a very fair woman and one that feared the Lord. 3 Her parents also were righteous and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses 4 Now Joacim was a great rich man and had a fair garden joyning unto his house and to him resorted the Jews because he was more honourable then all others 5 The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges such as the Lord spake of that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges who seemed to govern the people 6 These kept much at Joacims house and all that had any suits in law came unto them 7 Now when the people departed away at noon Susanna went into her husbands garden to walk 8 And the two elders saw her going in every day and walking so that their lust was inflamed toward her 9 And they perverted their own minde and turned away their eyes that they might not look unto heaven nor remember just judgements 10 And albeit they both were wounded with her love yet durst not one shew another his grief 11 For they were ashamed to declare their lust that they desired to have to do with her 12 Yet they watched diligently from day to day to see her 13 And the one said to the other Let us now go home for it is dinner-time 14 So when they were gone out they parted the one from the other and turning back again they came to the same place and after they had asked one another the cause they acknowledged their lust then appointed they a time both together when they might finde her alone 15 And it fell out as they watched a fit time she went in †Gr. as yesterday and the day before as before with two maids onely and she was desirous to wash her self in the garden for it was hot 16 And there was no body there save the two elders that had hid themselves and watched her 17 Then she said to her maids Bring me oyl and washing-balls and shut the garden doors that I may wash me 18 And they did as she bade them and shut the garden-doors and went out themselves at ‖ Or side-doors privy doors to fetch the things that she had commanded them but they saw not the elders because they were hid 19 Now when the maids were gone forth the two elders rose up and ran unto her saying 20 Behold the garden-doors are shut that no man can see us and we are in love with thee therefore consent unto us and lie with us 21 If thou wilt not we will bear witness against thee that a young man was with thee and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee 22 Then Susanna sighed and said I am straighted on every side for if I do this thing it is death unto me and if I do it not I cannot escape your hands 23 It is better for me to fall into your hands and not to do it then to sin in the sight of the Lord. 24 With that Susanna cried with a loud voice and the two elders cried out against her 25 Then ran the one and opened the garden-door 26 So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden they rushed in at a privy door to see what was done unto her 27 But when the elders had declared their matter the servants were greatly ashamed for there was never such a report made of Susanna 28 And it came to pass the next day when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death 29 And said before the people Send for Susanna the daughter of Chelcias Joacims wife and so they sent 30 So she came with her father and mother her children and all her kindred 31 Now Susanna was a very delicate woman and beauteous to behold 32 And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face for she was covered that they might be filled with her beauty 33 Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept 34 Then the two elders stood up in the mids of the people and said their hands upon her head 35 And she weeping looked up towards heaven for her heart trusted in the Lord. 36 And the elders said As we walked in the garden alone this woman came in with two maids and shut the garden doors and sent the maids away 37 Then a young man who there was hid came unto her and lay with her 38 Then we that stood in a corner of the garden seeing this wickedness ran unto them 39 And when we saw them together the man we could not hold for he was stronger then we and opened the door and leaped out 40 But having taken this woman we asked who the young man was but she would not tell us these things do we testifie 41 Then the assembly beleeve them as those that were the elders and judges of the people so they condemned her to death 42 Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said O everlasting God that knowest the secrets and knowest all things before they be 43 Thou knowest that they have born false witness against me and behold I must die whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me 44 And the Lord heard her voice 45 Therefore when she was led to be put to death the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth whose name was Daniel 46 Who cried with a loud voice I am clear from the bloud of this woman 47 Then all the people turned them towards him and said What mean those words that thou hast spoken 48 So he standing in the midst of them said Are ye such fools ye sons of Israel that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel 49 Return again to the place of judgement for they have born false witness against her 50 Wherefore all the people turned again in haste and the elders said unto him Come sit down among us and shew it us seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder 51 Then said Daniel unto them Put these two aside one far from another and I will examine them 52 So when they were put asunder one from another he called one of them and said unto him O thou that art waxen old in wickedness now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light 53 For thou hast pronounced false judgement and hast condemned the innocent and hast let the guilty go free albeit the Lord saith * Exod. 23.7 The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay 54 Now then if thou hast seen her tell me Under what tree sawest thou them companying together Who answered Under a †Gr. lentiâ—k-trâ—â— mastick-tree 55 And Daniel said Very well thou hast lied against thine own head for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two 56 So
