objective_n and_o subjective_a illumination_n as_o anti-christian_n and_o deceitful_a i_o answer_v i_o do_v not_o blame_v the_o distinction_n simple_o as_o in_o itself_o but_o as_o it_o be_v illuse_v and_o apply_v whereas_o they_o say_v the_o influence_n and_o illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o believer_n be_v mere_o effective_a or_o subjective_a and_o not_o at_o all_o objective_n but_o i_o say_v it_o be_v both_o effective_a and_o objective_a effective_a to_o help_v we_o to_o see_v or_o hear_v and_o objective_n or_o by_o way_n of_o â—bject_n for_o the_o sight_n and_o hear_v or_o any_o other_o perception_n of_o our_o soul_n to_o stay_v and_o rest_n upon_o but_o this_o object_n can_v no_o more_o be_v the_o letter_n of_o scripture_n alone_o than_o a_o report_n of_o meat_n and_o we_o to_o feel_v and_o effective_o do_v strengthen_v our_o feel_n but_o when_o the_o fire_n heat_v a_o stone_n it_o work_v in_o it_o only_o effective_o and_o not_o objective_o or_o as_o a_o object_n but_o believer_n receive_v not_o the_o heavenly_a light_n and_o warmth_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o dead_a and_o insensible_a stone_n but_o as_o live_a soul_n that_o have_v a_o real_a sense_n and_o perception_n of_o that_o which_o do_v influence_n they_o and_o therefore_o that_o influence_n be_v the_o proper_a immediate_a object_n of_o their_o perception_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o inward_a spiritual_a object_n that_o the_o spirit_n present_v to_o god_n child_n than_o there_o be_v no_o inward_a spiritual_a eye_n nor_o ear_n nor_o inward_a spiritual_a taste_n or_o savour_n nor_o inward_a spiritual_a feel_v all_o which_o be_v most_o contrary_a both_o to_o scripture_n which_o mention_n all_o these_o spiritual_a sense_n as_o i_o have_v prove_v at_o large_a in_o my_o book_n of_o immediate_a revelation_n and_o also_o to_o the_o saint_n experience_n and_o do_v not_o god_n promise_v that_o his_o child_n shall_v see_v he_o under_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o certain_o all_o sight_n that_o be_v proper_a be_v immediate_a and_o to_o say_v that_o the_o saint_n only_o see_v god_n by_o the_o scripture_n be_v but_o as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v that_o we_o only_o see_v our_o father_n by_o a_o report_n of_o he_o or_o that_o we_o only_o see_v the_o outward_a sun_n by_o one_o tell_v we_o that_o it_o shine_v who_o have_v indeed_o see_v it_o or_o that_o we_o only_o see_v our_o native_a country_n in_o which_o we_o live_v and_o dwell_v by_o look_v at_o the_o map_n of_o it_o but_o certain_o such_o a_o remote_a and_o improper_a see_v doâ—s_v no_o wise_a answer_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n but_o rather_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o old_a and_o if_o that_o be_v all_o to_o see_v god_n in_o the_o scripture_n than_o all_o those_o that_o live_v under_o the_o old_a covenant_n see_v god_n as_o clear_o as_o believer_n under_o the_o new_a covenant_n see_v they_o have_v the_o scripture_n in_o great_a part_n but_o i_o remember_v a_o good_a say_n of_o s._n r._n in_o one_o of_o his_o epistle_n that_o i_o hope_v may_v have_v some_o weight_n with_o i._n a._n that_o be_v little_a say_v he_o to_o see_v christ_n in_o a_o book_n which_o yet_o the_o scripture_n be_v he_o be_v a_o great_a stranger_n to_o the_o new_a covenant_n dispensation_n and_o be_v still_o like_a so_o to_o remain_v while_o he_o dispute_v in_o unbelief_n against_o so_o great_a a_o blessing_n that_o if_o he_o do_v believe_v he_o may_v attain_v unto_o but_o i_o wish_v the_o lord_n may_v open_v his_o eye_n and_o then_o he_o will_v no_o more_o contend_v against_o such_o a_o thing_n i._o a._n scripture_n be_v superior_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o his_o dictate_v in_o our_o heart_n i_o deny_v it_o and_o though_o we_o be_v to_o examine_v the_o