perfect_a and_o inflame_a charity_n which_o with_o its_o fire_n burn_v up_o and_o with_o its_o flame_n consume_v all_o the_o dross_n imperfection_n and_o misery_n which_o our_o wretched_a nature_n send_v up_o as_o in_o smoke_n to_o the_o region_n of_o the_o spirit_n this_o excellent_a and_o superior_a charity_n which_o neither_o suffer_v nor_o allow_v so_o much_o as_o a_o consent_n to_o the_o afford_v therewith_o a_o constancy_n and_o firmness_n in_o holy_a exercise_n a_o continual_a desire_n and_o longing_n to_o prosecute_v and_o to_o finish_v its_o course_n and_o to_o die_v in_o christ_n with_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n for_o all_o thing_n else_o it_o neither_o value_v they_o nor_o love_v they_o nor_o fear_v they_o he_o that_o have_v get_v to_o receive_v from_o god_n this_o high_a degree_n of_o charity_n be_v govern_v in_o all_o thing_n by_o his_o hand_n and_o punctual_o follow_v his_o direction_n for_o he_o love_v the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o that_o love_n move_v and_o affection_n which_o be_v tolerable_a yet_o imperfect_a through_o their_o excess_n that_o he_o possess_v the_o soul_n total_o with_o his_o love_n and_o from_o the_o most_o inward_a to_o the_o uttermost_a extent_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o from_o the_o superior_a to_o the_o most_o inferior_a part_n of_o it_o fill_v it_o whole_o with_o himself_o so_o that_o if_o such_o a_o one_o love_v his_o parent_n whether_o natural_a or_o spiritual_a he_o do_v it_o in_o god_n and_o for_o god_n and_o if_o he_o love_v his_o brethren_n whether_o those_o of_o nature_n or_o those_o of_o grace_n he_o love_v they_o also_o in_o god_n and_o for_o god_n who_o order_n and_o govern_v all_o his_o love_n this_o the_o holy_a soul_n say_v in_o the_o canticle_n when_o among_o other_o favour_n her_o spouse_n have_v do_v she_o she_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o have_v order_v and_o govern_v her_o affection_n as_o if_o she_o have_v say_v though_o there_o be_v charity_n in_o i_o yet_o it_o be_v inordinate_a for_o i_o spirit_n cause_v such_o heavenly_a effect_n in_o we_o as_o give_v our_o life_n the_o advantage_n far_o above_o all_o the_o feast_n and_o merriment_n of_o you_o st._n paul_n seem_v to_o compare_v spiritual_a delight_n with_o sensual_a pleasure_n and_o the_o recreation_n of_o the_o good_a with_o the_o pastime_n of_o the_o wicked_a this_o appear_v in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o count_v eternal_a glory_n for_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o those_o effect_n which_o the_o spirit_n itself_o produce_v in_o this_o life_n which_o be_v joy_n peace_n long-suffering_a etc._n etc._n as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v the_o spirit_n have_v two_o sort_n of_o fruit_n one_o for_o this_o life_n which_o be_v a_o internal_a glory_n and_o the_o other_o for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v which_o be_v both_o a_o external_n internal_a and_o supernal_a glory_n two_o fruit_n one_o of_o temporal_a peace_n upon_o earth_n and_o the_o other_o of_o eternal_a peace_n in_o heaven_n this_o question_n which_o sinner_n make_v to_o the_o righteous_a seem_v to_o correspond_v to_o that_o which_o st._n paul_n make_v to_o sinner_n when_o he_o ask_v they_o what_o fruit_n have_v you_o then_o in_o those_o thing_n whereof_o you_o be_v now_o ashamed_a and_o they_o if_o they_o will_v answer_v true_o can_v answer_v nothing_o but_o that_o grief_n misery_n and_o confusion_n have_v be_v the_o fruit_n of_o they_o but_o they_o answer_v only_o with_o another_o question_n say_v and_o you_o what_o fruit_n do_v you_o get_v by_o follow_v of_o virtue_n to_o which_o st._n paul_n answer_v not_o one_o fruit_n but_o twelve_o most_o savoury_a and_o pleasant_a one_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o eternal_a fruit_n he_o likewise_o implicit_o put_v the_o beatitude_n for_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o