And Noah was six hundred years old when the floud of waters was upon the earth 7 ¶ And Noah went in and his sons and his wife and his sons wives with him into the ark because of the waters of the floud 8 Of clean beasts and of beasts that are not clean and of fowls and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth 9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark the male and the female as God had commanded Noah 10 And it came to pass ‖ Or on the seventh day after seven days that the waters of the floud were upon the earth 11 ¶ In the six hundredth year of Noahs life in the second moneth the seventeenth day of the moneth the same day were all yÌ„ fountains of the great deep broken up and the ‖ Or floud-â—ates windows of heaven were opened 12 And the rain was upon the earth fourty days and fourty nights 13 In the self same day entred Noah and Shem and Ham and Japheth the sons of Noah and Noahs wife and the three wives of his sons with them into the ark 14 They and every beast after his kindâ— and all the cattel after their kinde and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kinde and every fowl after his kinde every bird of every †Heb. wing sort 15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark two and two of all flesh wherein is the breath of life 16 And they that went in went in male and female of all flesh as God had commanded him and the LORD shut him in 17 And the floud was fourty days upon the earth and the waters increased and bare up the ark and it was lift up above the earth 18 And the waters prevailed and were increased greatly upon the earth and the ark went upon the face of the waters 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth and all the high hills that were under the whole heaven were covered 20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail and the mountains were covered 21 * Wisd 10.4 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth both of fowl and of cattel and of beast and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth and every man 22 All in whose nostrils was †Heb. the breath of the spirit of life the breath of life of all that was in the dry land died 23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground both man and cattel and the creeping things and the fowl of the heaven and they were destroyed from the earth and * Wisd 10.4 2 Pet. 2.5 Noah onely remained alive and they that were with him in the ark 24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred fifty days CHAP. VIII 1 The waters asswaye 4 The ark resteth on Ararat 7 The Raven and the Dove 15 Noah being commanded 18 goeth forth of the ark 20 He builâ—eth an altar and offereth sacrifice 21 which God accepteth and promiseth to curse the earth no more ANd God remembred Noah and every living thing and all the cattel that was with him in the ark and God made a wind to pass over the earth and the waters asswaged 2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped and the rain from heaven was restrained 3 And the waters returned from off the earth †Heb. in going and returning continually and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated 4 ¶ And the ark rested in the seventh moneth on the seventeenth day of the moneth upon the mountains of Ararat 5 And the waters †Heb. were in going and decreasing decreased continually until the tenth moneth in the tenth moneth on the first day of the moneth were the tops of the mountains seen 6 ¶ And it came to pass at the end of fourty days that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made 7 And he sent forth a raven which went forth †Heb. in going forth and returning to and fro until the waters were dried up from off the earth 8 Also he sent forth a dove from him to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot and she returned unto him into the ark for the waters were on the face of the whole earth Then he put forth his hand and took her and †Heb. caused her to come pulled her in unto him into the ark 10 And he stayed yet other seven days and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark 11 And the dove came in to him in the evening and â—o in her mouth was as olive leaf pluckt off So Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth 12 And he stayed yet other seven days and sent forth the dove which returned not again unto him any more 13 ¶ And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year in the firâ—t moneth the first day of the moneth the waters were dried up from off the earth and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked and behold the face of the ground was dry 14 And in the second moneth on the seven and twentieth day of the moneth was the earth dried 15 ¶ And God spake unto Noah saying 16 Go forth of the ark thou and thy wife and thy sons and thy sons wives with thee 17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee of all flesh both of fowl and of cattel and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth that they may breed abundantly in the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon the earth 18 And Noah went forth and his sons and his wife and his sons wives with him 19 Every beast every creeping thing and every fowl and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth after their †Heb. families kinds went forth out of the ark 20 ¶ And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD and took of every clean beast of every clean fowl offered burnt-offerings on the altar 21 And the LORD smelled †Heb. a savour of rest a sweet savour and the LORD said in his heart I will not again curse the ground any more for mans sake for the * Chap. 6.5 Matth. 