inward_a dictate_v of_o god_n spirit_n by_o the_o scripture_n yet_o that_o prove_v not_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v superior_a no_o more_o than_o that_o it_o prove_v that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v superior_a to_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n because_o the_o people_n examine_v the_o latter_a by_o the_o former_a his_o four_o argument_n be_v build_v upon_o a_o supposition_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o principal_a rule_n and_o consequent_o not_o the_o spirit_n inward_o dictate_v in_o our_o heart_n but_o he_o have_v not_o prove_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v a_o more_o principal_a rule_n consistent_a and_o mutual_o bear_v witness_v one_o of_o another_o even_o as_o john_n bear_v witness_v to_o christ_n and_o christ_n bare_a witness_n to_o john_n although_o christ_n need_v not_o the_o testimony_n of_o john_n as_o for_o himself_o his_o four_o argument_n conclude_v only_o against_o a_o thing_n which_o we_o do_v no_o wise_n deny_v viz._n that_o every_o dictate_v within_o be_v not_o concern_v any_o other_o then_o that_o alone_o dictate_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n in_o man_n which_o have_v a_o self_n evidence_n unto_o he_o who_o have_v it_o as_o i._o a._n must_v needs_o acknowledge_v it_o have_v to_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n but_o he_o object_n that_o the_o devil_n may_v present_v a_o imposture_n unto_o a_o man_n with_o so_o much_o seem_a evidence_n as_o with_o the_o concurrence_n of_o a_o deceitful_a heart_n will_v make_v it_o be_v receive_v for_o a_o divine_a truth_n especial_o by_o that_o man_n that_o for_o the_o present_a time_n have_v no_o divine_a dictate_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o person_n suppose_v by_o i._n a._n be_v either_o one_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v in_o his_o just_a judgement_n for_o some_o great_a unfaithfulness_n and_o abuse_v of_o light_n former_o give_v deliver_v up_o to_o satan_n delusion_n such_o as_o these_o mention_v 2_o thess._n 2._o 11._o and_o as_o for_o he_o and_o the_o like_a sort_n the_o scripture_n can_v help_v he_o for_o certain_o he_o that_o be_v give_v up_o by_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o delusion_n of_o satan_n as_o a_o punishment_n of_o his_o sin_v against_o the_o light_n he_o once_o have_v will_v misunderstand_v the_o scripture_n and_o can_v otherwise_o do_v even_o as_o the_o jew_n and_o sadducee_n do_v of_o old_a but_o as_o for_o other_o that_o be_v not_o so_o give_v up_o by_o the_o lord_n it_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v suppose_v that_o they_o can_v altogether_o want_v some_o divine_a dictate_v or_o witness_v of_o god_n spirit_n to_o testify_v against_o the_o strong_a delusion_n of_o satan_n and_o therefore_o he_o to_o who_o satan_n present_v such_o a_o delusion_n if_o he_o have_v a_o sincere_a love_n to_o the_o truth_n by_o compare_v the_o delusion_n with_o the_o true_a dictate_v or_o light_v of_o christ_n that_o witness_v against_o it_o may_v ready_o discover_v it_o to_o be_v a_o delusion_n and_o if_o the_o say_a delusion_n be_v contrary_a to_o any_o doctrine_n express_o declare_v in_o the_o scripture_n the_o scripture_n will_v also_o be_v a_o secondary_a confirmation_n to_o he_o that_o what_o be_v so_o present_v to_o he_o be_v but_o a_o delusion_n but_o many_o time_n satan_n present_v delusion_n to_o man_n to_o do_v or_o act_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o simple_o in_o themselves_o unlawful_a or_o contrary_a to_o scripture_n and_o then_o i_o query_n by_o what_o rule_n shall_v these_o delusion_n be_v discover_v but_o i_o confess_v i._n a._n have_v a_o very_a short_a way_n but_o yet_o very_o false_a and_o unsound_a to_o resolve_v any_o command_n of_o god_n or_o any_o divine_a testimony_n