of_o grace_n it_o keep_v and_o pale_v we_o in_o god_n hedge_v we_o in_o with_o thorn_n that_o we_o may_v not_o run_v out_o and_o then_o if_o we_o fall_v it_o recover_v we_o and_o fetch_v we_o in_o again_o by_o embitter_v sinful_a course_n to_o we_o we_o see_v then_o affliction_n and_o poverty_n be_v sanctify_v to_o god_n child_n to_o work_v a_o inward_a fight_n of_o their_o spiritual_a want_n take_v notice_n hence_o of_o the_o poison_n and_o sinfulness_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n 1_o that_o defile_v itself_o in_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n blessing_n so_o that_o god_n can_v otherwise_o fit_v we_o for_o grace_n but_o by_o strip_v of_o we_o of_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o this_o shall_v abase_v we_o very_o much_o consider_v that_o those_o thing_n that_o shall_v be_v rise_v to_o we_o to_o raise_v we_o up_o to_o god_n that_o shall_v be_v glass_n to_o see_v the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o our_o nature_n use_v they_o as_o cloud_n to_o keep_v god_n from_o we_o and_o to_o fasten_v and_o fix_v upon_o the_o thing_n themselves_o so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o remedy_n but_o god_n must_v strip_v we_o naked_a of_o they_o this_o consideration_n shall_v humble_v we_o and_o let_v we_o make_v this_o use_n of_o it_o 2._o let_v we_o know_v when_o any_o abasement_n be_v sanctify_v to_o we_o love_n it_o come_v from_o god_n love_n if_o we_o find_v imply_v both_o for_o godliness_n be_v not_o only_o the_o naked_a principle_n of_o religion_n but_o likewise_o the_o christian_a affection_n the_o inward_a bent_n of_o the_o soul_n suitable_a to_o divine_a principle_n there_o must_v be_v a_o godly_a disposition_n carry_v we_o to_o godly_a truth_n that_o godliness_n include_v the_o truth_n themselves_o i_o need_v go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o connexion_n in_o the_o last_o word_n of_o the_o former_a verse_n the_o church_n be_v the_o pillar_n and_o ground_n of_o truth_n and_o than_o it_o follow_v without_o controversy_n great_a be_v the_o mystery_n he_o do_v not_o say_v of_o truth_n but_o of_o godliness_n in_o stead_n of_o truth_n he_o say_v godliness_n the_o same_o word_n imply_v the_o truth_n themselves_o and_o the_o affection_n and_o disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n towards_o they_o truth_n to_o show_v that_o both_o must_v always_o go_v together_o wheresoever_o christian_n truth_n be_v know_v as_o it_o shall_v be_v there_o as_o we_o say_v the_o apostle_n faith_n it_o breed_v faith_n and_o must_v be_v apprehend_v by_o faith_n therefore_o one_o word_n include_v both_o the_o object_n the_o thing_n believe_v and_o likewise_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o that_o object_n so_o here_o godliness_n be_v the_o thing_n itself_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o likewise_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o those_o truth_n work_n where_o they_o be_v entertain_v as_o they_o shall_v be_v hence_o follow_v these_o other_o truth_n brief_o first_o of_o all_o that_o no_o truth_n breed_v godliness_n goodness_n and_o piety_n of_o life_n but_o divine_a truth_n for_o that_o be_v call_v godliness_n because_o it_o breed_v godliness_n all_o the_o device_n of_o man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v breed_v godliness_n all_o be_v superstition_n and_o not_o godliness_n that_o be_v not_o breed_v by_o a_o divine_a truth_n again_o godly_a hence_o in_o that_o divine_a truth_n be_v call_v godliness_n it_o show_v we_o if_o we_o will_v be_v godly_a we_o must_v be_v so_o from_o reason_n of_o christianity_n not_o as_o i_o say_v by_o frame_v device_n of_o our_o own_o as_o graceless_a foolish_a man_n do_v as_o we_o see_v in_o popery_n it_o be_v full_a of_o ceremony_n of_o their_o own_o devise_v but_o if_o we_o will_v be_v godly_a it_o must_v be_v by_o reason_n and_o motive_n from_o divine_a truth_n that_o breed_v godliness_n it_o be_v but_o a_o bastard_n godliness_n a_o bastard_n religion_n that_o be_v from_o a_o good_a intention_n without_o a_o good_a ground_n therefore_o the_o word_n imply_v both_o the_o tenent_n the_o doctrine_n and_o the_o frame_n of_o soul_n