15.19 imagination of mans heart is evil from his youth neither will I again smite any more every thing living as I have done 22 †Heb. as yet all the days of the earth While the earth remaineth feed-time and harvest and cold and heat and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease CHAP. you thirty ‖ Or shirts sheets and thirty change of garments 13 But if ye cannot declare it me then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments And they said unto him Put forth thy riddle that we may hear it 14 And he said unto them Out of the eater came forth meat and out of the strong came forth sweetness And they could not in three days expound the riddle 15 And it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samsons wife Entice thy husband that he may declare unto us the riddle lest we burn thee and thy fathers house with fire have ye called us †Heb. to possess us or to impoverish us to take that we have is it not so 16 And Samsons wife wept before him and said Thou dost but hate me and lovest me not thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people and hast not told it me And he said unto her Behold I have not told it my father nor my mother and shall I tell it thee 17 And she wept before him ‖ Or the rest of the seven days c. the seven days while their feast lasted and it came to pass on the seventh day that he told her because she lay sore upon him and she told the riddle to the children of her people 18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down What is sweeter then honey and what is stronger then a lion And he said unto them If ye had not plowed with my heifer ye had not sound out my riddle 19 ¶ And the spirit of the LORD came upon him and he went down to Ashkelon and slew thirty men of them and took their ‖ Or apparel spoil and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle and his anger was kindled and he went up to his fathers house 20 But Samsons wife was given to his companion whom he had used as his friend CHAP. XV. 1 Samson is denied his wife 3 He burneth the Philistines corn with foxes and fire-brands 6 His wife and her father are burnt by the Philistines 7 Samson smiteth them hip and thigh 9 He is bound by the men of Judah and delivered to the Philistines 14 He killeth them with a jaw-bone 18 God maketh the fountain En-hakkore for him in Lehi BUt it came to pass within a while after in the time of wheat-harvest that Samson visited his wife with a kid and he said I will go in to my wife into the chamber But her father would not suffer him to go in 2 And her father said I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her therefore I gave her to thy companion is not her younger sister fairer then she †Heb. set her be thine take her I pray thee in stead of her 3 ¶ And Samson said concerning them ‖ Or Now shall I be blam-less from the Philistines though c. Now shall I be more blameless then the Philistines though I do them a displeasure 4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes and took ‖ Or torthes fire-brands and tarned tail to tail and put a fire-brand in the midst between two tails 5 And when he had set the brands on fire he let them go into the standing-corn of the Philistines and burnt up both the shocks and also the standing-corn with the vineyards and olives 6 ¶ Then the Philistines said Who hath done this And they answered Samson the son in law of the Timnite because he had taken his wife and given her to his companion And the Philistines came up and burnt her and her father with fire 7 ¶ And Samson said unto them Though ye have done this yet will I be avenged of you and after that I will cease 8 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam 9 ¶ Then the Philistines went up and pitched in Judah and spread themselves in Lehi 10 And the men of Judah said Why are ye come up against us And they answered To binde Samson are we come up to do to him as he hath done to us 11 Then three thousand men of Judah †Heb. went down went to the top of the rock Etam and said to Samson Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us what is this that thou hast done unto us And he said unto them As they did unto me so have I done unto them 12 And they said unto him We are come down to binde thee that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines And Samson said unto them Swear unto me that ye will not fall upon me your selves 13 And they spake unto him saying No but we will binde thee fast and deliver thee into their hand but surely we will not kill thee And they bound him with two new cords and brought him up from the rock 14 ¶ And when he came unto Lehi the Philistines shouted against him and the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire and his bands †Heb. â—â—re meltâ—â— loosed from off his hands 15 And he found a †Heb. â—â—ist new jaw-bone of an ass and put forth his hand and took it and slew a thousand men therewith 16 And Samson said With the jaw-bone of an ass †Heb. an heap two heaps heaps upon heaps with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men 17 And it came to pass when he had made an end of speaking that he cast away the jaw-bone out of his hand and called that place ‖ That is the listing up of the jaw-bone or casting away of the jaw-bone Ramath-Lehi 18 ¶ And he was sore athirst and called on the