see_v there_o be_v none_o such_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n they_o be_v all_o according_a to_o he_o either_o a_o man_n own_o thought_n or_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n and_o therefore_o nothing_o that_o a_o man_n have_v in_o he_o be_v to_o be_v rely_v upon_o but_o it_o be_v strange_a doctrine_n that_o satan_n shall_v be_v so_o near_o always_o to_o dictate_v evil_a even_o unto_o the_o child_n of_o god_n immediate_o but_o god_n and_o christ_n shall_v be_v at_o such_o a_o distance_n as_o not_o once_o in_o a_o man_n whole_a life_n the_o three_o section_n of_o his_o survey_n upon_o the_o four_o query_n i._n a._n pretend_v to_o answer_v our_o objection_n or_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v a_o word_n or_o dictate_v of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n or_o christ_n himself_o that_o do_v dictate_v or_o teach_v in_o we_o and_o who_o be_v the_o principal_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o life_n all_o which_o objection_n he_o bring_v they_o not_o either_o in_o matter_n or_o form_n as_o use_v by_o we_o but_o miserable_o pervert_v the_o most_o of_o they_o to_o a_o contrary_a sense_n and_o intent_n as_o if_o we_o do_v use_v those_o reason_n both_o needful_a to_o be_v do_v see_v they_o be_v command_v of_o god_n and_o as_o profitable_a to_o man_n yea_o to_o the_o most_o advance_a and_o experience_a saint_n when_o due_o practise_v and_o it_o be_v a_o exceed_o great_a mistake_n in_o our_o adversary_n general_o to_o suppose_v that_o our_o principle_n of_o immediate_a revelation_n or_o the_o immediate_a teach_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v destroy_v or_o make_v null_n and_o void_a the_o use_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o any_o other_o mean_n for_o by_o immediate_n we_o mean_v not_o immediate_a in_o opposition_n to_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v mean_n true_o appoint_v of_o god_n as_o read_v the_o scripture_n preach_v pray_v meditate_v sing_v wait_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_n we_o say_v it_o be_v only_o by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n immediate_a teach_n and_o leading_n that_o those_o and_o the_o like_a mean_n be_v make_v effectual_a and_o profitable_a to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n for_o if_o the_o prophet_n and_o express_o contain_v in_o scripture_n but_o many_o of_o they_o only_o deduce_v by_o consequence_n therefrom_o by_o what_o infallible_a consequence_n can_v he_o convince_v any_o rational_a man_n that_o his_o and_o their_o consequence_n be_v just_a and_o right_o since_o he_o lay_v no_o claim_n to_o the_o least_o measure_n of_o that_o kind_n of_o direction_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n teach_v he_o and_o his_o brethren_n to_o draw_v those_o consequence_n which_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n have_v whereby_o they_o argue_v and_o do_v draw_v consequence_n from_o place_n of_o scripture_n former_o write_v and_o see_v not_o only_a papist_n and_o protestant_n but_o the_o episcopal_a and_o presbyterian_a draw_v contrary_a consequence_n from_o the_o scripture_n what_o evidence_n can_v i._o a._n give_v we_o why_o we_o shall_v receive_v the_o consequence_n of_o the_o one_o more_o than_o the_o other_o or_o can_v we_o think_v the_o lord_n have_v leave_v his_o people_n so_o in_o the_o dark_a as_o to_o give_v no_o other_o knowledge_n of_o his_o will_n in_o a_o great_a many_o thing_n whiâ—h_o be_v article_n of_o faith_n but_o what_o can_v be_v search_v out_o by_o long_a and_o tedious_a consequence_n of_o the_o bare_a natural_a understanding_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v leave_v to_o itself_o to_o fish_n and_o hunt_v in_o the_o dark_a after_o such_o consequence_n without_o any_o such_o special_a direction_n and_o