a wit_n and_o unsanctified_a reason_n of_o man_n in_o the_o mis-use_a or_o abuse_v of_o it_o something_o like_o this_o be_v his_o own_o phrase_n on_o himself_o viz._n his_o unlucky_a fancy_n pag._n 4._o where_o he_o make_v a_o scoff_n at_o i_o about_o the_o light_n within_o in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o he_o have_v exchange_v his_o cold_a quake_a sit_v for_o a_o hot_a one_o and_o that_o the_o light_n within_o be_v turn_v into_o a_o flameâ—_n the_o bare_a mention_v of_o which_o shall_v suffice_v be_v a_o plain_a discovery_n of_o his_o frothy_a wit_n and_o corrupt_a wisdom_n which_o be_v far_o manifest_v in_o his_o charge_n against_o the_o quaker_n in_o his_o postscript_n where_o he_o tax_v their_o make_a use_n of_o those_o divine_a word_n and_o expression_n of_o john_n the_o holy_a evangelist_n in_o confirmation_n of_o their_o principle_n of_o the_o light_n within_o as_o loose_v and_o cant_a and_o which_o i_o say_v look_n too_o much_o like_o prophanenss_n and_o all_o this_o join_v with_o as_o positive_a as_o uncharitable_a assertion_n viz._n that_o they_o understand_v neither_o the_o light_n they_o profess_v nor_o st._n john_n gospel_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o some_o other_o query_n viz._n what_o be_v thou_o o_o man_n that_o boasâ—eth_v thyself_o be_v thou_o wise_a than_o thy_o maker_n who_o wisdom_n have_v bring_v forth_o and_o teach_v his_o people_n those_o expression_n can_v thou_o by_o search_v find_v out_o god_n or_o the_o almighty_a â—â—to_fw-mi perfection_n i_o tell_v thou_o nay_o and_o here_o without_o pretend_v to_o be_v prophet_n i_o may_v and_o do_v say_v that_o god_n will_v confound_v his_o wisdom_n and_o bring_v to_o nought_o his_o understanding_n wherein_o it_o be_v exalt_v i_o pray_v god_n he_o may_v witness_v it_o in_o mercy_n to_o he_o this_o general_a villify_n and_o reproach_v charge_n against_o the_o not_o the_o quaker_n as_o many_o of_o they_o as_o true_o love_v and_o fear_n god_n and_o work_v righteousness_n in_o the_o earth_n be_v of_o the_o number_n that_o dwell_v in_o heaven_n how_o dare_v he_o then_o say_v or_o how_o can_v he_o say_v true_o of_o the_o many_o thousand_o he_o know_v not_o that_o they_o neither_o understand_v the_o light_n they_o profess_v nor_o st._n john_n gospel_n without_o blast_v their_o fame_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o i_o take_v occasion_n to_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o light_a thing_n to_o speak_v evil_a of_o thing_n
their_o principle_n or_o not_o which_o be_v the_o chief_a thing_n to_o be_v consider_v and_o my_o present_a business_n to_o examine_v 184._o j._n n._n assert_n the_o quaker_n usual_o talk_v of_o this_o light_n within_o as_o of_o some_o divine_a communication_n and_o manifestation_n only_o by_o this_o assertion_n i_o conclude_v he_o represent_v the_o quaker_n to_o own_o the_o light_n within_o to_o be_v a_o accident_n and_o not_o a_o substantial_a inherent_a principle_n of_o divine_a excellency_n i_o shall_v gentle_o pass_v by_o his_o discant_fw-la upon_o the_o word_n inherent_a which_o and_o manifestation_n only_o to_o be_v a_o accident_n he_o endeavour_v to_o evade_v 32._o by_o lessen_v the_o weight_n of_o my_o argument_n from_o the_o first_o of_o john_n the_o evangelist_n but_o before_o i_o consider_v that_o i_o shall_v pursue_v my_o conclusion_n viz._n that_o he_o make_v the_o quaker_n light_n to_o be_v a_o accident_n it_o be_v obvious_a his_o word_n communication_n and_o manifestation_n only_o be_v oppose_v to_o the_o divine_a substance_n itself_o as_o the_o formal_a and_o immediate_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n in_o which_o sense_n the_o quaker_n profess_v and_o own_v the_o light_n but_o communication_n and_o manifestation_n only_o be_v a_o create_a effect_n and_o consequent_o neither_o the_o formal_a object_n in_o the_o sense_n aforesaid_a nor_o indeed_o the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o our_o illumination_n but_o the_o illumination_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o product_n of_o some_o previous_a agent_n can_v amount_v to_o no_o more_o than_o a_o accident_n which_o differ_v from_o a_o substance_n as_o the_o effect_n from_o the_o cause_n have_v thus_o distinguish_v upon_o the_o proposition_n i_o see_v no_o reason_n i._n n._n have_v to_o fault_n either_o my_o conclusion_n or_o argument_n from_o the_o first_o of_o john_n that_o the_o life_n of_o the_o word_n be_v the_o light_n of_o man_n and_o my_o infer_v from_o thence_o that_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n consider_v he_o confess_v the_o word_n and_o the_o life_n of_o the_o word_n to_o be_v real_a substance_n and_o that_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v the_o life_n be_v the_o light_n i_o be_o the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n say_v christ_n jesus_n he_o that_o follow_v i_o shall_v not_o walk_v in_o darkness_n but_o have_v the_o light_n of_o life_n john_n 