LORD and said Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant now shall I die for thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised 19 But God clave an hollow place that was in ‖ Or Lehi the jaw and there came water thereout and when he had drunk his spirit came again and he revived wherefore he called the name thereof ‖ That is the well of him that called or cried En-hakkore which is in Lehi unto this day 20 And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years CHAP. XVI 1 Samson at Gaza escapeth and carrieth away the gates of the city 4 Delilah corrupted by the Philistines enticeth Samson 6 Thrice she is deceived 15 At last she overcometh him 21 The Philistines take him and put out his eyes 22 His strength renewing he pulleth down the house upon the Philistines and dieth THen went Samson to Gaza and saw there †Heb. a woman an harlot an harlot and went in unto her 2 And it was told the Gazites saying Samson is
I pray thee a morsel of bread in thine hand 12 And she said As the LORD thy God liveth I have not a cake but an handful of meal in a barrel and a little oyl in a cruse and behold I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it for me and my son that we may eat it and die 13 And Elijah said unto her Fear not go and do as thou hast said but make me thereof a little cake first and bring it unto me and after make for thee and for thy son 14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel The barrel of meal shall not waste neither shall the cruse of oyl fail until the day that the LORD †Heb. giveth sendeth rain upon the earth 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he and her house did eat ‖ Or a full year many days 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not neither did the cruse of oyl fail according to the word of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of by Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass after these things that the son of the woman the mistress of the house fell sick and his sickness was so sore that there was no breath left in him 18 And she said unto Elijah What have I to do with thee O thou man of God art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance and to slay my son 19 And he said unto her Give me thy son And he took him out of her bosom and carried him up into a loft where he abode and laid him upon his own bed 20 And he cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son 21 And he †Heb. measured stretched himself upon the childe three times and cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God I pray thee let this childs soul come †Heb. into his inward parts into him again 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah and the soul of the childe came into him again and he revived 23 And Elijah took the childe and brought him down out of the chamber into the house and delivered him unto his mother and Elijah said See thy son liveth 24 ¶ And the woman said to Elijah Now by this I know that thou art a man of God and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth CHAP. XVIII 1 In the extremity of samine Elijah sent to Abah meeteth good Obadlah 9 Obadiah bringeth Ahab to Elijah 17 Elijah reproving Ahab by fire from heaven convinceth Baals prophets 41 Elijah by prayer obtaining rain followeth Ahab to Jezreel ANd it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year saying Go shew thy self unto Ahab and I will send rain upon the earth 2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab and there was a sore famine in Samaria 3 And Ahab called †Heb. Obadiahu Obadiah which was †Heb. over his house the governour of his house now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly 4 For it was so when †Heb. Izebel Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD that Obadiah took an hundred prophets and hid them by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah Go into the land unto all fountains of water and unto all brooks peradventure we may finde grass to save the horses and mules alive †Heb. that we cut not off our selves from the beasts that we leese not all the beasts 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way by himself 7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way behold Elijah met him and he knew him and fell on his lace and said Art thou that my lord Elijah 8 And he answered him I am go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 9 And he said What have I sinned that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab to slay me 10 As the LORD thy God liveth there is no nation nor kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee and when they said He is not there he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they found thee not 11 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 12 And it shall come to pass assoon as I am gone from thee that the spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not and so when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot finde thee he shall slay me but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD how I hid an hundred men of the LORDS prophets by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 14 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here and he shall slay me 15 And Elijah said As the LORD of hosts liveth before whom I stand I will surely shew my self unto him to day 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him and Ahab went to meet Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah that Ahab said unto him Art thou he that troubleth Israel 18 And he answered I have not troubled Israel but thou and thy fathers house in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and thou hast followed