conduct_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o least_o measure_n which_o christ_n and_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n have_v nay_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o i._o a._n do_v acknowledge_v so_o much_o as_o the_o least_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o any_o sort_n of_o operation_n or_o illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o â—uch_o as_o that_o they_o call_v effective_a or_o subjective_a order_n to_o draw_v their_o consequence_n from_o the_o scripture_n but_o if_o this_o way_n of_o draw_v consequence_n without_o the_o help_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v so_o safe_a and_o sure_a how_o be_v it_o then_o that_o so_o many_o of_o all_o sort_n draw_v contrary_a consequence_n from_o the_o same_o scripture_n be_v not_o the_o great_a reason_n of_o all_o this_o because_o man_n be_v depart_v from_o that_o holy_a spirit_n which_o give_v forth_o the_o scripture_n and_o can_v only_o give_v the_o true_a understanding_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o not_o plain_a and_o manifest_a as_o the_o light_n at_o noonday_n that_o man_n natural_a spirit_n and_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n in_o its_o high_a perfection_n be_v altogether_o unable_a to_o meddle_v with_o divine_a truth_n or_o to_o search_v after_o they_o as_o it_o remain_v alone_o hunt_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o certain_o this_o be_v no_o small_a part_n of_o that_o curse_a self-conceit_n and_o exaltation_n of_o mind_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o degenerate_v nature_n of_o man_n that_o they_o think_v they_o can_v be_v wise_a enough_o without_o god_n spirit_n they_o need_v no_o direction_n or_o assistance_n or_o illumination_n to_o help_v they_o to_o search_v into_o the_o scripture_n they_o can_v do_v that_o well_o enough_o with_o their_o natural_a reason_n and_o a_o little_a school-craft_n of_o artificial_a logic_n and_o grammar_n and_o natural_a philosophy_n but_o that_o bless_a man_n david_n be_v of_o another_o mind_n when_o he_o pray_v unto_o the_o lord_n say_v open_v my_o eye_n that_o i_o may_v see_v the_o wonderful_a thing_n of_o thy_o law_n and_o as_o for_o consequence_n which_o man_n draw_v as_o they_o be_v direct_v and_o teach_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n be_v when_o they_o draw_v any_o consequence_n from_o what_o be_v former_o write_v we_o do_v own_o they_o and_o receive_v they_o and_o none_o else_o but_o yet_o as_o to_o the_o most_o weighty_a and_o necessary_a thing_n to_o wit_n such_o as_o be_v the_o general_a principle_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o doctrine_n and_o which_o as_o such_o be_v general_o to_o and_o principle_n of_o religion_n but_o to_o let_v we_o understand_v that_o all_o the_o principle_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n which_o god_n require_v in_o common_a of_o all_o christian_n be_v express_o their_o deliver_v and_o record_v and_o put_v as_o it_o be_v in_o a_o puplick_a register_n and_o therefore_o for_o my_o part_n what_o i_o can_v find_v express_o deliver_v in_o scripture_n i_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o i_o shall_v receive_v or_o believe_v it_o as_o any_o common_a article_n or_o principle_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n or_o life_n and_o for_o such_o to_o who_o god_n have_v give_v that_o divine_a skill_n to_o â—ive_a or_o dip_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o scripture_n 〈◊〉_d out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o other_o man_n who_o may_v â—e_v true_a a_o peculiar_a degree_n of_o wisdom_n or_o understanding_n in_o the_o depth_n of_o the_o scripture_n as_o other_o who_o yet_o be_v true_a christian_n do_v not_o reach_v unto_o and_o concern_v such_o now_o under_o heaven_n to_o who_o the_o gospel_n