8.12_o these_o viz._n light_a and_o darkness_n be_v of_o contrary_a power_n real_o and_o not_o fantastical_o express_v consequent_o this_o light_n must_v be_v a_o divine_a substance_n in_o opposition_n to_o a_o accident_n as_o to_o i._o n_n distinction_n between_o efficient_o and_o formal_o as_o apply_v to_o the_o light_n i_o think_v it_o overnice_a because_o he_o make_v the_o light_n in_o both_o respect_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o illumination_n the_o one_o as_o the_o enlightner_n of_o our_o understanding_n the_o other_o as_o the_o object_n of_o our_o conception_n and_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n more_o than_o in_o the_o mode_n or_o form_n of_o expression_n see_v in_o both_o sense_n he_o must_v needs_o be_v understand_v to_o infer_v the_o light_n to_o be_v a_o real_a substance_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o he_o have_v at_o length_n grant_v i_o the_o quaker_n make_v the_o light_n to_o be_v so_o too_o 36._o viz._n a_o real_a substance_n let_v he_o not_o henceforth_o say_v they_o talk_v of_o it_o as_o a_o divine_a communication_n and_o manifestation_n only_o which_o term_n only_o whatever_o he_o think_v of_o it_o or_o however_o subtle_o he_o seek_v to_o evite_v it_o be_v exclusive_a of_o substance_n in_o general_n upon_o the_o explication_n and_o reason_n i_o have_v give_v and_o consequent_o a_o misrepresentation_n of_o their_o principleâ—_n like_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v the_o do_v not_o make_v it_o the_o very_a substance_n of_o god_n for_o which_o he_o quote_v the_o follow_a passage_n out_o of_o r._n b_n apol._n pag._n 133._o by_o this_o seed_n grace_n and_o word_n of_o god_n and_o light_n wherewith_o we_o say_v every_o man_n be_v enlighten_v and_o have_v a_o measure_n of_o it_o which_o strive_v with_o they_o in_o order_n to_o save_v they_o and_o which_o may_v by_o the_o stubbornness_n and_o wickedness_n of_o man_n will_n be_v quench_v bruise_a wound_a press_v down_o slay_v and_o crucify_v we_o understand_v not_o the_o proper_a essence_n and_o nature_n of_o truth_n come_v by_o christ_n jesus_n universal_o extend_v to_o all_o mankind_n the_o true_a light_n that_o light_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n in_o the_o day_n and_o time_n of_o his_o visitation_n wherein_o he_o may_v be_v save_v it_o be_v manifest_a they_o believe_v all_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n actual_o enlighten_v by_o it_o insomuch_o that_o consider_v man_n in_o his_o fall_v and_o degerate_v and_o dead_a estate_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o to_o live_v and_o return_v to_o god_n till_o first_o quicken_v and_o enlighten_v by_o he_o i_o hope_v by_o this_o i_o fancy_n in_o make_v his_o five_o article_n to_o be_v the_o same_o in_o substance_n with_o the_o first_o but_o i_o have_v more_o cause_n to_o admire_v his_o dis-ingenuity_n in_o state_v it_o a_o new_a with_o additional_a word_n no_o where_o express_v in_o the_o say_v 5_o the_o article_n to_o which_o he_o assign_v it_o which_o have_v obtrude_v he_o make_v use_v of_o they_o not_o only_o to_o invalidate_v my_o charge_n but_o to_o subject_v i_o under_o a_o opposition_n to_o sound_n and_o approve_a doctrine_n deliver_v by_o r._n b._n and_o g._n k._n as_o likewise_o to_o a_o contradiction_n of_o myself_o as_o by_o what_o follow_v may_v appear_v but_o first_o let_v it_o be_v consider_v why_o he_o admire_v my_o fancy_n it_o be_v this_o in_o his_o first_o article_n he_o represent_v the_o quaker_n to_o make_v the_o light_n within_o a_o divine_a communication_n and_o manifestation_n only_a this_o i_o have_v show_v elsewhere_o to_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o some_o cause_n and_o not_o the_o cause_n or_o principle_n the_o light_a its_o self_n therefore_o not_o the_o quaker_n faith_n but_o j._n n_n presumption_n in_o his_o 5_o the_o article_n he_o make_v they_o to_o understand_v by_o this_o light_n within_o some_o determinate_a formid_n dictate_v or_o proposition_n express_o and_o positive_o direct_v and_o instruct_v they_o to_o do_v so_o or_o so_o now_o this_o determinate_a formid_n dictate_v or_o proposition_n etc._n etc._n be_v not_o the_o light_n itself_o but_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o light_n whether_o it_o be_v outward_o write_v as_o be_v the_o holy_a scripture_n or_o inward_o write_v in_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n both_o which_o may_v and_o do_v remain_v when_o the_o divine_a light_n the_o bless_a author_n thereof_o be_v cloud_v as_o to_o man_n and_o obscure_v this_o be_v general_o experience_v more_o especial_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o rebellious_a and_o so_o it_o differ_v from_o be_v only_o a_o divine_a communication_n and_o manifestation_n thus_o the_o quaker_n distinguish_v concern_v the_o divine_a light_n that_o it_o be_v the_o author_n of_o their_o divine_a knowledge_n and_o not_o the_o knowledge_n itself_o strict_o