Baalim 19 Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty and the prophets of the groves four hundred which eat at Jezebels table 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel 21 And Elijah came unto all the people and said How long halt ye between two ‖ Or. thoughts opinions if the LORD be God follow him but if Baal then follow him And the people answered him not a word 22 Then said Elijah unto the people I even I onely remain a prophet of the LORD but Baals prophets are four hundred and fifty men 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks and let them choose one bullock for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under and I will dress the other bullock and lay it on wood and put no fire under 24 And call ye on the name of your gods and I will call on the name of the LORD and the God that answereth by fire let him be God And all the people answered and said †Heb. The word is good It is well spoken 25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal Choose you one bullock for your selves and dress it first for ye are many and call on the name of your gods but put no fire under 26

If ye will not hear and if ye will not lay it to heart to give glory unto my name saith the LORD of hosts I will even send a curse upon you and I will curse your blessing yea I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart 3 Behold I will ‖ Or reprove corrupt your seed and †Heb. statter spread dung upon your faces even the dung of your solemn feasts and ‖ Or it shall take you away to it one shall take you away with it 4 And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you that my covenant might be with Levi saith the LORD of hosts 5 My covenant was with him of life and peace and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he seared me and was afraid before my name 6 The law of truth was in his mouth and iniquity was not found in his lips he walked with me in peace and equity and did turn many away from iniquity 7 For the priests lips should keep knowledge and they should seek the law at his mouth for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts 8 But ye are departed out of the way ye have caused many to ‖ Or fall in the law stumble at the law ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi saith the LORD of hosts 9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people according as ye have not kept my ways but ‖ Or lifted up the face gainst †Heb. accepted faces have been partial in the law 10 * Eph. 4.6 Have we not all one father hath not one God created us why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother by profaning the covenant of our fathers 11 ¶ Judah hath dealt treacherously and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he ‖ Or ought to love loved and hath married the daughter of a strange god 12 The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this ‖ Or him that waketh and him that answereth the master and the scholar out of the tabernacles of Jacob and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts 13 And this have ye done again covering the altar of the LORD with tears with weeping and with crying out insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more or receiveth it with good will at your hand 14 ¶ Yet ye say Wherefore Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth against whom thou hast dealt treacherously yet is she thy companion and the wife of thy covenant 15 And did not he make one yet had he the ‖ Or excellency residue of the spirit and wherefore one that he might seek †Heb. a seed of God a godly seed therefore take heed to your spirit and let none deal ‖ Or unfaithfully treacherously against the wife of his youth 16 For the LORD the God of Israel saith ‖ Or if he hate her put her away that he hateth †Heb. to put away putting away for one covereth violence with his garment saith the LORD of hosts therefore take heed to your spirit that you deal not treacherously 17 ¶ Ye have wearied the LORD with your words yet ye say Wherein have we wearied him When ye say Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD and he delighteth in them or Where is the God of judgement CHAP. III. 1 Of the messenger majesty and grace of Christ 7 Of the rebellion 8 sacriledge 13 and infidelity of the people 16 The promise of blessing to them that fear God BEhold * Mat. 11.10 Mar. 1.2 Luk. 1.76 and 7.27 I will send my messenger and he shall prepare the way before me and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple even the messenger of the covenant whom ye delight in behold he shall come saith the LORD of hosts 2 But who may abide the day of his coming and who shall stand when he appeareth for he is like a refiners fire and like fullers sope 3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver and he shall purifie the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD as in the days of old and as in ‖ Or ancient former years 5 And I will come near to you to judgement and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against false swearers and against those that ‖ Or defraud oppress the hireling in his wages the widow and the fatherless and that turn aside the stranger from his right and fear not me saith the LORD of hosts 6 For I am the LORD I change not therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed 7 ¶ Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances and have not kept them * Zech. 1.3 return unto me and I will return unto you saith the LORD of hosts but ye said Wherein shall we return 8 ¶ Will a man rob God yet ye have robbed me but ye say Wherein have we robbed thee In tithes and offerings 9 Ye are cursed with a curse for ye have robbed me even this whole nation 10 Bring you all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house and prove me now herewith saith the LORD of hosts if I will not open you the * Gen. 7.11 windows of heaven and †Heb. empty out Pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes and he shall not †Heb. corrupt destroy the fruits