ought_v not_o or_o may_v not_o be_v preach_v suppose_v they_o altogether_o at_o present_a want_n the_o outward_a testimony_n of_o scripure_a and_o divine_a illuminaon_n than_o he_o may_v know_v something_o belong_v to_o his_o soul_n salvation_n so_o far_o as_o his_o weakness_n can_v permit_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o say_a illumination_n for_o how_o be_v man_n convert_v from_o natural_a to_o spiritual_a god_n deal_v not_o with_o man_n in_o conversion_n as_o with_o stock_n and_o stone_n but_o as_o with_o reasonable_a creature_n have_v some_o capacity_n of_o understanding_n prop._n 3._o that_o some_o in_o scripture_n be_v say_v to_o have_v neither_o ear_n to_o hear_v nor_o eye_n to_o see_v nor_o heart_n to_o understand_v and_o that_o because_o god_n have_v not_o give_v it_o unto_o they_o which_o be_v another_o objection_n of_o j._n a._n this_o do_v not_o prove_v that_o at_o no_o time_n god_n have_v give_v to_o those_o people_n any_o measure_n of_o sufficient_a grace_n for_o this_o great_a and_o extraordinary_a darkness_n and_o blindness_n may_v be_v upon_o they_o either_o because_o the_o day_n of_o their_o visitation_n be_v they_o may_v be_v save_v as_o be_v clear_a from_o v_o 10._o and_o therefore_o it_o do_v not_o follow_v as_o i._o a._n will_v have_v it_o that_o these_o who_o be_v so_o fearful_o blind_v by_o antichrist_n delusion_n never_o have_v a_o day_n of_o visitation_n before_o they_o be_v so_o blind_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o be_v manifest_a they_o have_v because_o their_o blindness_n be_v will_v draw_v all_o man_n unto_o i_o and_o certain_o all_o who_o christ_n draw_v the_o father_n also_o draw_v for_o say_v christ_n my_o father_n hitherto_o work_v and_o i_o work_v nor_o do_v the_o word_n of_o christ_n cite_v by_o i._n a._n prove_v the_o contrary_a joh._n 6._o 45._o every_o man_n that_o have_v hear_v and_o learn_v of_o the_o father_n come_v to_o he_o for_o christ_n do_v not_o simple_o say_v every_o one_o that_o have_v hear_v of_o the_o father_n come_v to_o he_o but_o every_o one_o that_o have_v learned_a as_o well_o as_o hear_v now_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o every_o one_o have_v learned_a of_o the_o father_n although_o they_o have_v hear_v in_o some_o sort_n also_o there_o be_v a_o right_a and_o wrong_n hear_n some_o hear_v willing_o and_o this_o be_v only_o the_o right_a hear_n but_o although_o all_o hear_v one_o time_n or_o another_o while_o their_o day_n of_o grace_n last_o yet_o few_o hear_v willing_o so_o as_o to_o obey_v and_o therefore_o they_o come_v not_o unto_o christ._n prop._n 6._o whereas_o i._o a._n argue_v again_o that_o wicked_a man_n have_v not_o the_o power_n principle_n or_o habit_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o they_o have_v not_o sufficient_a grace_n and_o he_o labour_v to_o prove_v they_o have_v not_o the_o power_n and_o habit_n or_o principle_n of_o grace_n because_o otherwise_o they_o will_v be_v convert_v and_o gracious_a man_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v although_o wicked_a man_n have_v not_o these_o power_n and_o habit_n as_o some_o call_v they_o actual_o yet_o they_o have_v they_o hidden_o to_o wit_n in_o a_o seed_n or_o principle_n of_o grace_n which_o virtual_o contain_v all_o these_o power_n and_o faculty_n even_o as_o the_o seed_n of_o a_o tree_n do_v virtual_o contain_v the_o fruit_n and_o tree_n thus_o because_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o query_n that_o christ_n set_v up_o the_o true_a worship_n in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n above_o 1600_o year_n ago_o but_o nothing_o but_o great_a ignorance_n or_o prejudice_n can_v from_o this_o infer_v that_o there_o be_v not_o any_o degree_n of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n in_o former_a time_n and_o i._n a._n may_v as_o well_o argue_v against_o