answerable_a to_o that_o doctrine_n good_a principle_n without_o a_o impression_n of_o it_o on_o the_o soul_n be_v nothing_o it_o 〈◊〉_d but_o help_v we_o to_o be_v damn_v and_o godliness_n without_o a_o frame_n of_o doctrine_n be_v nothing_o but_o superstition_n godliness_n in_o doctrine_n frame_v the_o soul_n to_o godliness_n in_o conversation_n there_o be_v many_o that_o out_o of_o a_o natural_a superstition_n which_o be_v always_o accompany_v with_o a_o poisonful_a malicious_a disposition_n against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n they_o will_v have_v device_n of_o their_o own_o and_o those_o they_o will_v force_v with_o all_o their_o power_n but_o if_o we_o will_v be_v godly_a it_o must_v be_v from_o reason_n fetch_v from_o divine_a truth_n who_o again_o hence_o we_o may_v fetch_v a_o rule_n of_o discern_v when_o we_o be_v godly_a what_o make_v a_o true_a christian_n when_o he_o naked_o believe_v the_o ground_n of_o divine_a truth_n the_o article_n of_o the_o faith_n when_o he_o can_v patter_v they_o over_o do_v that_o make_v a_o true_a christian_n no_o but_o when_o these_o truth_n breed_n and_o work_v godliness_n for_o religion_n be_v a_o truth_n according_a to_o godliness_n not_o according_a to_o speculation_n only_o and_o notion_n wheresoever_o these_o fundamental_a truth_n be_v embrace_v there_o be_v godliness_n with_o they_o a_o man_n can_v embrace_v religion_n in_o truth_n but_o he_o must_v be_v godly_a a_o man_n know_v no_o more_o of_o christ_n and_o divine_a thing_n than_o he_o value_v and_o esteem_v and_o affect_v and_o bring_v the_o whole_a inward_a man_n into_o a_o frame_n to_o be_v like_o the_o thing_n if_o these_o thing_n work_v not_o godliness_n a_o man_n have_v but_o a_o humane_a knowledge_n of_o divine_a thing_n if_o they_o carry_v not_o the_o soul_n to_o trust_v in_o god_n to_o hope_v in_o god_n to_o fear_n god_n to_o embrace_v he_o to_o obey_v he_o that_o man_n be_v not_o yet_o a_o true_a christian_a for_o christianity_n be_v not_o a_o naked_a knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n but_o godliness_n religious_a evangelicall_n truth_n wisdom_n be_v wisdom_n and_o wisdom_n be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n direct_v to_o practice_v a_o man_n be_v a_o wise_a man_n when_o he_o know_v so_o as_o to_o practice_v what_o he_o know_v the_o gospel_n be_v a_o divine_a wisdom_n teach_v practice_n as_o well_o as_o knowledge_n it_o work_v godliness_n or_o else_o a_o man_n have_v but_o a_o humane_a knowledge_n of_o divine_a thing_n therefore_o he_o that_o be_v godly_a he_o believe_v aright_o and_o practise_v aright_o he_o that_o believe_v ill_a can_v never_o live_v well_o for_o he_o have_v no_o foundation_n he_o make_v a_o idol_n
only_o and_o strong_a wit_n and_o such_o learning_n as_o those_o dark_a time_n afford_v to_o speak_v of_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o justification_n they_o speak_v of_o it_o and_o distinguish_v in_o a_o mere_a metaphysical_a and_o carnal_a manner_n therefore_o they_o bring_v only_o humane_a learning_n they_o be_v furnish_v with_o plato_n and_o other_o natural_a learning_n and_o with_o into_o heaven_n so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o we_o the_o same_o body_n that_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o christ_n the_o same_o body_n that_o die_v the_o same_o body_n shall_v rise_v and_o be_v assume_v to_o glory_n suffering_n hence_o likewise_o we_o have_v a_o ground_n of_o patience_n in_o all_o our_o suffering_n from_o another_o reason_n not_o from_o the_o order_n but_o from_o the_o false_a peace_n peace_n the_o great_a danger_n in_o the_o world_n in_o this_o regard_n be_v in_o the_o church_n for_o people_n under_o the_o gospel_n speak_v false_a peace_n to_o themselves_o there_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o delusion_n that_o carry_v they_o along_o to_o their_o death_n and_o deceive_v they_o also_o in_o death_n and_o so_o they_o be_v in_o hell_n before_o they_o be_v aware_a and_o then_o too_o late_o they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v never_o in_o good_a term_n with_o god_n in_o all_o their_o life_n because_o they_o look_v on_o christ_n make_v peace_n without_o any_o