father 8 Then he said unto him Go and tarry not So he went in and said to his father Behold I have found one which will go with me Then he said Call him unto me that I may know of what tribe he is and whether he be a trusty man to go with thee 9 So he called him and he came in and they saluted one another 10 Then Tobit said unto him Brother shew me of what tribe and family thou art 11 To whom he said Dost thou seek for a tribe or family or an hired man to go with thy son Then Tobit said unto him I would know brother thy kindred and name 12 Then he said I am Azarias the son of Ananias the great and of thy brethren 13 Then Tobit said Thou art welcome brother be not now angry with me because I have enquired to know thy tribe and thy family for thou art my brother of an honest and good stock for I know Ananias and Jonathas sons of that great Samaias as we went together to Jerusalem to worship and offered the first-born and the tenths of the fruits and they were not seduced with the errour of our brethren my brother thou art of a good stock 14 But tell me what wages shall I give thee wilt thou a drachme a day and things necessary as to mine own son 15 Yea moreover if ye return safe I will add something to thy wages 16 So they were well pleased Then said he to Tobias Prepare thy self for the journey and God send you a good journey And when his son had prepared all things for the journey his father said Go thou with this man and God which dwelleth in heaven prosper your journey and the angel of God keep you company So they went forth both and the young mans dog with them 17 But Anna his mother wept and said to Tobit Why hast thou sent away our son is he not the staff of our hand in going in and out before us 18 ‖ Let not money be added but be the offscouringâ— of our son Be not greedy to add money to money but let it be as refuse in respect of our childe 19 ‖ Or So long as God bath granted us to live this is sufficient For that which the Lord hath given us to live with doth suffice us 20 Then said Tobit to her Take no care my sister he shall return in safety and thine eyes shall see him 21 For the good angel will keep him company and his journey shall be prosperous and he shall return safe 22 Then the made an end of weeping CHAP. VI. 4 The angel biddeth Tobias to take the liver heart and gall out of a fish 10 and to marry Sara the daughter of Raguel 16 and teacheth how to drive the wicked spirit away ANd as they went on their journey they came in the evening to the river Tigris and they lodged there 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself a fish leaped out of the river and would have devoured him 3 Then the angel said unto him Take the fish and the young man laid hold of the fish and ‖ Or cast it upon the â—and drew it to land 4 To whom the angel said Open the fish and take the heart and the liver and the gall and put them up safely 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him and when they had rosted the fish they did eat it then they both went on their way till they drew near to Ecbatane 6 Then the young man said to the angel Brother Azarias to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish 7 And he said unto him Touching the heart and the liver if a devil or an evil spirit trouble any we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman and the party shall be no more vexed 8 As for the gall it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness in his eyes and he shall be healed 9 And when they were come near to Rages 10 The angel said to the young man Brother to day we shall lodge with Raguel who is thy cousin he also hath one onely daughter named Sara I will speak for her that she may be given thee for a wife 11 For to thee doth the ‖ Or inheritance * Num. 27.8 36.8 right of her appertain seeing thou onely art of her kindred 12 And the maid is fair and wise now therefore hear me and I will speak to her father and when we return from Rages we will celebrate the marriage for I know that Raguel cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses but he shall be guilty of death because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to thee then to any other 13 Then the young man answered the angel I have heard brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men who all died in the marriage-chamber 14 And now I am the onely son of my father and I am afraid lest if I go in unto her I die as the other before for a wicked spirit loveth her which hurteth no body but those which come unto her wherefore I also fear lest I die and bring my fathers and my mothers life because of me to the grave with sorrow for they have no other son to bury them 15 Then the angel said unto him Dost thou not remember the precepts which thy father gave thee that thou shouldest marry a wife of thine own kindred wherefore hear me O my brother for she shall be given thee to wife and make thou no reckoning of the evil spirit for this same night shall she be given thee in marriage 16 And when thou shalt come into the marriage-chamber thou shalt take the ‖ Or embers ashes of perfume and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish and shalt make a smoke with it 17 And the devil shall smell it and flee away and never come again any more but when thou shalt come to her rise up both of you and pray to God which is merciful who will have pity on you and save you fear not for she is appointed unto thee from the beginning and thou shalt preserve her and she shall go with thee moreover I suppose that she shall bear thee children Now when Tobias had heard these things he loved her and his heart was ‖ Or vehemently effectually joyned to her CHAP. VII 11 Raguel telleth Tobias what had happened to his daughter 12 and giveth her in marriage unto him 17 She is conveyed to her chamber and weepeth 18 Her mother comforteth her ANd when they were come to Ecbatane they came to the house of Raguel and Sara met them and after they had saluted one another she brought them into the house 2 Then said Raguel to Edna his wife How like is this young man to Tobit my cousin 3 And Raguel asked them From whence