comprehend_v they_o in_o these_o twelve_o as_o one_o that_o give_v the_o name_n of_o the_o effect_n to_o the_o cause_n for_o it_o be_v as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v do_v thou_o assure_v i_o that_o thou_o enjoy_v these_o twelve_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o this_o life_n and_o i_o will_v assure_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v enjoy_v those_o eight_o beatitude_n in_o the_o other_o life_n do_v thou_o assure_v i_o that_o thou_o live_v here_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n and_o i_o will_v assure_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v reign_v there_o for_o ever_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n it_o be_v true_a one_o will_v think_v that_o these_o twelve_o fruit_n which_o we_o now_o speak_v of_o gather_v in_o and_o store_v up_o for_o the_o harvest_n of_o the_o spiritual_a year_n seem_v to_o be_v those_o common_a virtue_n we_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o second_o part_n but_o though_o they_o be_v like_a there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o they_o for_o this_o peace_n this_o chastity_n this_o charity_n this_o benignity_n etc._n etc._n be_v not_o altogether_o the_o same_o with_o those_o there_o speak_v of_o but_o these_o do_v presuppose_v those_o and_o these_o be_v a_o supreme_a habit_n which_o god_n give_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n whereby_o he_o raise_v facilitate_v perfect_v and_o crown_v those_o virtue_n which_o be_v there_o begin_v and_o bring_v they_o to_o a_o high_a and_o heroical_a perfection_n the_o reason_n upon_o which_o i_o ground_n myself_o be_v that_o those_o virtue_n though_o they_o be_v serviceable_a for_o the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o call_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o virtue_n which_o conduce_v to_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o which_o we_o begin_v and_o proceed_v in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n but_o these_o fruit_n which_o st._n paul_n here_o mention_n be_v more_o than_o virtue_n they_o be_v gift_n and_o fruit_n which_o grow_v from_o the_o spirit_n and_o as_o a_o tree_n after_o have_v be_v dig_v about_o manure_v prune_v and_o take_v care_n of_o all_o the_o year_n do_v by_o gather_v a_o inward_a sap_n beget_v the_o generative_a virtue_n of_o its_o fruit_n defend_v it_o by_o its_o bark_n in_o the_o winter_n shelter_n it_o with_o its_o leave_n in_o the_o summer_n season_v it_o with_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o air_n in_o the_o autumn_n and_o last_o offer_v up_o its_o fruit_n to_o be_v gather_v by_o the_o owner_n which_o be_v the_o best_a of_o all_o his_o labour_n so_o also_o these_o twelve_o fruit_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v the_o best_a of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n and_o much_o more_o excellent_a than_o those_o virtue_n wherewith_o man_n begin_v and_o go_v on_o in_o it_o at_o the_o first_o and_o these_o grow_v from_o they_o into_o a_o fruit_n which_o by_o and_o through_o their_o mean_n the_o holy_a spirit_n ripen_v and_o make_v more_o fragrant_a more_o savoury_a and_o more_o substantial_a than_o all_o those_o virtue_n of_o the_o beginning_n we_o will_v go_v on_o discourse_v of_o these_o twelve_o fruit_n in_o the_o remain_a week_n of_o this_o spiritual_a year_n to_o the_o end_n that_o thou_o may_v rejoice_v in_o find_v that_o blessedness_n be_v not_o only_o the_o reward_n of_o virtue_n but_o that_o virtue_n itself_o be_v blessedness_n already_o and_o that_o thou_o may_v see_v and_o know_v and_o feel_v within_o thyself_o that_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o spirit_n and_o virtue_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v nothing_o but_o sadness_n pain_n and_o misery_n of_o charity_n the_o first_o fruit_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n here_o st._n paul_n the_o great_a master_n
