the flesh to live after the flesh 13 For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die but if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the * Gal. 4.6 Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 16 The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 17 And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 20 For the creature was made subject to vanity not willingly but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope 21 Because the creature it self also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God 22 For we know that ‖ Or every creature the whole creation groaneth and travelleth in pain together until now 23 And not only they but our selves also which have the first-fruits of the Spirit even we our selves groan within our selves waiting for the adoption to wit the * Luke 21.28 redemption of our body 24 For we are saved by hope But hope that is seen is not hope for what a man seeth why doth he yet hope for 25 But if we hope for that we see not then do we with patience wait for it 26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit it self maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the minde of the Spirit ‖ Or that because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God 28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose 29 For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called and whom he called them he also justified and whom he justified them he also glorified 31 What shall we then say to these things If God be for us who can be against us 32 He that spared not his own Son but delivered him up for us all how shall he not with him also freely give us all things 33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of Gods elect It is God that justifieth 34 Who is he that condemneth It is Christ that died yea rather that is risen again who is even at the right hand of God who also maketh intercession for us 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or peril or sword 36 As it is written * Psal 44.22 For thy sake we are killed all the day long we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter 37 Nay in all these things we are more then conquerers through him that loved us 38 For I am perswaded that neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities nor powers nor things present nor things to come 39 Nor height nor depth nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. CHAP. IX 1 Paul is sorry for the Jews 7 All the seed of Abraham were not the children of the promise 18 God hath mercy upon whom he will 21 The potter may do with his clay what he list 25 The calling of the Gentiles and rejecting of the Jews were foretold 32 The cause why so few Jews embraced the righteousness of faith I Say the truth in Christ I lie not my conscience also bearing me witness in the holy Ghost 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart 3 For I could wish that myself were ‖ Or separated accursed from Christ for my brethren my kinsmen according to the flesh 4 Who are Israelites to whom pertaineth the adoption and the glory and the ‖ Or testaments covenants and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises 5 Whose are the fathers and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came who is over all God blessed for ever Amen 6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect For they are not all Israel which are of Israel 7 Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children but in * Gen. 21.12 Isaac shall thy seed be called 8 That is They which are the children of the flesh these are not the children of God but * Gal. 4.28 the children of the promise are counted for the seed 9 For this is the word of promise * Gen 18.10 At this time will I come and Sara shall have a son 10 And not onely this but when Rebecca also had conceived by one even by our father Isaac 11 For the children being not yet born neither having done any good or evil that the purpose of God according to election might stand not of works but of him that calleth 12 It was said unto her The * Gen. 25.23 ‖ Or greater elder shall serve the ‖ Or lesser younger 13 As it is written * Mal. 1.2 3. VII 2 He treateth of marriage 4 shewing it to be a remedy against fornication 10 and that the bond thereof ought not lightly to be dissolved 18 20 Every man must be content with his vocation 25 Virginity wherefore to be embraced 35 And for what respects we may either marry or abstain from marrying NOw concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me It is good for a man not to touch a woman 2 Nevertheless to avoid fornication let every man have his own wife and let every woman have her own husband 3 Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence and likewise also the wife unto the husband 4 The wife hath not power of her own body but the husband and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body but the wife 5 Defraud you not one the other except it be with consent for a time that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer and come together again that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency 6 But I speak this by permission and not of commandment 7 For I would that all men were even as I my self but every man hath his proper gift of God one after this manner another after that 8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9 But if they cannot contain let them marry for it is better to marry then to burn 10
the glory of God 8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God to confirm the promises made unto the fathers 9 And that the Gentiles might glorifie God for his mercy as it is written * Psal 18.49 For this cause I will confess to thee among thee Gentiles and sing unto thy name 10 And again he saith * Deut. 32.43 Rejoyceye Gentiles with his people 11 And again * Psal 117.1 Praise the Lord all ye Gentiles and laud him all ye people 12 And again Esaias saith * Isa 11.10 There shall be a root of Jesse and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles in him shall the Gentiles trust 13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in beleeving that ye may abound in hope through the power of the holy Ghost 14 And I my self also am perswaded of you my brethren that ye also are full of goodness filled with all knowledge able also to admonish one another 15 Nevertheless brethren I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort as putting you in minde because of the grace that is given to me of God 16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles ministring the gospel of God that the ‖ Or sâ—â—rificing offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable being sanctified by the holy Ghost 17 I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God 18 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me to make the Gentiles obedient by word and deed 19 Through mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God so that from Jerusalem and round about unto Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ 20 Yea so have I strived to preach the gospel not where Christ was named left I should build upon another mans foundation 21 But as it is written * Isa 52.15 To whom he was not spoken of they shall see and they that have not heard shall understand 22 For which cause also I have been ‖ Or many ways or oftentimes much hindred from coming to you 23 But now having no more place in these parts and having a great desire these many years to come unto you 24 Whensoever I take my journey into Spain I will come to you for I trust to see you in my journey and to be brought on my way thitherward by you if first I be somewhat filled †Gr. with you vers 32. with your company 25 But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints 26 For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem 27 It hath pleased them verily and their debters they are For * 1 Cor. 9.11 if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things 28 When therefore I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit I will come by you into Spain 29 And I am sure that when I come unto you I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ 30 Now I beseech you brethren for the Lord Jesus Christ sake and for the love of the Spirit that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me 31 That I may be delivered from them that ‖ Or are disobedient do not beleeve in Judea and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints 32 That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God and may with you be refreshed 33 Now the God of peace be with you all Amen CHAP. seven golden candlesticks The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches CHAP. II. What is commanded to be written to the angels that is the ministers of the churches of 1 Ephesus 8 Smyrna 12 Pergamos 18 Thyatira and what is commended or found wanting in them UNto the angel of the church of Ephesus write These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks 2 I know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not and hast found them liars 3 And hast born and hast patience and for my names sake hast laboured and hast not fainted 4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love 5 Remember therefore from whence thou art faln and repent and do the first works or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy candlestick out of his place except thou repent 6 But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans which I also hate 7 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God 8 And unto the Angel of the church in Smyrna write These things saith the first and the last which was dead and is alive 9 I know thy works and tribulation and poverty but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews and are not but are the synagogue of Satan 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer behold the devil shall cast some of you into prison that ye may be tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life 11 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death 12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges 13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest even where Satans seat is and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth 14 But I have a few things against thee because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of * Num. 25. III. 2 The angel of the church of Sardis is reproved 3 exhorted to repent and threatned if he do not repent 8 The angel of the church of Philadelphia 10 is approved for his dilâ—â—enâ—e and patience 15 The angel of Laodicea is rebuzed for being neither hot nor cold 19 and admonished to be more zealous 20 Christ standeth at the door and knocketh ANd unto the angel of the church in Sardis write These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God and the seven stars I know thy works that thou hast a name that thou livest and art dead 2 Be watchful and strengthen the things which remain that are ready to die for I have not found thy works perfect before God 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard and hold fast and repent * 1 Thes 5. â— 2 Pet. 3.10 Ch 16.15 If therefore thou shalt not watch I will come on thee as a thief thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments and they shall walk with me in white for they are worthy 5 He that overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment and I will not blot out his name out of the * Phil. 4.3 Ch. 20.12 book of life but I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels 6 He that hath an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write These things saith he that is holy he that is true he that hath * Is 2â— 22 the key of David he that openeth and no man shutteth and shutteth no man openeth 8 I know thy works behold I have set before thee an open door and no man can shut it for thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3◠Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to