and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place he gave them away 17 And so haughty was Antiochus in minde that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city and therefore his eye was not upon the place 18 For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins this man assoon as he had come had forthwith been scourged and put back from his presumption as Heliodorus was whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury 19 Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the places sake but the place for the peoples sake 20 And therefore the place it self that was partaker with them of the adversity that hapned to the nation did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty so again the great Lord being reconciled it was set up with all glory 21 So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents he departed in all haste unto Antiochia weening in his pride to make the land navigable and the sea passable by foot such was the haughtiness of his minde 22 And he left governours to vâ—x the nation at Jerusalem Philip for his countrey a Phrygian and for manners more barbarous then he that set him there 23 And at Garizim Andronicus and besides Menelaus who worse then all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens having a malicious minde against his countreymen the Jews 24 He sent also that detestable ring-leader Apollonius with an army of two twenty thousand commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age and to sell the women and the younger sort 25 Who coming to Jerusalem and pretending pâ—â—â—â— dâ—â—â—orbear till the holy-day of the sabbath when taking the Jews keeping holy-day he commanded his men to arm themselves 26 And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath and running through the city with weapons â—lâ—w great multitudes 27 But Judas Maccabeus †Gr who was the tenth with nine others or thereabout withdrew himself into the wilderness and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts with his company who fed on herbs continually lest they should be partakers of the pollution CHAP. VI. 1 The Jews are compelled to leave the law of God 4 The temple is defiled 8 Cruelty upon the people and the nomâ— 12 〈◊〉 exhorâ—â— ion 〈◊〉 bear affliction by the example of the valiaâ—â—â—ouâ—aâ—e of E. 〈◊〉 cruelly tâ—rtured NOt long after this the king sent an old man of ‖ Antioâ—b the Laune interpreters Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and not to live after the laws of God 2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius and that in Garizun of Jupiter the defender of strangers ‖ Out of Joseph 1.12 cap. 7. or as they werâ— as they did desire that dwelt in the place 3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people 4 For the temple was filled with not and revelling by the Gentiles who dallied with harlots and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places and besides that brought in things that were not lawful 5 The altar also was filled with profane things which the law forbiddeth 6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath-days or ancient feasts or to profess himself at all to be a Jew 7 And in the day of the kings birth every moneth they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices and when the feast of Bacchus was kept the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus carrying ivie 8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the †Gr Grecians heathen by the suggestion of Ptolemee against the Jews that they should observe the same fashions be partakers of their sacrifices 9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death Then might a man have seen the present misery 10 For there were two women brought who had circumcised their children whom when they had openly led round about the city the babes hanging at their breasts they cast them down headlong from the wall 11 And others that had run together into caves near by to keep the sabbath-day secretly being discovered to Philip were all burnt together because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day 12 Now I beseech those that read this book that they be not discouraged for these calamities but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction but for a chastning of our nation 13 For it is a token of his great goodness when wicked doers are not suffered any long time but forthwith punished 14 For not as with other nations whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish till they be come to the fulness of their sins so dealeth he with us 15 Lest that being come to the height of sin afterwards he should take vengeance of us 16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us And though he punish with adversity yet doth he never forsake his people 17 But let this that we have spoken be for a warning unto us And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in few words 18 Eleazar one of the principal scribes an aged man and of a well-savoured countenance was constrained to open his mouth and to eat swines flesh 19 But he choosing rather to die gloriously then to live stained with such an abomination spirit it forth and came of his own accord to the torment 20 As it behoved them to come that are resolute to stand out against such things as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted 21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast for the old acquaintance they had with the man taking him aside besought him to bring flesh of his own provision such as was lawful for him to use and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king 22 That in so doing he might he delivered from death and for the old friendship with them finde favour 23 But he began to consider discreetly and as became his age and the excellency of his ancient years and the honour of his gray head whereunto he was come and his most honest education from a childe or rather the holy law made and given by God therefore he answered accordingly and willed them straightways to send him to the grave 24 For it becometh not our age said he in any wise to dissemble whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar being fourscore years old and ten were now gone to a strange religion 25

XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4â— Many Jews beleeve 47 The bâ—â—h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which anoâ—nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that we may die with him 17 Then when Jesus came he sound that he had lien in the grave four days already 18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem ‖ That is about two miles about fifteen furlongs off 19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother 20 Then Martha assoon as she heard that Jesus was coming went and met him but Mary sat still in the house 21 Then said Martha unto Jesus Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 22 But I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God God will give it thee 23 Jesus saith unto her Thy brother shall rise again 24 Martha saith unto him * Luk. 14.14 Chap. 5.29 I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day 25 Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the * Ch. â— 35 life he that that she arose quickly and came unto him 30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town but was in that place where Martha met him 31 The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted her when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went out followed her saving She goeth unto the grave to weep there 32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him she fell down at his feet saying unto him Lord if thou hadst been here my brother had not died 33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping which came with her he groaned in the spirit and †Gr. be troubled himself was troubled 34 And said Where have ye laid him They say unto him Lord come and see 35 Jâ—sus wept 36 Then said the Jews Behold how he loved him 37 And some of them said Could not this man * that if thou wouldest beleeve thou shouldest see the glory of God 41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was said And Jesus list up his eyes and said Father I thank thee that thou hast heard me 42 And I knew that thou hearest me always but because of the people which stand by I said it that they may beleeve that thou hast sent me 43 And when he thus had spoken he cried with a loud voice Lazarus come forth 44 And he that was dead came sorth bound hand and foot with grave-clothes and his face was bound about with a napkin Jesus saith unto them Loose him and let him go 45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did beleeved on him 46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees and told them what things Jesus had done 47 ¶ Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council and said What do we for this man doeth many miracles 48 If we let him thus alone all men will beleeve on him and the Romans shall come and the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IX 1 Paul is sorry for the Jews 7 All the seed of Abraham were not the children of the promise 18 God hath mercy upon whom he will 21 The potter may do with his clay what he list 25 The calling of the Gentiles and rejecting of the Jews were foretold 32 The cause why so few Jews embraced the righteousness of faith I Say the truth in Christ I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the holy Ghost 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart 3 For I could wish that myself were ‖ Or separated accursed from Christ for my brethren my kinsmen according to the flesh 4 Who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the ‖ Or testaments covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises 5 Whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed for ever Amen 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect For they are not all Israel which are of Israel 7 Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children but in * Gen. 21.12 Isaac shall thy seed be called 8 That is They which are the children of the flesh these are not the children of God but * Gal. 4.28 the children of the promise are counted for the seed 9 For this is the word of promise * Gen 18.10 At this time will I come and Sara shall have a son 10 And not onely this but when Rebecca also had conceived by one even by our father Isaac 11 For the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works but of him that calleth 12 It was said unto her The * Gen. 25.23 ‖ Or greater elder shall serve the ‖ Or lesser younger 13 As it is written * Mal. 1.2 3. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP.
